It’s an exciting time for ORV~WBC as we continue to flourish with over 900 certified WBEs and more than 30 corporate members in our service region of Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia.

We’re so glad that you’re here with us in Cleveland for what promises to be our best and most memorable supplier diversity conference yet! ORV~WBC is committed to affording the platform for our corporate members and WBEs to connect and essentially aid in increased business opportunities for first-and second-tier supplier strategic sourcing. We’ve packed all three days with thought provoking workshops, rousing presenters, and chances to meet amazing professionals from all over the service area who are dedicated and enthusiastic about integration of woman-owned businesses in their supply chain.

I’d like to thank each of you for attending and bringing your industry expertise to our annual event. Welcome to Cleveland and the 7th annual “Catch the Wave” conference with the theme of “Driving Principles of Success”. One of my favorite quotes comes courtesy of Whitney M. Young, Jr. who stated “It is better to be prepared for an opportunity and not have one than to have an opportunity and not be prepared”. The Catch the Wave conference has become the vehicle for women owned businesses to acquire the tools necessary to DRIVE toward SUCCESS and prepare for the opportunities that await them.

Each year, we look for ways to enhance your experience. This year’s conference begins with a conversation between five (5) dynamic women operating everyday in male dominated industries. They will share the challenges, successes and what DRIVES them. We’ve added a business resource area of organizations whose sole purpose is providing information that DRIVES growth SUCCESS. The WBE Showcase is back, putting our region’s WBEs front and center for connection and collaboration with other WBEs and corporations. This year’s Trailblazer is the phenomenal Alexandria Johnson Boone, President of GAP Communication and Founder of the Women of Color Foundation. And, the dynamic Robin Fisher Roffer from Big Fish Marketing is coming home to Cleveland to deliver the Keynote Luncheon address. These two women personify what it means to not only push toward success, but bring others with you along the way!

From there, she continued in Northeast and Central PA as the morning and midday Meteorologist. Kristi later earned a degree in Broadcasting & Communications along with Public Relations and then won the title of ‘Miss Missouri USA 2006. Kristi has been awarded “The Times Leader’s 40 Under Forty,” for successful individuals who have excelled in their professions and communities in Northeast & Central PA. She actively supports community organizations including Go Red for Women, Children’s Miracle Network, and the American Diabetes Association.

In 1998, Danita came to NewsChannel5 and became a part of the “Morning Exchange,” where she did live feature reports. After two years, Danita moved to WJLA-TV in Washington, D.C., where she anchored the news on weekends and did entertainment reports during the week. But Danita’s love for the Cleveland area quickly brought her back to WEWS in September of 2000, when she stepped into the anchor position for “Good Morning Cleveland” and NewsChannel5 at noon. In 2004, Danita received an Emmy when Good Morning Cleveland won best Morning Newscast. After anchoring the morning show for six years, she was promoted to the evening anchor position she holds today. Danita was recently recognized for her work by being inducted into the Ohio Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2010.

Dawn Lindsey, a South African native, found NextGen Fuel in the US and South Africa.

She is one of the first black females in the Fuel and Energy space. NextGen Fuel was named “Minority Business of the Year” by the Dayton Business Journal, acknowledged by the Ohio Governor’s Office, as well as the South African Ambassador. Dawn advocates for women and children globally and supports many community and enterprise development programs. She is no newcomer to a male-dominant industry. In her previous endeavors, she was one of the first four black women-owned construction companies in South Africa.

Jenell Ross PRESIDENT, BOB ROSS AUTO GROUP

Jenell is the only second generation African-American Woman Automobile Dealer in the Country. She accepted the leadership role of the dealerships in July 1997 after the untimely death of her father Robert P. Ross Sr. Jenell’s national board affiliations include the 2013 Chairwoman of The American International Automobile Dealers Association (AIADA), in which she was the first African-American and the second woman to hold the position in the organizations 45 year history. She’s also a member of the National Automobile Dealers Association, the National Association of Minority Automobile Dealers, General Motors Minority Dealers Association and the Chrysler Minority Dealer Association. Jenell has recently been appointed by Governor John R. Kasich to the Motor Vehicle Dealers Board.

President/CEO GAP Communications Group and Chairwoman/Founder, Women of Color Foundation Alex has gained state and national acclaim as President and CEO of GAP Communications Group, a full service public relations, advertising, marketing and special events firm based in Cleveland. It is one of the most successful minority-owned event and communications firms in Ohio, artfully telling their clients’ stories to the world and taking on special projects such as successfully crafting the media persona of NBA-great LeBron James.

In addition to her achievements as a small business entrepreneur, Alex founded the Women of Color Foundation in 2005 and remains its chairwoman.

“GAP Communications is my occupation; Women of Color Foundation makes me happy,” she says with resolve. “I have a responsibility to pay it forward.

When a woman I have helped asks me how she can repay me for my help, there’s only one thing to do—pay it forward. Help another woman. Lift others up as you climb the ladder. Do business with other women. Hold each other to the same standards that you would with a male colleague.”

Prior to founding GAP Communications Group and the Women of Color Foundation, Alex served as Senior Vice President at a Cleveland PR firm and spent five years as a public information officer for the federal government.

Q&A with Alexandria Johnson Boone

Q: What is your best advice for WBEs that want to leverage their certification and grow?

A: It’s my feeling that certification changed through my journey as an entrepreneur. It certainly helped me get my foot in the

door. It helped me win government contracts and gave me exposure to RFQs that I might have not otherwise seen. As business progressed, it put me in a box. I was getting my 15% as a sub. But then I thought, why can’t I be the main contractor?

I have a successful business with a solid reputation and can easily be the contract lead. Why should I be relegated to 15% when I could get so much more? So at that point I dropped the certification. Believe me. I am not advocating that women halt their certification. It is crucial to launching female entrepreneurs in their careers and opening doors to some amazing programming and career education. But for me, as a veteran in my career at that point, I was ready for the next level.

salesman said, “Honey, why don’t you bring your husband in with you.” I told him my name is Alex, not honey, and I don’t have a husband. I finally found another place that gave me the respect I deserved. When looking for loans, I had to dress down. If I looked too well off or drove a nice car, they were prone to not lend me money because I looked like I didn’t need it.

Maybe the biggest change is that women are more open to mentoring each other. It is critical to have women in your corner who believe in you and will be fiercely loyal.

Q: What changes have you seen in women-owned businesses over the years?

A: In the early days it was hard for a woman to make major purchases or secure a loan. I remember trying to buy a car. The

A: My dad was an entrepreneur. I realized through him that I wanted to be in control of my own economic status. I had some

great positions early in my career. Then one day I had to call 32 federal employees into my office and tell them they were losing their jobs. It was a turning point for me. I didn’t ever again want to be on the giving or receiving end of that kind of situation. Once I realized that I had acquired so much executive level experience working for the Feds, I was prepared for the future and never looked back.

Q: You started presenting the Women of Color training programs and activities in 2002, and later founded the Foundation, a 501 (c) 3 tax-exempt organization in 2005. What has been the impact?

A: I think the impact can best be described in the letters I often receive. One recent letter said, “You gave me a lifeline when I

needed one.” Another wrote, “You changed my life. You helped me learn how to start my own business.” I still get choked up over the story of the young woman who had recently been released from prison. One of our foundation sponsors wanted to send her to one of our events. We had her come for free to a seminar at a country club. I took a photo of her and it was published in the paper. She was so grateful for the acceptance she felt that she sent a $10 donation and turned her life around. $10 was a lot of money for her. And that is why I do this. When you help someone who thought they were lost. There’s nothing more fulfilling.

I see a lot of women helped because we encourage them to discuss issues freely in a confidential environment, especially the hard issues like rape, incest and single motherhood. So many of us have been subjected to issues that we haven’t revealed before. We can help each other grow by sharing. We teach women what their possibilities are.

Q: What advice do you have for minority entrepreneurs?

A: I have three sayings. First, “stay the course; reap the results.” Second is this famous anonymous quote, “Life is not measured

by the number of breaths we take but by the moments that take our breath away.” Third, “the most important day of your life is not the day you were born but the day you realize what you were born to do.” Embrace that you were born to be an entrepreneur.

It’s hard but stay the course. You may hear that most businesses fail in the first three years. Vow to not be that person.

Q: How do you feel about being a trailblazer?

A: When I was told I literally gasped for breath. It’s hard to be recognized for being me and doing what I love to do. It is meaningful because it comes from women of all walks of life. It validates what I do.

Q: How do you think your friends would describe you?

A: Fearless. A ride or die chick. I take friendship seriously. I have a good

sense of humor and am a good friend. I’ll be there when you need me and when you don’t need me. They also might describe me as a professor of Soledad O’Brien & Alex womanology. That’s the study of the brilliance of women.

Along the way Robin became known as a bold and ambitious risk taker with a relentless spirit for personal achievement. Q&A with Robin Fisher Roffer

Q: What made you leave the comfort of Turner Broadcasting to start your own company? Did you have any fears?

A: I left corporate America to strike out on my own, because I had made a bet with my dad when I was

18 that I would start my own agency before the age of 30. So, I told Turner that I wanted them as my first client, and gave them six months’ notice. And 23 years later they’re still my client. My husband at the time had all the fear that he would be the sole breadwinner; his lack of belief in me is one of the reasons why I’m not married to him today.

Q: What was Big Fish like in the early years?

A: It was easier because we didn’t have consolidation in the cable industry happening yet, so we were

like a rag-tag team of renegades, in a brave new world, defining this new frontier. And I created promotions like Shark Week, and Lifetime’s breast cancer awareness campaign, and launched the NFL on TNT, and so many television networks and websites. I could literally plant a flag in any direction and help my clients build multi-million dollar brands that are still important today, like FX, Animal Planet, A&E and History Channel.

Q: What were the first steps used to reinvent yourself?

A: I had to tell a new story. I had to introduce myself as the premiere brand strategist for the digital age.

It’s all about defining yourself. And continuing to evolve that definition, to change at the speed of the markets, but always staying true to your core, who you are and your expertise.

Q: You work with 25 different television networks and some large companies. Did you ever dream your company would have such a widespread impact?

A: Yes.

Because I’m extremely ambitious. I called the company Big Fish because I only wanted big clients. I never wanted to work for the public. I realized, even back then, that corporations had all the power, and if I could help executives reach their highest potential and be conscious of their responsibility then, in my small way, I could help the economy, and help people to be entertained, informed and inspired through television storytelling that really mattered. And at the same time, take everything I’d learned to elevate women to the most important roles in those companies.

Q: You speak often about women needing the courage to lead in the face of uncertainty. When did you first discover

your courageous self?

A: I think when I started working with Brandon Tartikoff. He was the former head of NBC and Paramount

Pictures, and he met me at CES (Consumer Electronics Show) and took me under his wing and convinced me to move to Los Angeles where I could take a bigger role in the entertainment community.

To have a mentor--to have a sponsor--to have somebody who believes in you, that is so successful, that’s when I really sort of, grew a lion-like heart, you know? And, within six weeks of meeting him, I packed up and moved to Los Angeles to start a brand new life. Having somebody who believes in you is like an anchor in rough seas.

You have to make gutsy moves or else you’re going to get crushed because the speed of business is moving so fast that if you aren’t bold in your response you’ll be marginalized.
