THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME was first presented by the National Theatre, London at the Cottesloe Theatre on August 2nd 2012 and transferred to the Gielgud Theatre, West End, London on March 12th 2013. The Play opened in the USA at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre on October 5th 2014.
This Play is presented by kind permission of Warner Bros. Entertainment. THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME is presented by special arrangement with Broadway Licensing, LLC, servicing the Dramatists Play Service collection. (www.dramatists.com)
Welcome to Gallery 7 Theatre and to our final production of our 33rd “Heart of Community” Theatre season. This past year, we have shared with you stories about the ups and downs of living in community. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time brilliantly reflects this theme, making it the perfect capstone to another exciting year of compelling theatre here at G7. It’s a powerful story of a young boy trying to find his place: in his family, in his neighbourhood and in the world at large. It’s a story of mystery, of self-discovery, of realising potential, of finding hope and of living with limitations. It’s also a highly theatrical story of healing and reconciliation - the kind of theatre that really excites me.
This show, based on the novel of the same name, was a hit on London’s West End and on Broadway. It won 7 Obie Awards including Best New Play and the Tony Award for Best Play. I hope you find this play as special as the critics, theatre fans and us here at G7 do.
A word about language: you will notice that we have left some of the strong and coarse language in the play. We don’t take this decision lightly. We believe that for theatre to have maximum positive impact on our lives, we need to portray characters and their stories as honestly and as truthfully as possible. Sometimes, this means characters say things that offend us or make us uncomfortable. We are not endorsing said language. Rather, our intention is to look beyond the superficial nature of language to understand the heart, soul and mind of the characters. Through this, we hope to gain understanding, empathy and the ability to engage people where they are at in important ways.
As I already alluded to, this is our last show of the season. We’re going to take a short break over the summer, regroup, do some planning and then we’ll be back again in the fall with an all-new season of shows sure to entertain, inspire and challenge. Take a look at the exciting 2024-2025 “Under Pressure” playbill in this program or online at www.gallery7theatre.com and book your season subscriptions today!
In the meantime, thank you so much for being a part of our little G7 community. Best wishes for an outstanding summer and we’ll see you again this fall.
P.S. The steely-eyed among you will notice a slight change to my job title. This past spring, Gallery 7 Theatre took an important step in our strategic plan to build organisational capacity and ensure a bright future by expanding our senior management team. New Business & Operations Manager, Sara Mayfield, will be taking on the lion’s share of financial and logistical responsibilities moving forward, freeing me to focus more on big picture things and the stuff I love (and am trained) to do: programming and producing quality heart, soul and mind theatre. The new title reflects this new reality.
Ken Hildebrandt Executive/Artistic DirectorLand Acknowledgement
Gallery 7 Theatre’s mandate is to share stories that explore the relational, social, and spiritual aspects of the human experience with a vision towards hope, reconciliation, and redemption. In that spirit, we’d like to acknowledge we carry on our artistic endeavours on the traditional and unceded territory of the Sto:Lo people, Sema:th First Nation and Mathxwi First Nation and we are thankful for this opportunity. May there be healing and peace as we seek to build a stronger, respectful, and more unified community together.
Sometimes you are in the middle before you even know you’ve begun. You find yourself, trying to apply the rules you know to what is happening, but you are struggling to know if the rules you’ve pulled are working. If the rules will keep you from the lost feeling you have. Do these rules even apply to what is happening at the moment? Why do I have more questions than answers and this show hasn’t even started yet? Or has it already started and I’m behind?
Every time I would enter the rehearsal hall, or pick up the script, or sit at home, I found myself wondering how an audience would leave the show. I would ask myself, “Does this story even make sense?” But maybe this story doesn’t have to make literal sense. Maybe all it needs is Christopher. Maybe all it needs is one young boy we can watch and experience life with. A boy who in many ways is like us, and isn’t like us. A boy who is just trying to figure out life, its rules, how he fits in his community, how he can grow with and beyond his community, and how he can prove that he is more than the “rules” that have been placed upon him.
So, while you watch this “Curious Incident,” and wonder about dogs and night times, maybe suspend your rules about “existing” and “story” for a bit. Take a moment to live with Christopher, in his middle, his beginning and his end. Leave with more questions than you came with, or leave with no questions and all the answers. I don’t make the rules about what you see, and how you observe. But I would encourage you to talk about it. With your seatmate. With your neighbour. With someone

Abbotsford International Airshow Society – Sandra Bater & Dave Reith

If you would like to volunteer or contribute to our productions, please contact us at 604-504-5940 or email info@gallery7theatre.com.
Hayley Bamford (Set Designer) Hayley is currently completing her degree in production design at UFV. She has lived and breathed theatre her entire life. You can often find her all over the valley working as a technician or stage manager. Curious Incident has a special place in Hayley’s heart; It was the first show she did set design for in 2019. She was excited to come back to it and explore how she has changed as a designer. This is Hayley’s first show with Gallery 7, and she had a blast!
Vicki Bolan (Costume Designer) To Paraphrase Edith Head, "What a costume designer does is a cross between magic and camouflage. We create the illusion of changing the actors into what they are not. We ask the public to believe that every time they see a performer on the stage they become a different person."
Nigel Brooke (Lighting Designer) Nigel has designed lights for dozens of productions around the Lower Mainland, including Screwball Comedy, Ghost of a Chance and Cinderella for the Royal Canadian Theatre Company, where he is the resident lighting designer, Murder on the Orient Express, Snowbound and The Sound of Music for Gallery 7, and many more. He also occasionally performs and directs, appearing recently as Sir Rupert in Jeeves Intervenes for Gallery 7, and directing As You Like It for Shadows and Dreams.
Charlene Crawford (Director) Charlene holds a BA in Theatre from TWU which no longer offers this degree. She has spent the last 20 years stage managing, producing, designing, directing and acting. She last directed at Gallery 7 for Fiddler on the Roof. She just appeared on stage in the comedy Cheaters as Grace with Royal Canadian Theatre Company. Her next project will be moving to the middle of the country! All her love to her supportive partner and kiddos.
John Dawson (Ed Boone) John wants you to know that his name is not a prime number and neither is his last name, but his middle name is, but he does not use it, so it does not count. Both Ed and Boone are prime numbers. John has done 23 previous shows at Galley 7, which is also a prime number. He is grateful to Angelika for being his prime supporter. He hopes you are primed for an extraordinary theatre experience.
Stephen Elcheshen (Fight Coordinator) As one of the founding producers of Shadows And Dreams Theatre Co, Stephen can be found in the bandshell at Queen's Park every summer showing off his Shakespeare. Recent roles include Jaques in As You Like It (S&D); Arthur, Sir Bors, and half the other characters in Spamalot (White Rock); and Wooster
in Jeeves Intervenes (G7). His fight choreography was last seen here in Tale of Two Cities. As always, he'd like to thank his family for their love and support.
Marie Haak (Voice 6) It’s her Abbotsford debut! Three Hills Arts Academy was her acting domain, there she was in; Oliver Twist: The Musical, The Sound of Music (alongside the actor Erica Durance from Smallville), HMS Pinafore, Pirates of Penzance, Little Woman: The Musical, and Charlie Brown. She toured for 3 years with the Prairie High School Choir “His Singers”. A passion for performing arts was instilled in her by her parents and at times her family was called ‘The Neufeld Family Singers’. Her 4 kids and hubby are now her biggest fans.
Sheldon Jeans (Voice Two) A graduate of UFV, Sheldon's passion for theatre started in high school. Over the years he has worked on student and independent films, and appeared in the background of many films and TV shows shot in and around the Fraser Valley. This is Sheldon's 3rd project since returning to Gallery 7, and he's looking forward to more on stage and off.
Mia Joiner (Assistant Stage Manager) Mia is currently 15 years old and has recently found an interest in theatre after previously helping backstage with Miss Benett: Christmas at Pemberley, and The Sound of Music. She thanks everyone involved for supporting her newfound hobby and she hopes to continue volunteering with Gallery 7 in the future!
James Lam (Dialect Coach) James Xavier Lam began his acting career in 2000, in the West End. He trained with the National Theatre, holds distinctions from LAMDA (London Academy of Dramatic and Music Arts), and NODA (National Operatic and Drama Association), and worked as a resident actor for the BFI (British Film Institute) Academy. His most recent Canadian Theatre Credits include Ernest DeFarge, A Tale of Two Cities (G7), Christopher Wren, The Mousetrap (G7) amongst others. When not performing or coaching, James is likely found being begged by his toddlers to “just do your normal voice” when reading books to them.
Veda Maharaj (Sound Designer) Veda is a passionate young theatre technician who has a particular interest in design. A Langley Fine Arts graduate and current CapU Motion Picture student, they have thus far had the opportunity to collaborate in an array of productions with companies ranging from LLT to Leaping Thespians to Gallery 7, she has worked all across the lower mainland.
Rachel Mackenzie (Stage Manager) Rachel is delighted to be a part of this production!
Miranda Martin (Voice One) Miranda is a theatre enthusiast who has been performing for as long as she can remember. This season, she’s thrilled to be working with Gallery 7, and when she heard about the chance to audition for this show, she jumped at the opportunity. As a high school teacher, Miranda has taught the novel multiple times and felt an instant connection to the material. She’s also the director at Abbotsford Children’s Theatre. Miranda is excited to put her teaching into practice and show that the phrase “Those who can’t do, teach” is far from the truth.
Andrew Potts (Head of Construction) Andrew has manipulated 2x4s, plywood, and screws into theatre sets for several years. Other recent builds include Seussical (VTT), Sound of Music (G7), A Midsummer Night's Dream (SAMC), and Snowbound (G7). See some of his other designs and builds at www.handyandrew.ca/theatre-sets
Elizabeth Seaman (Siobhan) Elizabeth is so happy to be playing Siobhan! This is Elizabeth’s eighth show with Gallery 7. She hopes everyone enjoys the show as much as she does! Elizabeth was most recently seen on the G7 stage this season, as Sister Margaretta and Frau Zeller in The Sound of Music, and last season, as Lily in The Secret Garden. Some of her other past roles include Cindy Lou in Winter Wonderettes, Diana Barry in Anne of Green Gables: The Musical, and Marian Paroo in The Music Man.
Shannon Tauber (Props Designer) Shannon’s first show as Props Designer! They have a degree in Costume Studies from Dalhousie University (2021) and a degree in Theatre Acting from Douglas College (2016). Previous credits include: Costume and Hair & Make-Up Design for Snowbound, Hair and Make-up Design for Christmas at Pemberley and Tale of Two Cities, Costume Design for Re:Naissance Opera’s world premiere of Sanctuary and Storm, as well as Seamstress for the Canadian Opera Company.
Brenna Tinworth (Hair & Makeup Designer)
Brenna has been doing theatre for almost twelve years now. She has recently gotten into working backstage as well and has done a couple Gallery 7 shows in the past season such as Miss Bennett: Christmas at Pemberley and The Sound of Music. Brenna is currently in school for hairstyling and is excited to be designing hair and makeup for her first time. Enjoy the show!
Mackenna True (Assistant Stage Manager)
Mackenna is a full-time student at UFV with plans to teach high school theatre, english, and history
one day. She enjoys working alongside creative teams and is thankful to Gallery 7 for providing that for her and so many others.
Aryan Tuknayat (Voice Three) Aryan Tuknayat’s most recent experience on the stage was Gallery 7’s Snowbound as an Assistant Stage Manager and as an actor, University of the Fraser Valley’s Fall 2022 production Ghosting of Sumas Lake. He is a fond admirer of the concept of performing arts and is extremely passionate about acting and filmmaking. Aryan graduated in 2023 with his Bachelor’s degree in Computer Information Systems from UFV. Being a cinephile, Aryan likes to explore cinema from across the world. He also enjoys writing scripts and playing soccer.
Jay Tulip (Christopher) Jay has been doing theatre for 12 years, gaining an interest at a young age. He has been in many musicals ranging from Beauty and the Beast as Gaston, to The Addams Family, portraying Lucas. These musicals were performed with a previous theatre company that he graduated from once he turned 18. In his last year of high school, he played the part of Danny Zuko in Grease, and Seymour in Little Shop of Horrors. Jay also enjoys carpentry, animals, and watching movies. He hopes you enjoy the show!
Derek Ward-Hall (Voice Four) Derek is thrilled to be back working with Gallery 7. He was last on stage with G7 as Hercule Poirot in Murder on the Orient Express. Recently he had the pleasure to work with Opening Nite Theater in Mission for A Boat in a Tiger Suit.
Cara White (Judy) Cara's theatrical journey was initially sparked by an audition announcement in her church bulletin, leading to memorable roles like Hannah in TIC's Two from Galilee and the whimsical Mrs. Whatsit in A Wrinkle in Time at Gallery 7. When not playing pickleball, Cara loves adventuring on road trips with her husband, Chris, and occasionally her teenagers. Grateful for her family's unwavering support during rehearsals and performances, Cara's emotional journey in this role is illuminated by their love and encouragement.
Victoria Zator (Voice Five) Victoria has always had a love for theatre and acting ever since she was a little girl watching Phantom of the Opera with her family. She was an avid drama student throughout high school and after graduation in 2018 went to Vancouver Film School, studying acting. In her freetime, she enjoys spending time with family and curling up on the couch with a cup of tea and a good book. She recently played Lydia Wickham in Gallery 7's Miss Bennett: Christmas at Pemberley and she hopes you all enjoy the show!
