ABOUT DIGITAL PROGRAMS

The Gallo Center has adopted the use of digital programs meant to be viewed on cell phones or other computer devices. This change has important public health, environmental and economic benefits: reducing close contacts between patrons and ushers, cutting our use of paper, and eliminating substantial printing costs. View the program only before shows begin or during intermissions. Please be considerate of other patrons and artists on stage by not viewing it during performances. Patrons who do not observe this courtesy and create distractions may be asked to leave. Thank you!

WHY YOUR SUPPORT MATTERS

The Gallo Center for the Arts is a non-profit performing arts center with a deep commitment to enriching the people and communities of California’s vast San Joaquin Valley. From the scintillating performances of its wonderful resident companies, to the great variety of world-class entertainment presented by the Center each season, to robust arts education programs for the region’s youth, this is where the magic happens.

From the beginning, the Center’s mission has been clearly defined: to provide an inspirational civic gathering place where regional, national, and international cultural activities illuminate, educate, and entertain. Since revenue from ticket sales and facility rentals only covers a portion of the costs associated with fulfilling this mission, the Center is dependent on the generous annual financial support from donors and program sponsors within our community.

GENERAL INFORMATION

The mission of the Gallo Center for the Arts is to enrich the quality of life in the San Joaquin Valley by providing an inspirational civic gathering place where regional, national and international cultural activities illuminate, educate and entertain. The Gallo Center for the Arts celebrates the diversity of the San Joaquin Valley by offering an array of affordable cultural opportunities designed to appeal, and be accessible, to all.

The Center opened in September, 2007 and consists of the 440-seat Foster Family Theater, the 1,248-seat Mary Stuart Rogers Theater, the Marie Damrell Gallo Grand Lobby and a plaza serving both theaters, and the Modesto Rotary Music Garden.

As a regional non-profit performing arts center, the Gallo Center for the Arts presents internationally recognized touring artists in all disciplines, and also is home to four resident companies: Central West Ballet, Modesto Performing Arts, Modesto Symphony Orchestra and Opera Modesto. The Gallo Center for the Arts is a unique public/private partnership. Construction was funded jointly by the County of Stanislaus, which owns the facility, and contributions from more than 4,000 individuals and businesses given to a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization which today operates the Center.

Part of the romance of Mariachi music is that all things are possible. The humor, the heartache and even the bittersweet, inspire us to a world where we live out our dreams. In that same way, much of the excitement of Jose Hernandez’ Mariachi Sol de Mexico® is that all things mariachi are possible. While his family tree is rooted in six generations of Mariachi musicians that hail from La Sierra del Tigre region of Jalisco, Jose built on that foundation to grow mariachi music in new territories, musical genres, and in the hearts of new audiences.

Unrivaled and uninhibited, the impact of Jose Hernandez and his Sol de Mexico® on mariachi and all music is undeniable. After forming Mariachi Sol de Mexico® in 1981, Jose’s charismatic arrangements and first class musical direction led the group to instant and lasting success: playing in sold out halls from Madison Square Garden to Beijing, China and Pyongyang, North Korea. Known as one of the worlds premiere Mariachi groups, they gained the attention of the White House and have been invited to play for 5 US Presidents from Ronald Reagan to Barack Obama.

From the beginning, Mariachi Sol de Mexico de Jose Hernandez made their mark through Hernandez’s innovative arrangements and fusion of different styles of music. Their ability to blend genres seamlessly is evidenced in their cohesive collaboration with symphonies throughout the United States.

Maestro Hernandez’s symphonic arrangements and orchestrations have led them to sharing the stage with symphony orchestras such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Diego Symphony, San Francisco Symphony, Jalisco Symphony and and with The City of Prague Philharmonic.

Musical magic was captured in their 25th anniversary symphonic album, which led to the first ever Mariachi with Symphony Grammy nomination! Indeed, the theatrical aspect of Sol de Mexico’s performances has been an attraction to Hollywood for soundtracks, where they have provided music since the 198O’s.Their work can be heard in films such as Old Gringo, American Me, Rango, Glory Road, Sea Biscuit, Don Juan de Marco, and many more.

The versatility of Sol de Mexico® to expand to new audiences has led to fabulous and unexpected collaborations with legacy artists such as The Beach Boys and Willie Nelson. Within the world of Latin music, Sol de Mexico® has played alongside stars such as Vicente Fernandez, Juan Gabriel, Selena, Linda Ronstadt, Jose Feliciano and a record-breaking concert tour with Luis Miguel.

Jose Hernandez has now been nominated for a total of twelve Grammy awards both Latin and American, between both of his groups, he has also been nominated and recognized as producer by the academy. But more than awards and credits, it is the passion and love of the mariachi tradition that Mariachi Sol de Mexico® upholds. When they are not playing for heads of state or global audiences, they can be

seen bringing the love of Mariachi at their new home in Tustin, California “Casa Del Sol Cocina Mexicana’

Outside of dazzling audiences, some may say their most important work is done through the Mariachi Heritage Society. Under the direction of Maestro Hernandez, a younger generation of musicians are being raised up with the skill and passion that has marked Mariachi Sol de Mexico®.
