By travelling on three designated scenic byways, you can make a loop trip. From Boise, take Highway 55 to Lowman (be sure and stop in Gar den Valley/Crouch). Then go west on Highway 21 through historic Idaho City. The loop is 120 miles.

The “Wildlife Canyon Scenic Byway” was so named because of the distinctively high concentration of elk, deer, and bald eagles during the winter months. Wildlife can be observed from highway pullouts between Banks and Lowman, Idaho, in the South Fork Payette River Canyon.
Big game gather in Wildlife Canyon during the winter because the area is lower in elevation than the surround ing mountains and the south-facing slopes have much less snow. They can feed on sagebrush, bitterbrush, and chokecherry. These plants have little nutritional value when compared to the lush grasses and forbs they eat the rest of the year. Because elk and deer eat this lownutrition food in the winter, they are primarily living off of stored fat reserves that were built up the previous summer and fall.

Big game are accustomed to vehicles along the highway, but not people. It’s best to watch them from your car in a pull-out. If you do get out of your car, stay close to it. Moving toward the animals will disturb them. If they start to run or walk away, you’re too close!

This town was once the largest mining settle ment in the Pacific Northwest.
Today it serves as a recreational hub and a popular day trip for residents in the Boise metro area.
Idaho City is also surrounded by the Boise National Forest, so it is near some of southwest Idaho’s best outdoor recreational opportunities including ATV riding, hiking, fishing, camping and Nordic skiing!
Activities that draw visitors to this location include the public hot springs, car shows, local museums, and the annual Idaho City Days.
The Springs outside Idaho City is a day spa featuring natural hot spring pools, a steam room, massages & a cafe serving light fare. Reservations are required. Private Tubs have been winterized and will be available next summer.

Idaho City Area Offers Outstanding Nordic Skiing Opportunities
Idaho has a long snow season and high elevations, which translates into hundreds of miles of skate skiing, traditional skiing and snowshoeing opportunities. In addition to 300 miles of groomed ski trails you will find a few hundred more miles of marked trails that provide solitude and untouched powder.
The Idaho City Area Yurt and Trail System is made up of 4 Park N’ Ski areas adjacent to Highway 21 be tween 18 and 25 miles northeast of Idaho City. It is approximately a two-hour drive from Boise. A permit is required to park in the Park N’ Ski parking lots between November 15th and April 30th. An annual pass is $25.00 and a temporary 3-day pass is $7.50. Passes are available for purchase on-line at https://parksan drecreation.idaho.gov/activities/xc-skiing/park-n-ski-in-idaho/.

All trails in this system are marked by 5” x 7” blue reassurance diamonds (blue blazes). The trails are non-motorized during snow months. Some of the trails are groomed and some are not (see map on web - http://parksandrecreation.idaho.gov). For winter use, the trails are generally rated More Difficult or Most Difficult for skiing under good snow conditions. There are some short steep sections with sharp turns requiring advanced skiing techniques.
Dogs are not allowed on any of the groomed Banner Ridge Park N’ Ski trails during the winter (Dec 1st - Apr 15th). Dogs are welcomed on the trails in the Whoop-Um-Up, Beaver Creek and Gold Fork areas. Dog owners are responsible for removing all of their dog droppings from the trails and to leash/control their dogs in the parking lots at all times.

Horseshoe Bend
Horseshoe Bend was originally settled as a gold miners’ staging area, as prospectors waited along the river for snows to thaw at the higher eleva tions. Gold had been discovered in 1862 in the Boise Basin mountains to the east, near Idaho City.
The settlement became known as Warrinersville, after a local sawmill operator. The name was changed to Horseshoe Bend in 1867 for its location at the horseshoe-shaped U-turn of the Payette River. After the gold rush quieted, the city became a pros perous ranching and logging community. The railroad, from Emmett up to Long Valley following the Payette River (its North Fork above Banks), was completed in 1913. However, the railroad is not currently in use.
