LETTER from the Publisher

As Publisher of C L Magazine, I’m proud to say we are embarking on our 11th year of continuous publication. What an achievement! Since the beginning, our magazine has examined the dynamic intersection of professional achievement and personal fulfillment.

We have been committed to amplifying the voices, stories, and successes of women of color across all industries and walks of life. We understand the unique challenges and extraordinary strengths that define our community’s journey, and we are dedicated to continuing to provide the resources, inspiration, and connections that fuel both career advancement and holistic well-being.

This summer is an historic one for Cleveland – the city will host three national black professional conferences – and we couldn’t be more excited. The National Urban League Conference will be held July 16-19, 2025, and the National Association for Black Journalists Convention takes place August 6-10, 2025. Read about the conferences starting on page 9.

As we continue to grow and evolve, our commitment remains unwavering: to be your trusted partner in achieving professional success and our dedication to uplifting, educating, and providing leadership skills to our young people. We invite you to join us as we continue on this journey of empowerment, growth, and celebration. Together, we are not just breaking barriers; we are building bridges to a future where every woman – regardless of color – can thrive authentically and abundantly.

In the spirit of the greatness in us all,

As I reflect on the 20+ years as Founder and Chairwoman of the Women of Color Foundation, I remember the trials and tribulations in the beginning; our successes along the way; and eventually our growth. Running a nonprofit organization has been a labor of love for me. Thousands of women have benefitted from our training programs, conferences, workshops, and partnerships with community organizations and academic institutions. We are eternally grateful to our advertisers and sponsors – thank you! Our success by the numbers can be found on pages 46 and 47.

LETTER from the

Editor

The last six months just flew by. I was deeply involved in the planning and execution of the National Association of Minority Contractors (NAMC)’s 56th annual conference, which was held here in Cleveland a couple of weeks ago. This being my first time so heavily involved in such an undertaking, I have much respect for all those who dare to put on a national conference! Now that I can relax a bit, I’m looking forward to attending both the National Urban League Conference and the National Association for Black Journalists (NABJ) National Convention. Marsha Mockabee, Rhonda Crowder, Alexandria Boone, as well as many others have been putting in the hard work to ensure that these events are packed with information, opportunities to network, and more ways to get involved in our community (learn more on pages 9-14).

Women Creating Wealth & Impact (WCWI)’s conference is also back this year. In its fourth year, this conference, led by Women of Color Foundation board member Meltrice Sharp, is revolutionizing the way women approach wealth building. It is the premier conference for women who are committed to transforming their financial futures and creating lasting legacies (pages 16-18).

Today’s most effective leaders are those who can navigate complexity, foster innovation, and build genuine connections with their people. How do you become an effective leader in a world where leadership models are constantly being rewritten? Check out “The Leadership Evolution” starting on page 21 to learn more about the new leadership landscape and building your leadership development plan.

Summer is my favorite time of the year. While it’s not always practical to get on a plane for 14 hours to visit some faraway land, there are plenty of arts and cultural events just a few hours away. Check out some world-class music festivals, intimate art fairs and more right here in the Midwest: Chicago, Milwaukee, Detroit, and Minneapolis (see pages 24-27).

If you’re interested in seeing more of the world, but need some guidance with planning, check out “The Smart Traveler’s Playbook: Essential Tips for Young Professionals” (pages 29-33). In it you’ll find how to strategically plan your trip, maximize limited time off, work remote while traveling, and so much more. These tips are helpful for people of any age!

This issue we’ve expanded our book suggestions to be a more comprehensive list of books that every professional should have on their shelf – or on their Kindle. Check them out starting on page 34.

In “Reframing the Narrative about Hospice in Black and Brown Communities,” Hospice of the Western Reserve helps us to understand that choosing hospice does not mean giving up hope, choosing death or turning away from faith –it means giving your loved ones a chance to embrace the end of life with love, intention and grace. This must-read article starts on page 42.

The Women of Color Foundation has been able train thousands of women and girls of color every year. Please look at our “success by the numbers” on pages 46 and 47.

Until next time,

Breaking Financial Barriers: The

Women

Creating Wealth & Impact Conference 2025 The Women Creating Wealth & Impact Conference 2025

Where wealth-building and sisterhood align to create generational change

In a world where women still face significant financial barriers and wage gaps, one conference is revolutionizing how women approach wealth building. The Women Creating Wealth & Impact (WCWI) Conference has emerged as the premier destination for women serious about transforming their financial futures and creating lasting legacies for their families.

Set to take place August 15-17, 2025, at the Marriott East in Warrensville Heights, Ohio, this three-day intensive promises to be more than just another financial literacy event—it’s a movement designed to break cycles of debt and poverty while fostering generational wealth.

The Vision Behind the Movement

WCWI is an organization dedicated to advancing and transforming women’s financial competencies and practices. Their mission is clear: help women impact their legacy by manifesting generational wealth through a safe platform that inspires, empowers, educates, and transforms today’s woman so she can call the shots on all her money matters. What sets this conference apart is its focus on sustainable financial techniques combined with community building. Rather than offering generic financial advice, WCWI provides targeted strategies specifically designed for women who are ready to take control of their financial destiny.

Who This Conference Is For

The WCWI Conference is intentionally designed for five types of visionary women:

The Legacy Builder: You’re focused on leaving a legacy of wealth to your children, but you’re not sure where or how to start. This conference provides the roadmap for creating wealth that extends beyond your lifetime.

The Cycle Breaker: You’re 100% committed to breaking the cycles of debt and poverty within your family. Through proven strategies and community support, you’ll learn how to become the financial turning point in your family tree.

The Wealth Multiplier: You’re ready to learn how to multiply your money and have your money work for you. The conference covers advanced investment strategies, passive income generation, and wealth preservation techniques.

The Community Seeker: You’re seeking a community that will inspire you to do, be, and have more without shaming your money goals. WCWI creates a judgment-free environment where ambitious financial goals are celebrated and supported.

The Action Taker: You’re serious about doing better with your money and you’re ready to make smarter money moves. This isn’t for casual learners—it’s for women committed to implementing real change.

Meet the Visionary: Meltrice Sharp

At the heart of this movement is Meltrice Sharp, a Certified Public Accountant who has transcended traditional accounting to become a wealth-building mentor and community leader. Sharp is leading a movement to redefine generational and community wealth for thousands of people across the country.

Her unique approach combines proven wealth strategies with a deep understanding of the psychological and social barriers women face when building wealth. Through her powerful Women Creating Wealth & Impact events, Sharp has single-handedly transformed the way people view, make, and keep their money to impact the lives of those around them.

Sharp’s dedication to serving has propelled her to reposition those she works with to reach new and impressive financial heights. Her perspective goes beyond individual wealth building to focus on community impact and generational transformation.

Conference Experience: Three Days of Transformation

Comprehensive Programming

The 2025 conference features 24+ informational sessions, providing direct access to an entire team of wealth-building experts who will guide participants through and elevate every area of their finances. Whether you’re an employee or an entrepreneur, new to the job scene or new to retirement, you’ll leave each session with actionable money moves you can implement immediately.

Session Duration and Depth: Each session with wealth mentors lasts 75-105 minutes, providing enough time for both theoretical understanding and practical application. This format ensures participants receive substantial value while maintaining engagement throughout the intensive three-day experience.

Expert Speaker Standards

The conference maintains rigorous standards for its presenters. To be invited as a speaker, experts must have at least 10 years of proven track record in their area of expertise, with many having 20+ years of experience. This ensures participants receive guidance from seasoned professionals who have demonstrated real-world success.

Topics Covered include fundamental wealth-building principles, advanced investment strategies, business development, estate planning, tax optimization, and mindset transformation. The curriculum is designed to address both foundational concepts for beginners and sophisticated strategies for more advanced participants.

The Learning Experience

Practical Application Focus

What distinguishes the WCWI Conference from other financial education events is its emphasis on immediate implementation. The conference is structured to provide participants with actionable strategies they can begin using within 30 days or less.

Real-World Strategies: Rather than theoretical discussions, sessions focus on practical techniques that have been tested and proven in real-world scenarios. Participants learn not just what to do, but how to do it effectively.

Personalized Guidance: With multiple sessions and various experience levels among speakers, participants can find guidance appropriate to their current financial situation while also preparing for their next level of wealth building.

Community Building and Support

The conference creates lasting connections that extend far beyond the three-day event. Participants often form ongoing relationships with fellow attendees, creating accountability partnerships and support networks that continue throughout their wealth-building journeys.

Sisterhood Element: The emphasis on sisterhood and community support addresses one of the most significant barriers women face in wealth building—isolation and lack of peer support for ambitious financial goals.

The Broader Impact

Generational Wealth Focus

The conference’s emphasis on generational wealth distinguishes it from traditional financial literacy programs. Rather than focusing solely on individual financial improvement, WCWI addresses the broader goal of creating wealth that can positively impact families and communities for generations.

Legacy Planning: Sessions cover estate planning, wealth transfer strategies, and teaching children about money, ensuring that wealth building efforts create lasting impact beyond the individual participant.

Community Transformation

By focusing on women as wealth builders, the conference addresses a key demographic that often serves as financial decision-makers for families and has significant influence on community economic development.

Ripple Effect: As women participants implement their learning, the impact extends to their families, businesses, and communities, creating broader economic empowerment beyond the individual level.

Success Stories and Track Record

The WCWI Conference has built a strong reputation over multiple years, with 2022, 2023, and 2024 conferences each contributing to the organization’s growing impact. Participant testimonials and conference recaps demonstrate real-world results and lasting transformation.

Proven Results: The conference’s track record shows that participants don’t just gain knowledge—they implement strategies that create measurable improvements in their financial situations.

Preparation for Success

Pre-Conference Mindset

To maximize the conference experience, participants should come prepared with specific financial goals and a commitment to implementation. The intensive nature of the programming rewards those who arrive ready to learn and act.

Goal Setting: Before attending, participants should identify their current financial challenges and establish clear objectives for what they want to achieve through the conference experience.

Post-Conference Implementation

The real value of the conference emerges in the weeks and months following the event. Participants who successfully implement their learning often see significant improvements in their financial situations within the first 30-90 days.

Accountability Systems: The relationships and strategies developed during the conference provide ongoing support for implementation, increasing the likelihood of long-term success.

A Movement for Change

The Women Creating Wealth & Impact Conference represents more than an educational event—it’s a movement challenging traditional narrative about women and money. By creating a space where wealth-building and sisterhood align, WCWI is helping to rewrite the story of women’s financial empowerment. Cultural Shift: The conference contributes to a broader cultural change that normalizes and celebrates women’s financial ambitions, creating role models and support systems for future generations.

For women ready to break financial barriers, build generational wealth, and connect with a community of like-minded wealth builders, the WCWI Conference offers an unparalleled opportunity for transformation. In a world where financial education often feels intimidating or inaccessible, WCWI creates a space where women can learn, grow, and thrive together.

The question isn’t whether you can afford to attend—it’s whether you can afford to miss this opportunity to join a movement that’s redefining what’s possible for women and money.

Ready to transform your financial future? Registration for the Women Creating Wealth & Impact Conference 2025 is now open. Join the movement at womencreatingwealth. com and take the first step toward the wealth-building journey that will change not just your life, but the lives of generations to come.

The Leadership Evolution: Building Tomorrow’s Leaders Today

How

to develop authentic leadership skills that drive real results in a rapidly changing

world

Leadership isn’t what it used to be. Gone are the days when commanding from the corner office and issuing directives was enough to inspire teams and drive results. Today’s most effective leaders are those who can navigate complexity, foster innovation, and build genuine connections with their people—all while adapting to an ever-changing business landscape.

The question isn’t whether you need to develop your leadership skills, but how to do it effectively in a world where traditional leadership models are being rewritten daily.

The New Leadership Landscape

Modern leadership development faces unique challenges that previous generations never encountered. Remote and hybrid work environments have fundamentally altered how we connect with and motivate our teams. The rapid pace of technological change demands leaders who can not only adapt quickly but also guide others through constant transformation.

The statistics tell a compelling story: Organizations with strong leadership development programs are 2.4 times more likely to hit their financial targets, yet 71% of companies report that their leaders aren’t equipped to lead their organization into the future. This gap represents both a challenge and an enormous opportunity for those willing to invest in their leadership growth.

Core Competencies for Modern Leaders

Emotional Intelligence in Action

The most impactful leaders today understand that emotional intelligence isn’t just a nice-to-have skill—it’s the foundation of effective leadership. This means developing the ability to recognize and manage your own emotions while understanding and influencing the emotions of others.

Practical application: Start each team meeting by taking the temperature of the room. Notice who seems engaged, who appears stressed, and who might be checking out mentally. Adjust your communication style and agenda accordingly. This simple practice can dramatically improve team dynamics and productivity.

Adaptive Communication

Every person on your team processes information differently. Some need detailed explanations, others prefer high-level overviews. Some respond to data and logic, while others are motivated by vision and emotion. Effective leaders learn to flex their communication style to match their audience.

Development strategy: For one week, consciously adapt your communication style for each person you interact with. Notice how they respond when you match their preferred communication method. This awareness will become second nature with practice.

Decision-Making Under Uncertainty

Today’s leaders must make decisions with incomplete information, tight deadlines, and high stakes. The ability to gather relevant input quickly, weigh options efficiently, and commit to a course of action while remaining flexible enough to pivot when needed is crucial.

Framework for better decisions: Use the 40-70 rule—make decisions when you have between 40-70% of the information you wish you had. Below 40%, you’re being reckless. Above 70%, you’re being overly cautious and may miss opportunities.

Building Your Leadership Development Plan

Start with Self-Awareness

The journey to effective leadership begins with honest selfassessment. Understanding your natural leadership style, strengths, and areas for growth provides the foundation for all other development efforts.

Action step: Seek feedback from peers, direct reports, and supervisors using a 360-degree feedback tool or informal conversations. Ask specific questions about your communication effectiveness, decision-making process, and ability to inspire others.

Create Stretch Experiences

Leadership skills develop through challenging experiences that push you outside your comfort zone. Look for opportunities to lead cross-functional projects, mentor others, or take on roles that require you to influence without authority.

Opportunity identification: Volunteer to lead your company’s next major initiative, join a nonprofit board, or mentor highpotential employees. These experiences provide real-world practice in a relatively safe environment.

Develop Others

One of the most effective ways to strengthen your own leadership abilities is to develop others. Teaching leadership concepts forces you to think deeply about what works and why, while creating a positive impact that extends beyond your immediate sphere.

Implementation idea: Identify two people in your organization who show leadership potential and commit to mentoring them for six months. Focus on providing them with stretch assignments and regular feedback.

The Role of Continuous Learning

Leadership development isn’t a destination—it’s an ongoing journey. The most effective leaders are voracious learners who actively seek out new perspectives, challenge their assumptions, and continuously refine their approach.

Learning Sources That Matter

Books and podcasts provide foundational knowledge, but real-world application is where true learning happens. Combine theoretical learning with practical experimentation. Read about a leadership concept, then immediately find ways to apply it in your current role.

Peer learning groups offer invaluable opportunities to discuss challenges and solutions with other leaders facing similar situations. Consider joining or starting a leadership book club or mastermind group.

Executive coaching provides personalized feedback and accountability that can accelerate your development significantly. Even a few sessions with a skilled coach can provide insights that might take years to develop on your own.

Measuring Your Progress

Leadership development without measurement is just wishful thinking. Establish clear metrics to track your progress and adjust your approach based on what you learn.

Quantitative Measures

Track team performance metrics like engagement scores, retention rates, and productivity measures. While these don’t tell the whole story, they provide objective data about your leadership effectiveness.

Qualitative Feedback

Regular one-on-one conversations with your team members provide rich insights into your leadership impact. Ask questions like: “What’s one thing I could do differently to better support you?” and “When do you feel most motivated and engaged?”

Personal Reflection

Maintain a leadership journal where you reflect on daily interactions, decisions, and outcomes. Weekly reviews of these entries will reveal patterns and opportunities for improvement that might otherwise go unnoticed.

The Compound Effect of Leadership Investment

The most successful leaders understand that leadership development is a long-term investment with compound returns. Small, consistent improvements in your leadership effectiveness create exponential improvements in your team’s performance and your organization’s results.

Consider this: A 10% improvement in your leadership effectiveness might lead to a 15% improvement in your team’s performance, which could translate to significantly better business outcomes. Over time, these improvements compound, creating dramatic differences in career trajectory and organizational impact.

Your Leadership Legacy

Every interaction you have as a leader creates ripple effects that extend far beyond the immediate moment. The leader you become today influences not just your current team’s performance, but also shapes the leadership capabilities of everyone you develop along the way.

The path forward starts with a single decision: the commitment to approach leadership development with the same rigor and intentionality you bring to other important aspects of your career. Whether you’re a first-time manager or a seasoned executive, there are always new levels of leadership effectiveness to unlock.

The question isn’t whether you have time to develop your leadership skills—it’s whether you can afford not to. In a world where the pace of change continues to accelerate, the leaders who invest in continuous development will be the ones who thrive, while those who rely on outdated approaches will struggle to keep up.

Your leadership journey starts now. The only question is: what will your first step be?

Ready to take your leadership to the next level? Start by identifying one specific leadership skill you want to develop this month, then create a plan with specific actions, timelines, and accountability measures. Remember: great leaders aren’t born—they’re developed through intention, practice, and continuous learning.

The Smart Traveler’s Playbook:

Essential Tips for Young Professionals

How to maximize your travel experiences while building your career and staying within budget

Your twenties and thirties are prime time for exploration. You have more flexibility than you’ll likely have later in life, but also face unique challenges: limited budgets, demanding work schedules, and the pressure to establish yourself professionally. The good news? With smart planning and strategic choices, you can see the world without derailing your career or emptying your bank account.

Here’s your comprehensive guide to traveling intelligently as a young professional.

The Art of Strategic Trip Planning

Timing Is Everything

Shoulder season travel is your secret weapon. Visit Europe in late spring or early fall, hit Southeast Asia during the dry season, or explore South America in their autumn months. You’ll save 30-50% on flights and accommodations while avoiding the worst crowds.

Work calendar optimization: Plan major trips around natural work lulls. Many industries have predictable slow periods—advertising agencies quiet down in January, retail calms after the holidays, and tech companies often have lighter schedules in late summer. Use these windows strategically.

The Friday flight hack: Book flights that depart on Friday afternoons. You’ll often find better deals than weekend departures, and you can maximize your time off by essentially getting a free travel day.

Budget-Conscious Booking Strategies

Flight flexibility pays off: Use Google Flights’ calendar view to see price variations across different dates. Being flexible with your departure and return dates by just 2-3 days can save hundreds of dollars.

The 24-hour rule: Many airlines allow free cancellations within 24 hours of booking. Use this to your advantage— book when you see a good deal, then continue monitoring prices. If they drop further, cancel and rebook.

Accommodation mixing: Don’t default to hotels for every night. Mix hostels, Airbnbs, and hotels based on your itinerary. Stay in a hostel in expensive cities to save money, then splurge on a nice hotel for special occasions or when you need to recharge.

Maximizing Limited Time Off

The Extended Weekend Formula

Transform a standard weekend into a mini-adventure by strategically using your vacation days. Take Friday and Monday off to create a four-day weekend, or use a single vacation day on Friday to extend your weekend to three days.

The travel math: A long weekend in a nearby city often provides more relaxation and cultural immersion than you’d expect. Three days in Montreal, a weekend in Austin, or four days in Portland can be incredibly rejuvenating without requiring a week off work.

Working Remotely While Traveling

Location scouting: Before booking, research WiFi quality, coworking spaces, and time zone considerations. Apps like Nomad List provide real-world data on internet speeds and work-friendly locations.

The hybrid approach: Plan trips that combine work and leisure. Spend the first few days of your trip working remotely from a coffee shop or coworking space, then fully disconnect for the remainder of your time.

Communication strategy: Set clear expectations with your team about your availability. Share your itinerary with key colleagues and establish specific check-in times rather than promising to be available “whenever needed.”

Smart Money Management on the Road

The 50-30-20 Travel Rule

Adapt the classic budgeting rule for travel: 50% for essentials (flights, accommodation, transportation), 30% for experiences (tours, activities, nice meals), and 20% for spontaneous adventures or emergencies.

Track as you go: Use apps like Splitwise or Trail Wallet to monitor spending in real-time. It’s much easier to adjust your budget mid-trip than to deal with overspending when you return home.

Credit Card Strategy

Travel rewards optimization: Choose one travel credit card and use it consistently to maximize points. The Chase Sapphire Preferred or Capital One Venture are excellent starting points for young professionals.

Foreign transaction fees: Never pay foreign transaction fees. Numerous cards offer fee-free international spending, and this small detail can save you hundreds on international trips.

Currency exchange: Use ATMs at local banks rather than airport exchange counters. You’ll get better rates and avoid hefty fees.

Packing Like a Pro

The One-Week Wardrobe

Pack as if you’re going away for one week, regardless of trip length. Choose versatile pieces that can be mixed, matched, and layered. Stick to a color palette of 2-3 colors to ensure everything coordinates.

The laundry strategy: Plan to do laundry once per week. This approach dramatically reduces luggage weight and gives you flexibility to buy items during your trip.

Tech Essentials

Portable power: A high-capacity portable battery and universal adapter are non-negotiable. Your phone is your camera, map, translator, and entertainment system—keep it charged.

Backup plans: Store copies of important documents in cloud storage and email them to yourself. Take photos of your passport, driver’s license, and credit cards.

Communication tools: Download offline maps, translation apps, and transportation apps before you leave. Don’t rely on having constant internet access.

Networking and Professional Development

Travel as Career Investment

Industry connections: Attend local meetups, conferences, or professional events in your destination. LinkedIn and Eventbrite are excellent resources for finding relevant gatherings.

Cultural competency: International travel develops skills that are increasingly valuable in today’s global economy. Document your experiences and be prepared to articulate how travel has enhanced your professional capabilities.

Content creation: Share your travel experiences thoughtfully on professional platforms. A well-written LinkedIn post about lessons learned while navigating a foreign business culture can enhance your professional brand.

Maintaining Professional Momentum

Pre-trip preparation: Complete critical projects before leaving and set up your colleagues for success in your absence. A well-planned departure protects your professional reputation.

Strategic sharing: Share highlights of your trip with colleagues, but avoid overwhelming them with constant updates. A few thoughtful photos and stories can build relationships without appearing unprofessional.

Health and Safety Essentials

Staying Healthy on the Road

Travel insurance: Don’t skip this. A single medical emergency abroad can cost thousands. Many credit cards offer travel insurance but verify coverage details before relying on it.

Medication management: Bring medications in original containers with prescriptions. Research pharmacy availability at your destination and know the generic names of any medications you take regularly.

Jet lag strategy: Use apps like Timeshifter to optimize your sleep schedule before and during travel. Proper jet lag management can save you days of recovery time.

Safety Without Paranoia

Local awareness: Research common scams and safety concerns specific to your destination. Five minutes of research can prevent hours of frustration.

Emergency contacts: Share your itinerary with trusted friends or family members. Check in regularly, especially when traveling solo.

Trust your instincts: If a situation feels wrong, remove yourself from it. Your safety is worth more than any experience or photo opportunity.

Making the Most of Every Trip

The Experience Investment Mindset

Quality over quantity: It’s better to fully experience three destinations than to rush through ten. Deep exploration creates more meaningful memories and often costs less than constant movement.

Local immersion: Eat where locals eat, use public transportation, and seek experiences that most tourists miss. These authentic moments often become the most treasured memories.

Document thoughtfully: Take photos, but don’t let photography consume the experience. Spend time being present and absorbing the moment without a camera between you and the world.

Building Your Travel Skills

Language learning: Download Duolingo or Babbel before you leave. Even basic phrases in the local language can dramatically improve your travel experience.

Navigation mastery: Learn to read maps and navigate without GPS. This skill increases your confidence and often leads to unexpected discoveries.

Cultural research: Understand basic cultural norms and etiquette. This knowledge shows respect for local customs and can prevent embarrassing mistakes.

The Long-Term Travel Strategy

Building a Sustainable Travel Lifestyle

Automatic savings: Set up automatic transfers to a dedicated travel fund. Even $100 per month creates $1,200 annually for adventures.

Skills development: Choose destinations that align with your professional or personal development goals. Learning Spanish in Guatemala or studying art history in Italy can enhance both your resume and your life.

Relationship building: Maintain connections with people you meet while traveling. These relationships can lead to future opportunities, both personal and professional.

Planning for the Future

Document everything: Keep detailed records of your travels, including receipts, photos, and reflections. This documentation becomes invaluable for tax purposes if you travel for work, and provides rich material for future job interviews.

Skill transferability: Recognize how travel skills translate to professional capabilities. Problem-solving, adaptability, and cross-cultural communication are highly valued in today’s job market.

Your Travel Journey Starts Now

The perfect time to travel is now. You’ll never have more energy, fewer responsibilities, or greater flexibility than you do in your twenties and thirties. The experiences you gain, skills you develop, and perspectives you broaden will serve you throughout your career and life.

Start small: Your first international trip doesn’t need to be a month-long expedition. A long weekend in Montreal or a week in Costa Rica can provide incredible experiences while building your confidence for bigger adventures.

Think investment, not expense: Smart travel is an investment in yourself. The cultural awareness, problem-solving skills, and global perspective you develop will pay dividends throughout your career.

Be strategic: Plan your travels around your career goals and personal interests. The young professional who travels to South Korea to understand emerging tech trends or visits Germany to study sustainable manufacturing isn’t just having fun—they’re building expertise that could shape their career trajectory.

The world is waiting, and you’re at the perfect stage of life to explore it thoughtfully and strategically. Your future self will thank you for the experiences you create and the skills you develop today.

Ready to plan your next adventure? Start by identifying one destination that aligns with your personal or professional interests, then create a realistic budget and timeline. Remember: the best travel experiences come from smart planning, not necessarily big spending.

Reframing the Narrative about Hospice in Black and Brown Communities

For many families in Black and Brown communities, the word “hospice” can feel like a final blow. It’s often associated with loss, surrender or even spiritual failure. There’s a belief that choosing hospice means giving up hope, choosing death or turning away from faith. Some fear it means abandoning a loved one or breaking a promise to keep fighting. Others fear it conflicts with their prayers for healing and miracles.

These beliefs—shaped by culture, lived experience, and generations of systemic inequity—can prevent people from accessing care that brings comfort, dignity and peace during life’s most sacred chapter. And because of this, families may miss the opportunity to experience what hospice truly offers: A chance to embrace the end of life with love, intention and grace.

At Hospice of the Western Reserve, we want to change that narrative.

Hospice is not giving up.

It’s

taking control.

Hospice care is not about hastening death. It’s about improving the quality of life when a cure is no longer possible. It surrounds patients and families with a team of professionals— nurses, aides, social workers, chaplains, grief counselors and volunteers—who work together as a team to manage pain, address emotional and spiritual needs, and provide guidance through an incredibly difficult time.

In communities of color, especially Black and Brown communities, the decision to enter hospice is often delayed or never made. That delay can lead to unnecessary suffering, both for the patient and their family. Historical mistrust of the healthcare system plays a major role. For generations, people of color have experienced unequal treatment, dismissed concerns and cultural insensitivity in medical settings. That history can make it hard to believe that the system will provide compassionate care now, especially when it matters most.

In addition, cultural expectations around strength and caregiving—“We don’t put our people in homes,” “We take care of our own”—can make accepting outside help feel like failure. And faith, which is often the cornerstone of strength, can make the concept of hospice seem contradictory. “If I believe in healing, how can I accept hospice?” “If I trust God, how can I talk about death?”

We understand these questions. We hear them often. And we want families to know: Hospice is not the opposite of faith. In fact, for many, it’s a reflection of faith. It is an act of love and surrender—not to death, but to the care and dignity your loved one deserves. Choosing hospice doesn’t mean giving up hope. It means shifting hope: from hope for a cure to hope for comfort, connection and a peaceful passing.

Representation and Relationship Matter

At Hospice of the Western Reserve, we believe trust begins with relationship—and relationship begins with representation. Our team includes professionals from diverse racial and cultural backgrounds who understand the importance of family roles, spiritual beliefs and cultural traditions. We meet people where they are. We listen. We honor what matters most to them.

We also show up before a crisis. Through partnerships with churches, senior centers and civic groups, we provide information about hospice care early—so families can make informed decisions without fear or pressure.

Hospice care is a benefit covered by Medicare, Medicaid and most private insurance. That means many families receive support at no cost. Services include comfort-focused medications, home visits from nurses and aides, medical equipment like hospital beds or oxygen, spiritual counseling, and grief support for families—for up to 13 months after a loss. Patients and families stay in control. Our job is to support, not take over.

A Gift of Love and Legacy

Hospice is not about giving up—it’s about choosing how we live at the end. It’s not about letting go of faith, but deepening it. It creates space to say the things that need to be said, to laugh at old stories, to hold hands, to weep without fear and to be fully present.

We often hear from families, “I wish we had called sooner.” Once they experience the peace hospice can bring, they see it not as surrender—but as a gift. A gift of comfort. A gift of presence. A gift of love.

If someone you love is living with a serious illness, now is the time to start the conversation. Not in panic, but in peace. Ask questions. Explore your options. Understand what’s possible.

Hospice is not a last resort. It’s a powerful, compassionate choice. And it’s one everyone deserves to fully understand—and to fully benefit from.
