Braden Schmid

From the frozen tundra of North Dakota, Braden Schmid, an assistant to science teacher Heather Snookal during the school day, has landed a spot as Garfield’s after-school science tutor. Schmid played soccer all throughout college when he attended Gustavus Adolphus college in Saint Peter Minnesota, a place he considers his home.

Braden works mostly in Snookal’s room and likes to keep a “fun atmosphere” when kids are getting homework done. An afternoon of work with Schmid will definitely help your bio skills, but you’re also likely to get into a deep conversation with the Midwest native. One of the reasons Schmid took his job at Garfield is he “loves to work with kids,” and says he wants to get to know each Bulldog as a person, not just a science student. Schmid is volunteer placed at Garfield by AmeriCorps, a program that works to give all students an equal

Meat is murder...and apparently cancer

The World Health Organization released a statement Monday announcing that processed meat will be classified as “carcinogenic to humans.” Eating even small amounts of processed meat can increase your risk of cancer up to 18% according to researchers, with colon cancer found to be the most common form of cancer caused by processed meat. This study is giving smug vegans and vegetarians just one more thing to gloat about.

Elections are in the air

Over the past week four countries have held their head of state elections: Canada, Guatemala, Haiti, and Argentina. Canada elected the liberal party candidate, Justin Trudeau, son of Pierre Trudeau, beloved former Prime Minister. Trudeau takes over for the conservative three-term prime minister Stephen Harper. Guatemala elected former comedian Jimmy Morales to president over former First Lady Sandra Torres.

This election is coming on the heels of a corruption scandal that implicated over 14 government officials, including the president and vice president. Argentina’s election came down to a runoff between Daniel Scioli and Mauricio Macri as they both drew in 35% of the popular vote. Haiti’s election results are still uncertain and probably will be for some time as they have to tally the results from a contest between 54 presidential candidates... only a few more than the Republican Party.

The University of Mississippi has, in recent months, tried to take steps to remove itself from its strong Confederacy ties. They started with formally renouncing the nickname “Ole Miss,” a name slaves commonly called plantation owners’ wives. U of M wants to rename streets, facilities and buildings that were named after Confederate figures, and has removed the Mississippi flag from campus, as it features the Confederate flag.

Deadly Earthquake in Central Asia

A 7.5 magnitude earthquake was recorded near the Afghanistan-Pakistan border on Monday morning. Early reports have put the death toll at 229 and climbing. The earthquake’s epicenter was in more rural areas of these two countries but damage was still counted for in Kabul and Ghazni. Wais Ahmad Barmak, Afghan state minister for disaster management affairs, reports about 4,000 houses were either severely damaged or destroyed. Tremors were reported as far away as New Delhi, Islamabad and Kyrgyzstan.

Pumpkin Spice Takeover

The scourge of the fall season.

It’s the middle of autumn, which means it’s that special time of year when we voluntarily drink coffee that tastes like a pumpkin candle. I don’t mean it tastes like a candle smells. No, I mean it tastes like a candle tastes. For some reason, people across the country feel that they need to consume as many pumpkin flavored products as humanly possible during these 31 days. We go to the grocery store and look at the pumpkin cream cheese, pumpkin cereal, pumpkin marshmallows and pumpkin chips and think “I don’t know why, but I must eat that.” What’s ridiculous is that pumpkin spice foods become more dominant every year while most of them don’t contain real pumpkin. Kind of like how every kid in the PNW claims to be outdoorsy when really they just hiked

We let pumpkin spice invade the country because we like fall. It’s a cool season because you can stop thinking about how weird your legs look in shorts. But come on, almost anything that reminds us of fall is a better flavor than pumpkin spice. Personally, I would rather drink a wool sweater spice latte or return-of-my-favorite-T.V.-shows spice latte. I subject to pumpkin spice tyranny no longer! Your dog doesn’t need pumpkin spice flavored treats and you don’t need pumpkin spice shampoo either.

Another Year, Another Site Welcome to the fam, Schoology.

ver the course of the last three years, the Seattle School DIstrict has cycled through three different teacher-student communication websites in an attempt to provide students with direct access to classroom information. This year, the district has landed on Schoology.

SchoolFusion, the system used up until the 2014-5 school year, was discarded after a lawsuit called attention to the site’s inaccessibility for blind individuals. Fusion’s successor, EdLine, was implemented part way through the 2014-5 year as a temporary solution.

EdLine was only installed at three schools district-wide -- only schools with students limited by the site’s lack of ADA compliance. Carmen Rahm, Chief Information Officer for Seattle Public Schools, says “a decision was made to initially upgrade SchoolFusion at these three schools to EdLine for the school web pages.”

“It was determined during the planning

and testing that EdLine did not meet the ADA accessibility needs of our students and parents. For this reason, the district decided to replace SchoolFusion/EdLine with two products. These are SharpSchool for websites (district and school sites), and Schoology for classroom pages (now a full Learning Management System),” says Rahm.

Offering new components, Schoology offers more accessible class resources for both teachers and students, and is also compliant with accessibility rules for disabled students. New components such as a visual calendar with upcoming due dates, a two-way communication platform, class discussions, assignment feedback, and a notification center allow for easier access and a clear message of responsibility.

Arthur Charity, a history teacher here at Garfield, is a frequent user of the site and calls upon his expertise as a former computer programmer to lend perspective on the new software. “We live in the 21st cen-

tury and this is how things are done in the industry and it just makes things easier.

Frankly, the software we used in the last year was terrible. For what we need in the school, [Schoology] is great,” says Charity.

Though transitioning the district to a new student-teacher communication network destination can be a long process, Schoology is rapidly becoming more integrated into classrooms. “When I ask students to look at something on Schoology or print something many of them do. There will be a time when we use this more regularly in class and people will be using this all the time,” says Charity.

Despite the progress the school has made in becoming acclimated to the software, many teachers have not taken advantage of the most useful components of Schoology. “It’s hard to understand how stretched thin teachers are when it comes to time. One thing teachers need a little more time with is training to use sites like this. Myself, I’ve only used the superficial

elements,” says Charity.

On the other hand, so far the response to Schoology has been relatively positive and accepting. Rahm says, “It’s not surprising that so many teachers are enthusiastic about Schoology – it is a more modern and fully functional Learning Management System.”

Despite the seemingly positive reactions to Schoology, the question still stands: is it safe for students of Garfield to open their hearts and trust again? Or will Bulldogs feel the sting of loss once more as Schoology suffers the same gruesome fate as its predecessors, and be recycled next to Fusion and EdLine? The world may never know for sure until the strength of Schoology is tested against the grind of student acclimation, parent participation, as well as lurking district restraints.

The CORE of the Issue

CORE staffers strive to increase diversity on Cultural Relations.

ith the list of campers for the next Cultural Relations retreat published, CORE staffers are concerned with the lack of diversity of the group. CORE, a descendant of the Congress on Racial Equality, runs Cultural Relations trips to facilitate discussions between Garfield students about race, class, religion, and gender, among other topics. On the majority of trips, however, there are few people of color and more women than men. The upcoming trip seems to follow this same trend.

“This time there’s more white guys, so that’s a step in some direction,” says Leo Shannon, a senior on CORE staff. “But we have few people of color. I think it’s about ten.”

There are a total of fifty-eight participants on the upcoming retreat. Demographics of CORE staffers are similar.

Members of CORE say that the lack of diversity could affect the quality of the discussions, obstructing the mission of Cultural Relations retreats.

“We want to hear everyone’s voice, and if a large segment of Garfield is missing or underrepresented, then that’s an issue,” says Michael Greenstein, a two year member of the staff. “The danger of CORE, specifically in Seattle, is that you’re preaching to the choir with all the liberals, and then if you roll into that ini-

Greenstein states a different reason.

“I think sometimes Cultural Relations is viewed as this time where everyone just comes and cries, and I think that appeals to certain populations,” he says. “The goal of Cultural Relations is not just like a big white girl cry fest. That’s not what we’re trying to do. And that can be a part of it, sure, and that’s great, but we want everyone’s opinion.”

Michael Ybarra, another CORE staffer, cites a simpler reason for why people of color are less involved in the retreats.

“People can’t afford it. That has to be the biggest drawback,” he says.

To address this, CORE has scholarships available for those who cannot afford the trips, with a minimum price of thirty dollars.

CORE staffers continue to see these retreats as an invaluable part of the Garfield experience.

“Cultural Relations changed my life, and I think everyone should and deserves to experience this trip,” says Greenstein.

Health Scare

While even the most seasoned QVC host can’t sell candy as being healthy, a good scare won’t have you saying, “I see dead people!” Whether you’re a flight or fight person, fear can have positive effects on your brain. Chemicals including dopamine and endorphins give your mood a sudden boost and oxytocin -- otherwise known as the love hormone -is also produced. Oxytocin bonds people together, so sharing a scary experience is a great way to build relationships. With these benefits in mind, here are five ways to improve your health on the sweetest

Lock yourself in a closet or small/ dark space. Watch five episodes of American Horror Story in a row, any season.

The night before Halloween, turn up your car radio really loud, right before you turn the car off. The next morning will begin with a jump start.

Support systems in the college application process.

or the seniors of Garfield High School and across the country alike, this is the most feared part of their high school career. These few months are when seniors decide what their next step in life will be. Some take it in stride, others become hysterical, and a few get no sleep. Many seniors feel alone in the college application process, but the fact is there are many ways to get support, and many options for different levels of support. However, these support systems may come at a price, making certain types of application help more accessible for students from more families.

It seems that the stakes for getting into college rise every year with prices skyrocketing and acceptance rates falling.

According to The College Board, average tuition for all types of U.S. colleges rises about 5% each year. Additionally, most private universities have decreased acceptance rates by about 2% over the last 5 years.

Along with this added stress and competition, more students turn to additional support like college counselors, tutors for standardized testing preparation, and financial aid advisors.

“They catch little things I never would have. A lot of the time, it’s personal to me and my situation. People who didn’t know me would not see these things,” Nguyen says.

Free resources for college applications and preparation for college applications can be found within Garfield’s walls. Representatives from colleges all over the country come to present in the College and Career Center about their schools almost every day in the fall. Organizations like College Bound and CAN, or College Access Now, help students stay on track with applications, giving financial aid advice and showing them how to access the Common Application.

Paying for help isn’t the only way to have a great application, making some services accessible to all.

Whether seniors need the Common Application explained step-by-step, some supplements edited, or help with applying for scholarships, support is out there. We live in a day and age where the resources for this process are endless. They could be at Garfield, across town, or even in one’s own home.

Seattle City Council Election Make change this year.

By Aidan Miller This Seattle City Council election is now split into seven districts and two positions, a change from in years past. The districts were created as a result of a 2013 city proposed ballot measure. Its purpose was to replace the nine city wide council members with those who represented a neighborhood or region and would be more in-touch with each district’s specific needs and issues.

With the new district system, there will still be nine members as usual, but seven of them will be tied to district areas while the remaining two are at-large positions. This means the whole city is able to vote on their positions.

The districts were drawn up by the current city council and will be redrawn every decade to make sure the smallest

district’s population is within one percent of the largest district’s population.

The main issues in this election cycle are rent control and housing affordability, police reform and public transportation.

These election seats will hold for two years until in 2017 when all seats will be up for re-election and then the city council seats will be for four years from then on out. If the results from the primary hold the city council will have more females, people of color and be younger than the current city council.

Constructing History

Intelligence, integrity, and the architecture of Garfield.

E

ver wonder what goes into a building? For Garfield’s historic main structure, it’s more than just bricks and mortar.

Unlike many traditional schools, Garfield didn’t start out with one main building. Established in 1920, almost all of Garfield’s classes were held in outdoor portable classrooms, similar to large trailers scattered throughout RV Park.

“It was quite a race to get to your next class,” says Garfield alum Dick Hendricks.

Hendricks graduated in 1926, and was a sophomore when construction began.

“Before the main building was built, you’d have to run from one side of the [block] to another.”

Construction on the main building began in 1923, and was constructed primarily out of red brick and terracotta. Placed throughout the perimeter are also various white terracotta emblems, showcasing such subjects as botany, the trades, arts and crafts, industry, intelligence, and the sciences.

The west side entrance is constructed by famous Seattle architect Floyd Naramore, who also worked on various other Seattle schools built during the same time, such as Franklin High School, which was built a decade earlier. The namesake of the Seattle Art Museum’s annual student art show, Naramore constructed the entrance out of white terracotta. Terracotta itself had been around since imperial Chi-

na, often used for decorative ornaments, but was gaining popularity as an architectural feature in the east during the 1920s.

Garfield’s main building also channels ancient Greek building styles. The various arches surrounding many of Garfield’s entrances symbolize strength and wisdom, and are used to carry oneself between time and space. Similarly, throughout the school there are many ionic order-style columns. These columns, which can be traced back to ancient Athenian times, are modeled after the female body -- both soft and thin, yet sturdy.

While the the majority of classes remained in Garfield’s main building for another eighty years, it was apparent that more space was needed for the ever-growing student body. In 2006, Garfield was remodeled, transferring all current students to the Lincoln High School building in the neighborhood of Wallingford.

One of the many renovations included the attachment of adjacent parts of the third floor(formerly known as the annex) to the main building. Garfield also added on the Quincy Jones auditorium and Teen Life Center -- both constructed in modern steel and imitation brick.

Thomas V. Rengstorf Associates (TRA), the firm which oversaw Garfield’s renovation, found one of the biggest challenges to be the addition of the Quincy Jones building and the Teen Life Center. “[We] had to meet the challenge of

blending our design with this historic facade with a performing arts center and new gymnasium,” TRA is quoted saying on their website.

Renovations also provided new sustainability measures for Garfield. With additions including green roofs, natural ventilation, and use of natural lights, Garfield was looking to improve its eco friendliness, exceeding Washington State Sustainable Schools requirements.

The class of 2009 was the only one to attend Garfield both before and after the renovations, taking classes at Lincoln both sophomore and junior year.

“There were a bunch of rumors about what [construction workers] found during renovation,” says Garfield class of 2009 alumna Sophie Schofield-Selby, who cited a previously closed off door and secret staircase among the rumors. “It was almost like walking into a different school [when we returned].”

While rumors of the fourth floor swimming pool and underground coal mines have yet to be discovered, Garfield already has its fair share of history. Next time you’re taking a walk around the halls, take a look around and appreciate the near century of work behind the building.

What would teachers have in their candy bowls?

There’s one major drawback that always haunts us this time of year though; “Are we too old to dress up in costumes and knock on strangers’ doors, asking for candy?” If you put a sheet over your head, bent down a bit, and booed, no one would know your age, but it seems we’ve passed the age of trick-or-treating, without receiving any weird looks. The halls of Garfield might be a safer place to knock on doors demanding attention, but without any candy, what would the teachers give out?

Mark Lovre, LA Teacher: If you went trick-or-treating and knocked on Mr. Lovre’s door without candy, he might give out whichever cool pair of socks he was wearing that day, try to get you to read Moby Dick, or let you in on his guilty pleasure; Taylor Swift.

Paul Spangenburg, Science Teacher: If you went trick-or-treating and knocked on Spang’s door, for starters, he would be able to see you, thanks to his new haircut.

Without the possibility of a curtain of hair blocking his eyesight, Spang might give away some old headbands lying around, and because he has a lot of these too, possibly even a jar of fish heads.

Kristin Harris, Language Arts Teacher: If you went trick-or-treating and knocked on Ms. Harris’s door, she might tell you to come back dressed as Hamlet, or just give you a copy of the play. And if you have her as your LA teacher, you’ll be thankful for the extra pair of ear plugs.

You have a couple things to consider as you make your choice. Do you feel comfortable hanging out with him alone? If the answer is no, that’s probably your first major warning sign.

Also, be wary of your feelings; if it’s just casual, go for it! (He is hella cute, after all). If a real emotional connection has the potential, make sure you know exactly who he is before you dive in. He may surprise you, but he also may live up to your worst expectations.

I identify as gay, all my friends and family know me as being this way.

Yet, at a party the other night, I had sex with a girl, and I think I enjoyed it too. What do I do?

Human sexuality is immensely complicated, and it will be hard to define your sexuality with a monosyllabic, catchall phrase.

Acknowledge that sometimes “gay” will fall short. Or go with my move, and identify as queer, which implies a little more flexibility. If having one heterosexual experience got your gay card revoked, far fewer of us would have one. It could just be a one-off thing. Even if it is indicative of a larger pattern in your sexuality, so what? It’s okay to be a little straight sometimes, as long as it’s in moderation.

I don’t like Drake, like, at all. How do I tell my other guy friends (who’re mostly total fuccbois tbh)?

Sincerely, Pregnancy Free Since ‘03 KM: I got the chance to present your question to Nurse Miller, one of the knowledgeable professionals in the Teen Health Center. She spoke of the mistaken, but unfortunately prevalent, idea that having access to birth control raises rates of teen sex.

Nurse Miller also said that ideally you’d be able to talk with your parents about this issue, but using birth control while sexually active is more important than your parents knowing everything about your life. I agree; your health and wellbeing takes precedent over your relationship with your parents. Nurse Practitioner Karen Johnson sums it up nicely when she says, “It’s easier to tell your parents you’re taking birth control than it is to tell them you’re pregnant.”

Do you have any relaxation tips for a student undergoing college apps?

SB: You need to set up your perfect “application space.” First purchase a large, aesthetically pleasing desk. Set this desk in a room with the right feng shui, perhaps even the bathroom if you fear time wasted by toilet breaks. Go to a very hip store that sells overpriced candles with inspirational aromas and purchase 1000 for your desk. Perform a few tai chi stretches to align your chakras. Now it is time to begin a long night on the Common App website: light the candles, let your fingers sink into the keyboard, and write beautiful prose that will impress colleges... but not make you seem pretentious...but still impress them. Once the essays are complete, pour a warm bubble bath. Though this preparation may take more time than actually finishing your college apps, it is worth it. Oh, and remember to never leave your desk unattended, for the candles could burn down your home.

I think I have a crush on my teacher, and they’re younger (I’m sure they’re under 40). I just turned 18, so getting with them would be legally possible for sure. But like, should I do it?

We all have flaws—decide whether or not you need to change, but work to love yourself no matter what.

JR: It’s a hard lesson that high school teaches all too well: there will always be people who don’t like you. There also will be people who will not even be wrong to dislike you. That being said, others will behave judgmentally and talk you down for all the wrong reasons. Reflect on the things you’ve heard about yourself and decide whether or not they are true, whether or not they come from good source, and whether or not they are worth working on. And Kate is right: this should not blow up your self-esteem. Chances are, you are no worse than the average person. You are almost definitely doing better than whoever is regurgitating negative backtalk about you to you.

SB: In the immortal words of Taylor Swift, you gotta “shake it off!” Unfortunately, by high school, we still haven’t figured out how to stop trash talking our compadres. Focus on the positive, my friend. Hang out more with the friends who actually love you. The Dungeons of GHS

A

mid the oppressive normalcy that is high school, any promise of intrigue and mystery is welcome. Rumors of Garfield’s dungeons circulate every year, but the exact location of the entrance, and exactly what lies below, is never clear.

Just in time for Halloween, a team of writers descended into the unknown, risking our lives and sanity to uncover what haunts the deepest depths of Garfield.

In 2013, a single picture of the basement appeared in the yearbook with the caption “The underground tunnels are a littleknown aspect of Garfield. Located beneath the school, these passages are now used for storage but could very well be the dwelling place of Garfield’s very own ghost.”

To our knowledge, that was the last time any Garfield student saw the dungeons firsthand. Our journey began just outside of the custodians’ office, in the dark southeast corner of Garfield’s first

floor. A hallway connecting to the back of the school kitchen is filled with copiers, refrigerators, trash cans, and massage tables, all tagged as “surplus” and ready to be transported out of the building to SPS storage. We stood with one of our chaperones, math teacher Karen Gunn, and waited with anticipation for our guide, Garfield’s head custodian David Hodsdon.

“I visited a Holocaust concentration camp in Poland when I was in high school. From the pictures [of the dungeons], it looked like Auschwitz,” said Gunn. At that moment, Hodsdon appeared at the distant end of the hallway, broom and dustpan in hand. He led us through a locked metal door and into a warm, surprisingly well-lit stairwell.

The picture in the 2013 yearbook couldn’t be more different than what we encountered. Instead of tunnels and rats,

we came upon a huge bright room which Hodsdon explained contains Garfield’s two boilers and circulates air through the school’s science classes. The web of pipes and control panels contrasted the dominant feature in the room: two immense pale green inverted pyramids coming from the ceiling. These structures are the coal chutes which were decommissioned in the 1940s; a washing machine, sparkling white and sitting in a pool of brownish water, sits at the base of one of the chutes.

Behind one of the coal chutes and tucked away in a corner resides a desk with papers sprawled across it. An old computer chair sits empty near the table and a full bulletin board is nailed into the wall behind the work area. Hodsdon mentioned he was not the one occupying the space, even though it was evidently still in use. Who could be working there?

At the back corner behind the boilers, we descended one more narrow flight of stairs into what Hodsdon called the “sump room.” To us, the “killing room” seemed more appropriate. The ceilings and walls are plastered with decaying paint, and a mildewy aroma permeates the air. Old cardboard strips are scattered around the floor. The enclosed room is dimly lit, with a chain link fence running from floor to ceiling near the end of the hallway.

To the left, a stubborn door opens to reveal the pump room. Hodsdon tested both pumps and we jumped as a sound comparable to sticking a fork in a running blender filled the tiny room. “Now I won’t have to come down here for another six months,” says Hodsdon. Trips down to the lowest

point of the school aren’t at the top of the list of Hodsdon’s favorite custodial duties.

Beyond the ominous fence lies a pit full of water the size of a large bathtub. The depth of this pit, known as the sump, couldn’t be determined beneath the opaque liquid.

“When they were rebuilding Garfield, an electrician fell in the sump. I made them put up this chain link fence so no one else would fall in,” says Hodsdon. While standing at the edge near the chain link fence, it’s easy to imagine the large metal door slamming shut to signal the beginning of a slow and painful death for the victims stuck inside the room.

pect leads to the same destination that we accessed from the entrance near the custodians’ offices. Each time Mr. Hodsdon declined to comment. Examination of the architectural plans for the Garfield remodel don’t match up with what we can clearly see -the door isn’t in the plans.

The entrance may or may not lead into the depths of Garfield -- that’s for future generations of intrepid Garfield students to discover.

The Munchies

I

had heard legend and lore of the taco truck that resides on the holy ground of Grocery Outlet’s parking lot. I have even seen it as I pass by the truck while driving down the dangerous road of MLK. But, I finally made the voyage to Chely’s for this month’s Munchies review.

I was fired up and ready to set sail on my journey, fulfill my quest.

By fourth period, my stomach was rumbling and I was hungry for adventure. The 11:50 bell set me free, opened the gates, and I rushed out of the school, hearing the call of a good carne asada taco over the skyscraper-high note of the bell. The drive is short: the restaurant is centrally located for Bulldogs since it is positioned on Union and MLK. I drove over in a matter of minutes with some acquaintances, making good time for lunch.

Chely’s is hard to miss with its bright red exterior and standard line of customers. Situated beside the truck is a canopy with a few tables placed beneath it for casual eating. A few fellow journeymen sat with satisfaction at these benches, either eagerly awaiting their food or cheerfully taking a trip down to chow town. The smells of spices, sauces, and cooked meats wafted from out of the kitchen, gesturing my nostrils to join the line. I did.

My eyes flew over the hand-drawn menu stuck to the wall of the truck. The font was faded in areas, making it hard to make out the food that the black marker

described, but my 20/20 vision could handle it. The line crawled by slowly (each of my friends took an eternity to order their food). After a few lifetimes, it was finally my turn to order.

The menu is quite extensive, ranging from a sizeable, $4 kid’s burrito to full tamale meal with rice and beans for $12. The diverse price range in the menu is perfect for lunch-going students. You can buy as much food as your wallet or stomach can handle. Being a Mexican food aficionado, I know that the best way to judge a taco truck is by its namesake: the taco. I ordered four of the supple packages ($6).

spiciness from the least spicy option to the next level up (I usually can’t handle the heat, though, I start sweating). The

surrounding area of the truck was relatively clean and the atmosphere was slightly noisy given the fact that MLK creates a symphony of noise pollution. I sat under the canopy and joined the other journeymen, determined to devour my deliciousness with speed.

While I waited for my food, Seniors and fellow critics Atticus Pennylegion-Hurley and Enrique Drummond embarked on a tour of tastes while chomping on their kid’s burritos. “The first bite is the best bite of the burrito,” Atticus says as he carefully unwraps his burrito’s aluminum exterior, “A little too salty, but authentic.” The burrito’s appeared to be loosely wrapped, but in comparison of price to quality the burrito was a good bang for your buck. Enrique plentifully poured salsa (of both the green and the red variety) into his burrito, claiming that you need the right mix to obtain the desired taste.

I finally received my tacos and it was time to begin our expedition towards the homeland of Garfield. By this time I only had five minutes to get back to class.

I would not be enjoying my meal here; I would have to enjoy it during the pressure of my physics test that I had next period.

With a plate of tacos in hand, we hopped in the car and made it just in time for class.

turned and inspected the aromas coming from my perfume of Mexican food. It was time for me to dig in.

My first bite was slightly underwhelming. I have been spoiled by great taco trucks like El Asadero on Rainier and Rancho Bravo’s expertly seasoned meats.

Thus, the taco’s flavors did not sing on my tongue, but still performed up to standards for my taste buds. Presented with a smattering of green salsa and a bed of shredded lettuce in the middle, the tacos were aesthetically pleasing. The meat was underseasoned and the tacos were messily coated in grease, so it is important to have a napkin ready to combat slippery fingers.

Despite this, the taco was fulfilling for the six dollars I gave. Overall, due to its quick service, decent food, and affordability, I give Chely’s a total of three munches out of five.

Netflix and thrill Perfect movies to cuddle up with bae in the cold winter monthes.

As Oscar season approaches, many moviegoers discuss which of this year’s films may win best picture. None of the following movies are contenders. In fact, none of these movies will even be considered, and that isn’t because not a single one was released in the previous calendar year. It is because each is a low budget horror film, with little to no re-watch value. However, the first time seeing any of these movies is more than entertaining. Gore is off the charts, and goes past the line of what is considered unrealistic, into a whole other category. All four films are filled with one liners and cheesy villains, guaranteed to gain more laughs than screams. If going to the theatre, and shelling out upwards of $20 to see a good movie isn’t your thing, plop down on your couch, and get ready to hate yourself for enjoying these Best of the Worst Horror Flicks.

Sharknado (2013) Sharknado: Enough Said. The film’s catchphrase captures it well. Filled with hurricanes, chainsaws, and Great White Sharks, Sharknado is a whirlwind of lowbudget terror. Set in Los Angeles is hit by a massive hurricane. The storm drives many ocean creatures inland, and eventually causes the Pacific ocean to overflow, causing a “Sharknado”. Of course, chaos ensues. There is unnecessary violence and intense action sequences, such as entire sharks being cut in half from the inside, sharks falling from sky, and civilians are crushed and splattered by falling objects.

The best part? The special effects are atrocious and the film’s logic is completely skewed. It’s hilarious.

Thankskilling (2009) A classic holiday film, this tale of a humanoid turkey on a college town murder spree has everything a horror fan (or non-horror fan for that matter) could ask for. Foul language, talking turkeys wearing human faces, and as advertized by the movie’s poster, “Boobs in the first second”. With all three being components of mediocre cinema, Thankskilling is a great way to pass a boring weekend afternoon, unless of course you would rather see anything else.

Leprechaun 5: In the Hood & Leprechaun 6: Back to tha Hood (2000,2003) Perfect for Halloween, or Saint Paddy’s, whatever floats your boat, the Leprechaun series is one to be remembered. Without having to see any of the previous volumes, Jeff Ngyuen Leprechaun 5 and 6 are extremely enjoy-

able. Both take place in “Tha Hood” and consist of one weed smoking, freestyle rapping Leprechaun and his desire for murder. Even though the Leprechaun goes on a murderous rampage, it is hard for any viewer not to connect with him.

His rhymes are smooth, his style is off the charts, and all he really wants is what rightfully belongs to him: his treasure.

Both horror and a comedy, both of these Leprechaun flicks will have you cringing not only at the gore, but at the horrible, terrible one-liners.

Hiked Hemlines for Halloween

parkles and tutus galore, the girls costume section in your average Halloween shop is filled with short shiny skirts and low cut tops. From toddler to teen, girls are transformed into sexualized versions of princesses, movie characters, and, most shockingly, professionals.

Career-based Halloween costumes are a rising trend among all ages.

However, with the hiked hemlines and scanty scoop necks in the girls section, a negative image is cast upon women in occupations.

Discrimination of women in the workplace has been a hot topic for years. The history of inequality dates back centuries. While it is gradually improving, full equality for women has yet to be reached.

Female employees are still paid less than 80 percent of their male counterparts. Needless to say, this number is too low and women deserve better.

For those still trick or treating, dressing up is about look-

ing the part. When one scrolls through the website of Party City, a successful costume emporium, the outfits for young female professionals are far from realistic. Labeled as “sassy and sweet,” the girls cop costume leaves a lot to be desired as far as realism goes.

Sporting a tight fitting and outrageously short navy dress, the young “police officer” looks nothing of the sort.

With no real resemblance to their character, little girls wear their “cutified” outfits as girly dressup. Boys, on the other hand, have a variety of practical looking firefighters, policemen, and FBI agents to choose from.

Their costume descriptions include words like “look of authority” and “realistic”. There is something wrong with this picture.

On Party City, three out of the 45 costume options for young girls are career oriented, compared to 16 out of 53 for the boys. In fact, unlike the boys, the girls don’t even have a section titled “careers.” Here is where the problem begins.

The limited number of girls’ occupational costumes reiterates the inequalities towards working women as it implies a lack of importance and strength. According to the United States Department of Labor, women make up 47 percent of the general workforce. It is imperative that they be represented accurately.

The sexual images incorporated into occupational costumes are a major setback for the portrayal of females in careers. With a degrading character such as “sexy nurse,” the legitimacy of women in occupations diminishes further.

Already bombarded by ugly tradition and societal expectations, women in professions must often take massive efforts to gain respect for themselves. Typical girls Halloween costumes complicate things even further as they reflect little appreciation for women in careers. Dressing in a skimpy police skirt not only disrespects the women in that field, but also decreases desire for young ones to grow up and become independent working females. Women doctors, lawyers, and business owners are not properly depicted in the world of Halloween.

Despite the provocative advertisement from holiday shops, blame also lies in the hands of the

consumer. While Party City is indeed a source of injustice for women, their intentions are distinctly to make a profit and they will continue to produce what is selling the most.

Whether it be parents of young ones or teenage girls themselves, purchasing these risque outfits only propels the issue further.

Have some respect for the great strides t h a t women ha ve made to establish themselves in the workforce. Sexy occupational costumes may be eye catching, but they work against these efforts and detract from the value of female workers. Girls, wear what you please, but keep in mind the way that you are representing the tough and powerful women above you.

Gardening Club sparks change.

By Alex Ferry How many organic foods did you consume today? Now take that number and subtract any that were not grown in Washington. How many of the foods you ate today came from a different state, or even a different country? Now consider the costs and environmental repercussions of eating that food. Was is worth it? Creating awareness for eating locally is becoming increasingly important, and one of the ways the Garfield community plays a role in this recognition is through Gardening Club.

Gardening Club does a great job of getting students involved in environmentally friendly activities such as growing food.

“Growing locally is, first of all better for the economy, but also supports local farmers that are in our area. Shipping from other places uses a lot of fossil

fuels when transporting everything, and it’s kind of unnecessary in terms of packaging,” says senior Leah Lapierre, vice president of the club.

Not only does the group do a great job of showing environmental awareness at school, but it can translate to students’ lives at home as well.

“I think it’s a good way to start a conversation at home Gardening about how to be more [environmentally] sustainable. It’s important to know where our food comes from. It’s really amazing to see the whole production life cycle, like what it takes to actually grow your own food,” says Rachel Finley, advisor of Gardening Club and AP

The roots of the Gardening Club began about four years ago and are gradually evolving into a community of people that are looking to make a difference inside and out of Garfield.

“It used to be maybe ten people tops,

and now it’s probably thirty. Last year it was just indoor plants [but] now that we have this outdoor space, we can grow tons of food and it’s really cool,” says LaPierre.

The grass for Gardening Club is starting to look a lot greener. “[The] future for the club would be learning to grow and produce food for the Seattle community or for the Garfield community. [I want] to have students totally run the operation, where I’m just facilitating, [and] eventually it could turn into a whole class,” explains Finley.

Finley also advocates for students to participate in this life changing event by saying, “You’re going to get good food, good company, and you’re going to learn something that I think is a pretty fun activity. It might even change the way that you look at the world.”

Halloween Town

Seattle’s spookiest spots.

ith Halloween only a day away, most haunted houses already have lines around the block.

Once seeing the discouraging wait time, many are turning down the chance for a good scare.

However, Halloween isn’t the only day of the year to spook yourself: here are four of the most sinister spots in town you can visit all year-round.

Richard Hugo House - 1634 11th Avenue Capitol Hill’s Richard Hugo House is probably the least frightening on this list, yet its history will send chills down your spine.

According to their website, Hugo House describes itself as a “a place for writers”, housing a theatre, coffee house, and an art gallery, among other conference rooms and offices. The house itself, named after deceased Seattle poet Richard Hugo, is a 1902 Victorian, complete with paneled glass windows and an eerie green wash of color.

“In the basement there’s dolls with ripped off limbs that hang from the ceiling,” says Garfield sophomore Lily Baumgart, a frequent visitor of Hugo House. “There’s also baby coffin.”

The Richard Hugo House While some may speculate about the truth behind the dolls adorning the ceiling, the idea of coffins lying in the basement doesn’t seem too far-fetched. Before it housed writing workshops, the Hugo House was the BonneyWatson mortuary and funeral home. Now located two blocks from its former location on Broadway, BonneyWatson covers everything from cremation and cemetery services to pre funeral arrangements and grief counseling. Legend has it many ghosts, including Richard Hugo himself, still roam the House halls.

If that doesn’t seem scary enough, there have also been reports of sudden power outages and recordings of haunting EVP -- known also as electronic voice phenom-

ena, or unexplainable voice and sound -- taped throughout the building.

While there may be no concrete evidence of a supernatural presence in Hugo House, don’t be surprised if you get the chills next time you visit for an open mic.

“It’d be so cool if [Hugo House] was haunted,”says Baumgart. “Writer ghosts [could be] all around us.

Memorial Stadium - 401 5th Avenue N If you’ve ever been to a Garfield soccer or football home game, chances are you’ve seen the creepiness that lies inside Seattle Center’s Memorial Stadium.

“You go in [Memorial], and it’s cold and dark,” says Garfield junior Maya Kneip, adding, “[It’s] a cold cement structure.”

Built in 1946 by architect George Stoddard, the decrepit stadium with cement steps and echoey hallways looks more like something out of American Horror Story than an urban sports coliseum.

“The bathrooms are old and gross,” says junior Noelle Kim, who frequents the stadium as part of Garfield’s varsity girls soccer team. “Everything creaks.”

Now owned by Seattle Public Schools and home to many high school and professional sports league games, along with concerts and other Seattle Center events, the stadium is often filed less than halfway and poorly lighted, giving it an even eerier vibe than normal.

Adding to the creep factor, injury has also plagued the stadium since opening. From the unfortunate, concussion-inducing football hits to falling stadium lights at concerts, it’s no wonder some students wouldn’t want to step inside, especially after dark.

While the stadium is less haunted and more disturbing, one could even say the ghosts of sports past may walk the locker rooms of Memorial, revelling in their one time victories. “[Memorial Stadium] could be haunted,” says Kim. “Maybe in the depths of the locker rooms.”

But don’t let the creep factor steer you away from Memorial Stadium -- the noise of Garfield’s student section at sports games may just be enough to ward off any possible spirits. Just make sure you don’t take a trip down the hallways.

Georgetown Morgue - 5000 E Marginal Way If you’re looking for a real scare, look no further than South Seattle’s Georgetown Morgue. Built in 1928, the morgue is known for both its tragically frightening history and eerie presence in Seattle’s industrial neighborhood of Georgetown.

Similar to Richard Hugo House, the Morgue, which no longer serves crematorium purposes, was once home to the Broughton Brothers Funeral Services, a family owned cremation and mortuary. Thousands of bodies were cremated and transported to funerals a year, leaving many spirits dead inside the morgue’s walls.

It’s also home to one of the deadliest unsolved crime in Seattle’s history.

Dubbed by the Seattle Times as the “Seattle Crematorium Massacre”, on October 25, 1968, two suspects entered the building and bound all nine employees inside, forcing them into the crematorium stoves to be burned alive. There were no survivors nor witnesses, and the scene was left impeccably clean, leaving the Boughten Brothers with no employees and no choice but to close up shop.

The building has since been bought and remodeled into a meat packaging plant, but there have been reports of mysterious power outages and supernatural instances, such as doors locking themselves and noises coming from furnaces -- furnaces last used during the Massacre.

Every October, Seattle radio station KUBE 93FM hosts a haunted house inside the Morgue. The fifteen minute walkthrough holds every attraction from chainsaw-wheeling clowns to makeuped zombies crawling out of actual crematorium stoves.

“It’s really dark, and you’re walking down these long hallways” says junior Corinne Manley, who attended the house in 2013. “There was a hallway with strobe lights, and it didn’t feel like you were walking [...] you couldn’t see your feet.”

Even if you’re the not type to be easily scared, Manley says the house is something you should try at least once.

Her big advice for first-timers: don’t make the trek out without some friends by your side.

“It’s definitely an experience,” says Manley. “I wouldn’t go alone.”

The house changes its attractions every year, but it is certainly one event you don’t want to miss -- or do you?

Back To The Future

The not-so sudden reemergence of the 1990s.

E

veryone has seen that signature tweet. The one that reads “Retweet if you’re a nineties baby!!!!!” The 90’s: a golden era of music, style and bursting culture. Many of us so-called “nineties babies”, (babies born in the nineties) proudly wear this label, but what does it mean to be a nineties baby? Many of us don’t even remember being sentient in the 90’s. Being born at the end of this era, we were all slobbering little blobs having trouble toddling around, barely aware of our surroundings. Because of this disconnect, today’s culture wants to fulfill the nature of this label by trying to relive this era twenties years later. Talk about Back to the Future. The nineties holds a firm grasp of influence on today and that influence is in full swing.

Nineties rap is arguably the best timeperiod hip-hop music has ever seen. Nineties rap is its own subgenre of hip-hop culture. Much of today’s music is deeply rooted in the smooth flow and silky beats of New York to the upfront lyricism and choppy beats of the West Coast. You could ask many of the biggest rappers today and they would list similar East and West coast influences like Biggie Smalls and Tupac. Nineties rap still has a strong presence in today’s billboards; Wu-Tang Clan, Dr. Dre and De La Soul, just to name a few, are continuing to produce music that stays true to 90’s hip hop roots, while evolving to stay up to date with today’s

contemporary interests.

These 90’s artists are influenced and sampled by some of today’s most influential rappers i.e.

Joey Badass, Kendrick Lamar, and Logic. Although rap has grown to have more electronic elements that can be heard in the auto-tuned voice of new Kanye West tracks or in the instrumentals of Travis Scott, organic background sounds are still bumping in songs like “i”

by Kendrick. This is out of respect towards the heritage of rap culture: the 90’s was the cradle of creation for new style flows, streaming stories of material, and raunchy one liners from songs such as Yo Mama by Pharcyde that created a cool aura around rap.

However, flowing phrases and wordplay that was delicately picked is now accompanied by a new genre, Trap. “Trap is about funky ass basslines, selling dope,... getting money, wearing expensive brands” says Senior Christian Bossett. Unlike nineties influenced rap today, Trap music

has an entirely different feel. It’s pump up music. While artists such as J.Cole use their lyrics to get messages across, and are great to listen to alone, Trap music seems to have been created to describe a lifestyle. Says Senior Berkeley Patterson, “Trap music usually goes along with a party scene”. Maybe rap today isn’t worse, but it’s definitely different.

Nineties culture has also been reimagined, and/or reintroduced into the film and television of today. For example, the recent release of the NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton gives viewers a chance to look into a musical era that they may not have been able to experience due to age. Along with eras being revived through visual media, they are also being completely changed. MTV in the last two decades has done a total backflip. From two hour programs of videos on Yo MTV Raps and shows about hiphop and pop icons, Music Television has become a reality TV epicenter, filled with Teen Mom and Jersey Shore.

What used to be a channel filled with music has grown into the opposite.

Maybe twenty years from now people will start a 2010’s trend. Once again, Crocs will become fashionable, Drake will be blared on throwback stations, and people will take selfies or vines showing off their “old-fashioned” stylish items. Maybe even a Jay-Z or Kanye West biopic will break into the mainstream media. We’ll be right in twenty years, just wait.

Boys aren’t the only ones fantasizing.

e’s cute!”; “I like those colors!”; “They have a cool mascot!”

A serious female fantasy player has to tolerate these stereotypes daily. More recently, not only are the women of Garfield becoming more inclined to watch football, but they are also taking part in the previously male-dominated game of online leagues.

While only around 20% of fantasy football athletes are women, several women play a leading role in their various leagues. In fact, some may say they put in just as much dedication as the guys.

“I want to watch all the games, all day on Sunday, and there’s not enough games,” says Garfield teacher and fantasy player Elizabeth Young. “I set my alarm so I’m up in time to make coffee before the games start. And of course I’ve got fantasy open while I’m watching.”

“I watch football basically all day Sunday,” says senior Bailey Blume-Harris. Not only is Blume-Harris first in her division, but also the lone female fantasy athlete in her league.

The number of girls who play fantasy football has doubled since 2007, with nearly 8.3 million females playing this year alone.

“I used to be one of those girls that’s like, ‘Oh I don’t understand football, they just run at each other and fall down’,” says Ms. Young. “I thought that was really cute. But you know what’s cute? Knowing about football.”

To be a good fantasy player, competitors have to put in the time. There is a fine line between the amateur and advanced players, and what it really comes down to is the level of commitment and love for the game.

“I think girls could care about fantasy

football if they’re into sports, I don’t think it’s a question of whether or not you’re a girl or a guy. It’s the amount of caring about the game that will help give you an advantage,” says senior Brad Huffaker.

Women like Blume-Harris and Young didn’t receive their football mastery and respect for the game overnight; it took an ample amount of research and commitment. Ms. Young goes on to encourage other girls to do the same.

“Girls just don’t realize that when the boys are all talking about sports and it seems boring, it would be more interesting to just know what they’re talking about, instead of pretending like ‘Oh boys and sports’,” says Ms. Young.

If you’re a girl and tired of sitting on the sidelines of fantasy football, don’t be

intimidated- get in the game.

Huffaker explains how girls playing fantasy affects both himself and others.

“For a long time now, I’ve only been able to talk to guys about football and how my fantasy team is doing. But now that more girls are starting to join leagues, they can actually hold their own disputes. I think that’s really cool and more girls should keep getting involved.”

From the Window...To the Wall

The selection process behind Garfield’s Hall of Fame.

rom the beginning of the Quincy Jones Center, the walk from the gym to the football field used to be an empty, brick filled journey. Starting in 2013, Athletic Director Ed Haskins, principal Ted Howard, and Garfield sports fan Bill Kossen developed the Wall of Fame, bringing life and legends to the hall.

The Wall consists of individual pictures for numerous GHS athletic achievements.

These pictures stretch from the bottom of the main stairs all the way to the south entrance. Haskins, Howard, and Kosin work to find pictures, statistics, and stories to print on individual posters to commemorate each specific athlete.

The pictures encompass all Garfield sports, and connect stories to the names we so often hear about in the Garfield community. Haskins says, “There is a big disconnect from the old Garfield to the new in terms of the building, and we wanted to bring some of that back together.”

The Wall of Fame committee is open to story suggestions, and wants to continue to build the wall in an effort to promote Garfield’s tremendous athletic legacy.

Garfield cross country runner, track runner, and former Messenger sports editor Cameron Stanish is recognized on the

wall for his appearances at multiple state meets.

“I’m humbled to know I’m still recognized for the stuff I did. I hope other students can see it and know they can contribute to the school athletically too,” says Stanish.

Like Stanish, many current students and recent graduates are honored to find their name alongside so many famous Bulldogs.

“It feels very good to be up there with so many legends. People like Tony Wroten, Joyce Walker, and Brandon Roy,” says two time state champion, and WOF member Terrell Brown.

“I feel proud being on the wall, especially that I’m up there with Garfield’s greatest athletes,” says junior cross-country/track runner William Laird.

The pictures are not limited to just single athlete’s accomplishments. Many team pictures are included with descriptions of an entire season’s journey, bringing attention and excitement to a squad. “It motivates the team to be one of the best in Garfield history,” says Brown.

great for spreading the word out about a rising sports program at Garfield.

Stanish says, “Hopefully [my picture] encourages other people to join and support cross-country/track.”

The baseball team also acquired a picture for their playoff push last year. “It allows us to be recognized as a legitimate sports program in the school,” says former

baseball captain Jupiter Breuner.

The Wall has has covered almost every legend and champion in Garfield sports, but empty picture frames on the south side of the wall prove that some stories have yet to be displayed.

Lady Bullfrogs Make a Splash…

...but nobody is there to hear it.

By Claire Boudour Five hours of practice. Per week, that doesn’t sound like too much. But what about five hours every day? For highlevel swimmers, this intense workload has become the norm during the fall season, while many Garfield girls are competing for both their school and club teams.

Unlike sports such as football or basketball, swim meets don’t tend to fill the stands.

“There’s two extremes to [the number of fans]. There’s either none, or like seven,” says Garfield sophomore Ani Harriott.

Sure, the swim meets are in the daily announcements just like everything else, but the stands are just as empty at meets as they are at practice.

Swim meets might not draw a crowd like some other high school sports, but the sport certainly takes just as much training and dedication.

“I spend three hours a day [in the pool], six days a week. There’s travel time added onto that and then meets every two or three weeks that’ll take up the entire weekend. That’s just for my club team, if you add high school [swimming], there’s an extra few hours added onto that,” explains Garfield senior Jocelyn Crawford.

The time requirements aren’t the only thing that make swimming such a hard sport. “You can’t breathe! So it’s like you’re doing just as much of a workout, but you don’t get to breathe,” says Harriott.

The team was already psyched to start putting in work

this fall, and got even more excited when long-time assistant coach David Johnson was promoted and is now running the team. “I love [coach David]. He’s the bomb,” says Harriott, “He’s a lot more focused when it comes to teaching the swimmers and he can handle the administrative part of [the job].”

Unlike most other team sports, qualifications for swimming are entirely individual. Rather than making it to state by beating other teams and moving forward to the finals, swimmers have to meet time standards in order to compete. There are eleven different events that female swimmers compete in at the state meet, which range in length from 50 to 400 meters.

These Garfield gals are certainly fast, and they’re working hard to get even faster. With state getting closer by the minute, the Lady Bullfrogs need all the support they can get-- so stop by a meet!

Events to watch at state The Garfield women placed third at state last year, scoring 106 points. Swimmers made it to finals in several events, and first place was won for Garfield in both the 50 and the 100 meter freestyle. This year at state, the team is hoping to qualify in more events and make it to the finals in as many as possible.

50 free: Garfield has quite the reputation in this event, after now-senior Marley Cross finished first at last year’s state. Cross is ranked 4th in Washington state, and is setting up to do well in her last high school season. With a current reported time of 24.74, Cross is beating the qualifying time of the event by nearly four seconds.

200 freestyle relay: As with any relay, this event is broken up into sections competed by different athletes. Four swimmers each swim 50 meters, and although the official roster is yet to be decided, it’s sure to be a fast one. The reported time is almost fifteen seconds ahead of the time needed to qualify for state this year.

The Undefeated Volleydogs Garfield is spiking its way to state.

ssertive yells and the sound of volleyballs pounding the wooden floor emanate from the gym. Bright lights reflect off the shiny bleachers and the players’ gleaming sweat. The scoreboard loudly buzzes as it resets for the coming game, the noise resonating across the court.

Nervous girls clad in purple uniforms huddle up, chanting the famous True Dawgs cheer. Garfield’s undefeated volleyball team is working hard towards a single dream: the state championship. “We want to get to state. That is our ultimate goal,” says sophomore Tyra Krivonak.

Garfield was undefeated last year in the regular season, but was eliminated in the playoffs for state against Bellevue. This defeat has motivated the team, who wants to succeed where last year they lost. “I think it’s about redeeming ourselves from last year, because we lost in the game that would have allowed us to win league,” says Maya Kneip.

“We also have a lot of seniors on our team, so since this is their last year, we’re really focused on getting to state,” says freshman Ginny Barnes.

According to the team, there were several factors that contributed to the crushing loss in the playoffs. Junior Sarah Kwatinetz says, “It was definitely our fault. We could have played harder, we could have pushed those extra points. But we wanted it so bad, that we got super stressed out and put so much pressure on ourselves.”

The team also struggled to prepare for state last year, because they were unable to play many top-tier teams. This challenge, that Garfield faces this year as well, resulted in a less experienced defense, as the team wasn’t used to playing against more elite teams.

“In the Metro tournament, there are sixteen teams in three divisions, Sound, Valley, and Mountain. And in league [games], we play the Sound and Valley teams, but we don’t play the Mountain teams. And the Mountain teams are the strongest,” says Coach Jacob Putnam, “They’re mostly the private schools- Holy Names, Lakeside, Seattle Prep, Blanchet. They’re traditionally very strong volleyball schools.”

Garfield will be playing all the Metro league teams in playoffs, and is thus at a disadvantage against more experienced teams whom they haven’t played before.

“Defense is a main part we’re going to get burned on, because they haven’t gotten as much experience with the really good hitters we’re going to play against in the state tournament,” says Kwatinetz. “Usually we’re the underdogs; we’re not really supposed to beat the private schools,” she says.

But the team has been working to overcome these defensive challenges, and practicing against hard to prepare their defense for the opposition they will face in the playoffs. “We’ve been doing a lot more competitive stuff in practice, because our biggest competition is probably ourselves,” says junior player Lanai Hurd, “we’ve been scrimmaging in practice, and we’ve entered a lot of tournaments to play different teams that are better.”

Garfield’s offense has also been working hard, but more on strategy than experience. Their main tactic has been being more unpredictable, by frequently changing up plays to keep their opponents on their toes.

“Our offense is definitely more complicated than other teams,” says Coach Putnam, “we do a lot of switching around and moving with different tempo sets. If you become predictable in your block, the offense can easily set up a block.”

All of the team is working to support each other, and the group has very positive chemistry. Out of eleven players on the team, there are eight returners from last year, and three freshmen. “I think that out of my six years, this is the best team dynamic I’ve ever had. I’m really proud of our freshmen,” says Coach Putnam.“I think they’ve helped get us to a culture that I’ve wanted to have for a while. [A culture] that

works hard and really prepares well for all of our matches. One that doesn’t shy away from making mistakes and is aggressive,” Putnam adds.

“I think that this year is the first year that we’ve had really great team chemistry.

Everybody works really well together, and I wouldn’t ask for a different team,” says captain Tania Powell.

Captain Deahna Kraft agrees, saying, “I think [the freshmen additions] are fitting into the team really well. Especially because two of them are starters, it’s really important to feel comfortable on the court. To be a starter as a freshman is pretty awesome. Hopefully, they’re having a lot of fun.”

“Our team is fire,” says freshman Sierra Bradford, “we mesh really well together.

We know how each other play. If someone misses a ball, we all know that we need to cover that person. And they’d do the same for us.”

The Volleydogs have finished their regular season with an undefeated record of 13-0-0, including an amazing victory over their toughest rival, Roosevelt, in their final regular game on October 22nd. They are seeded as #1 in the league as they go into the Metro tournament, and just beat Cleveland High School in a tournament game last Monday.

Threading the Needle

The ultimate frisbee team reaches the state tournament.

mong the many Garfield fall sports teams making a push for state, the boys Ultimate Frisbee team has quietly battled their way to the state bracket. Five years ago, the frisbee team stood as an easy win for Seattle opponents. This year, they were able to make it to the quarterfinals of the state tournament before falling to powerhouse Northwest School last Monday.

The Bulldogs were definitely seen as underdogs by other team heading into the tournament, but close games with all of the state teams makes the Bulldogs a total sleeper pick to advance deep in the bracket.

“We lost to the top three teams on universe point, so we had a chance to win, but lost on the last point of the game,” says Cook.

Much of the team’s success this year can be attributed to improved roster depth and their ability to pass well. In a sport where being a ball hog is literally impossible, as players cannot run with the frisbee, teamwork is crucial to success.

“I think a separating factor for this team is definitely our chemistry. We have a lot of trust, and rely a lot on teamwork.

Last year and the years before we basically had a couple players that were all-stars, so they balled out, but the other players on the team were just along for the ride,” says

Keller. “Our team has a lot more depth in age. This is the most freshmen we have had on a varsity team since i’ve been at Garfield. I think we have three freshmen on varsity and they all deserved to be here, and all of them see playing time.”

A team with great chemistry and talent is nothing without a coach to lead them in the right direction. First year head coach, and former Bulldog frisbee captain, Homer Aalfs is leading the team into its first state appearance in over 4 years. Aalfs coached JV last year, but quickly gained enough coaching experience to relieve long time varsity frisbee head coach Rusty Brown. Aalfs played for multiple club frisbee teams while he attended Garfield, including the U19 open team that won nationals in 2012, so there is no doubt he understands how to be successful in high school ultimate.

“Homer is a lot better at getting across to the players what he wants them to do, and a lot more encouraging [than previous Garfield coaches],” says Cook.

There is no doubt the players are hearing what their coach is saying given the current season. While the championship dreams will have to be held back to til next year, the foundation built this year has many looking forward.

Surprises are plentiful in Mess Guess this season. With all five players within one win of each other, this competition will definitely be a hot topic for the following months to come. To nobody’s surprise, Aidin “I’m Sports Editor for a Reason” Montefisher leads the pack, as he was the only person to get three games right. While that’s disappointing to his standards, the rest of his writers tremble in fear.
