SINGLETARY • DEAN GARLAND SCHOOL OF SOCIAL WORK Social work education is a rich and diverse professional journey that opens many doors for students, faculty and alumni to serve others and work for justice in our hurting world. You are likely reading this because those things matter to you, as well.

As you know, social work is a helping profession. It is an allied health profession. It is a community development profession. Social workers are therapists and counselors.

Social workers are executive directors and grant writers.

Social workers are wherever people need help, guidance, or support navigating systems, improving their lives, or coping with problems that can overwhelm them. Social workers help individuals, families and groups of people; they help them overcome obstacles, collaborate with others, and find a way to gather the tools to take care of themselves.

Social work is a growing field. There are more and more jobs in the profession, and the profession is growing in ways people haven’t been able to predict. A decade ago, social workers were just beginning to understand human trafficking and the effects of trauma; now these are increasing areas where social workers are making a substantial difference. Social workers have long cared about mental health; today, the majority of mental health providers in the country are social workers.

In addition, social work, and particularly social work education at Baylor University, recognizes the importance of religion and spirituality as a part of our life’s journey. Many of our students are interested in social work because of the way their faith has motivated them. As part of our program, they have the opportunity to learn about the ethical integration of these beliefs with the values of the profession.

In this day and age, social work education is a remarkable place to develop the knowledge, values, and skills to make a difference in the world around us. And, the Garland School of Social Work is uniquely positioned to prepare social workers in a Christian context for worldwide service and leadership. Assessing homeless services in Houston

Supporting military and first responder marriages

Assessing client views of religious/spiritual beliefs

Dr. Danielle Parrish has been researching how to better serve homeless youth as part of a grant sponsored by SEARCH Homeless Services in Houston. She is assessing current services offered, how they are performing, and how they can better serve the homeless population. Dr. Parrish has also partnered with SEARCH as a contract research scientist for two years. She is involved in several research and quality improvement projects focused on improving services for individuals, families and children who have been chronically homeless or housing insecure. Projects include a restorative community collaboration between SEARCH and local congregations to offer a joint meal, mentorship and psychoeducational group; a study to increase SEARCH's preschool attendance; evaluation of a new “wet housing” site and program; and an analysis of service and outcome data from a local 1185 Medicaid Waiver program focused on mental health and jail diversion.

The Chris Kyle Frog Foundation began a partnership with the Garland School of Social Work to enrich the marriages of active military, veteran, and first responder couples that openly struggle with balancing their service and its impact (including trauma and shifting schedules) and marriage. This led to the development of the Mastering Your Marriage project, spearheaded by Dr. Dennis Myers and Dean Jon Singletary.

The program includes an intense weekend retreat with ~24 selected couples, followed by a six-month online curriculum to work through various topics surrounding marriage enrichment. Out of that, the research team is now working to train practitioners in the program to customize their treatment based on the clients' service backgrounds, thus providing specialized therapy options for this unique population.

A primary mission within the GSSW is to equip social workers and conduct research on the ethical integration of faith in social work practice. To better understand this area of practice, Associate Dean Holly Oxhandler is conducting a national survey of current mental health clients’ views regarding being asked about and discussing their religious or spiritual beliefs or practices in mental health treatment. This project is part of a larger grant from the John Templeton Foundation entitled, “Fostering Spiritual and Religious Competencies in Mental Health Care.”

Though her previous research has shown that mental health care providers are not often trained in this area of practice, clients tend to prefer their religion/spirituality be integrated and for the mental health care provider to first bring up the topic.

practical application

Empowering women and girls around the state The Garland School of Social Work received funding primarily focused on supporting students to hone in on a particular area, population, or social justice issue within social work practice. MSW Program Director and Lecturer Sarah Ritter leads the SERVE Project, seeking to Support, Encourage, Respect, Value, and Empower women and girls. The project is funded by the Grant Me the Wisdom Foundation to learn how to best serve women and children who have experienced traumatic events. Six Waco and Houston MSW students focused their training on serving this vulnerable population and shared their knowledge with others through publications, presentations, course assignments, and a conference at our Houston Campus in the spring.

Examining congregational discernment around difficult topics The Garland School's Center for Church and Community Impact (C3I) is another noteworthy resource within the school for a variety of projects and equipping events.

Recently, Drs. Gaynor Yancey and Helen Harris received funding from the Baugh Family Foundation to conduct a national, multi-denominational study examining congregational discernment on difficult topics, building on previous research

by Dean Singletary, Dr. Harris and Carolyn Cole. Related is the award from the Texas Woman's Missionary Union’s Mary Hill Davis missions offering to C3I and Dr. Yancey.

The project offers a traumainformed care workshop series for congregational staff and laypersons.

Supporting student mental health at Waco ISD To better assess and support the emotional, mental, and behavioral health needs among students in the Waco ISD, the GSSW received funding from WISD to carry out the BEAR (Be Emotionally Aware and Responsive) project. Social work services in school settings help to partialize and address student needs in ways that are beyond the scope of teachers' training and role. The BEAR Project focuses specifically on addressing behavioral health in the classroom and works to increase staff, student, and families’ skills to regulate and reduce disruptive behaviors.

In addition, the GSSW received an award from the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health for a project entitled: “Transitioning to Mental Wellness: Improving Academic Achievement Through Mental Health.” The team focuses on formulating an effective transition plan to support students and to reduce the risk of repeatedly returning to alternative placement.

SOCIAL WORKINITIATIVES GLOBAL MISSION LEADERSHIP The Global Mission Leadership (GML) Initiative of the Garland School of Social Work contributes to Christ-centered international development by cultivating reciprocal cross-cultural learning, encouraging responsible engagement with faith-based communities, and engaging in collaborative scholarship that allows communities around the world to thrive. The GML Scholarship Program nurtures leadership and innovation in global Christian leaders by enabling them to earn an MSW from Baylor University that prepares them to return to their home countries with an increased capacity for transformational service while also providing global perspectives to GSSW students and faculty.

Through the GML program, students share their knowledge and expertise, grow academically, strengthen leadership and practice skills, and diversify networks.

GERONTOLOGY

TRAUMA RESPONSE

How should we respond to the inevitable care demands of an increasing 55+ population of vulnerable persons due to illness, loneliness and poverty? Quality of life suffers as economic support programs, health care systems, and family care-giving resources are marginalized in the press of increasing need. The aging of the Baby Boomer population widens the gap between need and resource, heightening the urgency for more coordinated, responsive, and innovative approaches to care.

What are the implications of these compelling realities for ministry and professional practice? We work to prepare students to find answers through holistic practice and research in gerontology and by producing state-of-the-science resources and practical models for the well-being of older persons, their families, residential care environments, congregations, and communities. We focus on issues of the elderly and their families, drawing together several educational, research, and application-based projects focused on improving quality of life for older persons.

Trauma is a frequent focus of practice in social work. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in veterans and soldiers, depression and anxiety in survivors of trafficking and abuse, complicated mourning in survivors of disaster, suicide and homicide, and many other health and mental health conditions are the result of trauma. Whether responding to the fertilizer plant explosion in West or preparing to work with survivors of sex trafficking in Cambodia, GSSW students and graduates are engaged in trauma work. The initiative includes intentional focus on direct practice and community practice responses to trauma. A number of faculty members in the school provide leadership in the preparation of practitioners to work with trauma, crisis, and mental health both domestically and globally, and are actively researching and publishing in the area of trauma response with particular interest around practice and research in the effectiveness of EMDR among other cutting-edge practices in the area.

DIVERSITY The GSSW seeks to advance the inclusion of social work's ethical responsibility to their clients by increasing awareness around cultural competency and social diversity. We provide opportunities for faculty and students to research and address social work practice pedagogy around these issues prevalent among the individuals, families, and communities we serve. As a school, we are helping to encourage anti-oppressive practices in our midst as well as campus-wide. Faculty serve across the university from the President’s Diversity Council and the student success center’s Illuminate to the Hispanic Student Success Initiative and Baylor in Latin America. Faculty and staff are actively engaged in research around diversity, and students are offered the opportunity to choose a diversity specialization during their advanced year of the MSW. Students are also encouraged to voice what they see as needs and concerns for student and/or faculty learning regarding issues of diversity.

CONGREGATIONAL SOCIAL WORK Many times in congregations, spiritual and outreach activities are intertwined. Congregational social workers can provide vital leadership in these church functions. Here, we raise awareness of the resource that social workers can be for strengthening congregations and ministries. We train students to conduct congregational research, develop full-time congregational staff positions and strengthen community transformation initiatives in their communities. In addition, the GSSW also works with congregations through the Center for Church and Community Impact or C3I. C3I provides research and hands-on training to congregations, denominational agencies and religiously affiliated organizations that bridge the divide between church and community.

2019 marks 50 years since the inception of the social work program at Baylor University. We salute the pioneering leadership of our Founding Chair Dr. Preston Dyer and our Founding Dean Dr. Diana Garland.

GIVINGOPPORTUNITIES GSSW EXCELLENCE FUND

Gifts to this fund help the Diana R. Garland School of Social Work provide hands-on opportunities for students to practice social work which comes in many forms. The GSSW has many "extra" uses for these gifts, beyond what the operational budget can provide, such as technology updates, classroom equipment, conference attendance for students to learn from the best, research materials, hosting our own workshops, or starting new programs and initiatives.

HOUSTON EXCELLENCE FUND

The first Houston MSW program launched in fall 2015, extending the Baylor social work program beyond Baylor's Waco campus. Support for the Houston Excellence Fund aids in the success of the program by providing for much-needed educational tools and opportunities specifically for Houston students and faculty, as well as scholarships and financial aid for those attending the Houston Campus.

PRESTON AND GENIE DYER SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Preston and Genie Dyer have served Baylor for more than 50 years. Dr. Preston Dyer became the first chair of the newly created Social Work Department in 1969.

He and his wife, Dr. Genie Dyer, taught a Marriage and Families class for many years. Through this fund, the GSSW hopes to increase much-needed scholarship support for students majoring in social work while showing support of the Dyers' service and celebrating 50 years of social work education at Baylor.

W.O. CARVER SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Faith has always been a distinctive of the master's program at the Garland School of Social Work. To honor of the role faith has played and to highlight the importance of the intersection of faith and practice, friends of the school created a matching gift for the W.O. Carver Endowed Scholarship acknowledging the legacy of the Carver School of Church Social Work where Diana served and that influenced so much of who we are today.
