THE NEW HOLLAND BAND: SERVING THE COMMUNITY SINCE 1829 A TALE OF PATRIOTISM, MUSICIANSHIP AND WAR Article by Amelia Madrigal, Marketing Intern

The New Holland Band formed in 1829 to support the 51st Regiment, Pennsylvania State Militia. For this, the New Holland Band has been declared the second oldest municipal band in the country. The band helped boost morale during wartime and did whatever was needed to help the community, including staffing ambulances, tending wounds, and even fighting in the bloody war. After decades of disbanding and re-banding, the need for a band was crucial when the United States entered World War II in 1941. Patriotism in New Holland was at an all-time high and with the help of the local Lions Club, a new band was formed. Dubbed The Victory Band of New Holland, the band made its musical debut on July 4th, 1942. It thrived, and during the Victory Band Era, the band seemed to increase in quality with each new director. The most recent director for the band was Dr. Kenneth Laudermilch, a retired director from West Chester University. Dr. Laudermilch holds a B.S. in Music Education from Lebanon Valley College, a M.M. in Performance from the New England Conservatory of Music, and a D.M.A. from the Catholic University of America. Fred Hughes, an accomplished musician, conductor and director, will step into the director role in early 2024. Fred returns to Lancaster and the band of his youth; he performed alongside his father in the New Holland Band as a teenager. Now named the New Holland Band, the members perform with purpose. The band has evolved from a military parade to the present-day symphonic band. In 1974, the band toured in Europe focusing on New Holland’s sister city, Longvic, France. It also made stops in Paris, Dijon, and La Chaux de Fonds, Switzerland.

RECOMMENDED BY THE CULTURAL AWARENESS TEAM As we celebrate the birth of Jesus this month, it may be an appropriate time to be reminded of some of His teachings. Jesus states, “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:40). Matthew Desmond, in his book Poverty, by America (2023), does not refer to scripture but discusses how our society treats those living in poverty. Desmond, Sociology Department at Princeton, asserts that the U.S. has more poverty than any other advanced democracy; that poverty in America persists because it benefits the rest of us. He discusses how we can apply our obsessions and talents, whatever they may be, toward reducing poverty. For anyone interested in applying the least of these teaching to today’s society, Poverty, by America may be a good choice. The book may be found in the Social Sciences section of the GSV library at SOC/DES.

Providing opportunities for adults to GO out into our community, DO the thing that is in front of us, HELP others and make a difference.

START DECEMBER BY CONTINUING THANKSGIVING

MARK YOUR CALENDARS

Practicing gratitude can be a game-changer: it has far-reaching effects, from improving our mental health to boosting our relationships with others. Living your life with gratitude helps you notice the little wins—like the bus showing up right on time, a stranger holding the door for you, or the sun shining through your window when you wake up in the morning. Each of these small moments string together to create a web of wellbeing that, over time, strengthens your ability to notice the good. Building your capacity for gratitude isn’t difficult. It just takes practice. The more you can bring your attention to that for which you feel grateful, the more you’ll feel grateful!

DECEMBER 25, MONDAY—JANUARY 1, MONDAY Wellness Center open normal hours. No instructor led Wellness programs. JANUARY 8, MONDAY Do More in 24! Wellness Goal planning begins.

1. Start by observing.

Notice the thank yous you say. Just how much of a habitual response is it? Is it a hasty aside, an afterthought? How are you feeling when you express thanks in small transactions?

2. Pick one interaction a day.

When your instinct to say “thanks” arises, stop for a moment and take note. Can you name what you feel grateful for, even beyond the gesture that’s been extended? Then, say thank you.
