La Veillée des Abysses Straight from the crescendo of The Junebug Symphony comes the feverish fantasy La Veillée des Abysses. The extraordinary James Thiérrée has fashioned another magical masterpiece in which bodies and objects collide to create an explosion of visual poetry. Contortionism, acrobatics, mysterious transformations, music and dance fuse to shape a wonderful fanfare of the physical as Thiérrée spins one utopian fantasy after another. Regular collaborators contortionist Raphaelle Boitel and opera singer Uma Yasmat are joined by Swedish dance legend Nikolas Ek, animator Gaelle Bisellach from Belgium and Brazilian acrobat and dancer Thiago Martins to cook up another virtuoso dish of fantastic invention and pure physical delight. a marvel, unlike any piece of circus that you have ever seen. NEW WRITING FROM THE UK AND THE USA bush theatre steppenwolf royal court three new plays

U.K. The Bush Theatre U.S.A Steppenwolf

The Glee Club by Richard Cameron directed by Mike Bradwell The Glee Club, an all-male singing group made up of five hard working, hard drinking miners and a church organist, is preparing for the local gala. Though well established on the working men’s club circuit they are not exactly in the vanguard of the musical revolution. Sometimes compassion and understanding, as well as bigotry and cowardice, can come from the most unlikely places. This is the summer of 1962; music and much else is about to change –

so too the lives of these six men. Richard Cameron’s The Glee Club is a beautiful drama that tugs at the emotional heartstrings. With its raucous humour and superb closeharmony song renditions, The Glee Club gives us an insightful and poignant view on six northern miners, the songs they sing and the small village and ideals, in which they live their lives. Please note that this play contains nudity.

In the small town of Pine City, Minnesota, two families are torn apart by love and betrayal. An extramarital affair draws them into a world of romantic uncertainty and disturbing moral ambiguity where people hurt each other and love keeps happening. This intense story

Flesh Wound gives us an up-close and personal look at two couples falling apart, falling together and moving on. Orange Flower Water is written by Craig Wright, award winning playwright and writer for the HBO series Six Feet Under. It is directed by Steppenwolf ensemble member Rick Snyder.

Steppenwolf Theatre Company is committed to nurturing the best new voices in the American theatre and Orange Flower Water was developed through the company's New Plays Initiative.

Vincent is always in trouble, this time with the infamous Calderazzos. His sister Deirdra stays out of danger in her flat high above the streets of London. His father, Joseph, is in the protection business, but that doesn't mean protecting his own son. Now the family needs help, it's down to Joseph.

Flesh Wound is Ché Walker's second play for the Royal Court. ...the dialogue is flawlessly sharp, stylishly hovering above the level of street-talk the better to peer with an unsentimental but compassionate eye on the self-perpetuating patterns of misery these sorry members of the urban underclass are trapped in, their humanity withered by the need to survive. Wilson Milam’s gripping production serves this slice of highrise low-life with surgical precision; a considerable cut above the rest. The Telegraph

The Royal Court is dedicated to new work by innovative writers. Described by the New York Times as the most important theatre in Europe, its pivotal role in promoting new voices is undisputed.

In 30 years The Bush Theatre has won over 100 awards and is England's leading new writing venue.

Boom Family A giant family - Mum, Dad, Grandpa and the two kids are out and about searching for the same kind of fun as everybody else. Towering over the crowds at 4m tall they are immediately recognisable icons in the landscape. Watch yourself as you may end up trapped under some massive feet. Dad falls asleep on a car, Grandpa sits down to rest his tired feet, Scotty is looking for babes and wild excitement. Kelly loves playing with strangers, but doesn't know her own strength. Mum is just happy to be out of the house.

outdoor performance

The Spheres Strange Fruit specializes in large-scale, outdoor public performance using 4 metre high flexible poles to thrust performers high over the heads of the audience. Strange Fruit's strong visual and design elements and exceptional choreography synthesize sculpture with physical theatre.

Cows Our life size herd of cows goes on the rampage: grazing on pot plants, eating people's hats, nuzzling children and occasionally getting spooked by passing traffic.

Giant illuminated orbs contain performers that gradually emerge. This piece is beautiful, reverent and sublime. The Spheres takes a whimsical look at physics, the miracle of birth and humanity's existential relationship to our planet. In the centre stands The Child, an innocent eye which beholds the baffling, comic encounters of the surrounding charactersthe Evil Queen, the Sleeping Man, the Clown, the Princess, The Huntress and The Lover. The Spheres is accompanied by an original score by Not Drowning Waving co-founder, John Phillips.

Hot on their heels is a line dancing cowboy who tries in vain to round them all up. An exercise in futility and craziness as our cows go where no real cows would dare.

performance

Tale of Two Cities An American Joyride on Multiple Tracks

Award winning playwright and performer Heather Woodbury made her Irish debut at the 2002 Galway Arts Festival with her extraordinary solo epic What Ever. Heather returns to the Festival to premiere her latest ‘living novel’, which delves into the story of how two American communities on either side of the country were changed forever. In 1957 New York lost the Brooklyn Dodgers and their playing grounds while a MexicanAmerican community in Los Angeles was evicted to make way for the newly franchised Los Angeles Dodgers Stadium. Heather has been commuting between New York and Los Angeles for the past two years, researching and generating material via a bicoastal series of new performances. The project collided with history itself as the twin towers of the World Trade Centre fell during the first month of her residency in NYC. This colossal loss and America's subsequent tragic response became a part of the contemporary narrative. Heather performs the entire three night epic for the first time for Galway Arts Festival.

Francis Wheen

Colm Toibin

In his latest book How Mumbo-Jumbo Conquered the World: A Short History of Modern Delusions, Francis Wheen evokes the key personalities of the postpolitical era - including Princess Diana, Osama BinLaden and Nancy Reagan's astrologer - while charting the extraordinary rise in superstition and emotional hysteria over the past quarter of a century. From UFO scares to dotcom mania, his hilarious and gloriously impassioned polemic describes a period in the world's history when everything began to stop making sense. Francis Wheen has worked as a diarist on many newspapers and magazines, he has been a book reviewer for Gay News, a theatre critic for Today, a news editor for New Socialist and a contributing editor of Tatler. Having presented News-Stand on BBC Radio 4 for a number of years, he has appeared often on ITV's What the Papers Say and more recently on BBC2's Have I Got News For You. He is now the writer of Wheen's World a regular column appearing in The Guardian - for which he was voted Columnist of the Year - as well as working for Private Eye (allegedly…).

His non-fiction includes Bad Blood, Homage to Barcelona, The Sign of the Cross and Love in a Dark Time. In The Master, his brilliant and profoundly moving fifth novel, Colm Tóibín tells the story of Henry James, an American-born genius of the modern novel who became a connoisseur of exile, living among artists and aristocrats in Paris, Rome, Venice and London. In The Master, Colm Tóibín takes us almost shockingly close to the soul of Henry James and, by extension, to the mystery of art itself. For nearly half a century Vevgeny Yevtushenko has been a piercing voice of conscience and today he is among the world's most widely admired living writers. Born in Zima, Yevtushenko moved to Moscow in 1944. His first important narrative poem Zima Junction was published in 1956 but he gained international fame in 1961 with Babi Yar, in which he denounced Nazi and Russian anti-Semitism.

Yevtushenko's demands for greater artistic freedom and his attacks on Stalinism and bureaucracy in the late 1950s and 60s made him a leader of Soviet youth. The publication in Paris of his A Precocious Autobiography in 1963 brought him severe official censure and he was frequently criticised by the Russian government for his nonconfirmist attitude. In 1972 Yevtushenko gained huge success with his play Under the Skin of the Statue of Liberty. Since the 1970s he has been active in many fields of culture, writing novels, notably Wild Berries, essays, and the semiautobiographical, post-Soviet work Don’t Die Before You’re Dead. In addition, he is an actor, director, and photographer. In 1989 Yevtushenko became member of the Congress of People's Deputies. Since 1990 he has been vice president of Russian PEN. He was appointed honorary member of American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1987.

At 60 he shows no signs of slowing down and he’s joined by one of Britain’s most exciting young guitarists: Bernard Butler. Since leaving Suede he has collaborated with David McAlmont and released two solo albums, as well as appearing on Jansch’s most recent album. This mix of the old and the new is riveting and rightly acclaimed.

Flight of the Conchords Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement Currently the hottest ticket in comedy, Flight of the Conchords are by their own admission New Zealand’s ‘fourth most popular folk parody duo’ yet these talented Kiwis have managed to capture the attention of the comedy industry worldwide with soldout seasons at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, their native New Zealand and Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Their unique brand of comedy is grounded in original tunes that showcase their incredible vocal and instrumental talents. Their fresh understated delivery belies a depth to their comedy that resulted in a Perrier nomination in 2003. Brilliantly underplayed, the wit is so aridly dry and yet so brilliantly stupid. These two immensely gifted comics have created a splendid environment in which to quietly savage an impressively wide range of topics… simply unmissable. Chortle, Melbourne

Chalk & Cheese

Laughter Loft

Chalk & Cheese is an everyday tale of paranoia, delusions, hallucinations, psychosis and pure gibberish. McAleer’s latest comic creation lives in a world of his own; ordinary events such as a visit to the supermarket, a letter from the postman, a phone call, can be the starting point for strange space voyages into the back of his own head. It’s insanity Jim, but not as we know it.

Des Bishop plus support Winner of the 2002 Tap Water Award at the Edinburgh Festival, native New Yorker Des Bishop has become one of Ireland's most outspoken and exciting comedians. Well known to viewers in Ireland for his appearances in X-it File, as team captain on Don't Feed The Gondolas and most recently his own show Des Bishop's Work Experience - a savagely comic series about the minimum wage experience in Ireland. Unquestionably one of the most gifted comedians to emerge in recent years. VENUE/IONAD DATE/DÁTA TICKETS/TICÉIDÍ

In the beginning was the word, and the word was comedy. The people came to see the comedy, they sat and laughed, and they saw that it was good. Amongst those watching were three young men of varying stature who saw that the comedy was indeed good. And lo they decided that they could do better, and so they did.

Perrier Best Newcomer Nominee and winner of Channel 4's So You Think You're Funny Award, Dubliner David O'Doherty is one of the most talked-about comedians to have emerged in recent years.

SML MED LRG is Eddie Bannon, Ian Coppinger and Brendan Dempsey in a blinding mix of standup and sketches that will leave the audience in a happy state of generous bonhomie – which, if distilled and drunk, would bring everlasting peace and happiness.

A curious mix of songs and stories and half-songs and half-stories, his stand-up style draws as much in spirit from comedy as it does from jazz music.

Sharon O’Malley’s latest body of work threads together connections between Classical Greek, Celtic, pagan and religious imagery. The painter’s unique modern realisation and personal interpretation of these rich themes continues to garner acclaim.

Nora Maycock & Wanda Yu-Ying Hu INSIDE/OUT, a joint exhibition of work by Nora Maycock and Wanda Yu-Ying Hu. Nora Maycock centres on general concepts of subjectivity, exploring a fluid and performative idea of identity. Wanda Yu-Ying Hu takes a more personal self-analytical approach, focusing on the differences between Eastern and Western culture. For this exhibition, Nora Maycock presents a new installation titled “Mappings of a Silent Theatre” and “Micro Macula” as well as new paintings, while Wanda Yu Ying Hu presents a new site specific installation related to the architecture of the body.

Erwin Wurm Austrian avant-garde sculptor Erwin Wurm makes his Irish debut at Galway Arts Festival. Wurm’s sculptural installations are created from the human body choreographed into absurd and witty relationships with objects of everyday life vegetables, crockery, items of furniture. Each sculpture exists for barely a minute before gravity triumphs and everything collapses. The humorous quality of Wurm's work belies a serious investigation into the relationship between performance, sculpture and photography. Wurm created a series of images in Galway in May this year. His photographs of these human sculptures are exhibited as light-boxes on the facades of various Galway buildings.

Tom Matthews A Gander Through The Old CV

Seán McSweeney is one of Ireland’s leading artists whose bog pools and Sligo landscapes are iconic in Irish painting. Vibrant primaries mingle with dense blacks to suggest an almost primal depth. This exhibition of new work marks McSweeney’s first exhibition here since the 1997 Galway Arts Festival. McSweeney’s rich, expressive and worked surfaces will grace Kennys from July 16th until August 5th

Jay Murphy Welcome to Galway Mr.Grosz One of Ireland’s best-known artists Brian Bourke exhibits a series of drawings and mixed media portraits made during an intensive five-week residency in Galway Arts Centre. Bourke has exhibited in some of the most prestigious galleries throughout the world. A retrospective of his work was held during Galway Arts Festival in 1988. The landscape, people and events of Galway have provided the inspiration for much of Jay Murphy’s work over the past 25 years. The 2003 Macnas Halloween Parade based on the Mexican Day of the Dead is incorporated into a pastiche of George Grosz‚s apocalyptic cityscapes. This marks the first exhibition at Galway's newest gallery The Norman Villa Gallery, Salthill.

Graham Knuttel Jimmy Lawlor Retrospective I do not explain my work, rather my work explains me -Graham Knuttel Retrospective at the Bold Art Gallery is a colourful exhibition that reflects the artist’s life work in a variety of mediums including sculpture, tapestries and paintings

Jimmy Lawlor examines the Irish landscape through the prism of his surreal vision of rural Ireland, its people and folklore. His work is infused with irreverence for the hackneyed image of a rural idyll and reveals to us the honesty and simplicity of his environ-ment. Jimmy designed posters for Galway Arts Festival in 1994 and 1997.

Sinead Aldridge Cian Donnelly This show brings together the work of two Irish abstract painters. Sinead Aldridge is based in Sligo and her highly acclaimed work has been exhibited internationally. Her work is based around a language of touch and a sensitive, but expressive handling of colour. Cian Donnelly graduated with an MA in European Fine Art from Winchester School of Art in 2001. He has since then exhibited his form of Slice Painting internationally. He is based in Belfast and is Co-Director of Catalyst Arts. This is the first time Aldridge and Donnelly have shown together.

This group is hotly tipped for a big year in 2005. Rónán Ó Snodaigh of Kíla, has placed himself firmly at the cutting edge of Gaelic rhythmical poetry with his new collection; ‘Luascadán’. Ó Snodaigh delivers his work with the pulsating ferocity of a hundred African drummers and the guile of a Celtic mystic. Oíche den scoth i mBéarla agus i nGaeilge le blas láidir comhaimseartha. Tá aithne ar Rónán Ó Snodaigh le fada an lá as a chuid ceoil le Kíla, ach tá sé anois ag baint an-cháil amach chomh maith as a chuid filíochta.
