Welcome To Spring in Boise County,

the gateway to an authentic Central Idaho Mountains adventure. The grass is greening up and beckoning the wildlife from the surrounding mountains. A true delight for those that venture along the roads, trails and waterways within the County.

WILDLIFE VIEWING Wildlife is abundant for viewing this time of year. Deer and elk will remain in the area into April when grasses begin growing and will begin migrating back to higher elevations as the snowline recedes. Late afternoon hours are best times for visitors to view wildlife; however, many will be visible at any hour. Male (buck) deer will have shed their antlers by this time of year. Male (bull) elk may still have their antlers, as they generally lose them in late March.

Eagles may also be spotted by wildlife enthusiasts. The Bald Eagle population in the County is centered along the Payette River system where they feed on whitefish in the river and on winter kill big game animals. Cover Photo Courtesy Francisco Lozano

By travelling on three designated scenic byways, you can make a loop trip. From Boise, take Highway 55 through Horseshoe Bend, Banks, Garden Valley/Crouch to Lowman. Then go west on Highway 21 through historic Idaho City. The loop is 120 miles.

Idaho City Just an hour drive from Boise, along scenic Highway 21, is the classic western town of Idaho City, a famous mining camp that has refused to die.

In the 1860s Idaho City was one of the West’s largest gold rush mining towns with a staggering population of over 7,000 residents, and while the population has plummeted, the half-ghost-half-real town continues.

During the American gold rush, more than $250,000,000 worth of precious metal was mined from the nearby Boise Basin, turning the frontier outpost into a bustling mining mecca with over three dozen saloons and two dozen law offices. While most pop-up towns of its ilk have disappeared to time, Idaho City still thrives more than 100 years after its founding and while the gold rush days are gone forever, much of the boom town flavor remains ready to be experienced. Today Idaho City is a mix of old and new. Modern convenience stores, eating establishments and lodging are available while exploring the old city. Its proximity to a variety of outdoor recreational activities further increases the many reasons to visit!

Idaho City Visitor Center off of Hwy 21.

Another scenic route to take back to Boise is to head west from Idaho City to Placerville, and check out the charming town square. From there, head 17 miles east to Horseshoe Bend and back into Boise. Or for a real road trip, continue through Lowman, Stanley and SunValley before you head back to I-84.

Idaho City Early Spring is an excellent time to hit the road. Wildlife is stirring, green is taking over the hills as the snow withdraws. Three Scenic Byways cross portions of Boise County, along with a myriad of historical highway markers that add to the journey. Make a day or two of it with a tour through the countryside and small towns and take in some of the area’s history.

Begin the tour heading north east along Warm Springs Avenue out of Boise on State Hwy 21. This route skirts portions of the Old Oregon Trail, where the first historical markers on this Highway will appear. Left: Diversion Dam for the New York Canal along Hwy 21 north east of Boise.

Beaver Dick was born in England as Richard Leigh. He came west as a trapper, but the real fur trade was already over. So he married a Shoshoni woman and stayed in the West as a popular outfitter and guide, serving on the famous Hayden surveying party in 1872. Leigh Lake in Grand Teton National Park is named for him, and Jenny Lake named for his first wife. A picturesqe character, he was widely known and liked.

Boise County Guide -- March - April 2022 21

Horseshoe Bend Horseshoe Bend was originally settled

as a gold miners’ staging area, as prospectors waited along the river for snows to thaw at the higher elevations. Gold had been discovered in 1862 in the Boise Basin mountains to the east, near Idaho City. The settlement became known as Warrinersville, after a local sawmill operator. The name was changed to Horseshoe Bend in 1867 for its location at the horseshoe-shaped U-turn of the Payette River. After the gold rush quieted, the city became a prosperous ranching and logging community. The railroad, from Emmett up to Long Valley following the Payette River (its North Fork above Banks), was completed in 1913. However, the railroad is not currently in use. The town’s current culture is a blend of ranching and is a growing bedroom community for Boise.

Garden Valley - Area Attractions Wildlife Canyon Scenic Byway and Recreational Drives: The Garden Valley area is nestled along the Wildlife Canyon Scenic Byway, hosting exceptional wildlife viewing, hot springs and picturesque mountain scenery. This is an Idaho road winding through country so splendid that it has achieved a special status. The road passes through breathtaking scenery, historic places, and intriguing landscapes. And though it offers incomparable glimpses of wilderness, it is easily and safely traveled by most vehicles.

The beauty of the South Fork of the Payette River Canyon, the power of the river, and the abundance of wildlife will create lifelong memories. Some featured points along the Byway, include: Staircase Rapids -- one of the most famous along the South Fork. Crouch -- Historic old city north of the Byway. Pioneer Cemetery -- brings reminders of days long past of the rich heritage of the area.

Alder Creek Bridge -- homesite of artist Charles Ostner. Grimes Pass Dam -- powered mining dredges in the Boise Basin. Danskin Station -- big game viewing, info and whitewater access. Gallagher Flat -- Original Civilian Conservation Corps camp foundations. Big Falls -- Drop in the river of 40 feet --requiring portage for boaters. Pine Flats -- Hot springs for plants, animals and people! Deadwood Campground -- Campsite was occupied as early as AD 534.

Along the river banks watch for eagles, osprey, herons, Canadian geese, wild turkeys, elk, deer, fox, and sometimes even a black bear. The area is known for the winter migrations of large herds of elk and deer. Boise County Guide -- March - April 2022 31

Garden Valley - Area Attractions Hot Springs -- Middle Fork of the Payette River -- CAUTION -- Check on whether 1 • Rocky Canyon

Middle Fork Road is open in EARLY SPRING before heading up to Boiling Springs Area!

12.5 miles from the intersection of Forest Road 698 (Middle Fork Rd.) and Hwy 17. Go 1.5 mi. past Hardscrabble Campground. Park in a pullout on your left. You’ll have to wade the river, which could be dangerous during high water. The spring emerges from the steep hillside near the mouth of Rocky Canyon. Bathers have chiseled out a family-size soaking pool well up the bank. A PVC pipe in the dam provides a great shower for the slightly cooler pool immediately below.

2 • Fire Crew

15 miles from the intersection of Forest Road 698 (Middle Fork Rd.) and Hwy 17. (2.5 miles past Rocky Canyon Hot Spring) to a junction at Trail Creek Campground. Take the left fork for .3 miles. Bear left on a rough spur ending at the river. A loop encircles an undeveloped camping area. The pools are out on a gravel bar to your right. The spring is on the river’s edge, but, on the near side. No river crossing necessary. Can get hot as the river drops -- some adjusting may be necessary!

Miles

23 miles from the intersection of Forest Road 698 (Middle Fork Rd.) and Hwy 17, to the road-end campground and trailhead. Stroll .3 miles north on the trail to find the springs flowing down a bank beside a couple of cabins. The cabins, formerly a Forest Service guard station, are now rented to the public for recreational use. Please ask permission before entering and try to avoid the cabin area as much as possible. Steaming water emerges at 188 degrees from many fissures in a cliff just beyond the cabins, and a broad cascade streams down the hillside. One spring flows through a shallow soaking pool or two at the base. The water cools as it runs through a ditch across a wide meadow. A few rock-lined pools at the river’s edge are usually filled on weekends with kids from the nearby campground.

Garden Valley - Area Attractions 4 & 5 • Moondipper - Pine Burl

Take your choice of trails from Boiling Springs upriver. Two separate springs flow down the banks of a creek just above the river into a pair of scenic soakers spaced 50 yards apart along the tree-studded canyon. Both get swamped during high water, so fall is an ideal time go visit these spots. One trail, steep and slippery in spots, hugs the west side of the river all the way. This is the safer route during high water. The Middle Fork Trail is more direct, but you’ll have to ford several times in the 2-mile hike upstream. When you reach Dash Creek, the first side stream on the west side, you’ll find Moondipper 30 yards up the creek against a rocky bank. The large, sandy-bottomed pool can hold several happy soakers and offers a great view up the canyon. Pine Burl, a gem tucked out of sight a few bends up the creek, has a pool roughly 7 to 8 feet in diameter. The name, once inscribed on a small masonry dam at the downstream end, has eroded away, but the inspiration for it still sits up the hill on the north side. The spring perks up through the sandy bottom, and if the water gets too hot, you can shift the rocks at the other end to let creek water trickle in.

The pool at Pineburl Hot Spring.

6 • Groundhog

1.3 miles beyond Moondipper and Pine Burl, there is little foot traffic, and the way is pretty brushy. Watch for Ground Hog Creek on the west bank shortly before the 8th ford of the river. Right after this crossing, the river makes a horseshoe bend to the right. Cross the river one last time to find the springs in the center of the curve on the east bank. Pool gets little use, so be prepared to move some rocks! 7 • Bull Creek Take Silver Creek Trail vs. Middle Fork. Drop down the far side of Silver Creek Summit into Bull Creek. Take Bull Creek Trail. Turn left and follow it 2.7 miles downstream above the north bank of Bull Creek. The trail drops steeply to a bridge over a small stream, then reaches another with no bridge. Look 30 feet uphill and climb up to reach the springs on a granite bluff overlooking the canyon. REMOTE and can get hot!

Garden Valley - Area Attractions The Payette River is famous for its

To the east of Banks, the South

whitewater. Experts call the North Fork Class V run one of the most challenging river reaches in North America, if not the world. Kayaking on the lower North Fork from Smith’s Ferry to Banks is world-class, easily viewed from state highway 55, which closely hugs its bank, primarily on the west side.

Fork’s Canyon, west of Lowman, is a challenging Class IV run for rafting. Along this trip is a 40-foot Class VI waterfall (Big Falls), which is portaged. The North Fork and South Fork merge at Banks to form the Payette River (main), providing a float trip with numerous Class III rapids. The highway on this lower stretch of the river is on the east bank.

The lower North Fork narrows and drops 1700 feet in the 16 miles above Banks, providing nearly endless Class V rapids (see International Scale of River Difficulty). The North Fork’s flow rate is controlled through the Cascade Dam, completed in 1948, providing relatively warm water from the shallow Cascade Reservoir.

A number of local outfitters are available to book trips throughout the spring and summer months.
