An Encouraging Word

Kindness Is The Real Need

The day, a beautiful one, began as the days usually do. Upon awakening, the first question I faced was: What will I wear today? It was not a big question, but one I usually face. After opening the wardrobe door, at once I was faced with several possibilities. The first thing I saw was a pair of blue trousers and a matching shirt that I always wear with it. Then, I noticed a pair of brown trousers and a shirt that went with it. Looking a little longer, I saw a pair of gray trousers and a shirt I always wore with it. Then the thought came to me: Don’t take so long. Just pick one of them; trousers and shirts don’t always have to match. It doesn’t make any real difference. Actually,

Carolyn Whittaker who startwhat one wears is of little importance. Then, I remembered something that, I think, does matter. When it comes to making preparation for the day, it is important. A long time ago---about two thousand years---someone with a good deal of wisdom passed on some good advice to us: “Clothe yourself with…kindness.” That should be done every day. When it is done, it overrides everything else, and the color and style of other garments become less important. The environment in which we live can be, and often is, difficult---even cruel---at times. Frequently, things happen that hurt, and they hurt deeply; they pull us apart. But “Kindness,” according to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, “is the golden chain by which society is bound together.” To clothe oneself in kindness is the real need. Ella Wheeler Wilcox, an American writer of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, wrote: “So many paths that wind and wind; when just the art if being kind is all this sad word needs.” Kindness, a feeling of affectionate good will for others, is a powerful force that can radically change a hostile environment, even an extremely difficult one, and make life much better.

Warn Customers Of Bill-Payment Scam Callers claim to work for the utilities; ask for payment over the phone or in person (LOUISVILLE, Ky.) – Louisville Gas and Electric Company and Kentucky Utilities Company want to alert customers of a new telephone scam whereby a caller claims to be a utility employee and asks for bill payment over the phone or in person, and threatens to disconnect electric or natural gas service if the targeted customer does not cooperate. The companies have alerted authorities and offer the following advice to residential and business customers in the wake of this new scam: · LG&E and KU never call and ask for credit or debit card numbers or other personal information. · As a courtesy, LG&E and KU do make computer-generated calls to remind customers if their payment is late, and the call includes an option for customers to select if they want to make their payment by phone. · Customers who receive a live phone call, an e-mail or letter that is suspicious should call the companies, who will always

verify official communications. LG&E customers should call 502-589-1444 (outside Louisville at 1-800-331-7370); KU customers should call 1-800-981-0600. · The utilities offer customers a variety of official payment options. A complete list can be found at www.lge-ku.com/ ways_to_pay.asp. · Customers who have been impacted by this scam should report it to their local police department. Although the latest scam targets individuals and businesses by phone, LG&E and KU encourage customers to always obtain positive identification in the event someone appears at their door stating they are there on the companies’ behalf. Authentic LG&E and KU ID badges — whether issued to an employee or a contractor — show the companies’ logos. An employee ID card always has the employee’s name and color photograph on the front as well. Sometimes there are legitimate service-related reasons the utilities may need access to a customer’s home, but in-person contact at a customer’s home never involves collecting payment for a monthly bill.
