SPRING’S RAND FINALE G

May is always an exciting month in New Orleans! From Bayou Boogaloo to Greek Fest, the city is buzzing with activities. It’s peak outdoor living: it’s warm enough to enjoy the pool, but still manageable enough to drink and dine outside. May is also prime wedding season before the city begins to slow down for the summer.

In a city that never misses a reason to celebrate, we’re bringing you the ultimate guide to party season! In this issue of The Pearl, we tapped local venues, tastemakers, and creatives to share their tips and oferings for making any occasion picture-perfect.

If you’re in need of tablescape inspo, fip straight to Feast Your Eyes for three gorgeous settings that will make you want to host a dinner party ASAP. I love the way Ben, Jane, and Pam each interpreted the assignment and made it their own. Pair those visuals with tips from wedding planner extraordinaire Michelle Norwood in Word of Advice, and you’ve got yourself the perfect springtime fête. If you’re more interested in attending rather than hosting a party, NOMA’s Salon Supper Club should be high on your list. Read more about the inaugural event in this month’s Out & About. In honor of Mother’s Day, our gift guide is flled with fabulous gifts for mom found at boutiques across the city. We also hear from Martha Claire Breland, the owner of Judy at the Rink and mother of four girls, about motherhood in She Says. It’s equally hilarious and heartwarming! And for graduation season, we’ve rounded up a great selection of gifts that your favorite graduate will use in college or out in the real world.

We hope you enjoy this issue of The Pearl! Be sure to follow us on Instagram (@thepearlneworleans) for even more fun!

Curated and owned by local Kyla Bernberg, 812 Royal Gallery is a newer destination for art in the heart of the French Quarter. As you explore the gallery, you’ll come across high-end art of various mediums, including oil, watercolor, and acrylic. “My gallery blends the feel of a museum with the warmth of a home. Rather than following the standard white-wall gallery format, 812 Royal Gallery is divided into two unique bays, each with its own character,” Kyla shares.

One part of the gallery shows traditional Southern work, while the other half is eclectic, colorful, and is styled like a contemporary living space. “Here, art is displayed among curated antiques, all of which are also for sale. The mix of old and new is something I have always adored.”

Currently, the gallery holds the work of René Romero Schuler, Andrew LaMar Hopkins, Jim Blanchard, Masatake Kozaki, Thomas Bruno, and RJ Raizk. Visit 812 Royal Gallery daily from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m., with additional hours by appointment. For a night that combines art, music, and delicious drinks, the gallery also remains open until 8 p.m. on the first Friday of every month for the Royal Street Art Walk!

At Michelle Norwood Events, we believe every celebration — no matter the size — should feel personal, meaningful, and seamless. Whether you’re planning an intimate dinner or a grand affair, here are a few of our tried-and-true tips to create an event that’s as memorable as it is beautifully executed.

Atmosphere is everything

1 2 3 4 5

The guest experience begins the moment they walk through the door. Music, lighting, scent — these small details make a lasting first impression. Set the tone early by creating an ambiance that feels intentional and inviting.

Design one unforgettable moment

Rather than overwhelming your space with too many focal points, we recommend choosing one detail to shine. A custom bar, a dramatic floral installation, or a styled tablescape can become the signature element your guests will remember long after the event ends.

Michelle Norwood is a top wedding and event planner in New Orleans and beyond. She is known for creating and executing unique, deeply personal events. To learn more about working with Michelle, visit michellenorwood.com.

Build in time to be present

A perfectly timed schedule is essential but so is breathing room. We always allow space for organic moments to unfold. It’s often in those unscripted pockets that the most meaningful memories are made.

Hospitality is in the details

Exceptional hospitality goes beyond great service. It’s the warm welcome drink, the comforting late-night bites, and the thoughtful touches that reflect your story. Prioritize your guests’ comfort and delight in ways that feel authentic to you.

Let your personality lead

The most successful events are a true reflection of the host. Incorporate personalized touches — whether it’s a favorite cocktail, a curated playlist, or family-style dishes that evoke nostalgia. These elements ground the event in meaning and make it uniquely yours.

The Breland Family

otherhoodM She SAYS:

We are getting a dog. That statement is fact or fiction depending on who you ask in our house. My daughters and I are paws-itively pro-pup and their father is our antagonist.

T he girls and I agreed on a Goldendoodle with its claims of no shedding and therefore no fuss. “Schnitzel” will be a shedless tribute to our time living in Europe. She’ll be the color of the perfectly breaded and fried staple of Germany. We will say things like “oh you little Schnitz” when she’s naughty. She’s already the perfect pretend addition to our family. I confidently relayed our decision to a friend who was quick to correct this fantasy. “You know, some still shed? It just depends on how the genetics pan out. They are still half Golden.”

I grew up with Golden Retrievers and believe there is no better breed,

but I am already overwhelmed by the combined shedding of four longhaired girls and worry a four-legged friend might break my vacuum and my spirit.

G enetics has been a topic in our house with the arrival of our blueeyed baby last year. My husband and I have brown eyes and after singing “Brown Eyed Girl(s)” for 11 years, we’re having to change our tune. Our family is now the perfect Punnett Square and while I can’t take sole credit for her eyes, I will happily call dibs on any positive personality traits.

W hat’s even easier is assigning blame for their “shedding.” When the girls were little, my husband and I would jokingly but perhaps with some truth say, “oh she got that from you” or “that’s definitely from your side” and sometimes jointly, “where did she come from?”

It feels like we’re charting new territory as the girls get older and the “shedding” gets serious. I feel like that clenched teeth emoji when something happens and I think, “oh she got that from me” or “that’s definitely from my side” and “I know where she came from.” The more frustrated I am with a behavior or outcome, the more likely it has been inherited from me. I’m shedding all over the place and need to grab a vacuum.

I anticipated sleepless nights and the terrible twos, but I did not anticipate the self-reflection

and work required to be a parent. I catch myself wanting to influence or shift a decision because it feels like this could be my time to get it right. The reality is: this is their turn. However, it is my turn to model healthy habits and to focus on self-love, growth, and acceptance and to be a loyal, affectionate, and understanding Golden (obviously me).

A nd if there is a stereotypical stubborn Poodle reading this: we still want a dog. I’ll risk the vacuum. Mother’s Day is around the corner, and I haven’t seen a gift.

When looking to make a career change after the birth of her third child, Martha Claire Breland purchased Judy at the Rink , a local giftshop located inside of The Rink (2727 Prytania Street), in 2019. Since then, Martha Claire has brought in unique vendors from across the globe, many of which she discovered while living abroad with her family in Germany. She is now the mother of four daughters and splits her time between New Orleans and Houston, Texas.

THE ART OF A Look Inside NOMA’s Salon Supper Club GATHERING

While the New Orleans Museum of Art is revered for its permanent collection and exciting exhibition schedule, the institution is also known for hosting fabulous soirées. This May, NOMA introduces its newest party series that rethinks the traditional museum gala and aims to reach a variety of audiences with its focus on food and art. The Salon Supper Club Presented by First Horizon Bank debuts Thursday, May 22, and celebrates N icolas Floc’h: Fleuves-Océan, Mississippi Watershed

The event series was designed to provide a special entry point building on key parts of NOMA’s exhibition schedule. The museum worked with French photographer and visual artist Nicolas Floc’h and collaborators following the artist’s 2022 residency with Villa Albertine in New Orleans. Nicolas Floc’h: Fleuves-Océan, Mississippi Watershed explores how everyone is connected by water cycles and systems. Expect to see a mix of vibrant underwater photographs with sweeping blackand-white landscape shots from Louisiana and beyond. The Salon Supper Club became a natural way to toast NOMA and the exhibition, which is on view through February 22, 2026.

The inaugural Salon Supper Club is co-chaired by Mary Beth Benjamin, Katherine Duncan, and Ileana Feoli. Each has a longstanding relationship with the museum, shaped in part by their families and other opportuni-

ties over the years (Mary Beth and Ileana even interned as college students). “It’s been really meaningful to carry that connection forward and to be part of something that continues to grow and evolve while staying rooted in the community,” Mary Beth shared.

For this premiere event, the goal was to create a celebration that feels fresh, thoughtful, and uniquely NOMA, and

the co-chairs have had a hand in the details from the beginning. “We’ve loved having the opportunity to connect Floc’h’s visual work with the unique food and music that characterize our region,” Katherine said. “We’re especially interested in how Floc’h’s work explores the entirety of the Mississippi Watershed, and we thought it was important to situate New Orleans within the broader Watershed so we worked with

“We can’t wait to kick off this exciting new series and bring a wonderful group together to celebrate art, cuisine, and culture — a New Orleanian’s favorite pastimes!”

“It’s hard to overstate the impact that the Mississippi River has on our lives and livelihoods given its importance to our natural surroundings, our climate, and our commerce. Floc’h’s work reminds me that we cannot take the river for granted and that we need to take climate change and its impacts seriously.”

the museum to create a map showing the full Watershed and our place within it. The map will be placed on the gallery floor. And we couldn’t forget to tie in a musical element, so we’re excited to have a Zydeco band welcoming guests to the event!”

To accompany the art, the cochairs wanted to tie in food and drinks inspired by the river. Chef E.J. Lagasse of Emeril’s is lending his fine dining talents to the event and will be preparing his signature savory cheesecake topped with smoked salmon, caviar, dill, and finished with gold leaf. Ralph Brennan Catering and Events at Café NOMA is curating a special menu inspired by Floc’h’s work featuring local seafood. Be on the lookout for espresso martinis which are the color of the muddy Mississippi River, of course!

Along with support of the museum, the co-chairs are backed by a robust event committee. “The committee includes a great group of creative, passionate, and driven individuals who often give so much to the community of New Orleans,”

Ileana shared. “We’re excited to put our heads together to celebrate Floc’h’s work while at the same time raise awareness for how vital it is to preserve the beautiful Mississippi River. Celebrating this new exhibition also reminds us how important it is for our generation — and future generations! — to support this kind of access to art in our city.”

Support for the Salon Supper Club provides critical resources to exhibitions, educational initiatives, and programming at NOMA. The second Salon Supper Club will take place Thursday, July 17, followed by the third on Friday, October 3.

“This fresh format gives us the chance to highlight different exhibitions and experiences throughout the year, while still gathering the community to celebrate and support the museum,” said Mary Beth. “So, for everyone who usually shows up for Odyssey in the fall — this is your moment! Come be a part of something new.”

Feast Eyes YOUR

t houghtfully set table is necessary when hosting a seated dinner party, as it’s scattered with eating and drinking vessels. However, beyond functionality, it can set the tone for an event by being beautifully adorned. We asked three local creatives to put their spin on a seasonal tablescape and share tips that might inspire you when creating your own.

LOUISIANA SPRINGTIME

Bayou Picnic

When first tackling a table design, owner and founder of Hazeltine Scent Company Jane Bleecker loves to lean into what’s in season, whether it’s flowers, produce, or scents. She describes her decorating style as eclectic and unserious by utilizing lots of colors, patterns, and vintage items! “I love an object with a story and anything handmade.”

The backdrop for her seasonal table was a beautiful iris tablecloth from Seasoned which was layered with fresh strawberries, gooseberries, and cherry tomatoes; a cheetah planter; mini red candles; tie-dye napkins from Dyers Dyes; and various objects of di ferent heights and colors which kept things interesting. “You’re pretty likely to see my latest thrift store treasure, whether it’s vintage barware or mismatched colorful linens.” Right on theme, Jane’s handmade Terre Bonne candles served as a cohesive element to this whimsical display. “They smell like oakmoss and mud and swamp flowers.”

In terms of hosting, Jane is a fan of casual, outdoor events. “I live in the Bywater so my house is a Mardi Gras stopover, and I like that vibe — come in, grab a drink and snack, and then we can all go out into the world.” Her featured table setting can shine outside or bring the feeling of nature indoors with pops of yellow, blue, orange, red, and purple! DINNER PARTY

One-of-a-kind pieces with character and charm can add a special element to any table. A huge fan of thrifting and keeping up with local estate sales, Benjamin Morrison loves to seek out these unique items, prompting him to start Westover Vintage (@westovervintage) in 2020, an Instagram-based shop that sells antiques and vintage home décor.

While curating his dinner party tablescape, Ben leaned into his colorful classic aesthetic, choosing timeless pieces that are still exciting. “I always put something fun on the table — like knife rests that look like animals or pot de cremes in the shape of strawberries or a water jug that looks like a fish,” Ben shared. “I find a fun piece like that always works as a good conversation starter.”

He also utilized finds from other local Instagrammers such as Bordallo Pinheiro cabbage dinner plates from @thymetoacquire, vintage napkins from @lula_eclectic, and a stunning champagne bucket from @sidehaulnola. Heirloom candleholders from his grandparents, fresh flower arrangements by Lizzie Legarde, Theresienthal Meyr’s Nefe coupe glasses from a Big Easy Estate Sale, and vintage pink depression glass from his Aunt Jean added to this bright display.

To style your own dinner party table, Ben’s biggest tip is to borrow pieces from others. “My mom and her friends borrow each other’s sterling flatware, crystal, and china when they are having a big dinner party. Ask your cousin to use her pretty tablecloth or borrow your great-aunt’s silverplate flatware.”

“I’m

a fan of intimate dinners. Obviously, it’s easier to visit with all your guests and as a host who loves to use vintage, I sometimes only find four to six pieces in a certain pattern — and at an intimate dinner I can still utilize those pieces and create a cohesive tablescape!”

CLASSIC Garden Party

As an avid hostess (especially during the holidays!) and florist for 35 years, Pamela Dennis Georges is a fan of having an arrangement be the focal point of a table. Her Garden District shop PamelaDennis inside The Rink (2727 Prytania Street) creates arrangements of all sizes, colors, and varieties for any occasion! She can bring your floral dreams to life by creating everything from bridal bouquets and a wedding chuppah to floral wreaths and centerpieces for events.

Her tablescape surrounded an effortless garden theme featuring earth tones like sage green and amber. Hints of pink and white brighten the set-up through the florals and her grandmother’s china, as well as the flatware, a blossoming napkin ring, and a circular placemat from Maisonette, a fine linens and giftware shop located just next door. The star of the show was the centerpiece that included hydrangeas, butterfly ranunculus, orange parrot tulips, stock flowers, pink expression roses, spirea, and viburnum in a large vase.

Pam describes her decorating style as minimalist but also colorful, which isn’t surprising considering the endless types of flowers. When crafting a table, she loves mismatching pieces — like the glassware in this display — while also focusing on simplicity by keeping the tableware to a minimum.

Store: Friend & Company Fine Jewelers

Fo r almost 50 years, Friend & Company Fine Jewelers has dazzled New Orleans. Owners Ken and Nina Friend have found joy in being a part of special occasions and building client relationships that last a lifetime. “Just last week, [we] sold an engagement ring to a young man whose dad bought his mom’s engagement ring from [us] as well,” the married couple shared. “Being a small part of multi-generational love stories is very meaningful to us.”

Besides its beautiful jewelry selection, exceptional service, and attention to detail when designing custom pieces, the Uptown shop is also known for its canine companions. Upon entering, you may spot Ellie, a six-year-old English Cream Golden Retriever who loves to sit at the top of the stairs for a prime view of the front door. Spending most of her time sleeping at home, Ellie is always ready to socialize at work and is happy to show you around. With years of jewelry experience, Ellie gravitates towards diamonds — after all, diamonds are a girl’s best friend!

Perusing the shop or hanging in Ken’s ofce, you may find Ranger, Ellie’s brother and the newest and sweetest team member. So far, his favorite thing about work is watching his dad sketch when clients inquire about designing a one-of-akind piece. In terms of recommendations, the British Black Labrador has a soft spot for Spode’s Woodland Collection found in the gift department — there’s a plate featuring a dog that looks just like him! Ken and Nina love having Ellie and Ranger at the store, as they add to the family business atmosphere while keeping things exciting. They also love taking the pups to Satsuma, for walks in Audubon Park and along St. Charles Avenue, and to Jeferson Feed to get new toys.

Whether you’re curating a bridal registry, selecting a milestone gift, or dreaming up the perfect engagement ring, Friend & Company supplies timeless pieces that leave a lasting impression. “It is very rare to have a jewelry store that ofers antiques and estate jewelry, new production jewelry, and custom designed pieces all in the same place.” There’s something for everyone, even those just tagging along for the shopping trip can benefit by hanging out with this charming dog duo.
