FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT

This report describes the progress and programs of the Museum as staff and visitors began the second year of inhabiting the enlarged Museum with its new public and working spaces, designed by Renzo Piano. It was the year they began to dream what the Museum could become for the public using these new spaces. A board Long-Range Planning Committee chaired by John Reed worked with the staff management and curatorial teams. Using knowledge gained from observing the public’s reactions to the new building, research from visitor studies, and learnings from the curatorial exhibitions and programs, we began to focus on creating a plan for the next five years. The Committee challenged the curatorial staff to think differently about programs and how they could be designed to engage the public in multidisciplinary engagements with art. Another major initiative emerging from the planning is a digital strategy for the Museum that seeks to apply digital approaches to interpretation, museum management, and visitor research. The potential to reach audiences before and after their visits can deepen their learning and experiences. Additionally, the Committee established that the Museum’s governance and financial structures are on solid footing. The work of the Committee culminated in the Board’s enthusiastic adoption of a new mission statement: To bring to life and preserve the Museum’s rich historic collection; to cultivate talent in the pursuit of knowledge and acts of creation in the arts and humanities; to support artists, landscape architects, musicians, scholars, and students; to engage local and global audiences in a sanctuary of beauty and the arts where deeply personal and communal adventures unfold. We were also happy to welcome Dr. Christina Nielsen, the new William and Lia Poorvu Curator of the Collection. Hailing from the Art Institute of Chicago, Dr. Nielsen offers both the depth of experience and the fresh perspective needed to curate this historic collection. In this report you will find the chronicles of the concerts, education programs, landscape initiatives, collection conservation, and scholarly exploration presented during the year. With all best wishes, Stephen W. Kidder Board President

FROM THE DIRECTOR

The curators and I were challenged by the Board to think aspirationally about new programs that would engage our public in multidisciplinary collaborations with art. Fresh thinking inspired new ideas. I am so heartened by the originality of the new projects that are being designed with audience participation in mind and will immerse our public in the collections and the art of our time. It was the year I was given a sabbatical by the trustees where I could rest my mind and write the book Daring by Design which tells the story of both Isabella Stewart Gardner building her Museum and our generation’s designing and building of the new wing. During this fruitful year, we were honored to have Sophie Calle return to the Museum for an exhibition of 13 objects called Last Seen which she created immediately following the tragic theft in 1990. In preparation for the exhibition, Sophie returned as an artist-in-residence and created a companion piece which she titled What do you See? Following the exhibition in our new Hostetter Gallery, the Museum was gifted the Last Seen body of work for our archives. We also welcomed renowned designer Carla Fernandez for our first-ever fashion exhibition, The Barefoot Designer, which provided hands-on experience for Museum visitors and was punctuated by former Merce Cunningham Company dancers who moved to music while adorned in Fernandez fabrics. Participants learned the ancient techniques of weaving, tassel making, and embroidery through numerous workshops led by artisans from Mexican communities. Opening the newly designed Monk’s Garden in September 2013 was a deep pleasure. It was one of my great experiences to work with Michael Van Valkenburgh in its design and discuss how it could be a meditative stroll garden; how it might inspire Proust; how it could echo the feel of the Museum galleries; how it could have year round interest and more. The Museum is alive with art, artists, and scholars waiting to assail visitors’ imaginations. Warmly, Anne Hawley Norma Jean Calderwood Director

THE COLLECTION

This year we saw the first historic exhibition in the Fenway Gallery, The Inscrutable Eye: Watercolors by John Singer Sargent in Isabella Stewart Gardner’s Collection, curated by Oliver Tostmann, William and Lia Poorvu Curator of the Collection and Anne-Marie Eze, Associate Curator of the Collection. Bringing together vivid watercolors and personal artifacts, the exhibition explored the lifelong friendship between Isabella Gardner and John Singer Sargent.

EXHIBITION

Friends for forty years, Gardner and Sargent shared an abiding passion for art. As a patron and avid collector of Sargent’s work since the 1880s, Gardner acquired forty-two of his artworks from every phase of his career – among them the legendary Portrait of Isabella Stewart Gardner and the monumental El Jaleo. After 1900, Sargent scaled back from the society portraiture that had won him fame and began painting watercolors for his own pleasure. The Inscrutable Eye: Watercolors by John Singer Sargent in Isabella Stewart Gardner’s Collection featured eight of these vibrant works of art. With their brilliant technique and fresh colors, the pictures reveal the astounding qualities of Sargent’s draftsmanship. In 1922, aged eighty-two and partially paralyzed by a stroke, Gardner entrusted Sargent to paint her final portrait, a watercolor. This remarkable exhibition of art and mementos is a testament to the friendship, mutual respect, and artistic scholarship that they shared.

GOOGLE ART PROJECT

EXHIBITIONS

Launched in March 2014, the Museum’s Google Art Project was the first in New England to feature Google’s innovative Street View inside the Museum, giving visitors the opportunity to “walk” through the galleries online. The Museum on Google Art attracted nearly 50,000 visitors in its first two weeks online, and grew the Museum’s social media audience by an astounding 26% during that period.

NEW CURATOR

In October 2013, we bid a fond farewell to curator Oliver Tostmann who left the Museum to become the Susan Morse Hilles Curator of European Art at the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, Connecticut. Six months later, we welcomed Dr. Christina Nielsen as the William and Lia Poorvu Curator of the Collection. Dr. Nielsen came from the Art Institute of Chicago, where she was the curator for exhibitions and installations of artistic media spanning more than a millennium; including Devotion and Splendor: Medieval Art at the Art Institute; The Silk Road and Beyond: Travel, Trade, and Transformation; and Caravaggio’s Supper at Emmaus. A young scholar with specialties in ancient and medieval art, Dr. Nielsen oversees the historic collection, program planning, and exhibitions and publications generated from new scholarship on the Museum’s holdings. “We honor Mrs. Gardner’s legacy by considering her collection as a springboard for new scholarship and research,” said Dr. Nielsen. “This gives us a real freedom to interpret the collection from different points of view, and inspires me, as Curator of the Collection, to push the limits of traditional scholarship by working across disciplines with my amazing colleagues in Contemporary Art, Landscape, and Music here at the Museum.”

CONSERVATION

When the Museum was created over a century ago, Isabella Stewart Gardner mandated that the collection be preserved and protected “for the education and enjoyment of the public forever.” In service of that mission, we diligently conserve the collection as well as conduct technical research on paintings and objects using state-of-the-art scientific instruments. To perform cross-section analysis of paint layers, we recently received funding for our new fluorescence microscope. In addition, we received a grant from the Samuel H. Kress Foundation to host a post-graduate fellow in Objects Conservation.

OBJECTS

In the summer of 2014, the Objects Conservation Department began surveying the condition of approximately eighty Asian lacquer objects in the collection. Several works were identified as needing immediate care and were treated, including a Japanese box from the Macknight Room and Chinese screens from the elevator halls. In preparation for the 2016 exhibition of Illuminated Manuscripts, the Objects Conservation Department has overseen the conservation treatment of many manuscripts and has begun extensive analysis of the materials and pigments used to create these works. The Objects Conservators also co-authored a poster on the Courtyard Laser Cleaning Project, which was presented in Sharjah, UAE at the tenth

international conference on Lasers in the Conservation of Artworks (to be published in 2015). Innovative laser techniques like these are able to gently loosen dirt without damaging the artwork’s surface. PAINTINGS AND PAPER

In preparation for the fall 2014 Donatello, Michelangelo, Cellini: Sculptor’s Drawings from Renaissance Italy, the Conservation Department performed technical analysis and imaging of Michelangelo’s Pietà drawing and Bandinelli’s Self Portrait. Through x-ray fluorescence analysis it was discovered that, early in the execution of the Pietà drawing, Michelangelo applied white chalk to the heads of Christ and one of the angels before laying in the black chalk lines. This was done to give those features a greater sense of form and also enhance the spatial effects of the drawing. In addition, the team researched the Circle of Bellini panel painting, Christ Carrying the Cross. The in-depth exploration included consulting a panel-painting expert from the Windsor Castle, Royal Trust, on a muchneeded structural treatment to be carried out in the coming year. To ensure the Museum stays current with the latest conservation techniques, our team also researched the use of an Erbium YAG laser for the cleaning of varnishes and old restorations from a painted canvas. TEXTILES

This year marks the completion of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) Conservation Support Grant for the treatment of four Tapestry Room tapestries to ensure their long-term preservation. Through cleaning, stabilizing the weave structure, and attaching new backing supports and hanging systems, the treatment strengthened the tapestries’ structural integrity, counteracted the effects of gravity, and improved their overall appearance. In consultation with Museum staff, the core treatment phases were performed at the Royal Manufactures De Wit in Belgium. To share the process with friends of the Museum, scholars, and the general public, the Conservation Department produced a documentary video detailing the process. Continuing our textile conservation efforts, the team researched and planned for the replacement and reproduction of seventeen Raphael room wall fabrics. In conjunction with the Carla Fernández exhibition – The Barefoot Designer: A Passion for Radical Design and Community – the textile lab also hosted tasselmaking workshops and in-gallery presentations about the Museum’s textile collection.

NEW EXHIBITIONS

Adam Pendleton: Untitled April – November 2013

Pendleton’s monumental art installation on the front of the Museum featured an early 20th century photographic portrait of an African man set against an 18th century European silk damask from the Museum’s collection. The portrait shows a bare-chested young man wearing a variety of ornaments and the warrior hairstyle of the Fang people. The portrait is combined with a luxurious fabric Pendleton had seen at the Museum. He says, “…it’s really just sort of asking, what happens when these two things come together? But it is not telling, it’s asking. The work expresses itself through questions.” Pendleton was the second artist invited to create site-specific work for the Museum’s façade.

October – June, Fridays and Saturdays 1pm–3pm; July – September, Thursdays 1pm–3pm Lee Mingwei: The Living Room project

Hamra Abbas’s art installation on the front of the Museum showed the spectacular silk and gold curtain (kiswa) that covers the door of the Kaaba in Mecca, Islam’s holiest and most venerated site. The artist created a version of this quintessential Islamic image for her adopted city of Boston. She sought to diffuse the prevailing tension between East and West by bringing visitors in contact with the unfamiliar through visual art. Abbas was the third artist invited to create site-specific work for the Museum’s façade. Sophie Calle: Last Seen

The fourteen photographic and textbased works in Last Seen consist of two distinct series. The first, created in 1991, titled Last Seen… is a series of photographs and texts created shortly after thirteen objects were stolen from the Museum in 1990. The second series, titled What Do You See?, includes new work which Calle made in 2012 at the Museum while revisiting the earlier project. Carla Fernández: The Barefoot Designer: A Passion for Radical Design and Community

This first-ever fashion exhibition at the Museum explored the development of a new language in visual design built by Fernández over two decades. She used a method called “the Square Root” based on the Mexican tradition of making clothing from squares and rectangles. In addition to displaying fashions, the exhibition also included dance with 14 performances by dancers Rashaun Mitchel and Silas Rieher, video, and an interactive display – bringing to life the notion of “clothing as canvas.”

SCHOOL AND TEACHER PROGRAMS

COMMUNITY PROGRAMS

Our School Partnership Program is grounded in the philosophy of working with a small number of schools, enabling us to provide a more personalized approach to curriculum planning and research initiatives. Rather than imparting large amounts of information, we use Visual Thinking Strategies to help students explore works of art in a way that allows them to connect with their previous experiences and knowledge. To that end, we have redesigned our middle and high school curriculum to increase the use of engaging special exhibitions such as Sophie Calle: Last Seen and Carla Fernández: The Barefoot Designer: A Passion for Radical Design and Community.

The Studio 75 programs: 5,213 attendees

Thanks to support from the Polly Thayer Starr Charitable Foundation, studio programs featured monthly appearances of Boston artists. This series has helped connect the Museum to Boston’s vibrant community of artists as well as give visitors the opportunity to learn from a diverse range of talented individuals. In response to the Boston Marathon bombings, artists Clara Wainwright and Eve Perkins brought Bostonians together at locations around the city – including the Museum – to create a personalized map of the Boston Marathon route. The completed fabric collage was displayed on the Museum’s Art Wall from August 8, 2013–September 2, 2013. To commemorate the first anniversary, Tibetan prayer flag workshops were held on four Sundays in March 2014. More than 6,500 individuals and families joined us for free Museum events including Neighborhood Nights, Highland Street Foundation Free Fun Friday, Frank Hatch Day, and Opening Our Doors Day. In addition, we introduced the EBT Program in December 2013, in time to be promoted in holiday announcements sent out to clients of the Massachusetts Department of Transitional Assistance. This program offers deeply discounted admission to individuals and families on food assistance and signals our commitment to making the Museum more accessible to local residents.

LANDSCAPE

The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum aspires to be a preeminent cultural venue for landscape, presenting its role in contemporary urbanism to audiences from design cultures, arts, and the environment through innovative, engaging experiences. In 2013-14, the first-ever exhibitions and installations sponsored by the Landscape Department presented the extensive possibilities of landscape forms and ideas to Museum visitors. The Composite Landscapes exhibition catalog carried this experience forward when it was published in December 2014.

THE LANDSCAPE LECTURES

During this annual lecture series, internationally renowned landscape architects present their recent work articulating landscape as a medium of design for the social, cultural, and ecological life. Because of tremendous enthusiasm for the series, all of the lectures were sold out in 2014. MAEDER-YORK FAMILY FELLOWSHIP IN LANDSCAPE STUDIES

The second Maeder-York Family Fellowship in Landscape Studies was awarded in February 2014 to Michael Ezban, a landscape designer, architect, and educator. He was in residence at the Museum from June 2014-August 2014 and has since published his research, Working Water.

REPORT FROM THE TREASURER

The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum’s short- and long-term financial health continues to be strong. Total net assets at the end of fiscal year 2014 were $269 million, an 11% increase from fiscal year 2013. This change is primarily a result of sustained progress on the capital campaign, a strong investment return on the endowment, as well as continued support from our members, visitors, and institutional partners. As financial conditions for cultural institutions have become increasingly challenging and complex, the Museum is grateful to the three Board committees that ably oversee its financial operations: Finance, chaired by Brian Chu; Investment, chaired by Ben Gomez; and Audit, chaired by John Bertucci. The following is a consolidated Statement of Financial Position and Statement of Activities. Complete audited financial statements are available from the Museum upon request.
