Gallery B612's Story Initially founded in mid 2020 under Prince and Fox, LLC, Gallery B612 aspires to be a gathering place for artists, dancers, fashion designers and creatives from all walks of life. To this date, the gallery has featured a Solo Exhibition from founder and curator, MiYoung Margolis and served as a gathering place and rehearsal space for MMDC and Dare to Dance.

Gallery B612 is a literary reference to Asteroid B612 in Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's book titled, The Little Prince. Gallery B612 is our "art planet," our gallery and studio, in the Seattle SODO neighborhood.

We believe it's important to provide space for artist to share their voice in a physical representation where others can view and discuss the pieces as well as mingle with others in our community. In our modern American world, there are less and less public spaces for people to spend their free time. Here, we will hope to provide safety and connection for the Seattle community.

At Gallery B612, you can find original works of MiYoung Margolis, as well as juried exhibitions of work by local and international artists.

Youth Art Competition November 9th - December 16th, 2023 On November 28th, 2023, Gallery B612 held their dedicated Artist Reception for the Youth Art Competition celebrating the works of 19 youth artists and featuring one youth pianist.

The artists and their parents/guardians were able to attend the reception and connect with the fellow art community of local artists, art collectors, and friends alike while simultaneously showing the Youth Art Competition.

My name is Abbie Ahn and I currently attend Issaquah High School as a sophomore. I enjoy art but also spend much of my free time figure skating, reading, or watching movies. I like to pursue topics that interest me and am always trying to learn more.

Abbie Ahn Artist Statement

From when I could barely walk, I was encouraged to draw and paint as I desired. My parents would hang up crisp white stock paper on the wall, put a crayon into my hand, and applaud when I presented my newest masterpiece. There are photos of me drawing in the bathtub with soap that doubled as paint, pushing dried beans across a small tray to create faces, and scribbling on my arms with a sharpie. As a child, and now, I find solace in art, whether it be paintings, photographs, or movies. Art, specifically visual art, provides me with a sense of self-expression that I cannot write down or speak.

I find inspiration through the works of people like Paula Rego, who skillfully created a set of pastel drawings titled, “The Abortion Pastels”, to convince the Portuguese government to loosen up abortion restrictions. She has inspired me to put deeper meaning behind my paintings and possible societal issues I feel strongly about. My art has also been deeply influenced by photographers like Sebastião Salgado and Vivian Maier, who candidly capture the world around us. I’m drawn to the joy-filled sculptures of American artist Nick Cave; whose art allows you to ascend into parallel universes. Through the wide variety of influences that impact my art, I believe that it effectively allows me to portray my identity. I hope that I can share my art with people everywhere and hope that my art may have the same effect that the art of others has had on me.

Ignorance (2023) 20 x 14 inches, Digital

As ocean levels continue to rise, the impact on our world becomes greater and greater. Even as rising water levels continue to destroy homes and lives, people still seem to stay ignorant of such a big problem. As a result, the problem continues to expand, maybe even one day cementing the world in a dystopian future. To portray ignorance, I depicted an old man, doing something he would probably do every day, in a not-so-ordinary world.

While he floats through the ocean on his bench, he stays oblivious to the world drowning around him. With things like trash, a rubber tire, and a paddle in the foreground, it seems that he has accepted the way of life and doesn’t care anymore. I hope that people will understand how big of a threat climate change poses to the world and that people will work towards solving it.

I was at Starbucks and saw a girl waiting in line. She was staring constantly at something, and I followed her eyes and saw a beautiful sunset starting to appear. I wondered what she was thinking. I hope people can appreciate the little things because those little things may be helpful one day.

Looking Into My Future (2023) Acrylic, 14 x 11 inches This piece of art has lots of meaning to it. One of the most important meanings to it is that small things can be important. When I carefully looked at the finished piece, I saw that she was smiling. So, I thought of reasons why she would smile. the first reason that popped into my mind was small things can be important. So, this is why I named this piece looking into my future.

Artist Statement I’ve been in art class out of school since 2022. I have won 2 top ten awards this year. Both of them were in the same competition but just in different seasons. I was honestly really happy when I won because that was my first and my second art contest I’ve ever done. I was very proud of myself. I hope I build on throughout the year!

Hi, I'm Tina, a ninth-grade high school student with a deep love for art. It's been my driving force and creative outlet for as long as I can remember. My art is a way for me to convey emotions and connect with others, inviting them into the story behind each piece. I'm constantly exploring new techniques and excited to see where this creative journey will lead me.

The Butcher Digital 20 x 16 inches In my art "The Butcher," I played with light and shadow in the digital medium. I paid close attention to details, adding a tactile feel to the digital canvas. The contrast between light and dark brings a sense of tension, suggesting a hidden story behind the art. This piece reflects my aim to evoke emotion and provoke thought through digital art, leaving a lasting impression on viewers.

Artist Statement As a student, art is my sanctuary—a realm where I can freely explore my thoughts, emotions, and observations. Through each stroke of the brush, I seek to convey the essence of my experiences and interpretations of the world. It is a privilege to share this evolving narrative with others, inviting them to witness my artistic journey.

Alyssa Choi is currently a freshman attending Newport High School. Her interest in art started at a young age with her understanding and passion for art growing day by day. Throughout middle school, her love for acrylic has expanded along with appreciation for the art. Alyssa’s main mediums are acrylic, charcoal, and digital art. Alyssa is constantly learning new skills and she is finding ways to improve her artwork.

Lost In Despair (2023) Acrylic 20 x 16 Lost in Despair is a piece created in efforts to help represent and give understanding to those going through losses. The girl in the painting was in mourning as she had recently lost her father. However, she hadn’t realized the rooster looking over her was her father in spirit.

Roosters represent prosperity and comfort and in the painting reminds those in a time of loss, that their loved ones are still looking over them.

Artist Statement

Art has been involved in my life since I was a toddler, starting with soft pastel. As each day went by I felt more excited to create a new piece that was “my work”. However, as I started to grow into a tween, I started to lose passion and love for art in general. It had felt so repetitive to me: going to the studio, picking a picture, and copying it. My whole life I had only experimented with soft pastel and that was getting boring to me. As my endeavors in art slowly came to a halt, I had no longer loved the form the way I had in the past.

This was until I was introduced to acrylic and different art forms.

My passion was quickly reignited, and I fell in love with the new and different forms. The uniqueness of each form that could all be categorized under the title mediums in art had fascinated me. I truly hope that artists who are struggling to discover their art for this form can explore different mediums in hopes of finding one they match.

Not only that, but even though my art has flaws and mistakes, I will always be proud of the different pieces I accomplish as it serves as a marker in my learning.

I am currently a junior in high school who is fascinated by the world of art. Since 7th grade, I have enveloped myself in creating artwork. I especially like looking at nature art pieces and simply looking at the world around me for things that I can use as inspirations for future projects.

Tropic In The City (2023) Acrylic on canvas 20 x 16 inches

In this art piece, I captured something I see everyday and feel are under appreciated by our society, construction workers. Everywhere I go, I see them outside, battling the scorching heat and braving the stabbing cold. This art piece’s purpose is to show us the unsung heroes of the world, those who keep out cities and towns running, repairing and maintaining the places we go everyday so that we can live a life without fear of our cities collapsing. It shows us the beauty and hard work of those who we see everyday in our lives and pays respect to them for the work they have done in our lives.

Artist Statement

Ever since I was a little boy, I have seen the world as a beautiful place. Everywhere I looked, I saw the deep intricacy of the scenes around me. Yet such overwhelming feelings were often left contained in myself, with no way to express them. Thats where art, for me, comes in. It allows for me to express many things, especially my feelings. It lets me show others details of our world that they may have missed. It allows for me to share with others what this massive world has to offer. Such things are what let me enjoy art and appreciate the process in which it is created.

My name is Suhhee Choi, I am thirteen years old, and I was born on October 30th, 2009. I currently attend Tyee Middle School as an eighth-grade student. I was very interested in art as a child and wish to learn more about it and explore every technique used in art. I hope to be a character designer one day for a show or game. My current interests are singing, drawing, and literature.

Happy Heart (2023) Mixed media drawing 11 x 7.5 inches I drew this art piece because I always thought that sometimes you feed lies to your own heart just to make yourself feel better, but in the end, you're only damaging yourself.

Artist Statement I am still exploring different art styles, and I am trying to find my own unique art style. Yet, I usually enjoy drawing dark themed artworks, for example, it gives a sad/scary feeling, a dark drawing with meanings behind it. Another art style I enjoy is drawing things related to somewhat of a fantasy world. It avoids facing reality and only focuses on things that one wishes to fulfill. Those drawings usually cut out the negativity of a full picture and only show the things someone would want to see.

Rachel Han is a junior at Newport High School with a passion for anything cozy and creative. She enjoys crocheting sweaters, painting, and cooking with whatever ingredients she has on hand, among other things. She has always found that art can be a vehicle to cope with stress and express things that might be hard to express with words, as she is often stressed out from mountains of schoolwork, but hopes that she can give viewers a feeling of coziness from her art.

Little Bird (2022) Digital Painting 12 x 16 inches Amidst the relentless pace of modern life, I find myself yearning to rekindle the innocence of my childhood, free from the overwhelming burdens that often seem to dictate my existence. I often find solace in envisioning a slower, more deliberate way of living, reminiscent of the tender cultivation and nurturing on a tranquil farm. This painting portrays a tender moment, where I delicately cradle an egg, symbolizing the delicate and untainted essence of my past self that I frequently long to preserve. It serves as a representation of the environment I aspire to cultivate, a sanctuary where I can slow down and cultivate a heightened awareness of my being and surroundings, despite the relentless pace of reality.

Through this artwork, my intention is to evoke a profound sense of comfort and innocence, reminding viewers of the importance of embracing a deliberate, unhurried approach to life, one that nurtures and cherishes our innermost selves. It serves as a gentle encouragement, inviting others to embrace the tranquility and intentionality necessary for fostering personal growth and self-awareness.

Artist Statement As a naturally reserved individual, I've always found solace in expressing my innermost thoughts through the language of art. With a rich interplay of colors, metaphors, and visual narratives, my work serves as a medium to unravel the complexities of my mind onto the canvas. My art aims to offer viewers a profound insight into my persona and life experiences, providing a unique lens through which they can perceive the world.

In my digital paintings, I harness textures and harmonious hues to authentically depict the intricate subtleties of my mind and weave compelling tales about the ordinary yet often overlooked facets of our surroundings. Through art, I hope to help those in our community in further noticing and hearing the subtle yet impactful voices of the people around us and in being more open to different perspectives, while showing sides of myself that may otherwise go unnoticed.

Art has splattered the timeline of my life, each droplet of paint articulate and meaningful. From sketches of dragons made by markers that make my paper bleed with the innocence of a toddler, to the smooth tip of a stylus matted with a sheet of mystery; my pencil’s strokes of honesty have twirled around my head for my entire life. Determined, hopeful, and loose, I try my best to let both my strengths and impurities shine through my canvas and back through the viewer’s screen. I have used art as a way to bond closer to the silliest of friends, and prove myself worthy to teachers that seem to have fangs the size of skyscrapers shining with a neon-green gloss. The idea that a story filled with imagination and immense-detail can be put onto a canvas, and interpreted countless different ways by each person that sees it. My motivation to continue art stems from my desire to offer support and comfort through the freedom and freshness of art.

Fish Bowl (2023) Soft Pastel, 16 x 12 inches Art is important to me because it allows me to express my thoughts and emotions in a way in which reality would not provide the tools and scenes to visualize exactly what I imagine. I enjoy observing art, listening to music, and hearing poetry that deeply connects and relates to how I feel, and through my art, my goal is to offer that same relatability and bond that I find comfort in. I also am intrigued by the rule-bending and supernatural aspects that the world of art offers and am constantly trying to grasp the crazy ideas that could only be shown through the artistic lens.

Artist Statement Now that I am starting High School, I constantly yearn for the familiarity and comfort that Middle School has established within me. This piece is heavily inspired by the feeling of an eerie novelty that I try to express through the uncomfortable scene of goldfish being eaten from a glass. The sign pointing in opposite directions, one towards High School, and the other to the “Community Beach House” represents how I wish I could carry the close bonds I had with my classmates in Middle School and transfer that same feeling over to High School. The title “Fish Bowl” is also a metaphor for how I relate to a goldfish wanting to go back to the ocean as I long to feel the same warmth I experienced in Middle School.

Currently in her junior year of high school, Jaimie enjoys drawing and telling stories. Aside from art, she spends her time on the mock trial team and doing musical theatre; in short she loves to talk. If not those activities she can be found blasting music and taking copious amounts of pictures of her dog (18,000+ photos and counting).

Fabrication (2023) Digital Painting 20 x 16 inches Sometimes it feels like I make my ethnicity too big of a part of my personality. It seems performative, like I’m just putting on an outfit, even though I try so hard to connect with this part of me. Something that I often ponder is how I’d be different if I were more in touch with my culture. As someone who enjoys folktales, hearing stories about dragons and princesses in flowing hanbok always help to spark my imagination, and lead me to dreaming up a world in my head full of culture where I’m even better in touch with that side of me. I used the colors of the background to give it a mystical fairytale feel, and dressed myself up in fabrics that help me feel more connected.

Artist Statement

For as long as I can remember, drawing and telling stories have been two of my favorite hobbies, and now each one fuels the other. It sounds a little strange, but a goal in life that I have is to make someone cry with my art. I want to be able to express emotions through the stories I tell with my art. Art is the best way for me to articulate these stories and feelings I want to share because it’s expressive beyond what words can do. It’s a way to spread your own personal ideas but also have others reflect on their own lives through it. Art is personal to everyone who views it, and I hope to make a lasting impact on others by spreading these emotions through art. We’re all made up of stories, and everyone has at least one story that has changed them as a person; I know I have several.

My dream is to create one of those life changing stories.

Kaylee Kim, 11-Year-Old girl and started playing the violin and drawing at a young age. Kaylee’s ultimate goal is to inspire others to see the beauty in the world around them and to never stop chasing their dreams.

The Wind of the Day (2023) Acrylic and color pencils on paper, 11 x 14 inches The main part about this artwork is that the two girls are standing together looking at the beautiful sky and having fun and the girl who’s wearing the glasses represents that all of the bliss comes out as wind and the people in the background come together to make happiness around us.

Artist Statement Artwork inspires me to draw what I imagine and it allows me to enjoy feeling it in my drawing. My favorite part of art is sketching. I like to sketch people and nature around us and show other people to make their day happier. Lastly I have a very creative mind so I can imagine anything and I can draw it in life.

Sophia Kleven is an artist based in Bellevue working in acrylic paint. Born in 2009, she takes inspirations from the impressionists such as Monet and post-impressionists including Van Gogh applying the techniques of bold paint strokes and an abundance of colors. From this, she explores ideas of the experiences of growing up with a large family.

Sophia Kleven Artist Statement Blank canvases are an improper representation of life.

From the warmth of the sun, coolness of the rain, or the noise of people in houses and on the streets, there is always activity. I have a large family, living with four siblings where this is always the case, the abundance of activity. I create my work from my room where I can always hear my family chattering outside. My work emulates the positive and negative experiences that are created when you have a large family.

Dancers in Colored Wear (2023) Acrylic, 11 x 14 inches

Dancers in Colored Wear depicts a lively and full ballroom scene. Each dancer is wearing a unique piece of clothing that doesn't perfectly match any other dancer. The ballroom itself is large with vibrant colors in a stained-glass window. This is a representation of the many unique skill sets and achievements of everyone in a large family with each person bringing their own experiences and talents to the family combine to create balance and diversity as represented with the window. All of the dancers are all looking at a different dancer creating a circular effect showcasing how none of them see what they themselves are wearing, only marveling at what someone else is.

When a person is surrounded by difference in style or skill sets it can be very easy to lose yourself in comparison. The constant thoughts of "why can't I do what they do?" or "They're so good at this, why am I so terrible?" can be ever present when surrounded by the people you compare yourself too constantly as those people are your own family. From this, it can be hard to look objectively at yourself and your skill sets and realize what you are capable of.

Yet, even then the people around you recognize it, a comforting feeling as you realize that you are capable and appreciated by those around you.

My name is Jane Lee, I’m 12 years old and currently in 7th grade. I love doing semi-realism and realism, and my favorite medium is probably acrylic, charcoal, or pencil drawing. I’ve done many previous artworks such as 3 charcoal portraits of myself, one acrylic portrait, and many others. I love how you can be so creative and innovative with art and how art connects everyone together.

Other than painting and drawing, some of my hobbies are horseback riding, rock climbing, and debating in my free time, and my favorite foods are pasta and Korean cuisine.

Jane Lee Artist Statement In my artwork, I drew an old man reading a book through his old-timey glasses, next to a glass of wine. As mentioned below, I wanted to convey a nostalgic atmosphere (hence the name) so I included a book as the most sentimental memory I can think of is me curled up on a chair reading a book. Perhaps, as the old man is reading, he is remembering some childhood reminiscences. In my painting, there isn’t a set story line, so the viewer is free to imagine what the old man is thinking about. I hope you enjoy this painting as much as I do.

Nostalgia (2023) Acrylic, 12 x 16 inches To make this painting, I picked out colors that I felt would match the colors of the reference picture (in this case, blues and teals, browns, etc). I sketched out a rough draft of the overall shape that I wanted to draw. I use a special technique called underpainting, where I mark out the darkest values so it’ll be easier to see where I’ll actually apply paint. Then, I mix and match colors and start painting. After that, I applied the final details (my favorite part). I put a lot of thought into my artwork- I added props such as a glass of wine and a book to give a homey, cozy feeling to this art piece. When creating this art piece, I wanted to give it a wistful aura, so I included lots of warm browns as well.

Jinho (Jacob) Lee is a junior at Lake Washington High School and a growing artist. During his free time, he has a wide selection of hobbies to do, from playing basketball with his friends, buying New York times bestseller books just to awe the beauty of the book covers, and going to friends' house to play video games for straight 3 hours. Among all those hobbies, his favorite one is drawing either through using iPad or canvas because he believes that the art has power to comfort people.

Vacation (2023) Acrylic, 20 x 16 inches Vacation is something that all children enjoy; vacation not only provides a sense of comfort and enthusiasm to the kids, but also becomes part of their identity through shaping kids' childhood memories that they will cherish throughout their life. To me, drawing art is a form of vacation. Art energizes me when I am exhausted from social life and schoolwork, and it gives me time to reflect on myself and find better ways to manage my mental and physical health. No matter how happy or satisfied people are with their lives, they all go through period of hardships. Since the "actual vacation" is something that people cannot enjoy that often, I hope my art piece can heal people and provide a "temporary vacation" for them while they are enjoying my artwork.

Artist Statement In my art piece, I drew two children enjoying their time in the beach. I used vibrant colors and vivid textures to add splendor to the painting and visualize a sense of excitement in a meaningful way.

My name is Lily, I'm 14 years old, and am an 8th grader at Rosemont Middle School in Portland, OR. I've been interested in drawing and painting from an early age. I have studied privately with classical artist Randall Vemer in Portland OR, and taken several classes at Oregon School of Art. In 2022 I participated in a mural project for a summer art camp in which a mural of Sacagawea was acquired by the Oregon Historical Society.

My Monet (2022) Oil, 36 x 24 inches I love painting women in beautiful dresses; and why I also like fashion drawing.

This work is inspired by Monet who I love. I also got to paint a sunny landscape, and the wind was fun to capture in the woman's shawl and even the grasses waving in the wind!

Artist Statement This is a large painting inspired by Monet; one of my favorite Impressionist painters. I created this painting by doing a charcoal drawing on canvas, then under painted in brown and white acrylic, and then added vibrant colors in oils. I wanted to show it was a very windy day with the woman's shawl blowing in the wind, along with the grasses in the foreground!

Hello, my name is Lois Pyeun, 16 years old. I have been painting and drawing since I was a kid and it has been an integral part of my life. To me, art was always a form of healing, and I enjoyed it because it helps me feel relieved and express my thoughts that I can’t completely verbalize. Art is something I want to use to communicate the deeper meanings of my life. I hope my art also connects to the audience, and I hope to share my vision to all.

I Didn’t Do That (2023) Digital, 20 x 16 inches I wanted to create my piece to be metaphorical in a way, with symbolism to represent what I was thinking. I used the idea of the slaughter of a pig at a distance to create the idea of emotional detachment that we may have to such a scene. I also wanted to depict the inner turmoil of the girl through body language instead of portraying her with obvious emotion. And through the use of the darker colors and muted tones, I wanted to create a melancholy and somber expression to encourage reader to explore the deeper themes I want to convey.

Artist Statement In this artwork, the girl embodies the role of a bystander. Despite her cold exterior, her inner guilt pushes her to confront the scene she initially wanted to ignore. She turns away from the sight of the hanging pig, reflecting a mindset where people feel detached from a situation because they do not think they are directly involved. But as her hand pushes her back, the girl feels a sense of guilt or responsibility, deep down.

The painting represents the struggle between wanting to ignore others’ distressing situations and the empathy that pushes us to help and intervene.

My name is Evie Pyeun and I am a 13 year old. Ever since I was a child I've loved drawing and my mother encouraged me to keep doing art. I draw to make memories and capture small moments in our lives.

Laughter of Youth (2023) 11 x 17 inches, charcoal on paper My artwork portrays two of my close friends reuniting and laughing as they embrace.

My piece attempts to capture the raw joy felt when we are with our loved ones and the unmistakable depth of these feelings.This Charcoal drawing was meant to show how even without color emotions can be clearly carried through, for every line on their face and every crease of a smile can touch you even without vivid colors.

Artist Statement My piece attempts to capture the raw joy felt when we are with our loved ones and the unmistakable depth of these feelings. Their smiles have lit up the room with their warmth and genuinity in a way I hope could touch you. As a teenager who has yet to see much of the world, my world is black and white but even as I am inexperienced with the truth of the world, happiness is something I have known and seen.

I do not need to know the true colors of the world around me to know happiness.

Caileen is an artist from Seattle, Washington, and has studied art for 8 years.

Despite beginning her art studies with pastel and watercolor, her favorite mediums now are digital art, colored pencil, and graphite. She has also studied traditional Chinese gouache and ink paintings. Aside from drawing and painting, she enjoys violin, piano, and dance.

Late Night Snack (2023) 16 x 20 inches, Digital Painting This piece depicts my sister in a field of grass, biting on a lamb skewer under a slightly dark and cloudy sky. Contrasting the gloomy and dreary setting, the lighting on the subject is both bright and warm, representing the light and warmth brought by the "late-night snack."

Artist Statement I often eat at odd times. Scooping the last bits of rice out of my thermos as fast as I can on the car before school, snacking on whatever Ziploc bagged fruit and crackers that are in my backpack during class, or indulging in some late-night leftovers after an exhausting day. In the midst of extracurriculars, classes, clubs, sports, and school activities that have me everywhere at once throughout the day, my irregular eating habits reflect the constant chaos of my schedule.

But despite being surrounded by constant stress, the midnight feasts I have with my siblings or by myself are a small but significant light in my life. Combating exhaustion with a skewer, some watermelon cubes, or some leftover pizza at 11PM, I can somehow always get myself up and going to finish my last homework assignment, pull myself out of a unproductive rut, or go downstairs and clean my kitchen when motivated with a late-night snack. No matter the timing or location—whether it be in my room, the car, or a dark and cloudy field—a bit of home-cooked food can always brighten up my day.

I am constantly immersed in the world of artistic exploration, with my mind ceaselessly teeming with ideas for new pieces. As a young artist growing up China and studying in a Catholic high school in Bellevue, Yuxi pays particular attention to seemingly ordinary details in real life and makes it to her canvas.

The Adult Gaze (2023) 20 x 16 inches Acrylic An overwhelmingly huge reddish face, a little bit crossed-eyed, looks down at a child waiting for the judgment. The dramatic contrast between a huge face and the small back of a child highlights the helplessness and hence the tenseness between the two. Rough texture with small brush strokes and opposite colors express the imagined fear from the condescending gaze from an adult. Soft texture used in the child draws viewers back to the reality.

Artist Statement Influenced by artists like Jason Anderson, a British artist who uses bold colors and layers of paints to create abstract images, Francisco Badilla, who paint contemperoray realistic art, and Salvador Dalí, who painted the famous melting clocks, i love to explore with colors and shapes in a realistic manner, but I would also add some creative element from my imagination. My works can connect every object to human experiences. my works are full of imagination, critical reflection on human conditions, and inspirations from different cultures around the world. My adventurous spirit is also apparent in my active exploration of different mediums such as soft pastels, Acrylic paintings, and digital painting.
