As family business owners one of our biggest dreams is to build something for our children’s children and we work hard to develop a blueprint of the ins and outs of the business in hopes our children will eventually take over and continue building on the family legacy. In some cases I find out that’s the exact opposite. Most kids don’t want anything to do with their family business and could care less seeking careers in a different field to build their own. Maybe a good or bad thing but to me somewhere we are missing the mark or falling to communicate the expectations and value of generational wealth.

PUBLISHER’S NOTE:

Family over Everything

A

s a 3rd generation business owner in my family one thing I realized was the value of the family business.. My Uncle RD and cousin Chris Danford opened up a dry cleaning service and a seafood restaurant in Waycross, GA back when I was a young boy and at the time I didn’t realize the impact these businesses placed on my family and future generations. Many times my dad would take us to Waycross, GA to visit my great grandmother and see relatives however to me, it did not click what my uncles and ancestors were building to create generational wealth.. I must say my family dropped the ball and didn’t carry these businesses into the next generation leaving my generation of the family seeking ways to make a living off someone outside of my family dreams.. Now don’t get me wrong I’m not blaming anyone for lack thereof, I’m simply stating the businesses that were built are no longer in existence.. what happened I really don’t know.

We see it all the time, Indians, Mexicans, Arabs all family businesses working together and going thru the process to keep wealth circulating in their village but the African American village seems to struggle! My question is how do we build? What are the setbacks? And what is it that makes us not about the same templates to success. Do we not take advantage of the grants, access to capital, or funding available or do we not have the proper knowledge or tools to achieve the goal? Whatever is the stronghold that keeps us back how do we eliminate it or are these just stereotypes placed on our culture that continue to divide us. My goal in this edition was simple, show family owned businesses working together to achieve greatness. In a world of politics and false ideologies one of the most important factors of life is building a resourceful engine that will generate wealth for generations after generations and I love seeing families accomplish this. Helping small businesses is not only a passion of mine but Game Changers Media Network as well and we would like to share our journey of families that are working together for a common cause thru economic development. My prayer is that this content heals broken wounds, enlightens to greatness, and build bonds that can’t be broken. I’m thankful the Most High has blessed me and my team with the strength and wisdom to bring consciousness to this matter and shake the barriers some may face in understanding the value of “The Family Business”. As I say all the time “The energy we create is the energy we partake!” #EducateTheMind #ElevateTheSpirit #EliminateTheStereotype #EEEsUp We are the #PulseOfTheCommunity

RULE YOUR DAY:

Developing A Morning Routine BY DOMINIQUE HUFF

“I don’t need a morning routine. I already know what to do when I get up!” Ok, tell us about it. “Well, I brush my teeth, pick out my outfit, shower, eat breakfast, check social media, watch the news, shoot off a few emails, figure out if I’m packing a lunch or buying lunch.” Well, those are things you have to do for others, even though you included grooming. But what are you doing for your self-care and making sure you can rule the day.

We’re so caught up in multi-tasking, juggling many things, making sure our obligations are done for others, but we’re not taking care of ourselves. Dr. Glory Inyang, a personal trainer based in Atlanta, recently discussed this concept. “You need time for you,” she said. “The routine is for you, not for business nor family tasks.” She stated that the morning routine needs to help get you inspired and works on your selfcare. It includes grooming beyond shaving, combing your hair but something you skip over like flossing or some quick exercises. Or it can be starting your day with water first before getting your coffee.

Nope, still not it.

“Everyone will have a different morning routine. What may work for one person will not work for another individual,” she explained. “I’m up and at it due to my line of work at 3 am because I have clients who want to train before work. So I need to make sure my mind is in my zone before I service clients.”

Don’t worry. Many of us didn’t have a clue about having a good morning routine. Yours truly included.

A significant piece of advice is evening preparation.

“Well, I do check my emails, social media, look at my stock apps, make sure I eat breakfast, got my lunch, leave before I get stuck in traffic and such?”

GAME CHANGERS MAGAZINE  | 9

GAME CHANGERS MAGAZINE  | 10

“By taking 30 minutes in the evening to get yourself together, you can save three hours in the morning,” she said.

An evening routine can be as follows: Meal Prep For The Next Day.

“You need time for you. The routine is for you, not for business nor family tasks.”

Go ahead and place in the fridge the meat you will need from the freezer, or do that glance to see if you will need to go to the store for those needed items. This is also a good time to make your lunch plans for tomorrow, along with breakfast. If you have leftovers for lunch, pack the Tupperware with the meal at night, so all you need to do is bag it with your plastic silverware and napkins.

Prepare Your Wardrobe. What are you going to wear to the office tomorrow? Are you suiting and booting? Is it a casual day where you want to break out the jeans or shorts? What type of shoes are you wearing tomorrow? Sneakers, sandals, hard bottoms? If it’s a sandal day, look at your toes to see if you need to trim your nails. Again, you already know what you want to do—iron your garments.

Handle That Housework Now! Wash those dishes, sweep the floor, vacuum, or whatever. All too often, we’re washing last night’s dishes in the morning, attempting to do some quick housework when we need to focus on getting the day started.

Bathe or Shower At Night. Now for some of you who exercise in the morning, this may not be optional, but for those of you who just say, I’ll do it in the morning, we’re talking to you. Why not do this at night? Especially during the colder months. Also, get that shaving done while you’re at it!

Charge Up Your Devices! Cellphones, laptops, tablets, or whatever you use daily. Ensure these items are plugged up before you go to bed so they are fully charged in the morning. Nothing is worse than realizing you forgot to charge your laptop or phone.

Send Off That Morning Email Now! Use your prep time to send off any emails you want to go out before heading to the office. It’s easy to get stuck on the computer. We’ve all done it. We’re talking team member emails, emails to clients, or any business-related email that needs to be sent off immediately, not things that can wait until you arrive.

Pack Your Laptop, Bookbag, Gymbag Tonight! You hit the gym daily, so have that bag packed with your needed items. The same thing for your bookbag or laptop bag. You waste too much time trying to make sure you don’t forget anything in the morning.

Make To-Do List. This list will help you stay focused tomorrow at the office and be focused. This is not all exhaustive but can help make sure you’re ready to rule your day in the morning.

Now, let’s talk suggestions for the mornings for your self-care: Take Your Supplements! Get back on track and schedule. Take them in the morning before your breakfast.

Sit In Silence for 15 Minutes! Do not hit snooze on your alarm. Get up and sit in silence. Think about your day ahead, brainstorm on how things will get done. Preplan. Meditate, pray (if you’re religious or spiritual). Do not check any email nor social media at this time.

Drink a bottle (or glass) of water at least 16 ounces. You slept all night. You need to hydrate. Do this before you make your coffee.

Do Lite Basic Exercises. It can be 20 jumping jacks with 20 push-ups. Stretch and do some light movement to get your blood circulating for 20 minutes. You may want to go on a morning jog or run. If you have a treadmill or exercise bike at home, use it for 20 minutes.

Eat A Good Protein Heavy Breakfast. It can be a smoothie, shake, organic cereal, eggs and gluten-free bread, whatever, have a healthy protein-rich breakfast.

Recite Affirmations! Find some affirmations related to your personal goals and recite them for 5 minutes. You can also sleep to meditations via YouTube for goals you are trying to achieve.

Arrive At Your Office Early. Give yourself at least 30 minutes of quiet time for reflection before starting any work. This should be a time with no phone calls, no emails, nothing but you and your thoughts. From that point, begin to attack the day. For those in blue-collar professions, you can sit in your car, do this, and then go clock in. Your morning routine should be a way to ease you into the day without feeling drained by the time you start at the office. Find out things that can work for you and commit to them for 30 days. After 30 full days, this should come as second nature to you, where you are now prioritizing yourself before you can serve others. Remember, you are your best investment! Don’t neglect yourself for others. Let’s stop that bad habit! GAME CHANGERS MAGAZINE  | 11

Co-Parenting 101 WRITTEN BY ANDREAL MALLARD EDITED BY EL-MAHDI HOLLY

I

n a modern society, marriage may not be as high on the priority list for couples who become parents. In these scenarios, kids may either live with both parents for set periods of time, or the children may live solely with one parent. Raising a child can be tough when two adults decide to go their separate ways; however, the child(ren) must be raised and supported. Oftentimes, parents tend to have differing values which may or may not be agreeable in the child’s interest(s). It is to the advantage of any child birthed to a couple that are in harmony with one another, especially if the parents are happy and in agreement. However, major decisions can sometimes produce tough moments between seemingly happy parents. While these tough challenges might force parents to completely go their separate ways, I would like to share 5 tips on co-parenting to help fathers and mothers form a solid foundation that will work to protect their child’s interests.

1

Work Together! This is very

important because working together helps establish common goals. When the children see both parents working together, it provides them with a great example and they may develop the skill of working with their peers in their

daily lives. When kids suffer from witnessing discord and dysfunction, they may tend to act out more and show lack of self-confidence that will especially help them to make critical decisions. They may also take on their parents’ bad habits,

causing them to be loners and develop low self-esteem. Short tempers and aggressive behavior can begin to develop, which may be detrimental to the need for children to form habits of respect towards themselves and to others. GAME CHANGERS MAGAZINE  | 13

GAME CHANGERS MAGAZINE  | 14

2

Establish a Parenting Plan (and stick to it!)

Most parents can reach consensus when the plan is clearly defined. However, in some cases parents who simply cannot agree, and/or when one parent may be too controlling, they may exercise the option of going through the court system or a thirdparty arbiter to resolve issues. It’s relatively simple if you consider that if it took 2 individuals to make the child, logically it will take 2 (and a supportive village) to raise the child, giving a fair amount of opportunities for mothers and fathers to be a part of the child’s life.

3

Minimize Your Need or Control.

Remember, your child is a product of you both! Unless there is a prior history of domestic violence or any other illicit behavior, your child needs both of you— at your best! Although in Georgia law, mothers are automatically given custody for children

born out of wedlock, the father still has a right to establish legitimation, request visitation and can support his child. Always use common sense, and try to intentionally make the right decisions without your ego being involved. Acting in this manner may prevent the courts from issuing mandatory legal orders to tell you how to parent your child. And let’s not forget — this can be a time-consuming, expensive process. Save money! Playing a game of ‘keep away’ from the other parent only breeds more discord and anguish in your child’s life.

4

Be Transparent. Know and communicate

your strengths and your weaknesses! Both parents can provide their child with the value of their love and guidance, and believe it or not, your child needs these from both of you. One parent may be a better teacher, or a better playmate, or better at a certain skill, or vice versa. Give your child the best version of yourself.

“The health and

well-being of the child is the biggest measure of success in co-parenting.”

Communicate. Communication is key

to any relationship! It helps establish common goals, sets definable boundaries, and is a healthy way to keep the peace between both parties. As a parent, you may not have to talk everyday or at every minute, but you know what they say, “practice makes perfect.” Effective communication can help you both understand each other’s perspective on issues that will likely benefit your child’s overall development. The health and well-being of the child is the biggest measure of success in co-parenting. Yes, it can certainly be difficult, and it doesn’t always mean you will agree on everything, but showing courtesy and respect towards each others’ thoughts and values can truly help build stronger relationships. Tit-for-tat interactions only cause more conflict; resolving issues must be handled by seriously and calmly focusing on one issue at a time. No good parent wants to see his or her child suffer, nor would he or she want their child to become another statistic of unfortunate circumstances. Plenty of juvenile delinquents and children who show early tendencies to bully and/or abuse others are often witnesses to bad interactions on the part of either parent. Every tall tree must be rooted on a strong foundation. Parents—before we call it quits, let’s fulfill our roles and give our individual best in firmly planting our young seeds into the greatness we know they can achieve!

ALLEGIANT LOGISTICS: 2 Families, 1 Business, Building & Working Together

our church, Tabernacle of Praise (Pastor Timothy J. McBride), which has been the foundation for our partnership and business relationship. Allegiant Logistics was the culmination of each of our individual skill sets and talents. The name Allegiant means loyal or faithful, and that is exactly what we are to God first, our families, each other and our businesses. We decided to partner together because we all had the same vision of building a legacy, contributing to our community, and utilizing entrepreneurship as a vehicle to change the lives of those around us.

How did you get started in the trucking business? Our team has spent the last 40 years combined working directly in the logistics industry. Our Executive Leadership team brings a unique professional background covering the Manufacturing, Transportation, Warehousing, and Finance sectors. We utilized our logistics experiences, mentors, and research to launch Allegiant Logistics in 2020. The Transportation industry had experienced a major shift due to the global pandemic and we all saw an opportunity to provide specific logistics services to Manufacturers and Aerospace/Avionics maintenance facilities.

Two families come together, start a business, something uncommonly seen in Minority communities... How did that come about and what made you move in that direction? Our story is not the norm for minority business owners and we are proud of that. Our team met at

What role do the husband’s, men, play in the company and what role do the wives, women play to help make it successful day in and day out? We all have a different role but equally important in the success of our business day in and out. Allegiant Logistics is a proud woman owned business, our Vice President, Teece Bryant and CEO, Shay Lynn Dixon, lead and manage business growth. Our CFO, Larry Bryant and Director of Operations, Demetrius Dixon are hands on with safety and fleet operations. We each bring a valuable piece of the puzzle in keeping things trucking.

What are some of the obstacles you’ve faced as a logistics company versus just being independent truck owners? As an asset based logistics company we’ve experienced obstacles as a Freight Brokerage and as Fleet Owners. One of the biggest challenges starting off is overcoming the barriers in place to keep small businesses from doing big business: such as access to capital, opportunities, and necessary equipment. We overcame many of those obstacles by connecting to Local Chambers, leveraging relationships, and building banking relationships locally.

OUR STORY What are 3 tips you would give those seeking to be in the trucking business or owning logistics companies like yourself that may want to get started in the field?

Analyze your investment level, do your research, and find a good mentor. There are so many ways that you can enter into the Logistics industry and some are a lot riskier than others. Analyze how much you can invest: time and money. Are you looking to work full time or part time, understanding the time commitment will help you determine what type of business you start. Research entry level business options such as being a dispatcher, freight broker agent, or CDL driver. There are many other ways to enter but those are the most common. We highly suggest finding a good mentor that offers classes or additional training: there are excellent inexpensive courses on Udemy as well but having someone to answer the complex questions will help you build a stronger business foundation.

What are 3 safety tips truck drivers should adhere to when operating moving freight and/or cargo? Allegiant Logistics has a strict safety program that includes a day of on site training. We understand that risk anytime an 80,000k vehicle is put on the road. 3 things all drivers should adhere to are always complete pre-trip inspections, comply with hours of service regulations, and be aware of inclement weather conditions.

The logistics industry is one of the top industries for hiring those who have faced trouble with the law. What is it like when most feel like that’s a big risk when you help someone get a second chance at life to support their family? Transportation is the industry that always will accept someone who has had a difficult background. While certain security clearances can be required most people who are looking for a fresh start can find it in Logistics. There are several

national programs that are specifically for those who are looking to start a new path through truck driving.

You guys have a strong team, and a great staff that are highly trained on safety... How important is it to give your staff the tools they need to succeed and why? Thank you! We have focused on leading with integrity and by example. Most companies focus on hiring, we focus on retaining. We focus on finding great staff and cultivating their skill sets by providing the atmosphere for our staff to learn, grow, and build with us. Training, resources, and continued support are the only way to set our staff up for success. We understand the importance of having a team that is prepared for the level of growth we plan on experiencing.

How can we find out more about your company online so our audience can follow you or contact you? We would love to connect with you all on all social media platforms @allegiantlogistics! JUNETEENTH Celebrating Unity Of Purpose In An Era Of Darkness BY SARAH M. BILLUPS, MSW, LCSW, ACSW

J

UNETEENTH is the nationally recognized African American Independence Day. It is the celebration of the last recognized day of slavery in America. June 19, 1865 is heralded as the beginning of our real freedom. General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas to find that blacks people were still being held in captivity, even though they had been free for two years. He told them that they were free, and had the backup of a full battalion of soldiers to enforce his words.

When the black people realized that they were free, they dropped everything right where it was, and ran out into the streets. There were great celebrations, great jubilation, as they tasted freedom for the first time. Many of them took off, trying to find family members who had been sold away. JUNETEENTH is symbolic of that day, and celebrates the end of a legacy of slavery imposed upon our ancestors. It is incumbent upon us to recognize and celebrate this day. We are linked by the American Black Diaspora, a by-product of slavery in America. This makes us unknown relatives, and the blood of our stolen and sold ancestors has deemed it so. JUNETEENTH represents the official end of the brutal practice of slavery. I wish I could say “…and they lived happily ever after…”, but unfortunately I cannot. It was after this time that we had the birth of the KKK;, an evolving police force; black codes; death, murder, and destruction of multiple black communities by angry, jealous, white mobs; bombs dropped on Tulsa’s Black Wall Street, and an unknown number of black men, women, and children murdered; the horrendous “Devil”s Punchbowl” event in Mississippi; inhumane test

experiments on unknowing black men to spread disease throughout the communities; The Civil Rights Struggle, Black Lives Matter, borne out of the death of 16 year old Trayvon Martin; massacre of the ‘Emanuel 9’, nine church members by a white nationalist, who ACTUALLY sat in the service with them first; the unbelievable murder of George Floyd in broad daylight, in front of witnesses, on video, by a uniformed, on-duty police officer. And here we are...It is not a fairy tale, but it is some of our story. The good and the bad. JUNETEENTH is a time for us to recognize and celebrate all of the cultural links which define us. In spite of all of the bad times which we have experienced in this Country, we have managed to hold on to some of our cultural links, throughout the years. We have celebrated by cooking the same foods from State to State, wherever you find us. Collard greens, candied yams, mac and cheese, sweet potato pie, fried or barbecued chicken wings, etc. You know the list. Just as the Italians are defined by marvelous pastas, and desserts, and the Irish are known for their corned beef, we are known for specific foods also. The way we dress, sing, dance, and socialize are also cultural. One of the most important links for us as a people is Unity Of Purpose. When we celebrate JUNETEENTH, we give homage to our ancestors, and the things which they passed down to us through the centuries of enslavement. We celebrate the shared history, the wonderful stories passed down from generations which make us laugh. Let us celebrate the wisdom and brilliance of stories such as the “Brer Rabbit…Brer Fox’’ stories. The slaves could tell those stories around the slave owners, and they never knew they were the topic!!! Many of those are lost now, because they were passed down by word of mouth, but the memories linger on. The laughter of friends and family

gathering together, enjoying each other’s company without the suppressive eye of the whites. When our need was the greatest, so was our unity. We understood that we needed each other. As we celebrate our culture, let us keep a watchful eye. We are living in an upside down world right now, where lies are an accepted truth by a large segment of our population, and they are making negative, backwards steps because of the BIG LIE,… AND, because of our voter turnout in the last election. We as a people must take this threat seriously. Make note of the people involved so that you can make an informed vote at election time. This movement which we are witnessing in disbelief, is not about being Democrat or Republican. THIS IS ABOUT OUR DEMOCRACY… This is one of the darkest, most dangerous times in our Nation’s history. The threat that it presents for us as a people, is so real, it is almost tangible. Racial hatred against multiple groups of color have surged to the forefront in America. It is a waste of time attempting to appeal to the conscience of the people who are busy changing laws, and suppressing the vote. Apparently, they have no conscience, and have made an oath to autocracy, power and greed. Deception is their tool, and we must be aware of it. We have demonstrated than we can work together, and vote as a block when it was necessary. Let us not lose that unity of purpose, as we face what is coming in 2022. It is going to be a dogfight, and we must be ready. Your VOTE is your VOICE. If we want to honor our ancestors, and have a voice in changing history, then we MUST VOTE IN EVERY ELECTION, LOCAL, STATE, AND NATIONAL. JUNETEENTH encourages community growth, especially with our youth. Our youth are our future, and understanding their history is mandatory. It defines who they are, and hopefully will inspire them to keep the vision of our ancestors strong. Getting a good education, going to college or learning a trade

JUNE TEENTH is a time for us to recognize and celebr ate all of the cultur al links which define us. In spite of all of the bad times which we have experienced in this Country, we have managed to hold on to some of our cultural links, throughout the years. GAME CHANGERS MAGAZINE  | 19

are all part of a winning formula. People will always help you if they see that you are trying. The horrendous number of deaths in our communities around the Country from gun violence, is a sad testimony to black intracommunity cannibalistic behavior. However, I am happy to report that the majority of our youth are marvelous young people in our communities with outstanding scholastic achievements, wonderful civic engagements, no interaction with the Criminal Justice System, and have terrific inter-family interactions. The media covers the “bad boys”, at the expense of our real newsworthy youth, who shine in community positivity. BUT WE KNOW WHO THEY ARE!!! The point is that we have many reasons to celebrate who we are!!! Our people… our past… our present…and our continued vision for the future. JUNETEENTH is a time for pride in our accomplishments; an acknowledgement of all of the inventions created by US, which makes life better around the world; celebrate all of the

artists, dancers, musicians, and athletes which define us through the ages, and which people continue to emulate today; celebrate all of the scientists, engineers, architects, doctors, astronauts, educators, among many others, who we represent as we celebrate JUNETEENTH!!! JUNETEENTH allows us to crow, just as the Irish do on St. Patrick’s Day. So, come on, and let’s do this!!! Fly your Bendera (red, black, and green flag), have a cookout and invite your friends, attend a JUNETEENTH celebration somewhere near you, set off fireworks… dance, laugh, eat, enjoy good friends. Let’s celebrate widely, and with inspiration. On June 19th, let’s show that indomitable spirit. The glass is half full!!!! LET’S CELEBRATE FREEDOM!!! AND, let’s be prepared to fight for it. The struggle is not over, but neither is our perseverance.

HAPPY JUNETEENTH!!!

I look to reach out to a diverse group of black men whose opinions range on any number of topics and ideologies to figure out a way collectively on how to address and solve some of the biggest problems confronting our community!!

With the murder of Nipsy Hustle and the chaos that ensued at his vigil. I reflect on just what this ideology means to me and other black men! Contrary to popular belief (and some complaints) Black Men Have No Allies (BMHNA) is not a

Will it get ugly sometimes? I can guarantee that but I also believe that through respect and a common goal we can ACHIEVE that which we set our minds to do! Thanks for following now let us get to work!!

This nomadic lifestyle didn’t afford T.K.O. any level of comfort or contentment in his surroundings; a factor of his youth responsible for his lifelong, adrenaline addiction (his drug of choice) and risktaking drive. What it did allow him was to establish residency in music making. He spent his every waking minute rapping and beating on anything in his path to tap into his passion for drumming which (much like Pharrell) led T.K.O. to become a percussionist in a variety of school music programs. Drumline along with legends such as AI Green and The Supremes (the icons of his parents liking), and transitional living fostered T.K.O.’s strong sense of respect for others and the desire to serve and protect those close to him. “Being part of all those bands-Concert, Marching, Jazz, Rock-taught me that being part of something is more than just showing up. You have to respect each other and work as a team. It really opened up a loyal, protective side of me.”

Meet The Artist, The Self Defense Trainer, and The Business Owner

Triple K. O.

With the grit of David Banner, the crunk of Lil’ Jon and the swagger of LL Cool J, T.K.O. - Tripple Knockout-is a pound-for-pound champ ready to jump into the ring. Born Tracy Rucker in Bartow, Florida and a child of a hardened military family, T.K.O. spent his youth in tow traveling the world while furtively tuning an ear to music. By the age of 19, he had lived in more than fifteen states, from the southeast to New York, and spent his most memorable time outside the states in Germany where his father was stationed on two separate assignments. “Living in Germany was one of the greatest experiences of my life. I got an appreciation for the culture; the people were kind and welcomed somebody like me – someone who was completely different.”

While music fueled his mind and stoked his creativity, T.K.O. stiff ached for a more physical outlet to annihilate his feelings of being a man of a different breed. In a guy’s outing and an unexpected occasion, T.K.O. ventured out alongside his cousin to a local sparring match. A fired-Up T.K.O. climbed into the ring and found himself a home. Time, practice, and the brawn of rock classics (by the likes Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and The Grateful Dead) playing in the shadows shaped T.K.O. to be one of the “beasty-est” in his field. Rather than use his animalistic, badass persona to elevate his own stature, T.K.O. selflessly applied his energy and skiffs to become a mentor to today’s youth by joining forces with Atlanta’s Gateway Center-an organization aimed toward ending homelessness -as an Outdoor Therapy Wildlife Counselor. Teaching the enrollees priceless lessons in self-defense, self-respect, and personal conduct T.K.O. encouraged the many children participants to become responsible, well-rounded young adults during his two-year tenure. “Having gone through a lot myself, giving back to the kids is a way for me to step out of my comfort zone and step back into their circle—a place I’m familiar with. I’m reminded of where I’ve been and where I’m goin’ and I hope one day, they will do the same—lead.” GAME CHANGERS MAGAZINE  | 21

GAME CHANGERS MAGAZINE  | 22

T.K.O.’s resume and work experience as a boxer and mentor is weighted with time spent as a bodyguard and bouncer. As the “muscle”, his brutelike build proved to be his greatest weapon and shield as the 6’3”, 220lb wall-like man came faceto-face with life and death ducking punches and dodging bullets. While some may have bowed out, T.K.O. mustered his energies to turn the experience to good, walk tall and stand with a fist. In 2000, seizing every ounce of his being and street-smarts, T.K.O. made the decision to shift gears and set his sights toward a music career. Combining the physicality of boxing and the intuitiveness gained as a bodyguard with his love of rhythm and rhymes, and his desire to be a positive influence, T.K.O. speaks his voice with his music. Although the transition may not seem the most obvious, he believes the career change was a natural progression. “The similarities between what I’ve done and what I’m doing are sick. Boxing and rapping are both a fight: your beginning has to be tight or else you’ll unravel before you ever get to the end. Both are aggressive, action-packed, and interactive. So, you got to be light on your feet when you do what you do. Be ready to move, and in either case, when it comes down to it, words are a greater weapon (than fists)--in a fight and in song.”

Currently living in Atlanta, Georgia, T.K.O. is ready to go another round... and he’s not at all concerned about being new to the game. “Stereotypes don’t define you. You got to step outside those lines and be the person you know you can be. Just because you’re from a bad neighborhood doesn’t mean you have to sell drugs or be a thug. You have to push to shed that image. I’ve waited ‘til the right time to come out the box, and I’m here. Being a rapper doesn’t make me a bad guy and I aim to change the image. I’m really just a big teddy bear, but a bear that you do not want to mess with.” Just as the music of hip-hop greats Tupac and Biggie did for him, T.K.O. aspires to make his music come to life for his fans by writing genuine lyrics that mirror everyday life, everyday thoughts, and capture just about everyone’s feelings. “I want people to see something of themselves in my music. If they can own a piece of what I’m saying, that connection will be there.” A champion in athletics, the arts, and human behavior, T.K.O. dedicates his physical and artistic field of energy to the creation of a better world. In spite of his imposing frame and intimidating presence, his formidable strength makes it undeniably clear... there is beauty in the beast.

I WANT PEOPLE TO SEE SOMETHING OF THEMSELVES IN MY MUSIC. IF THEY CAN OWN A PIECE OF WHAT I’M SAYING, THAT CONNECTION WILL BE THERE.

I hope we can continue to develop great content that will educate our community, open the eyes of the lost and improve lives. Holmes said that both news shows will bring about conversations regarding the future of Black America and the power of voting, along with discussions about policy that specifically impact black communities, either in a positive or negative way based on perception and the current climate.

THE BLACK VOTE With Bruce Holmes

Henry County District V Commissioner Bruce Holmes has been tapped to executive produce two news programs called ‘The Black Vote’ and ‘99% Politics,’ with the first show airing next month. The Black Vote is a show hosted by Bruce B. Holmes that focuses on the voting trends of African Americans and how candidates use their platforms to influence the outcome of elections. The Black Vote will interview current and upcoming political figures, law makers, community activists and of course the voters. This show will bring a unique perspective to the opinions of every segment of the black community.

“The first show will air in the month of May. This opportunity is such a blessing and allows me to transition into a whole different area in my professional career. I’ve been blessed to be a professional athlete for seven years working in the biotech industry as director of national accounts for 20 years covering the whole country, serving my community on the BOC for three terms and learning my most recent craft as a commercial general contractor,” said Holmes. “This opportunity allows me to stretch myself even further by utilizing creativity that I know is within me. Although these two shows will be taped here in Atlanta, they will be national in scope and run on national TV outlets. I hope we can continue to develop great content that will educate our community, open the eyes of the lost and improve lives.” He also said that the programs will use local talent for production, in order to grow local businesses that focus on the TV and film industry as their trade. Holmes said he will use his decade-long experience as a county commissioner to bring a unique perspective to viewers.

Her heart to see the often forgotten of society, has always caused her to make bold moves in the community. OUR LOCATION IS SIGNIFICANT Any community center aimed at lifting the citizens within its walls is significant. However, at Changing Your Ordinary Recovery Center, we believe our location is extra special. Nestled in the Pleasant Hills Community, with a population of nearly 2,000, this neighborhood was initially built by African Americans in the late 19th century as a place to grow, thrive, and work for middle class blacks. Though the community has changed over time, witnessing increased violence, criminal activity, and the like; we still believe it is a treasure- a diamond in the rough. Expenses in Pleasant Hill are lower than the national average. While most people rent their homes (68%) and those holding a bachelor’s degree or higher is low (2%), we believe the potential in this neighborhood is limitless. The median age being 31, means we have so much work that can be done to impact and shift the next generation! While we look ahead to bring lasting impact and hope to the future of this community, we thank those from the past who saw a need for progressive change. Those people include but are not limited to: Teachers (Cleopatra Love, Lewis H. Mounts) Musicians (Little Richard, Alvin Lucas “Fats” Gonder) Artists (John Oliver Killens, Henry W. Lucas) Clergy (St. Peter Claver Catholic Church) Doctors Countless Families & Community leaders (Sarah Randolph Bailey, Mattie Hubbard Jones)

GRIFFSTAR ENTERTAINMENT GROUP:

Building on Solid Foundation

A family-owned record label birthed in Atlanta; Ga started was formed in 2018. The primary goal of the label was to support and enable our artist to be creative, business minded and treated financially. GAME CHANGERS MAGAZINE  | 29

GAME CHANGERS MAGAZINE  | 30

We had heard so many horrific stories about artists who were taken advantage of in the music industry, and we didn’t want our artist to have to experience that part of the industry. We wanted them to focus on being creative, making music and being the best. We truly believe in empowering our artists to be great performers, as well as savvy business owners. We support and prepare our artists to take charge of their careers and learn every aspect of the music industry. The Executive team consists of Lisa Griffin, CEO, Derek Griffin, CFO and Darien Griffin, COO. Griffstar Entertainment has two artists, Kennedy Griffin (“June”) and Blake Griffin (“BlakeBashe”). The family label has continued to thrive and set its footprint in the music industry. As Griffstar Entertainment continues to make its mark, our goal is to prepare, empower and challenge our artists to not only be performers, but business owners. Griffstar Entertainment is truly a family owned and operated business. With any family there are challenges, which consist of everyday life and day to day issues that come along with parenting, managing artists and business. There is definitely a thin line between the business aspect and being “Mom and Dad.” We all have our roles to play in order to be successful. We respect the roles that we all play, whether it’s the parent, the artist role or the Executive role. We try to keep the business side separate from the Mom and Dad side. Griffstar has two artists. This brother/sister duo creates an added measure of positive sibling rivalry with the artist supporting each other’s talent and their passion and love for music. We have a quote we love, “Success comes to those too busy looking for it.” Griffstar was birthed in 2018 under the request of BlakeBashe to follow his love and passion for music.

“We truly believe in empowering our artists to be great performers, as well as savvy business owners.”

June The Rockstar

T

he birth of Griffstar was inspired by “Blakebashe.” He started his love for music when he was in Middle School. Blakebashe, unbeknown to his family, had been performing, making music, videos, writing and making beats in the family basement. He even put together a makeshift studio, using a broom stick tape together with a mic and a small laptop. This was the start of his music career and it has been going ever since. Blakebashe has remained passionate and committed to his music. He decided that he didn’t want to do the traditional after graduating high school. He wanted to pursue his music. Blakebashe has continued to be committed to his dream. As parents, we were aware of the dark side that the music industry offers. We wanted to protect our artists being taken advantage of. Therefore, we started our own record label and signed our artists. We wanted to invest in our artists and lay the foundation to attract the right deal! “June” following in her brothers’ footsteps has followed her love and passion for music since Elementary School. She performed at school musicals, talent shows and church events. It wasn’t until 2019 that June started taking her music to the next level. June writes her own music! She has performed at various showcases, where she has placed 1st for her hit song

As an independent label there are challenges and many obstacles that we have been faced with in the beginning. It is important that a label surrounds yourself with the right people with like intentions. You will have many sheep in wolves clothing. Be aware of the individuals who are taking advantage of the opportunity and have no pure intent on the success of the artists. They see a $$$.

If I could offer 3 tips: 1. Vet everyone who wants to join the team 2. Do not enter into any long term contracts/ agreements 3. Get yourself a good attorney Moving forward into 2022, Griffstar will continue to push and promote their artists. Be on the lookout for our upcoming tour for both June and Blakebashe. They will be also launching the brother/sister Duo. We will be launching our first 11 city tour, “Put the Guns Down…Life Matter” Oct 2…kicking off in Brunswick, Ga. Q&A

want; it’s harder to define when you don’t (or where to find it). All I knew was that I wanted to do something with my life that would give me a sense of purpose. I wanted to do something that would add value to my life—a career that would bring out the best of me every day. The only occupation I knew that could offer that combination of fulfillment was law enforcement.

AN INTERVIEW WITH POLICE CHIEF LLOYD L. SLATER

Q—How do you feel about the negative light that has been placed on law enforcement around the country?

BY DEXTER NEWBY

Q—Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? A—Well, as you know, my name is Lloyd Slater, and I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. When I graduated from high school, I enlisted in the Army. I was fortunate to have earned an assignment in the 1/75 Infantry (Ranger) Battalion, which led me to my first duty station, Hinesville and Fort Stewart, Georgia. At the end of my second enlistment, when my then-wife and I began thinking of where we wanted to settle and raise our daughters, we both agreed that it would have to be somewhere other than New York City; somewhere that offered a warm climate, clean streets, and friendly people—a place where life moved at a little slower pace. So, when we left my last duty station in Germany, we returned to Hinesville, where in 1986, I joined the Hinesville Police Department. During my tenure, I have served as the Emergency Services Dive Unit Commander, Watch Commander, Uniform Patrol Division Commander, and the Assistant Chief of Police. I have earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Management and a master’s degree in Public Safety Administration from Columbus State University. I am also a graduate of the Georgia Law Enforcement Command College.

Q—How did you get into law enforcement? A—Since returning to Georgia, I have worked at several different jobs ranging from a lab technician at a chemical plant to being a civilian contractor on Fort Stewart. Although these were considered good jobs, they were routine. Each day was the same as the day before. Many people desire a nice, peaceful, drama-free life; however, having been in the military, I was used to being more challenged—I wanted more exciting and meaningful work. Self-fulfillment is hard to define when you know what you

What kept me in law enforcement were the thousands of lives that my actions have had positive impacts on. And, of course, no two days are ever the same. Being a police officer provides me with the opportunity to make the most out of my life—by making a difference in someone else’s.

A—Police officers are often more critical of a fellow officer’s poor behavior than a citizen would be. This is not a perfect world, and police officers are not perfect people; they are subject to making mistakes like everyone else. The difference is that those police officers are often required to make life-altering decisions under high-stress conditions in a fraction of a second. Unfortunately, some of these decisions have fatal consequences. There are a few bad officers, and those officers should be held accountable for their actions—but not the whole profession.

Q—What do you feel are the major issues that we face here in Hinesville, and what can we as citizens do to help? A—First, Hinesville is a great community and a safe place to live, and I plan on keeping it that way. This sentiment seems to be evident by the hundreds of military families who have separated or retired from the Army and who have chosen to make Hinesville their home. And like any city our size, we’re going to have our share of issues and growing pains. However, the Hinesville Police Department has an outstanding and diverse group of officers. These men and women are some of the best in the business, and they take pride in the work they do and the bearing they have on the community. There are several small things that citizens can do to have a significant impact, such as sharing a story on social media about a positive law enforcement experience or having “the talk” with your children about the police. The best advice that I can give anyone is the same advice that I gave to my children—if you are ever told to do something by the police—as long as it is not illegal, immoral, unethical, or unsafe—comply now, and if necessary, complain later. A deliberate refusal to comply with an officer’s lawful verbal command automatically escalates the situation; it prompts the officer to use other means of persuasion. Unfortunately, many young men and women who can become the change they want to see in their police departments are unwilling to become part of that change.

The demographic that can enact direct and immediate change are the ones who would rather talk about changing, reforming, and defunding the police rather than becoming police officers themselves. Like most law enforcement agencies around the country, we are actively recruiting eligible community members into our ranks. Still, sadly, many of our youths are drawn to a different and often opposing lifestyle.

Q—How does it feel to be a part of history as the first African American police chief for Hinesville? A—I’m glad you asked that question. Not because no one has ever asked me that question before, but because I honestly didn’t know how to answer that question until a few days ago. Being Hinesville’s first African American chief of police just never resonated with me, no more than being Hinesville’s first African American assistant chief of police. I didn’t feel any different now than I did then. How could I feel any different? I have been an African American all my life and a police officer for the past thirty-four years. Nothing seemed to have changed other than my office and the rank on my shoulders. Instead, I was waiting for someone to ask me how it feels to have been the most qualified candidate for chief of police from other applicants around the country. I would have said that I feel elated to know that all of my sacrifices, hard work, and perseverance paid off. To me, achieving my goal of becoming chief of police was undoubtedly one of my most notable accomplishments and the highlight of my career; being Hinesville’s first African American chief of police was simply a pleasant coincidence. It wasn’t until three months after being in my new position that I came to my office one Saturday to rearrange the previous police chiefs’ pictures on the conference room wall to make room for mine. After I had hung all the photos on the wall and stood back to see if they were straight, that’s when it hit me. Viewing my picture among my ten predecessors, I finally got it—everything we do, say, hear, feel, or otherwise perceive is influenced by how we see ourselves through our own subjective self-image. As a result of this bias, we see ourselves differently than others. I had to step outside of myself to see myself as others do.

Understanding my position as chief of police from that perspective offered a sense of clarity that I could not have perceived any other way. I must have looked at that wall for ten minutes before taking a deep breath and walking away with a greater sense of understanding and responsibility than when I first walked into that room. I was finally able to see and feel the historical implication of my appointment and what it meant to so many people. There have been many highs and lows along my incredible journey, but I finally made it to the top of my profession with help from many supportive people along the way. I’m excited to enter into this next chapter of my career, and I’m looking forward to what lies ahead. Over the police department’s eighty-year history, Hinesville has changed and grown in size, population, and cultural diversity. I am a reflection of that growing change. I am honored to have been chosen to lead the Hinesville Police Department into the future and extremely proud to be the first African American chief of police to do so.

Q—What plans do you have for the City of Hinesville? A—As the chief of police, one of my key responsibilities is to improve community relations by solving problems that don’t exist yet; therefore, my primary goal is strengthening them by implementing initiatives that will produce longterm benefits in community support. As police jurisdictions around the country struggle with issues ranging from racial tensions to lack of funding, I intend to create as healthy an environment as possible for my officers to do their jobs ethically and professionally. I believe we can make real progress if both sectors of society work together toward achieving the common goals of empathy, understanding, and mutual respect. I’m looking forward to using my professional experience and leadership abilities as chief of police to foster a collaborative and innovative work environment that is foremost in law enforcement principles and practices—one that will help lead the Hinesville Police Department into a new era of community relations perspectives. Scott partnered with Alice with Tina Wright to transform a stage play name “Deception” for the “screen”. Writing this production of “The Last Rose took time for perfection over a 5 year period. Scott knew the time had come to share this important message about a serious subject that is still necessary for discussion today. The subject of Aids and HIV has plagued the black community for years and has

seem to have slipped into the background of life. BUILDING THE

FAMILY BUSINESS Georgia Flavor with a Chicago Style

Pictured left: Bryan Harvey and Ken Hall

W

hat do you get when you mix Chicago cuisine and Georgia cuisine with a long line of entrepreneurs? You get a food truck experience like no other.

The Stony-Terrace food truck serves Georgia food with a Chicago style! The owners believe they share what they do as a family with the community. With signature sauces and dusts for their chicken wings and Philly marinated Collard green recipes Stoney-Terrace look to stand out in the food truck/ restaurant industry by serving good food and good times. Ken and Bryan Hall are the owners and operators of this innovative culinary business. Working hard is a family tradition and they wanted to bring personal life experiences to their cooking. “Let me take a moment to tell you how we differ from other mobile kitchens. We are not a chain. Fresh, hot, inspired foods, with our personal touch is our specialty. We pride ourselves on a menu that reflects our roots.” says, Bryan.

Where did we start? Prior to venturing into business, Bryan Harvey & Briana Hall would throw events for friends and family in the comfort of their own homes. Rave reviews accompanied accounts of each moment from attendees fueling the motivation for the two to serve the public. Briana (a Chicago, IL native) and Bryan (from Americus, GA) then made a decision that would do just that with the tools needed to be successful. In September of 2018, they incorporated themselves and began to build what would become Stony Terrace. With approximately 20 years of prior experience within the food industry in commercial locations, the transition was seamless. So what’s in a name, Stoney-Terrace?. The name derives from their midwest and southern roots. Stoney (Chicago) and Terrace (Americus, GA)

Says Ken: “Basically the name Stoney-Terrace derives from where we come from. Stoney Island, main street, south side of Chicago. Pecan Terrace, Americus GA. It all tells the story of where we are all from. Where our roots are from.” “We get together as a family, we cook good food and listen to good music.” Says Bryan who is excited to bring this experience to Henry county. Coming from a long line of entrepreneurs both Ken and Bryan look to make an impact in south Georgia as well as create a legacy that their children can benefit from. Bryan says that after becoming disenchanted with working a 9-5, he was searching for a way to become more financially secure. Ken, equally desiring an opportunity to create a better life for himself and his family, realized that owning a business was the only way to live the American dream and thus the business was born. Beyond setting a path for future generations Ken is also excited about the opportunity to nourish and delight the Henry County area. The duo prides themselves on great customer service by making sure the food is piping hot, fresh,

& delicious. They remain shamelessly involved in as many experiences they can manage. Whether through catering &/or mobility to events, we are specialists in feeding the audience we serve! They teach their children to work hard. Ken and Bryan both believe that good results come from vision, dedication, planning and hard work, which creates good results. Their children are listening as they are interested in having their own businesses one day. Looking at the success of Stony-Terrace and the experience they’ve gained working the food truck sets them up for success in the future. Says Ken “Our fathers were entrepreneurs and their fathers before them. You’re building a family legacy in the same breath you’re living your dream with all the tools that God has equipped you with. To see it through is really breathtaking!” With both food and attitudes this focused and positive it’s only a matter of time before Stony-Terrace takes ALL of Georgia by storm.

The Gayles Family Business Q: Who are the Gayles and how did you guys start a family business? With over 20 years in the gift industry and sales and marketing combined, it seems only natural that two Georgia natives -- Daren and Karen Gayle -- would team up to offer Georgia gifts and souvenirs that show their Georgia pride and help others extend some down-home Southern hospitality. Karen started the business back in 2008 as a part-time home based business creating Georgia gifts and baskets via an online store. Because Atlanta is a top convention and meeting destination and gets a lot of travelers, Karen saw the need for Georgia theme gifts and decided to cater to event planners, tourists and locals who wanted a touch of Georgia. Daren came on board when the couple got married in 2011 and they have been working together in the business ever since. Daren handles sales and shipping, while Karen provides the creative direction for the gifts and administrative functions.

Q: What type of business do you own and what kind of products do you sell? At Georgia Gifts & More is a locally owned and operated gift store that offers: • • • • • • • •

Georgia gift baskets Georgia gourmet foods Georgia souvenirs Georgia sports items Georgia books Promotional products Georgia wedding favors Family reunion shirts and souvenirs

Q: Georgia gifts and more is located in Tucker, GA a metro city north of Atlanta, GA... why that location and what impact did the location play in growing your business to reach your target market? After the business outgrew our home in 2014, we went full time in the business and looked for a location that was convenient to many of our customers, vendors, suppliers and business resources, which led us to the I-85 corridor near Spaghetti Junction. The office park location was

convenient to downtown Atlanta, Gwinnett and DeKalb and gave customers a place to come in to shop instead of just shopping online. After being in that location for four years, we wanted to expand the retail shopping segment of our business and be in an actual shopping area for greater visibility while still remaining convenient to our customers and vendors. We settled in Tucker, GA on Lavista Road which was only about 10 minutes from our old location. People sometimes ask why we aren’t downtown, but we strategically didn’t want to be there. Shopping in downtown Atlanta comes with congestion, paid parking and can be inconvenient for customers. We have so many clients that appreciate the convenience of simply driving up to our store for a hassle-free shopping experience.

Q: As business owners what are some of the hurdles you had to cross to get you where you are today? As a small business, we all wear a lot of hats and have to work together as a team. Communication is key as well as setting up processes that keep everything running smoothly. Learning how to work together as a husband and wife team and still maintaining a good work-life balance is an important lesson we’ve learned.

the process of it all to remain still open and successful? Like most other businesses, 2020 was a wild ride to say the least. But we were determined—with God’s help—to come out stronger than when we went into the pandemic. We had to close the retail store for a few months and the beginning of the pandemic. With no business coming in, we took the time to analyze the business and set a strategic plan for the months ahead. For 6 months, we didn’t purchase any inventory and believed God to sell what we had. Miraculously, orders came in for exactly the counts that we had in stock or we were able to make substitutions to fill orders. We trimmed the fat in our inventory and created new gift offerings for items that were slow moving to help them sell. Shifting our focus from events and tourists (because there were none) to everyday, general occasion gifts like birthday and thank you allowed us to repurpose our gifts in brand new ways and capture more of the retail market. It was the same product, just themed differently. Unfortunately, we had to let all of our staff go, and Daren and I worked the business for the next few months only going into the store to ship online orders. E-Commerce made a big difference during the pandemic and having the ability for customers to shop online got us through. We also made a plan to pay down debt and build a reserve so that we would be better able to weather the storm. We applied for as many government subsidies as we could, and the additional funds helped keep us afloat. The business has a sense of a franchise style business, with a blueprint to take it Statewide and possible open up locations across the state. Is the business franchisable where other business owners can tap in to expand the platform? If so, how can they partner? No, the business is not franchisable at this time. However, we have launched a wholesale division that would allow us to sell our gifts through other retail stores.

Q: What is life like day to day as business owners? What does a normal day look like for the Gayles and what helps make it successful so the business has a profitable day? Our days are much like any entrepreneur. We start the day by filling online orders, handling retail customers, marketing the business and meeting the needs of our

clients. Every day is different. From family reunions to corporate gifts for a virtual meeting, there are lots of ways our customers use Georgia gifts. We’re just happy to be a great resource for them and do our best to provide excellent customer service along the way. Paying attention to the little things helps make the business profitable. Whether it’s negotiating better rates with UPS or keeping an eye on the cost of goods, we review our purchases, policies and procedures to make sure we’re being good stewards.

Q: What are 3 business tips you would give other entrepreneurs or business owners that may want to start a business in the retail industry? 1. Do your research 2. Go after a niche that will help you stand out in the marketplace 3. Know your strengths and weaknesses and surround yourself with good people who can help you get to where you’re going

Q: Daren you have a background in the entertainment industry working with some of the greats like Arrested Development, Tyler Perry and so on, what was that like and what are some of the things your doing today in that area? Entertainment is still a big passion for me. I am currently the owner of DarenGee Management where I manage artists and promote events. A big part of that is our Guns Down, Life Matters Tour, which is a community event to bring awareness to the rise of gun violence in Georgia and open discussions on how our community can create change. In partnership with Javon Johnson Productions, we also have a gospel stage play called Sanctified that will begin touring in October.

Q: How can our audience find you and follow you online for more information? You can find us online at www.georgiagiftsandmore.com and in store at 5001 Lavista Road, Suite A, Tucker, GA 30084.

Commissioner Vincent T. Williams sets sights on becoming New Mayor for City of Brunswick Who is Vincent T. Williams? I am currently serving my second term as Commissioner of the City of Brunswick. I am a husband, father, grandfather, pastor, entrepreneur and a life-long resident of Brunswick, GA. You’re a candidate for the mayor of the city of Brunswick what is your vision for moving the city in a positive direction? For the past eight years, I have served as a City Commissioner continually moving the City of Brunswick in its positive direction. Now as a candidate for Mayor, my four-point plan entails: housing, careers/jobs, small business development and support, and efficient allocation of resources through strategic partnerships. My vision is to build and create more affordable housing. It's important to use local and minority contractors and take advantage of government programs that prepare individuals and their families for sustainable home ownership. Education and training are the keys for preparation for any career or job. We will partner with our educational institutions, as well as our federal, state and local nonprofit programs and organizations, allowing us to strengthen those partnerships and remove the barriers for success for careers and jobs. Small businesses are the backbone of our community, and support for them is crucial. Small businesses boosts their local economies, spur additional business growth in neighborhoods, create employment

opportunities for residents, and contribute neighborhood services and social capital. As Mayor of the City of Brunswick, I will direct and train staff to become a one-stop shop for small business development. A place where residents can learn how to start their businesses and learn more about all the government entities that are city partners that can assist them in making this process simpler. They will be able to gather information about zoning laws, permits, licenses, City fees, and etc. I believe that through our local government partners, nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, small businesses and citizens, we, as the City of Brunswick, have resources that will allow us to bring my plan into fruition and continue to move the City in a positive direction.

What are 3 initiatives you would like to accomplish as mayor in your first term? We have to create a vibrate City that encompasses a live, work, play environment. There are three initiatives that I would like to focus on within my first term: Housing, Economic Development and Recreation. Here in the City of Brunswick, our studies show we have a lack of workforce housing for home ownership, and at the same time we have blighted areas which can be developed. As Commissioner I am

Q&A

seeking strategic partnerships, public and private, to make it affordable to build and purchase sustainable affordable housing in our great city. We must also reestablish our recreation programs so that residents of all ages can improve their quality of life. With economic development, we must create a vibrant business climate that allows new companies to launch, grow and expand. We must also re-establish our recreation programs so that residents of all ages can improve their quality of life. I am going to add one more initiative to this, and that is to maintain and improve the City's financial position. When I became a City Commissioner in 2014 the City was taking out loans/TAN's(Tax Anticipation Notes) to pay its bills. Since then, we have taken a long hard look at our finances and moved the City to a positive financial position by renegotiating our contracts with the local banks and investing your City's money wisely. The end result is the City has a surplus; and it is the best financial health we’ve been in since I took office. And its due to these wise decisions that we can leverage our dollars to provide our staff with raises, and through strategic partnerships, that we can develop housing, provide job and career training and create a recreational environment for our community.

Before you chose to run as mayor, what are some of your accomplishments you've achieved up to this point as a commissioner for the city of Brunswick? As your North Ward City Commissioner for the past 8 years, I've taken a long hard look at the City's Financial health and realized the City had been taking out loans or TAN'S-Tax Anticipation Notes just to make payroll, which is unacceptable. We explored a variety of investment options and now the City has a financial surplus. Due to the additional investment revenue the City has realized, the City has not had to raise the millage rate since 2015. Also, we have been able to give our city employees raises, which had not been done in 12-15 years prior to me coming into office. We've upgraded our police and Fire fleet's. As well as our senior programs and buildings have been upgraded. Overall, since coming into office crime is down and we have worked with the Glynn County School Board to provide safer routes for our children. We have paved or repaved more miles of streets than anytime in recent history. We've reconditioned or paved new sidewalks, and walking trails. The Mansfield and L St. projects have been completed. Our S.P.L.O.S.T. projects are on schedule and on budget. We are seeking to improve our L.O.S.T. position in negotiations with the County. We have re-instated our Planning, Zoning and

appeals Commissions which is currently working on overhauling our City's ordinance and making our zoning laws favorable to both the business and residential communities. We hired the City's first Economic Development Director. We've established a tree board, which has gained the award of being a “Tree City” and they are in the process of quantifying trees as an asset for the city, allowing the City to place this tree equity on the financial bottom line for the City. Allowing the Mayor and City Commission to make a more informed decision about public trees as well as, having leverage in public tree decisions. We've worked with small business incubators to develop and encourage small business which is the backbone or our community. The City of Brunswick is recognized as a city of ethics through the Georgia Municipal Association (GMA). We've empowered and engaged the community and community leaders in the decision making process through the Neighborhood Planning Assemblies (N.P.A.'s). We implemented the Urban Redevelopment Agency along with the Land Bank to solve commercial and residential issues. And Currently we are in the engineering phase of the College Park neighborhood drainage issues. As the Mayor of the City of Brunswick, I will continue to work with our local, state, and federal partners to resolve these homeowners drainage issues and provide them with a quality of life they deserve.

What is your plan to bring more economic development to the community to create a live, work, Play environment for better quality of life? As we've discussed, quality of life is more than a job or career and a home. It is a community in which you can thrive professionally, personally, leisurely, and spiritually. Economic Development is simply one piece of the puzzle, and what we are looking at is more than one piece of that puzzle. We are looking at the full picture which entails small business growth and support, job and career enrichment, sustainable affordable housing, and a supportive community that provides resources that enables its residents to succeed. We are developing plans to make it easier for small businesses to have access to capital with revolving loan funds and grant opportunities to ensure that small businesses owners are able to start and maintain their businesses.

FM, how does that role help you educate and keep the community informed on social issues? It is a blessing to have this platform and be able to speak directly to constituents each and every week on social issues that effect our community. With my show “Community Matters”, listeners are not only able to learn more about resources offered by our community’s anchor institutions, they are also able to hear directly from leaders, both city and county, and organizations that may not have an opportunity to be heard.

In working with you we found out you are a huge advocate against gangs and gun violence, what is your plan to reduce this sort of activity in the Brunswick community? We already have a taskforce that comprises of the City of Brunswick’s Police Department and the Glynn County Police Department where we have strategically encompassed violence prevention, education and community engagement initiatives. To continue our efforts we want to recruit and retain more officers, and get more citizen involvement in law enforcement. We also need to create more recreational opportunities for our youth so that they have more activities to occupy their time.

You also work closely with the seniors of this community, as the city of Brunswick is known as a retirement hub for many of our elders... what plan is in place to create a better quality of life for senior citizens? We are an inclusive community and economic security is key to protecting the quality of life for seniors in the Brunswick community. The programs we currently offer at the Roosevelt Harris Senior Center are successful, and we are working to increase access to our senior programs. Expanding our partnerships with nonprofits, local government entities and others has allowed us to focus our efforts and service the senior community more efficiently. We will accomplish this through three main points: Housing, Retiree-friendly jobs/careers/ small business and Recreation/independence. As far as housing, many of our neighborhoods have aging homeowners who wish to stay in their homes or need more affordable options. We need to provide

additional support for rental and homeownership assistance where needed to stabilize neighborhoods. It is my objective to establish a program that works with our Community Home Investment Program and Community Development Block Grant programs that offer additional home maintenance solutions for low to moderate income residents aged 60 and older. We will also continue to work with the Brunswick Fire Department to bolster our installation of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. The City has already established a Neighborhood Beautification Grant program where we issue grants to the Neighborhood Planning Assemblies, nonprofits and other groups to beautify the neighborhoods. My plan is to also work with our small businesses, local colleges and universities to provide job training to empower our seniors, that are not quite ready to retire, to either stay relevant in their fields or transition to other positions within the workforce, if desired.

What is your plan to help small business owners that wish to do business in the city of Brunswick and what structures are in place to support small businesses? My objective is to bring our small businesses and entrepreneurs to the forefront of our vibrant future. Since I've been Commissioner for the City of Brunswick(for 8 years) we've worked very diligently to support our business community. Working with our new Economic Development Director (Travis Stegall), the Commission and I have began the process of simplifying the process of starting and doing business with and in the City of Brunswick, from streamlining the permit process to creating the www.opportunitybrunswick.com website. My next steps are to be more inclusive and bring the additional governmental partners into the fold making it a seamless transaction between government and business by involving our local government colleagues. The process includes access to capital, revolving credit loans, and zoning laws that are favorable to both the community as well as the businesses.

How can we follow you online and stay in touch with up to date information on your campaign?
