Convention 2005 - Cleveland Rocked! Over 125 members joined together in July at our 27th National Convention in Cleveland, Ohio. New National Officers were elected, bylaw changes were made and service was done. We raised close to $900 for the Hospice of the Western Reserve and donated over 100 journals and children’s books to them as well. Thank you to all who contributed. Congratulations on another outstanding National Convention. Awards were given throughout Convention Pictured are members and alumni of Beta Sigma Chapter accepting their 1st place Barbara V. Hurricane Katrina Relief Believe it or not, there are people out there who are trying to take advantage of the disaster in the South. While this should not discourage you from giving, you do need to be careful who you give your money to. Here is a list of tips for you to consider when deciding where you are sending your money and/or spending volunteer time on. * Pay with a check/credit card. Keep records for tax purposes. * Beware of any unsolicited appeals, online or on the phone. * Be cautious about giving to highly publicized victims; those outside the media spotlight are often more needy. * Double your donation by taking advantage of employers' matching grant programs. * Consider volunteering locally to take the place of someone who has gone to the flood relief area. * Beware of mail appeals that appear as bills or invoices. * Watch out for copycats; shady operators often disguise their appeals to look like established groups. * Be wary of groups whose appeals focus heavily on sob stories but tell little about their organizations. * Call your local Better Business Bureau or police if you felt pressured by solicitors. * Ask if a charity is licensed by state or local authorities. Most states and many localities require it.
