BERMONDSEY PANORAMIC ROOF GARDEN BRIEF

SOLUTION

OUTCOME

A fantastic roof top space, with sweeping panoramic views of London and a generous footprint. The garden was previously landscaped with soft wood, which had rotted and failed to stand the test of time. Our client asked us to develop a design using aesthetically pleasing yet durable materials and to combine this with low maintenance planting that would add a naturalistic, colourful and soft feel to the space. The new garden design for the roof needed to include a dining area to take in the views, an outdoor kitchen and cosy lounge seating area. Lighting should be included, but nothing that would overpower the City skyscape.

Access on to the roof terrace via a staircase skylight creates a divide in the space, naturally separating out a small secluded area. We developed a design for a high-backed corner bench to provide comfortable seating, whilst creating some shelter from wind in the evenings. The main open area has been broken up with geometric shaped beds, that echo the shapes of nearby city buildings and are filled with both evergreen structural plants, such as Pinus cloud trees, and colourful nectar rich flowers, such as Salvia and Scabiosa. The main planter beds are edged with hard wood, with a deeper than usual profile to allow additional seating for parties and get togethers.

Composite timber effect decking was chosen for the main surface, to provide a practical and durable solution to withstand the elements.

‘Millboard’ Limed Oak offers a light yet subtle finish, that sits perfectly with the real hardwood. As you move through the space, the decking changes direction to introduce the main dining and entertaining area, as the surface sweeps away from the cosier lounge seating area.

A versatile and attractive outside living space has been added to a unique factory conversion building, offering the owners an escape from the world below. With practical, yet beautiful spaces for relaxing, entertaining and cooking.

The planting gives an established garden feel, which was popular with wildlife even at an early stage of the garden’s development, that softens the whole space and creates a relaxing, peaceful feel throughout.

Subtle lighting extends the usability of the roof garden and creates a different feel and mood as the sun sets.

COVENT GARDEN PENTHOUSE ROOFTOP BRIEF

SOLUTION

OUTCOME

Hidden behind the impressive Grade II listed façade of a Bedford Street Penthouse, this purpose-built roof terrace was newly developed.

Our client asked us to develop a number of concepts for how the space could be used with flexibility.

They wanted us to provide comfortable seating for relaxation and a more formal dining arrangement.

Another requirement was to set in planting that attracted wildlife, provided colour and scent. We also needed to specify materials that would soften the hard lines of the new build extension, whilst retaining the high specification finish of the existing development.

Getting to know how our client would use the space was crucial to agreeing the final design. Flexibility was absolutely key and during our concept discussions it became clear this scheme needed some engineering to make it work. We designed the planters as 14 individual units, hand crafted from sustainably sourced hardwood by our carpenters. Larger units were built to provide stability and freestanding plant supports in permanent situations for the taller plants. This allowed them to establish and soften the building, whilst not compromising the integrity of the walls or waterproofing in the future. The remainder of planters were built with wheels, hidden through careful design to enable our client to move the planters as required for dinner, drinks, additional privacy from neighbouring properties or simply because they wanted a change in layout. This carefully considered planning allowed a generously proportioned sofa and a dining set with stacking chairs to be accommodated without compromise.

Planting evergreen screens has given a year-round sense of privacy to the terrace and covers unsightly views, whilst more attractive views, such as architectural highlights of the London Coliseum, are framed by soft transparent grasses and delicate flowers. Nectar rich flowering plants and scented Jasmine sit alongside a bee box and a very urban apple tree.

Herbs for cooking and cocktails, including lemon verbena, tarragon and thyme, provide a useful addition to the generous planting scheme.

MARYLEBONE TERRACE GARDEN BRIEF

SOLUTION

OUTCOME

This former ‘bridge’ between two mews properties provided a very unique opportunity to develop outdoor space for our client to enjoy.

The brief was to create privacy using plants on the sides, and particularly above, where the space was overlooked. Seating, lighting and atmosphere were all high priorities to make this tiny space feel truly special.

We designed and installed a vast arch in sections, that was planted with mature evergreen jasmine to provide intimacy and atmosphere.

We then carefully ran warm micro lights through the foliage, for additional effect in the evening.

Brushed brass down lighters were installed, for practical way finding and lanterns are placed for additional effect. To marry the detail and finishes of the interior of the property, we sourced reclaimed timber to construct bespoke seating.

We worked with the client’s interior designer to find a solution for soft furnishings and dressing the final space to the client’s requirements.

Gaps in the planting provide adequate opportunity for soaking up the morning sun on the seating area and create shadows across the rustic timber floor.

The previously exposed area is now a secluded get away, for relaxation and entertaining day or night. Attention to detail in the planting, finishes and accessories give a rich character to the space and although a small area, there is lots of interest all year around. The vista from the property is deceptive and gives the impression the foliage-laden tunnel leads to a larger garden space beyond.

We commissioned Garden Club London to help us bring a really beautiful residential terrace project to life within the private residence of a well known singer songwriter Client of ours. The ‘garden’ to this particular property is an industrial iron-work bridge which connects our Client’s house to the building opposite. It’s fabulous, but quite exposed and overlooked. We wanted to turn it into a private Secret Garden, formed from a twisty-turny tunnel of green archways and lush planting. We had a design concept in mind and worked with Tony to turn that into a practical and very beautiful landscape design.

He and his team were fantastic at helping work out the perfect mix of plants, which would not only give us the privacy we wanted but a rich and bountiful look all year round. They also helped us create extra layers of character and atmosphere with beautiful pots and planters.

NOTTING HILL LIVING WALL TERRACE BRIEF

SOLUTION

OUTCOME

Our client asked us to transform their dark, shady roof terrace and rear garden of their house in Notting Hill.

The space was small and enclosed by tall brickwork on two sides, which made it feel disproportionate to the rest of the floor space in the property.

Much of the wall space was also covered in pipework, so we needed to look at ways of disguising this, but still allow access for maintenance.

The brief was to incorporate as many plants as possible, without losing too much floor space, lay a lightweight flooring that would not succumb to slippery green mould and implement an atmospheric lighting scheme.

Our client also had two reclaimed factory windows that had been renovated with mirrors fitted, that they wanted us to incorporate into the scheme.

We developed a scheme that covered one wall completely with a living wall, planted with shade tolerant plants that would look attractive all year round.

We clad the pipe work and remaining brick wall with contemporary trellis, allowing access to the pipe work should it be required, and we finished the timber work in Farrow and Ball ‘Oval Room Blue’. The mirrors were set in the centre of the living wall and trellis opposite, to reflect light and greenery and create a sense of additional space from the interior of the property. We selected a composite deck for the surfacing, with a natural oak finish that would not rot or become slippery and set in copper finish uplighters to send warm light across the living wall in the evening.

This space is a perfect example of what can be achieved, even in a very small space, with adequate investment to totally transform the look and feel of both the inside and outside of a property. Lush foliage now cascades across previously dull brick work and creates dramatic texture and colour. The clean and simple lines of the contemporary trellis give a sense of calm, allowing the detail of the planting and reclaimed factory mirrors to sit comfortably within the scheme.

The hard wearing composite ‘Millboard’ decking provides a light and practical alternative to timber decking, whilst not compromising on look and feel.

SHOREDITCH PENTHOUSE ROOF TERRACE BRIEF

SOLUTION

OUTCOME

Our clients were undertaking the renovation and extension of their converted warehouse penthouse that included building a pavilion style extension. The extension is a fantastic highlight of the property and our clients wanted a roof top garden space that would complement the contemporary interior and flow with the architecture. A dining, cooking, lounging area and privacy were all in the remit for transforming the wrap around space.

We used a pedestal and joist system to support an oak effect, non-slip ‘Millboard’ decking, with a light finish that flows effortlessly with the interior surfaces. Working with our bespoke planter suppliers, we trialled a number of concrete-effect finishes in GRP (glass reinforced plastic), before selecting one to give a slightly industrial yet modern finish, contrasting against deep green foliage and a peppering of punchy flowers. The planters were designed to hide various services on the roof at staggered depths and heights and to accommodate a range of plants that suit the various conditions around the three terrace areas.

The three areas of this roof terrace now have slightly different atmospheres, yet maintain a consistent and contemporary look throughout. The seating areas feel secluded and cosy without losing the sense of place and rooftop atmosphere. A range of plants and flowers provide year-round interest, including herbs for cooking outdoors.

The hardwearing surfaces add character and depth to the space and will stand the test of time. A very special space that is a valuable addition to the client’s property and lifestyle.

STOCKWELL URBAN ROOFTOP ESCAPE BRIEF

SOLUTION

OUTCOME

This was a new-build penthouse apartment with a wrap-around roof terrace. Composite deck had been installed by the developer and our client wanted a planting scheme that would feel lush and soft, with denser areas to screen unsightly views and transparent, low planting to make the most of city views. Ornamental plants were required in the seating areas, whilst a section of the terrace was devoted to bespoke planters to accommodate vegetable growing, herbs and salads. An outdoor shower area and upgrade of screening were also required.

The roof was divided into three main areas; kitchen garden, lounge and shower area, creating breaks in the journey through the garden.

We achieved this by introducing archways and ‘pinch points’ using varying shapes and sizes of planters.

This allows for a balanced mix of structural evergreens and a succession of colour throughout the year. A selection of plants were chosen to provide a delicate appearance, whilst being able to cope with exposed rooftop conditions.

The roof top has been transformed into a garden overflowing with flowers and foliage. Each area has a slightly different feel, despite keeping materials and colours to a minimum to increase the feeling of space. The vegetable garden is very productive and has shown what can be achieved in a very small area. The lounge area accommodates generous sized furniture, for maximum comfort without feeling cramped and on hot summer days the shower is a godsend. This is a special place to enjoy evenings after work and weekends tending to the kitchen garden.

A secluded area was chosen to accommodate the outdoor shower and basic screens were upgraded using hardwood in a contemporary vertical finish. Soft lighting adds warmth to the space, whilst not interfering with the city night scape.

Screening was also used to break the wind around the lounge seating area.
