SOARING INTO SPRING 12 Annual Bird House Display and Silent Auction th

A chilly, rainy winter will soon give way to blooms and birdsongs. Greet spring with a tour of the annual Bird House Display and Silent Auction. This is the twelfth year for the event, which started in 2009, by Wood Shop members to raise money for the Benevolent Fund. In several recent years, we have been blessed with beautifully handmade items from quilters, crafters and cross stitchers, with a bird theme.

Plan now to visit the Village Square Indoor Park from February 1-28 to get your dose of bird beauty, combat that spring fever, and place bids on items that pique your interest. Scores of unique bird houses are on display, along with quilted and other handcrafted items.

The silent auction bidding ends at 5pm on Friday, February 28. *Note: This is a leap year, and though there are 29 days in February, we will still be closing the auction at 5pm on Friday, February 28. Plan now to visit the Village Square Indoor Park before the end of the month. The unique items in the silent auction make nice one-of-a-kind gifts to usher in the start of spring.

Thank you to the Wood Shop members, quilters, and other talented residents who have created and donated items to raise money for the Benevolent Fund.

A BIRD HOUSE STORY Art Petrosemolo, who blogs for Garden Spot Village, wrote the following story after chatting with Bill George, who had the original vision for the Bird House Display and Silent Auction.

Bill told me that several years ago, he had built a small windmill birdhouse for the February Garden Spot birdhouse sale that benefits the Benevolent Fund. As you know residents and friends bid on the birdhouses that are displayed in the Village Square for a month.

Anyway, a few days after the birdhouses were out, Bill checked to see if there were any bids on the windmill. To his complete surprise with a few weeks left for bidding, there already was a $500 bid from Barbara Hoekstra on the small brown and white windmill birdhouse he made. “I was shocked,” Bill told me, “and thought maybe Barbara made a mistake.”

He said he called her to confirm the generous bid and she told him it was correct. She explained she came from a Dutch background and the birdhouse reminded her of the windmills in the Netherlands and she was afraid she would be outbid. What she didn’t tell Bill—but her sister Ginny confirmed to me—is that she also had seen Bill’s work and wanted to own something built by his hand.

Barbara’s bid certainly was the high bid (and probably set a record for birdhouse bids) and Ginny told me the windmill had a special place in Barbara’s apartment and was displayed on an heirloom family table for friends and guests to see.

It’s a great story but it doesn’t end there. Bill said the day after Barbara passed, Ginny called him and said that Barbara had told her to return the windmill birdhouse to him and that he should put it back in the birdhouse auction so someone new could enjoy it. Bill was surprised and pleased.

I thought about it all day and decided to, with Ginny’s permission, share the story…and I have. So when the birdhouse auction begins on Febuary 1, look for a small brown windmill with white blades and remember who made it and who treasured it and asked that it go back into the auction so someone else could enjoy it.

My name may not be the first bid on it but it will be there and probably more than once and hopefully at the end too.

Mr. Ketchum is a highly engaging speaker. He's great with adults, young adults, and/or young people. He is sensitive and inclusive.

Ketchum, owner of the Penn Cinema complex north of Lancaster, PA, is also an Ironman athlete and runner. One of the dynamic parts of his story is that he has been in recovery for many years.

He is both the author and the illustrator of the just-released book, Psalm 23 (in other words).

Ketchum's gift is to take familiar scripture passages and make them come alive with new words and images. People of all backgrounds warm up to him.

His presentation will be primarily about his journey growing up, liking the movies, his struggle with addiction and many years in recovery and, discovering scripture passages in a new way when he is running mile after mile.

After his presentation, Ketchum will sign copies of his book for those who are interested.

The outpouring of hospitality and community at this time of year is very obvious. People comment on it personally, they post about it on social media, some send e-mails and it makes people want to come and live with us. On the Future Resident Application are the questions: What do you like most about Garden Spot Village and What are you looking forward to the most? I thought you might find a recent answer to those questions interesting. They do not know anyone here other than those they met during visits. They said, “Being immersed in a Christ Centered Community and to improve and maintain our health, and enable us to lead the lives meant for us to fulfill our purpose.” We live and serve in a very unique community called Garden Spot Village.

Rashard Allen is currently the Director of Music and Worship at Neffsville Mennonite Church. He has a Bachelor of Music from Oberlin Conservatory of Music, a Master's in Sacred Music from Perkins School of Theology, and a Doctor of Worship Studies from The Robert E. Webber Institute for Worship Studies. Rashard will be leading us in a worship service with music from African-American worship traditions. He will move chronologically throughout the service from the spirituals of the Hush Harbor slave churches, all the way to modern-day gospel. His accompanist, Carl Anderson, hails originally from Great Britain, and is currently an actor/singer at Sight and Sound, as well as a Music Minister at Journey Church in Ronks.

GSV residents are invited to consider the next home repair days with Good Works in Coatesville. Depart GSV 7:45am in order to arrive at Good Works Headquarters, Coatesville, by 8:30am. There we receive our assignment for the day, which typically involves light construction/repair on one or several houses in the Coatesville/Honey Brook area.

We usually conclude the work day around 4pm and arrive back at GSV by 5pm. Men and women with much or little experience in home repair are invited to assist with these ministry days! Don Aldrich and Curt Cole are happy to share more information for your interest and involvement.

Rod Stauffer, Garden Spot Village resident since June 2006.

When Rod Stauffer graduated from high school in 1943, the world was at war. He followed in his brother’s footsteps and enlisted in the Navy.

After boot camp in Newport, Rhode Island, he headed to Bainbridge, Maryland, where he was trained as a hospital corpsman. He served at Philadelphia Naval Hospital, the first high-rise hospital building constructed by the U.S. Navy. He also served at the Navy Yard Medical Center where he was trained to be a dental technician. He worked in the lab, helping to make dentures and dental bridges for Navy personnel.

“That’s where I fell in love with dentistry,” Rod says.

When the war ended, Rod returned home and attended Gettysburg College before heading to dental school at University of Pennsylvania. In 1953 he opened a practice in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. In June 1955 he connected with Dr. Poole, who had a dental practice in New Holland. After a couple of months of conversations and filling in for Dr. Poole, Rod began practicing in New Holland. When Dr. Poole passed away suddenly in October 1957 Rod arranged to purchase the practice from Dr. Poole’s widow.

Just married, Rod and his wife, Dorothy, settled in New Holland. They raised three daughters and saw the town blossom and grow. They attended St. Stephen Reformed Church in New Holland and Rod served with the New Holland Kiwanis for 50 years. In 1996 the Lancaster County Dental Society awarded Rod the Robert K Cooper Award for public service; in 1997 the American Institute for Public Service recognized Rod with the Jefferson Award. Rod was the first person in New Holland to receive this award.

Rod and Dorothy moved to Garden Spot Village in June 2006.

Over the 30 years he served as dentist, Rod says dentistry changed significantly. The largest change was the extensive use of X-rays to identify the size of cavities and the speed of the drill used to repair cavities.

For people who are hesitant to brush their teeth, Rod says, “get busy!”

Sunday, February 9 is National Toothache Day. In honor of this day, Garden Spot Village will collect toothbrushes and toothpaste for Water Street Ministries. Last year residents and staff donated 244 items including toothbrushes, toothpaste and floss.

MEDICARE ADVANTAGE OPEN ENROLLMENT PERIOD

Jan 1 – March 31 there is an opportunity for anyone already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan to switch from one Advantage plan to another. You may also return to Original Medicare during this time. If currently enrolled in Original Medicare, you cannot join an Advantage Plan during this time period or change from one Medicare D Prescription Drug plan to another.

SOME HAVE BEEN ASKING, WHAT IS A POLST? POLST stands for Pennsylvania Orders for Life Sustaining Treatment and is a tool to ensure medical professionals follow end-of-life desires. Unlike a living will or advanced directive, the POLST not only communicates end-of-life wishes, but is an actual order from a doctor.

WHO CAN GET A POLST?

The POLST form is especially designed for individuals who are frail or have a serious illness. This means the immediate completion of a POLST may not be the best choice for every person. This decision is between you and your doctor. If your doctor says a POLST is not for you at this time, a living will or advanced directive is still appropriate.

WHAT IS THE PROCESS?

After a medical provider deems the POLST appropriate, the provider will discuss end-of-life wishes with the individual and then sign the POLST. A doctor, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant are authorized to sign. It is not appropriate for an individual to complete the form prior to a face-to-face conversation with a medical professional.

Medical providers usually have the POLST document, but individuals can also print a copy on pink paper to take along to the doctor (https://www.papolst.org/pa-polst-form).

IMPORTANT DETAILS

After obtaining a POLST, individuals ought to keep the order in a prominent place - often on the refrigerator - for quick visibility in case of an emergency. If a GSV resident does not feel comfortable having end-of-life wishes displayed in the kitchen, the bathroom cabinet (with other emergency information) or bedside table are alternative locations. Keep in mind that a POLST is not useful if inaccessible.

Individuals can change a POLST order–just make certain the doctor completes a new form and voids the old copy.

A living will/advanced directive should be consistent with a POLST. There ought not to be any contradictions between the two documents.

VOLUNTEER SERVICES Deborah Fast, Director of Volunteer Services DAVID WILLICK : CONNECTING WITH PEOPLE

“So many friendly and interesting people live at Garden Spot Village. It’s a real privilege for me to meet new people and get acquainted with them,” says David Willick, a Garden Spot Village resident since August 2017. Driving the Jolley Trolley offers a great opportunity for David to talk with people and get to know them better.

David also helps with Bingo, serves as a safety monitor for Gardens North and has completed Caring Connections training. As a safety monitor, Dave is responsible for ensuring that the people on his floor make safe decisions during extreme weather. For example, if there is a hurricane warning, Dave alerts his neighbors to the warning and asks them to stay in their apartment, in a safe place.

Volunteering isn’t new to David. It’s a tangible result of his faith. David says, “When I accepted Jesus Christ as my savior, I experienced a complete transformation in my life. I am happiest when I'm living the life God planned for me.”

He has connected with people and has served with non-profit organizations everywhere he’s lived. He grew up in Niagara Falls, Canada and met his wife, Donna, at a small Christian college they both attended. David started his career at the Royal Bank of Canada, but soon after had a chance to work for the American Can Company in their finance department. He later transferred to the Boston area in order to convert the company's accounting system when the company bought the Dixie Cup Corporation. They also lived in Lunenberg and Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts and Sarasota, Florida.

While they lived in Canada, David volunteered with Christian Service Brigade organization and later with Christian Service Brigade’s New England Frontier Camp in Maine. He also served with The Resurrection House for the homeless in Sarasota and a prison ministry in Concord, Massachusetts.

David and Donna have four children (two boys and two girls), ten grandchildren and one great-grandson.

They learned about Garden Spot Village through their daughter who lives in West Chester. The location and community atmosphere felt like a good fit so, they relocated from Sarasota to Pennsylvania in the summer of 2017.

On connecting with his neighbors at Garden Spot, David says, “God has really blessed us with new friends and opportunities to listen and study God’s word, as well as beautiful music and so many other things that make Garden Spot a great place to live.”

WELLNESS 2020 WELLNESS VISION PART 2: HEART HEALTH

What part of your wellness vision is taking care of your heart? February is Heart Month, the perfect time to learn about your risk for heart disease and the steps you need to take now to help your heart. Half of all Americans have at least one of the top three risk factors for heart disease (high blood pressure, high cholesterol or smoking).

You Could Be at Risk • High blood pressure. Having uncontrolled high blood pressure is one of the biggest risks for heart disease and other harmful conditions, such as stroke.

• High blood cholesterol. High cholesterol can increase the risk for heart disease. Having diabetes and obesity, smoking, eating unhealthy foods, and not getting enough physical activity can all contribute to unhealthy cholesterol levels.

• Smoking. More than 37 million U.S. adults are current smokers, and thousands of young people start smoking each day. Smoking damages the blood vessels and can cause heart disease.

• Other conditions and behaviors that affect your risk for heart disease include: • Obesity. Carrying extra weight puts stress on the heart. More than 1 in 3 Americans—and nearly 1 in 6 children ages 2 to 19—are obese.

• Diabetes. Diabetes causes sugar to build up in the blood. This can damage blood vessels and nerves that help control the heart muscle.

Nearly 1 in 10 people in the United States has diabetes.

• Physical inactivity. Staying physically active helps keep the heart and blood vessels healthy. Only 1 in 5 adults meets the physical activity guidelines of getting 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity activity.

• Unhealthy eating patterns. Most Americans, including children, eat too much sodium (salt), which increases blood pressure. Replacing foods high in sodium with fresh fruits and vegetables can help lower blood pressure. But only 1 in 10 adults is getting enough fruits and vegetables each day.

• A Diet high in trans-fat, saturated fat, and added sugar increases the risk factor for heart disease.
