TWO ICONIC CHOCOLATES, ONE SWEET STORY. AN UNCONVENTIONAL TALE OF TWO CITIES AND THEIR CHOCOLATE OBSESSION.
Frango’s story begins in Seattle, 1918. Originally a frozen dessert served at Frederick & Nelson’s tea room, it inspired candy maker Ray C. Alden to craft a chocolate version using cocoa beans from Africa and South America, butter, and triple-distilled Oregon peppermint oil. After extensive taste trials, the Frango mint chocolate truffle was born—quickly becoming a Northwest tradition.
In 1929, during the Great Depression, Chicago’s Marshall Field & Company acquired Frederick & Nelson and its cherished Frango recipe. Seattle chocolatiers trained Marshall Field’s staff, leading to a distinctly Chicago version of the treat.
Today, both recipes honor Frango’s rich heritage, delighting generations with its timeless tradition.
