Our students and community have been through trying times in the past year. Despite worldwide turmoil with COVID-19 pandemic, our team and business partners felt it important to not overlook the past year of accomplishments from some of the top student-athletes.

On Thursday, June 18, the T&G recognized those athletes with its fourth annual Best of Hometeam All-Star Awards event. This year’s awards were transformed into a streaming broadcast, featuring professional athletes as the show’s official award presenters.

This commemorative section salutes our all-star athletes by naming players of the year in each sport and highlighting the special award winners who have exemplified teamwork,competition, perseverance and leadership, and says thank you to our sponsors who help make our annual Hometeam event a reality.

They don’t come much more special than O’Neill, who from September through February accomplished as much as a high school athlete could. While helping guide the Wolverines to the Division 7 state football final, he led Central Mass. in receptions (59), receiving yards (1,194) and touchdown catches (16), attracting and producing through double coverages all season en route to being named to the T&G Super Team. On defense, O’Neill even picked off a couple of passes for Leicester, which finished a 12-1 season with a loss to Abington in the Super Bowl at Gillette Stadium.

O’Neill hauled in a 74-yard scoring pass from Michael Mero as the Wolverines took a first-quarter lead. His senior offseason was practically nonexistent — just 11 days after the Super Bowl, he poured in a game-high 32 points in Leicester basketball’s season opener.

The two-year captain led SWCL in scoring for the second consecutive year at 22.3 points per game and earned a third straight selection to the league all-star team. The 6-foot O’Neill, who started in basketball all four seasons, finished with 1,144 career points. He’ll continue to play basketball next winter at WPI and major in engineering.

In both sports as a senior, McNulty was a powerful performer for successful Chieftain teams. In basketball, she averaged 15 points per game to lead Mid-Wach B as Nashoba went 17-5 and advanced to the Division 2 Central semifinals (the Chieftains were the lone true Central Mass. team among that final four).

McNulty, who was named to the Telegram & Gazette Super Team, was named league coMVP in basketball and the same in soccer. On the pitch, she also paced the league in scoring with 11 goals and added five assists en route to being named the T&G’s Hometeam Player of the Year. McNulty led Nashoba to a share of the Mid-Wach B title with Westboro, before the Chieftains fell to the Rangers in a heartbreaking Central Mass. Division 1 quarterfinal. She opened the season with a two-goal game against Holy Name and continued to score in the clutch throughout the season. Her hat trick in late October was all of Nashoba’s offense in a 3-0 victory over Shrewsbury. McNulty will play soccer at Division 1 Boston University in the fall and hook up against Patriot League rival Holy Cross over the next four years.

Courage Award TRISH KING, BAY PATH REGIONAL

Last spring, the Bay Path Regional Vocational softball team established a new award, the Trish King Heart Award, named in honor of its senior captain, who was unable to play her final high school season after being diagnosed with leukemia in December 2018.

The award recognizes dedication, diligence and determination, three traits King demonstrated on the softball field, but even more so in her fight against cancer. King inspired her family, including her parents, Debi and Raymond, friends, teammates, coaches and teachers, and brought the Central Mass. softball community together during her fearless fight. King, an Oxford resident, passed away in August at age 18.

Her impact on Bay Path athletics, in particular the softball team, lasts. Upon her passing, her teammates wrote a tribute to King on Twitter with the message: “As we all grieve the loss of Trish, we must also celebrate her and the foundations she helped build. Trish helped pave

a pathway for enduring success. Her legacy at Bay Path will not be forgotten.”

Trish King is the recipient of the 2020 DCU Digital Federal Credit Union Hometeam Courage Award. King, a three-sport star in softball, basketball and soccer, was diagnosed with

leukemia during basketball tryouts in 2018. She underwent a bone marrow transplant March 21, 2019, and spent much of the next few months hospitalized. Her spirit and strength remained with her softball teammates all season. They dedicated the 2019 season to her and brought

her No. 16 jersey with them to every game and practice. Bay Path won 12 games and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Central Mass. Division 3 tournament.

Last spring, softball teams from local schools such as Blackstone Valley Tech, Assabet Valley, Clinton and Auburn showed support for King and held fundraisers in her name. New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman, upon seeing a Telegram & Gazette story about King’s fight, wrote her a message of encouragement on Twitter. Last June, King received her high school diploma while hospitalized at UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester.

Bay Path soccer coach Tammy Legere presented it to her. King joined the commencement ceremony via FaceTime and her sister Liz walked the stage on King’s behalf and received a standing ovation.

“Trish loved life,” her obituary read, “and spent every day living it to the fullest.”

TEAM OF THE YEAR

MILLBURY GIRLS SOCCER September couldn’t have been more impressive for the Woolies, who went 9-0 for the month while outscoring opponents, 50-3. But the mark of a truly great tournament team is winning its final game, which Millbury indeed did with a 1-0 triumph over Eastern Mass. champion Millis for the Division 4 state title. This championship didn’t come easy for the Woolies and coach Hussein Issa, who has helped maximize the fortunes of several Central Mass. soccer programs. Millbury was 11-0-1 in early October before losing consecutive games to Grafton, Sutton and Nipmuc. After that, the Woolies only allowed two goals the rest of the way, finishing the regular season 13-3-2, 10-0-1 to capture the SWCL C crown. They advanced to the district final with wins over Notre Dame Academy and Uxbridge. A 3-0 title win over Douglas sent the Woolies to a state semifinal against Lenox, and they topped the Millionaires, 1-0. In the state final against Millis, sophomore Grace Martin scored in the second half, giving the Woolies their third state title in five years and enabling seniors Abbie Gilbert, Amanda Sarro and Audra McDuffie to accept the championship trophy. Martin and McDuffie combined for 33 goals on the season, and junior Keely Perry posted an 0.67 goals against average for Millbury, which captured Division 3 state titles in 2015 and 2016.

COACH OF THE YEAR JIM OXFORD, Wachusett Regional GIRLS Basketball By the coach’s admission, the Mountaineers had a relatively young team with two solid senior leaders returning from a Central Mass. Division 1 finalist, yet Oxford forged all the right moves to direct Wachusett to a 21-1 season and a berth in this season’s CMass semifinals. The dominating conquests during the season were impressive, as only twice did opponents draw to within 10 points

in the Mountaineers’ victories. Oxford’s defensive system was a key to so many of the wins, holding 11 teams to 30 points or fewer. All the Mountaineers were freshmen or sophomores, except for senior Hometeam Player of the Year Belle Lanpher, classmate Cat Davis and junior Avery Bierfeldt.

It took an overtime effort from Natick in the D1 semifinals to foil the Mountaineers. The season

followed a 22-1 campaign in 2018-19 when Wachusett lost by just a point to Franklin in the CMass title game. Ergo, Oxford’s teams haven’t lost a regular-season game since Feb. 2, 2018, a four-point setback to Groton-Dunstable. The Mountaineers will take a 46-game regular-season winning streak into 2020-21, quite the tribute to Jim Oxford’s program.

2020 Players of the year BOYS BASKETBALL JOHN WEST, SHREWSBURY

The 6-foot-8 West is one of the top athletes in Central Mass, averaging 23.8 points per game to help the Colonials finish 16-6 and earn Hometeam Player of the Year honors. West was named to his third straight appearance on the Mid-Wach A all-star team, picking up MVP honors, and second straight T&G Super Team nod. West also was named to the T&G Super Team in baseball last spring and will attend Boston College in the fall on a baseball scholarship. West scored 1,442 career points for Shrewsbury and is the Colonials’ all-time leading scorer. He also scored 48 points in a win over Xaverian to establish a school single-game scoring record. West was named to the Laska Yuletide Invitational All-Tournament team this year and took home the Laska’s Charles R. Bibaud Memorial Award. He also was named to the Westwood High Riley Winter Classic All-Star team for the past two seasons.

His two most memorable moments this season were defeating eventual Central Mass.

Division 1 champion St. John’s in Shrewsbury’s final home game on Senior Night and also edging Wachusett for the Colonials’ first league title since 2011.

GIRLS BASKETBALL BELLE LANPHER,

WACHUSETT REGIONAL Lanpher returns to the T&G Super Team after averaging 22.2 points per game to lead the Mid-Wach A and earn league MVP and Hometeam Player of the Year honors as the Mountaineers finished 21-1 before falling to Natick in the Central Mass. Division 1 final.

Lanpher, who also made the T&G Super Team as a junior, scored in double figures in every game this season for Wachusett, notching a season-high 30 in a win over Wachusett.

Lanpher was a key cog in the Mountaineers posting an undefeated regular season for the third consecutive year and making an appearance in the CMass Division 1 final for the sixth straight season. Lanpher will suit up next season for Central Connecticut State University.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY JOSEPH THUMANN,

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY EMMA SULLIVAN,

WHITINSVILLE CHRISTIAN

SHEPHERD HILL REGIONAL

Thumann put his best foot forward one race after another while reinforcing his status as not only the best cross-country runner in Central Mass., but one of the best in the state. And for that, he has been honored as the Hometeam Runner of the Year for the second consecutive year. Thumann was the Division 2 champion at the Bob McIntyre Twilight Invitational, the Frank Mooney Coaches Invitational and, for the second straight year, the Central Mass.

Division 2 Championships. As was the case last fall, his tour of the 3.1-mile course at Gardner Municipal Golf Course was the fastest — by a whopping 19 seconds — among the 361 competitors in both divisions. Thumann went on to place third at the state meet for the second straight year, his time checking in fifth overall.

It was a banner run from September to November as Sullivan put the finishing touches on a fabulous, four-year cross-country career. There were gold medals, team titles and, most of all, good times with teammates. And for that, this senior captain has been honored as the Hometeam Runner of the Year. Sullivan finished first at the Martha’s Vineyard Invitational, the Mid-Wach A League Championships and the Central Mass. Division 1 Championships while leading the Rams to the team title at all three meets. It marked her third straight top-six finish at the CMass meet. Sullivan took another tour of Gardner Municipal Golf Course a week later, placing 14th overall and first among CMass competitors as the Rams finished fifth at the state meet. Her accomplishments also included posting the fourth-fastest 5K time (18:36) in school history. Sullivan, a seven-time T&G Super Team selection in cross-country and track, will continue her running career and major in elementary education at Jacksonville University.

2020 Players of the year FIELD HOCKEY GILLIAN FAY,

GIRLS GYMNASTICS ELIZABETH DEBROCZY,

NASHOBA REGIONAL

Fay repeated as a Super Team selection after helping the Chieftains capture the Central Mass.

Division 1 championship. She was selected the Division 1 Player of the Year by the Central Mass. Field Hockey Coaches Association and is also the Hometeam Player of the Year. She scored 14 goals and added five assists and Nashoba won 20 games, which was her most memorable accomplishment of the season.

A team captain, Fay was named Mid-Wach B Most Valuable Player and earned league all-star honors for the third straight year. She is also a member of the lacrosse team and is a two-year MIAA student ambassador. Fay enjoys drawing in her spare time, as well as spending time with family and friends and playing with her dog. She will attend the University of New Hampshire, where she will play field hockey.

She plans to become a child life specialist.

Algonquin REGIONAL

Only a sophomore, Debroczy earns her second straight Athlete of the Year award for the Tomahawks, as she helped Algonquin take the South Sectional title and finish second at the state meet. Debroczy was first in the all-around in both events and was also second in the event at the Individual All-Around State Championships. Debroczy averaged 38.0375 this season for the Tomahawks in the allaround and took home Mid-Wach MVP honors.

Debroczy, who boasts a 4.0 GPA and is in all honors classes, was set to compete with her teammates in the New England Championships, but the event was canceled due to the coronavirus outbreak.

2020 Players of the year FOOTBALL OFFENSE EAMONN DENNIS,

Dennis emerged as one of the rare athletes capable of creating an eye-popping highlight whenever he touched the ball for the Pioneers, either by returning kicks, coming out of the backfield, playing in the slot or leaping to bring down an interception at defensive back. His electrifying athleticism has earned him the honor of Hometeam Offensive Player of the Year.

The 6-foot, 178-pound Dennis showed why multiple Division 1 college programs coveted his services in the offseason — with Michigan winning his commitment. This fall, he scored 19 touchdowns, while gaining 752 yards receiving and 448 yards rushing. He also returned four kicks for touchdowns this season, which is a school record and may be a Central Mass. mark, but such historical records are incomplete. Dennis has been a two-time honorable mention selection to the T&G all-star team and this season was named Division 3 Offensive MVP by the Central Mass. Football Coaches Association.

Nadeau capped off a stellar career for the Mountaineers, as the 6-foot, 215-pound lineman is the Hometeam Defensive Player of the Year after earning his second spot on the T&G Super Team and being named Mid-Wach A Defensive MVP for the second straight season. Nadeau also was named the Division 3 Defensive Player of the Year by the Central Mass. Football Coaches Association and was the Thanksgiving Game Defensive MVP for Wachusett. Nadeau is a three-year starter for coach Mike Dubzinski and finished with 112 tackles — 31 for losses — to go along with 5 sacks, 9 forced fumbles and 2 interceptions. Nadeau is also a standout shot putter in the winter for the Mountaineers and will captain the baseball team this spring. Nadeau enjoys fishing and carpentry in his spare time and hopes to become a U.S. marshal after he graduates college. Nadeau helped Wachusett’s offensive line average 23.2 points per game and its defense allow just 10.8 points per game — the lowest in Central Mass.

2020 Players of the year BOYS GOLF SEAN MAGARIAN,

WEST BOYLSTON For the second consecutive year, Magarian shot a 1-over 73 at Blissful Meadows GC in Uxbridge to earn medalist honors at the Central Mass. Division 3 Tournament. He also led West Boylston to the team title by 34 strokes. Living up to expectations as the favorite to repeating as district champion was his most memorable moment of the season. This is his second appearance as a T&G Super Teamer. Also for the second year in a row, he tied for seventh in the Division 3 state tournament. He carded a 4-over 76 at Cranberry Valley GC in Harwich.

Last year, he shot a 7-over 78 at Black Swan CC in Georgetown. The 5-foot-4, 130-pound senior captain was named the Mid-Wach E Most Valuable Player, again for the second year in a row, and led the Lions to a record of 13-2, 6-0 atop the Mid-Wach E. Magarian has been a league all-star in golf for four years for West Boylston and a league all-star in hockey for two years for Assabet Valley.

He has also played baseball for West Boylston since his freshman year. He plans to study criminology and play golf at Assumption College, where his brother Zach is a member of the golf team. Magarian would like to become a police officer.

GIRLS HOCKEY GRACE FELICIO, SHREWSBURY

A three-time T&G Super Teamer, Felicio was named Hometeam Player of the Year after scoring 24 goals and adding 17 points to finish third in Central Mass. and help the Colonials finish 14-6-2. Felicio, who play at Manhattanville College next year, surpassed the 100-point mark this season. Her most memorable moment this season was when Felicio accomplished that feat in a 3-1 win over archival Algonquin, where she scored twice to key the victory.

BOYS HOCKEY LIAM GILL, NORTHBRIDGE

Gill collected more than 150 points in three seasons for the Rams and is the Hometeam Player of the Year for the second straight season. Gill, who was named to the Division 3A and Russell Conference all-star teams, had 25 goals and 31 assists to lead Division 3A in scoring and help Northbridge finish 20-2. Gill, who attends Sutton High, also helped the Rams win the Grafton Holiday Tournament, which was his most memorable moment this season.

BOYS INDOOR TRACK JOSEPH RIVERS, LUNENBURG Rivers was dominant this season for the Blue Knights, taking the shot put title in the Central Mass., Division 5 state and All-State meets to earn Hometeam Indoor Track Athlete of the Year honors. Rivers holds the school record in the shot put (59 feet, 6½ inches) and also won the shot at the Coaches Invitational meet and took fourth at the New England Championship. Rivers, who will attend Bentley in the fall, was ranked 19th in the country in the event and was seeded 14th for nationals, which was canceled due to the coronavirus outbreak.

2020 Players of the year GIRLS INDOOR TRACK MADISON MARSH, SHEPHERD HILL REGIONAL Marsh makes her third appearance on the Super Team, winning the 55 dash (7.25 seconds) and fourth in the 300 (41.30), and anchoring the 1,600 relay team to a win (4:05.53) at the Division 3 state meet to earn Athlete of the Year honors. Marsh also finished third (7.33) in the 55 at All-States and second (7.23) at the New England Championships. Marsh will attend UMass-Lowell in the fall.

GIRLS SKIING CHLOE BRUSH,

GROTON-DUNSTABLE REGIONAL Brush continued to dominate on the slopes this winter, taking home Hometeam Skier of the Year honors after winning the slalom and finishing second in the giant slalom at the All-State championships. Brush, who attends Tyngsboro High and captains the soccer team for the Tigers, also earned Mid-Wach and Central Mass.

MVP honors. A member of the National Honor Society, Brush will attend UMass-Amherst in the fall and study sport management and continue racing for the Minutemen.

BOYS SKIING TRAVIS REARDON, LUNENBURG

Reardon, who attends Littleton and skis with Lunenburg in a co-op, had another remarkable season, earning his fourth consecutive spot on the T&G Super Team after finishing fifth in the giant slalom and second in the slalom at the state championships. Reardon also topped both events this season in the Omega Division.

Reardon will attend UMass-Amherst’s Commonwealth Honors College next fall and will major in biomedical engineering.

BOYS SOCCER KEVIN SKAGERLIND, WACHUSETT REGIONAL Despite being a marked man for most of his soccer career at Wachusett, Skagerlind produced with record numbers, and this season led the Mountaineers to a berth in the ultra-competitive Central Mass. Division 1 Tournament. The first Wachusett boys’ soccer player to eclipse 100 career points, Skagerlind is the Hometeam Player of the Year. The repeat T&G Super Teamer scored eye-popping numbers while Wachusett toiled in Mid-Wach A, which qualified four teams for the postseason and produced a champion in Leominster. Skagerlind notes that Wachusett clinching a playoff berth this season is most memorable for him. He netted six hat tricks for the season, and finished with 29 goals and eight assists this season to lead Central Mass. in points, 79 goals career. The 6-foot, 195-pound Skagerlind, a Mountaineers captain, was a driving force in helping coach Jason Gaumond surpass 150 career victories in midseason. As many around Central Mass. already know, the All-American is far from a one-sport standout.

Skagerlind earned T&G Super Team honors in hockey after sparking Wachusett to the Division 3 state title, and he’s headed to UMass on a baseball scholarship.

2020 Players of the year GIRLS SOCCER ABBY MCNULTY, NASHOBA REGIONAL

McNulty repeated as a Super Team selection after leading Mid-Wach B in scoring with 11 goals and five assists and was named the Hometeam Player of the Year. A team captain, McNulty helped the Chieftains to the semifinals of the Central Mass. Division 1 Tournament.

McNulty also was named to the All-New England all-star team by the Central Mass.

Soccer Coaches Association. She was named league MVP. McNulty was a four-time Mid-Wach B all-star, and as a freshman, helped Nashoba to the Central Mass. Division 1 title and a state final appearance. She is also a standout on the basketball team, and last winter led the league in scoring while earning Super Team honors. She comes from an athletic family, as her mother competed in track at Providence College, her father played basketball for the Friars, and her grandfather played basketball and baseball at Boston University. Next fall, she will attend Boston University, where she will play soccer.

GIRLS SWIMMING & DIVING ELLA CHURCH, BROMFIELD

Church, who was named MVP of the Mid-Wach League and also selected as Team MVP and to the Central Mass. All-Star Team, took home Hometeam Swimmer of the Year honors after placing second in both the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle at the Division 1 state meet.

Church, who owns five school records, also finished second in the 200 freestyle and third in the 100 breaststroke at the Central/West sectional.

BOYS SWIMMING & DIVING JUSTIN PAPAGELIS, WESTBORo

One of the most dominant swimmers in recent memory, Papagelis repeats as Swimmer of the Year after wrapping up a storied career for the Rangers. Papagelis owns nine school records and two Mid-Wach League records, and was also the Mid-Wach MVP this year and a fourtime league all-star. Papagelis, who also was Team MVP for the past four years at Westboro, won the 100 backstroke and took second at the 100 butterfly at the Division 2 state meet.

Papagelis also was second at the 100 breaststroke and the 100 butterfly at the Central/ West sectional. Papagelis was also named the Central Mass. All-Star MVP and won the Peter J. Foley Student-Athlete of the Year Award from the EMISCA. Papagelis will compete next year at Amherst College.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL Olivia Deckers, ADVANCED MATH & SCIENCE ACADEMY Deckers led Advanced Math and Science Academy of Marlboro to the Central Division 3 championship and repeated as a T&G All-Star.

The 5-foot-8 senior captain had 599 kills, 52 blocks, 672 digs and a school-record 240 aces as AMSA posted a 22-2 record. She made the Massachusetts Girls Volleyball Coaches Association Division 3 All-State Team and was named the MaxPreps American Volleyball Coaches Association Player of the Week in Massachusetts for the week of Nov. 4-10. She also repeated as a Colonial Athletic League All-Star.

AMSA defeated second-seeded Whitinsville Christian, 3-1, in the Central Mass. final, but her top sports thrill was edging Hopedale, 3-2, in the semifinals.

WRESTLING BREVIN CASSELLA,

NASHOBA REGIONAL Casella pinned his second straight T&G Hometeam Wrestler of the Year honor this winter, and it’s easy to see why. The 6-foot-1 Clinton native recorded an undefeated season during which he moved up to 160 pounds from 152 for the unbeaten Chieftains to again capture Mid-Wach, Central Mass. Division 2, Division 2 state and All-State titles, in addition to his first New England championship. Cassella, who finished his scholastic career with a 202-30 record, will wrestle at Division 1 Binghamton University in the fall. Cassella holds the school records for wins and is a two-time captain for the Chieftains. He is a four-time Hometeam and Mid-Wach all-star, and three-time league MVP.

The terrain offers 29 trails on 125 skiable acres with eight lifts (including 3 high-speed quads).

This means Wachusett can open early in the season (mid-November) and stay open late (until early April)!
