PIPPIN

NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR

For years, I have wanted to bring the beauty of American Sign Language onto the stage and into a production I was directing. The opportunity didn’t present itself ... until now.

When I was planning my first season back at the Garden, Pippin was at the top of my list as a show we should produce. I had been in a production many, many moons ago and two songs from the show were sung to my wife, Tara, and me at our wedding. (Sung, in fact, by our Board Chair, Rich Taylor and his amazing wife, Andy). So, Pippin means a great deal to me for many reasons.

As I began my deep dive into the show, its origins, and its history, it became clear to me that this was a story that could be illuminated in such an interesting way by making Pippin deaf. I had found my project, and I set out to bring it to the Garden stage.

Stephen Schwartz, when talking about the show, discussed how the Players are voices in Pippin’s head. This piqued my interest and made me look at the show differently. Whereas most productions go the route of a group of players presenting a story to an audience, I wanted to explore the idea of a troubled, young man who is searching for his place in the world and who thinks his life has to be extraordinary in order for it to be worth living. And what he finds is that happiness was never over there. It was always right where he was. Happiness didn’t need to be difficult to achieve. It could be simple and easy.

It would not have been possible to bring this show to life without a great deal of help and education. I surrounded myself with members of the d/Deaf community and individuals who work with the community. This process has been daunting and joyous, and I would not change a thing about it. I have gone beyond loving the visual beauty of ASL and have come to better understand what it means to be deaf by working with my Director of Artistic Sign Language, Michelle Mary Schaefer, our deaf actors, Lane and Treshelle, our interpreters who are led by our champion, Brian Truitt, and our hearing artists. It has been the education of a lifetime, and it is not over. My dream for the Garden is to be a beacon for inclusivity and, in order to do that, it MUST include artists with disabilities. Without them in the conversation, the discussion falls short.

I am excited for you to experience our Pippin. A great deal of love, respect, determination, and passion has gone into this project. My hope is that you feel all of that radiating from the Garden stage tonight.

Accessibility – Kindly arrange any special needs, including wheelchair accessible seating, with the Box Office staff. House management will provide assisted listening devices upon request.

Returns and Exchanges – There are no refunds on tickets to Garden Theatre events. All sales are final. There is a $5 exchange fee on ticket orders. Ticket exchanges must be made at least 24 hours prior to the performance. No credit will be given. Subscribers are exempt from this fee.

Restrooms – Restrooms are located on the second floor via the grand staircase through the double doors near concessions. The lobby restroom is meant for those guests with difficulty accessing the second floor.

Just as roots are vital to a garden’s growth, our Root Donors are vital to Garden Theatre’s prosperity. Donors who are acknowledged through permanent recognition on our donor tree have contributed $5,000 or above to the Garden Theatre Restoration Campaign between 2004 and January 15, 2015, OR have bestowed a one-time cash donation of at least $10,000. The gifts of these donors contribute to future developments and growth of the Garden Theatre for years to come.
