AFRICAN FASHION BRAND INSPIRED BY A SANGOMA  Courtesy of Sowetan Live KATHU: Business-person, Nape Phasha, is not just the owner of a local SA clothing brand, he also wants to upskill his employees to establish their own brands. Phasha, 36, who lives here in Kathu, the iron ore capital of the Northern Cape, is the founder and CEO of Dlozi Ngwana Badimo – an African fashion brand he started in July last year. Phasha, who also works as a diesel mechanic at the Kumba iron ore mine here in Kathu, said his mother’s journey as a traditional healer (sangoma) played a role in coining the name for his clothing label. “After my mother got married she couldn’t bear children so she consulted traditional healers and they told her she couldn’t have children because she did not pursue

her calling of being a sangoma. She then underwent the initiation process of being a sangoma and she became one. She was then able to have children and I was among the children she gave birth to. Sometimes when she was walking around with me in our area in Limpopo, the community members would say to her that ‘ke ngwana wa ga go woo o fileng ke badimo’ (this is the child you got from the ancestors). So that’s what inspired the name of my clothing brand,” Phasha explained how he got his inspiration. Phasha said that he was born and raised in Sekhukhune, Limpopo. Dlozi produces sneakers, T-shirts, sweaters, tracksuits, caps, and sunglasses, among other things. Dlozi is an online shop. Phasha said his brand is a movement that aims to

inspire Africans to embrace their ancestry and not just a clothing brand. “Africans should learn to wear clothes that represent them. Dlozi is a movement. We should embrace our ancestors through fashion,” said Phasha. The skilled artisan said he is proud to have established a brand that African people can be proud of. “My customers are happy. The reaction to our brand has been good. We have delivered clothing to all provinces in SA and as far as Nairobi, Kenya, and Lubumbashi in the DRC. I am extremely overwhelmed to see Africans wearing my brand on the streets without being ashamed. We should continue representing the underground gang [ancestors],” said Phasha. Dit voel of ons nutteloos is, sonder enige waarde.

KUMBA CONNECTING ALL THE EMPLOYEES  By Lebohang Tlaba KATHU: Kumba Iron Ore’s Sishen Mine here in Kathu has become one of the first mines in the world to launch its own radio station as it looks to increase employee engagement and keep safety top of mind in and around its operations. The new station will broadcast a mix of music and company messages to around 12 000 employees within a 5km radius of the mine, using its own employees as presenters. Any Kumba employee or service provider can apply to volunteer as presenters and they will

receive relevant training before hitting the airwaves. Kumba Iron Ore’s George Benjamin, Manager: Corporate Affairs and Social Performance said that the idea for the radio station was born from the concern that operators working in the pit are not exposed to safety messages. “Safety is our absolute top priority in our operations. By installing radios in the trucks and at various locations in the mine, we will be able to maintain awareness around various aspects of safety throughout the day,” said George.

The station, which has already applied for an ICASA license, plans to broadcast 24 hours a day …The station, which has already applied for an ICASA license, plans to broadcast 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, although some programming will be recorded and repeated to ensure all shifts get to hear important messages. Programming will focus on SHEPS (safety, health, environment, and protection services), community development, sustainability, company performance, skills development, education, and entertainment. The primary language will be English, although there are plans to introduce other languages, like Setswana and Afrikaans, going forward. Office workers will be able to live-stream the radio from their workstations. “Covid19 has shown us that we need breakthrough thinking because livelihoods have to continue and in doing so, businesses have to remain sustainable and viable, even after Covid-19. Radio is a great tool to build employee engagement, especially at

this time. It’s more important than ever for corporates to connect with their people, and with radio, we don’t have to take people away from work and we do not have to have mass meetings but we can still engage all employees at once, repetitively,” said Thandiwe Mapi, Specialist Community Liaison, and project manager. The new station has been named C’ore FM, “Lentswe la Tshipi” (Voice of Ore), and will also encourage listeners to phone in and send messages as part of its efforts to create a two-way communication channel. The next steps include theory and technical training for the Sishen leadership team and other key people that will need to present on behalf of departments. “The training will focus on getting everyone ready to address the employees for the programme lineup we have put in place. The plan is to have a programme that engages employees

on all aspects of our business, supporting our vision of an inclusive workplace,” said Tracey Vollmer, Specialist Communication and project coordinator. C’ore FM has also turned out to be a strong enterprise development story. Kumba used only local businesses and suppliers to set up the station and provide the necessary equipment and training, providing a timely boost for the local economy. The company collaborated with the local community radio station, Kurara FM, in its planning and rollout. The station will surely transform the way communication and engagement occur in the mining space. The station's nature of being both an active and a passive medium will enable messages to be repeated to a point where employees have internalized and are able to share and engage with them. Sou u sê u is eerder 'n Plattelandse mens of stadsmens? Ek beskou myself as 'n stadsmens.

Wees jy net soos Jesaja en stel jouself beskikbaar as God se instrument: 'Hier is ek, stuur my'."

GREY COLLEGE COVID-19 OUTBREAK ROCKS PARENTS, COMMUNITY Parents and community members in Mangaung, in the Free State, were shocked by the news that 53 learners and seven teachers, including the headmaster, at Grey College Secondary School in Bloemfontein tested positive for COVID-19 last Thursday. Bloemfontein’s prestigious Grey College Secondary School has been temporarily closed after 53 students and seven staff members tested positive for COVID19 last week, prompting the department of education to suspend classes until later this month. This prompted the Free State Department of Education to temporarily close the 176-year-old school, with MEC for Education Tate Makgoe immediately ordering the suspension of secondary school classes. Makgoe posted on his official Twitter account that classes for Grade 10, 11 and 12 learners would resume on 23 August and Grade 8 and 9 classes on 30 August. A staff member, who asked not to be named, revealed that the headmaster, Jurie Geldenhuys, and other teachers tested positive after being vaccinated. Meanwhile, Free State Department of Education spokesperson Howard Ndaba said the closure was ordered to conduct the tracing and testing of other affected learners and teachers. Contact tracing underway “It is important to suspend the lessons so than officials can begin the contact tracing of the learners and other affected staff members and allow families of the affected people to also test and isolate,” he said. He added: “Grey College is a big school and it is important to shut everything to also allow for the disinfection of the entire school.” For now, the school remains the only government educational institution to have been shut due to an outbreak of COVID-19 during the third wave of the pandemic. This has sent shockwaves through the community, as parents came to fetch their children from the school. One parent, who identified herself only as Jack, told Health-e News: “The news of the learners who tested positive came as a shock to us and I have to come fetch my daughter.” Another parent and nurse Willemina Boshoff added: “The school did well to notify us and it is good that they treated the matter with caution to avoid sending shockwaves to everyone. I wish for a full recovery for all the affected learners and teachers.” Health-e News

Sal jy klik? Regtig? Of regtig nie? Dink hoe jy jou vinger by daai knoppie laat stilstaan en jy wonder: moet ek of moet ek nie? Of so dink jy! Ja, selfs as 'n geliefde se lewe kortgeknip is.

Soos selfdood. Sport bly vir my 'n rissiepit. Ek sal nooit my eerste krieketberig vergeet nie. Die manne was bitter vies vir my.

World Alzheimer's Day, 21 September of each year, is a day on which Alzheimer's organisations around the world concentrate their efforts on raising awareness about Alzheimer's and dementia. Every 68 seconds, someone develops Alzheimer's disease. Alzheimer's disease is often called a family disease because the chronic stress of watching a loved one slowly decline affects everyone. With the increases in life spans and baby boomers coming of age, support for Alzheimer’s research is more critical to our families than ever. Facts about Alzheimer's •Alzheimer's is the most common form of dementia, a general term for memory loss and other intellectual abilities serious enough to interfere with daily life. It accounts for 50 to 80 percent of dementia cases. •Alzheimer's is not a normal part of ageing. Up to 5 per cent of people with the disease have early-onset Alzheimer's (also known as younger-onset), which often appears when someone is in their 40s or 50s. •Alzheimer's worsens over time. Alzheimer's is a progressive disease, where dementia symptoms gradually worsen over a number of years. •Alzheimer's has no current cure, but treatments for symptoms are available and research continues.

BERLIN, Germany - Nissan e.dams driver Oliver Rowland scored a brilliant podium in a thrilling final race of the 2020/21 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship in Berlin. Rowland qualified in P2 for round 15, the season seven finale, and battled hard in an intense and incident-filled race to maintain his position across the line and sign off in style for his last race of three seasons competing with the Nissan e.dams Formula E team. His teammate Sebastien Buemi finished outside the points. “We are finally very happy to collect the points we deserve with a great podium by Oli today for Nissan,” said Tommaso Volpe, Nissan global motorsports director. “This P2 better represents our performance in the second half of this season, showing our stronger race pace that now matches our qualifying pace. We’ve had our fair share of bad luck this season, so it’s great for everyone in the team who have worked so hard to celebrate. As we look forward to season eight our stronger race pace gives us confidence that we can race hard and fast from the first round.” Nissan races in Formula E to bring the excitement and fun of zero-emission electric vehicles to a global audience. As part of its goal to achieve carbon neutrality across its operations and the life cycle of its products by 2050, Nissan intends to electrify all-new Nissan vehicle offerings by the early 2030s in key markets. Nissan aims to bring its expertise in transferring knowledge and technology between the racetrack and road for better electric vehicles for customers. “A great way to wrap up our season with an impressive podium for Oli,” said Gregory Driot, co-team principal of Nissan e.dams. “Ultimately, as a team, we didn’t finish where we wanted, but now we see the updated Nissan Gen2 Formula E powertrain come into its own and we will approach season eight buoyed by our race car’s speed and efficiency. Now it’s time to celebrate the podium with our incredibly hard-working and talented Nissan e.dams race team, and on behalf of everyone at the team, I would like to wish Oli all the best for the future.” Nissan e.dams finished the season in P10 in the teams championship, with Oliver Rowland in P14 and Sebastien Buemi P21 in the drivers championship, respectively. Season eight, 2021/22, of the championship begins in Diriyah, Saudi Arabia, in January. Off-Track Activities It was a busy and productive season seven away from the track for Nissan, even with the complexities of the global pandemic. By competing in Formula E, Nissan showcases to the world just how thrilling and enjoyable all-electric vehicles are to drive, and this season, like its two previous seasons of competition, the brand powerfully connected its electric racing activities to the exciting vehicles customers could buy with a series of highprofile activations. REKORD 10 New race car names, familiar racing numbers At the beginning of season seven, Nissan announced that in honor of two of its finest road-going all-electric vehicles, the drivers' all-electric race cars would be named 'Nissan Ariya' for car #23, and 'Nissan LEAF' for car #22. The cars would go on to compete with their new names and familiar race numbers throughout season seven. With the road cars clearly named on the race cars, Formula E fans would quickly and easily connect Nissan’s exciting Formula E competition to the brand’s all-electric products. It’s time to Feel Electric At the beginning of season seven, Nissan Formula E launched its ‘Feel Electric’ brand positioning. Feel Electric describes how drivers feel when they drive Nissan all-electric vehicles: Every sensation you have is electricity flowing through your body, the same electricity running through our cars. Instinctive reactions and heightened emotions. Rising euphoria and thrilling excitement. Nissan Brain to Performance Nissan Brain to Performance, launched in June 2021, is an exciting, cutting-edge new program that uses advanced brain imaging and analysis to determine the anatomical specifics of high performance, professional drivers’ brains, and, through a bespoke brain training program, seeks to enhance their brain performance in the search for greater performance on the racetrack. This innovative, long-term program will build momentum as Nissan races into season eight of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, and beyond. Driver Quotes Oliver Rowland “Today was a great day. We qualified on the front row and finished P2. Of course, there’s only one spot better and it would have been nice to win today for Nissan, but ultimately, I am happy with the job I did, as I think we maximized what we had. I’m really happy for all the guys and it was nice to be able to give them some champagne. I’ve had three fantastic seasons with Nissan, I’ve learned a lot and want to thank everyone in the team. The team has helped me develop as a driver and a person. It’s sad to be leaving, but I’m happy to end on a high today.” Sebastien Buemi “Congratulations to Oli, he did a great final race for the team, so I am happy that everyone got to enjoy the podium in this final race. It’s been a tough season for me as we’ve not really matched the expectations we had at the start of the season. We now have lots of work to do during the off-season to better understand what didn’t go well for us, so we can come back stronger in season eight.”

Production conditions for wheat are currently very good and should they continue, an excellent 2021/2022 South African wheat crop can be expected. This was according to Luan van Der Walt, Grain SA economist. Van der Walt told Farmer’s Weekly that high and widespread rainfall was recorded in South Africa’s main wheat production regions, which benefitted planting in the winter grain areas. “While the first estimates of the National Crop Estimate Committee will only be released at the end of the month, conditions are promising. “That makes it all the more important for the wheat value chain to stay abreast of the local and international market movements and trends, and to stay on top of price developments for the rest of season,” Van der Walt added. The latest international reports showed a downward trend in the Russian wheat crop due to sub-zero temperatures experienced across the production regions. This meant a decline in the expected exports from Russia, which strengthened global prices somewhat. Ukraine, on the other hand, was expecting a record crop, which would also have an impact on world prices, and could result in increased price pressure. According to the International Grains Council (IGC), it was estimated that Ukraine’s total 2021/2022 wheat crop would amount to 27,2 million tons, up from 25,5 million tons in the previous season. In January, the IGC estimated that Russia’s total grain production would reach 125,6 million tons in 2020/2021, with wheat production in particular at 84,5 million tons, compared with the previous estimate of 83,5 million tons, and the 2019/2020 crop of 73,6 million tons. However, in August, the IGC reported that “owing to elevated risks of winterkill in southern Russia, [the] wheat harvested area was predicted to dip by 1% year-on-year”, world-grain.com said. Winterkill occurred when the crown of dormant wheat was damaged by freezing conditions. According to Van der Walt, the global end-supply of wheat, expressed as a percentage of international consumption, stood at 38% in July. “This is a high supply-to-consumption ratio. Given the increased yields that would reach international markets during the next months, it could be expected that prices would remain under pressure,” he explained. Locally, South African producers realised a wheat crop of 2,1 million tons in 2020/2021, the largest since 2008/2009.

Chocolates, Cherries And Boat Rides In Free State

Ficksburg, in Free State province, is an attraction-filled rural destination 400km from Johannesburg that offers a wide range of out-of-the-ordinary activities. Gavin Boy, who runs a Ficksburg advertising agency, has put together an appealing visitor’s guide to the area that includes chocolates, cherries and a riverboat ride. ‘Our goal is to encourage people to come and explore this beautiful rural destination, and so we put together a list of exciting experiences that people of all ages and interests can enjoy,’ said Boy, also coordinator of the annual Cherry Festival. Ficksburg is the largest cherry-producing area in South Africa and hosted its first Cherry Festival in 1968. It takes place in November each year, and treats visitors to an indulgent feast of fresh, succulent cherries. If cherries are not for you, then perhaps a visit to an asparagus farm may be of more interest. There is also a chocolate factory in the village, where decadent McKinley Chocolates are made by chocolatier Calen Thomas from Alaska, who visited Ficksburg some years ago, fell in love with it and stayed. Another indulgence is White Mischief, a riverboat owned and managed by Boy. Sip cocktails or enjoy fine singlemalt whisky as White Mischief cruises along the Meulspruit Dam through Thaba Sediba Private Nature Reserve. It’s a wonderful birding experience, with more than 100 species to be spotted, including fish eagles, Goliath herons and malachite kingfishers. If you’re the active sort, you have a choice of hikes and horse trails in the area. And if you are interested in farm crafts, you can learn how to make cheese or down duvets. For an artistic experience, visit Ficksburg’s Pellissier Gallery, with its world-renowned Pierneef San murals. While in town follow the Sandstone Way, and learn about the village’s historic sandstone buildings, built from the surrounding sandstone mountains, which glow golden in the early morning and late afternoon light. WORLD LION DAY PROPELLED CALL TO END WILDLIFE TRADE World Animal Protection joined their supporters in a recent webinar to celebrate World Lion Day and addressed the alarming decrease in wild African lions across the African continent as a result of the global wildlife trade.

……“We are seeing the importance of the pet sector to the retailers in the way they are treating this category, with larger displays, or new storewithin-a-store concepts being phased in,” said Neil Meyer, marketing manager of Promeal. “However, what we have seen in the lower economic sector — which is the largest percentage of our population —is that during the pandemic, cash flow was hit hard. Pet ownership is on the rise in South Africa and so is spending on pet care. PET OWNERS WARNED OF NEW SCAM Dogtown South Africa has warned pet owners to not fall prey to a new scam. The animal shelter and rescue centre for abandoned and abused dogs said that they have received information about an individual posing as an official from Dogtown, who has been contacting

people whose pets have gone missing and telling them that they have been found. However, the organisation insists that this is just a scam. Dogtown South Africa founder Tracy McQuarrie explained that the imposter then requests that the pet owners provide proof of

ownership of their animals. “This includes but is not limited to photographs of them with their pet and ownership papers. “Dogtown staff would never ask a stranger for airtime or contact someone out of the blue,” McQuarrie added. (Source: IOL)
