ARE YOU THE NEXT MANX BARD? //ISLAND-WIDE// Are you a poet? Are you over 18? Would you like to be the next Manx Bard?

www.manxnationalheritage.com

The title of Manx Bard was awarded for the first time in 2014, posthumously to our national poet, TE Brown. Now the search is on for the first living Manx Bard. More details about this exciting new cultural initiative, supported by the Isle of Man Arts Council, and what you need to do to enter are available online.

Much is said by many people about how important the beauty and wildness of this Island is, not just for those who live here but for visitors too. But even beauty and wildness needs a helping hand. You can’t have missed the shocking decimation of the plantations and some glens by larch disease, or the arguments about whether off-road vehicles ‘ruin’ the uplands for walkers. The government and statutory bodies are doing their best to counteract and control these – but as we all know, money is tight and there are, some would say, more pressing uses for our taxes and it often comes down to individuals and charities to continue to do their bit. Preserving the Manx Countryside isn’t just about keeping what we’ve already got, it’s about leaving a legacy for generations to come, and the Society for the Preservation of the Manx Countryside and Environment can play a part in that. As a Manx Charity the SPMCE has been around for many years, but you might not even have heard of it. You might not know that it has worked with Beach Buddies to provide their bins, local schools to take pupils to the wildlife park, Men In Sheds to provide bird boxes for schools and old peoples’ homes, a nursery to cultivate a native Manx Orchid, and many other projects. But it doesn’t have to stop there. Is there something you’d like to do but can’t afford to progress by yourself without significant fund raising? One more thing you might not know about the SPMCE is that it can provide funding for environmental projects that will make a difference now and a huge difference in the future. So, if you have a great idea – as small as a ‘bee friendly garden’ or as large as planting an acre of native trees - but lack the funding to go ahead, you could do worse than get in touch with the SPMCE by contacting its Chairman John Faragher by emailing: manxfaragher@ yahoo.com The next SPMCE project could be yours.
