FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT

It is remarkable to think that eleven years have passed since the Board of Trustees and Museum Director Anne Hawley determined that the future of the Gardner Museum depended on successful expansion. That decision galvanized the Museum community and spurred the launch of a hugely ambitious capital campaign, and the opening of a stunning new wing designed by Pritzker Prize– winning architect Renzo Piano. The construction of the new building is an apt emblem of the Museum’s activity, a parallel to the expansive imagination, scholarship, and innovation that have made these last three years among the most vibrant in the Museum’s history.

The extraordinary staff of the Gardner have successfully envisioned and executed ever-broader understandings of the Museum’s five cornerstones: the historic collection, contemporary art, music, education, and landscape. Two recent symposia have helped us understand Isabella Gardner and her era and collection anew; emerging resident artists have challenged us to consider new perspectives with new associations of sound, image, movement, texture, and context; groundbreaking educational programs offered to partner schools have sparked the curiosity and fostered the confidence of thousands of students from throughout Boston; composers and performers in a range of genres have introduced new ideas about music-making as well as exciting musical language for expressing and interpreting the world around us; and plantings in the Courtyard have shown us the beauty and complexity of our modern curated landscapes.

The construction of the new building is an apt emblem of the Museum’s activity, a parallel to the expansive imagination, scholarship, and innovation that have made these last three years among the most vibrant in the Museum’s history.

The Gardner continues to honor the legacy of its founder — preserving her rich collection, fostering creativity, and immersing visitors in uniquely personal conversations with artworks, artists, and ideas. But honoring a legacy does not mean staying in the same place; indeed, the popularity and scope of the Museum’s programs have no doubt exceeded Isabella Stewart Gardner’s expectations.

The Gardner remains a bold institution, as committed to offering an inspiring, invigorating experience today as it was in 1903. That project — to awaken and to inspire through exhibitions and programs — is made possible by the Board of Trustees, our donors, and our members. I thank you for your invaluable support, and welcome you personally to explore the building and enjoy the programs that you have enabled.

FROM THE DIRECTOR

Here you will find reflections of the Museum’s contributions to civic life from 2009 to 2011. During these years we were deeply laboring on the new Renzo Piano–designed addition to the Museum while also continuing our public programs and caring for the collection. These years have been filled with fruitful thinking and an extraordinary commitment to securing the Museum’s future.

By the end of 2011 we saw the construction of the new wing completed, the Tapestry Room restored to its 1926 appearance, as well as lighting improvements throughout the galleries. With trustee and staff leadership the Museum’s largest capital campaign had reached $146 million toward the $180 million goal.

During all this we remained open to the public until the last two months of the year, continuing our public programs in education, landscape, contemporary art, music, and historic programming.

We thank the exceptional Museum staff for their commitment and you, our members, for your patience, which have been essential to the accomplishment of this historic feat.

The new 70,000-square-foot wing reaffirms and preserves the Museum’s prodigious legacy set by Isabella Stewart Gardner over 100 years ago, while communicating its mission to today’s visitors. Renzo Piano’s beautiful light-filled design elegantly addresses these two demands, at once honoring the Museum’s historical importance and asserting the enduring vibrancy of its mission. Moving our growing programs into purpose-built spaces in the new wing — concerts into the acoustically sublime Calderwood Hall, exhibitions into the soaring exhibition gallery, education and community programs into a dedicated and centrally located classroom studio — ensures their vitality. Entering the new wing our visitors witness the Museum at work in the greenhouses, classrooms, and concert hall while enjoying new and enriched amenities which relieve the Palace of unsustainable pressures. It is no coincidence that visitors will be able to see the Palace through north-facing glass walls in the new wing: the historic collection is still, and will always be, the inspiring focus of the Gardner experience.

And at the heart of the collection remains an invitation to a personal voyage of discovery: not to journey ever farther to find new possibilities, but to find new possibilities in familiar places. The Museum’s celebrated collection has been fertile territory for this kind of exploration. Exhibitions in 2009, 2010, and 2011 of Isabella Gardner’s Asian travel journals, Renaissance terracotta sculptures, and illuminated Venetian manuscripts introduced visitors to these rarely-seen treasures and added insight to the fascinating figure of Gardner herself. The collection is animated, and our own imaginations fired, by new scholarship and new perspectives.

Just as in Gardner’s day, working artists staying at the Museum continue to find inspiration in the collection, as well as space and time to work and dream. During the past three years, twenty-three Artists-in-Residence have studied in our archives, immersed themselves in the galleries, and enjoyed the abundance of the Courtyard. Several have returned to present projects to the public; they have energized the Museum and the community with the vigor of their ideas and the originality of their perspectives. Their work, in a range of media and from many traditions, has created new forms that have helped visitors understand our world in surprising ways.

The Museum has similarly reiterated Isabella Gardner’s commitment to music, naming A Far Cry the resident chamber orchestra and introducing, as part of our already sizzling Gardner After Hours, the Avant Gardner music series, which has

brought visionary 20th- and 21st-century compositions and composers to an eager audience. The bold programming is both intergenerational and international, showcasing pioneers of the 20th century and the young innovators of today.

Other programs have helped to share the Gardner’s powerful collection with new audiences. The Museum’s Community Partnership Program has invited teens from Dorchester, Roxbury, and Jamaica Plain to explore the Museum, and inspired them to create original art, while our School Vacation Weeks programming offered a range of ways for young visitors to interact with the Museum. And Neighborhood Nights, a free after-hours program, drew local families with live music, gallery hunts, and participatory art projects.

Our School Partnership Program, based on the groundbreaking Visual Thinking Strategies pedagogy, has engaged a growing number of students in the process of collaborative exploration, discovery, and expression. In 2008–2009, over 800 students from four schools participated in the program; in 2010–2011, the program worked with over 2,000 students.

Since opening in 1903, the Gardner Museum has been a source of enchantment, a convergence of the arts that has inspired and transformed visitors, immersing them in beauty and enlivening their senses.

In the last three years, the Museum’s gardeners cultivated the exquisite interior Courtyard, tending the garden daily and imagining new, artful horticultural combinations, while our Curator of Landscape challenged visitors to picture new vistas and consider new scholarship presented in the Landscape Visions lecture series.

The Museum is made up of people, as well as its great collections and architecture.

We are fortunate to welcome two new thinkers to our curatorial team: Oliver Tostmann joins us as the William and Lia Poorvu Curator of the Collection, and Charles Waldheim/Urban Agency is our new Consulting Curator of Landscape.

None of this would have been possible without the extraordinary generosity of our trustees and overseers; without their time, thoughtfulness, and generous financial gifts, none of these dreams would have been realized. They are the reason we are now over eighty percent toward our capital campaign goal of $180 million which has made this new building possible and will build endowment to support it and our operations. They are the enablers of this institution’s continuing public service in the arts and culture.

The nature of that service has not changed over the years. Since opening in 1903, the Gardner Museum has been a source of enchantment, a convergence of the arts that has inspired and transformed visitors, immersing them in beauty and enlivening their senses. It is a wonderful privilege — and a humbling responsibility — to rearticulate and reaffirm this service for generations to come.

Over the past three years, the curator and guest curators of the Gardner Museum’s expansive collection showcased Isabella Stewart Gardner’s collection of extravagant painted chests from Renaissance Italy, unpacked her travels throughout Asia, displayed her unique collection of terracotta sculpture of the Italian Renaissance, and showed, for the first time ever, her illuminated Venetian manuscripts. By spotlighting the overshadowed, researching the unfamiliar, and connecting the disparate, the Gardner’s curatorial staff continued to renew the collection and invite visitors on surprising voyages of discovery.

EXHIBITIONS

The Triumph of Marriage: Painted Cassoni of the Renaissance This exhibition,

displayed at the Gardner from October 16, 2008, through January 18, 2009, brought together cassoni from a number of different museums. The parade of 15th- and 16th-century marriage chests, richly painted with scenes celebrating the victory of harmony over discord, showcased the ingenuity of the artists and the sophistication and prosperity of the families that commissioned them. Co-curated

by Alan Chong and Cristelle Baskins (Tufts University), with Virginia Brilliant (Ringling Museum), the traveling exhibit was accompanied by a scholarly catalogue and was the subject of a symposium as well as other programs. The Triumph of Marriage was a collaboration with the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, in Sarasota, Florida, which showed the exhibition subsequently.

Journeys East: Isabella Stewart Gardner in Asia From February 21 through May

first time all six of the albums from her travels, as well as small pieces she collected on the way and acquisitions she made after her return, the exhibition provided a glimpse of late 19th-century Asian art, culture, and religious practice, mediated through Gardner’s recorded impressions. Conservation of these inimitable travel albums was generously funded by the Leon Levy Foundation. The exhibit was accompanied by a scholarly exhibition catalogue of the same name and enriched by a symposium, Inventing Asia: American Perceptions and Influences around 1900.

Modeling Devotion: Terracotta Sculpture of the Italian Renaissance This exhi-

bition, curated by Alan Chong and displayed from February 25 through May 23, 2010, showcased the Gardner’s rich collection of painted terracotta sculpture, including notable works by Giovanni de Fondulis and Matteo Civitali as well as several much later fakes and forgeries. Often overlooked by scholars in favor of sculptures carved in bronze or marble, terracotta sculpture has its own distinct emotive and expressive qualities. In addition to demonstrating a rarely-seen sculptural process, several of the pieces also received extraordinary, cutting-edge conservation treatment in preparation for the exhibition, with the generous support of the Sherman Fairchild Foundation, revealing important information about their construction and composition. As always, the exhibition also revealed more about Isabella Gardner herself; her retention of proven forgeries may suggest that she valued tangible expressions of beauty more than abstract notions of authenticity.

Illuminating the Serenissima: Books of the Republic of Venice Spotlighting

the Museum’s rare-book collection, this exhibition, shown from May 3 through June 19, 2011, gave visitors the unique privilege of viewing seven commissioni — elaborately written, illuminated, and bound books containing the contracts of Venetian noblemen elected as regional or city administrators. Stored in covered bookcases since Isabella Gardner’s day, the commissioni were in remarkable condition; only one required conservation treatment. The exhibition was curated

by Anne-Marie Eze, Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Curatorial Fellow at the Gardner, who shared her new scholarship on the rare books collection with the public in a series of engaging lectures titled Under the Covers @ After Hours.

In March, 2011, the Museum announced the selection of Oliver Tostmann as the new William and Lia Poorvu Curator of the Collection. Before joining the Gardner, he completed a prestigious three-year fellowship at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, d.c., where he had conducted research for various exhibition projects (Arcimboldo, 1526–1593: Nature and Fantasy and Venice: Canaletto and his Rivals) and conceived an exhibition based on a National Gallery painting by Giambattista Tiepolo. “I am honored by the responsibility of stewarding this unique and important collection, enlivening it with new research, and sharing it with an ever-broader audience,” says Tostmann. “I hope that returning visitors can always see something new, even in familiar works, and that new visitors always feel invited to explore.”

CONTEMPORARY ART

The Gardner’s renowned residency program draws individuals from different parts of the world and builds a growing collective of considered points of view. Since 2008, artists have come from seventeen countries and an equally diverse range of disciplines: from photography to dance, from sculpture to performance art. These residencies have perpetuated the legacy of the Museum as a public resource for scholarship and creativity in the tradition of Isabella Stewart Gardner’s salon on the Fenway. Artists use their time to research and reflect, but they also nourish the Museum, turning their unique perspectives to the collection, the archives, the building, and the world beyond the Museum in lectures, exhibitions, and conversations with the community.

EXHIBITIONS Luisa Rabbia: Travels with Isabella, Travel Scrapbooks 1883/2008 During

her residency at the Museum, Luisa Rabbia was mesmerized by photographs collected by Isabella Stewart Gardner while traveling in 1883 to China. In the 2008 exhibition Travels with Isabella, Travel Scrapbooks 1883/2008, Rabbia used these archival photographs to construct a video of an imaginary landscape, which she animated with her own drawings as well as other images and set to music. She merged two very personal journeys, Gardner’s and her own; the result was a fantastical narrative that was both historical and contemporary.

Su-Mei Tse: Floating Memories Su-Mei Tse’s Floating Memories, exhibited in

2009, merged sound, image and object into a single poetic form, encouraging viewers to reflect on the passing of time, distant memory, absence, and longing. The artist embedded a gold monochrome rug in an empty wooden frame, carved with the worn and faded pattern of the Italian silk damask that had originally covered the walls of the Museum’s Dutch Room. She paired this unique furnishing with a personal flashback — a video projection of an image, from her childhood, of an endlessly revolving vinyl record floating like a distant mirage. The viewer was seduced by the beauty of the object, but disconcerted and perturbed by a sense of nostalgia and disorientation evoked by the looping image.

Tse’s installation was in perfect sync with the Gardner Museum; here, particularly in those rooms that were violated in the 1990 art theft, time seems to have come to a standstill while the sense of yearning for the irretrievable past echoes in every empty frame.

Taro Shinoda: Lunar Reflections During his month-long residency in the spring

Joan Jonas: Reading Dante

of 2007, Taro Shinoda was inspired by the moonlight in the Courtyard to develop a new body of work — Lunar Reflection Transmission Technique. He constructed an astronomical telescope out of corrugated cardboard and attached a video camera to it; with this instrument he filmed the moon and cityscapes in different parts of the world. In 2009 he presented Lunar Reflections, an installation including film shots from Tokyo, Istanbul, Limerick, and Boston; a live audio feed from the running fountain in the Courtyard to the gallery; and an engawa, a Japanese viewing platform that traditionally separates domestic space from garden space. On the engawa, visitors could sit and meditate on their place in the universe while watching Shinoda’s extraordinary films of the moon and mysterious nightscapes. The gallery walls, which were lined with silver paper, reflected the twinkling city lights and the glow of the moon as it navigated across the floating screen.

Zhang Peili, Jane Farver, Karen Oen, and Pieranna Cavalchini: A Conversation

Danijel Zezelj: ONCE Danijel Zezelj created ONCE during Gardner After Hours on June 17, 2010; it was the final installation in the special exhibition gallery of the historic building. A dynamic act of live narration, using sound and image as the language of expression, ONCE was built on an interchange between music and painting, merging the rhythm and time of the music with the volume and space of the painting. Before an audience in the special exhibition gallery, Zezelj created a series of acrylic paintings on a single canvas, the images evolving, disappearing, and reemerging one on top of the other — a visual metamorphic sequence set to music performed by Jessica Lurie, Marika Hughes, and Todd Sickafoose. The entire process was photographed at twenty-second intervals by a fixed camera and the music digitally recorded. The photos were edited with excerpts of the music into a short animated movie, which was installed in the gallery alongside the finalized painting and shown for one week.

EMERGING ARTISTS, INNOVATIVE ARTS

Adam Pendleton returned to the Gardner in December 2010 to premiere a newly conceived work for the final Gardner After Hours program in the Tapestry Room.

Like much of his work, three scenes (variation one), appropriated and combined texts from a variety of sources. Pendleton layered a re-orchestrated interpretation of Stephen Merritt’s pop song “The Book of Love,” performed by Colin Killalea and a string quartet of Emily Deans, Marika Hughes, Yon Joo Lee, and Mazz Swift, over solos by mezzo-soprano Alicia Hall Moran and his own performance of an original text. Performed simultaneously, these three scenes merged into a refractive whole, each layer showing the one above and below it in new ways. “The performance was mesmerizing,” recalls Curator of Contemporary Art Pieranna Cavalchini. “Adam’s re-imagining and layering of texts — including a popular song about text — was adventurous, challenging, and emotionally powerful.”

Starting with the premise that each of us has a creative spark ready to be kindled, Gardner Museum education programs fire the imagination by offering fresh perspectives, invigorating proximity, and surprising juxtapositions. Our programs help visitors of all ages and backgrounds enjoy the Museum more by encouraging meaningful connections with art. Construction of the new wing and restoration of the Tapestry Room impinged on several of our programs in 2010–2011; we look forward to resuming our full programming in 2012.

Over 80,000 visitors took advantage of our Visitor Learning programs, some enjoying a concise orientation to the Museum at one of the volunteer-led introductory talks, or taking an interactive one-hour public tour led by a Museum Teacher — both offered free with admission. Larger groups continued to schedule personalized group tours and early-hours tours. Volunteers were also trained to enrich visitors’ experience of special exhibitions; these short talks helped contextualize exhibitions and encouraged lively dialogue about art and artists.

Public Programs Our public programs engendered new ways of experiencing art

and offered new perspectives on the Museum itself. After debuting in the fall of 2008, Gardner After Hours continued to bring music, artist conversations, and a celebratory spirit to Thursday evenings; from 2009 to 2011, nearly 20,000 visitors enjoyed the alchemical atmosphere of the Gardner at night — with over 8,000 attendees in 2009-2010, the last full year of After Hours events. And MusicKitchen @ the Gardner, another 2010 addition to our programs, featured Borromeo String Quartet violinist Nicholas Kitchen offering new perspectives on works by some of the world’s great composers, followed by a performance by the Borromeo String Quartet.

School and Teacher Programs Through our nationally recognized School Part-

nership Program we introduced students to the world of art, launching them on to lives of intellectual courage and exploration. We also trained teachers from partner schools to lead monthly art discussions in their classrooms, and organize workshops based around special exhibitions. In the past three years, participation among students has more than doubled, and teacher participation has increased considerably as well. In 2009 we were invited by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to offer a workshop on our interactive teaching approach to all Massachusetts teachers, resulting in a weeklong summer professional development seminar called Thinking Through Art. The foundation of our teaching philosophy is the pioneering Visual Thinking Strategies program, a research-based pedagogy for learners of all ages, skill levels, and backgrounds that uses conversations around works of art to foster critical thinking, intellectual risk-taking, and collaborative learning. During the past three years, the Gardner has introduced students and teachers from four partner schools to the treasures of the historic collection, exhibitions by Artists-in-Residence, and performances

by A Far Cry, the Museum’s resident chamber orchestra, and has challenged them to make their own meaning from works of art.

Community Programs During the last three years, the Gardner Museum has remained committed to fostering relationships with our neighbors through a lineup of free community-oriented programs. We have nurtured our unique relationship with neighborhood community organizations through our Community Partnerships, which annually bring local students to experience the Gardner and to make artwork for the culminating Community Creations exhibition.

When the Museum’s special exhibition gallery was repurposed in 2011, the exhibition was hosted offsite at AAMARP (the African American Masters Artist in Residency Program, an adjunct of the Department of African American Studies at Northeastern University).

In the summer months, Neighborhood Nights offered live music and themed gallery tours and hunts for families, as well as follow-up art projects. A Richard C. von Hess Summer Intern from the University for the Arts in Philadelphia is selected annually to help implement this program. The Gardner has also participated in the Fenway Alliance’s annual Opening Our Doors Day, an open house of discovery and creation. And our School Vacation Weeks, scheduled to coincide with Boston Public Schools’ February and April breaks, have proven extremely popular.

During the past three years, music at the Gardner Museum was both profuse and increasingly diverse, reflecting the lively conversations across generation and genre that energize performance and composition today. Our Sunday Concert Series brought established and emerging soloists and ensembles to the Gardner to reveal, through performance, new aspects of beloved classical compositions, while the Composer Portraits and new Avant Gardner series introduced a selection of today’s most innovative composers. Jazz at the Gardner explored the range of traditions and styles that give this distinctly American art form an ever more complex palette.

Sunday Concert Series The Sunday Concert Series spanned centuries, continents, and genres, each season glowing with sterling performances and riveting sonic combinations. Highlights from the 2008–2009 season included a celebration of Elliott Carter’s 100th birthday with the Laurel String Quartet and a musical tour of nuptial mores in Renaissance Italy with the Boston Camerata — a complement to the exhibition The Triumph of Marriage: Painted Cassoni of the Renaissance. The 2009–2010 season featured notable performances such as the Borromeo String Quartet’s two-concert survey of the complete string quartets of Béla Bartók, and a rare performance of Stockhausen’s Mantra for two pianos with percussion and electronics, one of the seminal compositions of the 20th century.

Among the prominent concerts from the 2010–2011 season were Finnish pianist Paavali Jumppanen’s four-part survey of Mozart’s complete piano sonatas; pianist Jeremy Denk’s inspired pairing of Ligeti’s Etudes and Bach’s Goldberg Variations; and the Boston debuts of several outstanding young artists including violinist Caroline Goulding, soprano Jeanine De Bique, and pianist Charlie Albright.

Jazz at the Gardner Our jazz concert series presented an alchemical mix of musi-

cal styles and legacies to attendees at Gardner After Hours, the monthly celebration of the Gardner’s magical late-night atmosphere. Programming for the series during the last three years included familiar jazz classics as well as genre-defying new works and sounds. Avant Gardner Since its debut in fall 2009, Avant Gardner, the Museum’s

new showcase for contemporary classical music, has challenged, surprised, and delighted audiences with innovative sounds and striking juxtapositions.

The first two seasons of Avant Gardner featured performances by the Callithumpian Consort, a local 13-member ensemble heralded as a “courageous new music band” by The Boston Globe. These remarkable seasons also featured three world premieres by some of today’s preeminent young composers as well as ear-opening pieces by musical pioneers Charles Ives, Cornelius Cardew, Toru Takemitsu, John Luther Adams, and more.

Resident Chamber Orchestra A Far Cry, a Jamaica Plain–based, self-conducted

string ensemble, was named the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum’s resident chamber orchestra in November of 2009. Recognized for its adventurous spirit — A Far Cry performs an extraordinarily diverse repertoire — and committed to education and community outreach, the ensemble is a perfect fit for the Museum’s multi-faceted mission. A Far Cry’s first performance at the Gardner Museum, part of the Artful Holidays at the Gardner event in December of 2009, was followed by a season of collaboration with the Museum’s School Partnership Program, where their lessons and performances left indelible impressions on young learners from Tobin School in Boston. A Far Cry presented four dynamic performances as part of the Museum’s 2010–2011 Sunday Concert Series, covering a wide swath of musical territory, from Purcell and Mozart to Pärt, Piazzolla, and Gabriela Lena Frank.

NEW MUSIC, NEW AUDIENCES “The Gardner is all about discovering new things,” says Curator of Music Scott Nickrenz. In that spirit of discovery, the Museum offered New Music Afternoons in June of 2009 and 2010, a week of informal, hour-long concerts of 20th- and 21stcentury classical works performed by participants in New England Conservatory’s Summer Institute for Contemporary Performance Practice. The concerts were free with admission to the Museum, and audiences were encouraged to drop in for as long as they liked. For Nickrenz, that accessibility was fundamental to the program. “By leaving the door open to visitors, we hoped they would explore, linger, and engage with this challenging and beautiful music in ways that they might not otherwise try.”

In the last three years, the Gardner Museum Landscape Department has established itself as an important center of scholarship and practice.

Under the leadership of Patrick Chassé, the Museum’s first Curator of Landscape from January 2005–2009, nine distinctive Courtyard displays were designed; today, the stunning chrysanthemum display, which debuted in autumn 2008, and the traditional hanging nasturtiums are recognized as incomparable events in the Boston area. Another change in the Courtyard includes a new palette of permanent plants based on historic images commissioned by Isabella Gardner. Chassé also created the popular Landscape Visions lectures, inviting expert speakers to explore landscape from a variety of informed perspectives and to engage audiences with new scholarship and fresh ideas. Chassé resigned from his position in 2009, and after an extensive search, the Museum named Charles Waldheim/Urban Agency Consulting Curator of Landscape in December of 2010.

Landscape Visions Lectures Since 2008, the Landscape Visions lectures have

brought noted speakers from a range of disciplines and backgrounds to offer audiences provocative new ways to understand landscape. Rooted in the Museum’s rich landscape tradition, but always innovative, the Gardner’s Landscape Visions lectures explored a common theme each season, tracing it through time and across geographies and cultures. In 2008–2009, the lecture series “Revisiting Paradise: Landscape Journeys from South Asia to the Mediterranean” examined the traditions and innovations of gardens and landscapes of the Islamic world. In 2009– 2010, “The Landscape of Eternity” explored landscapes and ideas that evoke our natural and symbolic responses to mortality, the afterlife, and memorialization,

Courtyard Displays The nine annual Courtyard displays at the Gardner reflect

the centrality of the Courtyard in the experience of the Museum as a single, immersive work of art. Blending shades, heights, textures, and colors, each Courtyard display is as carefully curated as any installation in the galleries, concentrating a dazzling variety of flowers, trees, and ferns in one small Courtyard. Of special note among the displays are the hanging nasturtiums and the chrysanthemum displays. Following a long tradition dating to Isabella Gardner’s day, the hanging nasturtiums display features fifteen- to twenty-foot-long orange nasturtiums hung from the Courtyard balconies. In the garden below, pale green azaleas, fragrant blue hyacinths, blue cineraria, ivory and cream daffodils, and Cymbidium orchids are placed against a background of green ferns, palms, tree ferns, and Norfolk pines. The chrysanthemum display, which premiered in autumn 2008, showcases a range of Japanese single-stem chrysanthemums (Ogiku), bred for their colorful, exuberant forms in the Gardner Museum’s greenhouses. The Museum’s collection of chrysanthemums has significantly expanded over the last three years with acquisitions of new and surprising forms and varieties grown in traditional and exotic styles.

NEW LEADERSHIP Named the Consulting Curator of Landscape in 2010, Charles Waldheim is a leading thinker, educator, and scholar whose research is focused on the intersection of landscape and contemporary urbanism, known as “landscape urbanism.” At the Gardner Museum, he hopes to engage new audiences with expanded programming that reveals the centrality and relevance of contemporary landscape to design culture, urbanism, and the arts today — an aspiration complemented by the opening of the new wing. “Landscape has always been central to the life of the Gardner,” says Waldheim. “The opening of the new wing and the development of broader programming in 2012 give us an opportunity to reaffirm this. I’m looking forward to challenging and inspiring the Museum’s diverse audiences with renewed programs that recognize, consider, and catalyze transformative innovations in contemporary landscape design and scholarship.”

CONSERVATION

THE YELLOW ROOM In the fall of 2009, the refurbishment of the Yellow Room was completed, as part of the Museum-wide lighting project the lighting was updated and the walls re-upholstered.

The walls had been last re-covered in 1974, with a dull cotton textile; for the current refurbishment, textile conservator Tess Fredette led the commissioning and installation of a bright yellow neo-classical patterned textile that is an exact reproduction of the original wall fabric. Samples of the original fabrics and trims located in the Museum’s archives were used to accurately reproduce the room’s color and texture.

The new fabric was hung, as Isabella Stewart Gardner herself had done, in various alignments, creating an evocative patchwork effect.

When it was established in 1934, the Conservation Department at the Gardner Museum was among the first in the nation. It remains a pioneer in the field, testing new methods of conservation treatment and technical analysis and generating bold and original research.

19th-Century Paintings The Conservation Department conducted in-depth

examination and technical analysis on thirteen late-19th-century paintings by John Singer Sargent, Anders Zorn, and Antonio Mancini. Supported by the Sherman Fairchild Foundation, technical research on the paintings, including x-radiography, infrared reflectography, and pigment and medium analysis, was directed by the Gardner’s Head of Conservation Gianfranco Pocobene and undertaken in collaboration with conservation scientists at the Harvard Art Museum’s Straus Center for Conservation and Technical Studies. Following the analysis, five paintings were conserved: three by Sargent (Yoho Falls, Astarte, and Charles Martin Loeffler), one by Zorn (The Morning Toilet), and one by Mancini (The Standard Bearer of the Harvest Festival). The conservation treatment of Yoho Falls enabled the Gardner to loan the painting to the Musée des Beaux Arts, Montreal, for a major landscape exhibition, Expanding Horizons. Technical analysis revealed notable findings including details on the fascinating use of grids by Mancini’s studio and the practice of reusing painted canvases by Sargent.

PORTR AIT OF JOSEPHINE GAUJELIN As part of the restoration of Yellow Room, one of its treasures, Edward Degas’ Portrait of Josephine Gaujelin, was meticulously treated in 2009 by Gianfranco Pocobene.

Examination of the paint surface under ultraviolet light illumination revealed an opaque, pale yellow fluorescence typical of an aged natural resin varnish. The darkened varnish and wax coatings were thinned and removed from the paint surface with cotton swabs dampened with mild solvents. After cleaning, the painting was varnished with a stable and reversible synthetic varnish and minor abrasions were retouched with conservationgrade pigments.

Composite Hanging Behind Piero della Francesca’s Hercules In one of her many juxtaposed installations, Isabella Stewart Gardner hung the formidable 15thcentury fresco of Hercules by Piero della Francesca over a hanging composed of green silk damask and two panels of needlepoint embroidered in a flame-stitch pattern. But after seventy-five years of exhibition, the original textiles had

deteriorated. In early 2010, a new composite hanging was installed. Over three years, textile conservator Tess Fredette and historic upholsterer Gisele Haven led a team that hand-embroidered new flame stitch panels, thus restoring the installation’s ensemble and Hercules’s heroic placement.

Terracotta Sculptures In 2010, Gardner Museum conservators completed detailed

study and conservation of three of the Museum’s terracotta sculptures. Funded by the Sherman Fairchild Foundation, and using a range of evaluation methods, such as x-radiography and scanning electron microscopy–energy dispersive spectroscopy, the work focused on analysis of paint and the elemental constituents of terracotta from different regions of Italy, providing new insights into the objects’ composition and condition. This research contributed to the 2010 exhibition Modeling Devotion: Terracotta Sculptures of the Italian Renaissance. In conjunction with the special exhibition, the Museum hosted a study day for curators, art historians, and conservators. Museum staff and guest speakers presented papers on the subject of polychrome terracotta sculpture and the group examined and discussed sculpture in the Gardner’s special exhibition and in the galleries at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Venetian Senator In 2009–2010, Gardner Museum objects conservator Jessica

Cholros led the cleaning of the 18th-century Venetian Senator, one of the Museum’s marble busts, which had become dull and sullied. Cholros determined that laser cleaning, a 40-year-old practice that uses lasers’ infrared wavelengths to agitate some particles while leaving others entirely unaffected, would be the best conservation method. By February of 2010, the bust was returned to its location: the senator had the floor again.

Namban Chest The mid-17th-century Japanese Namban chest, which Isabella

Stewart Gardner purchased in Venice, Italy, in 1906, was one of the first Titian Room pieces to be selected for conservation treatment. Over time, and with exposure to light, the decorative lacquer, a naturally durable polymer, had begun to deteriorate, developing water sensitivity, microscopic surface cracking, a loss of gloss, fading of colors, and detachment from the wood substrate in areas. The conservation treatment was undertaken by Jessica Chloros and supervised by Holly Salmon. The treatment included stabilizing the unstable lacquer and cleaning mother-of-pearl inlays and metal mounts.

PHILIP IV OF SPAIN Throughout 2010, Gianfranco Pocobene undertook a major restoration campaign of Philip IV of Spain (1628) by Diego Velázquez and Workshop, removing a darkened polyvinyl-acetate varnish coating and badly discolored restorations from the previous treatment, in 1948. Restoration included in-painting of losses and areas where earlier restorations proved difficult to remove and also the application of new varnish coating.

Conservators restored the painting’s frame, cleaning and in-painting its gilding. Technical analysis of the painting revealed important information about its creation, especially the presence of a red earth ground layer applied to the canvas prior to the execution of portrait, which dates the work to the 1620s and gives the painting its warm tonality.

RESTORING THE PALACE

The primary goal in the creation of a new wing was to preserve and protect the historic collection and building, including the restoration of the grand Tapestry Room to its original glory after many decades of use as a concert hall. While the new wing was being completed, conservators and curatorial staff were executing a series of ambitious projects in the historic building. Timed for completion along with the opening of the new wing, these painstaking restorations enrich the way visitors see, experience, and understand the Museum and its world class collection.

TAPESTRY ROOM RESTOR ATION Tapestry Room restoration and other projects associated with the new wing — including preservation work in the exterior Monks Garden, on the South façade of the historic Museum, and in other gallery areas — were funded through the Campaign for the Gardner, the Institute for Museum and Library Sciences (IMLS), and the Richard C. von Hess Foundation.

The Tapestry Room The Tapestry Room, long the home to concerts at the

Gardner, has been restored to its original function and grandeur. This multifaceted project was enabled by the construction of the new wing, which includes strategically conceived purpose-built spaces, like the 300-seat performance space, Calderwood Hall, to absorb some of the eclectic functions previously borne by the historic building. Isabella Gardner had the Tapestry Room built in 1914 by splitting what was then the high-ceilinged Music Hall into two levels — the Tapestry Room above, and the Spanish Cloister, East Cloister, and Chinese Loggia below — to display her two 16th-century tapestry cycles, which had once hung in the Barberini Palace in Rome. During her lifetime the room was also used to host musical performances, and in the early 1970s this purpose was formalized with the addition of a temporary stage, chairs, and other modern elements.

This ambitious project has restored both the function and the spirit of the room as it was first conceived. Under the leadership of Gardner Museum Head of Conservation Gianfranco Pocobene, curatorial and conservation staffs have assiduously restored this grand space, using photographs taken in 1915, 1916, and 1926 by T. E.

Marr and Son. The stage and chairs have been removed; the Mercer-tiled floors and the French medieval stone fireplace have been cleaned and stabilized; an arrangement of 19th-century chairs upholstered in Netherlandish painted leather was reinstalled around a 17th-century Dutch table in the center of the gallery; eighteen textile projects were completed — including conserving original textiles, re-upholstering furniture, and replacing missing, damaged, or inappropriate furnishing textiles; and new lighting has been installed, to enhance the room’s historic atmosphere and improve the visitor experience while reducing harmful light on this significant collection.

LIGHTING PROJECT The Gardner Museum lighting project was supported in part by Jane’s Trust; the Massachusetts Cultural Facilities Fund, a program of the state of Massachusetts, administered through a collaborative arrangement between MassDevelopment and the Massachusetts Cultural Council; Save America’s Treasures, a partnership between the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Park Service, Department of the Interior; the Richard C. von Hess Foundation; and several other generous individual donors.

Lighting Project Beginning in 2004, the Museum’s on-site lighting team, led by project manager and Associate Objects Conservator Holly Salmon and lighting designer Stephen Cannon-Brookes, worked on an extensive project to correct the uneven distribution of light in the galleries, which diminished the visitor experience and raised concerns among conservators about the harmful effects of visible light on the collection. Project leaders sought cutting-edge solutions that enhanced the Museum’s traditional strengths. For example, a new, two-layer window shade system was devised — the first layer a dark sunscreen allowing visitors to see outside, the second a linen shade to be lowered after closing to create virtual black-out conditions. Ambient lighting was improved by the installation of track lighting, rewired candelabras, pendant lights, and torchieres, all of which can be controlled and modulated in response to external conditions. The final stages of the project took place in the Courtyard, concluding the eight-year project.

CAMPAIGN FOR THE GARDNER

The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum is now poised at a transformative moment in its history. In January 2012, the Museum opened a new wing designed by Pritzker Prize–winning architect Renzo Piano, with purpose-built spaces for programming and community outreach.

These new spaces provide a new public and civic platform for the Gardner Museum’s innovative programs, and they add significant value to the way in which visitors experience the Museum and its collection.

The design of the new wing, which uses glass and natural light to provide visitors with a window into the Museum at work, embodies the transparency, openness, and universal access that are the goals of all public programs.

As part of the strategic planning process, the Board of Trustees established a requirement that the building project be paired with endowment-building in order to support the incremental cost of operations. In addition, the Board embraced the plan to include sufficient capitalization components within the campaign goal so as not to leave the Museum with a building that it could not operate, program, and maintain over the long-term.

The result of this careful planning is the current Campaign for the Gardner, with a total goal of $180 million, which was launched in 2007 and is expected to be completed by December 2013. The campaign will fund the full capital cost of the project ($114 million), plus new endowment ($46 million). The campaign goal also includes funds for gallery preservation work in the historic building, bridge support until the endowment is fully vested, and infrastructure and fundraising expenses for the seven-year campaign. As of December 2011, the campaign was at 81% of its goal, with $145.6 million raised.

Our sincerest thanks to the donors who so generously supported the Campaign for the Gardner through December 2011. The leadership of these early donors helped to construct a new wing designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop, strengthen the Museum’s endowment, and complete restoration work in the historic building.

As important, this essential support has enabled the Museum to preserve an outstanding collection, present vibrant programming, and continue in its mission as a cultural resource for a diverse and growing audience.

BU I LDI N G PROJ E C T TIME LI N E 1999–2000 Board of Trustees and Director Anne Hawley initiate a strategic planning process including identifying ways to reduce wear and tear on the collection.

2000–2002 Trustees determine that relocating some activities to a new wing is the best way to protect the historic Museum.

2001 Machado and Silvetti Associates and George H.B. Macomber Company are commissioned to assess space needs and write master space proposal.

2002 Architectural Selection Committee establishes criteria for architects and invites architectural firms to submit proposals.

With the new wing designed by Renzo Piano, visitors can experience the Museum, collection, and programs in a whole new way. The entrance has been relocated from the Fenway to Evans Way (facing a tree-filled park instead of a busy thoroughfare), and the use of glass and natural light in the new entrance and first floor affords visitors a view of the Museum at work as they enter next to plant-filled greenhouses and move through a glass connector to the historic building.

Special Exhibition Gallery The naturally-illuminated, 2,000-square-foot Special

Exhibition Gallery, three times larger than the previous gallery, will support both historic and contemporary exhibitions. The new gallery features a north-facing glass wall overlooking the historic building, a skylight with micro-louvers for manipulating natural light, and a movable translucent ceiling for varying spatial conditions and exhibition needs. An introductory gallery can be used for interpretive materials that will guide and engage visitors in the themes explored in special exhibitions.

Calderwood Hall Co-designed by acclaimed acoustician Yasuhisa Toyota, the three-tiered, white oak-paneled Calderwood Hall will allow audiences to hear the Museum’s wide-ranging musical performances in an unusual and intimate hall. The 300-seat flexible-use hall for concerts, lectures, and community gatherings has three balcony levels around a central stage, with front row seats for all.

Richard E. Floor Living Room Inspired by a project of the same name created for

the Gardner Museum in 2000 by Artist-in-Residence Lee Mingwei, the Living Room is a place of learning and inspiration for visitors. Intended for use either before or after a Museum visit, the space offers visitors a range of options: some

previously unseen process of preparing the iconic Courtyard displays visible to visitors, and includes a horticultural classroom to better integrate landscape into the Museum’s program offerings for visitors of all ages.

A ‘Topping Out’ ceremony celebrates the completion of the building’s steel framework, a major construction milestone.

Artist-in-Residence Apartments Two Artist-in-Residence apartments with work

spaces are situated above the greenhouse and connected, with a corridor, to the rest of the new wing, giving visiting artists and scholars not only continued access to the collection but also meaningful proximity to the daily life of the Museum.

Conservation Labs Since 1925, conservation has been a critical aspect of the

Museum’s operations. The fourth floor of the new wing features two state-of-theart conservation labs: one dedicated to work on textiles, the other for combined use by the paintings and objects conservators. The labs also have a dedicated area for photo-documentation and infra-red imaging, as well as laser cleaning. The new labs enable the Museum’s curatorial and conservation departments to expand the scope and depth of the conservation treatments and technical analyses that accompany special exhibitions.

First Floor and Gardens The glass-enclosed first floor enables an important

exchange between the inside and outside: visitors are invited to enter the Bekenstein Family Lobby and explore; once inside, guests maintain their connection with the landscaped grounds around the Museum and have new perspectives on the historic building.

Behind the lobby, The Lynch Foundation Garden offers opportunities to showcase innovative landscape design and special commissions. Centrally located on the first floor, a glass stairway transports visitors to the upper programming levels and provides vistas onto the Allison and William Achtmeyer Terrace and Garden and the historic building’s rear façade. The new wing connects seamlessly to the historic building through the John J. Egan, Jr. Glass Corridor, a clear passageway surrounded by a grove of trees and adjacent to the Darlene and Jerry Jordan Garden.

REPORT FROM THE TREASURER

The Museum’s long-term financial health continues to be strong. Total net assets at the end of fiscal year 2011 were $215.6 million, a 13% increase from fiscal year 2010 and a 40% increase from fiscal year 2009. This increase is primarily a result of continued support for the Museum’s new building project and endowment, as well as a 5% trailing three-year investment return. The new building project, which was completed on schedule and on budget, is funded through a combination of capital campaign gifts and a tax-exempt bond.

The Gardner Museum’s financial affairs are overseen by three Board committees: Investment, chaired by Bill Helman; Finance, chaired by Brian Chu; and Audit, chaired by John Bertucci.

While financial conditions for cultural institutions remain challenging, the Museum has achieved balanced budgets throughout this period due to generous support from donors as well as the concerted efforts of Museum staff to maintain cost efficiencies in programs and operations.
