ANNOTAZIONI SU SYNTAX II

I miei dipinti implicano una superficie ottica ridotta basata su una forma materiale di pensiero. Uso segni costruttivi essenziali che suggeriscono variabili livelli di ambiguità. Questo può dare origine ad un paradosso di presenza e assenza e inoltre contempla una superficie che ad un tempo riflette e assorbe la luce. Il mio lavoro vuole testare i limiti del visivo e del non-visivo nel processo del vedere, come a sfidare il significato attraverso la descrizione.

Conosciuto soprattutto come scrittore e critico d’arte, ho anche portato avanti un percorso professionale di artista, esponendo le mie opere per più di quaranta anni. Nel 1970, ho iniziato a dipingere forme geometriche astratte quale forma di linguaggio visuale, mentre vivevo a Santa Barbara, in California. In questo periodo ho avuto l’occasione di conoscere il pittore hardedge John McLaughlin. Ero interessato ai limiti di quanto egli poteva ridurre la forma per ricavare spazio nel dipinto. Allo stesso tempo, nel mio lavoro stavo usando una scala minimalista ridotta attraverso una sorta di approccio costruttivista. All’epoca dipingevo con colori ad olio prima di passare alcuni anni dopo all’acrilico.

Negli anni ho mantenuto un approccio architettonico alla pittura, spesso lavorando in una forma di progressione sequenziale. Sebbene le opere siano concepite e dipinte in questo modo, io le presento in ordine diverso per dare al lavoro più varietà e vivacità. Adesso i miei dipinti sono relativamente piccoli. raramente superano le dimensioni di 70x100 cm. Mentre le forme dipinte con colori metallici e a grafite sono destinate a riflettere la luce, la terra d’ombra bruciata, l’ocra e il blu oltremare allo stesso tempo l’assorbono.

Nel 1992, divenni sempre più interessato a lavorare da un punto di vista orientale. Presi una pausa nel mio fare arte così da chairire la mia posizione quale pittore astratto. Paradossalmente, il concetto di arte

astratta non é di solito associato all’Oriente. I caratteri cinesi traducono astrazione occidentale per intendere “metafisico”. Io pensavo lo spazio in termini di vuoto (sunyata), e la luce come energia (qi). Decisi di ritornare alla modalità operativa che che avevo sviluppato dagli anni ‘70, quando dipingevo forme modulari usando la geometria e il colori rarefatti. Volevo che i miei nuovi dipinti funzionassero attraverso forma e luce, attraverso il riverbero e l’assorbimento immediato della luce.

In Syntax II, viene data enfasi alla modularità. Mentre la maggior parte delle opere sono dipinte attraverso una prospettiva sequenziale, i lavori sono installati secondo un ordine intuitivo. Questa mostra evidenzia il mio ritorno ad un approccio minimale e costruttivista della pittura. Ho selezionato opere sia su tela che su carta, dipinte tra il 2006 e il 2014. In questi lavori, trovo la sintassi o il significato non tanto nelle forme stesse, quanto nella relazione fra l’una all’altra. In ogni caso, il ruolo della luce é essenziale.

COMMENTS ON SYNTAX II

My paintings involve a reduced optical surface based on a material form of thought. I employ fundamental constructive signs that suggest variable levels of ambiguity. This may result in a paradox of presence and absence that further admits a surface that both reflects and absorbs light. My work intends to test the limits of the visual and the non-visual in the process of seeing as it defies meaning through description.

While I am known primarily as a writer and art critic, I have maintained a career as an exhibiting artist for more than forty years. In 1970, I began painting abstract geometric shapes as a form of visual language while living in southern California. During this time I had the occasion to meet the hardedge painter John McLaughlin. I was interested in the limits of how far he could reduce form in order to derive space in painting. At the time, I was using a reduced Minimalist scale in my work through a kind of Constructivist approach. I was painting with oils at the time before changing to acrylic a few years later.

Over the years I have retained an architectonic approach to painting, often working in a serial mode of progression. Although the paintings are conceived and painted in this manner, I want to present them differently to give the work more variety and buoyancy. Today my paintings are relatively small. They rarely exceed the dimensions of 30 x 40 inches. While the metallic and graphite forms are intended to reflect light, the burnt umber, ochre, and ultramarine absorb light at the same moment.

In 1992, I had become increasingly interested in working from an Eastern perspective. I took time off from making art in order to re-clarify my position as an abstract painter. Paradoxically, the concept of abstract art is not usually associated with the East. The Chinese characters translate Western abstraction to mean “metaphysical.� I thought of space in terms of the void (sunyata), and light in terms of energy (qi). I decided to return to a way of working from the 1970s when I was painting modular shapes using geometry

and reduced color. I wanted my new paintings to function through form and light, through the immediate reflection and absorption of light.

In Syntax II, the emphasis is given to modularity. While most of the work is painted from a serial point of view, the works are installed according to an intuitive sequence. This exhibition celebrates my return to a minimal and constructivist approach to painting. I have selected works on both canvas and paper, painted between 2006-2014. In these works, I find the syntax or meaning less in the forms themselves then in the relationship of the forms to one another. In any case, the play of light is essential,

Robert C. Morgan inizia la sua carriera nel 1970 come pittore astratto classico, con occasionali incursioni nell’arte concettuale e nella performance. Robert C. Morgan began his career in 1970 as an abstract classical painter, with occasional forays into conceptual and performance art. A close adherent of Taoist principles since the outset of his career, Morgan is interested in painting beyond language, that is, beyond the possibility of articulating what his forms are about.

He has shown at the ICA in Boston (1972), Artists Space (NYC), 1976, 1977, The Whitney Museum of American Art, 1976, Anthology Film Archives (NYC), White Box, and the Film Millennium (NYC). His photographs, visual books, paintings, and installations have been shown at White Columns (NYC), CEPA (Buffalo, NY), Erik Stark Gallery (NYC), Galerie Antoine Candau (Paris), McKissick Museum of Art (North Carolina), Ulrich Museum (Wichita, Kansas), Memorial Art Gallery (Rochester, NY), International Artists Museum (Lodz, Poland), Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago), 49the Biennale di Venezia (1999), Gallery Yaki Kornblat (Amsterdam), and Galerie 1900-2000 (Paris).

In April–May 2009, Morgan was given a two-gallery retrospective at the Bjorn Ressle Gallery (New York) and Sideshow Gallery (Brooklyn, NY), and in 2010 a second solo exhibition at Sideshow. In 2011, he presented earlier paintings at the John Davis Gallery in Hudson, New York. In 2012, he had a solo exhibition at Able Fine Art in Seoul, and in 2013, solo shows at Able Fine Art in New York, Creon, and the Rooster Gallery on the Lower East Side. This summer Morgan has a solo exhibition of recent small paintings and works on paper at the Galleria Il Ponte in Florence (Italy).

His work has been reviewed in The New York Times, Artforum, Art News, Art in America, artcritical.com, and Art Monthly (Korea). In 1987-1988, he was granted an NEA - Rockefeller Fellowship as an artist and an Artist’s Residency at the Clocktower, Institute of Urban Art and Resources (1988). His work is in many prominent collections.
