HAPPY SPRING AND WHAT A WONDERFUL WINTER!!!

We were so blessed to go through the winter with very little snow fall and moderate temperatures. The “Old Farmers Almanac” did predict a mild winter with below average snowfall, but no snowfalls over 2 inches through February is pretty remarkable, and some reports mentioned February was one of the sixth warmest in history!!

The mild winter has allowed the Campus Services Department to get a head start on spring by beginning the mulching early. We have already gone through over 10 tractor trailer loads of mulch. The Inner Loop, Village Square Apartments, Households and the Legacy Garden were first on the list to be mulched.

The Entrances and Common Areas will be the next areas of focus, followed by the Cottage Neighborhoods. We hope, weather permitting, to have the entire Campus completed by around Memorial Day. Two other exciting announcements pertain to new staff members.

Roy Burd, our long time mechanic, retired on January 30 after over 13 years of service. He is enjoying his next chapter of life! We were fortunate to hire Rick Waibel while Roy was still with us, helping to make the transition go smoothly. Rick has over 32 years of experience with the Air Force and Air National Guard.

The second staff announcement relates to the Aeroponic Greenhouse. Our Administration allowed us to begin a search for a fulltime Greenhouse Manager, and we were fortunate to receive multiple qualified applicants to interview. We selected Steve Heydt, who started his new role on March 11. Steve comes to us from Tomlinson Bomberger, with over 25 years in the Green Industry. You may also see Steve as a substitute driver on one of the GSV buses.

You know me, I always see the silver lining in every situation. The silver lining for me in our current circumstances is that we live and work at Garden Spot Village. As things progressed, you’ve received CATIE messages to keep you up to date. Before meeting size precautions went into effect, we discussed things at Coffee & Conversation. We held the March Towne Meeting virtually. We post updates on our website and staff are more than willing to stop and talk and provide one-on-one updates in the hallways. All of that will continue to take place to keep you informed.

From behind the scenes and as a member of the leadership team, this has been one of the most well thought out, practical approaches to an unprecedented global situation that I’ve participated in during my 40 year career. The close monitoring and adherence to the guidelines of the PA Department of Health and the CDC, with no sense of panic and a sensible, practical plan of action provides a tremendous amount of comfort. All of your cooperation and concern for each other and the staff is overwhelming. We are all in one of the best places we could be during these times.

SUPPORT GROUP SPOTLIGHT

MY FELLOW TRAVELER

Everyone is welcome to participate in this new group facilitated by GSV staff members Melody Karick and Leah Amstutz.

Getting to know the facilitators: Well-known locally for her advocacy and educational work on behalf of older adults experiencing memory changes, Melody’s goal is helping each person function at the highest level possible.

She is a wonderful resource for creative solutions and ideas to maximize enjoyment of life while coping with memory changes. Melody serves as Director of GSV Laurel View Memory Support. Leah Amstutz, MSW, joined the GSV Social Services team in September. She was already familiar with the campus and the GSV philosophy of living life with purpose from having served with the Social Services team during her internship several years ago. Leah has been enjoying supporting the residents of Mountain View and Laurel View Personal Care areas as their social worker.

Thank you for blessing us with your life stories. We are enriched by your testimonies, resilience, courage and strength. We are honored to walk alongside of you on this adventure called life.

DUANE TICE:

One of the first GSV VITA Coordinators written by Juanita Fox, Storyteller

Over the past two months hundreds of people have filed into the Gardens South Conference Room with their tax documents.

Completing a tax return can be unsettling and a little overwhelming, but Duane Tice and his co-coordinators Bill Hunter and Don Aldrich, along with their team of greeters and tax preparers, make filing a tax return as quick and as painless as possible.

The team provides free tax return preparation through the IRSsponsored Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, supported locally through United Way in Lancaster. The national program is available to anyone who earned less than $62,000 in 2019.

Duane Tice, a Garden Spot Village resident since April 2008 and one of the first VITA coordinators for the Garden Spot Village location, says, “We help them get their taxes done and they walk out with a smile.”

Duane says the IRS started VITA in order to help people comply with the federal law that compels every eligible person to file a tax return. United Way of Lancaster County supports 17 VITA locations around the county, including Garden Spot Village. Garden Spot Village volunteers began offering tax assistance through VITA 17 years ago.

Duane and the other volunteers truly make a difference for the people they serve, creating relationships and a sense of welcome. Duane shared that people travel from Gap, Intercourse and Lancaster, even though they have options closer to their homes, because they appreciate the volunteers and atmosphere at Garden Spot Village

VOLUNTEER SERVICES Deborah Fast, Director of Volunteer Services BARBARA MURPHY: CRAFTING FOR A CAUSE written by Alex Nieves, Marketing Intern

“When we moved here, I didn’t know anyone. But, we’re all a family now,” resident Barbara Murphy says, reflecting on her experience at Garden Spot Village. When Barbara and her husband moved to Garden Spot Village in May 2008, they only knew one other resident. Over the years, though, Barbara has found multiple ways to positively impact and connect with others.

Specifically, Barbara volunteers her immense crafting and sewing skills to help benefit others in the community. Creating and selling quilts, stuffed animals, crafts and more. Barbara donates the crafts to be sold at events that benefit the Benevolent Fund, which helps residents who, for reasons beyond their control, have exhausted their financial resources.

Two of the main events where she donates her creations are the Bird House Display and Silent Auction and the Fall Festival. “It thrills me to see the prices of my objects go up and know that the money is going to go to the Benevolent Fund,” Barbara says.

Barbara spends many hours volunteering by crafting new items to donate. She gets her inspiration online and in-person while shopping, and makes all of her items by hand. She records how long it takes for her to make each item, as well; one piece can take up to 77 hours to create! When working on her crafts, she infuses technology into her routine, buying and printing patterns from her iPad onto a printer—no travel or work necessary. “If there’s a will, there’s a way,” Barbara says with a smile while explaining how technology makes it easier for her to complete her creations.

Making these crafts has filled Barbara’s life at Garden Spot with purpose and meaning; as time passed, she got into quilting and crafting more and more, allowing her to keep busy while giving back to her friends and neighbors—and even strangers— around her. She likes to keep sewing, explaining it as her special way to give to others. It has also allowed for the community around her to grow even stronger, creating a familial bond between her and other residents that will never fade.
