WELLNESS HIGHLIGHT:

FEBRUARY 2 IS NATIONAL WEAR RED DAY!

WALK & TALK

WEAR RED TO RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE AND HELP SAVE LIVES.

TUESDAYS & THURSDAYS 8:00AM Meet at the Apartment Suites Lobby

WINTER BLUES GOT YOU DOWN? Come sit by the pool and warm up and cheer up, bring a book, deck of cards or a friend. You don’t have to go in the pool to enjoy the pool area. It is always sunny and 88 degrees.

JOIN US AT 1PM AT THE VILLAGE SQUARE FOR A HEART HEALTHY WALK AND WEAR RED!

Growing evidence suggests a close link between the health of the heart and the health of the brain. The brain is nourished by one of the body’s richest networks of blood vessels. With every beat, the heart pumps 20-25 percent of the blood to the head, where brain cells use at least 20 percent of the food and oxygen carried by the blood in order to function normally.

As a result, many factors that damage the heart or blood vessels may also damage the brain – and may increase the risk for developing Alzheimer’s and other dementias. What are some specific factors that may put the brain at risk? How about the converse: will keeping my heart healthy keep my brain healthy? What’s good for your heart may in fact be good for your brain, too. Physical activity is one such factor that not only protects the heart but improves cognitive function and may also protect against dementia. And, some emerging evidence suggests that consuming a heart-healthy diet may also protect the brain. Many cardiovascular disease risk factors are modifiable – that is, they can be changed to decrease the likelihood of developing cardiovascular disease.and helpful to protecting brain health.

The brain is one of the most important muscles in the body. And just like other muscles, the brain needs exercise to stay healthy. Studies have shown brain exercises ward off inactivity more than physical activity prevents cognitive decline. The brain has to make a real effort to get out of the sedentary lifestyle and by working on cognitive capacities, physical activity will follow. “Use it or lose it” commonly refers to the importance of exercising your body and staying fit. Exercising your brain is just as important. Your brain needs a regular workout, especially as you age. By incorporating brain exercises into your everyday life, you’ll challenge your mind, sharpen your cognitive skills, and possibly learn something new and enriching along the way.

We will be starting a new “Brain Fit” Class, Wednesdays 1pm in the Fitness room. Join the Wellness team for any one of our many programs to improve your mental and physical health.
