25th Anniversary Celebration Was a Success!

On Wednesday, September 8, we enjoyed beautiful weather, delicious food and delightful entertainment as we celebrated our 25th Anniversary Celebration.

Our very own “Queen Esther” Sideman, the first resident to move to Garden Spot Village, presided over two seatings of “Dinner with the Queen.”

RoundTable Productions provided entertainment for both dinners, including a thrilling joust. The day ended with a fireworks show.

Many residents enjoyed the event. Carol Totten echoes what several residents have said, “The 25th Anniversary Celebration was festive, colorful, fun, good, different and special. The fireworks were the perfect ending to the celebration.

They were spectacular!”

For You Are All One - Galatians 3:28 “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” But, in fact, there are Jews and Christians, and males and females. There are no longer slaves in America but there are Black and White “races.” (The term race did not exist until about 400 years ago so it does not appear in the Bible). We know of the social, economic, educational, political and health disparities between Blacks and Whites in America. How do we get from this reality to “for you are all one in Christ Jesus”? As a start for setting one’s own foundation for getting there, is Micah 6:8 relevant? How about the greatest and second greatest commandments (Matthew 22:37-39)? What are your thoughts? RACIAL LITERACY RESOURCE

“Race and Racism,” a 6-series podcast by Conrad Kanagy will be offered to GSV residents as a resource for an ongoing conversation regarding increasing our racial literacy. Conrad Kanagy combines his vocation as a sociologist (Elizabethtown College) and ministry as a pastor during the past thirty years in presenting this insightful, thought-provoking series. Study guides and additional resources will be available to attendees. This series will be offered on Mondays, October 4, 11, 18, 25, November 1, 8 in the GSV Theater, 10:30-11:15am. Conrad will join us on November 15, 7pm in the Chapel for a wrap-up of this series and to entertain questions and further discussion from participants.

DEMENTIA EDUCATION SEMINAR

Dementia has many definitions and impacts. In these presentations, October 13 & 20, GSV resident Val Dunham (PHD in organic chemistry) will share details related to the human brain and DNA as it pertains to dementia. Melody Karick, Director of Meadow View, GSV, will share practical resources of responding to people with dementia. Chaplain Mark Hickson will present spiritual care responses which are effective in ministering peace for those impacted by dementia. This series will cover a significant range of information geared towards those seeking information about the experience of dementia and its impact upon our loved ones.

The Garden Spot Village Social Services team will offer free and confidential ten minute memory screens for residents on Monday, October 18. This is a part of the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America’s (AFA) National Memory Screening Program. The memory screen is a baseline for your benefit. Results will be sent with you and may be shared with your doctor at your discretion.

Medicare Part D – Prescription Drug Plans

The Social Services team will continue the annual tradition of providing complementary consultations for residents with Traditional Medicare who wish to review their Medicare D Prescription Drug plan during annual Open Enrollment. If you choose to change plans, we can help you complete the enrollment.

Beginning October 1, you may schedule an appointment by calling Resident Services (6000). All consultations will take place in the Chapel Parlor. Please arrive promptly and bring all medications in their original containers along with your Medicare, health insurance, and current prescription plan cards.

PLEASE NOTE! • Do not schedule a Medicare D appointment with Social Services if you have Rx coverage as part of a Medicare Advantage Plan or Retirement Benefit package. You will need to work through your retirement plan administrator or an insurance broker so that you do not lose valuable benefits.

• If you utilize benefits from PACE/PACENET, it is also unnecessary to schedule an appointment with Social Services.

The program will automatically assign a Medicare D plan to you.

SHARE & CARE OFFERS AN OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE The Share & Care Thrift Shop at Garden Spot Village is one of the best kept secrets in New Holland! The shop offers quality used items—from lamps and dishes to linens, purses, jewelry and furniture—at incredibly affordable prices.

E.J. Rittersbach, a Garden Spot Village resident since August 2008, co-manages Share & Care with Shirley Wenger, a Garden Spot Village resident since June 1996, and Janice Ford, a Garden Spot Village resident since June 2017.

EJ says, “I see two great reasons for supporting Share & Care through donations. First of all, 100% of the proceeds go directly to the Benevolent Fund, which supports residents who, for reasons outside of their control, have exhausted their financial resources."

“Second, if a resident cannot physically bring the items to Share & Care, someone will come and get the items. There’s no need to drive the items somewhere or ask someone to pick them up and drop them off. We will take care of it.”

She adds, “We always want to look at furniture before it’s dropped off, but everything else is welcome. Working coffee pots, toasters, flat screen TVs, knick-knacks, baskets—we welcome everything BUT clothing. If we get something we can’t sell, we just pass it along to another thrift store.”

Cecilia Bardone, a Garden Spot Village resident since July 2019, volunteers in the Share & Care Thrift Shop on Thursday afternoons. “I thoroughly enjoy volunteering in Share & Care,” she says. “The store is great. When we moved in, we had things we didn’t need. We were able to donate items to Share & Care to help our community.”

Residents, team members and members of the broader New Holland community shop often. EJ reports that sales for the store are up but donations are down! If you are downsizing, fall housecleaning or just generally working through your stuff, please share your unwanted items with Share & Care.

Share & Care is open Monday through Friday, 10am to 4pm and Saturday, 9am to noon. Drop items off during those hours and shop for new items too!
