2019 ANNUAL REPORT

2

The storage building on the Kemah property will ser ve as our temporar y office while we work to finish fundraising and build our forever home.

Dear Galveston Bay Foundation Friends, We chose “A Healthy Bay For All” for the cover of this year’s Annual Report because it is the vision Galveston Bay Foundation has been working towards since our beginning. As I look through this report, I am proud of what we have achieved together to support this vision. In 2019, our short-term efforts to protect the Bay included immediate and independent water monitoring during the ITC chemical tank fires. Our longer-term efforts of investing in habitat restoration, water protection and land conversation ensure the Bay remains resilient during such crises. We see a future Bay brimming with vitality, connected to people and contributing to the community in ever y possible way. With your help, Galveston Bay Foundation will continue to make great strides in achieving a healthy Bay for all. Our capital campaign to build a state-of-the-art headquarters and education facility in Kemah furthers this vision. Our future home will ser ve as a place where community visitors of all ages can access the Bay and learn about its value. We now have a glimpse of our future! Currently, we are operating from a storage building on the property that will ser ve as our temporar y office while we work to finish fundraising and build our forever home. We look for ward to sharing our continued progress with you. Thank you for all we have achieved together in 2019. We look for ward to an exciting future and accomplishing even more for Galveston Bay. Sincerely,

BOB STOKES President, Galveston Bay Foundation

EDUCATE Galveston Bay Foundation’s education programs get students outdoors through hands-on STEM curriculum.

7,429 students engaged, over half of whom are considered low-income, in 133 youth education events in classrooms and on the Bay

643 teachers provided with curricula and training on a variety of Galveston Bay topics during local and national professional development opportunities

“ It is difficult to become an activist for something to which you

have no connection. Galveston Bay Foundation’s education program opened a new world to my students. It provided them with the ability to learn about their environment and marine preservation through hands-on, real-world experience.” Sue Schepple, Wharton Dual Language Academy Teacher

“ I feel a great sense of pride when I get to see the tons of shells I collect every week being returned to the Bay to build reefs that help our Bay habitat thrive. Shannon Batte, Oyster Shell Recycling Assistant

In 2019, Galveston Bay Foundation made great strides in planning the Oyster Shell Recycling program expansion to Houston city limits. The inaugural Houston Oyster Festival will kick off the program expansion in April 2021. 8

RESTORE Galveston Bay Foundation’s restoration programs protect and restore the Bay’s natural resources.

9,877 new oysters raised from 223 oyster gardens and returned to Galveston Bay oyster reefs

262,000

pounds of oyster shells recycled from 6 partner restaurants. Utilized 34,000 pounds of recycled shell to construct 130 feet of oyster shell breakwaters in Trinity and West Bays

8,975

pounds of trash and recyclables and 7 tires removed from the Armand Bayou watershed during the River, Lakes, Bays ‘N Bayous Trash Bash® event and 149 abandoned crab traps from Trinity and East Bays during TPWD’s annual Abandoned Crab Trap Removal event 9

Galveston Bay Foundation’s water programs ensure Galveston Bay is fishable and swimmable.

100+ water quality samples collected and tested for VOC and PFAS chemicals in partnership with Texas A&M University and Environmental Defense Fund as part of emergency response to the ITC chemical tank fires. The research findings were published in Environmental Pollution journal.

191 rain barrels distributed at 5 community workshops, creating the potential to conserve over 169,000 gallons of water per year

“ We set out to document the

presence of PFAs that we feel like is conclusively tied to the impacts from the ITC fire. What the research doesn’t do, and what we think there needs to be more research on, is what health impacts might be caused because of this incident.

Bob Stokes, Galveston Bay Foundation President 10

ADVOCATE Galveston Bay Foundation’s advocacy programs work with policy and decision makers to protect the health and well-being of the Bay.

19 indicators in the 2019 Galveston Bay Report Card resulted in an overall grade of a “C” for Bay health and productivity

21 letters of concern or opposition submitted after review of 61 wetland permit applications for projects proposed to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers

“ It’s a reminder that the natural systems that support the Bay

actually have evolved to withstand extreme events and can adapt to extreme events as long as we let them and we don’t get in the way.” Lisa Gonzalez, President and CEO of Houston Advanced Research Center on the 2019 water quality Report Card grade

I thought planting marsh grass was really fun. It’s not something I have done before. Even if it doesn’t seem like planting a couple grasses makes a big impact, small actions within the community and the awareness it brings for the environment does make a big difference.

- Giselle Miralles, Junior at Clear Creek High School and Marsh Mania volunteer

“The saddest thing for a sailor to see is trash

or oil in the water, so the Galveston Bay Foundation mission to preserve and protect the Bay is huge for me. Changing stations were a big need and I am really proud of the work that was done.

- Kai Brown (right), Sea Scout in Ship 468 who completed his award-winning Eagle Scout project constructing changing stations for Galveston Bay Foundation youth education programs

of the reasons we keep volunteering “ One at Abandoned Crab Trap Removal over and over is to show our kids how easy it is to come out and do something that’s fun and gives back.

- Lanny Ripple, long-time Abandoned Crab Trap Removal volunteer

marsh grass today was particularly “Planting meaningful. This is my first time doing habitat restoration. We know that Galveston Bay is facing wetland deterioration and this problem is also occurring in my region of China. Galveston Bay Foundation did a great job organizing this event. There were a lot of people who came and I really loved it.

- Meng Jiang (second from right), Chinese Delegate and Marsh Mania volunteer

16

Meng created Yangtzee Finless Porpoise Association, an organization to help preserve finless porpoises in China.

2,677 volunteers donated a combined 11,732 hours to help preserve and protect the Bay

I want to reflect on the powerful, amazing work that volunteers have done, and continue to do, for Galveston Bay. Galveston Bay is one of the largest and most productive estuaries in the United States. The Bay faces many challenges such as loss of coastal habitat, reduction in wildlife populations and insufficient freshwater inflows. In order to increase public awareness about Galveston Bay and combat issues it faces, we developed and implemented hands-on volunteer events and programs. Marsh Mania, now our signature community-based restoration event, began in 1999 when Galveston Bay Foundation volunteers set a national record for the number of volunteers involved in a single-day marsh restoration event. Since then, more than 8,000 Galveston Bay Foundation volunteers have restored over 215 acres of marsh habitat in Galveston Bay. That is the equivalent of 165 football fields! Every year, thousands of individual volunteers and corporate groups help us complete marsh restoration projects, marine debris cleanup events, oyster reef restoration, land stewardship workdays, water quality monitoring, bottlenose dolphin research, environmental education and the list goes on. In 2019 alone, over 2,600 volunteers donated over 11,700 hours of their time to help the Bay. We could not succeed in preserving and enhancing Galveston Bay without our valued, hard-working and dedicated volunteers.

RECOGNITIONS Excellence in Ecological Restoration Award from the Texas Society for Ecological Restoration Education and Public Awareness recognition from Wise Awards (Houston-Galveston Area Council) for Galveston Bay Action Network

“ I remember the first time I went to

Galveston, right after having moved to Houston from London in 2014. I remember the wind in my face, the massive crawfish plate I was served, all that space in front of me, and the sense of freedom I felt. I felt at peace, and this sensation best defines my connection with the Bay. That’s why this year, I pledge to contribute towards 12 riders for Galveston Bay Foundation’s Bike Around the Bay.
