Take the Scenic Byway Loop, or explore some of the backroads that stretch between the towns throughout the County. This barn can be seen on the Alder Creek road between Garden Valley and Idaho City.

Area Attractions Just an hour drive from Boise, along scenic Highway 21, is the classic western town of Idaho City, a famous mining camp that has refused to die and instead has prospered into the thriving community that it is today. During its early years it was known as Bannock City or West Bannock to differentiate between Bannock, Montana, since at that time both towns were in Idaho Territory. In 1863, Idaho City had a propulation of six thousand and was being seriously considered for the territorial capital. It lost out, however, and in 1864 the territorial capital was moved to Boise City from Lewinston. With the printing of The Boise News in 1863, Idaho City could at least boast it had a newspaper a year earlier than Boise. The Boise News was later changed to The Idaho World.

The BoCo Sluice Box property is the site of the original Sluice Box, said to be “the most photographed building in Idaho!” This property is under new ownership, the main building is reopened as the antique and second hand store it always was. The original contents are now available to the public after having been locked up for 10-15 years! New items and wonders are added on a regular basis, always something new and delightful. Also on the property is the little yellow house, now fondly known as The Attic. After years of neglect, The Attic has been transformed into a charming cottage. Here you will find one of a kind antiques, blingy treasures and pieces of artwork by Ginger Fields. Recently added to the property is another intriguing business, The Back Door: Inside and out you will find an array of antiques and curiosities with a focus on the rustic and primitive.

Area Attractions Horseshoe Bend is the largest city in rural Boise County, in the southwest-

ern part of Idaho. The town is named for its location at the horseshoe-shaped U-turn of the Payette River, whose flow direction changes from south to north before heading west to the Black Canyon Reservoir.

The town bosts plenty of nearby activities including whitewater rafting, horseback riding, train rides, mountain biking, zip lining and dining.

Area Attractions Hot Springs in the Lowman & Grandjean Areas KIRKHAM HOT SPRINGS: Located along the South Fork of the Payette River three miles east of the Lowman Ranger Station on Highway 21. Trailhead located in campground. Hot springs sit on the river’s edge. There is a Parking Fee! BONNEVILLE HOT SPRINGS: Located on Warm Springs Creek, 18 miles east of the Lowman R.S. on Hwy 21. Trailhead is located in the campground. Hot springs are 1/4 mile hike away. Site includes one small bathhouse with an individual tub. There is a Parking Fee! PINE FLATS

Hot dips and cliffside showers near a family campground on the South Fork of the Payette River 5 miles west of Lowman. Pine Flats Campground is located below the Banks-Lowman Rd. 5.7 miles west of Lowman and 28 miles east of Banks. Look for the hottest pools on paths that wind up the backside of a cliff, and cooler soaks at the bottom. A cascade pouring over a cliff delineates one side of a pool hidden 20 feet above the river. Hot! Cooler pools at the bottom collect the runoff, leading to a large swimming hole at the river’s edge.

SACAJAWEA HOT SPRINGS: On the South Fork of the Payette near Grandjean. 22 miles east of Lowman R.S. on Hwy 21, turn off to the right on a gravel road, #524 Grandjean Rd. Travel approximately 4.6 miles to the Wapiti Ck. junction and continue .6 miles beyond. Hot springs are on the right hand side of the road. Hot springs are flooded during spring runoff. Area Attractions Garden Valley • Crouch The community is surrounded in all directions by mountain peaks -- some over 7,000 feet -- Two river systems carve valleys that sustain its inhabitants, wildlife, stock and horses. In 1934 a new post office established the identity of Crouch, now one of the commercial districts for Garden Valley. The town was named after Billy Crouch, a miner who homesteaded near the confluence of the Middle and South Fork Rivers. In the 1920s, Crouch donated property for a new community hall in Garden Valley. Population -- 2,000 + ??? Elevation -- 3,200 ft.
