Dave Hedgepeth Adjunct Sailing Instructor

David Hedgepeth brings decades of maritime experience and a lifelong passion for sailing to his role as Adjunct Instructor in Sailing at Galveston College. A graduate of Texas A&M University, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation from the Texas Maritime Academy in 1980. Following graduation, Hedgepeth embarked on a 26-year career at sea, sailing on a wide variety of merchant ships around the world. He rose through the ranks and served as Master for 15 of those years. After coming ashore in 2006, he held leadership roles in the maritime industry, including serving as Global Fleet Director for one of the world’s largest marine construction companies, until he retired from full-time work in 2020.

Hedgepeth holds several professional credentials, including a USCG License as Master of SelfPropelled Vessels (Unlimited Tonnage, Oceans), a USCG Sail Endorsement (100 GRT, Oceans), a Train-the-Trainer certificate, and American Sailing Association (ASA) Instructor certifications for ASA 101, 103, 104, 106, and 114.

He has over 12 years of teaching experience, having taught USCG-approved courses at the Center for Marine Training and Safety (CMTS) between shipping assignments. Since 2018, he has also been an ASA-certified sailing instructor.

Hedgepeth has contributed significantly to the maritime industry beyond teaching. He helped develop internationally accepted Dynamic Positioning Operational Guidelines and was part of the industry consortium that created critical equipment and procedures in response to the Deepwater Horizon incident.

A lifelong sailor, Hedgepeth has been on the water since the age of 10 and continues to enjoy sharing his expertise with students. “I like sailing and enjoy teaching others,” he says. “It gives me a great reason to get out on a boat.”

In his free time, Hedgepeth gives back to his community through volunteer work with the Galveston County Food Bank and the Galveston Historical Foundation.

LEISURE & ENRICHMENT

As a life-long artist, Sandra Viser has worked in many genres and many techniques to be where she is today – a ceramicist. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree from The University of Texas at San Antonio, and has taken advanced coursework in fine arts at York College of Pennsylvania and The Glassell School of Art in Houston. While she has worked in oil painting, textiles, and printmaking, her true passion is working in clay. Her work has been exhibited in several events including Art Walk Galveston, the National Society of Artists Juried Show, and Galveston College Arts Faculty shows.

Viser has been a ceramics instructor at Galveston College since 2023. She finds delight in helping both newcomers who are just exploring art for the first time, and those who’ve been on their arts journey for a long time.

David Harmon Ceramics Instructor

I discovered my passion for clay in the fall of 1983 while attending Texas Tech University. I vividly remember watching someone expertly throwing clay on a potter’s wheel and thinking to myself, “I can do that!” That year, I enrolled in my first pottery class, and I’ve been captivated by the art ever since. I specialize in creating functional art that stands out in a world of mass-produced items.

In my classes, my goal is to impart an appreciation for the tactile nature of clay and its therapeutic qualities. I want my students to experience the joy of creating something lasting, learning the do’s and don’ts, and most importantly, having fun in the process. My roots run deep in Galveston; my family has been here for over a century. These connections to my heritage enrich my work and life.

I have been teaching yoga for 25 years in Galveston, usually at local gyms that offer yoga. I regularly attend yoga workshops with different local, national and worldwide instructors to learn their techniques on postures, how to demonstrate and make adjustments to those poses, and breathing techniques. My personal teaching style is to incorporate what I have learned from those different teachers and combine that knowledge into what works best for me and my students.

I have always taught classes that tend to have a wide range in students’ ages and abilities, so options are provided on how to simplify or create more of a challenge for each pose.

My goal as a yoga teacher is to teach each student at their current level and encourage to advancement if that is their wish. In my classes you will not learn the intellectual side of yoga, as I focus on the physical side of a yoga practice. My classes will include leg and arm balances; don’t worry - no handstands, floor poses or standing poses. No two classes will ever be the same.

Fun music, good energy and physical wellness is what you’ll get with my classes.
