Spotlighting Service in Chicago The national convention really DID spotlight service! 133 members attended the national convention held in Chicago, Illinois. From July 11-15, members from all across the country gathered together.

We all had a terrific time sharing ideas, experiences, and plans with each other, while learning about new opportunities, best ways to accomplish goals, and recognizing outstanding members and chapters!

We also elected the 28th National Board of Directors, voted on bylaws changes, selected new project I.M.P.A.C.T. areas, met new friends, and enjoyed our visit to the Chicago area!

During convention, members worked on the five different service projects that were available. A room was designated for members to work on projects whenever they had a free moment.

These included: 1) a large segmented painting - being donated to the Minneapolis/St. Paul cancer center's patient's waiting room for prosthesies and wigs ; 2) make-your-own 'thank-you’ cards (almost 7 dozen) for our men and women in the service; 3) wallpaper gift bags - being used for women's abuse shelter to hold donated gifts in Minneapolis/StPaul; 4) coloring books taken to the Children’s Institute of Pittsburgh; and 5) beaded baskets.

Liz Scott was presented with the Woman of the Year Award. Liz is the Vice President of Development for Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation. The Lemonade Stand premise started in 2000 when four-year-old Alex built a lemonade stand out in her front yard to help "her doctors" find a cure for all children with cancer. All of the money from Alex's Lemonade Stand was donated to childhood cancer research. Today, with the organization growing in association with their sponsors, the organization has raised millions of dollars for childhood cancer research.

A Message from the National President, Dee Carter I am thrilled to be the 25th National President. I look forward to an exciting and productive biennium. The sorority has grown in numbers, diversity and talent over the last several years. I plan to continue this growth.

In order to grow in a productive manner, everyone must share the same vision and work together to achieve our common goals. My two goals for the biennium are to improve communication and identify and develop young, talented leaders.

The newly-elected Board of Directors met August 15-19 in Fort Lauderdale, FL, to conduct officer training and plan for the biennium. Our motto was “Back to Basics.” Training is vital for any organization to succeed and grow. Officers and members must know what their duties are and be held accountable. I am a firm believer that knowledge is power.

At the chapter level, I encourage each of you to get “Back to Basics.” You can accomplish this by having fun and interactive officer training; remembering the rich history of our sorority while creating new traditions; and finding new and innovative service projects. The National Board of Directors will work tirelessly to help you achieve these goals. Leadership Conferences will focus on officer training, the sorority’s history, and developing young leaders. Additionally, the Service Director will send out a list of ideas for service projects geared towards our Project I.M.P.A.C.T. areas. Finally, every National Board member will work to identify a young leader in the making and mentor them.

Over the next two years, I look forward to hearing from you about how you have used the motto “Back to Basics.”

Parliamentary Pointers

Welcome to a new biennium! My thanks to everyone that attended our national convention this past summer. It was wonderful to see old friends and make new ones. There’s no GSS experience quite as exciting as our national convention! And special thanks to those who served on the Bylaws Committee.

With the input of our districts and the comments shared during the Bylaws Forum, we were able to accomplish a lot of work on our bylaws in record time!

As you may know, any changes to the national bylaws must be put into your chapter bylaws this fall semester in order for your chapter to remain in good standing and eligible for travel assistance funds for conferences, spirit days and our next national convention. Updates to your chapter bylaws, standing rules and pledge policies are due to me by January 31, 2008.

Our website has a detailed bylaws update, listing changes that were made to the national bylaws that need to be incorporated into your chapter bylaws. Here is a short recap of the bylaws changes that were made this summer during convention. the National Board of Directors the authority to approve collegiate chapter (rather than the National Executive Committee).

•New Section 16 was added that waives the requirements for active chapter status for chapters that are adversely affected by natural disaster, catastrophic event or national emergency, so that chapters will remain in good standing in cases such as Hurricane Katrina.

Article I •Section 1 has wording changes that incorporate chapter, sorority and school rules.

•Section 2d the hours change to minimum of 10, maximum of 20 required.

•Section 3a hours change to minimum of 15, maximum of 35 required.

•Section 5 has wording changes that keep expelled members from rejoining any other chapter.

•Section 7 has wording changes that shorten the length of time needed before an auxiliary member becomes a full member.

Article X •New section 3 was added that waives the requirements for active chapter status for chapters that are adversely affected by natural disaster, catastrophic event or national emergency, so that chapters will remain in good standing in cases such as Hurricane Katrina.

Article V •Section 7 and Section 8 have wording changes that clarify some convention functions.

Congratulations to Spring 2007 Charters!

Last semester everyone was very busy with our largest pledge class ever. Due to the large number interested, each active and inactive had at least 2 little sisters. For our Big Sis/Lil Sis Day we reserved the local movie theater and had our own private screening of Happy Feet. 53 of our 80 + pledges were activated. We are so proud of all the hard work these girls put forth to be a part of this wonderful organization. This brought our number of members from 29 to an astonishing 82. To date we have completed 60 service projects through various organizations. This semester we are spending time getting to know everyone so we won’t have rush until fall of 2007. Look out for more news on how our chapter in doing in the near future!

The sisters of Gamma Kappa chapter at the University of Tennessee partcipated in Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. They drove to Raleigh, NC to help build a home for a deserving family. Watch for an article about this extreme service project in the Winter issue!

Chavelle Jenkins accepted the charter for Eta Epsilon at James Madison University at the 2007 Convention in Chicago from D’ann Brosnahan, the 2005-2007 National President.

Alumni News Hello Gamma Sigma Sigma Alumni. It is my honor to be your Alumni Director for the next biennium. I am excited to tackle the challenges ahead. Our Alumni program has room for growth and I am anxious to try some new approaches in that area. Additionally, I am planning at least one Alumni Conference which will give us a great venue for networking, some appropriate trainings, service projects and sisterhood.

Look for an opportunity to step up and be more involved in our sorority. There are so many experienced and talented ladies out there that I want to meet and talk to. Please let me hear from you anytime.

Tell me what kinds of things you are doing to get the word out about GSS, what unique projects you are involved in and most especially, what I can do for you.

One of my goals is to increase the Alumni membership by 30% by using the Alumnae Committee. We will be more diligent about getting new college graduates connected with an Alumni colony/chapter sooner. We also will try some new methods of locating "lost" sisters that we know are out there. Your help is always appreciated in that area. One way is to talk about your GSS events at work or social gatherings. You never know who may pipe in with,"I used to be in that sorority."

I look forward to an outstanding Alumni program with exciting service projects, inter-chapter events and fun! Keep me informed of what's happening and, again, contact me anytime with any questions or concerns.

In Sisterhood, Judi Mecsics, Alumni Director The Bluegrass Alumni Reactivating Chapter has been busy with thinking of new ways to help our communities. The members plan to host three informational programs this fall at the Boys and Girls Club aimed at elementary, middle school, and high school age groups. The programs focus on staying out of trouble, body image, and other issues that face youth today. Bluegrass also looks forward to hosting a candlelight walk and rededication ceremony on October 12th to celebrate Gamma Sigma Sigma’s 55th anniversary. The reactivating chapter’s biggest event this fall will take place the following day on October 13th, 2007. The ladies of the Bluegrass will be having an Alumni Tea at the ALIVE Center in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Invitations will be sent with more detailed information.

In between the “big” projects the Alumni have slated for the upcoming months, the members will also be dedicating their time to other service projects and fundraisers. Soror JaNeé Lamb has worked hard on Lupus Awareness efforts for the Lupus Foundation. The Lupus program took place at Vaughn Reno Starks First Baptist Church in Elizabethtown, KY on August 18, 2007. At the national convention, Bluegrass raised $83.00.

Western Kentucky University has organized a Mental Health Fair on September 18, 2007. The Bluegrass Alumni will be making ribbons, stress balls, and other tools that will increase mental health awareness.

Members plan to continue volunteering by feeding the homeless at the Salvation. Bluegrass will also begin hosting activities for women at the local women’s shelter B.R.A.S.S. Some fundraising ventures include a BBQ/fish fry around Labor Day, a yard sale, and dance for the youth.

The White Rose Alumni of TN are now taking advance orders for their cookbook. The cookbook has over 150 recipes. You don’t need a stand to keep your page open with this cookbook; it has a built in stand. Alumni Spotlight Samantha Dassler Barlow, middle school science teacher at The Oakwood School in Greenville, is one of sixteen teachers selected from a national pool of applicants to receive an Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellowship. The Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellowship Program offers public or private elementary and secondary mathematics, technology, and science teachers with demonstrated excellence in teaching an opportunity to serve in the national public policy arena. Samantha was a member from ‘96-’99 in the Delta Chi chapter at East Carolina University.

Service News Our two new Project I.M.P.A.C.T. areas for the new biennium are Ending World Hunger and Targeting Chronic Diseases. The acronym (I.M.P.A.C.T.) stands for "Individuals Making Progress Across Communities Together."

Included in this column is information on the first area, Ending World Hunger. Information on both areas can be found in the next mass mailing and also on our website at www.gammasigmasigma.org. Additional information on both areas will be included in upcoming issues.

World Hunger Facts: • In the Asian, African and Latin American countries, well over 500 million people are living in what the World Bank has called "absolute poverty."

• Every year 15 million children die of hunger.

• For the price of one missile, a school full of hungry children could eat lunch every day for 5 years.

• The World Health Organization estimates that one-third of the world is well fed, one-third is under-fed one-third is starving. Over 4 million will die this year.

• One in twelve people worldwide is malnourished, including 160 million children under the age of 5. (Via United Nations Food and Agriculture) • The Urban Institute in Washington DC estimates that one out of 6 elderly people in the U.S. has an inadequate diet.

Service News Celebrating the 55th Anniversary of Founder’s Day on October 12th!

By: Deb Folsom, Service Director On Founder’s Day, Friday, October 12th, I encourage all chapters to take part in a sorority wide service project. Working towards our Project I.M.P.A.C.T. area, Ending World Hunger, let us together work at helping to stock our food shelves in the United States. Chapters and individual members can work towards collecting non-perusable goods by going door to door on our campuses and community, signing up to work at a soup kitchen or food shelve or raising money to donate to your local food shelf or global organization. No donation is too small so think about what you or your chapter can do to help fight hunger.

(Optional day to hold a food drive is World Food Day on October 16th) Send a short email or letter, including a picture of your project (if available), about what you or your chapter did to celebrate our 55th Anniversary and how many pounds of food or amount of money was donated.

Membership News Probation vs. Expulsion By: Karen Kerr, Membership Director One of the hardest challenges that GSS Executive Boards face is placing a member on probation or putting them up for expulsion. A careful review of your chapter’s bylaws and standing rules is important so that you are aware of your rights as a member. According to our National Bylaws, chapters have the power to place on probation or expel a member for: non-completion of prescribed service hours, lack of attendance at chapter meetings, or non-payment of dues in accordance with the chapter’s bylaws. This means that your chapter must outline in your bylaws what your chapter will do if you fail to meet one of those requirements: will you be placed on probation or will you be expelled? The chapter’s standing rules must address the appeal process if a member is placed on probation or is expelled.

It must also address, what probation means to a member and what a member must do to be removed from probation.

Expulsion means that your membership in Gamma Sigma Sigma has been taken away. If you are found guilty of violating our National Hazing Policy, you will automatically be expelled from your chapter, and you are prohibited from rejoining any GSS group at any level; you are no longer a member of the national organization. Your lifetime membership in GSS is given to you when you are activated as a member of GSS via the Activation Ceremony after your MIT period is completed. This means that if you are expelled from your chapter for anything other than hazing, your chapter’s members must vote to remove you from the chapter.

Chapters need to be aware of a national requirement discussed below and begin to follow the process immediately. According to our national bylaws, chapters are required to give notice of probation and conditions of probation of any member(s) to the Membership Director within thirty (30) days. Upon reinstatement of a member on probation, notice shall be provided to the Membership Director within thirty (30) days (of reinstatement). Also, chapters are required to give notice and explanation of expulsion and the date of expulsion of the member(s) to the Membership Director and Database Coordinator within thirty (30) days (of expulsion). The names of those expelled members must also be included in the Graduating/Separating Members’ Report at the end of each semester.

Treasurer News My name is Karen Erickson, and I was elected National Treasurer at Convention this summer. In my position I am responsible for the maintenance of our sorority’s financial records including preparing the biennial budget, collecting membership fees, disbursing travel pool for Conferences and Spirit Days, reimbursing expenses of National Board members and preparing an annual financial report for distribution to all members and chapters.

Membership fees for all chapters are due to me by November 1 of each year. A cover letter with directions for completing the Membership Roster and submitting fees will be sent in a mass mailing in the fall, and is also available on the national website.

I am always available for questions or concerns about chapter budgets and finances. For example, did you know that each chapter should have its own checking account or should be using campus accounts?

Chapter funds should never be deposited in any member’s personal checking account.

I also would like to focus on fundraising ideas for chapters. Serving as a District Director, chapters frequently requested new ideas for fundraising. So I would encourage all chapters to submit new or unique ideas on fundraising to me. I will report back on these through a newsletter in the mass mailings or a column in Perspectives.
