The CLOUD has Take a quick mental inventory of the technology
WALLS
by Jenna McWethy,
Garland Chamber of Commerce
in your home or office. You probably own a smartphone. You might have a desktop computer; maybe a laptop or a tablet. Now don’t forget about your smartwatch, or that speaker in the corner that responds when you call it by name. You might have game consoles, smart TVs, or maybe even a fridge that can tell you the weather. If you drive a late-model vehicle, you probably have some tech on the dashboard too. By now you might be thinking, “Gosh, that’s a whole lot of tech!” And it is. And you’re just one person. Now, let’s dig a little deeper. All the data Siri and Alexa collect on your personal preferences, all the passwords you have saved, all the content for the websites you visit, and all the photos you store must live somewhere … but where? “The cloud!” you can say with confidence; and you’re right. All that data lives in the cloud … but where’s that? As you may have guessed by the title at the top of the page, this cloud isn’t somewhere floating above your head in the sky. The cloud lives inside the walls of data centers all over the world and, perhaps, in one right down the street. RagingWire Data Centers, Inc. celebrated the grand opening of its TX1 Data Center, located on Lookout Drive in Garland, on April 18, 2017. Owned by NTT (one of the world’s largest information and communications technology solutions providers), RagingWire offers its customers the ability to leverage NTT’s global presence of 140 data centers in 20 countries and regions. This enables RagingWire clients to reach international markets as well as scale up their data center capacity as needed.
RagingWire operates approximately 2 million square feet of data center infrastructure between its campus here in Garland as well as campuses in Ashburn, Virginia and Northern California. The company has growth plans in these locations and other top North American data center markets. RagingWire’s 16-megawatt facility in Garland is only the first of a planned 5-building complex, and the next buildings are expected to be twostory, 32-megawatt-capacity facilities. If the power increment measure is unfamiliar to you, 32 megawatts represents the power of about 500 homes. It’s a lot of power. President and CEO Doug Adams explained that RagingWire is essentially a data center island, one of many, connected by fiber to other data center islands throughout the world. Together, the servers housed within them form the large, interconnected ecosystem of the internet – something most of us utilize every day. The market for data storage co-location facilities like this one continues to increase throughout the globe and RagingWire is consistently outpacing the market at 20 percent annual growth. So, getting back to the question, the cloud, at an ever-increasing rate, lives here and in other centers very much like it.

“Cloud is just code for servers that are multi-tenancy within a data center,” Adams said. “That’s all a cloud is. Just shared servers.” Adams has been with RagingWire since about six months after the company was founded 18 years ago. He’s poured his career into making it what it is today, and even joked that he thinks of the company as his fourth child. Adams went on to explain that as companies grow, they often move from cloud storage to something called co-location, which is when a company takes their own servers and puts them into a data center. “Think of us as a hotel,” Adams said. “They check out a room in our hotel and they put their infrastructure in our hotel.” Because major cloud providers are also in the RagingWire “hotel,” clients can connect into those cloud providers to do processing and access additional storage, which moves the client into hybrid storage – the most popular method – simply meaning they use a mix of co-location and cloud. This kind of diversity and proximity is particularly important in the data center industry. “In our industry there’s this concept called latency, which is the amount of time it takes for a data packet to travel,” Adams said. “Some applications COMMUNITY GUIDE AND BUSINESS DIRECTORY | T H E G A R L A N D G U I D E 2 0 1 9 | 11

won’t handle latency. They’re chatty. They like to talk back and forth.” So, not only is it important for clients to be in a data center network that has quick, close cloud access, but also one that has representation in the large data markets. Texas is the third largest market in the United States, behind Northern Virginia and Silicon Valley. From a latency standpoint, Texas and Chicago have emerged as critical in servicing the middle U.S. Texas is a particularly attractive location for data center companies for other characteristics as well, including the fact that Texas is on its own power grid, and the state offers a low cost of power, inexpensive land, and a highly educated labor pool. Chief Revenue Officer Joe Goldsmith added that Garland had its own competitive advantages when RagingWire was searching for its Texas site. “Garland specifically has a power company that’s very favorable in delivering power and services in large capacity to the data center providers,” Goldsmith said. “Garland Power & Light wants to sell us power, wants to be a business partner, and then of course the City of Garland – very development friendly – wants to continue to see development in Garland. And so when we talk about our development here with Garland, the City partners with us to make sure that our development goes through and that we can get up and go.” From a tax value and power usage perspective, Garland leaders know data centers are great for communities. Data centers bring 24-7 power draws to market, which is important for power grids, and they buy a lot of power. From an environmental standpoint, they’re also quite efficient. Large, multi-tenant data centers have a smaller carbon footprint versus smaller aggregate data centers, but income and efficiency aren’t the only community advantages to developments like this one. RagingWire’s first facility brought in about 250 construction jobs for about a year of construction – and they’ll do that several more times. For ongoing operations, the center employs about 75 individuals, most of whom are from Garland and the surrounding area. Yet another one of Garland’s advantages in competing for new developments in the region is the availability of a skilled, available workforce. Local workers mean more of the dollars stay in the community, which helps facilitate a strong, sustainable city.
Unique to RagingWire in the area of workforce is the fact that it employs its own security guards, many of whom are veterans of the armed forces. Almost one-third of the company’s employees come from a military background, primarily in the critical facilities operations groups. Goldsmith explained, “People say, ‘What’s the parallel?’ between military operations and data centers. The common thread is mission critical. [In the military], you’re working on a particularly dangerous piece of equipment that, if handled improperly, can hurt somebody. It’s missioncritical stuff. If I don’t do it right, somebody or something could get hurt and something bad is going to happen; so I’m going to do it right. It’s that type of performer that we look for.” As the mission-critical emphasis implies, RagingWire places a high priority on the physical security of the servers housed within its walls. To date, the company has never experienced a physical security breach. In addition to highly-trained security personnel and strict protocols, RagingWire also employs a tactic called “defense in depth,” something you’ll experience yourself should you ever have the opportunity to visit. “In a castle you’ve got a moat and you’ve got a drawbridge, then you’ve got an inner area, and then you’ve got the tower,” Adams said. “By the time you’re done, when a castle gets sieged, the king is sitting up at the top of the tower with the jewels. He’s waiting for all of the different areas to be breached before you actually get to the king. That’s the idea here.” RagingWire provides extensive physical security on the machines, the people coming in, new machines coming in through the loading dock, and every piece of the data center floor. At that point, what happens to the machine, inside the fiber and the network and the software, that’s up to the client. It’s a partnership between RagingWire and its clients to ensure the integrity of data and the systems housed inside. Adams and Goldsmith together continued to give glimpses of the magnificent scope and necessity of data storage in the technology-centric world in which we all live. Artificial intelligence, healthcare records, gaming, apps, television shows, and streaming music … the amount of servers necessary to store the data we consume on a daily basis is staggering, and it’s growing all the time. So, the next time you pass RagingWire, or any of the many data centers in North Texas, you can know that the facility is both a benefit to the economy, and your very own way of life. They store the data for the companies we depend on, and we can depend on RagingWire to keep innovating and providing highquality, scalable business support for many years to come. “We enjoy building and creating and so, for us, we’re really having fun,” Adams said. “To me, I can’t see myself doing absolutely anything else than what I’m doing. I absolutely love this company. I love what I do, I love the people, I love the product. We’ve just got a great company.”

IMPACT
HAS NO AGE REQUIREMENT Change is inevitable. We all know that. Whether it’s the climate, your physical appearance, the construction on your commute, or your home address; some level of change is always in progress. Making an impact, however, that’s optional. Impact is change with influence. It has a real effect on something. You can be part of a community and, by no effort of your own, be associated with a change; or, you can cause a change that changes everything. There’s a tangible difference. When someone makes a change, you might notice. When someone makes an impact, you take note.
By Jenna McWethy : Garland Chamber of Commerce
They’ve set their own goals. They’ve taken on their own challenges. They’re people you could aspire to be like when you grow up - even if you’re already older than they are! But that’s the thing. For these professionals, and countless others like them, age isn’t a limiting factor. There’s no age requirement to make an impact. The only requirement is that you make a choice; and if you need a little inspiration, just turn the page.
There’s been a lot of talk about young professionals and the changes they bring to the work environment. The influences of growing up with technology and a whole list of other factors have made men and women under 40 a little bit different than their predecessors in the workplace – but these differences come with great advantages as well. Just ask any of the three young professionals you see here. All are in their 30s. All are exceptional at what they do. And all are making an impact in the Garland community. In the next few pages you’ll meet three incredible professionals who haven’t let age stand in their way. They’ve excelled largely because of the freedom that comes with not being entrenched in the way things have always been done.

HADI DANESHYAR Plant Manager, The Kraft Heinz Company (32) Hadi Daneshyar first set foot in a factory when he was only 2 years old. His father and grandfather were both in the manufacturing business, and while he didn’t set out for a career in manufacturing, it was certainly an industry with which he’d had a lifelong familiarity. The right opportunity came knocking while Daneshyar was getting his degree in Supply Chain Management in Phoenix, Arizona. H. J. Heinz was recruiting an intern to help with a continuous improvement project in Lean Six Sigma and, being in love with the methodology at the time, he figured, “Why not?” Having worked his way up through positions in Phoenix, San Diego, and now Garland, Texas, Daneshyar has accumulated a great deal of experience at just 32 years of age – something he largely attributes to company culture. “When I take a look at factory managers across the board, most of my peers are in their mid-50s. Most of the production managers are probably in their 30s and 40s. I had the pleasure of being a production manager at the age of 25. I was able to jump into those positions and opportunities because of the culture that Kraft Heinz cultivates.” Now, he’s using his influence as a plant manager to cultivate a positive, team-focused culture in the Garland plant by simply being involved and in tune with the people as well as the process. “I believe morale and productivity are directly correlated. For a plant manager, you’ve got to understand how your people are feeling, what’s going on with them. Distractions lead to issues. We’re only as strong as our weakest link, so we’ve got to continuously help each other. If we’re going to let each other down, we’re letting ourselves down ultimately.”
Who influenced you? Growing up my parents instilled the values and work ethic which set the foundation during my upbringing. As I began my professional career – My first mentor was my first Plant Manager coming out of college. He continues to influence me until today and we touch base weekly. I consider myself fortunate to have had our company’s SVP also be a mentor that has taken me under his wing for the longest time and always had that open line of communication to bounce ideas off of him. I’ve had great role models that I’ve looked up to in terms of leaders that I respected in the organization that were able to influence, had charisma, and were complete servant leaders – nothing was about them, in fact it was quite the contrary. Those are the people that I emulated over the years. I would say one of the practices that made me successful was being very cognizant of who I was going to choose as my mentors early on in my career and benchmark them to continuously learn from and maintain touch points with.”
What do you value in the culture of a company? “I’m coming up to my tenth year anniversary with the company. The thing that stands out to me about Kraft Heinz is the culture of meritocracy and ownership. Kraft Heinz is a company that would give young millennials the right opportunities, and they do not look at age- myself being a perfect example. They look for high performers and they’re willing to take the risk and bet on those individuals. As a plant manager I do not look at age, race or gender. I’m proud to say that I have a very diverse team ranging from millennials all the way to boomers on the verge of retirement that come from all corners of the globe. If someone has the bandwidth or the potential, I provide them with the opportunity to go ahead and try. Let them take their shot. I’d rather you take your shot than stand on the sidelines and watch. I believe in a culture that perceives winning and learning, not winning and losing”
“You’ve got to break through the barriers, show them an effective way and lead by example” — Hadi Daneshyar
Has there ever been a time you were overlooked or underestimated because of your age? “It was a challenge in the past, so yes. However, since the acquisition, Kraft Heinz has evolved and cultivated a new culture that’s being refined by our CEO, Bernardo Hees, who’s a true advocate and believer in Meritocracy and Ownership. The company truly shifted to valuing and rewarding high performers that possess an owners’ mentality. In the past you had to put in your time and be in a position for ‘x’ amount of years before you can be considered for the next position, now we value talent that contribute and deliver results which accelerate people to their potential. If you’re driven and have what it takes to do the position, I don’t think you should hold someone back because of their age. They might not have all the experience, but they come with fresh new ideas and innovation that can really create a competitive advantage over the status quo.”
What advice would you give the next generation coming into the workforce? “Number one, practice the platinum rule rather than the golden rule. Treat people the way they want to be treated, not the way you want to be treated. If you can establish that respect and rapport with people you can begin to influence and move the masses. One of the biggest challenges for young talented leaders is being able to move and shape seasoned people that are set on their ways, folks that are resistant to change. Most people resist change, however change is inevitable and is the only constant. ‘You’ve got to break through the barriers, show them an effective way and lead by example!’”
What do you value most about what you do? “My ability to impact my employees lives in a positive way. Helping them find their purpose and how their contribution is making an overall difference for the company and community brings meaning to them. Motivating them to reach their potential and making sure they get what they want as long as they do their part. Being able to influence them in a greater way and make their lives better brings me satisfaction.”

How do you achieve a work-life balance that works for you? “I’ve heard quite a few things. The old school mentality talks about work-life balance and then there’s this new perspective, I think it stems from Jeff Besos, the CEO of Amazon, he talks about work-life harmony. It’s all about, if you’re happy at what you do, it’s going to reflect in all other aspects of your life. If you’re miserable at what you do, it’s also going to carry on in different aspects of your life. Figure out what makes you happy and do that. Then I think you pretty much have a key to success right there. You’ve got to figure out the big chunk of that pie, which is work. If you can figure out how to be happy there, I think you’re set for life.”
Who influenced you? “It’s a mix between my dad and my brother. I’ve always looked up to my brother. Still do. He’s awesome. I kind of mirrored my life and career around him. The way that he’s progressed in his career and what he’s done really motivated me to do what I’m doing. With my dad, he’s just a hard worker. The guy is always doing something. Always doing some project, always fixing something. If something’s broken, you don’t go buy a new one, you fix whatever it is. That totally is me. I’d rather spend the time trying to fix something that not. All that stuff transitions to your career. Your life habits come into what you do. I do want to give my mother credit too. She’s literally never met a stranger. She’s the most kind, nice person ever. I think on that side of things, that’s really helped with my community involvement. I get that from her as more of a social side – having a connection with people.”
How do you achieve a work-life balance that works for you? “I’ll be honest, I’m not the best at this, but sometimes you’ve just got to learn how to turn it off. Switch off the work thing and spend time with the family. You can always get back to it later. I think it’s important to block that time. One of the biggest things we do is travel. [My wife and I] really value that. You really do feel like you can disengage. It’s something to look forward to as well. You know you’ve got this trip coming. It’s something to work toward.”
What do you value in the culture of a company? “We give people the ability to think on their own and come to solutions with little restrictions. If there’s a problem that needs to be solved, it’s not a narrow thing. It’s like, ‘Here’s the problem. We’re going to leave it up to you to figure it out and come to a solution,’ and then you get to do it. We value people that can step up and say, ‘Hey, I realize this process doesn’t work very well. I think if we did this instead, it would be awesome; and I’m willing to do it.’ We allow people the flexibility to do that sort of thing. If people are able to do that and also get their jobs done, that says a lot about that person. Those are the type of people we want.”
CHAD PRZANO Engineering Manager, Epiroc (36) Chad Przano credits his family for instilling the characteristics that have led him to success as a young professional. Hard-working parents and a brother 10 years his senior modeled work ethic in a way that sticks with him today as he leads his own team and projects as Engineering Manager for Epiroc, a drilling solutions manufacturing company in Garland, Texas. Recruited by Epiroc, which was then Atlas Copco, in his senior year at Texas A&M, Przano moved to DFW to work with a production group on maximizing efficiencies. His first manager guided him, but also put confidence in Przano to figure out the steps to reach the goals his team was working toward. “That instilled in me that the part I played was important.” Przano made several upward moves throughout the company’s operations, being pegged for some impressive opportunities, but his move to be a supervisor over the engineering testing team in 2012 proved to be a key experience in exposing him to more leadership responsibilities. Managing and motivating a big group of guys was a challenge with his limited experience. He had to learn on his feet, and he figured out pretty quickly that management isn’t a one-size-fits-all operation. Today, at just 36, Przano continues to excel in his field. He manages a product, a configuration team, and the supervisor of the engineering testing group he used to work with. His focus on finding efficiencies, doing things faster and better, makes him a key player on the Epiroc team. In fact, he was nominated and voted by his peers as Employee of the Year in 2015. “Credit goes to this company because they value their internal people. If you want something enough and you want to try to go after it, do it. People will try to help you if you show that you want to be helped.”
What advice would you give the next generation coming into the workforce? “Work hard. Nothing should be given to you. You earn what you get. Don’t feel like you’re owed anything. I totally understand the younger generation is a little bit different, but I do see hope in it. They’re super smart, they know what they want already. I hate when people say you’ve got to put in your time to get this thing. That’s not the case. If you earn that respect, whatever the ‘it’ thing is, it doesn’t matter how old you are as long as you make an impact and you can do it – that’s what matters.”
“We value people that can step up and say, ‘Hey, I realize this process doesn’t work very well. I think if we did this instead, it would be awesome; and I’m willing to do it.’”
Has there ever been a time you were overlooked or underestimated because of your age? “I don’t know. Maybe. I have applied for a lot of jobs I didn’t get. I don’t know if age was the reason. I think it was experience. As I go through stuff now I think, yeah, I didn’t know that three or four years ago. There have been positions I’ve gone after that I probably wasn’t ready for, and maybe I knew that, but that doesn’t and won’t ever deter me from trying for a position because I feel like I can do it even though I’m lacking some things. I can always learn those skills or traits.”
What do you value most about what you do? “It’s cool to see the growth of people. My next step is to see how I can grow the people who work underneath me, to encourage them to maybe take the same path I did if they choose to. That’s the thing that’s most rewarding – that I enjoy the most.”

SHEENA SHARAPATA Director of Training and Recruitment, Marketing, Events & Promotions, Randall Reed’s Prestige Ford (32)
Sheena Sharapata is living the dream. Following in her Dad’s footsteps, she began working in the automotive industry shortly after graduating from the University of Oklahoma. Though her degree was in advertising, her formative years were spent dominating the soccer field and she longed for competition in her adult life as well. Working for Ford seemed to fit the bill. With a name like Sharapata, the family ties were easy to follow and, based on the merits of her father who had previously worked with Reed, Randall Reed himself invited her to interview for a new recruiting, hiring and training position at his Garland dealership. Her own merits quickly earned her the job, and then when a community relations and events position became available, she was the obvious choice. At just 32, Sharapata leads community-focused initiatives like Drive 4UR School and Fill a Ford F-150, both of which benefit local school programs and charities. She also organizes larger veteran-focused events including golf tournaments and clay shoots. Her commitment to the Garland community, her creative ideas, and her energy, make things happen. Now she’s a key player in bringing an expansion project to the dealership, something she’s never done before. But new isn’t scary for Sharapata. She embraces the opportunity to keep learning, keep evolving, and keep finding new ways to make an impact. “A lot of people just get comfortable and they’re OK with the everyday. Don’t be afraid to make the jump and take the challenges. Stop thinking about the what-ifs that are negative and think about the whatifs that are positive. It could be life changing.”
What do you value most about what you do? “Ever since I was little I’ve just kind of put others first before myself, so I’ve always wanted to get into non-profit work and community relations. That’s always been my life-long passion. If you could do something that you wanted to do, that’s what I wanted to get to. Coming into Randall Reed’s Prestige Ford family, they’ve enabled me to be passionate about my work, be involved in the community, help others, and give back. Going to work every day doesn’t seem like work to me. It’s a genuine love for what I do.”
What do you value in the culture of a company? “Definitely the teamwork. All of our management has been there consistently for numerous years. It’s more of a family. I value that they have the confidence in me to allow me the freedom to run with my ideas. A lot of companies you may not have that. They allow you to express your ideas and run with them.”
Who influenced you? “My parents. My dad worked for Ford Motor Company for 39 years. Growing up, I saw him in this business role and he would come home and hang out with us, but then he would be on his computer working and I just saw the drive and commitment and energy and passion that he had. I kind of followed in his footsteps. All growing up it was kind of like, OK, I want to be just like my dad. My mom, she’s always been there to listen to me, no matter the situation I’m going through. I probably call her like 3 times a day to talk to her and bounce ideas off of her.”
How do you achieve a work-life balance that works for you? “It’s really challenging. When I do have down time, I spend it with family and friends, but I feel like it’s not really work. I feel like I’m always looking to volunteer or what’s the next way I can give back. My mind is always thinking, ‘How can we connect all these people to help everyone?’”
Has there ever been a time you were overlooked or underestimated because of your age? “I would say, growing up in the car business with my age, that can affect you some. It’s mainly people think you don’t have the experience or the knowledge. I was a service advisor when I was younger, so people may have thought, ‘Oh, she doesn’t have the proper knowledge to explain what’s going on with my vehicle.’ I always did my research, my studying, always trying to expand my knowledge, and I would be able to provide that feedback. I’ve just been blessed with the companies I’ve worked for where they have had the confidence in me to be able to run with my ideas and prove with my results that I can coordinate these events, I can get the community involvement, so now age isn’t even a factor.”
“They’ve enabled me to be passionate about my work, be involved in the community, help others, and give back.” — Sheena Sharapata

What advice would you give the next generation coming into the workforce? “Find what you’re passionate about. A lot of people just go out to find a job to find one. Really try to find something that interests you, and then whatever you’re doing, give 110 percent. Whatever you find as your passion, do the research, do the homework. Find something that isn’t work for you, that you truly enjoy, and love doing every day.”

The Next Big Thing in Food Production is a Small Business By Judith Collins, Dallas Metropolitan Small Business Development Center
So, what’s new among Millennials in Garland? In addition to awesome Millennial-ownedbusiness success stories like Intrinsic Smokehouse & Brewery in Downtown Garland, SimiDigi, Inc. and Pinot’s Palette at Firewheel Town Center, the Garland small business community is proud to welcome Tyler Shin, owner and operator of Revolving Kitchen. Shin aims to give back to the hundreds of local entrepreneurial families who own and operate a catering or food truck business or dream of opening a restaurant. “We developed Revolving Kitchen as an innovational food
production space designed to help local businesses grow regionally and expand nationally,” Shin said. “Our 25 private commissary kitchens, spacious storage facilities and modern amenities provide local businesses the opportunity to achieve growth at a fraction of the cost typically involved in the food production industry.” Before you start a food business in Texas, whether it’s a restaurant, catering business, or a food truck, you need to consider some basic legal requirements. Catering businesses, for example, must navigate the complex regulations that dictate which foods are allowed to be prepared in a home kitchen versus a commercial kitchen. Food trucks must adhere to strict cleaning and overnight parking restrictions. And restaurants must acquire
necessary permits and adhere to applicable city, state and federal food production guidelines. Revolving Kitchen seeks to reduce the required startup costs and minimize the administrative headaches involved in food production. On average, startup costs in the restaurant business can run up to hundreds of thousands of dollars, if not more. Revolving Kitchen manages the challenge of sourcing leased food production spaces by providing affordable, privately-leased commercial kitchens at a fraction of the cost food producers would normally incur. “The fact is that while the food industry as a whole is evolving like never before, the current model for food production facilities is stuck in the past,” Shin said. “Up-and-coming food concept
designers looking to launch their product and established restaurants hoping to expand their mobile app delivery services need not spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to open their own commercial kitchen—or incur the numerous risks involved in doing so. Revolving Kitchen provides private, state-of-the-art kitchens for businesses to rent on an asneeded basis. We are the AirBnb of the food industry.”
Revolving Kitchen is conveniently located near I-635 and Skillman St. and anticipates its grand opening in January 2019. To accommodate the growing number of clients, Revolving Kitchen is now accepting member applications. Please visit www. revolvingkitchen.com for further information.

EDUCATION TRANSFORMS LIVES Believing that education transforms lives, Garland ISD recently implemented the innovative, new Accelerating Campus Excellence (ACE) program at two of its campuses. Handley Elementary School and Lyles Middle School launched ACE in 2018-19, providing students a proven platform for closing achievement and opportunity gaps. GISD is just the fourth district in Texas to implement ACE, which focuses on strategic staffing and student support. New features for ACE campuses include an extended school day, allowing for increased instructional time to focus on critical subjects like English and math, tutoring, homework help and more. ACE campuses also stay open until 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, offering a variety of enrichment activities.
Because a priority of the program is to offer social and emotional care, many other basic needs are also provided. Some of these include discounted uniforms, breakfast, lunch and dinner, and free evening transportation on Monday through Thursday for students who stay until 6 p.m. Additionally, the team of highly effective educators recruited for these campuses were hand-picked from across GISD, offered an opportunity to earn financial incentives and the chance to co-build a dynamic and transformative learning environment alongside talented peers. “We have seen such an incredible transformation,” said Chief Academic Officer Jovan Wells. “We look forward to the continued and increased success that our students and campuses will experience as part of ACE.”
ONE GOAL. ONE FOCUS. What is the impact of more than 8,000 employees uniting to achieve one common goal? Profound. In Garland ISD, the district is collaboratively focused on ensuring all students graduate prepared for college, careers and life. The GISD Board of Trustees adopted this shared objective in 2018, which also includes per-
formance targets for areas such as early literacy, English language acquisition, scientific understanding, mathematical proficiency, post-secondary readiness and student management. To view all of the targets, please visit bit.ly/gisdgoal and join us as #goaldiggers for student success.
PARTNER WITH US Community involvement in our schools is vital to student success. From becoming a business partner to volunteering at a campus to taking advantage of a parent education course, there are a variety of ways you can get involved. For more than a quarter century, the Garland ISD Education Foundation (GEF) has provided resources to support and enrich education for all students. Without strong partnerships with community organizations, GEF could not fulfill its mission to award grants and scholarships to district staff and students. Make an impact through GEF by making a donation, participating in the annual Golf Tournament, creating a scholarship, or honoring a loved one with a commemorative brick at the Curtis Culwell Center. Visit www.gisdedfoundation.org for details. You can also help make a difference in the life of a child by volunteering at a district campus. Read to a student, assist during an after-school activity, or speak to a class about your profession–any of these activities are appreciated and welcome. Want to get started? Visit www.garlandisd.net/volunteer to complete an application. Research indicates that parents who are active members in their child’s education are essential to academic progress. In Garland ISD, we want you to partner with us to help your child excel. The district’s Family and Community Engagement Department offers workshops throughout the year. These special classes help with effective parenting strategies, involvement ideas, and tips to encourage student success in school and life. See upcoming events at www.garlandisd.net/face.

INNOVATION IN EDUCATION Brings Drone Pilot Apprenticeships to Nor th Texas Drones are everywhere … in the skies as fireworks for the Fourth of July, overhead checking power lines during Texas ice storms, in the air checking crime scenes and over neighborhoods and parks for recreational purposes. Regardless of application, drones are here to stay in the workplace and at home – and the need for qualified drone pilots will only increase in the future. Representatives from the U.S. Department of Labor, RMS Aerospace and the Texas Workforce Commission formalized a partnership in 2018 that marked the start of the first DOL registered apprenticeship in unmanned aerial systems, or UAS. “This partnership is the result of a collaborative effort to bring the nation’s first registered apprenticeship in unmanned aerial systems to North Texas,” Mark Hays, DCCCD’s vice chancellor for workforce and economic development, said. “We at DCCCD are thrilled to be part of this leading-edge technology and also to be helping North Texas residents obtain skills in UAS technologies. RMS Aerospace and the U.S. Department of Labor have been exemplary partners, and we couldn’t be more proud to serve as part of this team.” Hays added, “DCCCD and RMS Aerospace are committed to making North Texas the ‘Silicon Valley’ of drone technologies.
This partnership will benefit our residents by enabling them to obtain excellent jobs as well as providing the latest technologies that will benefit a multitude of companies throughout our region.”
Speaking to the value of innovation in education, Hays remarked, “This partnership is an example of how higher education must be at the forefront of encouraging innovation in our economy.
DCCCD and Addison-based RMS Aerospace will collaborate to implement and operate the nation’s first integrated drone education program; its mission is to produce standardized, safe and professional UAS operators for government and commercial industries. “This apprenticeship is the first program operated outside the U.S. military that will provide a comprehensive training experience: airmanship, geographic information systems (GIS) mapping technology, payload, project management and information processing,” Russell Julian, CEO of RMS Aerospace, said. “Apprentices who are enrolled in the UAS program will earn four marketable licenses granted by the Federal Aviation Administration and the Federal Communications Commission.”
That doesn’t necessarily mean that higher education comes up with innovative products and ideas, but it must not stand in the way of them either.
At a signing ceremony in July 2018, RMS Aerospace also announced the implementation of the North Texas Unmanned Aerial Systems Center of Excellence, which will serve as an accelerator for drone technology by creating job growth and economic development in the North Texas region. DCCCD will assist with those efforts. “The center also will provide support efforts related to the region’s existing UAS firms by accelerating the movement of their technologies and services from concept to market,” according to RMS Aerospace.

Encouraging students to think entrepreneurially, even though they may never be entrepreneurs themselves, is critical if our workforce is to be competitive. Higher education programs must foster critical thinking and innovative ideas.”

Residential Real Estate Incorporated in 1891, the city of Garland is home to about 238,000 residents, making it the fifth largest city in the DFW Metroplex and twelfth largest in Texas. As part of the fourth-largest region in the nation, one that continues to attract new business, corporate expansions and hundreds of new residents every day, the city of Garland prides itself on its strength of industry as well as its diverse neighborhoods and offers residents the best of both urban and suburban living. According to the 2018 study by Money-Rates.com, Texas ranks third among all 50 states for the Best Places to Make a Living. The study’s rankings are based on each state’s average salary, cost of living, employment rate and workplace conditions. Garland itself ranks number 13 on the list of Hardest-Working Cities in America, and in the top 50 on a WalletHub list of 2018’s Best Places to Find a Job, which is no surprise given the community’s focus on sustainable economic development. The range of diverse opportunities available and the affordable cost of living invites people from all corners of the world to call Garland home.
Attractive Housing Options In conjunction with the rapid growth of the North Texas region, the city has taken proactive steps to provide excellent opportunities for its residents who enjoy living and working here. Garland offers a wide variety of housing options, many of which expanded in 2018 to accommodate new residents and changing demand in the D-FW market. In fact, as of the end of 2018, 13 residential developments were under construction, or had been approved for construction, including apartment complexes like the City Square Lofts in Downtown Garland, and single-family home subdivisions like Riverset, which is at the southwest corner of Buckingham and Shiloh.

“Quite simply, it’s easy to live in Garland,” Malinda Howell said. Howell is the sales manager of Ebby Halliday Realtors’ Richardson–190 Office, a regional powerhouse office that serves the housing needs of Garland and beyond. “Our region is one of the most affordable in the country. Residents enjoy a high standard of living, with consistently lower costs for housing, groceries, transportation and health care compared to other major U.S. metropolitan areas.” During the past decade, the Dallas-Fort Worth region has been among the nation’s fastest-growing areas, attracting significant job and population growth. That population growth has fueled real estate development and brought many new residents to Garland. Today, it’s one of only four D-FW suburbs with populations exceeding 200,000, and offers residents and newcomers an abundance of choices as they search for the home that best fits their needs. Based on the cost of housing compared to median family income, home prices in Garland remain some of the most affordable in the country. The bottom line for families is that a dollar buys more square feet per home in Garland while offering a superb quality of life.

A Convenient Way to Reach the City
Garland Offers App for City Service Requests EAssist, an app available from the City of Garland, is an easy way for residents to connect with the City to submit service requests, access news and information, and see other nearby requests in progress. EAssist also is available on the City’s website, GarlandTX. gov. Approximately 60 different service request types are available to residents. “A resident can simply enter the request type and select the location using their device’s GPS capabilities, and then it automatically routes it to the City department for resolution,” said Kevin Slay, Managing Director of Customer Service. “We will keep looking for ways to expand and improve the mobile app and online options.” Once the app is downloaded, users will be required to create an account using an email address or linking to their Facebook accounts. Once created, users can set what type of notifications they receive, how they are delivered, and several other customizations.
EAssist Garland is available now for free download at the Apple App and Google Play Stores.
“EAssist empowers our residents,” Slay said. “This mobile app creates a direct link from the resident to City Hall in a simple, streamlined way.”

GETTING SETTLED IN GARLAND | THE GARLAND GUIDE 2019
Business of Healthcare: Next Generation Procedures By Glenn Robinson, Baylor Scott & White Medical Center - Hillcrest When it comes to technology that makes our lives better — from computers to cell phones — the trend has been smaller, faster, better. When it comes to next generation medical procedures being rolled out nationwide, that trend has largely been mirrored. Procedures that once took hours, now may take only minutes. And procedures that once involved long, unsightly incisions are now being conducted with tiny tools that may only require an incision the size of a razor nick. Perhaps nowhere have these advancements been more pronounced than in heart care and orthopedic medicine. Take, for example, procedures to repair or replace damaged valves in the heart. Ten years ago, these procedures often involved major invasive surgery, a week or more in the hospital and months of recovery. Today, many of the nation’s leading heart programs — including right here in Texas — offer solutions for certain valve problems that are so minimally invasive, qualified patients can leave the hospital in a little as one day and be fully recovered within a matter of weeks.
Similarly, major orthopedic procedures, particularly in the field of joint replacement, have come a long way since the turn of the century. Advances in pre-procedure imaging, artificial devices and operational technique have led to artificial hips and knees that feel as good as the original with a fraction of the recovery time. These, and many other, innovative procedures are creating better outcomes and giving more patients the opportunity to improve their quality of life. And that’s a trend that never goes out of style.

Bordered by two major highways, President George Bush Turnpike (190) and Lyndon B Johnson Freeway (635), residents have quick access to the entire region. In recent years, the NTTA completed the final phase of a project that extends the western PGBT terminus south to Interstate 20 through the city of Grand Prairie, forming a half loop around the city of Dallas. Now, the competitive advantage of Garland’s central location will be further enhanced as the PGBT Widening Project will include widening of the PGBT from north of Belt Line Road (Irving) to State Highway 78 to four lanes in each direction. Construction began in June 2017 to add a fourth lane from SH 78 to U.S. 75 and in July 2017 for DNT to I-35E. Completion of the entire project is anticipated in late 2019.
primarily centered on the distribution of cotton and onions, and telephone/telegraph services. Heavy rail and passenger rail lines continue to play an important role in Garland’s future development. The development of the Union Pacific Inland Port in Southern Dallas over the next 30 years promises to increase Class I rail traffic throughout the Union Pacific system, including shortline feeders such as the Dallas-GarlandNortheastern Railroad.
Public Transportation Options Garland has two light rail stations linking residents and employees with the region. Located in the heart of two of Garland’s largest employment centers, the Forest/Jupiter and Downtown Light Rail Stations serve more than 3,000 riders each weekday. The City continues to encourage higher intensity residential, retail and employment uses adjacent to the stations for its near and long-term economic growth. Adding further connectivity and convenience, DART’s Blue Line extension connects Downtown Garland with Downtown Rowlett, and the final Orange Line segment links the country’s longest light rail system to the world’s third-busiest airport at the DFW Airport Station. The North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) Mobility 2030 Plan also recommends study of the Kansas City Southern rail corridor north from Downtown Garland to Lake Lavon to accommodate future passenger rail needs (Wylie). This could ultimately give Garland three DART rail stations, further interweaving the city into the center of the Metroplex. Garland also features an extensive bus service which connects to the surrounding DFW Metroplex.
Heavy Rail Before the Great Depression, the Santa Fe (now Kansas City Southern) and MK&T Railroads (who later merged with Union Pacific) wrote the history of Garland’s business expansion,

the Arts in Garland Experience
Each year, more than 170,000 people visit the Granville Arts Center facilities to attend plays, concerts, meetings, seminars, Chamber of Commerce Luncheons, weddings, receptions, community events and performances of all kinds. Patty Granville, the Arts Center’s namesake, has been the director of the Center since its opening in 1982. Since then, Granville has worked with the City staff and members of the Garland Cultural Arts Commission to fulfill a mission to allocate time and funding to encourage the growth of the cultural arts in Garland.
The “Vision of the Arts” sculpture, installed on Sept. 7, 2018, will further increase the visibility of the arts. The 2.5-ton, 18 foot bronze masterpiece rests at the newly designed entry to the Granville Arts Center. Renowned Dallas artist Barvo was selected to create the piece, expressing a diverse community in celebration of dance, music, theatre and the visual arts.
The Granville Arts Center and Plaza Theatre have been key ingredients to the economic development of downtown and have proved to be a dynamic force in enhancing the quality of life for Garland citizens today and in the future.
