4 Directions That Are Changing How We Think About Gardening

As gardeners, we know that there is truly nothing new “under the sun.” Alternative garden concepts such as roof gardens, meadows, dry gardening, and “wilding” have captivated gardening enthusiasts and are increasingly becoming part of our gardening vernacular. Their appeal lies not only in their sustainable solutions but also in their departure from conventional aesthetics, embracing a more natural and informal approach. These gardens foster a deep connection with nature, enhancing well-being and empowering individuals to actively contribute to conservation efforts. These trends are helping to change the appearance of cities, neighborhoods, and the countryside. Interestingly, although these practices may seem contemporary, their origins can be traced back to ancient times and even into prehistory. For example, roof gardens can be traced all the way back to ancient Mesopotamia, where they served as beautiful green spaces atop roof terraces, and the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, often depicted as tall structures holding vegetation, even immense trees, were among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Meadows, dry gardening, and wilding are far more ancient, as they are actually extensions of our natural landscapes. We have invited four leading voices to share their insights and expertise regarding this garden revival, starting on page 5. These articles shed light on the significance of these alternative gardening practices in the modern world and offer valuable perspectives on the evolving nature of gardening. Letter from the Chair THE GARDEN CONSERVANCY IN 2022

As we reflect on the successes of the Garden Conservancy in 2022, I’m reminded of Frank Cabot’s unwavering dedication to preserving exceptional gardens in the early days of this organization. With remarkable tenacity, Cabot rallied a community of like-minded individuals who understood the profound importance of conserving these living works of art. These early efforts by Cabot and cohorts continue to capture the spirit of our mission and the passion that drives us to expand our endeavors each year. So, it is with great joy and gratitude that I share with you the Conservancy’s accomplishments of 2022. Last year, we witnessed the continued preservation of many iconic gardens, each a testament to the steadfast commitment of our members. Through your generosity, we helped maintain these horticultural treasures, ensuring that future generations can revel in their magnificence. In 2022, our grant funding supported preservation partners The John Fairey Garden, Lake Wilderness Arboretum, and Highline SeaTac Botanical Garden for their general operations. We interviewed fifteen experts in preservation, landscape architecture and design, arts, museums, literature, and community leaders for upcoming documentary films through the Suzanne and Frederic Rheinstein Fund for Garden Documentation. We also engaged over twenty gardens through professional development workshops through our Garden Conservancy Northwest Network. The year 2022 saw not only the return to a full season of Open Days, but also the return of the beloved Open Days Directory. The program blossomed, welcoming garden lovers from far and wide to explore the hidden gems nestled within our communities. Last year, forty new gardens joined the program, and more than 30,000 tickets were sold across 241 Open Days events in twenty states. The enthusiastic response and overwhelming support from Garden Hosts and attendees showcases the growing appreciation of gardens not only for their artistry but also environmental significance and sharing in these cherished spaces. And for the first time since the pandemic, the Society of Fellows garden-study tours resumed at full strength, as ninety-nine individuals participated in three domestic tours, two tours to England and another to Morocco. Our educational initiatives flourished as well. From workshops and lectures to online educational resources, we provided invaluable guidance to garden enthusiasts, inspiring them to make a positive impact on the world around them. Our Virtual Programs, which originally began as a way to stay in contact with our members during the pandemic, continued to grow last year, with eleven programs made available through our educational catalog, as well as four more impromptu “pop-up” webinars. None of these accomplishments would have been possible without the dedication and passion of our members and our board. Your unwavering support and active involvement have propelled us forward, preserving the heritage of these remarkable gardens and enabling us to forge new paths towards a greener and more vibrant future. I am happy to report that membership continues to grow, as more than 1,400 new members joined last year, a 14 percent growth from the previous year. Last year, we welcomed four new directors to the Garden Conservancy board while saying thank you to three board members who stepped down that year. Joining the board in 2022 were Camille Butrus, Alease Fisher, Stephen Orr and Marshall Watson (learn more about them on page 4). Leaving our board were Howard G. “Gerry” Seitz, Suzanne Rheinstein, and Patricia A. “Patsy” Steffan (Sadly, we lost Suzanne and Patsy in 2023). Their efforts to grow the Conservancy were invaluable during the times of their service. Because of the continuing efforts of our board members, Open Days hosts, Fellows, members, partners, and friends, we are brimming with excitement and anticipation for the endeavors that lie ahead. Thank you for being a vital part of the Garden Conservancy family. With your continued support, we will create a world where gardens thrive, inspire, and endure for generations to come.

Dry Gardening

Droughts are the new normal in some regions, but we can still garden. By Johanna Silver While 2023 was a year of record rain and snowfall for the west coast, there’s no getting around the fact that when the seasons change, summer—prime gardening time—is reliably bone dry in this region. Additionally, the need for dry-adapted plants only grows as an ever-increasing portion of the country, from Nebraska to Oklahoma to Texas, is struck by severe and exceptional drought. Any way you slice it, exceedingly dry conditions are a reality for much of the country, and we must learn—and garden—with them. Several decades ago, the idea of xeriscaping came on the scene (introduced by the Denver Water Department in 1981) as the way to dry garden. Xeriscaped gardens looked like this: A cactus here, a cactus there, rock mulch in between. They were not the most inspiring of landscapes. Luckily, the concept of dry gardening has developed leaps and bounds from its early days, and we continue to see nothing but innovation in its future. Often dry gardens are an opportunity to feature native plants, completely at home in drought and a huge benefit to native pollinators. In California, that might look like yellow- or whiteblooming yarrow alongside pink, pendulous Ribes flowers, and purple-flowering puffs of ceanothus. In the Midwest, bite-sized, residential prairies might include coneflowers, tickseed, and heart-leaved wood aster shooting up above a host of native grasses. Or dry gardens can be used as an opportunity to showcase plants from far-flung dry regions of the world, like Australian grevillea and banksia or South African aloes. Non-native plants still benefit those more promiscuous pollinators that surround us, ready to feast on any nectar available. No matter the palette, dry gardens often need much less maintenance than those filled with water-thirsty annuals or even certain fussy perennials. Drought-adapted plants are hardy survivors, accustomed to challenging conditions. Life on the dry side means less water, less work, less fuss. That does not mean dry gardens are boring or without seasonal ebbs and flows. Perhaps nowhere is this model of dry gardening—native and not—highlighted more beautifully than in the Ruth Bancroft Garden in Walnut Creek, California. Namesake Ruth Bancroft collected dry plants from around the world to use in creating masterpiece vignettes in planting beds, woven together by geometry, texture, and color. Aloes burst into bloom in February. Seedheads on grasses wave in the wind all autumn. So stunning was her creation that its discovery by a New York gardener Frank Cabot, inspired his very founding of The Garden Conservancy. To this day, gardeners work in her spirit, preserving her collection while pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in dry garden design. As drought becomes our new reality, let’s celebrate the power of gardening. We can still create beauty and cultivate life, regardless of the conditions we face. Dry gardens are our oasis in the arid wilderness.

Wilding

The ripple effect of returning the land back to nature. By Isabella Tree In 2002, my husband Charlie and I began rewilding a 3,500-acre estate in West Sussex, England, inherited from Charlie’s grandparents. The land is heavy clay—notoriously challenging for agriculture and considered ‘marginal’ by farmers. The farm was making heavy losses and despite all our efforts over thirteen years, we were £1.5million in debt. We decided to exit farming and return the land to nature. Inspired by rewilding projects just beginning in Europe, we re-naturalized our stretch of a river, created ponds, allowed vegetation to grow, trees to recolonize, and then added free-roaming grazing animals to mimic the wild herbivores that would have once roamed our land. As a kaleidoscope of new habitats sprang up under the feet and noses of our free-roaming longhorn cattle, Exmoor ponies, Tamworth pigs, and red and fallow deer, extraordinary things began to happen. Nightingales, peregrine falcons, lesser spotted woodpeckers, purple emperor butterflies and numerous other nationally rare birds and insects found us. As the transformation of Knepp has begun to mature, what we’ve found most overwhelming of all is the wider public response to rewilding. We receive reams of letters, emails and messages: the elderly inspired by hearing woodlarks and nightingales at Knepp recalling the last time they’d heard them, long ago, as children; retired farmers and agronomists expressing regret, realizing the damage they, like us, had unwittingly done in their lives; the young exclaiming their joy at hearing their first turtle dove or cuckoo. Some have been moved to create poems and paintings, even to compose music. What they all express is the sense of hope that Knepp generates. Seeing how nature can bounce back in such profusion and with such astonishing speed, especially on land as unpromising as ours, is both profoundly reassuring and galvanizing. In this age of eco-anxiety, when we can so easily feel utterly powerless and overwhelmed by the challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss, experiencing rewilding seems to restore a sense of agency and ambition. We receive requests from people who want to know how to become part of the movement for change: how to rewild their garden, allotment, orchard or even their window box; how to influence the management of public green space, such as roadside verges, avenues, local parks, tow paths, embankments, churchyards and cemeteries; or how to participate in a rewilding project. It’s incredibly exciting. And we can all do our bit. Together we can act for the good of nature, recovering healthy, sustainable life on this planet, our home.

Lady Isabella Tree is an award winning author, travel writer, and owner of the Knepp Wildland Project, together with her husband, conservationist Charlie Burrell. She is author of the award-winning book Wilding: the return of nature to a British farm, which describes the creation of Knepp rewilding project, and The Book of Wilding: A Practical Guide to Rewilding, Big and Small, which will be released in September 2023. Tree will be the keynote speaker at the Garden Conservancy’s Garden Futures Summit in September 2023.

Rooftop Gardening

Why the rise in rooftop gardening? We may have to look back to look forward. By Ed Snodgrass Our cities were once high-performing ecosystems; they were the best place to thrive, with rivers, estuaries full of food, complex plant communities and wildlife all in balance. But as they’ve grown, our cities have fallen prey to environmental degradation, leaving them inhospitable for plant and animal life. The opportunities for restoring any of the elements of plant and animal life are severely limited by the built environment due to buildings, roads, sidewalks and large impervious areas eliminated for restoration. However, there’s hope on the horizon as cities strive to create ecologically driven landscapes. Rooftops, the largest available spaces, hold the key to this transformation. Despite structural constraints and maintenance costs, rooftops offer immense potential for greenery. Drought-tolerant plants often take center stage, aided by irrigation and careful gardening. The benefits of rooftop gardens span various categories: membrane life extension, stormwater management, building performance, habitat creation, and aesthetics. Commercial waterproofing is most often replaced because of degradation from sunlight, so covering the membrane with green roof media and plants protects the roofing membrane from sunlight and dramatically extends its life. We not only shield these membranes from sunlight—extending their lifespan and reducing waste—but also prevent stormwater issues plaguing urban areas. Even shallow rooftop gardens can retain a significant portion of rainfall, alleviating pressure on storm drainage and sewer systems. Moreover, these living roofs have a positive impact on building performance. By cooling the structure through evapotranspiration, they lessen the need for energy-intensive temperature control, resulting in cost savings. Plus, the lush greenery acts as a shield, blocking the sun’s radiant energy from penetrating the building envelope. Rooftop gardens also play a crucial role in supporting dwindling insect and bird populations. With a carefully planned design, they provide vital habitats and food sources, catering to specific species’ needs and migration patterns. Shelter from predators and nesting spaces complete the package, fostering biodiversity amidst concrete jungles. Let’s not underestimate the power of aesthetics as an ecosystem service. Though subjective, everyone yearns for a picturesque garden view, a respite from dreary black rooftops. Even small green roofs at home or apartment levels offer recreational opportunities, allowing people to unwind and reconnect with the natural world. Imagine all these ecosystem services harmoniously combined on a single rooftop. Clever designs and proper support can replicate past environmental services, benefitting urban dwellers and communities alike. It’s time to embrace these green oases and bring back the beauty and functionality of nature in our cities. Let’s strive for more sustainable and vibrant rooftops, embracing the potential they hold. Ed Snodgrass is a horticulture specialist who has consulted on green roof projects across the world. He collaborates on green roof research with academic institutions and often lectures at universities and conferences. Meadow Gardens

Beyond being lawn replacements, these expanses of grasses and wildflowers can hold great ecological and aesthetic value. By James Golden As people wrestle with the challenges of gardening in a time of rapidly changing climate and unpredictable weather, the apparent simplicity of a meadow garden can seem appealing. To the eyes of many, the sweep of wind across a grassy meadow brings life to the landscape, stirring emotions and a feeling of closeness with the natural world. Their visual appeal and “simplicity” allow meadows to fit effortlessly into many different settings. So, what exactly is a meadow? It’s an open expanse of grass and wildflowers, devoid of trees, and brimming with biodiversity. It can be any size, and it can be established with seed or small plants. Its benefits are many, chief among them, enhancing biodiversity. Meadows nourish pollinators, offering a variety of habitats for insects to lay eggs, find shelter, and survive the winter. Birds and invertebrates feast on the nectar, while caterpillars and their avian predators find sustenance in the leaves and flowers. Moreover, meadows’ robust root systems work tirelessly to sequester carbon. And unlike chemically laden lawns, meadows require no harmful treatments or expensive maintenance crews. Because of the ubiquity of grass lawns, most meadows are probably conceived as lawn replacements. The toxic cocktail of chemicals necessary to maintain a pristine lawn make that lawn a very unhealthy place. Far from helping biodiversity, lawns kill insects and other wildlife. They have no ecological value. Creating your own meadow garden can be a personal and rewarding endeavor. Enlisting the expertise of a trained designer ensures success, but if you prefer a DIY approach, be sure to dive into the intricacies of meadow establishment and maintenance through informative books and resources. It’s crucial to recognize that meadows offer far more than just being replacements for traditional lawns. Look no further than Chicago’s Lurie Garden, a masterpiece by Dutch designer Piet Oudolf. Nestled in the city’s heart, it boasts intricate pathways, plazas, watercourses, and amenities—a true urban marvel. Alternatively, marvel at the Glenstone Museum near Washington, D.C., where meadow expert Larry Weaner collaborated with PWP Landscape Architects to craft a sprawling 300-acre meadow garden surrounding the prestigious museum. A meadow garden can be as simple or elaborate as your resources and aspirations allow. The possibilities are vast and diverse, awaiting you to explore and embrace their enchanting beauty. James Golden is a celebrated garden maker and thinker whose garden, Federal Twist, has featured in numerous publications including The New York Times, Gardens Illustrated, the Financial Times, the Wall Street Journal, Horticulture, Elle Décor, Better Homes and Gardens, and in several garden books. James recently published a new book on his garden—The View from Federal Twist: a New Way of Thinking about Gardens, Nature and Ourselves. In Memoriam: Peter P. Blanchard Ill (1951-2022) Peter Blanchard worked closely with the Garden Conservancy for 20 years and was a member of the Conservancy’s Society of Fellows with his wife, Sofia. He grew up on the Greenwood Gardens property in Essex County, NJ, which his parents improved and wished to preserve long-term for the public use. After his father passed away, Peter and Sofia proceeded with this vision by partnering with the Garden Conservancy in the early 2000s. After a period of temporary management by the Conservancy, Greenwood Gardens opened its gates as a non-profit public garden and embarked on a journey of major restorations and renovations. Peter cited great fulfillment gained from protecting the garden for others and spending countless hours sharing insights with visitors. In 2016, Peter published Greenwood: A Path to Nature and the Past, a history of the garden. In 2021, the Garden Club of America awarded Greenwood with its prestigious Zone Historic Preservation Commendation.

In Memoriam: Dame Angela Lansbury (1925-2022) Acclaimed actor Angela Lansbury, a founding Honorary Chair of the Garden Conservancy, holds a special place in our hearts. Her illustrious career spanning over seven decades, adorned with six Tony Awards and numerous Golden Globe Awards, has left an indelible mark on both the United States and the United Kingdom. However, it was her journey as an ardent gardener that truly touched our souls. During the 1970s, she became an enthusiastic gardener after she moved to County Cork, Ireland, with her husband, Peter Shaw and two children. The house they bought at the time was on 20 acres with a walled garden. In 1989, when founders Anne and Frank Cabot formed an Advisory Committee to help launch the Garden Conservancy as a nonprofit, they asked Lansbury to serve as Honorary Chair. She attended the inaugural meeting that year and remained involved for years afterward, even serving as Honorary Chair of the organization’s 25th Anniversary Celebration in 2014.

In Memoriam: Evelyn Moore McGee (1935-2022) Patti McGee was a cornerstone of the Garden Conservancy’s foundation, anchoring the newly evolving national organization firmly in the Southeast from her home base in Charleston, SC. Her boundless talent as a plantswoman and her profound reverence for Southern garden heritage made her an invaluable asset to the organization. Patti was recruited by Frank Cabot for the Advisory Committee that would launch the Conservancy in 1989. She was elected to the Board of Directors in 1991 and served for 24 years before retiring with the title Director Emerita. Patti filled vitally important roles on the board: chairing the Preservation Project Selection Committee for five years, serving on the Long Range Planning Committee, expanding the Open Days program, and hosting garden-study tours for the Society of Fellows. Patti was a dedicated, hands-on advocate for the preservation of important Southern gardens, including the Elizabeth Lawrence Garden and Montrose in North Carolina and the Pearl Fryar Garden in South Carolina. She and her husband Peter welcomed many new members and Open Days hosts to the Conservancy. The couple generously provided for the Conservancy’s future success with a bequest, in addition to their loyal annual support.

2022 ANNUAL REPORT I THE GARDEN CONSERVANCY 19

In Memoriam: Posy L. Krehbiel (1938-2022) Posy Krehbiel, an esteemed former Conservancy Board Member, leaves behind a profound impact on the world of gardening and a cherished legacy of her time with the organization. Her involvement in the Open Days program is a testament to her love for sharing the beauty of gardens with others. At the heart of her horticultural journey was her beloved English garden, Camp Rosemary, a masterpiece of hedges, trees, and lush flower beds carefully curated over decades. It consistently ranked as one of the most significant private gardens in America and was featured in the book Gardens of the North Shore of Chicago by author and Conservancy Chair Emeritus Ben Lenhardt, solidifying her reputation as a gardener of exceptional talent and vision. With a welcoming demeanor, Posy opened Camp Rosemary to countless visitors. It was a highlight of the 1997 Open Days program on Chicago’s North Shore, the first year the program expanded beyond the East Coast. During its tenure on the Open Days schedule, her garden welcomed hundreds of enthusiasts and was one of the most anticipated visits of the season. Posy also played an active part in the gardening community in the Chicago area. She sat on the Chicago Horticultural Society Board as well the Lake Forest Garden Club’s Executive Board, where she further shared her expertise and passion.
