news you need to know… South Africa’s three musketeers against the Eskom-power-crisis! ■ WESTERN CAPE

CAPE TOWN | VELDBRAND NEWS

The energy experts, stepping forward to help solve the country's energy crisis, collectively have more than five and half thousand years of experience. Trade union, Solidarity, on Thursday last week, sent its list of 300 power experts to Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan and Eskom CEO André de Ruyter. Solidarity Chief Executive Dirk Hermann emphasised that Eskom must be stabilised as soon as possible, and these specialists have the knowledge and skills, to make this happen. “This list contains some of the country’s leading experts in the field and we are

astonished, not only by the wealth of expertise and knowledge of these individuals offer but also by their willingness and eagerness to tackle South Africa’s energy crisis,” he said. Hermann said the current crisis at Eskom is too extensive for a single party, including the state, to solve on its own. “About seventy percent of the experts on the list are involved in generation, while sixteen percent can be involved in distribution, six percent in transmission, and around eight percent of the experts offer commercial management and other skills,” stated Hermann. media@veldbrandmediasa.co.za

Suspect in gang rape case here in Kuruman wanted

KU RUMAN | CORNÉ VAN NOORDWYK An identikit of one of the wanted suspects linked to a gang rape incident last month here in the Northern Cape has been officially released by the police. Spokesperson for the police Lieutenant Colonel Sergio Kock said that the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit are seeking assistance in tracing a person of interest in an alleged Batlharos rape case. This after a female was gang raped by two men recently. Kock said: “The female complainant reported that on Sunday, 31 July 2022 at about 03:50, she was on her way home from Gamonare Section in Batlharos, here in Kuruman when she was accosted by two unknown men.” Kock also said the men dragged her into a nearby abandoned house and raped her several times. “The suspects also robbed her of R300 and a cellphone,” he said. “The complainant described one of the suspects as being 1.55m in height, between 22 and 29 years old, dark in complexion, slender and was wearing a black hoodie. ”Kock added to his statement to the media. “Anyone with information of the person of interest in the ID kit must please contact Captain Caren Nel on 082 492 3920 or 053 712 9800 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or utilize the MySAPS app. The investigation continues,” said Kock. media@veldbrandmediasa.co.za The identikit of the wanted suspect. Kuruman has next best performing municipality in 2022, but it falls short of national requirements

PICTURE: AFRIFORUM (SUPPLIED) KU RUMAN | CORNÉ VAN NOORDWYK An audit conducted by AfriForum recently has found that the landfill site at Orania is the only one in the Northern Cape that is compliant with government regulations. In their research, the lobby group made a number of discoveries that put the town head and shoulders above its competitors. According to the report: A total of 18 landfill sites audited in the Northern Cape this year, only Orania met the national standards. It scored a very respectable 90 points in the survey. This improved on totals of 82, 80, and 66 in the past few years. Kuruman, here in the Ga-Segonyana Local Municipality, is the Northern Cape’s next best performer in 2022. But, with a score of just 38, it falls short of national requirements. The landfill site a Williston, meanwhile, scored a ‘zero’ (0). This matched its humiliating total from 2021. While Orania will be all too happy to crow

about these results, AfriForum remain concerned about the low standards of refuse service in the Northern Cape. They believe that ‘large-scale mismanagement’ is now causing a great amount of decay in municipalities across the province. “This year, AfriForum audited 162 landfills nationwide. This was part of this organisation’s national project to measure the quality of landfills in South Africa. Only one out of 18 landfill sites audited in the Northern Cape met national standards. The most common problems that AfriForum found during the audit are the absence of waste management licenses and a complete mismanagement of sites. Municipal decay is the order of the day. Smaller municipalities in particular suffer from large-scale mismanagement.” - AfriForum statement (media@veldbrandmediasa.co.za)

BOSTON CITY CAMPUS | Veldbrand | 07

ACCOUNTING - the career that adds up to personal success AU THOR | BOSTON CITY CAMPUS International research shows that the accountancy and finance sector is seen as the third most stable profession, behind health/ pharmaceuticals, and teaching. One in four employees aged 16-34 is currently considering a new career as the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic bites. Positions available in the various areas of finance include for bookkeepers, credit controllers, debt collectors and financial managers, as well as assistant accountants and chartered accountants. The basic nature of these kinds of jobs remain the same despite advancing computer systems: manage and carry out the administration of financial transactions that take place in an organisation. Bookkeepers keep record of all the financial transactions that take place in an organisation. Public and municipal services, commerce, industry and educational institutions employ bookkeepers; private and parttime owner – managed practices have also become more popular. Nonhlanhla Dube, Career Consultant at Boston City Campus says that, “Bookkeeping is considered a scarce skill (visit www.fasset.org.za) and therefore is a career that should be considered by those that are numerically and detail oriented, as well as committed to finding secure employment”. She mentions that South Africa has a shortage of people working in Bookkeeping and Accounting positions. These positions are consi stently in the top ten scarce skills. Positions exist in corporate and industry, as well as Government and municipalities. The credit controller (see here: https://www.boston.ac.za/boston-

citycampus/qualifications/accounting-programmes/creditcontroller-assistant-bookkeeper/) is responsible for opening new client accounts, managing monthly payments and handling all liaison and administrative duties arising from purchase transactions. With the Boston Diploma in Financial Accounting, career opportunities such as assi stant accountant serve as either a job, or a good starting point from which to advance if you are ambitious in your accounting! Opportunities for advancement include financial accountant, financial manager and financial director as you gain more experience and skills. Career opportunities where skills are considered scarce include: Trainee Accountant, Debt Collector, Finance Manager, Management Consultant, Office Administrator, General Accountant, General Clerk, Accounts Clerk and Payroll Clerk. The Boston Higher Certificate in Accounting Practice has you working in an accounts office within one year, and opens doors to further study in the field. The Chartered Accountant (CA) is licensed by the state to audit financial information for public companies for accuracy. CAs can also work for themselves completing taxes or accounting for individuals. To start on thi s pathway, register for the SAICA approved Boston Bachelor of Accounting. SAI CA i s the South African institute of Chartered Accountants, responsible for accreditation of accountants and auditors, and providing entrance and approval to sit for the accounting board exam. Accountants and auditors help to

ensure that firms are run efficiently, its public records kept accurately, and its taxes paid properly and on time. They analyse and communicate financial information for various entities such as companies, individual clients, and government. Fundamental accounting day-to-day tasks include: analysing, and verifying financial documents, offer budget analysis, financial and investment planning, information technology consulting, the design of accounting and data-processing systems, and the selection of controls to safeguard assets. What can I study? Still at school and considering subject options? “Try and go for the numerate subjects such as maths, science, accounting and business studies”, says Alida Hattingh of Boston Welkom. “We see many people asking if they have to take these subjects in high school, and honestly, your chance of success in tertiary studies is so much higher if you have the background skills and knowledge from school” she says. Do you want to work in the accounting industry? Alida says that “You need to have an aptitude for maths and or numeracy, be a methodical and organised person, communicate well and be able to be assertive and sensitive at the same time. Maintaining discretion is essential, and you will need to be the kind of person that can integrate information and from that draw conclusions”. “Finance is a recession-proof career,” says Alida. “No business can function, never-mind succeed, without appropriate accounting systems in place, even your own entrepreneurial business!.”

DStv ordered to reinstate axed eMedia TV channels This comes after the competition appeal court has delivered a victory to e.tv parent eMedia Holdings in its fight with MultiChoice Group over the termination of four of eMedia’s channels on DStv. In a judgment handed down on Monday, 1 August 2022, the court – which is a special division of the high court – overturned an earlier decision by the Competition Tribunal that the channels could be removed from MultiChoice’s DStv

bouquets. This is pending the final determination of the complaint, which has been referred by the appeal court to the Competition Commission for further investigation. The appeal court ordered MultiChoice to reinstate the channels that were removed from DStv at the end of May. MultiChoice terminated the channels immediately upon receiving the decision of the tribunal. The channels that were cut and that now must be

reinstated pending the commission’s investigation are eToonz, eMovies, eMovies Extra and e.tv Extra. It’s understood that MultiChoice has also been ordered to pay eMedia’s legal costs for the appeal, including the cost of two counsel. eMedia dragged MultiChoice to the tribunal in April to seek relief after a renewed channel supply agreement between the parties saw DStv opting not to carry the four channels.
