A YEAR IN THE MAKING

V After a whole year of no footy we are finally back in the MPNFL! Round 1 in Division 2 kicks off this week with Pearcedale hosting Devon Meadows from Tractor Park (Pearcedale Reserve). This will be the first game of local footy to return in Victoria since the COVID-interrupted 2020 season. In the senior football, both sides will be hoping their young talent can help improve on 2021's results. Pearcedale were just able to win one game and Devon Meadows finished 9th with five wins. Both sides will be eager to get into this one as it has been a long time coming for both football and netball.

DAN LONERGAN'S AFL WRAP

LOCAL PLAYERS SHINE AT THE START OF NEW AFL SEASON! Football clubs on the Mornington Peninsula were well represented by players who started their careers there in the opening round of the AFL season and they acquitted themselves well. In such an exciting opener to the season including major upsets by Sydney over Brisbane and Adelaide beating Geelong, many of the local players had significant impacts. Will Hamill, who showed so much promise for the Crows last season off half back, but unfortunately was concussed ending his year early was terrific for Adelaide with his outstanding pressure and composure in defence. I liked the way Ned Cahill originally from Mt Eliza played as a small defender for Essendon in their nail biting one point loss to Hawthorn. Cahill certainly tried to give the Dons drive from the backline especially in the last quarter as they attempted to hang on and start the season with a win. When he made his debut last year he played as a small forward, but seems to have adjusted well to a new position at the other end of the ground so quickly. It was great to see North Melbourne’s number 4 draft pick from 2017, Luke Davies-Uniacke dominate in the first quarter for the Kangaroos against Port Adelaide. He had 12 possessions and showed the talent that had recruiters excited about this star junior from Rye. He ended up with 20 disposals as Port won easily, but it seemed to be the first sign that he might become the classy and explosive midfielder predicted when he was first drafted. Davies-Uniacke’s teammate, Lachie Young, a Somerville product, who crossed over from the Western Bulldogs this season was solid in defence in his first game for his new club similar to the way he played during his two year tenure at the Dogs. His brother, Hayden, another top ten draft selection had 19 touches for an injury riddled Fremantle, who went down to Melbourne and once again looked accomplished with his raking left foot.

The GWS Giants and St Kilda match featured several players whose footy journeys commenced on the Peninsula and exciting St Kilda onballer, Hunter Clarke continued on where he left off last year playing beautifully in the Saints gritty win. Jack Lonie from Seaford kicked a sensational goal from an impossible angle tucked on the boundary to ignite St Kilda when they fell behind in the last Quarter. A more experienced local, who is arguably one of the AFL’s best intercept marking defenders, Nick Haynes for GWS was again prominent with seven Marks in another excellent display. Carlton’s 2020 Best and Fairest, Jacob Weitering, was recruited from the fertile breeding junior ground of Mt Martha was again steady for the Blues on Thursday night. He spent time on Sorrento export, dual Richmond Premiership player, Tom Lynch, who was restricted to one goal. Other players from MPNFL clubs, who featured in the opening round include James Harmes from Devon Meadows, who amassed 20 disposals and provided his usual run, while Bailey Dale, who played in Edithvale/Aspendale’s last premiership as a 16 year old in 2013, when the Eagles came from 5th and 5 goals down early in the last quarter to claim the flag had a different role for the Bulldogs. Another Edithvale-Aspendale junior, Dylan Shiel had a big first half for the Bombers accumulating 10 possessions as the Bombers out played Hawthorn with an 8 goal second term, but in the Hawks’ stirring second half comeback Shiel was restricted to just seven more touches. One of the veterans is Langwarrin’s favourite son, Luke Parker. He may have been outshone by a plethora of Sydney youngsters in their great triumph over Brisbane, but as usual he played his part gaining 23 touches and leading from the front. It is certainly great news for Footy on the Mornington Peninsula that so many draftees began the season pretty well and although it is only one game, it augurs well for the rest of the season as GameFace plans to keep a close eye on them throughout the season.

Along with some new recruits, Devon will also be lucky to have none other than Brett Deledio for some games in the black, red and white. The club is excited for what is to come which will include 'Lids' in his MPNFL debut for Devon on a special Sunday clash for ANZAC Day against Mornington.

LATEST NEWS BILLY'S OFF TO TASSIE Langwarrin star Billy Rolfe has confirmed with GameFace that he will be playing in the Tasmanian State League for the 2021 season with Lauderdale Football Club . After a successful season personally over summer up North in the NTFL, Rolfe is ready to take on a new challenge on the apple isle. "Coming up here (Darwin) has been great with a bit of freedom while I still can," Rolfe says. Billy will finish up his season tomorrow with the Southern Districts Crocs as the clubs leading goalkicker, before heading down to Melbourne for the arrival of his sisters baby, then it's on the boat to Tasmania. The move was initiated by former AFL player Allen Christiansen. He was impressed after playing against him for the Tiwi Bombers, and reached out to Rolfe about a move to Lauderdale where he is assistant coach. "I've been happy with my form and after an injury at the start of the year, I'm really glad I got my body right," Rolfe says. A popular man at Langy, Billy will be missed by all at Lloyd Park as he challenges himself again at state league level. "It's sad to lose him as we were expecting a big season from him and as we all know he's a bloody legend," Langwarrin coach Josh Beard told GameFace.

DIPPER MAKES SWITCH TO D1 RIVAL Red Hill FNC has confirmed with GameFace that formerSorrento star Jake Di Pasquale will be heading up the Mountain to play for the Hillmen in season 2021. Di Pasquale has been listed at Casey Demons in the VFL for several seasons and was also a TAC Cup player for the Dandenong Stingrays. He will add a level of strength and ball-use to an already deep Red Hill squad who are certainly ready to take it right up to Division 1 this season.

CAPTAIN COURAGEOUS:

JACKSON CASEY

Bonbeach has announced that their captain a spiritual leader Jackson Casey will be going around again in season 2021 for a record-breaking 7th year in a row as captain. Casey has been a hard as nails midfielder, for the Sharks since he walked into the club as a junior. Bonbeach through and through, Casey played over 100 games as a junior for Bonbeach (Chelsea YCW). Since then, he has played in multiple senior grand finals and proven himself as one of the greatest leaders in the entire MPNFL.. Casey at training in 2020 before COVID

At 19, Casey was part of Bonbeach's grand final disrupted the Sharks flag aspirations side that went down in thrilling circumstances. But the Sharks unfortunately did not come away with the chocolates that day. But young Casey was a star that day and almost willed them over the line as a taleted teenager. Over 200 senior games later, Casey sits as one of the most highly respected players at his club, and around the MPNFL.

"CRAZY TOUGH TEAM FIRST LEADS THROUGH ACTIONS"

Teammate - Brad Sykes

Yet again voted in to lead the Bonbeach Sharks who have put a list together in 2021 that is built to take them to the promise land. We will have to wait and see to see if the Sharks can claim that premiership they have been waiting for so long for.
