CELEBRATING 30 YEARS WITH A BRAND NEW WORK!

FOR CRYING OUT LOUD

16 DANCERS. ONE MOVING ACT. CHOREOGRAPHED BY DWIGHT RHODEN

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 2025, 7 PM

$42 - $87

As part of its 30th anniversary celebration, Complexions Contemporary Ballet is appearing at the Gallo Center for a second consecutive season—and introducing a new work, For Crying Out Loud , featuring the music of U2!

Using the raw and unfiltered music of “Songs of Surrender,” U2’s latest release, choreographer and Complexions co-founder Dwight Rhoden brings the vibrancy of the stories told by the music and lyrics into a landscape of expression— drawing on the grit and honesty of these iconic songs stripped down to their acoustic best. For Crying Out Loud is the second act of this Complexions performance, following a mixed repertory first act comprised of pieces representative of the company’s 30-year history.

Rhoden and the legendary Desmond Richardson, both former dancers with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, founded the company in 1994. They brought a singular and somewhat shocking approach to reinventing dance through a groundbreaking mix of methods, styles and cultures.

FREE BALCONY TALK!

This performance features a pre-show Balcony Talk that is free to ticket holders. Central West Ballet artistic director René Daveluy and a member of Complexions Contemporary Ballet will discuss the company and its history and mission. The talk begins one hour prior to show time.

In her November 20, 2024 article for Dance Magazine about the 30th anniversary, Jennifer Heimlich observed: “[in 1994], the idea of having dancers of different genres, backgrounds, and body types perform together was revolutionary. The ballet and modern worlds of the 1990s were still very much divided, with ballet considered the top of the hierarchy. “Our message all along has always been about unity, bringing seemingly different things together and watching them fly,” Rhoden says. By setting the same highoctane movement on dancers from American Ballet Theatre, Dance Theatre of Harlem, and Ailey—and leaning into the individuality of each artist rather than trying to flatten them into sameness—Complexions demonstrated that virtuosity isn’t limited to any one genre.”

Today, Complexions represents one of the most recognized, diverse, inclusive and respected performing arts brands. Having presented an entirely new and exciting vision of human movement on five continents, to more than 20 million television viewers and to well over 300,000 people in live audiences, Complexions is poised to continue its mission to bring unity to the world one dance at a time.

“THEATRICAL MAGIC.”
“ONE OF THE MOST REMARKABLE SHOWS IN MUSICAL THEATRE HISTORY.”

COMING TO THE GALLO CENTER FOR TWO NIGHTS ONLY!

TUESDAY & WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 18 & 19, 2025, 7 PM

$62 - $137

PREMIER PARTNER: PRESENTED BY:

Declared “one of the most remarkable shows in musical theater history” by The Washington Post , DEAR EVAN HANSEN is the first musical to take a groundbreaking look — from the point of view of both the parents and young people — at our complex, interconnected, and social media-filled lives.

Evan Hansen is a high school student who always feels like he’s on the outside looking in. Evan finally gets what so many of us are searching for—the chance to finally fit in. What follows is a poignant, funny, and powerful musical about how even though it can be hard, we can find each other—and ourselves—along the way.

Including some of the most iconic musical theatre songs from th e last decade, including “You Will Be Found,” “Waving Through A Window,” and “For Forever,” DEAR EVAN HANSEN features an uplifting score by the Emmy®, Tony ®, Grammy®, and Oscar® winning team behind The Greatest Showman , La La Land , and “Only Murders in the Building” Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, and a book by Tony Awardwinner Steven Levenson.

DEAR EVAN HANSEN is recommended for ages 12 and up and contains adult themes, including discussions of suicide.

For the last 32 years, The Peking Acrobats have redefined audience perceptions of Chinese acrobatics. They perform daring maneuvers atop a precarious pagoda of chairs and display their technical prowess at such arts as trick-cycling, precision tumbling, juggling, somersaulting, and gymnastics. They push the limits of human ability, defying gravity with amazing displays of contortion, flexibility, and control. Traditional, time-honored Chinese music accompanies the high-tech special effects and awe-inspiring acrobatic feats, creating an exuberant entertainment event with the festive pageantry of a Chinese carnival.
