La leggenda narra di un certo Nicola (Cola di Messina), figlio di un pescatore, soprannominato Colapesce per la sua abilità nel muoversi in acqua. La sua fama arrivò al re di Sicilia ed imperatore Federico II di Svevia che decise di metterlo alla prova: il re buttò in acqua una coppa che venne subito recuperata da Colapesce. Il re gettò allora la sua corona in un luogo più profondo e Colapesce riuscì nuovamente nell’impresa. La terza volta il re mise alla prova Cola gettando un anello in un posto ancora più profondo ed in quell’occasione Colapesce vide che la Sicilia posava su 3 colonne delle quali una piena di vistose crepe e segnata dal tempo. La leggenda vuole che Colapesce decise di restare sott’acqua si sostituì alla colonna sorreggendo la Sicilia per evitare che sprofondasse.

The legend tells of a certain Nicola (Cola di Messina), son of a fisherman, nicknamed Colapesce for his ability to move in the water. His fame came to the king of Sicily and emperor Federico II di Svevia who decided to test him: the king threw a cup into the water which was immediately recovered by Colapesce. The king then threw his crown in a deeper place and Colapesce again succeeded in the undertaking. The third time the king put Cola to the test by throwing a ring into an even deeper place and on that occasion Colapesce saw that Sicily lay on 3 columns, one of which was full of showy cracks and marked by time. Legend has it that Colapesce decided to stay underwater replaced the column supporting Sicily to prevent it from sinking.
