Only One Hour From Boise By travelling on three designated scenic byways, you can make a loop trip. From Boise, take Highway 55 to Lowman (be sure and stop in Garden Valley/Crouch). Then go west on Highway 21 through historic Idaho City. The loop is 120 miles.

Idaho City Just an hour drive from Boise, along scenic Highway 21, is the classic western town of Idaho City, which was for a period of time in the 1860s, the largest city in the Northwest.

It was in the Boise Basin, which surrounds present day Idaho City, that gold was first discovered in southern Idaho, and over the next twenty years or so, more than $250,000,000 worth of the precious metal was taken from the basin. Boise County also accounted for much of the early logging activity in Southern Idaho. The wealth produced by mining and logging operations fueled the development of the area well into the twentieth century.

Unlkie many former mining towns, however, when the gold ran out and the population shrank, Idaho City refused to die.

Today, it is both a thriving community and a living example of the benefits of historical preservation. The oldest buildings in the town date from the 1800s. Hiking trails and campgrounds are plentiful and are criss crossed by plentiful mountain streams.

Go for the Drive.....Stay for the Experience Today Idaho City is a mix of old and new. Modern convenience stores, eating establishments and lodging are available while exploring the old city. Its proximity to a variety of outdoor recreational activities further increases the many reasons to visit!

Idaho City The Idaho City Ranger District of the Boise National Forest provides an incredibly variable range of country to explore and campgrounds to visit. There are several campgrounds recommended that are in close proximity to Idaho City and an easy drive from Boise.

campgrounds such as Grayback Gulch and Edna Creek.

TEN MILE

Ten Mile is small campground, a quick 48 mile drive from Boise, Idaho, along State Highway 21.

The campground is the one of three campgrounds (Bad Bear and Hayfork), a few miles past the Historic town of Idaho City. This area is known for its beautiful old forest of ponderosa pine. Wildflowers abound in the summer months.

There are fishing opportunities in Mores Creek and some campsites are very near the creek. No reservations are necessary. This is a first come, first serve campground. 15 sites. $15 each.

BAD BEAR

This campground contains 5 sites that can accommodate up to 6 people each, and 1 site that can accommodate 12. Picnic tables, a BBQ grill, and fire ring with benches are provided. The site is in an open area with shade. Vault toilets and garbage service are provided. Parking spurs are paved. Due to its proximity to the highway, some noise from passing traffic is to be expected. $15 each (6 person), $30 (12 person site).

HAYFORK

Hayfork is a GROUP ONLY Campground, located off Hwy 21, 12 miles northeast of Idaho City. The campground provides one large-group campsite for reservation. It can accommodate up to 50 people and is a great location for family reunions or small weddings. The site is equipped with multiple tables, a grill and a campfire circle with benches.Vault toilets, drinking water and trash collection are provided. Parking spurs are gravel. Due to the campground’s proximity to the highway, some noise from passing traffic is to be expected. $100 night.

Lowman HOT SPRINGS - Up the Scenic Byway to the LOWMAN AREA

K

irkham Hot Springs, located near the Boise National Forest campground of the same name, features somewhat shallow rock pools (unimproved) with sand/rock bottoms next to the river. The multiple hot waterfalls are quite a sight! Both the pools and hot waterfalls can be seen from a large pullout off highway 21 on the west side of the campground.

Kirkham additionally serves as an interpretive site for geothermal activity. There is a trail that winds through the seeps and sources which continuously provide the hot springs pools with fresh mineral water. There are signs along the way that describe the hot springs and area history.

onneville Hot Springs, is a .25 mile hike and is accessible from the campground of the same name located just off highway 21 north of Lowman. Bonneville features user built rock pools with sand/silt bottoms and a private soak shack that houses a bathtub.

Lowman Lowman is located along the eastern edge of the Wildlife Canyon Scenic Byway, 40

miles east of Banks. The traveler will marvel at the deep canyon created by the powerful Payette River. Steep canyon walls provide shelter for wildlife throughout the area. Waterfalls drop through narrow canyon walls offering some spectacular views of nature. All along the route are USFS campgrounds, several of which have natural hot springs to soak in. These campgrounds are well maintained and accessible to all travelers. After enjoying the wildlife and scenery you can enjoy a meal in Lowman. Area restaurants and businesses offer all who venture by a place to relax and enjoy the day.

Garden Valley - Area Attractions There are many year-round recreation opportunities within the Garden Valley area of the Boise National Forest. Forest visitors will find over 70 campgrounds within the entire forest, and picnic areas providing a variety of recreation experiences. Several of the campgrounds provide access for the physically challenged.

Popular Camping Picnic Sites near Garden Valley have tables, grills and fire pits.

BOILING SPRINGS

Located north of Garden Valley along the Middle Fork of the Payette River, each unit has parking and can accommodate small to medium size RVs up to 22 feet. Artesian drinking water is available with one hydrant. One vault toilet.

HARDSCRABBLE

North of Garden Valley along the Middle Fork of the Payette River, this site has three units with paved parking which can accommodate small to medium size RVs up to 24 feet. No drinking water available.

TIE CREEK

Units in this campground, located nine miles north of Garden Valley, can accommodate small to medium size RVs up to 16 feet. Drinking water is supplied from a well with a hand pump. One vault toilet. A GREAT “put-in” spot for tubing and rafting the Middle Fork!

TRAIL CREEK

Located 17 miles north of Garden Valley on the Middle Fork of the Payette River, the campground can accommodate RVs up to 22 feet. Two vault toilets. No drinking water is available.

SILVER CREEK

This campground was reconstructed in 2010 and now offers paved roads and paved parking spurs, drinking water and accessible vault toilets. Several single and double campsites are available, all of which are accessible. Each site is equipped with a tent pad, picnic and utility tables and a campfire ring.

Garden Valley - Area Attractions PINE FLATS

This campground is located six miles downriver from Lowman on the Banks-Lowman Road.

Facilities include two double unit toilets, concrete grills, fire pits, pedestal grills and three hand water pumps. Garbage service is provided.

Silver Creek Campground.

HOT SPRINGS

Located along the Banks-Lowman Road, next to the South Fork of the Payette River, the campground is named for the nearby hot springs and is covered by old growth ponderosa pine. Popular with boaters, the units have paved parking and can accommodate medium to large size RVs up to 35 feet. All units have tables, grills and fire pits.

Group sites have large serving tables with large grills. All group units and units 6-8 are wheelchair accessible. Two vault type toilets and the drinking water system are wheelchair accessible with paved paths. Drinking water is available from a deep well pressurized water system with four hydrants.

The campground is shaded by a heavy stand of ponderosa pine and natural hot springs are located 1/2 mile down river. CAUTION: Some of the water is very hot and can burn.

Nude bathing and soap are prohibited.

For those who want solitude, the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness has lots of it, as do other undeveloped areas throughout the Forest. In addition, portions of the Sawtooth Wilderness, the Sawtooth National Recreation Area and the Middle Fork of the Salmon River, a part of the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System, are easily accessed from a number of Boise National Forest campgrounds and trailheads. These rugged areas are famous for their spectacular scenery, general or dispersed recreation, hunting, fishing, rafting, hiking or riding horseback.

This campground is part of the National Reservation System. There are 3 group units available.

Units 1 & 2 have a capacity for 200-300 people and unit 3 has a capacity for 40 people. They can be reserved by calling 1-877-444-6777.
