There are so many mixed messages out there, first we’re told to be strong and independent, never relying on anyone, and then we’re told that two heads are better than one. Noah certainly made the case for two being the best and the Spice Girls did waffle on about two becoming one so it’s probably safe to say that, generally, we should be ok on our own but we’re most likely going to be “better” in a partnership.

Sounds ridiculous doesn’t it? Like most things there is no “one size fits all” but, if you are feeling in any way insecure about being romantically single or not having a business partner then it’s probably best to just skim on through this. We should stress though, there is absolutely no need to feel like a failure here, but please try and get the single status updated before it becomes really embarrassing. As long as you’re not single or alone in your business you will be safe to read this “partnership” issue of Gallery.

So what do partners really bring to the table? Sure, you can share stuff, offer support, have each other’s backs but crucially, you have someone else to blame if things go bad. Partners are also really useful if you want to do things like go to the 10th CAMRA Isle of Man Beer and Cider Festival on the 6-8th April or experience TT 2023 hospitality with a free bar, because if you didn’t have that loving partner to baby-sit/pick you up or whatever, then you would never be able to get there and have fun without your partner.

If you do decide to go it alone then you should know that statistically you might not live as long but on a brighter note, you will be able to choose what you want to eat and what you want to watch on TV, so, you know, it’s not all bad. You will also be able to have the whole bed to yourself and wear what you want without judgement and you’ll never have to fight over who reads Gallery first!

The Isle of Man fell silent on Friday 24th February to mark one year since Russia invaded Ukraine. Chief Minister Alfred Cannan said “the Island would continue to play its part, however small, in supporting the people of Ukraine.”

Budget 2023: Treasury Minister Alex Allinson outlined his financial plan to Tynwald, allocating a total of £1.2bn of government spending. That equates to £15,243 per person, a rise of £1,199.

The income tax personal allowance will remain at £14,500 for a resident individual and £29,000 for a jointly assessed couple. For higher earners, the personal allowance will be tapered and reduced by £1 for every £2 that a person’s total income is above £100,000 (£200,000 for jointly assessed couples). This means if a person’s total income is £129,000 (£258,000 for jointly assessed couples) or above their personal allowance will be zero.

A collection of commemorative Isle of Man coins celebrating the coronation of King Charles III are up for grabs. The 50p pieces will be released in early March ahead of the coronation ceremony on 6 May.

Unemployment rate rises in the Isle of Man. The latest labour market report shows 297 people were registered as unemployed in January 2023. A small increase or 5 people from December 2022.

Campers will not be able to stay overnight at the Sulby Claddagh during the 5-month 2023 season, whilst the condemned toilet block is demolished, and a consultation is carried out.

KELPROPERTIES (IOM) Ltd SUPPORTS REBECCA HOUSE CHILDREN’S HOSPICE WITH £100,000 DONATION

Rebecca House last year celebrated its 15th anniversary, a significant milestone as it continues to provide vital respite care, therapeutic support and end of life care for children on Island with life limiting illnesses. This care extends not just to the children but also to their family members and close carers, often over many years. For many of the families in our community this is a lifeline service.

The donation by Kelproperties is not only generous but fortuitously comes at a time when Hospice Isle of Man is having to closely monitor and navigate a number of financial challenges. The funds will fully cover the costs of three dedicated nursing team members within Rebecca House for a period of one year. Rebecca House is almost entirely funded by charitable income as Hospice continues to negotiate sustainable funding support from Government.

John Knight, the new Chief Executive of Hospice Isle of Man, said; “Rebecca House is a fundamental part of the Hospice charity’s wider provision. It provides vital support to children and families and is a service that is almost entirely funded through both our own charitable efforts and the wonderful support of the Island’s community. This donation is not only massively generous but also very timely, helping us to sustain the services of Rebecca House into the immediate future. On behalf of everyone involved at Hospice, I extend our sincere thanks.”

Gary Walker and Marietjie Herbst from Kelproperties said; “The company, despite considerable holdups with planning for projects on island, has had a fantastic year from our developments and interests across. Our shareholder has a long record of donating profits to charities, particularly to the hospice movement and he is thrilled to be supporting Rebecca House. Indeed this donation is in addition to a previous £100,000 donated to Hospice IoM in recent years.”

NEW COMMUNITY SPACE AT ONCHAN AFC THANKS

TO

MANX LOTTERY TRUST FUNDING

A local Football Club has been granted a funding boost from Manx Lottery Trust towards the building of a multi-purpose space for the community.

Onchan AFC has been awarded £50,000 which will fund the roof build of a club house with male and female changing rooms, showers, toilets and welfare facilities. These facilities are needed in order for the Club to continue to maintain and grow to even higher standards of grassroots football coaching, training and development for both men and women across the Isle of Man.

The Football Club is the biggest voluntary run organisation in Onchan village, and is currently one of only 3 clubs in Manx football that has teams at every level. It supports approximately 300 registered players spread across two senior teams, a women’s team and a veterans team, as well as around 240 juniors who regularly participate, with ages ranging from 5 to 18 years old.

David Quirk, President of Onchan AFC, said: ‘Thank you to the Manx Lottery Trust for the funding support towards the clubhouse, which, when complete, will hugely benefit the community, current and future.

“Although the primary purpose will be used for Onchan AFC, the building and outdoor facilities could also be made available for community use in support of other activities. We also plan to use the space to host a number of events for continued fundraising for the Club.”

Stephen Turner, Chairman of Manx Lottery Trust, added: “We are happy to support Onchan AFC with this new project – the clubhouse and facilities will be used and enjoyed by many, making it a great asset to Onchan.”

EXPEDITION LIMITLESS 2023 –PREPARING FOR THE ARCTIC

In the winter 2022 edition, the 6 Bay Swim Challenge was featured as the first fundraising event for Omnia Mind’s Expedition Limitless 2023, which raised an incredible £17k. Since then, the Expedition team has been busy fundraising and preparing for the Expedition, which included a week of intensive cold weather training in Sweden.

8
PEOPLE

The expedition will take a team of 12 people (10 from the Isle of Man) on an incredible 110km, unsupported, snowshoe trek above the Arctic Circle, along the Kungsleden Trail, with two goals in mind, to raise £50,000 for Isle Listen and to demonstrate the innate resilience that resides in all of us, which is revealed through adversity.

In preparation for the unforgiving Arctic conditions, the team has undergone extensive winter survival skills training to prepare us for every eventuality including temperatures as low as -30 degrees Celsius. At these temperatures, even the smallest decision, like taking off a glove, has consequences. The training was delivered in Kavstabacken, Sweden under the expert guidance of Matt Larson-Clifford, (the owner of Sweden Outdoors Coaching) and Expedition Leader and Phil Quirk of Omnia Mind who conceived the idea of Expedition Limitless and who will also be an Expedition Leader.

Having met together as a full group for the first time in Arlanda airport, the Expedition team was about to embark on what would become an unforgettable week of adventure, resilience training and team bonding. There was an air of apprehension as we politely exchanged greetings, but it wasn’t long before we were faced with our first challenge when our bags and Arctic

kit didn’t arrive from London. The calibre of the team was quickly revealed as we worked together to get the bags on the next flight, negotiate a change to our non-refundable, non-changeable train tickets and get to Indal on time.

As we stepped off the train in Sundsvall, into -21 degrees Celsius, we were under no illusion that this was going to be a tough week. To put this into perspective, your home freezer is -15! The training week was designed to prepare us physically and mentally for the harsh conditions above the Arctic circle, but it also gave us an opportunity to test our kit and equipment and deal with any issues before the Expedition.

Training started with classroom lectures and then outside for a lesson on snowshoeing, which will be our means of transport along the Kungsleden trail. Trekking in snowshoes bring its own challenges but without them it’s impossible to move across the deep snow, so when outside, you wear them all the time. It was important for us to spend as much time as possible getting used to them.

Once snowshoeing was mastered, we were challenged with a whole host of other winter training activities to prepare us for life on the Expedition. The toughest of which was a full

9

day trek through the forest, in deep snow, with planned 5-minute breaks to eat and drink. Any more than a 5 minute break in the Arctic and your body temperature drops, so we have to keep moving to generate body heat and stay warm. After a long hard day on our feet, we finally arrived at our camp for the night and as the sun dropped below the horizon, the temperature plummeted to -16 degree Celsius, making even the simplest tasks challenging. It was essential that team worked quickly to light a fire, cook food, and prepare for the long, cold night ahead.

At -16 degrees Celsius, everything freezes quickly, so pitching our shelters and preparing our sleeping systems was critical to avoid hypothermia during the night. When sleeping in temperatures this low, all your kit, including your clothing and boots must be kept inside your sleeping bag to ensure they don’t freeze. Even with the appropriate sleeping system in place, it was brutally cold and difficult to stay warm during the night.

We broke camp at 7.30am after what was one of the toughest nights of our lives, we were cold and weary but had an even bigger challenge ahead. In just a few hours, the whole team would have to undertake a self-rescue from a hole cut from the ice on a frozen river. As we walked out of the forest, the team was unusually quiet in anticipation of what was to come.

When we arrived at the river and started to cut the hole in the ice, it became all too real. The air

10
As we stepped off the train in Sundsvall, into -21 degrees Celsius, we were under no illusion that this was going to be a tough week.

temperature was -13 and the water temperature was on the verge of freezing, but this was what training week was all about, getting out of our comfort zone, building resilience, and supporting each other as a team.

We were all nervous and quiet with our thoughts but thanks to Phil and Matt’s training, we had built a strong team dynamic during the week and not wanting to let each other down, it was clear everybody was going in, including our camera man Simon. What an incredible achievement on our last day of training. On the trek back to camp the team spirit was high with an intense feeling of collective accomplishment. After supporting each other through those last 24 hours, it felt like there was nothing we couldn’t accomplish together.

Training week was a great success. We learnt a lot about ourselves and each other but more importantly, we formed a very strong team bond. We are all looking forward to meeting again in Abisko, at the start of the Kungsleden trail for what will be an adventure of a lifetime above the Arctic Circle.

We are now back on the Isle of Man, training and continuing our fundraising efforts for Isle Listen. We are so grateful for the support we have received so far from our sponsors and the very generous, Manx public. If you would like to support the team by making a donation, you will find the team’s individual and overall donation pages on JustGiving, just search for Expedition Limitless 2023.

Expedition Limitless 2023 is the first of 4 incredible expeditions taking place between 2023 & 2026, with the pinnacle being an expedition to the South Pole in 2026, so watch

this space. Along the way, Expedition Limitless hopes to raise hundreds of thousands of pounds for IOM charities.

A special thank you to our amazing partners, corporate and proxy sponsors who have made this possible - Omnia Health Group, Zurich International, IQEQ, 1886, MuchBetter, Boston Consulting Group, Atla Group, The Rotary Club, Simply Nutrition and Mountain Equipment for supplying our Arctic clothing.

The team will leave for the Arctic on the 25 March, and you can follow our progress on our Facebook page - Expedition Limitless 2023.

Ana Dawson tees up new sponsorship with

RL360 has taken on the role of headline sponsor for Manx professional golfer Ana Dawson.

An event to officially launch the partnership was held on Thursday 16 February at the Bay Green Restaurant at Castletown Golf Links. Amongst the attendees were RL360’s CEO David Kneeshaw, Marketing Director Simon Barwell and Graeme Gault, Ana’s manager, Director of Vannin Sports Management.

Fresh back from her professional debut in Kenya earlier this month, Ana spoke about the sponsorship and her hopes for the coming season:

“It’s an amazing feeling to be playing at this level; I’ve already had my first event and can’t wait to get back on the course. The standard for women’s golf has improved so much over the years and I want to help showcase this by

12 PEOPLE

playing in as many tournaments as possible, a goal that’s a lot more achievable because of the financial support from RL360. I’m so grateful for all the support I’ve received over the years from family, friends and now RL360 and I look forward to representing the company and the Isle of Man as I travel across Europe.”

Born into a family of avid golfers, Ana’s love for the sport started at a young age. She spent much of her childhood and teenage years perfecting her swing at Peel Golf Club. From early on, it was clear that Ana had a real talent for the sport. In 2014, she made England’s Under 16’s North West squad after competing against 150 junior golfers across the country and then again for the Under 18’s. During this time, Ana managed top 20 finishes in prestigious amateur events such as the Fairhaven Trophy and the Scottish Girls Open Championship.

Ana’s performances earned her a sports scholarship at the University of Memphis, and she went on to spend 4 years representing the University’s golf team in interstate tournaments whilst studying Sports and Hospitality Management.

After graduating in 2022, Ana returned to the UK to continue playing golf in what would be her final season as an amateur golfer. One of the biggest highlights of last year was reaching the final of the prestigious Faldo Series, which is the only global event for high-level amateur male and female players, after winning the qualifying event in Wales by ten strokes. Overall, Ana finished the series as the highest-ranking female player in 7th place in the mixed gender standings.

The only thing standing in her way from full playing status on the Ladies European Tour (LET) was Qualifying School in La Manga, Spain which meant playing 4 rounds against 140 of the best amateur golfers in Europe. After a strong opening round with a par score of 71, Ana endured a difficult second and third round, which put her under immense pressure to make it through to the final qualifiers. Through grit and determination, she pulled off a 2 under par of round 69 and a 4 under par final round that saw her fly up the leaderboard and claim the second highest category (16) on offer.

On 2 February, Ana played in her first professional tournament at the Magical Kenya Ladies Open at Vipingo Ridge Resort, where she endured 30 degree heat over 4 days to make the final cut and finish in 54th place. A great start to the season and a sign that the best is still yet to come.

Ana joins fellow pro golfer Tom Gandy, who has been sponsored by RL360 and Friends Provident International (both part of International Financial Group Limited) since 2020, as part of the company’s Athlete Sponsorship Programme.

RL360’s Simon Barwell commented on the importance of supporting home-grown talent like Ana:

“We set up the programme back in 2020 to help local athletes reach their highest potential, and even before that we had sponsored sport shooter Tim Kneale who went on to compete in the Rio Olympics and the 2018 Commonwealth Games. When the opportunity to sponsor Ana came up, it seemed a natural fit. There’s no doubt that she’ll go far and we look forward to supporting her along the way. ”

Blending Partnerships

Which side of the argument are you on? Are the best wines produced from a single varietal or a blend of two or more varieties.

ACalifornian Cabernet Sauvignon drinker will insist that the structure and flavour in a powerful Napa Valley Cab is unbeatable and a white Burgundy lover will tell you that complexity doesn’t come much better than in the form of an exquisitely balanced Chardonnay from the limestone soils of the Cote d’Or. There is no doubt that a wine such as Joseph Pascal’s Bourgogne Chardonnay is a superb wine with its mineral freshness and mouth filling richness and the perfect match to creamy dishes such as fish pie or a mushroom risotto.

However, in other regions such as Bordeaux and the southern Rhone, the best wines have always been produced from two or more varieties. Nobody can argue that the First and Second Growth clarets are among the world’s finest reds and yet are almost always a blend of Cabernet with Merlot and sometimes a little Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot added to the mix!

A St Emilion Grand Cru from the right bank of the river Gironde will be mainly Merlot with a smaller percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon and / or Cabernet Franc included to add structure and tannin to the wines. This will vary from vintage to vintage depending on conditions and

it is down to the skill of the winemaker to create the best blend from the grapes harvested. Try St Emilion Grand Cru Chateau Boutisse for an example of a perfect blend of more two varieties.

One of the more unusual is the blend of Syrah and Viognier. Most commonly found in Cote Rotie in the northern Rhone where the very poor granite soils help to produce wines of immense structure. Historically the two varieties were planted together and the winemakers found that this ‘field blend’ actually worked really well. The Viognier actually enhances the colour of the Syrah rather than diluting it. The chemical compounds in the Viognier grapes help to stabilise and retain the colour of the Syrah. Viognier has distinctive aromas of peach and spice, which adds an extra dimension to the blackberry, plum, tobacco and sometimes farmyard character of the Syrah. It also gives a silky texture to the wine.

The Portuguese version from Alentejo (Telhas) is the same blend. Telhas is the Portuguese word for tiles and refers to remnants of terracotta tiles found in the vineyards. The wine is produced from grapes grown in a small ridge of granite vineyards, selected especially for planting these two varieties. The grapes are cofermented and aged in French oak. At about a third of the price of Cote Rotie, it has similar delicately perfumed aromas and the same savoury, black fruit, cedar and spicy flavours.

A rare white partnership is that of Chardonnay with Sauvignon Blanc. Most wine drinkers favour one or the other but the Basic Instinct sulphite free white is a blend of 80% Chardonnay and 20% Sauvignon Blanc. There is no oak involved, fermentation takes place in concrete lined tanks and there is no sulphur added at any point in the winemaking process. It has wonderfully fresh aromas of white flowers and citrus which follow on to flavours of peach and melon finishing with a citrus freshness. A less well known but successful partnership.

Whichever side of the fence you find yourself on, there will be plenty of good wines to enjoy. Why not sit on the top and simply jump down to whichever side you choose each time?!

The Perfect Partnerships

Whether it be salt and pepper, buckets and spades, hats and scarfs, some things are just meant to be together. Finding the perfect partnership can be wildly successful for a brand. It might be a big brand or a celebrity name, the right pairing can make a campaign memorable and, if done correctly, a huge success!

1. RL360 Youth Cycling League and Dot Tilbury MBE

Dot Tilbury is a national treasure on the Isle of Man. Best known for her ceaseless work supporting young Manx cyclists; Dot is a household name and is synonymous with the RL360 Youth Cycling League. The league began in 1992 and has seen many stars rise up through the ranks, including Matt Bostock, Tour de France legend Mark Cavendish and Lizzie Holden. 200-400 young riders race at the NSC each week, all under Dot’s watchful eye. Each year, Dot hosts a fantastic award ceremony for the young cyclists, but we all know that it’s Dot’s hard work and dedication that needs recognition. RL360 is very proud of our association with both Dot and the League.

2. Daley Thompson and Lucozade

Lucozade began as a well-known after illness recovery drink in 1927, bought for the days you were too sick to move off the couch. Cue Daley Thompson. In 1983, the two-time Olympic gold medallist was selected to switch Lucozade from a sick drink, to a sports drink in a huge rebrand. Lucozade wanted to be a recovery-fromexercise drink, getting that little bit extra out of your training session, increasing your lactic acid tolerance, gaining the edge on the opposition and winning. The iconic advert starring Thompson still sticks out for many people, focusing on the amber traffic light and iconic orange glass bottle.

3. Sir Lenny Henry and Premier Inn

Lenny Henry first brought you the ‘great night guarantee’ in 2008 when he became the voice and face of Britain’s biggest budget hotel operator Premier Inn. These adverts were great hits, showing the comfort, affordability and versatility of the hotels. Sir Lenny has starred in 14 adverts and he can still be found plugging the brand today. If you’re wondering the same as us, Sir Lenny Henry has been known to only use Premier Inn hotels, and did so for 5 months during his UK tour in 2011, visiting 56 hotels. If it’s good enough for Lenny Henry, chances are its good enough for you and me.

4. Coca Cola and McDonald’s

McDonald’s is Coca Cola’s largest restaurant customer. These iconic companies have been partners since 1955 when Ray Kroc bought the rights to expand McDonald’s across the United States and needed a beverage supplier. This turned out to be one of the best partnerships of all time and allowed both companies to grow and expand around the globe. Both companies claim neither one would be where they are today without the other. In 1993, Coke executives suggested that McDonald’s bundle its soda with a burger and fries for a promotion, creating the Extra Value Meal. Coke sales teams are prohibited from selling syrup to other restaurants for less than McDonald’s pays, even if that means losing business to competitors.

5. Post Malone and Crocs

For many years, Crocs have had a bad reputation for being an ugly shoe, however, there’s no denying that there’s been a huge resurgence of this rubber clog on the high street. Crocs appeal to people of all ages and gender due to being a comfortable, fashionable, customisable, fun shoe. Popularity has increased, mainly due to big name celebrities and designers who have collaborated with the ‘dad shoe’. In 2018, pop singer Post Malone brought Crocs to the stage and gained a lot of attention. Post Malone was the first celebrity to wear the shoe loud and proud, and now has five limited edition collaborations, the first of which sold out in ten minutes. Since then, big names such as Justin Bieber, Liberty London, Disney Hocus Pocus, Jimmy Kimmel, and many more have collaborated with the brand.

6. Gary Lineker and Walker’s crisps

If there is one thing the former Leicester City and England striker Gary Lineker did not expect to be known for, it was his love of crisps. Lineker has been the poster boy for Walker’s crisps since 1994 and has done over 150 adverts for them in this time. Lineker even had a timeless classic flavour renamed after him, the 'Salt and Lineker' crisps, first in 1996 and again in 2021. As the biggest crisp brand in the UK and Ireland, it might not surprise you to learn Gary reportedly earns an impressive £1.5m every year from this role.

8. Paddington Bear and HRH Queen Elizabeth

There is an unlikely connection between a small Peruvian bear in a blue coat and the Late Monarch, which dates back to 1986, when children’s author Michael Bond, wrote the book ‘Paddington at the Palace’. Fast forward to June 2022, when Paddington Bear helped the Queen launch her Platinum Jubilee celebrations, with a cup of tea and a shared love for marmalade sandwiches. Paddington represents kindness, tolerance, kindness to strangers and politeness, all values the Queen embodied throughout her life. For many, when Queen Elizabeth passed away, it seemed fitting to leave Paddington Bear soft toys outside Buckingham Palace as many found comfort in the loveable brown bear. As a result, more than 1,000 Paddington Bear toys left in honour of the Queen were donated to a children’s charity.

9. Marcus Rashford MBE and FareShare

During the Covid-19 Pandemic, in March 2020, 25-yearold Manchester United and England footballer Marcus Rashford set up a campaign to prevent children in England from going hungry. FareShare launched an urgent Covid-19 appeal calling for donations, food and volunteers, claiming that demand for food almost doubled within one month of the lockdown. Marcus became the ambassador of FareShare having said his own family relied on breakfast clubs, free school meals and at times, food banks. Marcus made several significant financial donations to help ensure vulnerable children could continue to access food, calling on his millions of followers to donate and support the cause. This allowed over 21 million meals for children and families to be distributed, as well as influence government policy that saw the voucher scheme extended over the summer holidays. Marcus Rashford, now MBE, is a national hero, recognised for his poverty activism as much as for his footballing talent.

7. James Bond and his Aston Martin

The perfect partnership between James Bond and his fully-loaded, tweaked and tricked-out Austin Martin is unmatched by any other film franchise. Aston Martin is a classic, luxury and timeless brand, matched perfectly with the personification of James Bond. The Aston Martin DB5 is the car that started it all when it debuted in the 1964 James Bond film Goldfinger. The car made such an impression that it has since appeared in six more Bond films: Thunderball, GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies, Casino Royale, Skyfall and Spectre. Sean Connery, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig have all driven at the wheel of the unmistakable 1960’s sports car. No Time To Die also featured an Aston Martin V8 Saloon which was both the fastest four-seat production car of its day and Britain’s first true ‘supercar ’. The Valhalla - Aston Martin’s revolutionary mid-engine sports car - also made a special cameo appearance in No Time To Die.

10. Nike and Michael Jordan

In 1984, Michael Jordan signed a 5-year deal with Nike, which was reportedly worth $2.5 million. A year later, Nike gave Jordan his own signature shoe and the Nike Air Jordan was born, a shoe so different to anything else on the market at the time that he was fined $5,000 every time he wore them in a game. Nike paid this fine on Jordan’s behalf because it was great marketing for the shoe, being photographed during iconic moments in Jordan’s career. Since then, there have been over 30 different signature Air Jordan’s in hundreds of different variations. Jordan’s brand is so successful that he’s now made more money through his personal brand then he ever made playing in the NBA. The first pair sold for $65, however nowadays, Air Jordans regularly sell for $200 or more a pair, with certain pairs fetching thousands. In 2016, the Jordan brand brought in $3 billion in revenue for Nike, which is 35% of the total company revenue.

Painters thrive as the Manx Artful Dodgers

Tinstructing the oil painting classes for beginners, introducing basic marksmanship. And it’s a very international group, introducing each other to their own experiences from backgrounds which included Georgia/Latvian and Chinese, as well as Manx-born and from across.

“Last year we were asked to produce oil paintings for a pop-up exhibition as part of an art project,” says course leader Anna, “and the Artful Dodgers rose to the challenge. The theme was the Manx Landscape and the exhibition, held at the Engine House in Castletown in November, was curated, promoted and run by the students, many of whom hadn’t exhibited their oil paintings before.”

It was very successful, with the artists enjoying interacting with

34
CULTURE

the visitors and even making a few sales, so it’s no surprise that there will be another pop-up exhibition later this year. “Watch out for more information on social media” says Anna, “and of course in Gallery!”

Many of the group’s members have used these classes to rekindle a dormant love of painting, either from studying art at school or university or working in an artistic or creative field but whose lives had taken them down a different path. Naturally as time went on, the class gained some new faces and sadly lost a few, but the core group have stayed together.

Claire Ormerod is one of the Artful Dodgers: “I studied art through A level but life took over and it wasn’t until I dropped down to part-time working that I tried oil painting

with Anna,” Claire says, “and she was so encouraging that I’m actually painting in my own time again, after 27 years! Putting on an exhibition was so daunting at first,” she continues, “particularly after the challenges the pandemic had brought. I’d injured my hand during lockdown and it would have been so easy just to give up, but my doctor and physio told me to use my hand as much as possible and it was so good to have my painting to focus on. The success of the exhibition was a bonus and so encouraging.”

And now there is something else exciting for the Artful Dodgers to focus on: Manx singer/songwriter Christine Collister has asked the group to produce paintings inspired by her new songs, which are based on Manx folklore and a ‘magical sense of space’. Anna is

very enthusiastic about this project and says, “I’m looking forward to seeing how the Artful Dodgers interpret Christine’s brief and I know it will stretch their skills and imaginations to the full.”

Here at Gallery we look forward to sharing the results in a future issue.

If you would like to turn your hand to oil painting whether you’re a complete beginner or a returner to art, the UCM classes run for 9 weeks in the Spring and Autumn terms and continue at the Arts Society during the rest of the year. More information about these classes is on the Anna Clucas Fine Art Facebook and Instagram pages www.facebook.com/ annaclucasartist @annaclucasfineart and to see what the Artful Dodgers are up to follow www.facebook.com/ manxartfuldodgers

Images: Elly Kelly (with thanks to Margaret Claydon)

Ialways knew Elly Kelly was a talented photographer and artist, but I had no idea she was going to write a novel as compelling as The Nihilist & The Butterfly Catcher

Elly was born in the Isle of Man in 1971, and the novel, although set in the wilds of Scotland, feels very Manx: a story about a young woman, Kate, travelling around in her dilapidated van, looking for an elusive ‘something’. Kate’s a loner, happy with her own company, creating art from pebbles, shells and seaweed on the beach and taking photographs for her blog before the art is washed away by the tides. Then along comes troubled runaway Grace, sparking an unfamiliar caring instinct which Kate finds almost frightening: unlike her art, she has no control over it, or over Grace.

36
CULTURE
“I wrote a novel and I blame you. 77,000 words! And all of them in proper sentences!”-

The two women rub along together – Kate vacillates between wanting to hand Grace over to the authorities, and wanting to keep her close. Grace, for reasons that become clear, would rather continue running than go back to her old life, and when photographer Alec arrives in their lives, everything changes.

To go into more detail would very likely ruin the book for you but, as the blurb on the back already says that one heroine is doomed you know it’s not going to end well for someone. And compelling though it is, The Nihilist & The Butterfly Catcher is not an easy read: it covers some challenging issues – probable Asperger’s, child abuse, incest, depression, and a nihilist’s view of life as meaningless. But sadly The Nihilist and The Butterfly Catcher is both Elly’s first and last novel - she died from Covid in early 2021.

The novel’s genesis was anything but easy and was undoubtedly influenced in part by Elly’s experiences as a digital forensics expert examining seized computers to help prosecute child abusers. This had a profound effect on her - she eventually gave the job up due to the distress and stress it caused - and, as you might expect from an IT expert, the draft novel was hidden on her computer hard drive, protected by passwords and security only Elly could decode. Although she had shared hard copies of early drafts with her mother Margaret Claydon, when Elly died Margaret assumed it was lost forever. However, and without telling Margaret, Elly had also shared the drafts with author, editor and publisher Claire Josefine, at whose off-grid Airbnb in California Elly had stayed in Sept 2017. The two women had become friends and kept in touch - ‘I make a good penpal’ Elly said - and when the novel was finished in January 2018 she emailed it to Claire who then offered to copyedit it free of charge.

“It sucked me in from the start,” says Claire now. “I wrote to her to say how much I’d liked it, despite the disturbing content and that I felt it was definitely worth publishing. But life went on, and I’m ashamed to say that I dropped the ball on finishing editing the novel, although we continued our online chats and emailing,” Claire continues. “Then all went quiet so in early 2021 I sent a message asking if everything was okay, what with Covid and everything, but didn’t hear back. And then one day I got a Facebook

notification that someone had commented on her page. That’s how I learned that she was gone. Damned Covid got her.”

Soon afterwards Claire contacted Margaret via Facebook and told her she had Elly’s draft of The Nihilist & The Butterfly Catcher, and although it took many months of cross-continent editing and design, eventually in late 2022 Claire published The Nihilist & The Butterfly Catcher on her own imprint Winter’s Daughter Press.

It’s always difficult to be objective about books written by friends, but I’m not the only person to think that The Nihilist & The Butterfly Catcher is an astonishing read. Fellow author Graham Hamer (The Manx Connection and The French Collection series) says he is “green with envy that someone should have the ability to create such a monumental gem at their very first attempt. It is better than good, it’s brilliant.” Breesha Maddrell says that what stands out in The Nihilist & The Butterfly Catcher for her is “Elly’s ability to quietly and intelligently name the fragility of life simply held together through quiet acceptance and awkward companionship. What is beautiful can be fleeting but these stories of hers will endure.” And Cat Jenkins thinks “Elly’s characters fairly leapt of the page…I found myself very invested in how their stories unfolded. This is a book I won’t forget any time soon.”

Margaret says that Elly always wanted to be a novelist but I don’t think she’d have been able to write this novel without also being an artist. The descriptions of Kate’s beach installations and even the plaster casts of her own face that she carries around in a cardboard box, are not just Kate’s work, they are Elly’s: a project which exists outside the novel. The cover photo of a mask emerging from the beach was chosen by Elly but Margaret posed the mask on the rear cover herself, on what is not sand, but Elly’s ashes: a haunting reminder of - and tribute to - her daughter.

The Buggane images which divide the chapters were also Margaret’s idea. “Elly’s draft just had asterisks,” says Claire, “so Margaret suggested an image of the shape-shifting magical butterflies which Elly had originally created for an exhibition of Manx folklore.”

“Bugganes are called on by fairies to

punish those who offend them,” says Margaret, “and as a true Manxie, Elly was wary of fairies, always making her outdoor sculptures and artworks ‘Buggane friendly’. So although some of Elly’s images of Bugganes are supposed to scare, I chose the more delicate beautiful butterfly images to keep them happy.”

Copies of The Nihilist & The Butterfly Catcher cost £5.99 from the Bridge Bookshops in Port Erin and Ramsey. The pop-up Green Centre under the carpark on Chester Street, Douglas every Saturday has copies, along with prints of Elly’s Buggane images. Margaret is making a donation to IOM homeless charities from every sale as ‘this seems relevant and appropriate.’ I’m sure Elly would approve.

HERE’S GALLERY’S GUIDE ON WHAT TO WEAR FOR YOUR WORKOUT

With every new year comes a new wave of fitness frenzy - self confessed over indulgers hell bent on winding back the endless mince pies and tins upon tins of Quality Streets. And whilst we don’t disagree with fitness resolutions and aspirations of five gym classes a week, we believe healthy living should be a year long affair rather than something clutched at in the first months of the year but quickly forgotten by Easter. So if you’re in the camp of long term fitness doers, here are our picks on what to wear for your workout. From pilates to pushups and post-class smoothies, these are the gym garms to buy now.

BJÖRN BORG

Shortly after retiring from his successful tennis career, Björn Borg transitioned from sportsman to fashion designer creating a clothing collection focused on tech fabrics that are as eye-catching as his tennis records. Often coined as a rock’n’roll star draped in tennis clothes, it’s no surprise that Björn’s collection is great. Think retro-inspired patterns and colours applied to modern fits. Take the Borg Crop tank, the navy and white stripes are reminiscent of the American varsity style clothing Borg wore on court in the 1970s but its been modernised with a handy phone pocket designed into the racerback.

Get your hands on a pair, or for something a bit snazzier take a gander at the huge range of colours and patterned bottoms on offer in Voisins now. We love the navy sparkling seamless gym leggings, which come with a matching crop top and would look great with the Pathfinder Jacket.

Fast forward 20 odd years and the tech behind those underlayers remains but the collection has expanded to include everything you’d need to wear to workout. Technicality meets trendy for this season's collection, with neon shades of orange and pink slashing across shorts and tees. There’s plenty of black and navy on offer too for those wanting something a little less loud.

QUESTIONS WHICH ALL ESTATE AGENTS HEAR EVERY DAY, BUT WILL THE NEW LAND REGISTRY DASHBOARD, LAUNCHED IN FEBRUARY, HELP WITH THE ANSWERS?

The quick answer is sort of. It’s based on historical figures recorded by the Land Registry – from October 2021 – with a daily update on transactions currently being processed, and the length of time these transactions are taking (currently 58 days from purchase to being registered with land registry). But this is NOT what every house seller/buyer wants to know: how long does it take from offer to moving in. And the dashboard doesn’t just cover the housing market, but also transactions of commercial property and ‘burdens’ which include remortgages.

But if you like statistics, there are lots of them and it certainly does attempt to increase transparency around property transactions. We’ve picked out just a few:

Isle of Man Benef icial Ownership

Beneficial ownership has been a hot topic for many years – sparking debate in political and business circles, as well as generating a steady stream of media headlines around the world.

It is a vital tool in helping international law enforcement agencies to pursue allegations of financial crime. But for a country’s beneficial ownership database to be effective, the entries must be accurate and up to date.

And it’s not just larger, more complex structures that need to be aware of their responsibilities in this regard – it’s equally important for the one-man-bands, the entrepreneurs and the smaller owneroperated businesses.

So, if you are a painter and decorator or a bookkeeper, or if you own and run a café or a hair salon, you must ensure your firm is registered on the beneficial ownership database – and that the information provided is correct.

The Financial Services Authority (‘the Authority’) is working in conjunction with the Central Registry and the Financial Intelligence Unit to spearhead an awarenessraising campaign aimed at improving the quality of entries.

Compliance with the legislation supports wider efforts to show that the Island takes appropriate steps to protect consumers, reduce financial crime and limit the opportunity for criminal elements to hide behind Manx registered companies.

56 AGENDA

The Authority recently delivered a presentation at the 2023 Manx State of the Nation conference to highlight the expectations on Island firms that fall within the scope of the Beneficial Ownership Act 2017.

This was part of an engagement and outreach programme to urge all relevant parties to take action to fulfil their responsibilities, rather than face potential enforcement action.

Ian Spence, Head of the Authority’s AML/CFT Division, said: ‘It is essential that obligations are being met in respect of beneficial ownership. All relevant companies and other entities are required to have a nominated officer who is responsible for the accuracy and timeliness of information submitted to the beneficial ownership database. For many smaller firms, the person running the business may well also be the owner and the nominated officer, so the details required are quite straightforward. For some larger, more complex structures a Corporate Services Provider may be appointed to perform the function.’

He added: ‘We are giving all nominated officers the opportunity to review the beneficial ownership details of the entities they represent and make sure that entries are up to date. In some cases, this might just involve a check to ensure the name, details and contact information are accurate in the database. In others, it could be that although the entity has been registered in the companies register the additional step of recording details in the beneficial ownership database may have been missed out when the company was formed.

‘The necessary steps can be completed online, often in just a few minutes. We would much prefer companies to do this proactively, rather than leave themselves open to the possibility of enforcement action and a civil penalty.’ Here, we set out some of the key information that you need to know…

What is a ‘beneficial owner’?

A ‘beneficial owner’ means a natural person who ultimately owns or controls a legal entity, in whole or in part, through direct or indirect ownership or control of shares or voting rights or other ownership interest, or who exercises control via other means.

This is an intentionally broad definition which attempts to identify any individual who holds a defined interest in a company.

However, not all beneficial owners must be recorded on the beneficial ownership database.

What is a ‘registrable beneficial owner’?

It is only necessary to record details of ‘registrable beneficial owners’ on the database. A registrable beneficial owner is defined as ‘a beneficial owner who owns or controls more than 25%’ of a company or legal entity.

Nominated Officers

The Nominated Officer plays an important role. All relevant companies must appoint a Nominated Officer to submit their beneficial ownership information to the Central Registry’s beneficial ownership database. For a small business, such as a hair salon, the director may assume this role alongside their other duties. However, many businesses may choose to appoint a third party to act as the Nominated Officer on their behalf, such as a Corporate Services Provider (CSP).

Your next steps

It is very simple to submit or update your beneficial ownership information. The Nominated Officer will receive a log-in code for the Companies Registry section of the Isle of Man Government’s Online Services portal. It should take no more than a few moments to input the required information (e.g. Name, Nature of Interest, Percentage of Interest, and Appointment Date). If you require a new log-in code, please contact Central Registry.

Guidance

Guidance is available on both the Companies Registry’s and FSA’s websites. Please reach out to either the Central Registry or the Financial Services Authority with any questions regarding the process. The FSA can be contacted via the email address Beneficial.Ownership@iomfsa.im, whereas the Central Registry can be reached via companies.registry@gov.im

A former engineering student from University College Isle of Man (UCM) has landed a role in the world of motorsport.

Frankie Stennett has joined BWT Alpine Formula 1 Team, working to operate and programme various Mazak machinery, and producing a large variety of components directly for the cars, test rigs, and bespoke pit-equipment.

The cars Frankie is working on are driven by BWT Alpine teammates Fernando Alonso, who is a legendary two-time F1 World Champion, and Esteban Ocon, who is in his third season with the team.

During his time at UCM, Frankie studied at the William Kennish Engineering Centre and Hills Meadow Advanced Manufacturing Training Centre (AMTC), two realistic working environments which include modern workshops with world-class equipment that allow students to understand and work with industry standard machinery.

Frankie said: “I always enjoyed the hands-on manufacturing side of things whilst at UCM and think this is what sparked my interest in programming and one of the reasons I’m now working in F1.”

A key component of Frankie’s studies involved undertaking industry apprenticeships which he completed with Ronaldsway Aircraft Company and Triumph Actuation Systems.

59 AGENDA

Changing careers is difficult, lonely, daunting and expensive.

I should know: after a decade in advertising, I switched to journalism in my mid thirties, which not only meant starting at the bottom (one editor helpfully pointed out that I was “the oldest intern ever”) but also halved my pay. It took me four years to catch up.

Plan for five careers in a lifetime

Work is impermanent — reinvention is rational

I pressed on because it was the right move, and it worked out. But there is always a niggling worry at the back of my mind: what happens if my job vanishes? I hope and trust it will not, but news organisations, like many sectors, are in a state of constant disruption. Should I work on a back-up plan?

More of us must be doing just that. In the UK, official data show we are increasingly likely to resign voluntarily. A survey by Investec found more than half of Brits were planning to change career in the next five years. In the US, according to a study by LinkedIn, young workers now switch jobs, though not necessarily careers, four times in their first 10 years after graduation.

Thanks to automation and the forces of globalisation, working life is impermanent and unpredictable, and will only become more so. That is daunting, but it is also liberating. We are increasingly willing to take control.

For today’s business education graduates, especially those on broad-based, multidisciplinary programmes such as masters in management, now might be the most exhilarating period in decades in which to start a career.

60
AGENDA CAREERS

Graduates could opt for a well-paid job in, say, finance. If they are lucky, they can expect to sprint from their mid-twenties before hitting a career peak in their forties. If they are unlucky, they will be pushed out by automation.

Alternatively, and in full confidence that they are making a rational decision as artificial intelligence encroaches on the work of juniors, graduates may decide to take the long view, try a slower route and see if it works out. Starting a business, perhaps, or experimenting with a sideline or two.

They may decide to do both, and this is likely to turn out to be the safest option of all. Recently I met a woman in her fifties who had done just that. She will soon qualify as a lawyer, her fourth career, and was looking forward to a long stint. She struck me as unusual for her generation: she was in her early fifties — an age at which, in the recent past, many older baby boomers were thinking about retirement.

An early academic career had led to museum work, and by her thirties she was curating exhibitions at leading international galleries in London and Berlin. Curating, she explained, is a precarious profession. So later, in her forties, she developed a sideline — teaching the practicalities of entrepreneurship to art undergraduates.

This turned into a fascination with intellectual property law. At 46, she started gruelling legal training. Years later, she is now a trainee for a boutique IP firm in the City of London. In another year or so she will be qualified. Would it be her last career? She couldn’t say.

I asked why she had refreshed her professional life so often. She had lived with uncertainty, which was a spur, but more important was satisfying her curiosity. One discipline and career was not enough at any one time, let alone for an entire working life. Accumulating wealth did not preoccupy her. There was no time: she was thinking about her next challenge. She was a perpetual self-improver.

Many of us with jobs live with the impermanent nature of work. It makes sense to seek protection by reinventing ourselves before someone else decides we are dispensable. I started over once, and would be prepared to do it again. In this world, planning for multiple careers is the only rational response.

Ultimately, they connected us with candidates that exceeded our expectations and that has already made a great impact on our business. As we grow our business over the coming years, we now only make one call when recruiting. We highly recommend Recruitment Works to anyone looking for a reliable, dedicated recruitment partner,” Michael, Managing Director, start-up eGaming Company

They have provided us with excellent candidates for our open positions, and their guidance and advice regarding the recruitment process have been invaluable. Their team is always professional, friendly, and knowledgeable, and

they are always willing to go the extra mile to ensure we find the right person for the job. We highly recommend Recruitment Works to anyone searching for a reliable and experienced recruitment agency.”

Or this, from Andrew, Managing Director of a Trust Company: “Our experience with Recruitment Works has always been friendly, professional and efficient. They are always attentive, listen carefully to our requirements and then work hard to find the right candidates for the role. We have built a strong relationship with members of their team and the type of candidates put forward continue to be of a high standard.”

But what do the successful candidates say? There are a number of testimonials on www. recuitmentworks.im but a recent candidate Lucy has this to say: “When I was made redundant, I thought I’d never find another position like it again, but within weeks of contacting RW I was put forward for interviews and, thanks to the Recruitment Works team, I now have a career and a future to look forward to.”

Carmella is keen to credit the whole Recruitment Works team for their part in the company’s success: “I’d like to thank all our staff, Jonathan, Jo, Rebekah and Ashleigh for their dedication and hard work. Without their commitment and passion, we would not have been able to reach this milestone. I am truly grateful for their contributions and look forward to working with them for many more years to come and, to mark our 10th anniversary,” Carmella continues, “we are looking forward to reconnecting with those whom we have had the pleasure to work with in the past, and meeting those we may be working with in the future. It is an opportunity to reflect on the

achievements of the past and to plan ahead for the years to come.

“We have exciting plans for the future and expansion is most definitely on the horizon. We relocated to the recently renovated Clinches Harbour Court Building at the end of last year, with a view to evolving the business and the services that we are able to offer. AGENDA

Why have you pursued a career in sustainability?

I’ve always felt very connected to nature, particularly the interactions between nature and society. This led me to studying Environmental Sciences at university, which piqued my interest in sustainability.

There is no simple answer to sustainability challenges, you have to consider and balance a variety of factors, and this is what drives me. There is also power in connecting with and working within a group of like-minded, ambitious individuals who want to tackle problems and find solutions that not only impact this generation but all generations to come – it is this shared direction and passion that drives innovation, which I find both exciting and inspiring.

Sustainability (and the energy sector) is at the forefront of technical and social innovation. A role like mine within this sector can be diverse; ranging from research that informs policy, driving the development of smart technology, renewable energy and green gases, through to helping to develop nature-based offsetting solutions. It’s also a really dynamic industry that requires an interdisciplinary mindset, as well as strong interpersonal and problemsolving skills.

Why is it great to work at Islands Energy Group?

IEG has given me an amazing platform to grow and develop my skillset, with the wide variety of projects I am working on as well as access to support and training. It’s exciting to work for a company that is putting net zero at the

Amelia Louden

SUSTAINABILITY COORDINATOR ISLANDS ENERGY GROUP

forefront, particularly in recognising the role gas has to play in the energy transition.

No two days are the same, each day offers new and unique challenges. I am currently working hard on completing IEG’s carbon reporting to international standards, developing internal carbon literacy training and rethinking how we communicate sustainability in a refreshed and more engaging format.

How has your role transitioned from intern to sustainability coordinator?

My internship during the summer of 2022 set me up well for my role now as sustainability coordinator. My internship gave me the opportunity to apply the knowledge I gained from my degree and develop important workplace skills and set personal objectives. This then gave me the tools and confidence necessary to have meaningful input and manage the higher responsibilities and projects I work on as sustainability coordinator.

Why are you passionate about helping the environment?

I developed a real passion for the sustainability of our environment and climate change mitigation during my degree in Environmental Sciences. I studied climate change projections, sea level rise projections

and the direct link between these and complete ecosystem collapse. The more I learnt, the more I wanted to protect the environment and I wanted to focus on what we can do. I want to help make sustainability more accessible and put a spotlight on the positive impacts even small actions can have in communities.

What do you do to personally minimise your environmental impact?

I eat a vegetarian diet and where possible I buy local seasonal produce. I’ve also cut down on single use plastic and keep a reusable bottle and coffee cup in my bag. I am limiting my consumption of fast fashion and enjoy buying second hand in charity shops and online (Depop/ Vinted), this is both good for the planet and is more budget friendly! After completing a range of brand research, I now try to only buy from brands that cut down on plastic and waste.

65
Choosing this as my career is one way I hope to make a difference.
I believe passionate people and communities drive change and innovation, which are necessary to tackle sustainability problems in our environment.

2 YEARS AT UTMOST

I joined Utmost over 2 years ago in the Business Analysis team, during the pandemic, and have recently transferred into the Finance department as a Performance Analyst.

I really enjoy the dynamic environment at Utmost, giving me new challenges every day. Since joining I have been able to grow my skillset into new areas and know

that regardless of what is sent my way, I have a great team around to support me.

I joined the company shortly after finishing university. Many years later I’ve had numerous opportunities, working in all teams in the Investment area and getting involved in various initiatives across the business. ELLIE GLASSEY JUNIOR HR BUSINESS PARTNER

5 YEARS AT UTMOST

I started my Utmost journey in the Investment department. This gave me a real insight into an office environment having come straight from completing my A Levels, which was a massive change for me. I moved from the Settlements team across to the Investment Control team allowing me to be crosstrained within the business. In 2021 I applied internally for a HR Administrator role, as it’s a career I have always had an interest in. I got the role and can honestly say it’s the best decision I ever made. From working with the Talent and Recruitment lead for 8 months, to being promoted to Junior HR Business Partner – Team

Lead in May 2022, I get to work alongside the HR Business Partners with increased responsibilities.

I am lucky enough to get involved in a wide range of tasks which makes every day different, which I love!

SOPHIE BARRACLOUGH SENIOR MARKETING SPECIALIST

9 YEARS AT UTMOST

Having a degree in Marketing and wanting to develop my career in that area was one of the reasons for choosing to work at the company. I initially joined the New Business team as at the time there were no roles in Marketing, but saw it as an opportunity to get my foot in the door.

My time in that team was invaluable and the people were amazing, but I knew I needed to make that step into Marketing when the opportunity arose. I’ve been with the team now for nearly 8 years and have worked my way up to become a Senior Marketing Specialist. The company has also paid for me to do a leadership programme and further professional qualifications in Marketing, which resulted in me becoming a Chartered Marketer last year.

I’m also Head of Utmost Community, a group that aims to make a positive impact not only in the community in which we live but also the community in which we work, through wellbeing, ESG, charity, volunteering and staff appreciation, which I absolutely love!

What recruiters want

For the best chances of being hired for a job you want. Here are some dos that you should consider.

No idea what you want to do?

Try out different things. Take your time. You are likely to be working a long time as life expectancy for most people extends — some of you will live to be over 100, while the age at which you might receive a pension will recede. Register with a temp agency and do a few short-term contracts in different companies to get a sense of what you enjoy — and what you don’t.

Didn’t get the job you went for?

If you do know what you want, there is no need to despair when you don’t get in through the front door. You didn’t make the graduate training scheme, it can be soul-destroying applying for grad scheme after grad scheme, only to get nowhere.

Try for smaller organisations in the same industry, and try for different routes in. For instance, a starter role in internal auditing reviews all elements of a business and gives you a bird’s-eye view — so you can decide which bit you really want to work in.

Try for a job in the company you want to work for, even if it is something you never thought of doing. Call the HR department and ask which temp agency they use, then register there. It is easier to make a move from the inside.

The two-year rule

Your early, permanent jobs need to show you can take responsibility and stick at things. If you do get a permanent, career-shaping job, you should ideally stick it out for two years. Of course, this does not apply to stacking shelves or working behind a bar — or indeed any job where you are truly miserable. But two years is enough time to show future employers you are reliable.

Build a network

Everywhere you study, and everywhere you work, you should cultivate at least one person who you will always stay in touch with and can look to for a reference. This is your “social capital” and will help you for your whole career. Networks are not just something you build — you also need to maintain and to mobilise them.

Once a year — the start of a new year is good for this — write to them all and let them know how the past 12 months has been for you.

Become financially literate

The ability to understand and even discuss the finances of the company you are trying to join will always help at interview. There are some great online courses to help you get to grips with company finances, whatever you studied before.

A favourite are those run by Financetalking.com, which has courses for every level of non-financial beginner — including a 20 minute “coffee break” course (learn something useful in the time it takes to drink a cup of coffee), called “How to analyse a company”.

Your job-hunting ‘agents’

Finally, have you told people you are looking for a job? Write to everyone you know and explain what you are looking for, and attach your CV. It will only take one of them to know of an opening somewhere and you could be finding your dream job.

The best of all worlds

We’d be forgiven for thinking that in life, you can’t have it all. Somewhere down the line sacrifices need to be made to achieve what you’re striving for. But it doesn’t need to be like that.

What if you want a high-flying career without having to leave the island?

What if you want a degree-level qualification without the hefty student debt?

What if you want to start a family without putting your career on hold?

Turn those “what ifs” into reality with a career at KPMG in the Crown Dependencies.

A culture of thriving

We know that island life is uniquely special. With offices in the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey, safe communities, short commutes, and long summers on the beach are a way of life. The quality of life here is unparalleled and there’s no need to leave the island to achieve your career goals.

Take trainee Audit Assistant Gabrielle Divall, for example. Rather than go to university, she chose to stay in the Isle of Man to pursue a career in accounting.

“I was nervous coming straight from school, thinking I was not mature or experienced enough for the role I had applied for. However, I soon left those fears behind. The KPMG trainee system meant that I was part of a large intake with great people who made me feel welcome. I have achieved far more than I thought I could in 18 months, having just four more exams left until being an ACA exam qualified accountant”, says Gabrielle.

“I feel like I’ve been given opportunities to grow and to continue growing as an individual with KPMG through regular training,

responsibilities and networking, which I feel incredibly lucky to have had the option to do. The opportunity is there for school leavers on-island, my advice would be to take it!”

For Gabrielle, it made sense to stay put and work towards her professional qualifications, rather than be plunged into student debt by pursuing an undergraduate degree.

While hearsay tells us how a university education is often the best route to a fulfilling life and career, at KPMG we take pride in giving our people a viable and often more fruitful alternative.

Our Head of People, Lynsey Harris describes how new trainees can receive the best of all worlds when they join us.

“We cover study and exam fees for all our trainees – be they in audit, tax, or advisory”, says Lynsey.

“We have a culture at KPMG of enabling our people to learn for a lifetime, so we’re happy to provide that balance of learning whilst earning and still having the time to enjoy island life to the full”.

Our people’s wellbeing is as important to us as it is to them. So we make sure to provide them with the resources they need to be able to thrive with us.

A flexible approach

But not everyone thrives in the same way. As individuals we all have our own unique circumstances to consider. It’s impossible to fit us all into the same box, though some employers may try.

At KPMG, we encourage our people – via our Intelligent Working policy – to have those conversations with

us and work out the most mutually beneficial way to approach their job.

Be that through the option to work from home for two days a week – or more if approved. Or the possibility to work more remotely if your circumstances change.

Becoming a new parent – for example – is often considered one of those life events which inevitably puts your career on hold.

But we don’t see it that way.

Katie Kneale is a Senior Tax Manager in our Isle of Man office, and the parent of a two-year-old. She describes how our Intelligent Working policy allows her the time to care for her daughter, without having to give up her career ambitions.

“Under our Intelligent Working policy, I have been able to flex the hours and days that I work to fit around caring for my daughter. With both parents working that can be invaluable, especially as a new parent trying to fit around childcare. Those needs have changed over time as my daughter gets older and starts nursery, and KPMG have supported me throughout. Flexible working hours combined with the ability to work from home means that I can still give my best to KPMG and our clients, whilst making time for my family”.

We’re a people-oriented business at KPMG in the Crown Dependencies. We believe that by creating a culture that enables each of us to thrive – and giving them chance of a high quality of life – good things will happen.

SLEEP–NATURE’S SUPERPOWER

WordsMartinMalone SimplyNutritionPersonalTrainer/SportsNutritionist

Sleep is nature’s superpower. Consistently good sleep is the perfect partner to a healthy lifestyle, yet, so many of us struggle with our sleep.

Our bodies need good quality restorative sleep to grow and repair, while also boosting the immune system. From a psychological perspective, sleep is crucial for concentration, memory, response times and coordination. Poor sleep can result in an ongoing negative impact on our personal and professional lives and in some instances, when we consider things like slower response times, affect our safety too. From a nutritional perspective, we are more likely to make poor food choices when we are tired and if weight loss is the goal, we move less when we are tired and therefore, we burn less calories.

We all know how unpleasant it is to be tired and not able to sleep and we all have the occasional bad night’s sleep. We can usually put it down to a particular cause but then we recover with a great night’s sleep and life goes. However, consistently poor sleep can be overwhelming and debilitating.

We need on average 7 to 8 hours quality sleep each night to ensure we remain healthy but if we are struggling to do that consistently, the mental and physical fatigue accumulates and it starts to affect all aspects of our lives, even our food choices.

72 HEALTH & NUTRITION

We all have a circadian rhythm (body clock), which is a natural, internal process that regulates the sleep–wake cycle and repeats every 24 hours. Therefore, one of the most important things to remember about good sleep is being consistent with your sleeping habits so it becomes a bedtime ritual. There are of course physical conditions and sleep disorders such as snoring, insomnia, sleep apnoea, periodic limb movements, narcolepsy and nightmares that may require professional help or medical interventions from a Somnologist (sleep Doctor) but if none of these apply to you, all is not lost.

Here are some of the things you can do to help you develop better sleeping habits:

Create a sleep schedule

Your body clock likes routine. By going to bed at the same time each evening and waking up at the same time every morning, you create a sleep schedule within our body. And while the idea of sleeping extra at the weekends seems like a great idea, it’s probably not because once your body adjusts to a consistent schedule it repays you with reliable sleep, night after night. So, if you do happen to have a late night and sleep a little longer than normal, try to get back to your normal sleeping pattern the next night.

Create a sleep ritual

A simple sleep ritual to transition

from day to sleep time can be as simple as reading a few pages of a paper book (not electronic). You should avoid looking at your phone or watching TV just before bed. The blue light omitted by these devices has a stimulating effect on a part of your brain called the ‘suprachiasmatic nucleus’ (SNC), which controls your body clock, releases cortisol and other hormones to wake you up. Phones, TVs etc. trigger the same response, which can interrupt your sleep patterns. At night time when it starts to get dark, your SNC triggers the release of melatonin to make you sleepy, so interrupting this process can have a negative impact on your sleep.

Exercise

People who exercise tend to sleep better. Aerobic activity such as brisk walking, jogging or cycling can have a fantastic impact on your sleep, especially when it comes to quality and duration. However, intense exercise in the evening shortly before bed may not be beneficial.

Stress and Sleep

People who are stressed or worried about something often tend to fall asleep but then wake during the night and struggle to get back to sleep. If this happens to you, don’t battle with your thoughts. It can be helpful if you just get up and break that negative thought cycle. Maybe have a warm drink and try to relax and rationalise your concerns. Writing them down can help. Don’t watch TV or look at your phone and when ready, go back to bed and try to get off to sleep again.

Avoid stimulants, alcohol and heavy meals before bed

Stimulants such coffee will either stop you from getting to sleep or reduce sleep quality. Large meals should be avoided just before bed but a light snack around 45 minutes before bed may help. Some people find alcohol helps them relax and get to sleep but this is outweighed by the negative effect it has on sleep quality. According to the Sleep Foundation, alcohol disrupts REM sleep (your dream state), which is an important part of a normal sleep cycle.

Audit your Bedroom

Try and use natural fibre bed clothes that promote air flow and breathability. Invest in comfortable pillows and replace them every 1 to 2 years. It’s also worth noting that the life expectancy of your mattress is about 8 years.

Your bedroom should be cool. The optimal temperature for sleep is about 18 degrees Celsius. Your bedroom should also be dark. Invest in blackout curtains or blinds. If you are able to wear a sleep mask, that can be really helpful. If noise is a problem for you, try using soft silicone earplugs.

If you have a TV in your bedroom, don’t watch it before sleep for the reason mentioned above (blue light). Or better still, don’t have a TV in your bedroom at all. And for my last sleep tip - Try sleeping naked. Sleep research shows that sleeping naked improves sleep quality and it may even improve your sex life!
