Dear Friends & Fellow Beef Producers,
Gardiner Angus Ranch
Welcome to our 45th Gardiner Angus Ranch Spring Production Sale. Forty-five years ago, our family was preparing for the first sale. On sale day, we offered 50 bulls and only hoped to have enough cowmen in attendance to get the bulls sold. What started as a very stressful day at Gardiner Angus Ranch ended as one of the best days in our family’s history. The bulls averaged $1,447. The average for all Angus bull sales in 1980 was $1,636. In fact, it was five years before our bulls met or exceeded the breed average for bulls selling.
Fast forward to 2024, Gardiner Angus Ranch hosts four sales each year, with the first 2024 sale, the Early Bird Bull Sale, held January 22. In 2023, we sold 1,064 bulls in four sales. From 1980 to 1992, the first 12 years, we sold a TOTAL of 1,026 registered Angus bulls. The point is, it is always important to remember those early years and acknowledge what’s changed AND what hasn’t changed.
What’s changed is the footprint of Gardiner Angus Ranch. Henry Gardiner taught Greg and I the importance of reinvesting in ourselves and the ranch. We knew this strategy was necessary to enable the next generation the opportunity to come back.
What hasn’t changed is Henry’s breeding philosophy to use a total AI and ET program to breed females to only progeny-proven, high accuracy sires positive for all the traits of economic importance. With the advent of genomics, we have been able to accelerate our progress by using the best sires at a younger age. The unfathomable change continuing to occur today is the acceleration of genetic improvement across all traits because of this breeding decision “carved in stone” more than 60 years ago.
It is well documented Henry saw no change for nearly 20 years of diligent work to use the “best Angus bulls.” Why? Because he didn’t have the powerful selection tools necessary to accurately predict improvement. The tools we have available today, with laser-like accuracy, prove Henry’s philosophy and provided a clear direction that’s even more relevant today.
The foundation of the GAR breeding philosophy is multi-trait selection. Birth to harvest value in a value-based marketing system requires equal selection pressure be applied from calving ease, early growth, muscle, mature size, maternal function, and carcass quality. Our customers recognize these genetics provide an inherent risk management in their cattle, because of elite genetics, whether they sell at weaning or retain ownership and sell to U.S. Premium Beef.
Messaging across our industry today encourages cow-calf producers to make “maternal” OR “terminal” decisions. By labeling one versus the other, the inference is you must choose. In a value-based marketing system, this “choice” places cow-calf producers in an unnecessary compromise. The correct choice, in our opinion, is to select genetics that offer the most valuable cattle that can reproduce in your environment and produce the highest quality protein product. Our consumers consistently vote with their hard-earned money that high-quality beef is their overwhelming choice!
More importantly, cattle selected for lowly heritable, hard to define traits, often lose value as they move through the supply chain. Simply stated, at what point in the supply chain, and which owner, is relegated to market commodity cattle because of an unnecessary “choice” that influenced a breeding decision?
Since 2017, we have charted the results of GAR home-raised and cattle purchased from our customers, fed in many feedyards and sold through U.S. Premium Beef. In 2017, we charted the results of 2,654 head of steers and heifers. The cattle graded 98.25% Choice and 28.70% Prime and earned $127.51 per head. In 2023, we charted the results of 2,713 head. The cattle graded 99.15% Choice and 47.13% Prime and earned $184.06 per head premium. From 2017 to 2023, the percentage of Prime cattle increased 18.4%. For comparison, approximately 10% of all the cattle harvested in the U.S. graded Prime for the week of January 29, 2024.
The commercial herds whose results we recorded use Method Genetics EPDs and indexes to benchmark the calf crop and make decisions regarding replacements. Many A.I. or breed in a time restricted window. The heifers that breed within the window and meet the benchmark criteria, stay in the herd. Heifers that don’t conceive within the early window and fall below the criteria for MPI, QPI and ROI, but are bred, are sold as elite replacements. Heifers that don’t conceive enter the feedyard. In 2023, we fed 794 head of heifers and they graded 99.24% Choice and 56.34% Prime, earning $156.14 per head premium.
When we talk about progeny proven, we are referring to proving progeny to a carcass endpoint, collecting carcass data and submitting to AAA and Method Genetics databases. We recently received the final AAA Beef Improvement Record Carcass Summary on our 14-month-old, home-raised steers. This group of sire evaluation steers were sired by 14 different GAR AI sires. Comparing the actual carcass results of the steers to their sires offered no surprises. The steers performed just as the data of their sires predicted. Carcasses sired by GAR Transcendent averaged Prime with the fourth highest average hot carcass weights. The average carcass value of the Transcendent steers grading Prime earned $45/cwt, on a 1000-pound carcass.
That is $450. The steers grading Choice earned $28/cwt for the same week of harvest. It’s important to remember, because of our multi-trait selection discipline, many heifer mates to these steers are retained in the commercial herd to replicate the process and continue the acceleration of genetic improvement.
This sale will feature 444 registered bulls. There are 287 20-month-old bulls and 157 16- to 18-month-old bulls. Fifty percent of the bulls are sired by Home Town, Transcendent, Home Free and Fireball. This year, Lot 1, GAR Powercat, sired by E&B Wildcat, is a tremendous GAR Discovery son out of a GB Fireball 672 daughter. He will make an excellent choice to use on Home Town, Transcendent and Dual Threat daughters. Powercat is leased to Select Sires and the new buyer will be our partner in this lease.
We begin the female portion of the sale with 55 elite, 2022 donors that represent the accelerated progress we often speak about. It is exciting to offer these young females since we believe they are the best representation of unparalleled quality and accelerated genetics. Thirty, 3-N-1 lots, with heifer calves at side, and bred back to Powercat, Transcendent, B&B Preeminent, Fireproof and Apex will follow the donors. The bred cows category will feature 103 young cows bred to GAR high-use AI sires to calve this fall. The registered female auction will conclude with 176 bred heifers—126 will sell in three-head groups.
Commercial cow-calf producers have come to rely on GAR as a source for superior commercial Angus females in volume. Once again, we will offer approximately 279 Method Genetics tested, bred commercial heifers selling in minimum 10 head groups. Most of the heifers are AI bred to Fireproof, Transcendent and Home Town. The heifers will sell with individual Method Genetics EPDs and Indexes and represent the most elite population of birth to harvest genetic potential in the country.
Our presale program on Friday evening, April 5, will focus on sustainability. Famous management guru, Peter Drucker, once said, “If you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it.” We believe if we don’t seek the knowledge of experts to understand complicated issues like sustainability, climate change or carbon sequestration, we can’t possibly manage OR measure OR determine our role in addressing those problems.
Kirsten Nickles, Ph.D., Sustainability & Animal Care Scientist at Certified Angus Beef and Shannon Wharton, Wharton 3C Cattle, LLC, Syracuse, Kansas, will lead us in a conversation, as beef producers and stewards of the land, how sustainability impacts each of us, the tremendous progress being made, and our consumers’ expectations in the future. Kirsten directly interfaces with CAB partners, licensees, and producers to translate the science of sustainability related to ranching. Shannon, representing producers, has been a working member of the U.S. Roundtable for Sustainable Beef for the past several years. Shannon realized early on the importance of grassroots producers having a seat at the table discussing the complicated topic of sustainability, and the potential for policy implications resulting from lack of knowledge. She has worked to bridge the communication gap between producers and corporate stakeholders.
Throughout our history, regardless of the issue, we simply want to know the truth. When we want to know the truth about an issue, we seek the input of experts. In the upcoming catalogs, we will report on a project we are undertaking with the assistance of Nevil Speer, ag economist, and industry consultant. Nevil is a longtime friend whose professional advice we seek regularly. The focus will examine and compare value across all production sectors in a birth to harvest, value-based marketing system.
For decades, conventional research encourages cow-calf producers to focus on research and results originally conducted decades ago, before valuebased marketing became the driving influence to determine value based on quality. Today, with the reality of accelerated genetic data and heritability factors available to commercial cow-calf producers, is the research conducted using a traditional commodity model still relevant? We continue to appreciate longevity of all cows in the population. However, should this be valued the same as rolling generations of value added genetics in operations constantly culling the cow herd based on the EPDs and indexes of their genetically tested heifers; therefore, maintaining a younger, more productive cow herd, and marketing the older cows while they still have value and a productive life? We believe this contributes value to all cattlemen and makes beef better!
We know we don’t have the answers. Yet, we are as thirsty to learn as much as possible, just as Henry Gardiner was 70 years ago. We truly want to know, learn more, and make progress! We look forward to seeing you all as we continue to celebrate one of the most favorable marketing environments for beef we have seen in decades. Let’s keep Making Beef Better!
We are truly thankful for your business. Our collective curiosity to learn, share and improve makes beef better!

The Team…
Words can’t adequately describe our appreciation for the hard work and loyalty of our small but mighty staff. Each staff member accomplishes the work of multiple people, all in an effort to get the job done. Whether it’s planting, harvesting, working several thousand head of cattle multiple times a year, breeding, feeding, processing, calving, repairing equipment—there is NO job this crew can’t do. While we all appreciate our educations, life lessons of hard work, honesty, responsibility and integrity are learned outside the classroom.
Jeff Golden began with GAR as a student at K-State. Following graduation in 1984, Jeff began working full time. Jeff’s main responsibilities include managing herd health as well as overseeing calving of the two year old heifers, and freeze branding thousands of GAR cattle each year. Jeff is as good of cowboy as we know. His ability to see the condition of the cattle and the country is valuable to us. Jeff and his wife, Sheryl, have two children, Zane and Grace. Jeff and his family live just east of GAR on their own operation.
Scott Tune has been with GAR since June, 2002. Prior to joining the GAR team, Scott worked for Bar Six Dirt Construction. Scott oversees much of our farming during the summer. During the winter, Scott is an ace heat checker and assists in herd health at the GAR AI barn. Scott has delivered many GAR cattle all over the U.S. He does it proficiently and with a smile. Scott and his wife, Connie, live on the Gabbert Ranch at GAR.
Kurt Borgelt, native Nebraskan, moved to Clark County in 2004. Kurt has a degree in Animal Science from Univ. of Nebraska and is an all-around good hand in the GAR operation. Whether it’s heat detection, feed bunk management or herd heath, Kurt knows cattle! Kurt’s excellent feed bunk management has enabled GAR to consolidate bull development back on the ranch. Kurt and his wife, Aimee, have three children, Austin, Nicole and Landon, and reside just east of the GAR AI barn.
Eric Campbell came to GAR in August, 2004, with extensive feedlot and ranch experience. Eric assists with heat detecting and winter feeding at the AI barn. During the summer, Eric also shares much of the farming
responsibilities. Eric never met a job that was too big or too small and has a great attitude! Eric and his wife, Emilie, have two children, Mahala and Mykelti, and live on the Dunne Ranch.
Landon Borgelt grew up on Gardiner Angus Ranch and is the son of Kurt and Aimee Borgelt. Landon graduated from Ashland High School and attended Pratt Community College. Landon is keenly aware of the demands of our diverse ranching and farming operation. He assists in our minimum till farming operation and is responsible for much of the equipment maintenance. During fall calving, he assists in tattooing and data collection. We are grateful Landon decided to return to the Ashland community and Gardiner Angus Ranch.
Calen Bailey was a fall 2020 intern at GAR. As a full-time team member, Calen is someone we depend on to “do it all!” When Calen takes responsibility for any task, there is no detail left to chance. We appreciate Calen’s curiosity and determination to tackle any job, from farming to working cattle. Her demeanor is engaging and positive. Her willingness to problem solve is priceless.
C.J. Bonilla was raised in the Ashland community, graduated from Ashland High School and left Kansas to serve our country as a U.S. Marine. After his honorable discharge, C.J. returned to Clark County. C.J. is a valuable addition to the team, observing penned cattle for health and wellness and assisting in the day to day cattle operation.

When we began our structured internship program in 2012, the goal was to provide a hands-on, immersive experience to university students planning to become professionals in agriculture.
After 12 years, we have hosted 67 students from across America, Great Britain and Australia. We are so very grateful these young, bright and curious students chose Gardiner Angus Ranch to add to their educational experiences.
Upon arrival, interns are immediately integrated into the day-to-day operations. Depending upon the season, they may be challenged with their first ultrasound experience or mounting up to join the GAR team in rounding up and
TODD PAISLEY is a senior at the University of Wyoming majoring in Animal Science. He, like most undergraduate students with a 4.0 GPA, entered college with a plan. Raised on his family’s commercial cow-calf operation, Todd has been a good student gaining knowledge and skills to make contributions throughout his life.
Once on campus at the Univ. of Wyoming, Todd immersed himself in academics. He’s now focused on a career in beef cattle reproduction and veterinary medicine, specializing in embryology.
MORGAN FILHART: At 13 years of age, Morgan became a certified A.I. technician at the Graham
moving large groups of cattle several miles. From pregnancy and semen testing, embryo transfer days or working calves, the intern cohorts quickly learn the importance of time management and “keep the cattle coming!”
The interns travel to other beef cattle operations and learn more about the differences in management and business models. They gain real-world experiences as the ranch prepares for production sales four times a year.
At the end of their intern experience, we consider these students as valuable members of the larger Gardiner Angus Ranch family.
School. Her experience fueled more questions and a curiosity to better understand artificial insemination and embryo transfer.
Morgan was raised on her family’s commercial Sim-Angus cow-calf operation. She has experienced the responsibilities of making mating decisions and ultimately following the steers through harvest. At MSU, Morgan has focused on nutrition and feedlot management.
CHLOE SIMS career plans have been crystal clear for quite sometime. One of her lifetime mentors is the veterinarian in her rural community. She spent most of her high school and early college years working in the local vet clinic.
Her four years at MU have been spent preparing for vet school. Chloe’s academic endeavors have furthered her knowledge of reproductive technologies, artificial insemination, estrous synchronization and animal handling
LILLY CAST expressed an interest in better understanding beef cattle production through the lens of sustainability. Her early experience in multi-species will be an asset as she continues to define her career path.
She expressed an interest in gaining experience in a large scale, diversified ranching operation to better understand the importance of sustainable practices.
Meet the 2024-2025 Henry C. Gardiner Elite Scholars
Henry C. Gardiner scholarships have been awarded to elite undergraduates since 2012. This year, 33 applicants competed for six scholarships. The applicants represent diverse interests throughout animal science and industry, production agriculture and the beef industry.
The applicants are academically elite undergraduates enrolled at K-State planning to continue careers in agriculture. In addition to written applications, applicants compete in an intense, in-person interview with a panel of K-State faculty and industry leaders. Academic excellence, work ethic, community service, written and verbal communication skills and future goals are considered.
The 2024-2025 Henry C. Gardiner Scholars are Lauren Thompson, Woodville, Wisconsin; Grace Fike, Westmoreland, Kansas; Preston Dunn, Saint John, Kansas; August Hulse, Culver, Kansas;
Katrina Turner, Derby, Kansas; and Kiley Andersen, Sebastopol, California.
LAUREN THOMPSON
Lauren Thompson will graduate this spring with a bachelor’s degree in animal science and industry with a secondary major in global food systems leadership. Lauren was on the meats judging team. She was also a member of the Governor’s Blue Ribbon Commission on Rural Prosperity in her home state of Wisconsin. This elite task force was challenged to identify aspects in rural communities that decrease prosperity. Thompson plans to continue her academic endeavors in graduate school, ultimately obtaining her doctorate.
Lauren’s communication skills and level of understanding of complicated, rural social and policy issues is exceptional. Her passion for making a difference has been a driving force in her pursuit to gain leadership skills,
“I’ve learned that my voice can make a difference. It has been ingrained in me from a young age, that when you give of yourself the benefits come back to you many times over.”
GRACE FIKE
Grace Fike is a junior majoring in animal science, production management. Grace was a member of the highly successful 2022-2023 K-State meats judging team. She is quick to recognize the value of being raised in agriculture. Fike also acknowledges the importance of coming to K-State as a young freshman and realizing the vast possibilities available throughout agriculture. Grace so succinctly commented, “I believe there is urgency in sharing the knowledge I have learned thus far with others. My experiences in my undergraduate career have prepared me well for a post-graduate career: to enter graduate school or enter the workforce to promote the beef cattle industry through marketing and communication.”
PRESTON DUNN
Preston Dunn is a junior pursuing a double major in animal science and ag economics. Preston has accrued impressive experience through his summer internship with Co-Bank Farm Credit and his on-campus, extracurricular commitments. He will return to Co-Bank Farm Credit this summer to
The 2024-2025 Henry C. Gardiner Scholars were awarded to (left to right): Katrina Turner, Derby, Kansas; Lauren Thompson, Woodville, Wisconsin; Preston Dunn, Saint John, Kansas; August Hulse, Culver, Kansas; Grace Fike, Westmoreland, Kansas; Kiley Andersen, Sebastopol, California; and Mark Gardiner.
gain further experience in ag finance.
Preston was raised on his family’s 4th generation, diversified livestock and crop operation. After graduation, Preston plans to seek a career in ag finance and ultimately return to join his family’s operation, focused on raising valueadded beef cattle for registered and commercial beef producers. Preston made the following salient comment on his application, “I enjoy learning about how economics fit into the beef industry and the opportunities we have to maximize efficiencies while reducing the cost of production.”
AUGUST HULSE
August Hulse is a senior with a dual major in animal science and ag economics. While August’s future career plans are undecided, he recognizes the abundant options available after obtaining his degree.
Hulse has gained valuable experience as a member of the K-State Meats Judging Team. He continues to work in the on-campus meats lab gaining hands on experience in meat fabrication, packaging and retail sales. When describing his experience on the K-State judging team, he stated, “I was fortunate to compete at the National 4-H contest, earning 2nd high individual in high school. But, it was when I started on the meats judging team at K-State that I became more fully aware of the meats side of the beef industry. Being in a plant with 10,000
hanging carcasses shows you the scale of the beef industry and the importance of the decisions made on the farm to the packer and finally, to the consumer.”
Hulse was raised on his family’s commercial cow-calf operation. He plans to eventually return to the family operation.
KATRINA TURNER
Katrina Turner, by her own admission, brings an urban perspective to animal science. Katrina’s unquenchable thirst for learning and academics brought her to recognize the average consumer doesn’t have an understanding of how food gets to their table.
A statement from Katrina’s scholarship application speaks to the heart of the Henry C. Gardiner scholarship,
“I grew up in a very urban, suburban area where everyone worked in aerospace and nobody understood how food arrived at the grocery store. My grandfather, Dr. Del Allen, arranged a personal interview with Dr. Temple Grandin for me. After a two-hour conversation, I became interested in her work with animal handling rather than her autism. From there, my passion in animal agriculture began.”
Katrina plans to continue post graduation and ultimately obtain a doctorate degree in meat science, with a focus on research, packaging, meat quality and food safety.
KILEY ANDERSEN
Kiley Andersen is a junior majoring in Agribusiness Management, with double minors in agriculture sales and communication.
Kiley’s academic endeavors are preparing her for a career path in livestock extension and teaching. Her academics have been supported by diverse internships in veterinary clinic support, equine, sheep breeding, and show supply retail sales.
Reflecting on her K-State experience, Kiley remarked,
“In the past three years at K-State, I have learned more about myself than I could have imagined, made new friendships and professional relationships that will last a lifetime, and found an inspiring career path that fits with all my aspirations into one.”
The Henry C. Gardiner Scholarship is made possible through the generous contributions of Gardiner customers, friends and family continuing the legacy of Henry Gardiner. To date, 54 undergraduate students have received $250,500 in scholarships.
Students classified as a rising-junior, junior or senior, either enrolled in or planning to enroll at Kansas State University with a major in Animal Science and Industry or closely related field may apply. Scholarships are awarded annually to students meeting rigorous criteria and exhibiting a commitment to focus on improving the beef industry and food animal production.

REVENUE SHARING AND SEMEN INTEREST
You will notice we are selling revenue sharing and semen interests on all bulls. This means the bull is totally in your control in how you want to handle him and you get 100% of the salvage value of the bull. Simply, we are reserving the right to a share of semen sales revenue from the bull if, at some time in the future, semen sales become a possibility. If you sell the bull to another breeder, Gardiner Angus Ranch retains the semen interest.
It is unlikely that large amounts of semen will be sold from many bulls. However, bulls are often “discovered” later in life, after proving themselves in the breeding pasture. It is for this reason we keep a semen interest in all bulls sold in our production sale.
Even bulls sold to commercial herds may become popular at a later time, as more carcass data is collected on their calves.
If you purchase a bull that we retain an interest in and you choose to collect semen from that bull as an “insurance policy” for your own use, that semen is 100% yours. Gardiner Angus Ranch may also wish to collect semen from the bull, either for in-herd use or to build a jointly-owned semen bank for sale purposes.
If you are not interested in collecting semen on the bull, GAR has the right to collect the bull, at their own expense, for their own use. Semen collection will be arranged at the convenience of the owner of the possession interest.

A WORD ABOUT FREE DELIVERY
Gardiner Angus Ranch offers its customers free delivery anywhere in the lower 48 states. As a part of that delivery we work with reputable livestock transportation companies that we feel comfortable with in the handling of your cattle in both a professional and conscientious way. GAR will do everything possible to deliver your cattle to a point that is convenient for both you and the trucking company. In some cases where there are cattle from multiple owners loaded on the same truck, it is necessary for the buyer to meet the truck at a centaral location such as a livestock auction or veterinary clinic relatively close to them. We also encourage the drivers to be as flexible as possible and request that they not deliver your cattle in the middle of the night if avoidable. If you would like to insure your cattle, you can do so on sale day. Most of the cattle to be delivered from the sale are delivered within 45 days after the sale. If, for any reason, you desire an expedited delivery, please notify Grant Gardiner at (620) 635-0382 or email grant.c.gardiner@gmail.com and we will make arrangements for quicker delivery.

EVALUATION
We recently received the final AAA Beef Improvement Record Carcass Summary on our 14-monthold, home-raised steers.

INDUSTRY CONNECTED GENOMIC TOOLS
Genomic information discovered by submitting DNA samples has enabled population geneticists like Sally Northcutt, Method Genetics, to develop the most accurate and powerful selection tools in the history of beef production. Today, we provide index values from Method Genetics on all registered cattle. Using these indexes allows our customers who use Method Genetics on their own commercial cattle to compare indexes of our sale bulls directly to the index values in their own herds. This provides our customers with a unique “tie” to the commercial industry not offered by the use of AAA genetic predictions. The Retained Ownership Income (ROI) index is the most complete index we can offer our customers for evaluating bulls. ROI provides a complete production system approach, incorporating traits from birth to harvest. ROI combines maternal, growth, and carcass quality into one comprehensive index. This makes ROI the most useful index for selecting bulls to sire replacement females or offspring headed for the feedlot and the food supply. This powerful information enables our commercial customers to make strategic decisions using accurate information, taking advantage of markets that best fit their operation.

Understand Your ENVIRONMENT and PROTECT Your INVESTMENT
by Randall Spare, DVM
Purchasing the right bull for an operation requires an outlay of time and money. The investment should not stop with writing the check. A thorough knowledge and implementation of animal husbandry is also paramount.
As with all purchases of livestock put into a particular management system, it is important to understand the environment from which they came. For instance, the bulls at GAR have been raised in an environment limiting their exposure to very few internal parasites. We have performed parasite testing for the past five years. We perform egg counts on these bulls at weaning time. Minimal to zero eggs are found in the samples. We continue to monitor the parasite load as moisture changes with the seasons.
It is important information as bulls move to areas that environmentally experience more parasite pressure. After the bulls have been exposed to parasites in areas of more rainfall or confined grazing systems, it is important to deworm with an oral dewormer and repeated in four weeks. Your investment in a GAR bull comes from a fairly naive environment relative to internal parasites. It is predictable, with very little previous parasitic exposure, animals do not have a quick and active immune response. Scientifically, when bovine are fighting parasitism, there is a down regulation of the arm of the immune system that fight bacterial infection in others areas of the body. Therefore, we highly recommend you invest in a strategic deworming program for all new animals introduced to your environment.
It is also important to understand that, at 18 months of age, permanent incisors are just now erupting in the mouth. Young animals may struggle maintaining weight. A 12–18-month old bull has the poorest incisor dentition of any time in its life. Once he reaches 18 months of age, two new permanent incisors erupt each year until four-and-one-half years of age. Understanding these young animals will need nutritional support as they start to reach the dental maturity is critical to overall health, longevity and success in your operation.
Every bull that leaves Gardiner Angus Ranch will have one dose of Anaplasmosis vaccine. One dose does not fully protect the animals. The new owners are encouraged to give the second dose, particularly if in areas of high risk. Research indicates a naïve bull exposed to anaplasmosis just prior to the breeding season will experience a transient decrease in fertility while the immune system fights the disease. The animal may not show clinical signs or die while it fights infection, but there is a time of decreased sperm quality.
To ensure long term health and decrease the chance of spreading disease through blood, a strict adherence of “one needle per animal” should be followed. We use one sleeve per cow, dipping instruments that might transmit blood between animals in antiseptic, in an effort to decrease the chance of spreading pathogens.
GAR appreciates the investment many loyal customers have made. The maintenance these young sires receive as they go to new locations will ensure a more productive life and a complete return on your investment.

The Females that Sell
In the 1980s, database selection was in its infancy, when we were first introduced to Expected Progeny Differences. There was debate over the legitimacy of these genetic predictions. Henry Gardiner knew the predictions were accurate because of his detailed records of the sires used from his total A.I. herd (since 1964) and their evaluation in the Sire Summary. John Crouch used to give a presentation called “Like Begets Like.” This talk stressed the importance of using the best Angus bulls possible for the traits of merit and breeding them to the daughters of the best bulls of the Angus breed for these economically important attributes. Henry’s playbook has stressed this strategy since the very first American Angus Association Sire Evaluation Report in the fall of 1980. Today, we have more EPDs, more indices, and more genomic predictions. These tools are
THE DONORS THAT SELL
The 55 donor heifers were born in 2022 and all had embryos collected between November 2022 and March of 2023. The donor heifers sell OPEN and ready to flush.
more accurate than ever before. Yet, has anything changed? Absolutely not! “Like STILL begets like.”
Discipline is the key to implementing this breeding program from generation to generation. No compromising of these specs for the important traits for each sire selected. Pretty simple. Yet often this is unique, due to the temptation of an exceptional single trait, but doesn’t fit the multitrait excellence we demand for each mating.
We always are on a “journey” to create the most profitable cattle possible. Our connection to the commercial beef industry guides us with a knowledge of “what makes money” for us and our customers. These systems work. This method has been branded as “boring” by some. We prefer to call Henry’s method as predictable, practical, and profitable.
The genetic predictions of the females we are
selling on April 6, 2024, are the result of 60 years of a diligent total A.I. using the best bulls of the Angus breed. We are confident that, not only do these females rank as trait leaders in the Angus population, but their multi-trait excellence is our best effort to date to breed Angus cattle of magnitude.
To some, the word “sustainability” is controversial. To us, sustainability means our businesses (yours and ours) can be profitable and feed the world. If our animals do not do this, we humans will not be successful. We are even more excited about the next 60 years than the previous six decades! With technology, husbandry, and genetics we all will succeed. This is our commitment to the past, the present, and the future. We thankfully and confidently go forward with you.
The average EPDs, $Indexes and ROI for this group of heifer donors is shown in the table on listed below. There is little that needs to be said beyond these genetic breeding values other than to share each donor heifer’s flush history and that information is included in the footnote accompanying each catalog entry. Simply stated: These are the best females to ever sell in the history of Gardiner Angus Ranch. We can assure you that these females exceed the value of famous brand numbers we are known for. Yes, they are better than 867, 199, 309, 614, 706, 2536, 1885, 2345, 1039, 830, 3132, 6095 etc. These females offer immense value to add value to your family’s herd and overall value to the Beef Industry.

The Females that Sell
GAR 3-N-1 PAIRS & BRED COWS
We will sell 103 bred, registered cows. Most of these cows were former donors or cows that were not bred in the correct window for last year’s sale. There are 30 3-N-1 cows with heifer calf pairs. There are 50 bred cows that will be sold individually. Fifty-three head will sell in 18 groups.
GAR BRED HEIFERS
We will follow the bred cows with 181 registered bred heifers. The heifers sell individually (90 head) or in groups of three (96 head). The average EPDs, $Indexes and ROI values for this group are shown in the table below.
These bred daughters of Home Town, Transcendent, Sunbeam, Freedom, and Kansas and are bred to the good bulls of the Angus breed. These are the type of females to build a cowherd with that are truly elite in the Angus population.
Customers looking for “value” should stay on the edge of their seats until the very end of this group. These females are truly the best of our ranch, and they are ALL OF THEM. They are bred to what we believe are some of the BEST bulls of the breed!
GAR COMMERCIAL BRED COWS & HEIFERS
In addition to the registered females, we will sell 279 bred, commercial heifers and bred cows. The commercial females will sell in 10 head groups. The cows and heifers selling in groups of 10 head are truly elite. Note there are commercial females selling in these groups with ROI indices as high as some of the donors. These commercial females are truly some of the highest ranking females for the traits of merit in the Method Genetics database. Each commercial female in the sale is bred to an A.I. sire (no clean-up bulls) using the exact same proven sires we use in our registered herd. The commercial females have been genomic tested with Method Genetics (MG) Choice. Delivery of the commercial cows and heifers is free to anywhere in the lower 48 states.

Value is a reality determined by actual performance throughout the production system. Value is determined by live calves, pounds at weaning, fertility and efficiency. A report card ultimately defines value by documenting the quality of a beef carcass and the premiums earned. Our connection to the commercial beef industry guides us with knowledge of “what makes money” for us and our customers. These systems work.

Bred 1/20/2024 to B&B Preeminent. We do have fun designing genetics of value. The quest is our thirst that will never be quenched!
Our females, registered and commercial, are expected to thrive in the same environment. The females calve in the pastures. Calves are tattooed in the pasture within 24 hours. Cow and calf are left to nurture until the fall round-up. During the fall round-up, calves are weaned, vaccinated and receive a permanent tag. Cows are synchronized, vaccinated, bred and turned back out to pasture to replicate the process. Constantly applying selection pressure to calving ease enables the cow herd to calve, with no assistance, in their home pasture.

The commercial herds whose U.S. Premium Beef results we chart use Method Genetics EPDs and indexes to benchmark the calf crop and make decisions regarding replacements. Many A.I. or breed in a time restricted window.

Cattle disease traceability is an important component in the overall biosecurity of the U.S. beef cattle industry, playing a significant role in resuming and maintaining commerce in the event of a disease outbreak. The development of a cattle disease traceability system has risen to one of the top priorities in the industry throughout multiple segments of the beef value chain as we witnessed other proteins deeply impacted by disease outbreaks and market disruption.
To address this industry-wide priority, U.S. CattleTrace was established from a collaborative effort of traceability programs across the U.S.
The system for individual animal disease traceability is complex and must be implemented prior to a disease outbreak to be effective. To be successful, the process for cattle producers must be simple, fast and affordable. Proactive participation in U.S. CattleTrace enables producers to be at the forefront of this industry-driven initiative and influence the future of an expanded traceability system in the U.S. beef cattle industry. The purpose-built infrastructure of this system has the potential to open doors to new value-added opportunities in the beef supply chain, including but not limited to: inventory management, animal health management, operational efficiencies, and enhanced domestic and international trade.
In order to protect the U.S. share of the protein market from the potential impact of a disease event, cattle identification and traceability needs to be enacted, enhanced and further developed using electronic I.D. and electronic transfer of data. U.S. CattleTrace is focused on developing a voluntary national traceability system to include all cattle and complement the current USDA regulation s. For this to be successful it will require all stakeholders, which includes producers, suppliers, service providers, packers, retailers, along with state and federal animal health officials to collectively collaborate and support disease traceability.
The goal is to build a system that is recognized as the nationally significant animal disease traceability system by all domestic and foreign markets. The U.S. CattleTrace disease traceability system strives to be equitable to all industry segments and must be industry-driven and managed by a producer board of directors to ensure data privacy and protection.
OUR MISSION
To develop and manage a nationally significant, robust and globally accepted voluntary animal disea se traceability system for all cattle entering commerce through an industry led, sustainable, non-profit private enterprise in order to protect the nation’s herd and U.S. share of the protein market with as little disruption to day- to-day operations as possible.
OUR VISION
To be a producer-driven and national leader in animal disease traceability, providing a data management system for rapid animal disease response that is fully accepted by U.S producers and global consumers.

You can have it all!

Bred 2/08/2024 to G A R Powercat. The opportunity to access Home Town females will pay dividend in your herd for generations!
Bred 2/8/2024 to G A R Powercat. Stripping away the ego of seedstock hype is important as we seek accurate answers.
Often stating Angus cattle “need to work in any environment” falls into the perception of traditional cow country and the areas frequently dictated by weather. On a recent customer visit, we were reminded of the remarkable capacity of Angus cattle to convert cellulose to beef in truly extreme environments.
You buy good bulls with key genetic values for herd improvement. You know that EPDs are a selection tool to assist in focusing your production goals. You target an industry-focused high quality carcass value as part of your breeding goals.
Yet, when it comes to the cow herd and replacement heifer choices or selection strategies, the access to commercial genetic selection tools aligned with your goals and in the language of our industry (EPDs, indexes) is limited.
Method Genetics® results may just be what you need. In nearly six years (that’s about a generation interval in a commercial cow calf operation), Method customers in over 20 states now have access to EPDs and index values for their females to fine tune their selection strategies. This is a progressive step beyond just placing genetic pressure on the sire side of the equation.
What is the goal of Method Genetics?
Method Genetics provides a flexible, analytical opportunity for Angus-based cattle producers by using DNA technology and incorporating it into a genetic evaluation system.
Who is the target audience of Method?
Method selection tools are geared toward commercial Angus cow herds interested in characterizing potential replacement heifers and foundation females.
Why is Method Genetics different?
Established in 2014, Method Genetics LLC provides genetic selection tools and decision-making assistance related to commercial cattle production. Through the Method single-step multi-trait genetic evaluation, commercial cow-calf operators can access EPDs and indexes on their cow herd for use in genetic selection. DNA technology makes this selection advantage available to commercial herds, large and small, that in the past could only use EPDs in sire selection.
How do I use Method Genetics results?
Method results are typically used to rank replacement females for selection and culling. Producers review Method results when purchasing potential herd sires and use the Method rankings to match their herd goals. Emphasis is placed on the Method indexes for maternal, growth, and retained ownership.
How do I begin participating in Method Genetics?
Most producers begin by collecting DNA samples for genotyping. Blood cards and tissue sampling units are acceptable. There are no enrollment fees. Many producers have historical data from their herds (weaning weights, carcass data) that they have not ever really been able to fully utilize to aide in selection for their herds. This information can also
be incorporated into the genetic evaluation to give producers even more informative selection tools.
How are Method indexes (MPI, QPI, and ROI) computed?
Your genotyping results on tested animals go through our complete genetic evaluation that generates key Method Genetics EPDs and indexes. Method has a database of performance trait records, pedigrees, and DNA genotypes used in a single-step genetic evaluation to derive EPDs for use in the Method indexes. Method does not use breed organization EPDs are part of this process. Because of what we know about EPDs and their derivation, Method results are comparable to other Method results, but they are not comparable to breed organization EPDs.
Can this testing identify parentage?
Method Genetics has a large database of AI and natural service sires for use in sire assignment. Participants with tested females on file have the opportunity to generate pedigrees from this parentage benefit, adding increase accuracy to their Method results. Parentage work is included in the Method DNA testing at no cost.
What details are needed on commercial Angus samples for DNA testing?
Samples are sent directly to Method Genetics personnel. The minimum inputs needed for commercial cattle DNA samples are a unique herd ID, approximate age, and gender for each sample. We can incorporate any pedigree you know, also.
What is Method ROI that I keep hearing about and seeing in catalogs?
Cattle producers interested in a complete production system approach from conception through carcass end-point would typically use the Retained Ownership Income (ROI) index as a tool. ROI ties together reproduction, calving ease, maternal genetic merit, growth throughout the calf’s lifetime, and quality-based carcass merit in an Angus-based herd. The ROI is reported in dollars per calf produced in the herd, and it consolidates the sub-indexes of MPI and QPI.
What results are received after testing is completed?
Most producers receive the Method EPDs for calving ease, carcass traits, and docility. Of primary interest are the three Method Genetic index (MPI, QPI, ROI) solutions that accompany the EPDs. Results are returned in a sortable spreadsheet for use at the operation in breeding, selection and culling decisions.
How do my Method results compare to cow herds with similar goals?
Method customers receive summary statistics to compare their herd results to a database of similar commercial cow herds with goals focused on maternal and retained ownership traits for a high-quality carcass product. This benchmark data helps Method customers characterize and understand where their current herd’s genetic level is and provides specific selection direction to reach goals for consistent, high-quality production of USDA Prime and Premium Choice product.
What is the Method Genetics Marketing Advantage?
Beyond the use of Method results for selection decisions by a commercial cow-calf producer, this information has become a reliable means to characterize the genetic merit of replacement females, providing confidence for buyers purchasing replacements. Selecting commercial replacement females with the Method Genetics results allow a producer to jump-start their program with known genetics based on a proven track record.
MPI: Maternal Production
QPI: Quality Pounds
ROI: Retained Ownership Income
Where do the percentile ranks on young sires and AI sires seen in catalogs come from?
Method has seedstock participants using the Method Prime test and they receive more detailed EPDs and percentiles based upon the Method Genetic population. They have made a commitment to their customers using the Method Genetics system by testing and providing the Method indexes on the bulls they offer. The bulls they sell provide a great opportunity as they have Method EPDs and indexes which are comparable to other Method Genetics-generated solutions, regardless of the testing points.
How do I choose a level of testing at Method?
Most commercial Angus herds go with the Method Choice ($35). Method Prime runs $45 as of today and is used mostly by seedstock participants.
What age do I pull DNA samples on my animals?
DNA samples can be collected at any age. Advanced customers in the Method system have begun to use tissue sampling units on calves after birth. We encourage customers to conservatively approach testing and focus on the newest generations of their cattle.
I am already testing with Method Genetics, so how can I learn more about my cattle?
If details are provided from the customer, we use existing pedigree information (for example on registered Angus bulls owned or AI sires being used or females of known genetics) to fill in relationship gaps, as well as incorporating this pedigree information into the genetic evaluation tools created. From a performance record standpoint, we can also incorporate these data (contemporary group weaning weights for example) into a genetic evaluation and key EPDs and index values include this information.
Method Genetics® Choice Solutions
Do Method Genetics results ever change?
We continue to add performance records, pedigree, and genotypes to the Method genetic evaluation. An EPD is a prediction of an animal’s true genetic merit that has an associated possible change, or standard error of prediction. EPDs are not static values and can change as more is information is incorporated into the system from one evaluation to the next. Customers actively participating in the Method Genetics program can request cow herd updates as needed to better prepare for bull selection and breeding herd management.

GLOSSARY OF TERMS AND ABBREVIATIONS
Expected Progeny Differences (EPD), is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. Interim EPDs may appear on young animals when their performance has yet to be incorporated into the American Angus Association National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) procedures. This EPD will be preceded by an “I”, and may or may not include the animal’s own performance record for a particular trait, depending on its availability, appropriate contemporary grouping, or data edits needed for NCE.
GROWTH
Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers.
Birth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
Weaning Weight EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
Residual Average Daily Gain (RADG), expressed in pounds per day, is a predictor of a sire’s genetic ability for postweaning gain in future progeny compared to that of other sires, given a constant amount of feed consumed.
Dry Matter Intake (DMI), expressed in pounds per day, is a predictor of difference transmitting ability for feed intake during the postweaning phase, compared to that of other sires.
Yearling Height EPD (YH), is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling height, expressed in inches, compared to that of other sires.
Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC), expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires.
Docility (DOC), is expressed as a difference in yearling cattle temperament, with a higher value indicating more favorable docility. It predicts the average difference of progeny from a sire in comparison with another sire’s calves. In herds where temperament problems are not an issue, this expected difference would not be realized.
MATERNAL
Heifer Pregnancy (HP), the heifer pregnancy EPDs are designed to characterize differences among sires in the Angus breed for daughter’s heifer pregnancy. When comparing two sires based on their heifer pregnancy EPDs (reported in units of percentage), a higher EPD sire would be expected to have daughters with a greater probability or chance of becoming pregnant than a sire with the lower EPD.
Calving Ease Maternal (CEM), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf daughters. It predicts the average ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires.
Maternal Milk EPD (Milk), is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.
Mature Weight EPD (MW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of the difference in mature weight of daughters of a sire compared to the daughters of other sires.
Mature Height EPD (MH), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the difference in mature height of a sire’s daughters compared to daughters of other sires.
Cow Energy Value ($EN), expressed in dollar savings per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars saved on feed energy expenses). Components for computing the cow $EN savings difference include lactation energy requirements and energy costs associated with differences in mature cow size.
CARCASS
Carcass Weight EPD (CW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Marbling EPD (Marb), expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Ribeye Area EPD (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Fat Thickness EPD (Fat), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

BW — Birth Weight: The actual weight in pounds at birth.
METHOD GENETICS® CHOICE EPD AND SELECTION INDEX KEY
CARCASS WEIGHT (CW): The carcass weight EPD is reported in pounds of harvest carcass weight. As with other weight traits, selection for weight genetics is moderately to highly heritable and will lead to increased directional genetic change in pounds. The CW EPD has contributions not only from the genotyped calves, but harvest carcass records, ultrasound indicator trait results, and available pedigree.
MARBLING (MARB): Marbling EPDs are reported in harvest marbling score units, with a higher value being more favorable.
RIBEYE AREA (REA): The ribeye area EPD, with a higher value as the typical desired direction, can be used to place selection pressure on this trait to impact red meat yield.
CALVING EASE DIRECT (CED): Reported as a percentage of unassisted calvings, this EPD is used to select favorable calving ease genetics for use in matings to first calf heifers. The value is more noted for sire selection. In Angus-influenced herds that have heavily emphasized calving ease genetics, selection pressure for this trait may or may not be a priority. A higher value is more favorable. For example if there was a 5 percentage point difference between to animals (+10 vs +5), one would expect 5 more calves out of 100 to be born unassisted in future progeny, to favor choosing the animal with the CED of +10.
DOCILITY (DOC): Docility is reported as a convenience trait with a higher value favoring more docile temperament. Reported in percentage units, these EPDs can be used as an accessory sorting tool as needed.
CALVING EASE MATERNAL (CEM): This EPD is applicable to calves out of daughters of first-calf heifers and their unassisted calving percentage difference relative to other individuals. Again, as with CED, a higher value is more favorable and reported in units of percent.
MATERNAL PRODUCTION INDEX (MPI): The Maternal Production Index is reported in dollars per
calf produced from the breeding herd with Angus-based genetics. It encompasses direct and maternal calving ease, heifer pregnancy, weaning growth, maternal milk, and mature size differences in a scenario where replacement females are retained and calves are marketed at weaning.
QUALITY POUNDS INDEX (QPI): The Quality Pounds Index is reported in dollars per calf for herds with Angus-based genetics. It focuses on the terminal side of the herd’s business for feedlot gain and carcass merit genetic differences. There are no provisions for calving ease or maternal traits, with the assumption that all calves are under a retained ownership scenario fed out and marketed on a premium quality-based grid.
RETAINED OWNERSHIP INCOME (ROI): Cattle producers interested in a complete production system approach from conception through carcass end-point should use the Retained Ownership Income index ties together reproduction, calving ease, maternal genetic merit, growth throughout the calf’s lifetime, and quality based carcass merit in an Angus-based herd. The ROI is reported in dollars per calf produced in the herd, and consolidates the sub-indexes of MPI and QPI.
METHOD GENETICS EPD AND INDEX PERCENTILE RANKS (%) are a numeric ranking of the animal’s EPD and Index values on a 1% to 100% scale. For most traits a lower numeric value is considered more favorable, such as for CED EPD. For example, a 25% presented with an EPD indicates that animal is in the upper 25 percent of the animals in the Method Genetics evaluation for calves born in the last five years.
THE GARDINER ANGUS RANCH BREEDING GUARANTEE
We guarantee that all breeding cattle sold by Gardiner Angus Ranch, both bulls and females, are fertile to the best of our knowledge. If a bull is injured at any time in the 12 months following the sale so as to make them functionally infertile, we will provide you with a satisfactory replacement, if available, or issue you a credit equal to the bull’s purchase price minus the salvage value received for that bull. If a female is determined to be a non-breeder, then we would ask you to sell her and would offer you the difference of her purchase price minus the salvage value as a credit in any future GAR sale. This guarantee is in addition to the Sale Terms and Conditions of the American Angus Association which also apply.
With reliance and tenacity, the Quarter Horse mare C Spot Betty overcame physical flaws stacked against her and won prestigious cutting horse titles. Along the way, she captured the hearts of her fans, trainers, and the Gardiner family.
—by Jennifer Denison, Cultured Cowgirl Collective
Gardiner Angus Ranch is best known for its superior beef cattle genetics. Yet, the multi-generational operation also has a history of producing athletic ranch and performance horses with foundation Quarter Horse and racing bloodlines tracing to King P-234, Jackie Bee, Gold Fingers, Playgun, Sugar Bars, and Three Bars.
The most influential and beloved horse in recent years to the Gardiner family is C Spot Betty, a 2015 Quarter Horse mare Mark and Eva Gardiner bought as a 4-year-old in August of 2019 at the recommendation of National Cutting Horse Association Hall of Fame trainer Andy Sherrerd of Purcell, Oklahoma. Though “Betty” would never pass a vet check due to unsightly bone spurs protruding from her knees, the Gardiners and Sherrerd saw her potential.
“Mark wasn’t looking to buy a horse, but I’m always looking for a prospect,” says Sherrerd. “I thought she’d make a good little horse for an amateur. There are horses that, when you put amateurs on them, they don’t quite give 100 percent. But Betty tried her guts out no matter who was on her. Come to find out, she was a good horse for me!”
Sherrerd showed the horse to numerous wins and placings, including an American Quarter Horse Association world championship, while Mark and, later, Eva racked up titles and earnings in the amateur. The petite sorrel mare with a star, snip, and left hind sock earned more than $107,000 during her short career and became a favorite among spectators and exhibitors alike.
Besides her cow sense and quick, catlike, low-to-theground moves, what made Betty so special was that she put aside self-preservation and gave everything she had despite her physical limitations. Some questioned whether she’d stay sound, but Gardiner says she never took a lame step. One could say the petite sorrel mare defied the odds against her, but anyone who has ever swung a leg over her attributes her success to her natural cow sense and athletic ability, relentless perseverance, and big heart.
COMBINING CATTLE AND CUTTING HORSES
Growing up, Gardiner and his siblings were often horseback doing ranch work and competing in roping events. For many years, he focused on building the cattle business and raising his three sons—Cole, Ransom, and Quanah—with Eva, who is a veterinarian. Then, more than a decade ago, he became interested in cutting. Legendary cutting horse trainer and NCHA Hall of Famer Buster Welch was a longtime family friend and bought Gardiner-raised bulls for years. Welch referred Gardiner to Shannon Hall, another accomplished cutting horse trainer, who was looking to buy cattle for his ranch in Oklahoma.
“I do cattle genetics for a living, but I was fortunate to have friends in the cutting horse industry who bought bulls from us, and I wanted to learn more about cutting from them,” says Gardiner, who runs the family’s cattle operation in Ashland, Kansas, with his brother, Greg. “After I started working with Shannon, I would go down to his place and turn back for him and learn all I could about cutting.”
It wasn’t long before Gardiner asked Hall to help him find a

cutting horse prospect and train it for competition. They purchased a Playgun daughter that Hall showed for a while before she joined the GAR broodmare band. Next, the Gardiners purchased Duals Play Time (One Time Pepto x Duals Play Kit x Kit Dual). The 2005 sorrel mare won money with Hall and Gardiner at the reins in 2014.
A few years later, Hall referred Gardiner to Sherrerd, another reputable Oklahoma cutting horse trainer looking to buy a bull. The men shared similar values, interests, and goals and developed a mutually beneficial friendship and business relationship in the horse and cattle industries.
“Andy works incredibly hard and is consistent every day,” shares Gardiner. “His integrity as a person bleeds over to his integrity as a trainer. He honors the horse and treats each one as an individual and makes it the best it can be.”

RISING FROM THE ASHES
In March of 2017, GAR was ravaged by the Starbuck Fire, including Mark and Eva’s home and hundreds of cattle. The largest wildfire in Kansas history, the blaze was caused by high winds blowing powerlines that had become loose from ice storms during the winter. It only took a few sparks to set the dry grasslands on fire, and it wasn’t long before walls of flames and smoke engulfed the ranch and much of Clark County. Fortunately, the Gardiners, their horses, and their most valuable seed stock survived. Ranchers are known for their strength and resilience in hard times, and the Gardiners are no exception. In less than a year, they had risen from the ashes and rebuilt the ranch to be better than ever.
In 2019, about a year after reconstructing the ranch, Gardiner and Sherrerd watched the NCHA-sanctioned show at the American Royal in Kansas City, Kansas. A small, 14.2-hand sorrel mare ridden by southeastern Colorado cutting horse trainer Nate Miller entered the pen, quietly and efficiently sorted out a cow, and began to work it with equal amounts of grit and grace.
“She
was really small as a 2-year-old, but she was super cowy and wanted to lay down on the ground and cut a cow, she shouldn’t have been able to do what she did because of her size, but she did it anyway. I tried to work her slowly to get her comfortable [on cattle], but she took to everything naturally. I didn’t have to train it into her.”
— Ryan Moore
“Andy asked me what I thought of the horse,” recalls Gardiner. “I had a home-raised 4-year-old we were showing at the time, but I asked him if she was out of our league, and he said, ‘No.’”
Miller had bought the horse in the spring of her 4-year-old year from her breeder, Joe Wes Davis Jr. of New Franklin, Missouri, and had ridden her for only a few months before taking her to the American Royal.
“I had seen Nick O’Dell show her in Lyons, Kansas. She was one of the quickest horses I’d ever seen, and Joe Wes asked me if I wanted to buy her,” recalls Miller. “After I bought her, I showed her at the West Texas Futurity [in Amarillo, Texas]
and placed [in the top five]. The next cutting I went to was the American Royal in Kansas City. I won around $10,000 on her. She was real cowy, easy to work, and had tons of try.”
TRAINING A HORSE WITH HEART
Raised by Davis, Betty was by his stallion C Spot Cut (Spots Hot x Ruby Duece x Smart Little Jerry) and out of his great broodmare Bet On The Cat (Bet On Me 498 x Desires Cat x High Brow Cat). Davis bought C Spot Cut as a 2-year-old at the Western Bloodstock NCHA Futurity Sales in Fort Worth, Texas, and began putting the stallion on cattle when he brought him home. Shown primarily by Davis and Nick O’Dell, the horse has accrued lifetime earnings of more than $60,000, according to EquiStat. Davis later gelded him and sold him to Linda Bachmeier about a year and a half ago, and she continues showing the gelding.
Davis also bought Bet On the Cat at the NCHA Futurity sale as a filly and trained her.
“She was a great 3-year-old—all of the great trainers out there thought she’d have a chance to win the [NCHA] Futurity, but a couple of weeks before it, she injured her front suspensory ligaments and was off for a couple of years,” says Davis.
“She was one of the best horses I’ve owned; I showed her a few times and won about $4,000 on her, but she just wouldn’t stay sound, so we bred her to ‘Spot’ and got C Spot Betty.”
Davis sent Betty to Missouri cutting horse trainer Ryan Moore for training as a 2-year-old.
“When I got her, she had a halter on but wasn’t halter-broke,” recalls Moore. “She was easy to start and wanted to please, but she was really fractious and sensitive as a 2-year-old.”
When Moore started working her on the flag, Betty’s natural cow sense and athleticism shined.
“She was really small as a 2-year-old, but she was super cowy and wanted to lay down on the ground and cut a cow,” he remembers. “She shouldn’t have been able to do what she
Betty and Eva winning at the 2023 Non-Pro Cutting
did because of her size, but she did it anyway. I tried to work her slowly to get her comfortable [on cattle], but she took to everything naturally. I didn’t have to train it into her.”
Moore rode the horse until the summer of her 3-year-old year, and then she went to Nick O’Dell in Fort Scott, Kansas, to continue her training and start her show career.
“The best thing about her was her trainability and work ethic; she tried to do anything you asked of her. She wasn’t very big, but she sure tried hard,” says O’Dell. “She was the most pleasant horse I’ve been around and a joy to train.”
Her only drawbacks were her size and knees, but Moore, O’Dell, and Davis agree that what she lacked structurally, she made up for with heart, and she never showed signs of lameness.
“Betty was a short-legged mare with a heart the size of Texas,” says Davis. “There wasn’t a cow she couldn’t keep in front of her. She was a pretty mare with a gentle disposition, but she had knees like her mama, and I weighed that against her future and decided to sell her to Nate Miller.”
MAKING MIGHTY MOVES
The Gardiners negotiated with Miller to purchase Betty. They traded a home-raised cutting mare and $15,000 cash for
the 4-year-old Betty in August of 2019. After passing through the reins of three trainers, she found her permanent home in Sherrerd’s training barn.
Though Betty was off to a good start and highly trainable, she was a little “wild,” notes Gardiner. The mare’s quick, powerful moves and unique, low-to-the-ground style sometimes made her a challenge to ride, and she could easily throw a rider off balance.
“What made her so different is that her front end would drop out from her, and she’d go down on her belly,” says Gardiner. “If you weren’t seated, you’d go over the top of her. In some ways, she was the easiest horse I’ve ever ridden, but she was different, and you had to be ready. She was so physical that she would make such a big move and overdo it and get out of position. Andy slowed it all down, making her think about the cow and increasing her accuracy. Betty is who she is because of Andy.”
Gardiner recalls the first time he showed her.
“It was at a show in Stillwater, Oklahoma, and she jumped out from under me, and all the trainers thought that was different,” he says. “I remember telling Andy early on that I’ll either win first on her or get a zero. Andy said, ‘I’m zero for seven on her right now.’”
While the Gardiners and Sherrerd were aware of Betty’s blemished knees, they didn’t let her flaws stand in the way of helping her reach her potential.
“We were selective where we competed and didn’t take her to places we thought had bad ground and would put her in a bad situation,” explains Sherrerd. “And we tried not to show her more than once a day.”
Other than routine joint maintenance, selective showing, and plenty of downtime, Betty required minimal treatment for her condition. By 2020, she was coming on strong in the cutting ranks. In her four years showing with the Gardiners and Sherrerd, Betty went head-to-head with top cutting horses like Blackish
and Rollz Royce. She even competed against her sire after he was gelded and beat him. She became legendary in the Midwest cutting circle, and when she sorted a cow from the herd, even the best professional horsemen stopped to watch her work.
“What makes her special is she tried her guts out,” says Sherrerd, recalling his go on Betty in the 5/6-year-old finals at the 2020 Arbuckle Mountain Futurity. “The cows were pretty tough, and I was deep in the draw. I cut the second cow, and it attacked her. There was a minute left, and Lloyd Cox was turning back for me. Everyone was trying to get the cow off Betty, but she was doing everything she could to hold it. Finally, it ran her over. There was silence, and then Lloyd said he’d never seen a horse do that. Betty was alright, and I got a zero [score], but I wasn’t disappointed because she was trying her best.”
The duo came back the following year and won the Arbuckle with a score of 227. In the fall of 2021, Betty and Sherrerd achieved their most prestigious win in the senior cutting at the AQHA World Show in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, with a 227, taking home $5,000. They had been the reserve champions the year before.
According to EquiStat, the mare has surpassed lifetime earnings of $107,000, “most of which was won $1,000 at a time,” calculates Gardiner.
FOCUSING ON THE FUTURE
Last year, the Gardiners and Sherrerd noticed slight deviation in Betty’s knees and opted to retire her from the show pen as a precaution. She won her last cutting in July of 2023 with Eva aboard. Today, she spends her time in a plush stall

“Everybody loves Betty,” observes Sherrerd. “A lot of people ask about her and her colts. I’m really looking forward to riding her colts; the one I have now reminds me a lot of her.”
Perhaps it was a case of being at the right place at the right time that led the Gardiners to Betty, or maybe it was divine intervention. Nevertheless, she shares her owners’ perseverance and resiliency and has the heart of a champion.
“Whether it’s a fire, cutting or breeding cattle, you keep going and being thankful for the opportunity we have to do this,” says Gardiner. “Betty brings happiness and epitomiz-

No Culls, Just More Marketing Opportunities
Make top dollar on every single animal in your herd using this strategy.
by Paige Nelson
Imagine having EPDs and genetic percentiles on each animal in your commercial cow herd. What could you accomplish in your breeding and marketing program by knowing each animal’s performance potential? Could you use that information to market individuals into a channel where they capture their highest value — whether as a breeding animal or by entering the food chain? The best genetics stay in the herd. The lesser genetics or byproduct cattle enter someone else’s herd or they attain their marbling potential in the feedlot.
Yes! You absolutely could do those things!
But it sounds complicated right?
Well, before I lose you…Maybe the best part of making more money per individual animal is that it doesn’t cost an arm and leg, and you don’t have to change the calving/ weaning date, vaccination schedule, value-added program or build more fences.
Have I piqued your interest?
OK, then let’s meet a Guymon, Okla., rancher who has revolutionized the way she manages and markets her family’s 400 head commercial cow herd.
MAYER RANCH
Since 2014 Margie Mayer Rice (daughter of the late Joe Mayer) commercial heifer and bull calves have been genetically tested using Method Genetics Inc. Method Genetics offers a complete suite of EPDs, reliabilities, percentile rankings, pedigrees, plus indexes for maternal production
(MPI), quality pounds (QPI) and retained ownership income (ROI).
Margie uses that genetic data to manage her calves and cows, so they can generate the most money. By knowing the genetic performance potential of her cow herd and constantly improving those numbers, she has created a high-quality, designer herd. Every Mayer Ranch commercial heifer is marketed as an individual. Nobody goes to the sale barn. Nobody sells as a commodity.
WHY?
Because her cattle have the genetic scores to prove themselves.
HOW?
In Margie’s words, “Raising cattle without using genomics is like aiming at a target with a blindfold on. When you use genomics, the blindfold comes off, and you have a lot better chance of hitting the bullseye.”
Margie’s heifers are AI-ed and put with clean-up bulls in a time-restricted breeding window. At the end of the breeding window, everything is pregnancy tested. She keeps the bred heifers that meet her desired ROI score. Last year it was 270 plus. The heifers under that threshold sell in the Annual “Profit Proven” Gardiner-influenced Commercial Angus Female Sale.
And occasionally some are sold private treaty. Open heifers go to the feedlot.
Margie sent 43 open heifers to the feedlot last summer. Their cutout report from U.S. Premium Beef (USPB)
Margie Mayer Rice manages Mayer Legacy LLC near Guymon, Oklahoma
proved the approach — 42 of the 43 graded Prime. They averaged $3,068 per head.
She sells private treaty bulls that come out of her registered herd, around 100 head, and her commercial first-calf heifers. Bull calves who lack outstanding genetic scores are made steers at branding and go to the feedlot.
Margie is averaging 87% Prime on her steers.
You read that right “87% Prime!”
Marketing leverage doesn’t end with the calf crop. Every animal on Margie’s ranch has Method Genetics EPDs and indexes, so as a cow ages and her younger herd mates prove themselves, she may no longer meet Margie’s production goals.
In that case, she leaves.
“It costs the same to feed an elite cow as it does to feed a sorry cow,” says Margie, “And sometimes it’s cheaper.”
Margie markets cows five years old and younger who no longer fit her operation as private treaty sales or in the Profit Proven sale to customers looking to improve their herd’s genetic scores. Oftentimes, she doesn’t even advertise those animals, but rather has people calling her wondering if she has anything she’s willing to part with. When she does, she gets to name her price.
Katie Blunk at Lazy KT Ranch near Freedom, Okla., does something very similar to Margie. Only, Blunk does it with just 70 head, and markets her open heifers directly to the consumer as freezer beef, under the USDA inspected label of Jackass Ridge Beef, points out
Randall Spare of Ashland Vet Clinic, Ashland, Kan., and consulting veterinarian for both Margie and Blunk.
Genetic testing isn’t just a tool for large producers, says Spare. The average-size herd in the U.S. is 31 head. Small producers actually benefit more from genetic testing and marketing because they have fewer animals on which to spread out the risk, and it helps soften the economic shrink smaller producers are more vulnerable to.
PROOF IN THE NUMBERS
Blunk uses genomics to design her Gardiner-influenced herd into something of legend. She markets virgin bulls

and bred females via private treaty. Blunk has built a solid customer base for her freezer beef due to carcass merit. Her disciplined approach relying on elite GAR genetics provides customer with consistently high marbling, and she garners a premium for all those white flecks because in today’s beef market, she can’t afford to leave money on the table.
I dare bet, neither can you.
Genomics reduce the guesswork, mitigate associated risks and reduce the costs associated with raising cattle, says Margie. Instead of investing in cattle with unknown or lesser performance ability, she has dialed her cattle into exactly the high-quality beef-type for which the industry pays premiums.
In 2013 Mayer Ranch created their first website. Back then, she says, they were advertising that their steers graded 16% Prime.
Today, a little more than 10 years later, her steers are grading 87% Prime.
“There are things you can see phenotypically about a bull or a cow. But really, you don’t know exactly what you’ve got until you have something to back it up,” explains Margie.
She recalls the time her father purchased three different sets of heifers from a Superior sale. Phenotypically, he picked out his favorite group, but when the genetic results came back, the prettiest heifers were the most disappointing.
Margie pulls genetic samples from baby calves and has their results in time for branding. At two months old,
she says, she has created a flexible marketing plan for each calf on the ranch.
“Obviously environment plays a role. It’s not a hard and fast rule, but those numbers really help tell a story,” she says. When it comes to selection, Margie brings up that old hitting the bullseye with a blindfold analogy. Because she knows exactly where her heifers and cows rank within the Method Genetics database, it makes picking out the right bulls at the Gardiner Angus Ranch sale easier, and she can justify paying more for better bulls because she sees improvement every year.

“I look at the heifer, if she’s got great marbling but not great calving ease, I’ll use a high-calving-ease bull on her. Or, if she’s got really good maternal traits but lower value terminal traits, then I’ll find a bull that has better terminal traits and breed her that way.”
— Margie Mayer
For instance, when she became dissatisfied with her ribeye area, she bought bulls with greater REA EPDs. When she AI’s her heifers, much like a seedstock breeder would do, Margie chooses specific matings.
“I look at the heifer,” Margie says, “if she’s got great marbling but not great calving ease, I’ll use a high-calving-ease bull on her. Or, if she’s got really good maternal traits but lower value terminal traits, then I’ll find a bull that has better terminal traits and breed her that way.”
But Margie doesn’t get hung up on those somewhat elusive and lowly heritable maternal traits. She’s in the business to make money, after all.
“Some of the maternal traits, I mean, they’re important, obviously. But the highly heritable traits are probably the ones that I focus on a little more, and specifically, the carcass traits because we do retain ownership in our steers. And, my goal is to have as many Primes as possible because you get more money for those,” she clarifies.
Her goal is to reach 100% Prime on every animal she sends to the feedlot.
Margie says the idea that prioritizing carcass traits somehow diminishes the maternal traits is false.
“We maybe have one cow a year, out of all of our cattle, that maybe

doesn’t have a good udder,” she states. “And I don’t think we’ve ever had one that didn’t have enough milk to feed a calf. That just has never been an issue, so even though I’m not focusing on milk, it hasn’t ever caused me an actual problem in real life.”
Spare puts it simply: “A cow with four teats and a uterus is maternal. They can do that in whatever environment you have, and you manage around it. We manage for more value.”
Elaborating on his point, Spare says if certain maternal traits are important to you, if they are perceived as a driving cost of production, then put the pedal down and use the tools available to moderate cow size, influence milk production, regulate birth weight and make them high-quality carcass cattle, too! With Spare’s genetic counseling, Blunk has honed her genetic approach with laser focus to check all the boxes she strives for with her herd, leaning hard into top percentile rankings for calving ease, weaning and yearling growth, docility, moderate stature, marbling and ribeye traits. This comes backs to dispelling the myths that cattle should fall into either a maternal or terminal category. As Mark Gardiner says, “you an have it all” if you use the genomic tools available.
By knowing each cow’s genomic score and retaining ownership on every animal she sends to the feedlot, Margie makes informed and objective decisions about a cow’s influence and performance. Today, a cow with a 200 ROI
can’t be found on the place. However, a cow with average numbers whose steers consistently grade Prime, she’s not leaving the herd anytime soon.
“My two best calves that were born in 2023 came out of a cow that was born in 2018,” she states.
Longevity means a cow’s ability to improve the herd, not simply produce a calf, says Margie.
“The better cows you have genetically, the more longevity they have, because year after year they produce calves who can keep up with the competition” she clarifies.
Margie uses the ROI score to track improvement. She wants her replacement heifers and private treaty bulls’ ROI score to improve by 10 points each year. Rather than cull every cow ≤269 ROI, Margie buys Gardiner bulls with ROI scores in the top 4% . Every GAR bull is tested using Method Genetics, so identifying which bull(s) is easy.
Simply put, it’s still ranching, it’s just ranching better.
“We saw what Gardiners were doing and how successful they were. And so we said, ‘let’s see if we can mimic what they’re doing with a commercial herd? Why not?” says Margie.
MARKETING
For $45 a head, Margie and Katie get a genetic test on all their heifer calves and earn the right to market above-average cattle, simply because they are documented.
In any herd, when the heifers are tested, the steers can be advertised using their herd mate’s genetic scores which are equivalent. That $45 pays for itself over and over and over again, Margie says.
“You’re getting paid back every time you are calving out a really gentle heifer that’s not trying to kill you. You’re getting paid back every time you have a steer that grades
Prime over Choice or Choice over Select. You’re getting paid every time you can sell a bred heifer for $3,800 instead of for $2,000. I mean to me, $45 is so worth it to have the information you need to be successful.”

Taking the 30,000-foot view, Spare says we have to rethink what successful marketing means.
“If I have a ranch, I have to realize I’m not producing cattle; I’m not harvesting cellulose; I’m producing a meal for somebody. It’s my job to make that meal a successful eating experience. We know that Choice and Prime have driven that,” he says.
Well-documented genetic merit on both the cow and the bull side drives good experiences up and down the beef supply chain, he adds.
Capitalizing on an individual animal’s intrinsic value may be the most difficult part of raising cattle. But for Margie and Blunk, numbers make everything easier. When it comes to private treaty sales, they have the numbers to prove their products.
“Just the fact that I have the information, gives them more confidence as a buyer.”
— Margie Mayer
“I can demand the higher price,” says Margie, “partly because of reputation, partly because I have numbers and real data to show a potential buyer who, even if they’ve never seen Method Genetics test scores before, they can see, ‘Oh, she actually has something to back it up.’
“Just the fact that I have the information, gives them more confidence as a buyer.”
Think about the latitude those numbers give to an online or video sale.
Mark Gardiner advertises a group of feeder calves for a customer, instead of using nomenclature like these are out of Gardiner bulls, used for 20 years. He says “these are top 5% for marbling, top 10% for growth and ribeye area is in the top 5% of the breed” thanks to the information acquired by Method Genetics testing.
Genetically described cattle let you access an elite market above the commodity price without having to jump through the hoops of enrolling in a value-added program or significantly changing management procedures, explains Spare.
On the other hand, how do you make more money out of a value-added program? Simple, says Spare, genomic test your cattle and select for the traits needed to excel in your chosen program. Take non-hormone treated cattle (NHTC) for instance. You lose a lot of feed efficiencies by participating in that program, so select for and then replicate high-growth cattle that marble well. Mitigate the risk for your buyers.
A final thought for you to consider: A cattle herd that is designed using hard numbers to back up selection decisions rewards every link in the chain. The stocker operator that buys the weaned, genomically tested calves uses the growth scores to justify their price. The cattle feeder uses the growth, efficiency and carcass scores to optimize his feeding endpoint. The final owner of the cattle, if they sell on a grid that rewards pounds of upper 2/3 Choice and Prime, often has the heftiest payday!
But if you ask Margie and Blunk, they’ll tell you the biggest winner of them all is the cow-calf producer that keeps the replacement heifers.
It’s still ranching, it’s just ranching in a more profitable way.
In the famous words of Mark Gardiner, “To my customers, I say you can do this too!”
Make sure your calves STAND OUT from the crowd.
The Guaranteed Gardiner Genetics (G program is an opportunity for our commercial customers to identify and capture the value of GARinfluenced genetics in the marketplace. G³ is a source and age verification program administered through IMI Global, Inc. US VerifiedTM is designed to document genetic influence to gain access to premium markets.
Cattle feeders and order buyers recognize the value of GAR-influenced commercial cattle. Adding third party verification adds a level of confidence to the buyer the cattle selling are sired by registered Gardiner Angus bulls or sons of registered Gardiner Angus bulls (50% GAR genetics).
GAR customers participating in the G³ program will receive $2.00 per head for all cattle tagged. For example, if a producer qualified and tags 300 head of cattle, they receive a $600 sale credit that may be used in any Gardiner Angus Ranch sale.
Take advantage of the value-added opportunities resulting from buying a bull from a seedstock supplier who offers more than just a breed. From birth to harvest, Gardiner Angus Ranch genetics are backed by more information that creates more value.
