It’sbeen abusy six weeks forthe team of GTN’sGreatest ChristmasAwards judges and we’renearlythere.

By Christmas Eve we willhavevisited and met over130 garden centreChristmas teams and around 10,000 customers willhavehad theirsay as to who theythink areThe Greatest at Christmas 2025

Our judging visits aresuch an uplifting experience, seeing great Christmas retailing and feeling the enthusiasm of the teams during their busiest weeks of the year hasbeen so energising No wonder customers love shopping anddining at garden centres in the run up to Christmas. Given the economic uncertainty as we went into

Christmas it has been interestingtohearthat most centresare up considerably on Christmas trading this year and that it hasbeen higher priced items that have flownout of the doors.

Nowthe judges have the task of reviewing allthe photos taken andpooling their findings so that the winners can be chosenand then presented during Spring Fair on Monday2nd February. This year’s Awards presentations will be in the Glee at Spring Fair area at 1:00pm, we look forwardtoseeing you there.

Handy has been aname in thegarden machinerysector since1938 and today is one of the UK’s largest independent manufacturers, supplying specialist dealers, national retailersand garden centres with its ownand other marketbrands.

Apurpose-built 70,000ft Swindon siteisnow home to morethan 45 full-time staff and it’s herethat Handy has developed and expanded its ownmachinerybrands including Webb,The Handy and QGarden. And,asthe UK-appointed distributor for the Greenworks brand of cordlessequipment, it is at the forefront of leading batterytechnology.

Afamily-owned British business, Handy, as it is today,started life in 1970’swhen Derek Belcher,along-standingemployeeofGJHandy, purchased thebusiness. The relocation to Hobley, Swindon, placed the company next

to agarden centre, creating opportunities to supportothergarden retailers.

By theearly 2000s, Handy wassupplying major nationalretailers with itsown brands and expanding itsrangebydeveloping new productsand sourcing bulk production from theFar East. Today,Derek’s son Simon Belcher serves as Chairman, withSteve Bartlett as Managing Director and Mark MoseleyasSales andMarketing Director,leading the senior team from Handy’s impressiveDorcan headquarters and warehouse.

“We’ll take care of everything,” saysMark Moseley, Sales andMarketing Director aboutthe role of Handy as atrade partner andcategory captain. “Ifyou want Webb,The Handy or Flymo or Greenworkswe’ve got the entirecategoryyoudon’tneed to worry.’

Webb’s growth story

When Mark first joined Handy in 2015,Webb accountedfor around 6% shareofHandy’s turnoverwith the Handy brandat16%.Handy acquired the Webb brandin2011, attracted to its reputation for British heritage andquality, reliability,practicalperformanceand customer recognition.Mark could see investment in the company’s ownbrands, whilestill representing other brands, wasthe wayforward

“One of the biggest limitations of supplying retailers with products from brand partners is thatyou areinthe hands of theirstrategies, so

sales can rise and fall depending on their plans,”explains Mark. The initial aim wastoincrease the turnover ofown brandsto50% -today it sits at around 85%. “Today we area sustainable, profitable businesswhere we areincontrol of ourown destiny,” he adds.

Anthony Wadley, Marketing Manager,adds that Handy has grownthe Webb brand with major financial investments. “We’ve raised the profile of Webb and put investment into‘howto’ gardening videos, lifestyle photoshoots and packaging.”

Of allthe brands Handy workswith, Mark sees the greatest opportunity for garden centres inits ownWebb range. Today,Webb is Handy’s leading brand, accounting for55% of total revenue “In the early days it could be challenging to get the brandlisted, but over time our ranges have gained real traction and Webb has grown,”says Mark. “Wenow find retailers asking for Webb first.”

This is only set to increase as newlines such as cordlessmachines under the Webb Eco banner launched this year,and the powerful Webb X-Seriesintroduced next year,appeal to garden centrecustomers. Backed up by investments in marketing and retailer support, Mark believes Webb is the wayforward for garden retailers.

The cordlesstransition

Although petrol machines still account fora quarterofthe company’s turnover, thereis adefiniteshift towards cordlesspower.“The petrol market has actually been fairly static,” says Mark,“but wherecustomers arebuying petrol machineshas changeddramatically.Most sales noware coming from online. It seems retailers don’twant to put as many petrol machines in their rangebecause they arenot seen as environmentally friendly.”

Experienced garden machinerystaff arealso nowfew and far between meaning centres don’thaveago-tomember on the team. The daysofhaving astand-alone garden machinery department havealso gone which is whereHandy

can enable retailerstocontinue to offer the rangeofproductscustomers expect to see at their localgarden centre.

Cordless machinerybrings many advantages andistransforming howretailers buildtheir ranges. Forthe older demographic it represents performance, convenienceand ease of use through machines being lightweight. Handy has its batteriesmade by one of the largest engine manufacturers in the world, and next year is looking to include 4ah batteries with all X-Series machines. Plus, it will haveaUSB charging option, doing away with the cumbersome batterycharger,and allowing batteriestobeused as backup powerfor phones and laptops.

Another plus is pricing.Mark nowsays cordlessmachines arepriced on par with petrolasthe cost of batteries has come down enormously “It used to be that customers paid 20-30% morefor cordlessbut nowwe candeliverthem at the same price as apetrol mower. And the batteryis includedinthe price.”

Investing in infrastructure

Behind the product success sits major

investment in infrastructure and marketing, designed to make life easier for tradepartners.

To meet seasonal peaks and improve fulfilment speed, Handy hasincreased itswarehousing capacitytoalmost 100k squaremeters. This is an expansion of around athirdand when full,by the end ofthis year,itwillhold up to £7mworth of stock.

It hasalsotransformed digitally with investment in b2b and trade customer websites whichnow link smoothly to Handy’s newMaster Product Database. This allows retailerstoeasily order online, viewtrade pricing,stock levels, and access promotions in real time.

As well as newpoint of sale for theshopfloor anddisplays which havebeen invested to the tune of morethan £200,000,Handy has also introduced scheduled trade campaigns, quantity discounts, and faster onboarding of newproducts. “Wehave 60 pricereductions planned acrossthe Webb andHandy ranges in 2026 and 30 promotions in February, March and April,” says Mark.

“Plus, we arealso adding value for the customer by offeringfreeJohnsons Lawn Seed and Grass Gains Lawn Bulk products withthe purchase of a lawn mowerorscarifier,” adds Anthony

Looking ahead to 2026

Next year is allaboutsmartergrowth, stronger digitalpresence,and even closer trade collaboration. But it is also workingbeyond this to bring its productsand messaging to amuch wider audience of home gardeners through joined-up campaigns thatlink marketing, ecommerce,and trade performance

Webb brandawarenesswill be amajor focus, buildingvisibility through influencer partnerships, PR,and trusted gardeningadvice through one of the company’s ambassadors Adam Woolcott. He remains akey part of this vision,helping communicate practical tips andauthentic advice thatgoes beyond lawns to make gardening feel achievablefor everyone.

Five finalists arethrough to the last stage of theWestland RisingStarsprogramme with projects and ideas thathavebeen bought to lifeonthe shop floor.

With the 2026 GCA Conferencein their sights, the fivefinalists of this year’s Westland Rising Stars programme aretweakingprojects and getting ready for their on-stage presentations. Theywere chosen from aDragon’sDen style event at Bell Plantation in October,partofthe programme which began in April,with ateamof10takingpart from gardencentres acrossthe country.

“Their projectsdemonstratedwhatatalented group of individuals theyare,” says Gordon Emslie, Project Mentor.“They have allfaced many challengesespecially around managing time during averybusy seasonand haveshown greatdetermination in getting theirproject delivered when facingadversity.Ithas beena proud and humbling experience formeastheir mentor to work with all this year’s candidates.”

This year’s cohort have chosen projects which resonatewithmanyoftoday’s eco-conscious gardeners.Fromencouraging wildlifeand bees into thegardenusing soft andhardlandscaping, using café coffee groundsand water sustainability,their projectsshowthatgarden centreshavethe products andexpertadviceto make gardens environmental havens

TheRisingStars programmeisa collaborationbetween theGarden Centre Association andsponsored by Westland Horticulture. It helpsnurturepotential retail stars of thefuturebysupporting them to createshopfloormarketingand promotions on themes they each feel strongly about.

My projectisaresult of the number of houses being built around East Cambridgeshire and Norfolk.Asmoreare built many habitats for plants and wildlife arebeing removedor destroyed. After having my 20sqm wildlifefriendly garden display on show, sales of perennials, lavender and shrubs increased compared to last year.Icreated my ownleaflets forcustomersto take home to theycould understand why Imade thegardeninthe first place andoffer ideas of what plants to putwhere. I’m also planninga booklet to include agardendesign andtoshow howmuch the plants cost, howbig theygrowand what position theypreferiefull sun orshade.

• Wildlife Gardening

My project will encourage theimplementation of wildlife gardening and highlight its importanceespeciallyinthe declining populations. This willentailfourseasons of gardening guidancetobenefit avariety of different wildlife at crucialtimes of the year This project is inspired by marrying the benefits of gardeningfor ourselves as well as the environment and futureofour wildlifeinthe most efficient and sustainable ways possible. Iwill be basing this project around my creation of awildlife calendar/planner that I hope will educatecustomersonthe timingof wildlife needs throughout theyearaswellas inspirecustomers on the executionof providing for those needswithin their owngarden.

Icreated andsoldabundle withinmystore which allowedcustomers to createtheirown seasonally adjusted hangingbasket. Forspring/ summerthe selectionleanttowards pollinators ensuringweare helping wildlife. Forautumn/ winter,itfocuses more on expandingcolour andinterestfor anyoutdoor area. Theexample basketsI created allowed customers to seea finishedproduct whilethe bundlesgivethe joy of creating theirown

Through theRisingStars project,Ihavelearnt much about theindustryand about myself.I have put myself in positions Iwouldn’t have previously, like public speakingand presenting my ownwork. Theproject hasresulted in more than 600 instagram viewsand been positive in engagingwithcustomers.

• Buzzingfor abettertomorrow! Iwantedtodosomethingthat reallymadea difference —something that wouldhelptackle thedecline in beenumbers while inspiringthe next generationtocareabout these incredible littlepollinators.Ibegan by visitinglocal primary schools to talk to thechildrenabout why bees aresoimportant andhow they can helpprotect them.Together,wecreated bee-friendlyspaces, andthe children made some amazing beethemed artwork,which we displayed in store. I’mmostproud of my children’sbooklet all about bees.The childrenlovedusingit, and teachers told me howmuch it helped bring the topictolife in theclassroom. Seeingsomething I’dcreated usedinsucha positiveway wasa highlight of thewhole project. Our Big Bee Weekendwas another hugesuccess.Itbrought thecommunity together andhelpedboost salesofhoney,plants, andotherbee-friendly products.

Ialsohad theopportunity to visit alocal bee farmerand learn whatittakes to become abeekeeper.Looking back,I’m proud of everything this project achieved. It wasn’t justabout raisingawareness— it wasabout connection:between people, nature, and the bees that keep our worldthriving.

Growing together: Why garden centresmust lead the greentransition

Garden centres, growers, and suppliersare more than individual businesses —they arecustodians of Britain’sgreen future. At arecent gatheringinthe House of Lordsofindustry and Parliamentarians, I argued that our sector is uniquelypositioned to drivesustainability,nurturebiodiversity, and inspirecommunities. Now, Iwantto bring that message directlytoyou: the businesses at the heartofEnvironmental Horticulture. Thechoices we maketoday will determine whether our industry thrivesina changing climateorstrugglestoadapt.

We areunique in being theonlyindustry that should be encouraged to makeabigger environmental impact. Our work does not degrade the world we live in —itimproves it Cleaner air, greenerspaces, biodiversity,and wellbeing: horticultureisaforce forgood.

Asworkingweeks go,this one has been action-packed, full of thoughtfuldiscussionwith member businesses and lots of travelling!That’s because at the time of writing this, Ihave just finished my latest visit to Scotland for aBusinessImprovement Scheme (BIS) event. As well as being the President of the HTA, Ialso chair some of the regional BIS groups that run four timesayear,upand down the country. TheBIS is aimed at small to medium-sized independent retailers, who come together and shareknowledge, feedback, supportand businessdevelopment opportunities.

Our latest host wasKirktownGarden CentreinStonehaven, alovely friendly garden centrewith afabulous restaurant and big ambitions. Likeall businessesacross the country,those in Scotland facemany challenges:Rising costs, inflation and pricing andstaffing challenges.

But it doesn’thavetobeall doom and gloom.The BISevents generateplenty of open andhonest discussions and Scottish members tell me theyfind the group ahugely helpful resource,not just the financial benchmarking but as asounding boardfor newideas or processes and a safe, non-judgmental place to talk about the issues facing their businesses.

Sharing ideas

Some of thetopicswemight cover are howtodiversifyorgrowyour business. For example, if one member wants to include a softplay area in their garden centre, theywill be able to get help and advicefromother members who have already gone through it, learning valuable lessons. Another example might be wherea garden centrewants to move from a30-seater café to a120-cover restaurant. Wheretostart? Well, in the BIS meetings, thereisalways awealth of knowledgeand experience to draw from. We knowthat in thepast, host businesses haveimplemented radical changesand improvements after constructivefeedback

from these sessions.

Can youimagine this happening in any othersector or industry? Sharing knowledgeand best practiceinaninformal but structured way, being supportiveof ‘competing’businesses and even helping each otherout with ideas… certainly something youwouldn’tsee in the banking world or read about in the media.

Ifirstjoined the BIS in 2002/2003when I wasrunning Armitage GardenCentres,and Ifound the interaction invaluable. Being able to network with like-minded people and ask for adviceand recommendations waspricelessand ahuge help in my career.I learnt very early on about the importanceof benchmarking in businessand setting goals and KPI’s– something which Iwas able to do by communicating and sharing information with similar businessmanagers. Inever thought that one day,Iwould be chairing my owngroups

Ihaveatheoryabout this. Essentially,I believe weare all gardeners.Bythat Imean we all enjoysharing things, whether it’s seeds, cuttings, plants,advice, or knowledge Our industryisbuilt on that, and Ithink everyone and everything in horticulture benefits from sharing.Withoutsharing and caring,our wonderful industrywill not be able to continually adapt and grow

One of the discussions we had recently wasaround howmuchinformation (good or bad) managers should sharewiththeir employees.Thereisarange of opinions on this, but Ibelieve having an open and honest management team leadstoanopen and honest organisation. If yougivepeople the opportunity to care, more often than not, theywill care. Agood manager will want his or her staff to feel respectedand partofthe organisation.

And finally, theAutumnBudget!

We all knowhow tricky it is for businesses in this current climate.With the budget announcement dueon26th November,we areall waiting to hear howthiswill impact the gardenretailsectorand horticulture industry as awhole. At the time of writing, the HTAPolicyand PublicAffairs team has been working hardtomakeitclear to the Government that urgent action is needed to easepressureonour memberbusinesses.

Some of theHTA keyasks include:

•Halt further rises in employertaxes.

•Pause and consult on changes to Agricultural Property Relief (APR) and Business Property Relief (BPR).

•Reformbusiness rates, including fair treatment for GardenCentres.

•Back the industry-led transition to peatfree growing with aclear roadmap,timelines, and funding for R&D.

•Recognise horticulture, landscaping and arboriculturerolesinofficial greenjobs definitions, and expand funding for skills and apprenticeships.

2025: Ayear of growth, grit and gardening joy

Ican hardly believe I’monceagain writing a reviewofthe year –ittruly haspassed in the blink of an eye. Yet2025, which began with understandable nervousnessaswefaced the threat of rising costs acrossthe supply chain, including the dreaded National Insurance bomb, has ultimately provedtobea year characterised by positivityand growth. Mostsignificantly,the weather finally answered ourhopes, delivering aprolonged gardening season that enabledthe category to flourish. While somebig-ticket items felt the pressureasconsumerstightened their belts, the broader gardening market remained consistently strong.Whether shoppers wereenhancing their homesorseeking the health andwellbeing benefits that gardening so naturally provides, the appeal of our sector provedasbroad as ever.Gardening continues to mean many different things to many differentpeople, and thatdiversity of motivation is one of our greatest strengths. This year also brought anotable shift in the retail landscape. We said afinal goodbye to Homebase, and also witnessed several of the larger garden centre chains expand as theyabsorbed smallersites thatmight otherwise haveclosed permanently. Yetit wasthe evolution of onlinemarketplaces that sparked the most conversation. These platforms reshaped howmany sectors connect with consumers, creating newpathways for discovery,fulfilment and loyalty. Garden retail, however,has not embraced marketplaces to thesame extent. Instead, many of uscontinue to champion the in-person, experiential style of retail that sitsatthe heartofour industry’s identity

But while our sector’s physicalroots remainstrong, we cannot ignorethe pace at whichonline channels evolve. Marketplace segmentation can happenquickly,and consumer appetitecan shift just as fast.As asector we must remain ready to respond, ensuring we don’t lose relevanceasthese digital ecosystems mature. The good news is that we havemany associate members with the expertise to supportany transition, andI strongly encourage those curious aboutthe opportunities to reachout

So,whatdoesall of this meanfor GIMA members as we look to the year ahead? While strong trading periods,supported by favourableweather,havehelped shield many from thefull impactofrising costs, thosepressures arenot going away.Recent increases to the minimum wage,along with wider operationaland materialcostinflation, continue to affect the sector.

One issuenow coming sharply intofocus is the shiftingburdenofEPR.With responsibility moving moreheavily towardsthe supplier, some members arefacingsignificantlyhigher costs than initiallyforecast.This will havemajor repercussions across margins and pricing,and its effects will be felt right through the year Unlikearun of good weather,there is no hiding from these structuralchanges.Itpaints a picture of progress,but notwithout challenge: onestepforward,two steps back, yetstill moving in the right direction. Despitethe headwinds, ourindustry remains innovative, adaptableand committed to delivering products thatmeet the changing needsof gardeners.

To supportthis momentum,wehavea packed schedulefor 2026.Our programmewill delivertargetededucation, knowledge-sharing opportunities and the ever-popular Meet the Buyerevents,all designedtohelp members navigatebothshort-term challenges and longterm growth. And that’sbeforeweeventouch on the networking,fundraising and celebratory events, including the Garden PressEvent,

GIMA Day Conference, Charity Golf Day and, of course, the GIMA Awards.

As we closeout the year,we’re proudof what GIMA and ourmembers haveachieved. Despitethe challenges, it hasbeen ayearof real progress,with membership nowexceeding 230 businesses.Our collectivevoice is stronger than ever,and the value of collaboration, sharedlearning and industry leadership has been clear throughout.
