Welcome To Winter in Boise County,

the gateway to an authentic Central Idaho Mountains adventure. Come be energized by the brisk Winter days and nights. Shop for locally crafted items. Celebrate our pioneer past. Winter enthusiasts know the advantages of a frosty climate -- skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, elk feeding, snow tubing and sleigh riding are just a few of the winter adventures awaiting visitors. The area’s snow-covered forests are ideal winter destinations for outdoor activities from soft adventures to rugged expeditions.

Only One Hour From Boise SCENIC LOOP By travelling on three designated scenic byways, you can make a loop trip. From Boise, take Highway 55 to Banks. From there, take the Banks-Lowman Road to Lowman (be sure and stop in Garden Valley/Crouch). Then go west on Highway 21 through historic Idaho City. The loop is 120 miles.

Check out the Scenic Byway Loop! Great day trip for some outstanding winter wildlife viewing.

Welcome Boise County Winter

Boise County Guide -- Winter 2021-2022 Issue -- 3

Idaho City Just an hour drive from Boise, along scenic Highway 21, is the classic western town of Idaho City, a famous mining camp that has refused to die. In the 1860s Idaho City was one of the West’s largest gold rush mining towns with a staggering population of over 7,000 residents, and while the population has plummeted, the half-ghost-half-real town continues. During the American gold rush, more than $250,000,000 worth of precious metal was mined from the nearby Boise Basin, turning the frontier outpost into a bustling mining mecca with over three dozen saloons and two dozen law offices. While most pop-up towns of its ilk have disappeared to time, Idaho City still thrives more than 100 years after its founding and while the gold rush days are gone forever, much of the boom town flavor remains ready to be experienced. Today Idaho City is a mix of old and new. Modern convenience stores, eating establishments and lodging are available while exploring the old city. Its proximity to a variety of outdoor recreational activities further increases the many reasons to visit!

Another scenic route to take back to Boise is to head west from Idaho City to Placerville, and check out the charming town square. From there, head 17 miles east to Horseshoe Bend and back into Boise. Or for a real road trip, continue through Lowman, Stanley and SunValley before you head back to I-84.

Idaho City Idaho City Area Offers Outstanding Nordic Skiing Opportunities Idaho has a long snow season and high elevations, which translates into hundreds of miles of skate skiing, traditional skiing and snowshoeing opportunities. In addition to 300 miles of groomed ski trails you will find a few hundred more miles of marked trails that provide solitude and untouched powder. The Idaho City Area Yurt and Trail System is made up of 4 Park N’ Ski areas adjacent to Highway 21 between 18 and 25 miles northeast of Idaho City. It is approximately a two-hour drive from Boise. A permit is required to park in the Park N’ Ski parking lots between November 15th and April 30th. An annual pass is $25.00 and a temporary 3-day pass is $7.50. Passes are available for purchase on-line as well as in many of the local sport shops, the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation Headquarters building at 5657 Warm Springs Avenue in Boise and at Tom’s Service Station, Idaho City Grocery in Idaho City, and at the GV Chevron in Garden Valley. For updates on grooming status and trail conditions: Call 208- 514-2419. All trails in this system are marked by 5” x 7” blue reassurance diamonds (blue blazes). The trails are non-motorized during snow months. Some of the trails are groomed and some are not (see map on web - http://parksandrecreation.idaho.gov). For winter use, the trails are generally rated More Difficult or Most Difficult for skiing under good snow conditions. There are some short steep sections with sharp turns requiring advanced skiing techniques. Dogs are not allowed on any of the groomed Banner Ridge Park N’ Ski trails during the winter (Dec 1st - Apr 15th). Dogs are welcomed on the trails in the Whoop-Um-Up, Beaver Creek and Gold Fork areas. Dog owners are responsible for removing all of their dog droppings from the trails and to leash/control their dogs in the parking lots at all times.

The Beaver Creek Summit Park N’ Ski Parking Area Trail (Dogs allowed year-round)

Intermediate/Advanced. 3 miles. This un-groomed out-and-back trail is designed especially for backcountry Nordic folks, whether on skis or snowshoes. You’ll understand how it got its name after you make your way to the top of Stargaze Point (1.5 miles one way) where you’ll find a 360 degree view of the Boise National Forest that includes Pilots Peak, Wilson Butte, Sunset Peak, Rock Creek and Scott Mountain. At over 6,500 feet, it’sthe perfect Telemark skiing on many north and west facing slopes where there is deep powder most winter seasons. The Park N’ Ski parking lot is just before the snowplow turn around on the left side of Hwy 21, about 300 yards before the Beaver Creek Summit. Do not park in the snowplow turn around parking lot. From the parking lot ski/snowshoe along the shoulder of Hwy 21 for about 300 yards until you reach the highest point, Beaver Creek Summit. At the summit turn left on an old road bed marked with a sign post saying “Stargaze Trail.”

Idaho City The Gold Fork Park N’ Ski Parking Area Trails (Dogs allowed year-round)

Yurts in this area are the Skyline (east side) and Whispering Pines (west side) yurts. This area connects to the Banner Ridge Park N’ Ski Area by the Beaver and Ralph’s trails. It connects with the Whoop-Um-Up Park N’ Ski Area by the Beaver and Wagon trails. This area has an east and west side. The west side has the Gold Fork loop, Moose, Lodgepole and Double Dip trails. The east side has the Skyline, Summit, Ridge, Ralph’s and Beaver trails.

The Whoop-Um-Up Park N’ Ski Parking Area Trails

(Dogs allowed year-round) The yurt located in this area is the Rocky Ridge yurt. The trailhead in the winter is located in the Park N’ Ski parking lot. All trails are ungroomed in the winter. Snowmobilers share the parking lot but have separate trails, leaving little chance you will encounter a snowmobile on the trails. These trails are rated Easiest and More Difficult under good snow conditions. There are short, steep sections with sharp turns requiring advanced skiing techniques. Trails are on both sides of Highway 21. For cross-country skiers, there are five backcountry yurts operated by the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation near the Idaho City Park N’ Ski areas, northeast of Idaho City. They are about an hour from Boise. Idaho City Backcountry Yurts are Accessible in the winter by Nordic ski or snowshoeing. You can choose from six fabulous backcountry yurts: Banner Ridge, Elkhorn, Skyline, Whispering Pines, Rocky Ridge, Stargaze. Each yurt sleeps six people in a comfortably well-furnished atmosphere with high mountain views and no neighbors. In winter, backcountry yurts are accessed by a 2-3 mile ski or snowshoe trek. The backcountry yurts have plenty to offer every outdoor enthusiast at any level, whether beginner or experienced. For more information about cross-country skiing opportunities visit: www.parksandrecreation.idaho. gov.

Idaho City Idaho City Area Yurts For cross-country skiers, there are backcountry yurts operated by the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation near the Idaho City Park N’ Ski areas, northeast of Idaho City. They are about an hour from Boise. Idaho City Backcountry Yurts are Accessible in the winter by Nordic ski or snowshoeing. The Banner Ridge and Stargaze Yurts are the only two in the system that have been deemed safe for use this winter, following an initial U.S.D.A. Forest Service inventory of post Pioneer Fire-related impacts. Trail grooming will not take place this winter due to safety concerns on the trail system. For those wishing to make use of the parking lots to access the area in general and the two open yurts, Park N’ Ski Permits will still be required. Funds from the sale of Park N’ Ski Permits specifically support the contracted plowing of parking lots for winter access. Maps are available that identify areas within the region that are deemed safe for recreation and those still posted as closed. Those maps will be available for download on the IDPR https://parksandrecreation.idaho.gov/activities/yurts website and printed copies available at businesses in Idaho City.

Horseshoe Bend Horseshoe Bend was originally settled

as a gold miners’ staging area, as prospectors waited along the river for snows to thaw at the higher elevations. Gold had been discovered in 1862 in the Boise Basin mountains to the east, near Idaho City. The settlement became known as Warrinersville, after a local sawmill operator. The name was changed to Horseshoe Bend in 1867 for its location at the horseshoe-shaped U-turn of the Payette River. After the gold rush quieted, the city became a prosperous ranching and logging community. The railroad, from Emmett up to Long Valley following the Payette River (its North Fork above Banks), was completed in 1913. However, the railroad is not currently in use. The town’s current culture is a blend of ranching and is a growing bedroom community for Boise.

Lowman HOT SPRINGS - Up the Scenic Byway to the LOWMAN AREA

K

irkham Hot Springs, located near the Boise National Forest campground of the same name, features somewhat shallow rock pools (unimproved) with sand/rock bottoms next to the river. The multiple hot waterfalls are quite a sight! Both the pools and hot waterfalls can be seen from a large pullout off highway 21 on the west side of the campground.

Kirkham additionally serves as an interpretive site for geothermal activity. There is a trail that winds through the seeps and sources which continuously provide the hot springs pools with fresh mineral water. There are signs along the way that describe the hot springs and area history.

B

onneville Hot Springs, is a .25 mile hike and is accessible from the campground of the same name located just off highway 21 north of Lowman. Bonneville features user built rock pools with sand/silt bottoms and a private soak shack that houses a bathtub.
