To Spring in Boise County, the gateway to an authentic Central Idaho Mountains adventure. The grass is greening up and beckoning the wildlife from the surrounding mountains. A true delight for those that venture along the roads, trails and waterways within the County.
WILDLIFE VIEWING
Wildlife is abundant for viewing this time of year. Deer and elk will remain in the area into April when grasses begin growing and will begin migrating back to higher elevations as the snowline recedes. Late afternoon hours are best times for visitors to view wildlife; however, many will be visible at any hour.
Male (buck) deer will have shed their antlers by this time of year.
Male (bull) elk may still have their antlers, as they generally lose them in late March.
By travelling on three designated scenic byways, you can make a loop trip. From Boise, take Highway 55 to Lowman (be sure and stop in Garden Valley/Crouch). Then go west on Highway 21 through historic
Idaho City. The loop is 120 miles.
Idaho City’s famous Chili Cookoff is held annually in March.
HOT SPRINGS
Early spring is the perfect time to enjoy one of several unimproved hot springs that dot the area. The local merchants, USFS Ranger Stations, and the local Chamber of Commerces can provide more information. Additionally, there are several improved resort hot springs facilities, including Terrace Lakes, Silver Creek Plunge, and The Springs at Idaho City.
Floyd was the first born to Fred and Zell Audette on March 30th, 1925 in Duluth, Minnesota. (His mother’s maiden name was Hovis.) He grew up on his father’s small chicken farm in Burnett, Minnesota, during the Great Depression with four other siblings. His only brother, Bill Audette, came next; then his twin sisters, Rosella and Marcella; then his youngest sister, Shirley.
He was predeceased by all in that family except his sister, Marcella, who lives as a widow in the Vancouver, Washington area at the time of this writing.
Floyd married Claire Audrey Brown in June of 1946 and soon moved to Boise, Idaho. Floyd and Claire raised two children in Boise. Their son, Stanley F. Audette, was born April 10th, 1947; and their daughter, Marilyn L. Audette, was born June 17th, 1948. Both children live in the area at the time of this writing.
His son brought 2 grandchildren into this world, followed by 2 great grandchildren and 2 great, great grandchildren. His daughter brought 5 grandchildren into the family, followed by 10 great grandchildren and 7 great, great grandchildren. All-in-all Floyd and Claire are responsible for adding 30 heirs to the family tree.
Sadly, in November 1989, his sweetheart of 43 years passed away due to cancer. And although he remarried a few years later, that marriage did not bring happiness to either him or his second wife. It ended just a few years after it began and Floyd was again alone in a rather large house he had built for his second wife. As he grew older, he invited his niece, Konnie Jesmer (daughter of his wife’s older sister, Marjorie), who grew up in Seattle, Washington, to help him with the house and his business. Therefore, he had wonderful companionship during the last 14 years or so of his life in the mountains.

However, as his health inevitably declined due to age, Konnie was no longer able to care for him by herself in his home in the mountains. Therefore, the family was able to move him into an elder care home in Meridian, Idaho, under the loving care of Gilbert Bravo and Tammy Walmer, and with the help of Gilbert’s aunt, Janie.
Floyd peacefully passed away in his bed in the elder care home by natural causes early in the morning of Sunday, February 9th, 2025 at the age of 99. (He was just 49 days short of being 100 years old.)
At his request, he will be cremated and his ashes will be spread by his family onto the earth where his life-long sweetheart’s ashes were previously spread in a similar ceremony and celebration of life at the Fairview Cemetery on the north slope of War Eagle Mountain east of Silver City in the Owyhee Mountains of Idaho where Claire so loved the view. However, this ceremony won’t be scheduled until late June or early July, 2025, due to the timeline of melting snow banks.
Horseshoe Bend
Horseshoe Bend was originally settled as a gold miners’ staging area, as prospectors waited along the river for snows to thaw at the higher elevations. Gold had been discovered in 1862 in the Boise Basin mountains to the east, near Idaho City. The settlement became known as Warrinersville, after a local sawmill operator. The name was changed to Horseshoe Bend in 1867 for its location at the horseshoe-shaped U-turn of the Payette River.
After the gold rush quieted, the city became a prosperous ranching and logging community. The railroad, from Emmett up to Long Valley following the Payette River (its North Fork above Banks), was completed in 1913. However, the railroad is not currently in use.
The town’s current culture is a blend of ranching and is a growing bedroom community for Boise.
Lowman
Kirkham Hot Springs
Kirkham Hot Springs is located next to the South Fork Payette River just east of Lowman, Idaho, along State Highway 21 at an elevation of 4,000 feet. Visitors enjoy soaking in popular Kirkham Hot Springs on the banks of the river and exploring the scenic Kirkham Ridge Trail.
Kirkham Hot Springs is open for DAY USE ONLY from 7:00 am to 9:00 pm and NO OVERNIGHT CAMPING. Visitors will approach a locked gate, then cross the bridge to enter the site.
Natural Features:
The area offers little shade, though a few Ponderosa pines are scattered throughout the site. The site can be very hot and sunny during the summer. Wildflowers dot the landscape.
Recreation:
Kirkham Hot Springs is located at the river’s edge. A trail leads down to the soaking pools and small steaming waterfalls. Take caution walking on rock surfaces near the hot springs. They are uneven and can be slick when wet.
Pets are welcome. Please keep them leashed at all times and away from the hot spring pools and runoff areas.
The South Fork Payette River offers whitewater rafting, kayaking and trout fishing. The Deadwood and Danskin River Access areas are nearby on the road to Garden Valley. Kirkham Ridge Trail is one of the Lowman Ranger District’s premier trails. It begins less than 1/4-mile away and stretches through beautiful country for 35 miles, connecting with many other trails in the area. It is open to hiking, mountain biking and horses. Sections of the trail are open seasonally to off-road vehicles.
