A MESSAGE CEO from the
Dear Friends of New Orleans & Company,
The year 2025 has been memorable to say the least. We woke up on January 1 to the news of a horrific act of terrorism that took the lives of 14 people and injured many more. Our community rallied together to show that our light will never be dimmed by a single evil act.
Weeks later, we faced a historic snowstorm just as 22,000 conventioneers were arriving for the National Automobile Dealers Association show. Hard-working crews, hotel managers and shop owners cleared the streets of snow and ice. Our sales team and our partners moved mountains to make the NADA meeting successful. Talk about Built to Host!
Next was Super Bowl LIX, our 11th time hosting, but under intense scrutiny following the terrorist attack. Once again, we delivered. More than 6,000 journalists were in town to tell positive stories about our resilience. Many of them said New Orleans should host the Super Bowl every year.
Then came Mardi Gras with unprecedented levels of new and successful safety measures.
The spring brought its share of challenges to international travel, with shifting sentiment and concerns over tariffs weighing on demand. Economic uncertainty also contributed to a dip in domestic travel, along with some cancellations tied to military and government spending concerns. A high-profile prison break in New Orleans made international headlines, further adding to the complexity. Still, we worked diligently to drive summer business and enjoyed several bright spots.
We hosted an overwhelmingly successful UFC 318 in July, which became the highest grossing gate in Smoothie King Center history. We had wins in the legislative session to better regulate short-term rentals to protect the authenticity of our neighborhoods. New Orleans was named the number
two favorite city in the USA by Travel+Leisure readers, moving up from the fifth spot last year.
And we just reflected on the remarkable cultural rebirth of our city as we commemorated the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. Despite experiencing one of the country’s worst natural and manmade disasters, today New Orleans stands as a top leisure and convention destination that hosts some of the most iconic events on the planet.
As we head into the final months of 2025, your team at New Orleans & Company will not let the headwinds stop us. We will stay focused on the issues that matter and make New Orleans the most remarkable, unique and welcoming city in the world.
Sincerely,
Walter J. Leger III President & CEO New Orleans & Company

Built to Host: Bringing Conventions to New Orleans
BY KELLY SCHULZ AND STEPHANIE TURNER
Have you ever driven through the vibrant streets of downtown New Orleans and spotted large groups of convention attendees bustling about? Have you wondered how they arrived in this enchanting city, not by planes, trains, or automobiles, but by the magnetic allure of its culture and charm? What draws these diverse groups to convene in New Orleans when countless other destinations beckon?
The answer lies in the dedicated efforts of an elite team of sales professionals at New Orleans & Company. Their full-time mission is to identify and attract conventions, forging connections with top meeting planners and inviting them to experience the unique spirit of New Orleans year after year. Convention sales is both an art and a science, requiring sophisticated data analysis, relentless persistence, and years of relationship-building, all while embracing the rich tapestry of New Orleans’ culture.
Each week, our local hotels and the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center host a diverse array of gatherings, ranging from intimate meetings of 30 to large-scale conferences accommodating 30,000+. Attendees hail from sectors including educators, psychiatric nurses, finance professionals, critical care physicians, tattoo artists, maritime experts, and even members of the Divine Nine. The diversity is endless, reflecting the city’s own welcoming spirit.
Yet, the competitive landscape has reached unprecedented levels of intensity. There was a time when groups would rotate through New Orleans, returning every two to four years. Today, with cities across the nation unveiling state-of-the-art convention centers—many with attached hotels—our potential clients have a wealth of options. These cities are just as determined as we are to secure group business, making our role even more crucial.
Our sales team operates with a structured approach that encompasses selling, servicing, marketing, and then
repeating the cycle. With a presence in both Chicago and Washington, D.C., we meet our customers where they are, ensuring that New Orleans remains top of mind.
Our team tours prospective customers, viewing hotels, venues, attractions, and meeting spaces under consideration. As a community, we sell with a New Orleans first mentality focusing on winning the business for our destination.
At the core of our mission is the philosophy of “Built to Host.” This commitment

means that we are not just prepared to accommodate events; we are dedicated to creating unforgettable experiences that resonate with attendees long after they leave. From the moment they arrive, we ensure that every detail reflects the warmth and vibrancy of our city. It also positions the city as a worldclass meeting and conventions huba critical distinction.
According to the U.S. Travel Association, group travel is a powerful economic engine, driving revenue, creating jobs, and fostering connections that fuel innovation and growth. When business meetings, conventions, trade shows, and other major events come to town, they generate significant visitor spending—filling hotels, restaurants, and shops, while energizing local economies across the nation.
In 2024, group travel, including conventions, trade shows, and team events, generated an impressive $126 billion, recovering to 82% of 2019 levels and projected to outpace transient travel through 2025 as the demand for face-to-face interactions continues to rise. In New Orleans, this impact is palpable, with our team bringing nearly 1,000 meetings to New Orleans

in 2024. Compared to leisure visitors, convention attendees typically stay longer, spend more, and engage more with local businesses, enriching our community.
In an increasingly competitive landscape, New Orleans has been ranked as the number three destination that hosts The Top 250 largest rotating conventions. Cvent has honored us as one of the “Top 50 Meeting Destinations in the United States” for six consecutive years. Moreover, New Orleans & Company has consistently been voted one of the best destination marketing organizations in the country, celebrated for our service, innovation, and vision.
Business and group travel foster stronger relationships, enhance collaboration, and yield tangible results. There’s simply
no substitute for face-to-face interactions, and there’s no better place to cultivate these connections than in a city as culturally rich and unforgettable as New Orleans.
Today, the team at New Orleans & Company is already confirming meetings as far out as 2040. If you belong to a professional, civic, or social organization and can help us bring your gathering to New Orleans, we would love to hear from you. Reach out to us at cnvsales@ neworleans.com. BEYOND BEADS the Kern Studios and Krewe of BOO!’s Evolution
Kern Studios is not only the largest float-building company on earth, but also one of the world’s leading specialty fabrication firms. Their team works year-round, designing and producing floats, props, large-scale themed environments, and immersive brand activations for parades, events, theme parks, and clients around the globe.
From New Orleans’ most iconic Mardi Gras krewes to global entertainment giants like Disney, Universal Studios, Chick-fil-A, and the NFL, their work blends old-world artistry with cutting-edge innovation. Their capabilities go far beyond floats—they create show-stopping pieces that transform spaces, tell stories, and bring unforgettable experiences to life. While they are deeply rooted in New Orleans tradition, their craftsmanship is showcased on an international stage, delivering creative excellence at the highest level.
Kern Studios has been central to that tradition for generations—beginning with Roy Kern in 1932, transformed by Blaine Kern Sr.’s visionary designs, and now led forward by Barry and Fitz Kern.
Their work doesn’t stop when Mardi Gras ends. Projects like Krewe of BOO!, the Sugar Bowl, and high-profile brand
activations keep their creative spirit alive year-round. Whether building floats for hometown parades or creating spectacles for global audiences, they see their role as storytellers—connecting people through moments of shared celebration.
The Evolution of Krewe of Boo!
Krewe of BOO! was founded in 2007 by Blaine Kern Sr., debuting its first parade on Halloween night in 2008 as a fundrais-
er for Hurricane Katrina relief. At the time, nothing like it had ever been done—not just in New Orleans, but anywhere—a full-scale, Halloween-themed parade with elaborate floats, custom throws, and a Mardi Gras–style spectacle.
Even though the idea—a Halloween parade with elaborate floats and custom throws—had never been attempted anywhere, the community embraced it instantly. Families, costumed revelers, and
Krewe of BOO! Float
curious visitors lined the streets in numbers that felt like Mardi Gras in October. It quickly became clear they had tapped into something special—a celebration that extended the festival season into late October and offered a family-friendly Halloween alternative.
Blaine’s youngest son, Brian Kern, took the reins in 2013, building it into the two-day event extravaganza that it is today. That growth has since earned national attention, with The New York Times and other major publications naming Krewe of BOO! one of the top Halloween attractions in the country, and even a feature appearance in the 2016 film Jack Reacher: Never Go Back.
“What began as a bold experiment has since grown into a marquee New Orleans Halloween tradition,” said Barry Kern, President & CEO of Kern Studios and Mardi Gras World. “This year’s parade carries added meaning as it comes just weeks after the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina—a reminder of the resilience, creativity, and community spirit that inspired Krewe of BOO!’s creation in the first place.”
Work Behind the Scenes
Producing large-scale parades like those for the Super Bowl and Sugar Bowl takes months of planning, artistry, and flawless execution. Kern Studios’ creative process begins with concept art before moving into engineering, sculpting, painting, and finishing—much of it by hand in their New Orleans studio. They combine traditional craftsmanship with modern tools such as 3D modeling and robotic sculpting.
Meanwhile, the Kern Studios operations team orchestrates the complex logistics: float transport, route planning, coordination with city agencies, permitting, safety protocols, and street closures. On parade day, their crew works from first light until the last float returns to ensure every detail is perfect. They are proud to say Kern Studios parades roll every day of the year—on every continent.
What’s new for the parade in 2025?
The 2025 Krewe of BOO! parade will roll on Saturday, October 25th at 6:30 p.m., unleashing a night of bigger scares, bolder designs, and more over-the-top spectacle than ever before. Paradegoers can expect jaw-dropping new floats, elaborate costumes, and a few top-secret surprises that will make this year’s procession unforgettable. True to tradition, riders will shower the crowd with locally crafted keepsake throws—all under our playful motto: “Throw Me Somethin’, Monstah!” Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned fan, this is the Halloween parade you can’t afford to miss.
