Thoughts From The West End Non-Profit organizations are strange things.

They usually operate with a specific mission statement or purpose, and while they most certainly can make profits, no one actually owns the organization. A board of directors broadly oversees the operation, while paid or volunteer administrators and employees carry out the nuts and bolts of the day-to-day operations.

If there are profits, no individuals in the organization gets to keep them. Rather the money is to be used to further the mission and life of the organization. Non-profits often benefit a local community, like many of the organizations that are featured in the pages of this issue.

Because of their specific mission and structure, an individual can give money to a non-profit and it is considered a tax deductible gift by the federal government. Many local “for profit” businesses often support many local non-profit organizations, because of the benefits that the community gets from the services and products that the non-profit offers, as well as possibly lowering the business’s tax burden. A “win, win” as they say.

In Gallup we have non-profits that build affordable housing, improve hospitals, teach and mentor children and adults, promote religion, provide safety and support for the abused, promote the arts, feed the hungry, rescue animals, build trails, promote culture, and so much more.

It isn’t that hard for anyone to find one thing that they care about and then help out to make that mission a reality.

In the words of Dr. Seuss, “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”

Thanks to the many Gallup area non-profits that most certainly care a whole awful lot.

Manuelito Navajo Children's Home MNCH HOW WE STARTED MNCH was started in 1959 as a preaching mission. The locals were not receptive to the gospel message, but the poverty of the area did lead to the missionaries being asked to care for children, so the official mission was changed to being a children’s home. At that time we were located near Manuelito Chapter. In 1961 LD Atchison purchased property at our current location in Williams Acres, just west of Gallup.

WHAT WE DO Our residents are children from the area, whose families are not able to care for them properly. There are many reasons why families place children with MNCH, none of which are the children’s fault. We also take kids from the tribal and state social services. Our primary focus is to provide these children with stability in their lifes.

Just knowing where they are going to sleep, that there is enough food, that the house is warm, and that they will be going to school and to church, helps a child feel so much more secure in life. We normally care for around 20 kids at a time in three cottages.

HOW YOU CAN HELP We really need financial help. We do not receive any funds from the government or tribal support. We are completely funded by individuals, businesses, and churches.

Any amount helps. One time or monthly donations are all greatly appreciated.

Your donation will be used to pay for electricity or propane, food, clothing, school, or some other cost related to caring for underprivileged children.

With a common passion to share this within the community, Avenues Early Childhood Services, Inc. (a 501 (c)(3)) was started by Priya Sudarsanam, a speech and language pathologist, and Regina Huffman, a licensed mental health counselor.

Avenues, Inc. offers high quality, culturally sensitive, and FREE home visiting services, from pregnancy until a child turns three. Our highly trained and experienced home visitors partner with families to promote healthy child development and confident parenting.

SWIF builds, refurbishes, and heats homes, and SWIF also provides emergency medical and material assistance; SWIF also provides grants to other human service organizations that provide immediate help.

SWIF aspires to provide educational and employment opportunities to assist willing individuals who wish to learn and work to improve their position in life.

A recent example of a SWIF grant project is the new Route 66 Skate Park which will be built on the east side of the Gallup Cultural Center. The construction of this park is scheduled to start sometime 12 March 2017

COMMUNITY AREA RESOURCE ENTERPRISE, INC. Gallup, New Mexico In 2004, 21 people froze to death.

Bob Roseborough, the new mayor, appointed a Blue Ribbon Commission to study and make recommendations to city council about addressing the problem of exposure deaths, homelessness, and its causes.

That Blue Ribbon Commission, chaired by the late Jim Harlan, focused on long term solutions to homelessness and poverty, which can be solved by affordable housing and support services. This commission became the first board of CARE 66.

The mission of CARE 66 is to create opportunities to end homelessness, and we do this by: • Providing support services and • Developing affordable housing.

access services as they need them. This model is called Housing First and has been found to be very effective for people living with addictions and/or behavioral health illnesses.

Let's be clear about one thing, homelessness is caused by the lack of affordable housing, not simply by drug or alcohol addiction. In other words, regardless of a person's income, they need to be able to find housing that costs them less than 30% of their income.

Most recently we have completed Hooghan Ho’zho in the downtown area. This affordable housing apartment complex has 44 units of which most are two-bedroom units.

Housing is considered affordable when a family spends less than 30% of its income on rent and utilities. The smaller the income the smaller the thirds.

A significant portion of families in McKinley County and Gallup are considered rent burdened because they spend more than 30% of their income on housing. This forces them to spend less on food and the other necessities of life.

Poverty prevents people from accessing opportunities for advancement, including education and good health.

Affordable housing helps alleviate the cost-of-life for a family and gives them access to opportunity. In addition, affordable housing done right is good for creating jobs, improving neighborhoods, increasing property values, and stabilizing communities.

We are governed by a Board of Directors representative of this community: Sr. Rose Marie Cecchini, Dennis Lorenzo, Fitz Sargent, John White, Frank Padilla, Emerson Toledo, and Martin Link.

We work closely with a variety of partners.

Our staff is dedicated and caring. Theresa Lee is our Chief Financial Officer.

The late Irvin Harrison got us a grant to start providing services. We rented the former Frances Adult Care Center building and began providing transitional housing in October 2005.

The thinking was that transitional housing, with intensive support services and job placement, would help people get out from their self-medication/addictive use of drugs and alcohol to become productive citizens.

And it really worked!

In 2012, we moved our shelter services to the Lexington Hotel. Renovations to the Lexington Hotel were completed in January, 2012. We rebuilt the structure from the inside out, with help from a variety of funders.

The largest funder was the Navajo Housing Authority.

This enabled us to provide shelter and permanent supportive housing to both men and women. The Lexington Hotel has 21 Single Resident Occupancy (SRO) units.

Cost effective solutions to homelessness have been developed, but it is very difficult to find the money, communities, and leadership to end homelessness. It is possible that in seeking to address these problems, we find that we have to give up long held perceptions and understandings of the problems.

Problems like homelessness are a conglomeration of poverty, drug abuse, mental illness, lack of hope and opportunity, and lack of access to services and affordable housing.

It takes a community to end homelessness, and we need you to help us in any way you can. It is not going to be easy or effortless, but it is possible with hard work to change the present for people who are homeless and the future of this community.

On March 16th we will celebrate our 12th birthday. Birthday gifts are welcome!

Gallup McKinley County School District (GMCS) is making local and national news by working to support and improve the health of GMCS students and the school community. As part of their effort, healthy items are featured on their menus and physical education and activity are emphasized. Their efforts are part of the HealthierUS School Challenge. GMCS received a Bronze level award for all 19 elementary schools in the district and is currently the only school district in New Mexico that received a HealthierUS School Challenge award for their superior performance.

The HealthierUS School Challenge (HUSSC) is a voluntary national certification initiative for schools participating in the National School Lunch Program. It supports the national Let’s Move campaign by recognizing schools that are creating healthier school environments through the promotion of good nutrition and physical activity. Sponsored by the USDA Food and Nutrition Service (FNS), the initiative encourages all schools to take a leadership role in helping students to make healthier eating and physical activity choices that will last a lifetime.

Schools and school districts such as GMCS, that champion the HUSSC, work hard to make changes to their school environment by 1) serving school lunches that reflect the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2) restricting the availability of foods and beverages at school to those that meet healthier guidelines of lower fat, added sugars, and

sodium, 3) offering nutrition education for students to learn to make healthy choices, and by 4) providing students with physical education and opportunities for students to be physically active during the school day.

The New Mexico Public Education Department (PED) would like to see all New Mexico schools receive a HUSSC award at any one of the four levels of superior performance: Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Gold Award of Distinction. Schools awarded receive a monetary incentive (Bronze $500, Silver $1000, Gold $1500, and Gold Award of Distinction $2000), an award plaque signed by a USDA official, a banner to display in their school, and their name listed on the national Team Nutrition website.

To qualify for an award, a school or school district must submit a formal application, meet USDA FNS required criteria and have and implement a current school wellness policy that meets New Mexico PED and USDA regulations. Schools receiving a HUSSC award commit to meeting the criteria throughout their four year certification period. Since 2012, GMCS has been committed to strengthening and implementing their district’s wellness policy, completing and submitting the HUSSC application, and supporting wellness efforts already in place. “It is an honor to receive the HUSSC Bronze award on behalf of all 19 elementary Schools in the Gallup McKinley County School District and SFE. It's amazing in such a short time that all 19 Elementary schools have not only met all federal and state requirements for the HUSSC award, but exceeded the requirements. We are very proud of the program that our SFE has established. It is exciting to see the students reap the benefits of healthier food choices and to see participation in the program explode district wide. We are excited to keep the growth going with all new types of cuisine offered throughout the upcoming year,” said Chef Neal Cunningham.

The HUSSC application process was led by Neal Cunningham, GMCS/SFE Food Service Director. Special recognition is also due to the team of school professionals, for their contributions and efforts in achieving a healthier school environment that encourages students to make healthy choices.

Think back to your childhood. How many of you had someone influential in your life that helped shape the person you are today? I would imagine most of you did. This might have been a neighbor, a friend, or a grandparent. Wouldn’t it be amazing if every child had the opportunity to have a mentor in their life?

Big Brothers Big Sisters provides this opportunity to youth all over the nation.

In McKinley County, over 200 youth were matched with positive, caring role models in 2016. But there are still hundreds of kids looking for a big brother or big sister to hang out with, to share stories with, and to bond with.

Mentors need to be at least 18 years of age and pass a background check. “Bigs” and “Littles” take part in one of two successful programs: In the community-based program, the pair spends an average of 4 to 6 hours per month together, doing activities as simple as reading books, playing a sport, going hiking, playing board games, or just sitting and talking. In our school-based program, Bigs go to the Little’s elementary school and spend one hour per week during the school year mentoring a child. They may shoot hoops, play games, work on a homework projects, or create arts and crafts.

In addition to hanging out on their own time, the organization provides free monthly activities that the matches can come to in order to gain a new experience, but also to meet and engage with other mentors and youth in the program.

of that young person. For that to happen though, we must raise funds to help pay for background checks, marketing, and recruitment tools, monthly casemanagement, and other necessary things to keep the organization operating in a healthy and productive manner.

Although we do receive funding from several sources, one of the main sources is through our local fundraising events. Each year we host two events where community members can participate.

The first event is “Bowl for Kids’ Sake”.

This event is unique to Big Brothers Big Sisters and brings in people of all ages and skill levels. The event involves friends, relatives, co-workers, etc. forming a team of five people. Each person is tasked with raising at least $100 or more for a team total of $500.

Teams register online and set up a team profile. Friends and family can donate to individuals through the online link or through directly giving money and signing a pledge sheet. Teams can also do group fundraising such as bake sales, garage sales, etc. On the day of the event, the teams sign in with the money they raised, get an event t-shirt, food, and then bowl for two hours.

Prizes are given throughout the event, and we also award the top individual fundraisers and top team fundraisers from each session with trophies and gift certificates from a variety of businesses.

This year’s event is on Saturday, April 30th, and the theme is Wild, Wild West, so we encourage all of our teams to come dressed accordingly.

This event has grown so much that we now have teams bowling at 2:00pm, 4:30pm, and 7:00pm. Teams have

also become very competitive in their fundraising, and last year our top team raised over $3000! This is such a fun, energetic, family-friendly event that we encourage all businesses, families, churches, and others to get involved!

Our second annual event is just as competitive but speaks to a specific crowd, Golfers!

Our “Golf for Kids” tournament is a 4-person scramble and offers breakfast, a steak lunch, an enjoyable goody bag and beautiful prizes for top teams.

In addition, our tournament has a raffle that includes some worthwhile prizes! The tournament has grown in enthusiasm and last year hosted 120 golfers.

If you enjoy the sport, need to get outside, or just want to support a worthwhile cause, you are welcome to be a part of this tournament. It is held every year in August.

Lastly, we have an amazing board that is made up of local business men and women who want to see children and youth succeed. Currently, our board consists of Yavon Devlin, Wonda Johnson, Jennifer Lee, Dolores Martinez, Kevin Menapace, Chee Montano, Liz Sanchez, Jason Sanchez, Gilbert Torres, and Mario Yazzie.

Stories from Yoga History The Father of Modern Yoga: Krishnamacharya For those curious about the positions, movements, and philosophies of yoga, this article series will explain where they came from. This is the second chapter on yoga history for Gallup Journey readers, following my January issue telling of the similarities between the Navajo and Hindu cultures.

This is the story about modern yoga’s most important man. He lived from 1888 – 1989 in India. His name was Sri Tirumalai Krishnamacharya. He is famed for many things. He helped change yoga’s spiritual practices into fitness practices, and he trained the four most influential teachers in the modern age: his son, T. K. V. Desikachar, his brother-in-law, B.K.S. Iyengar, his devotee, Krishna Pattabhi Jois, and his Latvian friend, Indra Devi, a woman of rare intelligence and skill who became an icon of what is best in yoga for people all over the world.

These teachers are mainly responsible for the spread of modern yoga. So, whatever style you practice, its lineage can probably be traced back to Krishnamacharya. That’s why we call him, “The Father of Modern Yoga”.

But if we track down his title and birth name, “Sri Tirumalai Krishnamacharya,” it helps explain who he was and why he affected history to the extent he did.

His title, “Sri”, means, “Your Excellency”, “beautiful”, or “holy”. Though this prefix can be thrown around casually in India, in his historical moment, Krishnamacharya earned it for his great learning. It is reported that he started studying yoga postures and one of yoga’s most important books, the Yoga Sutras, when he was only five.

We’re told his formal learning went for 30 more years, only ending after he spent seven years training with a yogi in a cave. An exceptional career in book-learning shaped 24 March 2017

him before that cave. He earned heaps of scholarly honors.

By the time he was 38, he’d collected at least five degrees called shastris (which are comparable to PhDs), bested many fellow scholars in debate, and knew yoga and important details of Hindu rituals in detail. This inspired reverence. The wisest of men sought him out when their competing claims needed to be resolved.

Following “Sri”, came his first name “Tirumalai”, which indicates he came from a distinguished family (In India names correspond to birthplaces). His father was a respected instructor of India’s oldest texts, the Vedas, and his grandfather was the pontiff (a pope-like figure) of a great monastery called the Parakala Math, which provided religious counsel for the royalty of Mysore, an important kingdom in Southwest

India. Think of stories from Europe’s middleages where wizards advise kings. Leaders of countries, just like everyday people, regularly sought counsel from those who understand the transcendent. Krishnamacharya’s family was known for playing that role, just like we’d think of the Barrymores as actors, the Leakeys as archaeologists, or the Kennedys as politicians.

“Tirumalai” comes from “Tirumala”, the name of an important town where the famous Tirumala Sri Venkateswara Temple lies. Tirumala means “Holy Hill”.

Tirumala Sri Venkateswara is a temple of the Indian Sustainer God, Vishnu. It is meaningful to know that Krishnamacharya was a Vaishnavite, a member of a Vishnuworshipping caste. His piety, and the orthodox rituals he practiced daily without fail, anchored him throughout his life. It is

miraculous. Several times he stopped his heart onstage while Western physicians watched.

He learned such skills during those seven years in a cave! (… or so the story goes). Our best guess is that Krishnamacharya’s cavelearning ended in 1925 during his 38th year.

He then chose a life with a wife and kids. (He did this with gusto, too. He fathered three boys and three girls!) His married life ended 33 years of studies.

The dates are debated, but it was probably in 1918 that he took off for Tibet (or some other location – scholars haggle this, too!) to join the renowned Brahmamohana Brahmachari on a Himalayan mountain called Kailash (said to be the Abode of the King of Yogis, Shiva). Brahmachari was a terrifically-trained adept who knew yoga therapy and the Yoga Sutras. Among other methods, he tested his young student by making him practice in the snow, on a full belly, held down by weights. Legend says Brahmachari was 230 years old. Not only were the above-mentioned superstars his students (Desikachar, Iyengar, Jois, and Devi) but the secondarily-famed world teachers, B.N.S. Iyengar, Srivatsa Ramaswami, A.G. Mohan, and Mark Whitwell, were too.

Despite Krishnamacharya’s fame as a teacher of physical yoga, Krishnamacharya teaching pranayama Yvonne Millerand we know from his

writings that he believed yoga was good only when suffused by this kind of godly worship, called bhakti. He didn’t believe that people had to worship Krishna, or even his god, Narayana (in some cases an alternate name and in some cases a whole alternate form of Vishnu). Though Krishnamacharya was willing to teach yoga to atheists, he did believe that worship of some god was needed to make yoga powerful. He says this in the early part of his book, the “Secret of Yoga” (the Yoga Rahasya).

Krishnamacharya lived to be 100. Living to be 100 was thought to be special validation for yogis.

Indian myth says a group of long-lived animals, men, and women appeared in this world as forms of Vishnu (just as there are multiple forms of many Hindu deities).

These divergent forms of one god are “incarnations” or “avatars”.

Like Krishnamacharya’s Narayana, Krishna is a form of Vishnu, too: one was said to have lived 125 years.

Krishnamacharya lived to be 100.

Living to be 100 was thought to be special validation for yogis.

Born in 1888, his immediate colleagues were a group of talented men who transformed Hatha Yoga for the modern age, including Swami Sivananda (1887 – 1963), Sri Yogendra (1897 – 1989), and Swami Kuvalayananda (1883 – 1966). They preceded the famous cadre of students named above.

In the 1920s and 1930s, Krishnamacharya and his contemporaries placed the initial foundation for the yoga practice forms we do now. (In our next chapter, we’ll tell how his student, Iyengar, would do the most to take that work further still).

On November 18, 1988, Krishnamcharya’s 100th birthday, a great festival was thrown at the institution his son, Desikachar, had created to disseminate his dad’s teachings (called The Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram; it stands in the great city of learning, Chennai). Krishnamacharya’s student, the Latvian Indra Devi (who would live to be 102), came to the celebration, as did many scholars who paid homage to Krishnamacharya in a terrific set of long rituals. In those rites, Krishnamacharya reeled off scriptural passages from the top of his head. His heroic hundred years did not fail him. The stature and wisdom he gave to yoga, and the care with which he launched himself into the world for over a century, still lends a bold tinge to the practices we do today.

Start A Non-Profit?

According to Independent Sector, New Mexico has over 9,000 none-profit organizations.

Employing approximately 48,000 people; non-profits generate more than $6 billion in revenues in New Mexico. People start non-profit businesses for a variety of purposes.

Maybe you want to help lowincome people get enough food or treat addictions. Maybe you have a desire to help youth get a college education or your church wants to start a daycare. The underlying goal of all non-profits is to fill a need in the community through charitable means and not to extract a profit from their work.

Starting a non-profit is not difficult; keeping it viable is another story. Because non-profits mainly rely on charitable donations and grants, it is critical to make sure there is a need for your business. Most non-profits are started because a group of people want to improve some facet of life for their fellow humans or animals. Lofty goals are achievable, but first must be grounded in solid research. Look around your community and see if there are other organizations addressing the same issue.

You don’t want to compete for limited funds to duplicate services. Maybe an existing organization just needs additional help or resources if a need isn’t being fully met.

Business plans are important. Just because you and your colleagues are

passionate about the need for your nonprofit doesn’t mean anyone else will be.

What will the cost be to start up the business? How much will you need to sustain the operating costs going forward?

To be able to attract and maintain funders you will need to show the impact your nonprofit has on the community. Measurable outcomes will be needed to demonstrate impact. Also consider who might be your partners in the community. Who can you work with to achieve your goals?

Building a solid foundation for your organization is critical. Don’t jump to providing services without making sure all the pieces are in place. Every non-profit needs a board of directors. Who will be on the board of directors? Expand your thinking beyond just the people who have passion for the issue. What kinds of skills do you need to bring to the table? Do you need someone who is a grant writer, who can fundraise, a lawyer, doctor, veterinarian, teacher? Having diversity on your board will help bring perspectives and skills that you will need to build capacity and sustainability.

What will your organizational structure look like? Is your board a working board overseeing volunteers? Are you going to need to hire an executive director and staff ?

Sometimes organizations start out with just a board and volunteers and they hire staff as the organization grows. It is important to have the organizational structure well thought out before moving forward. You will need to determine board structure through your bylaws; which should always be reviewed by an attorney to ensure that they meet state and federal requirements. Having a clear plan to determine who is responsible for how organizational decisions and work gets done is absolutely critical.

Hiring staff and recruiting volunteers is serious business. You need to think carefully about what types of skills are needed for the job and develop job descriptions that reflect those skills. There should be job descriptions for both hired staff and volunteers. Not only are job descriptions important, developing policies and procedures so that staff and volunteers know how to do their tasks within parameters set by the board is important. Setting a code of conduct and ethics for staff and volunteers to guide their interactions with consumers, partners, and the general public will save your organization from potentially serious trouble. Managing people is often the most difficult part of any

business and having a good system in place for management will help make the entire operation run smoother and more efficiently.

Once you have completed your bylaws, you can start the paperwork needed to incorporate your non-profit. The main benefit to becoming a non-profit is the exemption from having to pay taxes.

Articles of Incorporation will need to be filed with the state and the federal Internal Revenue Service. A good source of information on how to do this can be found at https://www.nolo.com/ legal-encyclopedia/forming-nonprofitcorporation-new-mexico-36078.html. The Articles of Incorporation will require you

to have bylaws, a board of directors, and a clearly stated mission. Once your articles have been approved, then you can apply to the state and IRS for your tax exemption.

Lastly, make sure you understand state and IRS reporting requirements and any rules and regulations around fundraising.

Starting and managing a non-profit business definitely requires forethought and planning. There are several resources such as www.councilofnonprofits.org that are very helpful. In your journey, always remember that doing work that you are passionate about and making a positive impact in your community is well worth the time and effort.

The Quintana family is helping bring more people downtown, by filling a building that has been vacant for the last ten years.

Ryan Quintana owned and operated Quintana’s Music from 1997 until 2010 and then went on the road with his father Art Quintana, a well-known Native American jewelry dealer, to help him with his wholesale jewelry business. Ryan went to the Music Institute of Technology and graduated with accolades. He also won the award for best Blues composition in the New Mexico Music awards in 2000.

Rhonda Quintana owned and operated The Hive Entertainment from 2004 to 2015 in Scottsdale, AZ, where she managed bands, produced live shows throughout Arizona and New Mexico, as well as booked tours. Both Ryan and Rhonda are a wealth of information when it comes to the music industry.

CONCUSSION Concussion has been a relevant news topic lately, especially with the new Will Smith movie, Concussion, just hitting the big screen. Concussion can be described as any trauma, external or internal, direct or indirect, to the face, neck, or head. It may or may not be accompanied by symptoms such as loss of consciousness, amnesia, headache, dizziness, nausea, etc.

For some time, we believed that we could grade concussion determined by loss of consciousness, amnesia, headache, or altered orientation at the time of injury.

New research suggests concussion severity can only be determined after the individual is free of all concussive symptoms. Also, these clinical symptoms are not very reliable predictors in outcome, prognosis, or return to play.

Our goal as healthcare providers is to prevent further injury and assist in symptom management. Second Impact Syndrome is a very serious injury that can occur when an individual returns to play before they are ready and sustains another head injury. This can lead to increased swelling or brain herniation with a higher than desirable morbidity and mortality rate (100% and 50%, respectively). Symptoms management can include vestibular, oculomotor, and balance treatment technique.

We also need to be aware of post-concussion symptoms such as: • Migraine and/or light sensitivity • Fatigue • Nausea • Difficulty sleeping • Vestibular symptoms • Difficulties in school/academia

So, how are we to know when a high school athlete’s symptoms are fully resolved, especially when, according to McCrea, M. and colleagues, only 47% of high school athletes report their concussion?

A relatively new term, Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, or CTE, also known as “punch drunk syndrome”, was determined around 2002, when an autopsy was performed on a lifelong football player who was demonstrating Alzheimer’s type behaviors. The pathology uncovered in the autopsy was found to be different than a brain with Alzheimer’s, however.

To prevent this phenomenon from affecting our younger athletes, in August 2015, Illinois Governor Rauner signed a Return to Play/Return to Learn bill (SB07 (Public Act 99-245)) that states school boards, from middle school up to high school, should abide by IHSA protocols for concussion management. This includes a 2-hour concussion training session for coaches, school nurses, trainers, and game officials and encourages concussion education for players, parents, and students. Because of this bill, a player should not be allowed back in play or school until evaluated by a physician. Also, it implements preseason neuro-cognitive testing for a baseline score for comparison to post concussion testing. This test is infinitely randomized for more reliable scores and prevents return to play/school too soon for the healing brain, even if reported to be “symptom free”.

This is especially important as an NFL athlete in 2010 was quoted as saying, “When it comes to concussion, don’t believe me when I tell you that I’m okay.” There is a stigma that comes with being injured, as if the player in question is not tough enough to endure returning to play. This “shake-it-off ” mentality needs to fade away when it comes to one’s brain, and hopefully it will as concussion is better understood.

Concussion management is becoming more stringent, and for good reason. Whether it is in the news, the field, or

the movie theatre, the severity of concussion is part of the conversation right now. Healthcare providers, teachers, parents, coaches, referees, and athletes need to become comfortable with reporting signs and symptoms of concussion. When we understand what to look for, we can all play a role in protecting our young athletes.

It is no exaggeration to say there are millions of “Squash Blossom” necklaces in the world. Necklaces carrying this name come in myriad sizes, materials, and designs.

A cave in Ethiopia may push the date back to 100,000 years. And that’s quite a long time. It also proves that at that date, humans were walking upright and worrying about how they looked. Two beads could be made from the same small coin, they argue. If that is true, how do we explain the coin necklaces seen in early photographs?

Last year, in response to these pointless and often pejorative arguments, I stupidly posted my own explanation of the inspiration of this popular necklace style. I had come across a boar-tusk necklace from New Guinea that had definite design similarities, even to a dangle between the arms of the pendant crescent. So how did this form reach the Southwest? Carried from New Guinea to Zuni by ancient,

My satirical post blew up in my face. There were people who wanted more information, others who wanted to argue (seriously), and one trader who informed me that the necklace pictured wasn’t “authentic”. Not a single person realized I was making fun.

I can’t skip discussing the najahe, popularly called the naja, because again, the folklore is extensive. The crescent is a universal and ancient symbol, probably because of its association with the waxing and waning moon. The crescent symbol is associated with a number of gods and goddesses of the ancient world, from Egypt to the Orient.

The rare Cheshire moon, named for the grinning cat in Alice, is an almost universally bad omen. The bowl-shaped moon appears in the winter and is known around here as the dry moon.

It is claimed that the ancient Arabs adapted the down-turned crescent as protection for draft animals against the evil eye. Actually, the Jews and Moslems both had a protection from evil eye, but it wasn’t the crescent, it was the hand. It is called the Hand of Fatima, or the Hamsa Hand. The symbol is usually shown as a hand with downturned fingers, which turns the palm, thumb, and little finger into a crescent shape. The eye centered in the palm sometimes represents the eye of God, and might be the origin of the dangle often found between the horns of the squash blossom necklace. Once the original meaning was lost it became just a design element.

So, while the naja is supposed to protect from evil eye, it is the less common version with hands on the points of the crescent that could protect the wearer. The pendant is mentioned in the Bible as appearing around the necks of camels.

Used on bridles, the symbol was carried from the Arabian world across North Africa and into Spain by the Moorish conquerors. When the newly liberated Spanish traveled to America, they took horses and horse gear with them. Not much of a stretch to have the Mexicans bring the symbol to the Southwest.

By the time it reached silver workers, it had almost certainly lost its symbolic meaning. It was simply a pleasing pendant to hang on necklaces of silver beads. There was a long gap between the adoption of the naja and the addition of “blossoms”.

also added to necklaces of small crosses. The double cross was more popular with Zunis because of its resemblance (it has been reported) to the dragonfly. Very few photos of Navajos show them wearing cross necklaces.

I have tried for years to pin down the first use of the name “squash blossom” without any luck. Apparently, the flower shape needed a local interpretation, and the squash was handy. From that point forward explanations bog down in slush. Is it really a depiction of the immature fruit of the pomegranate? They aren’t very common in the Americas, but Navajos may have seen the decorative buttons down the legs of Mexican dandies.

But there is nothing to prove those vaqueros had ever seen a pomegranate either.

That protuberance on the fruit originally protected the blossom. It is called the calyx and it spreads into six parts with sharp-pointed ends.

It has been argued that the necklace originally came from a small village in Mexico.

Another expert claims that Plains Indians were responsible for these designs – and so on. Disregarding that, how do collectors follow the evolution of the blossom? I find the most attractive version has short, thick petals that end in a ball of silver. The rare fivepetaled version is the closest match to actual squash flowers. But most jewelry features a four or three petaled blossom, and they are generally rounded on the ends.

It would be logical to expect that the blossoms crafted from heavier silver were the result of using hand hammered plate, which would make them earliest. But then some say that style of flower is a hallmark of Pueblo-made squashes.

Once again, there is no evidence that the early Indian smiths recognized that element as belonging to a plant at all. The Navajo word translates as “the bead that spreads out”. There is no Zuni word for this necklace except “string of beads”.

The most interesting explanation I have come across is in School Arts Magazine from March 1931. The long-time editor of that magazine was a great fan of Native art and often wrote on the subject, as well as printed special Indian Art issues. Pedro Lemos was an artist and writer as well as editor and often had a unique take on Navajo art. He believed the design was actually taken from the sunflower not the petals, but the stamens – the inner part of the flower. It is interesting, if not very persuasive.

Unfortunately, his interpretive drawing doesn’t look much like a squash blossom to me.

The Fleur de Lis is a rather common substitute for the flower element, but I’m sure few natives know its meaning in French or its association with French nobility. It is just a nice design that looks flower-like. Its ancient significance is – you guessed it – as a good luck symbol.

Alonzo Hustito was fond of the Fleur de Lis and most any necklace that used it is attributed to him. Apparently, it is a little known fact that Alonzo did not do any casting. His three-dimensional designs are made with two pieces of silver. The base, and a raised figure soldered to it. It looks cast. Once the Zunis got into inlay, that style of necklace lost any resemblance to either squash blossoms or najas. But the name has stuck and I suppose that I, and most everyone else, will go on calling it a squash.

I was heading to the store again, this time to purchase some towels and other paper products at the large mart in our town.

Again, the store was closed, the shelves empty – and it was the same at every store in every town I tried. But this time, I headed home without panic. I knew my shelves were lined with the pumpkin, beans, tomatoes, greens, and corn I preserved from my garden this last season – all organically grown with love and care, all waiting to feed my family for months, even if the stores never opened again. I just wasn’t sure what we’d use for toilet paper.

“CITIFIED” EXPECTATIONS In most of the places I’ve lived, I always had easy access to health-food stores, organic farmer’s markets, and even healthoriented chains like Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s. Then we moved to McKinley County – Culture Shock.

We found La Montaňita Co-op, where local growers provide what they could produce during our short growing season, but what about the rest of the year? What about other fruits and vegetables they didn’t grow?

I like my body, so I wasn’t about to start eating like seventy percent of Americans, whose diet of mainly processed foods is full of artificial additives, sugar, salt, and

nothing compared to the hundreds – thousands – of dollars lost to time off work, doctor bills, or losing a job to illness or disability.

Plus, did you know that La Montaňita Co-ops let EBT card users get “Double Up Food Bucks”? Purchase local organic New Mexico fruits and vegetables with an EBT card and each $1 is worth $2. Grocery stores can’t compete with that kind of bargain!

There are other pluses to buying organic, of course. In our four-corners area, we are exposed to a lot of cadmium, a known carcinogen. But food studies show the cadmium load is approximately half in the organic crops. That’s half the cancer risk.

DREAMS CAN BECOME REALITY These dreams scared me into realizing it was time to rely on ourselves. We put up a hoop house to extend the short growing season. We bought nothing but organic seeds to avoid growing genetically modified organisms (GMOs), which are laboratorydeveloped products originally designed to feed people in third-world countries.

Unfortunately, that cause got thwarted, and laboratories started churning out “designer” seeds without taking the time to discover their long-term effects. In some cases – in far too many cases – those effects turned out to be deadly.

Absolute evidence now confirms that GMOs destroy biodiversity, poison farmers, degrade world soils, pollute waterways, and devastate local economies. Glyphosate, for example, an herbicide used in almost all commercial farms to kill weeds and grasses that compete with crops, causes birth defects, cancer, and kidney disease.

Our fruits and vegetables are causing birth defects, cancer, and kidney disease! This can’t be good for us.

LET’S EXAMINE THE TRUTH What does all that mean for us, you and me, and our need to feed our families? It means that in real dollars and cents, the idea organic food is “just too expensive” is just plain wrong. Those couple of extra dollars spent at the checkout stand are

THE VALUE OF SUFFERING This is my 40th Easter in Gallup. I still remember my first. I had moved to Gallup to open a law practice with Tim Vidal.

Things were going well, and I left Gallup on the Wednesday before Easter to visit my sister and her children in Denver. That weekend our law office burned to the ground. I came back to files that were glued together, and no place to work. Soon we had a place to go and a telephone. As is

always true about the people of Gallup, I learned that total strangers had come help salvage what could be saved from the fire.

I could have left Gallup, but then I would have never met my wife Kitty, raised five children, bought a suburban,….

No one likes to suffer. Where did that word come from and could it please go back there and stay out of our lives? It comes from two Latin words – “sub” meaning “under” and “ferre” meaning “to bear”.

When you say you are undergoing suffering, you are saying the same thing twice. Most people blame God when bad things happen to them. Even people who don’t believe in God blame God for evil in the world. Man says, “How could a good and loving God allow this to happen?” Is that true?

More people suffered and died in the last century than all other centuries combined: the two World Wars, the Great Depression, Hitler, Stalin, ethnic cleansing, African genocide – the list goes on and on. We forget that in the Judeo-Christian tradition, God placed us here with free will. We get to choose good and evil. Guess what happens when man chooses evil. People suffer and many die. It turns out that most suffering is caused by man and not God. What about those natural disasters? No one asked for those calamities, and it seems that God could have prevented those events

that caused many people to suffer. When man builds houses in low lying areas because it is expedient, and the river overflows just like it has for centuries before we came, people die. It is difficult to blame that one on God. Global warming is caused by God, too. But some disasters are inexplicable. The answer to the dilemma is way above my pay grade – it is a mystery. When a child dies, it is a mystery as well; we may or may not understand someday why such a terrible thing happened in our lives. Sometimes we are given a clue, but not always on this earth.

Hopefully we will understand when (and in my case if ) we get to heaven.

You may say, “Where is this discussion going? I am getting depressed.” The way out of suffering is to look for hope. I am not talking about “Hope and Change” or “Let’s make America Great Again”. Christians believe that real hope comes from Jesus Christ. I don’t know about you, but I saw the movie The Passion of the Christ once. It was on Good Friday, and that was all I could handle. I don’t go to horror films either.

What was the result of all that suffering of that one Man? He saved the world.

When we think we have more than we can handle, we should look at a couple of modern day examples. A man grew up in a Communist country. He lost his mother when he was 9. By the age of 20, his father

and brother had also died. His entire family was gone, and he lived under the yolk of Communism. He kept his faith and trudged on through this trail of tears. By the time he was done, he had defeated Communism not only in his country but all of Eastern Europe. He had no army; he didn’t slaughter millions with weapons of mass destruction.

He brought a message of hope which resonated with the people, and real change occurred. His name was St. John Paul II. There was a woman who was the youngest of a large Jewish family in Germany. She was a very good student. She decided to become a Catholic as she grew older and joined a cloistered convent in Cologne, Germany.

She was later moved to Holland during the war. She was arrested by the Nazis there and sent to Auschwitz where she died in the gas chambers. She was one of the six million Protestants and Catholics who died at the hand of Adolph Hitler along with the six million Jews. Her name was Edith Stein, and now she is a saint. What did she say about suffering? “Whatever did not fit in with my plan did lie within the plan of God. I have an ever deeper and firmer belief that nothing is merely an accident when seen in the light of God, that my whole life down to the smallest details has been marked out for me in the plan of Divine Providence and has a completely coherent meaning in God’s

all-seeing eyes. And so, I am beginning to rejoice in the light of glory wherein this meaning will be unveiled to me.”

Most of us are not as strong as John Paul II or Edith Stein. We live our lives as best we can. God calls us to do more. I know a nearby priest who lives with constant pain.

He can barely walk. Yet he lives his vocation one day at a time and inspires many around him. I have never heard him complain of his condition. We all have friends who have died of cancer. I have one who is dying right now. It is hard to visit her or imagine her pain. I am not there all the time, but her other friends tell me she never complains.

The people who care for her say that she gives them strength. She still goes to her volunteer job in health care when she can.

We can do this; it is time to get off that couch. We can lift ourselves out of this world of sorrow and be an inspiration to those around us because of our suffering. We can take that loss which we do not completely understand and use it for the good to help those in need. It is not easy, but with God’s grace, it is possible.

– William Arthur Ward David Cuellar had no idea as a young Army soldier in Vietnam that he would one day be an advocate for his brothers in arms. Just out of Gallup High School, Dave spent three years (’67, ’68,’69) in the United States Army, part of that time he was fighting in Vietnam. Cuellar is not one to talk much about his experiences in ‘Nam; he does enjoy telling a good story about his time as a soldier, but it is the amusing stories he will share…not the tragedies of war. But that does not mean he cannot recall, he recalls all too vividly the constant horrors, the imminent fear of war; but he will tell you, “I was just doing my job!” He brought those memories-nightmaresback home to Gallup with him. The memories and the nightmares were part of his daily life, although he did not understand at the time that he was suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD); the term was actually not even recognized at that time.

Because Cuellar had learned to appreciate the structure of the military, he joined the Gallup Police Department after his return to Gallup. “I was with the GPD for 22 years, 10 months, four days and four hours; not that I was counting,” Dave quipped. He was a tough police officer in times of unrest during the early 1970s.

Dave worked as a patrol officer-sometimes on horseback, he did time as a detective, worked as a narcotics agent, a training officer, along with many other positions during his almost 23 years. With the memories of war constantly floating in his mind, the PTSD was exacerbated by what he saw on the streets of Gallup as a police officer.

In 2001, Dave Cuellar retired from the police department. It was about a year later when he was talking to a friend who was also a veteran, “Do you

have nightmares every night?” his friend asked. Cuellar replied to him, “Sure, doesn’t everyone?” His friend told him, NO! It was then that he realized he was not quite “normal”! His friend encouraged him to go to Veteran Affairs (the VA) and apply for disability. After meeting with the VA doctors, he was directed to participate in PTSD Group Therapy. Cuellar recognized that his mental strength was heightened by his experiences in the military and with the police force, but when the first moderator of the Group Therapy meeting asked, “What did you do over there?” Cuellar and another veteran left the session and went to Don Diego’s for coffee. They simply did not want to answer that question! They were written up because they were “not cooperating”. This therapy was assigned by the VA, and if they did not attend therapy, they could not receive benefits. “This was a nightmare of a whole new kind,” Dave sighed.

A group of four Vietnam Veterans did eventually receive disability benefits after following the massive trail of red tape and bureaucracy. That first coffee break at Don Diego’s Restaurant was the beginning of the group we now call Veterans Helping Veterans-Brothers in Arms. Cuellar and the other three veterans would meet at Don Diego’s for coffee and help each other file forms, then take trips to the Albuquerque VA offices or hospital and garner the much-deserved disability benefits. Cuellar was first designated with a 50% disability level, then with more toil, he received a 70% designation, and finally he received the 100% disability status. Dave and the other three men had been reading everything they could about the stressors of war and PTSD. They knew other veterans in Gallup and those four men began helping others with their claims. Their meeting place was always at Don Diego’s.

Cuellar states, “That group of four turned into 24, then grew to 60, and now we have 150 veterans who attend our every-other-Friday meetings at Don Diego’s. Archie Baca and his family have always been very gracious and supportive of our veteran’s

meetings! We are not just Vietnam Veterans; we are simply veterans from any realm of military service.”

Several different herbicides were used during the Vietnam and Korean wars, plus other areas during that era. The barrels had colored markers on them; there were six different color markers used for the six different defoliators. In some cases, they were called the Rainbow Agents: Orange, Purple, White, Green, Blue, and Pink. For the main herbicide used in Vietnam, the barrel marker was orange; thus, it was named Agent Orange. Agent Blue even had arsenic in it, which is a very deadly agent. One of our Gallup veterans was stationed in Labrador in Northern-most Canada and he is suffering from exposure to Agent Purple. In order to assist other veterans, Cuellar and the three other men learned all about the tragic effects of the Rainbow Agents; they learned more than they wanted to know about the effects of PTSD, loss of limbs, and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), etc. In the beginning, they did help with filing some claims with other veterans, but now they work more in the capacity of guiding veterans to the agency which can help the most.

Cuellar stated, “Of the group of 150 veterans who meet every other Friday, probably 90% of them have been designated with 100% disability. Once a veteran has been characterized with 70% disability, they are labeled as unemployable and will receive compensating benefits from the VA.” All of this knowledge and so much more has been absorbed by Cuellar and many other veterans.

They use this information to help their brothers and sisters find their way through the system.

“The purpose of our Friday meetings at Don Diego’s is simply to disseminate information about claims, events, and the needs of other veterans. We have had speakers talk about Alzheimer’s, Traumatic Brain Injuries, Cancer Treatments, Massage Therapy for diabetes sufferers; anything that might help a veteran,” Cuellar shared. “At our meetings, the sick call is a very important message to get out,” Cuellar

explained. “It is a way to share who is home-bound, who might be in a VA hospital, who might need some extra help. Our meetings are absolutely one-hour long, although, individuals might stay longer to visit.”

“Everything we do is out of the goodness of our hearts. It comes from the brotherhood and camaraderie of being a military veteran. We never charge for any assistance provided to our brothers or sisters of the military,” Cuellar states emphatically. “We get a few kind donations; plus we have some fund-raising events like the coveted T-Shirt sales for Run For The Wall each May. We use these funds to assist veterans in need.”

Metro Dispatch has their contact information, and if a call comes in from a veteran in need of assistance that is outside the realm of police help, Veterans Helping Veterans (VHV) is often contacted to supply fuel, a place to stay over-night, maybe purchase a tire, or even provide food for a beloved pet. Gallup does have a VA Clinic, but some of the veterans do not drive. VHV will provide transportation to doctor appointments locally and even to Albuquerque. Because of the strong brotherhood between veterans, often they will spend money from their own pocket to help another veteran.

Dave Cuellar has an amazing number of contacts within the realm of veteran’s assistance. If a veteran presents him/herself at the door of VHV and truly needs immediate help, Dave will whip out the required phone number from his all-important cell phone and get that person expedited for immediate help or treatment.

Dave Cuellar acts as Commander of the VHV Post and guides the group in all that they do, along with the “A-Team” or Executive Board of 15 VHV members.

Through the Department of Veterans’ Services, Tyrra Saavedra is a Veterans’ Services Officer who handles the claims of our military veterans. Tyrra is a Navy veteran herself and understands the needs of other veterans, the steps they must take to file their claims, the path through the myriad of forms, plus she has the empathy to work with her fellow veterans. Dave Cuellar and VHV work closely with Tyrra Saavedra. Gallup is very fortunate that Ms. Saavedra holds office hours every two weeks at the Southside Senior Center in Ford Canyon. This

office was provided by the City of Gallup to the State of New Mexico Veterans Department, and it should house a full-time Veterans’ Service Officer in the near future. To learn the schedule for Gallup office hours, you may contact Dave Cuellar.

VHV has participated in Job Fairs to assist veterans in finding suitable employment. 2017 Ford Expedition EL XLT EcoBoost With the return of $2 a gallon gas, full size SUVs have come back into favor. As I see it, there are three main contenders when it comes to 3 rows that can tow and bring along a decent amount of cargo: that's this review, Expedition EL, which

is the long version of the regular Expedition, the Yukon XL, the long version of the Yukon, and the Toyota Sequoia. The Toyota does not have as much space in the back behind the third row as these other two, but it still gets cross-shopped a lot, and more importantly, I've driven both the Sequoia and the Yukon XL so it gives me a great base upon which to compare this Ford Expedition EL. Ford has given its Expedition the addition of the EcoBoost 3.5 liter twin-turbocharged V6 powertrain. This new powertrain for the Expedition has given the Expedition EL some serious muscle. While its competition chooses to use naturally aspirated V8s, there's no doubt this V6 does the job equally well. Developing 365 horsepower, but more importantly 420 pound feet of torque at a very lowly 2000 RPM, the EcoBoost moves the Expedition around as if it's a child’s play toy. While the Yukon XL offers its 6.2 liter making 420 horsepower and 460 pound feet of torque, there is something about the way the EcoBoost delivers its power that is just altogether a different animal. The wave of torque that is delivered down so low from the twin turbochargers allows you to loaf along so easily, and with very little throttle input, produces big changes in acceleration for such a large SUV. The EcoBoost was also meant to promise better fuel

economy, as the twin turbochargers really only do their job when you put your foot down, allowing the 3.5 liter V6 to mill about as a smaller engine most the time. In practice though, the Expedition EL is still a large and heavy vehicle, meaning the turbo is working a lot. The lighter by a few hundred pounds, Yukon XL, uses a naturally aspirated V8 yet achieves slightly better fuel economy. The Expedition returns 15mpg city/ 19 mpg highway and 16 mpg combined. These would have been unheard of numbers for a vehicle this size 10 to 15 years ago; today you get over 400 pound feet of torque and almost 20 miles per gallon on the highway, pretty impressive. Combined with Ford's “maximum towing package” it allows the Exped EL to tow an impressive 9,100 lbs. Another advantage

here is that being twin-turbocharged, the powertrain is not as susceptible to high altitude thin air. This is very nice as we live at such a high elevation and when towing, particularly in the mountains, it makes this Expedition EL worth a closer look.

Ford chooses to use an independent rear suspension outback. While some people claim this isn't as good as a traditional solid-axle, it does have its advantages when it comes to packaging, allowing the Expedition EL to have an adultfriendly third row. The third row has a higher seat-level, which allows your knees to sit level or even slightly below your hips, and there is ample knee and toe room. At five foot eight inches I found myself to have about three to four inches of headroom available, meaning actual adults up to around 6 feet can sit back there comfortably.

Most importantly, behind the third row you have 42.6 cubic feet of cargo space. What this means in reality is simply that you can use the third row for your family, friends, or whoever you need to take with you, and also be able to take most of the things you need to go with them, anything from full size coolers or luggage, camping gear or sports gear, or a lot of groceries. I can't emphasize this enough, as my typical complaint with 3 row vehicles is they allow you to take 3 rows worth of people, but not 3 rows worth of stuff. The Expedition EL has you covered.

On the road the Expedition EL has very good composure. In fact one friend of mine commented that, “It didn't seem right that a vehicle this size should be able to handle like it does.” Full size SUVs have come a long way in terms of drivability and really do drive a lot like cars, with fairly direct steering and well-controlled body movements combined with quiet cruising and good ergonomics, making them much more usable day-to-day.

Although Ford has recently revealed the information and images on an all-new 2018 Expedition, by no means does that make the current Expedition EL somehow obsolete...in fact, this is likely the perfect time to get one! Now let's not be glassy-eyed here, at $53,000 as tested for the XLT model, which is essentially the base, these vehicles do not come cheap. The reality is when you examine the full size SUV segment, $50,000 is the price of admission. Something worth noting however, is that $50,000 in a full size SUV does not yield a luxury vehicle, and the XLT you see here is clear example. While I didn’t feel shorted, because you are buying a large and capable vehicle, there’s an absence of some expected items for the price, such as a smart key, dual zone climate control, a touchscreen infotainment system, and power seats for both the driver and passenger. All in all, the Expedition EL is a compelling package for the right buyer. If you need to move people, their stuff, and pull a trailer, it’s worth taking for a test drive.

The Business of a Non-Profit "A business that makes nothing but money is a poor kind of business." – Henry Ford

Non-Profits strive to make the world a better place for all of us. We are talking about organizations involved in social services, education, health, amateur athletics, the arts, and many more noble pursuits. This is a very different idea from traditional for-profit businesses that are more concerned with building monetary wealth for its owners. However, even though the two types of organizations will have very different missions, one thing they have in common are the books.

Keeping accurate and up-to-date books is very important for nonprofit organizations.

A nonprofit has been given a special taxexempt status by the Internal Revenue Service. However, that doesn’t mean you will not have to keep records. You have been given tax-exempt status on the products you sell or services you provide that are core to the mission. Some services and products that are not part of the mission might be taxed.

Just like for-profit businesses, the greatest assets of a nonprofit will be its employees. You will be responsible for paying employment taxes. That will include withholding taxes for the state, federal withholding, and social security. These are taxes that you will have to report monthly.

This is just the beginning of the complex non-profit accounting requirements.

Nonprofit bookkeeping can get very complex. You have to keep track of

contributions and donations. Instead of an Income Statement you will have to keep a Statement of Activities, as well as a Statement of Financial Position and a Statement of Cash Flows. Your organization will also be responsible for filing both federal and state yearend returns.

It is important to remember that even though you are called a nonprofit that money generation is crucial. You are going to need to bring in more money then it costs to run your mission. Just like any business, you are going to have expenses, times when money is

tight, and the desire to grow your services.

So, not only is your job going to be running the nonprofit, but you are also going to have to get really familiar with your books.

Of course you will be able to find software that will help make this record keeping easier. Also, depending on the size and complexity of your nonprofit organization, you might want to add a Certified Public Accountant that has experience dealing with your type of organization.

Tohatchi Area of Opportunity and Services, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, was established in 1975 as “A School for Me”, to meet a need that could not be met in the more traditional school settings. We are governed by a Board of Directors, who oversee the direction of TAOS. Since our doors opened, we have employed a multitude of staff following the Navajo Nation preference laws, and many employees have been with the company for over 25 years.

This consistency has helped the people we support secure emotional stability and feel comfort, knowing the people that support them understand and are there for them.

Now as a Community Based Service Provider, we provide support to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to live life independently in their own homes, at their jobs, and at community events. We are accredited by The Council on Quality and Leadership, whose driving philosophy is Person Centered services.

With this philosophy in mind, the current management team, who have come into place over the past two years, have rededicated themselves to helping the people we support accomplish even more than ever before. Soroptimist International of Gallup Geraldine Arviso, President

Geraldine Arviso grew up in a family which understood service and helping others. She looked up to her mother as her role model. Geraldine’s mother, Prissy Schanefelt was a member of Soroptimist and asked Geraldine to join. When asked what drew her to Soroptimist International, besides her mother’s prompting, Geraldine quickly offered, “I don’t want the world to be just about me. I want my daughters to see that we can make a difference in other people’s lives; that we need to expand outside our comfort

zone. There are women and girls who need help and need a vision, a goal, to challenge them to succeed.

Being a Soroptimist gives me the opportunity to help others, and being part of an International organization, gives me a broader perspective on the world and other women in the world.”

It’s all about family passing on the ethic of volunteerism. Geraldine’s mother, Prissy Schanefelt, was President of Gallup Soroptimists for several years. Her aunt is also a member. Arviso has two adult

daughters who have also been members at different times, and one served on the Board of Directors.

“It was fulfilling a goal that I would become the President of the Gallup Soroptimist group, and I have served in that capacity for the last five years.” That reign will conclude at the end of June 2017 when Jeri Begay becomes the new president. Jeri Begay is proud that her daughter has also joined the club. Geraldine says, “We pass on to our daughters the desire to help.”

As a small group of women who depend on their immediate families, friends, and other community members to volunteer and to assist in meeting their goals, Geraldine says with a big smile, “We have never been disappointed! We want to thank all the ‘Soropto-Men’; our husbands, and the local businesses, because through their generosity they have helped us reach our goals.” Geraldine emphasizes that it is totally a family affair, “My younger daughters volunteer at our events and bake cakes for our sales.

My husband helped at the first ‘Festival of Trees’ five years ago and continues to help every year.”

The first Soroptimist club was established in 1921 in Oakland, California. Soroptimist International of Gallup was established May 10, 1952. Margaret “Midge” Bolf, who celebrated her 90th birthday in 2016, was an active member for 47 years. The Gallup Soroptimist Club meets the second Tuesday of each month at noon at PeeWee’s Kitchen.

When Arviso was asked about her favorite accomplishment during her time as president, she immediately answered, “The Women of Distinction Event!” Through the years, The Soroptimist Club would recognize a “Woman of Distinction” from Gallup. The annual recognition photos hung in the halls of RMCH for many years, but eventually needed to be removed. Geraldine proudly states, “The Women of Distinction Event was one of the most personally meaningful projects that I managed.

I contacted each of the women who had received this honor. They were so touched that we still thought about them and wanted to honor them again by finding a permanent location for the plaques. I asked them to update their history; what they were currently doing. Many were still working and active and making a difference in the communities where they lived. It was humbling, and it was an honor contacting the women and hosting the event.” The Octavia Fellin Public Library co-hosted the event for Women’s History Month March 2014.

A plaque that hung near the photos reads: Soroptimist International of Gallup is a Professional Woman’s Organization dedicated to furthering education opportunities for women. An annual project of the organization is the Woman of Distinction Award which is given to an outstanding woman in the Gallup area who contributes to improving the quality of life for all citizens.

Soroptimist International of Gallup salutes these Women of Distinction and thanks them for their continued contributions to their community. Since Octavia Fellin was one of the ‘Women of Distinction’, the plaque was donated to the Octavia Fellin Public Library along with the award to Ms. Fellin.

The next two events which are close to Arviso’s heart are the Live Your Dream Education & Training Awards for Women and the Festival of Trees. These two events go hand-in-hand. The Festival of Trees opportunity came about five years ago. Rio West Mall was looking for someone to manage the event, and we decided to take it on. The event has been very successful through the support of our partner, Rio West Mall, and through the support of the local business community.

During the Christmas season, trees are donated and decorated by area businesses or groups, and tickets are sold to the public for a chance to win their favorite tree. The funds garnered from this event are then used as awards to assist women who provide the primary source of financial support for their families, and gives them the resources they need to improve education, skills, and employment prospects. These awards are presented at the Live Your Dream luncheon held in January each year. Geraldine humbly states, “It is such a rewarding feeling to know that our group is helping women in our community to Live Their Dreams.” To learn more visit: www.liveyourdream.org. This past January, we were able to award a total of $3,500 to three individual women.” The group also helps Battered Families Services by hosting a housewarming at their Annual Saturday of Service which occurs in March.

The month of March is Women’s History Month.

TINAJA RESTAURANT A Warm Seat At The Bar

By the door going into the kitchen, there’s a black-and-white photo of a Navajo cowboy riding a bronc – who sauntered in for breakfast one morning and told me a bit of his story. Look around you, and in other photos you’ll see the old, stone trading post in Ramah, or Spanish cowboys like Gilbert Aragon, and the “Ramah Hell Cats”, a local singing group from the 1940s.

That’s George behind the bar. He’s one of the owners, and if it’s stories you want, George is your man – from his early racecar days outside Chicago, to the history of the steam logging train that ran through the Zuni Mountains. George knows the story.

Serving up your breakfast, lunch, or dinner would be Vicki or Monica. More coffee?

How about some iced tea?

But the real wizard behind the curtain is Mary Ann; George’s wife and head cook, who sometimes steps out of the kitchen if it isn’t real busy, and she bakes those little cookies on the bar.

Welcome to Tinaja, the big, red-roofed, barn-looking building on Highway 53 that has been a restaurant since the 1960s. It became a bar for awhile – with a drive-up liquor window and even a dance floor. Only now it serves up coffee and some of the best red and green chile this side of Tucumcari.

Green Chile burgers, oh, yeah, and that Vanderwagen Nightmare? It’s two, openfaced burgers, with lettuce, pickle, tomato, and cheese, “yes, lotsa cheese”.

Are you hungry for breakfast? Then, Huevos Rancheros of course. “Red, green, or Christmas” – make your choice. Or perhaps you’d like something sweeter, like Mary Ann’s French toast – dusted with powdered sugar – just in case you need a little extra ski-power to go with your syrupy butter and coffee.

Warm yourself by the fire, or admire the Native jewelry and crafts behind the bar that are for sale. Make yourself at home. You’re in good company!

Mexico’s reservations and local landmarks, painted on a road map that looks like it came out of Google Earth. It was handpainted, however, by a bartender who worked at the restaurant in 1975, Mary Holmes, and it was even featured in a French movie about Route 66.

Like the rock tinajas that fill up after the rains, you’ll be full too if you eat those Chile Cheese Fries – just once.
