Talks Money

Tips for discussing finances before getting hitched

Cake tastings, dress shopping and venue tours might be some of the more fun aspects of wedding planning, but one of the most important conversations couples can have before saying “I do” is about money.

It might not be as romantic as picking a honeymoon destination, but discussing how you’ll handle finances together before tying the knot can have a lasting impact on the health of your relationship.

“As you get engaged, it’s a time to talk about dreams, and that should involve money,” says Jude Boudreaux, a senior financial planner at The Planning Center. “How we communicate about money is a big deal. It can be uncomfortable to talk about, but if you’re about to get married, there shouldn’t be anything that’s of the table.”

Pre-wedding financial discussions can include long-term goals like having children — and decisions around private or public schooling, college savings and other major future expenses like homeownership.

But they should also extend to more immediate household matters, such as how chores and unpaid labor will be divided, or whether one partner wants to take the lead in managing the household finances.

“We need to be in agreement about an organizational chart for a household, and figure out who is responsible for what,” Boudreaux says. “Someone’s taking out the garbage, someone’s cooking. And someone is usually more involved with the finance part, so it’s important to communicate and have a way to check in on things.”

In some ways, Boudreaux says, a marriage is similar to a business partnership — and that requires transparency about spending habits, financial hurdles and shared goals for the future.

Couples should also be aware of the legal implications of marriage when it comes to finances.

For example, some states, like Louisiana, are considered community property states, where assets acquired after the marriage license is issued are equally owned by both spouses. Prenuptial agreements are also a good idea, especially if both parties have assets of their own going into the marriage.

“They are becoming more common and the stigma is lessening,” Boudreaux says. “People are getting married later and have more independent assets, especially if you have kids from a prior marriage.”

Having open conversations such as, “Here’s what I own, here’s what I owe,” Boudreaux says, can set the tone for a healthy and realistic foundation.

That should include a discussion about student loans, other debts and interest, inheritance, property ownership and anything else that is a source or drain on finances.

It’s also crucial to talk about the emotional aspects of these assets or burdens.

For example, does one partner want to sell of property because it requires too much maintenance? Does the other want to pay of their student loans before starting a family or moving into a bigger house?

Boudreaux recommends talking about “the feelings and the assessments of things” to find out what each partner’s priorities are.

Talking about money doesn’t need to be constant, especially because it can be an ongoing stressor of a relationship.

Instead, Julia Davis, a financial planning analyst at The Planning Center, says she recommends setting aside time for a regularly scheduled “money date” to help mitigate financial stress.

Couples should discuss finances and goals before tying the knot.
PHOTO BY MILADIN PUSICIC / GETTY IMAGES

…there are no set rules for figuring this out, so being able to talk about it comfortably will help establish boundaries and flexible rules that fit with your income and preferences.

That can be simply sitting down at a cofee shop with a notebook or just making time to go over bills and goals and generally check in with each other to see if priorities are being met or if they’ve shifted.

These meetings can also be helpful for upcoming changes in expenses, whether utility rates are climbing or if there’s an upcoming holiday or trip that will require more spending than usual.

“Having that time and space carved out makes it feel less scary,” Davis says.

Both Davis and Boudreaux say there are no set rules for figuring this out, so being able to talk about it comfortably will help establish boundaries and flexible rules that fit with your income and preferences.

One way that can help couples navigate shared expenses — like a mortgage or rent, groceries and utilities — is to establish joint bank accounts specifically for necessities, and another one for a shared savings account.

That could require each partner putting aside a designated

amount or contributing diferent amounts based on their income.

For example, Boudreaux says he has a client whose salary was 53% of the couple’s combined income, so she paid 53% of the household bills.

“You can be as specific as you want as long as there’s communication and a shared vision,” he says.

With a majority of couples these days bringing in their own income, not everything has to go into a joint account, of course.

It’s also recommended for each partner to have some of their own disposable income, including money for “guilt-free” spending. There can be accounts designated “yours, mine and ours,” Boudreaux says.

“There should be some money you all agree to that you’re not accountable for,” he adds. “If I want to go to a cofee shop and it bothers my spouse — or she wants to shop — that money can be in a separate account. As long as you’re communicating, practically anything can work.”

Advice and trends in wedding photography

WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY TODAY IS MORE THAN JUST POSED PORTRAITS — it’s become a fully immersive experience for couples and the photographers documenting their day.

For photographers, that often means an all-day shoot, capturing everything from early-morning bridal hair and makeup sessions to late-night pizza parties on the dance floor. It’s not just about the biggest moments anymore, it’s about creating a visual story, almost like a documentary — except with a bit more polish.

Clients are expecting photographers to not only get all the key scenes like the first kiss and the first dance, but also the in-between moments that show the couple’s person-

ality and spontaneity. As wedding photographer Linka Odom says, clients want their photographers to “capture personalities with fun, candid shots.”

“I’ve had quite a few inquiries about candid, documentary style photos, but like something you’d see in a magazine,” she says. Clients tell her, “‘I don’t want typical posing — I want it to be natural, efortless and chic.’ ”

Heather Schneider of Dark Roux Photography says lighting also plays a big role when it comes to creating a more natural, relaxed look.

“For a while, it was like, “What team are you on? Are you dark and moody, or are you light and airy?” she says. “Now I’m finding that people just want photos that are more true to color and are getting away from filters.”

GET TO KNOW THE PHOTOGRAPHER BEFORE

In order to get efortless looking photos, it helps if couples are comfortable in front of the lens. That often starts with building a relationship with the photographer ahead of time.

Odom, for example, has potential clients fill out three questionnaires to find out more about what they’re looking for and what their personalities are like. That helps her tailor her approach.

“I want to know if one of them is outgoing, if they like [public displays of afection], if they’re touchy feely or if they’re not. Do they like being in front of the camera? I ask a lot of questions so I’m prepared ... I get to know them as much as I can possibly can.”

Odom says she also typically carves out one-onone time with the couple for a portrait session on

their wedding day, which ranges from anywhere from 30-60 minutes.

This also gives them time to relax and step away from a potentially overwhelming scene.

“One of the reasons I became successful is because I realized it’s not just about my photography,” she says. “It’s about being truly focused, being a calming presence for the couple. I’m a little bit of a therapist on the day of the wedding ... Giving people time to get used to having a camera around is important and being patient and cheerful goes a long way in getting people to feel comfortable.”

Clients are trending toward an efortless, candid look, but that still requires a bit of direction from a photographer.

BOOKING AHEAD

How far in advance to book a photographer varies. In general, most like at least a few months of lead time to clear their schedules.

Schneider says she’s had couples reach out a year and a half ahead of their wedding date. But she’s also had couples hit her up the day before they spontaneously decide to elope. But even couples who haven’t fully gotten to know her tend to relax in front of the camera, regardless of prep time. That’s when the truly candid, emotional moments happen — when couples are so caught up in the moment they forget they’re being photographed.

One of her favorite moments to capture is the first look. “They freak out and see each other and talk to each other, and all those reactions, smiles and hugs — those are super genuine. They just get to enjoy the moment while we’re getting really great pictures,” she says.

Ultimately, wedding photographers agree their job is about helping couples feel confident while documenting their whole whirlwind experience.

“It’s about the couple feeling seen and not judged,” says Odom. Photographers “are there to honor them and capture their personalities. If you’re confident and relaxed and having a good time, they’ll relax. It’s important to just be in the moment and be present and focus on making the day as fun as possible.”

Backdrops New Orleans

WITH AN ABUNDANCE OF HISTORIC BUILDINGS AND ROMANTIC VENUES, New Orleans has a huge advantage over other cities when it comes to providing scenic backdrops.

Odom says as a photographer she thrives the most when she’s in a setting where there’s lots of character, including the French Quarter.

When she shoots elopements, for example, she says often she’ll spend the whole day with the couple, sometimes traveling to three or four locations around the city.

“Maybe start in the French Quarter, then City Park, and take them to Lake Pontchartrain for sunset. I will help them craft the vision they say they want,” she says.

Schneider says a majority of her clients hire her for their destination weddings in New Orleans.

“They really want to embrace New Orleans, particularly the Quarter and City Park,” she says. “They are being really thoughtful not only with the (venue for the) ceremony and reception, but also where they’re getting ready.”
