CREATE AND CELEBRATE WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH

Join us for the Create and Celebrate program, where families can work together on a craft in honor of Women’s History Month. Drop by our craft station where you can create your own wire sculpture inspired by Japanese American artist Ruth Asawa. You will also have the option to display your creation in the library for the month of March. Instructions and supplies will be provided. Cookies while supplies last.

Curiosity Corner Makerspace (Ages 13+)

INTRODUCTORY MAKER CLASSES

Learn about the Curiosity Corner makerspace and develop maker techniques using our machines! These skills include laser cutting, 3D and 2D design, 3D printing, vinyl cutting (Cricut), soldering and more. Taking an intro class on a machine will let you use that machine during any Open Lab. Most intro classes are available on the library’s website. Laser Cutting classes are only available in person. A valid library card is required to use and take classes in the makerspace.

CROCHET CORNER

Whether you are a seasoned crocheter or just starting out, join us at the Curiosity Corner Makerspace at the Central Library for a fun, cozy hour of crochet. At each program, we will go through making a creation from the monthly Crochet Corner display together as an active tutorial. Basic guidance, some hooks for use during the program, and yarn will be available, but supplies will be limited. Participants are encouraged to bring their own if possible. The patterns we will be following call for a 3.5mm4mm hook (E/F/G) and DK or worsted weight yarn, available wherever crafting supplies are sold.

SUBLIMATION WORKSHOPS

Participants will learn about the sublimation process and how to use the heat press machines. Each person will take home a sublimated item.

CROCHET: BEGINNER BASICS

Join us for a beginner-friendly crochet class. We'll cover basic stitches such as slip knot, chain stitch, single crochet, and double crochet. Hooks and yarn provided but supplies are limited; participants are encouraged to bring their own supplies if possible.

In this painting workshop we’ll be covering painting techniques for 3D prints. Paint and brushes provided. Sample 3D prints will be provided to practice the painting techniques.

CLAY MINIATURE TERRARIUMS

Work with polymer clay to craft miniature clay figures. Then decorate miniature glass jar terrariums to house the clay creations. All skill levels are welcome!

CROCHET FLOWER COASTERS FOR BEGINNERS

Follow along and create a flower coaster of your own or work on a project from home. Hooks and yarn provided, but supplies are limited. This project is beginner friendly!

INTRO TO GRANNY SQUARES*

Learn how to crochet a classic granny square. The granny square is a traditional pattern that is the foundation for many different projects such as blankets, bags, sweaters, hats and so much more! In this class, you’ll learn the basics of creating your very own granny square and grow your confidence with crochet. Each participant will be provided with yarn and a crochet hook. Participants are encouraged to bring their own supplies.

*This is not a class to learn to crochet. Students should be comfortable with basic crochet stitches including chain, slip stitch, single crochet and double crochet.

MAKERSPACE OPEN LAB

Teens and adults with a current Garland library card and signed waiver can use makerspace tools and supplies during Open Lab hours. Introductory classes are required for some machines. Check the library calendar for Open Lab availability.

MOROCCAN TEA WORKSHOP

Celebrate Arab American Heritage Month! Experience the rich flavors and traditions of Morocco in this special hands-on workshop led by Youssef El Berrichi, Director of Roots Academy in Morocco and professor of Arabic language and culture.

Youssef will demonstrate the art of preparing authentic Moroccan mint tea, sharing the cultural significance behind each step of the process. Participants will then work in pairs to make their own small pot of tea, practicing rinsing the leaves, adding herbs and pouring in the traditional highpour style.

This workshop offers a welcoming introduction to Arabic culture through taste, storytelling and shared experience.

FIBER ARTS WITH FRIENDS

At this monthly, informal program, patrons can engage in different fiber crafts, working on ongoing projects with their own supplies or starting something new if they like. They can chat with other crafters, sharing tips or asking for guidance if they’re stuck on a particular stitch or issue. This program is not intended to be a class but rather a chance for people with existing skills in fiber arts to work independently yet together! A staff member will be on hand to provide help wherever they can or to look up resources for patrons if they don’t readily have an answer.

NEXT STEP CROCHET: THE GRANNY SQUARE

3 p.m. Saturday, April 18

Now that you’ve learned the basics of crochet, let’s move on to the next step: the granny square. In this program, we will work on the double crochet stitch that is frequently used in most granny squares, as well as crocheting in the round, changing color and more techniques used for making granny squares. We’ll practice creating the traditional granny square and discuss the different ways squares can be used, from making blankets to clothing to bags. And, if time allows, we can look at other granny square designs and motifs that you can try.

Attendees will need to bring their own crochet hooks, size G or H. Attendees must know how to create a slip knot, chain, slip stitch and single crochet.

SPANISH CONVERSATION CIRCLE

Practice your Spanish in a friendly, relaxed setting! This program is perfect for adult learners (18+) who already have some experience speaking Spanish and want to improve their skills. Each week, we’ll focus on a new topic or enjoy free conversation while working on pronunciation, sentence building and expanding vocabulary. This is not a formal class — just a supportive space to practice, learn and gain confidence in speaking Spanish.

BASICS OF COMPOSTING

Stephen Seewoester from the Dallas County Master Gardeners will present his program

“Basics of Composting.” Patrons can learn everything they need to know about the benefits of compost, its four basic elements and how they can build a compost bin for their garden. Stephen became a Dallas County Master Gardener in 2015 and speaks on how to plan a garden, how to build a compost bin and use compost in your yard and garden, and other topics.

PLANTS AND SEEDS SWAP

Calling all plant lovers. Join us for a fun community swap at the library! Bring a starter plant, potted plant or seeds to exchange with fellow gardeners and take home something new to grow. The library will provide a few extra plants, basic care tips and reading lists to help your garden thrive. Everyone must bring a plant or seeds to trade. Plants should be free of pests or infestations and be labeled with the name and care of the plant or seeds.

Love movies? Join us for a monthly film club to discuss and critique movies here at the library! Attendees should watch each month’s movie prior to the group meeting, then join us for a lively discussion about the film. TEEN CRAFT FOR THE CAUSE: CROCHET A SQUARE FOR PROJECT LINUS

Bring a 6”x 6” crocheted square to the North Garland Library throughout March. Earn two hours of community service for each square. Squares will be sewn together for blankets that will be donated to Project Linus. Teens must provide their own supplies. Scan the QR code for more information on blanket guidelines and Project Linus.

INTRODUCTORY MAKER CLASSES

Learn about the Spark Maker Studio and develop maker techniques using our machines! These skills include sewing, embroidery, 3D printing, vinyl cutting (Cricut) and more. Taking an intro class on a machine lets you use that machine during any Open Lab. Most intro classes are available on the library’s website. A valid library card is required to use the makerspace and attend classes.
