RENATO RANALDI - FUORIQUADRO - AUS DEM BILD Werner Meyer

Kunst ist eine Frage ihrer Bedeutung. Die Wahrnehmung und einen möglichen und hinreichend nahe gelegten Sinn interpretieren wir inspiriert aus den Bildmotiven. Und wo die Abstraktion und das Konzept des künstlerischen Prozesses Form und Farbe und dem Materialcharakter der Medien der Kunst wesentlichere Bedeutung zuspricht, spiegelt sich im Bild das künstlerische Denken als Handeln wider und als Reflexion und In-Frage-Stellen all dessen, was ein Kunstwerk ausmacht – das Material und die Idee und der Prozess der Metamorphose.

Will es fortschrittlich und innovativ sein, bringt das so angelegte Experiment das Kunstwerk an den Rand der akademischen Konventionen und der Kriterien, die gerade noch auf gute Kunst verwiesen haben. So verlegt sich das Bildgeschehen für den Maler Renato Ranaldi, der in der Tafelmalerei seinen Ausgangspunkt hat, an den Rand der Leinwand und jenseits des Rahmens als Horizont eines darstellenden Bildes. Das führt zu Kunstwerken, in denen es auch um Grundlagenforschung geht, in denen der Diskurs der Kunst selbst verhandelt wird, die Spannung zwischen Grenzen sprengender Avantgarde und kritischer Erprobung der Auflösung – denn in jeder Grenzüberschreitung ist auch der zauberhafte Moment eines neuen Anfangs zu vermuten, der eigene, unvermutete Sinn eines jeden einzelnen Werkes, das Bestand haben soll.

In der Serie der „Fuoriquadro“ hat Renato Ranaldi die Farbe und mithin das klassische Bildgeschehen aus dem Rahmen gemalt. Die geballte, verklumpte, gleichsam – sieht man es von der Geschichte der Malerei her – aus der Fläche implodierte Anhaftung der Farbe, das malerische und eigentlich plastische Geschehen des Bildgegenstandes Farbe am Rande des üblichen Spielfeldes der Malerei auf Leinwand kennzeichnet die neue und um-

fangreichste Serie des Künstlers. Das Atelier ist einmal mehr das alchimistische Laboratorium, in dem der Prozess eine Struktur und zugleich das Geheimnis und den Mythos der Verweigerung fortschreibt. Die Malerei scheint wie Daphne zu reagieren: Bevor sie der liebestolle Apoll mit dem Eros der Imagination als Bild auf der Leinwand in Besitz nimmt, entzieht sich die Malerei, konkret die Farbe, diesem Zugriff und verwandelt sich in ihre ursprünglich Natur, in die farbigen Klumpen Materie, die entweder aus der Fläche und den Geboten der zweidimensionalen Imagination in die Randlage geflüchtet sind oder es aus der Tube und von der Palette nur bis an den Rand der grundierten und auf Keilrahmen aufgespannten, jungfräulich unberührten Leinwand geschafft haben.

Ohne die Sinnlichkeit und unmittelbare Existenz der Kunstwerke zu übersehen, gilt es das Konzept, die These von der assoziativen Verbindung von leerer Leinwand und den Farbklumpen als reflexive Geste ernst zu nehmen.

Die jungfräuliche, nur grundierte Leinwand versteht sich als Symbol, als Projektionsfläche für das Gedächtnis, die Geschichte der Malerei, die der Maler in seinem Denken und Handeln im Sinne von Hegel aufhebt, das heißt bewahrt und gleichzeitig mit der Grenzüberschreitung auch negiert und hinter sich lässt.

Renato Ranaldi setzt dies in der Geste um, die die Farbe zum amorphen Klumpen verdichtet und nurmehr der Leinwand anhaftet statt sie auf der Fläche auszubreiten und mit imaginärem Raum aufzuladen. Er bringt die Malerei damit ein weiteres Mal in eine prekäre Situation, in eine Randexistenz, indem sein Bild alle vermeintliche Werte, Regeln und Klassifikationen der Kunst negiert. Die Identifikation mit dieser Geste, das obsessive Insistieren in der Serie dieser Foriquadro-Werke geht einher mit der Krise, der Katharsis, die Distanz

schafft, die notwendige Voraussetzung dafür ist, das Bild neu und weiter als seinen Rahmen zu denken. Der Rahmen ist ein immer wiederkehrendes und immer ausgeweitetes Motiv in Renato Ranaldis Werk. Er bedeutet die reale, materielle Grenzmarkierung des künstlerischen Spielfeldes, er ist ein metaphorischer Begriff und umschreibt den Schutz, die Sicherheit, die Integrität der künstlerischen Imagination, und an ihm und mit ihm wird die Grenzüberschreitung manifest. Mit dieser Geste gewinnt der Künstler zugleich Distanz zu all dem, was für ihn Malerei im Rahmen bedeutet. Identifikation als Künstler ist, dies alles mitzudenken und zugleich die Grenzen zu sprengen. Mit künstlerischen Mitteln im Werk und zugleich außerhalb, mit den Mitteln der Malerei jenseits der Malerei zu sein, das ist das spannungsgeladene Faszinosum künstlerischer Identität und Passion, wie sie Renato Ranaldi in der Tradition der Avantgarde begreift. „Ich bin Bildhauer, aber das ist mir sehr peinlich“1, zitiert Bruno Corà den Künstler, und in der vermeintlichen Ironie äußert sich der Drang in die Dreidimensionalität, die Unbescheidenheit des Malers, seine Grenzen zu überschreiten und die Malerei zur Skulptur zu verwandeln. Die prekäre Balance interessiert ihn, wenn er angesichts von „Fuoriquadro“ sagt: „Ich verwende Farbe wie Lehm. Wenn ich male, mache ich Skulptur, und wenn ich Skulpturen schaffe, dann male ich.“2 Schon in Werken wie „Pittura scolpita“ (1991) hat Renato Ranaldi die Farbe als Material so massiv aufgetragen, dass er sie plastisch modellieren und wie Bildhauermaterial formen konnte.

Auch das ist fortgesetzte Kunstgeschichte: Einmal mehr wird die Konkurrenz zwischen Malerei und Bildhauerei um die bilderzeugende Kraft thematisiert.

Einige der Werke aus dieser Serie „Fuoriquadro“ und ihrem Umfeld zeigen, dass Farbe substituiert werden kann durch vergleichbar überformte Objekte. Mit dem Titel „Odradek“ (2007) gibt Renato Ranaldi einen literarischen Verweis auf Franz Kafkas vielleicht berühmteste und geheimnisvollste Parabel: „Die Sorge des

Hausvaters“. Die Kurbel an dem angehefteten Gegenstand in Bronze vermittelt sogar eine sinnfällige Ähnlichkeit mit dem als Odradek benannten, kaum zu beschreibenden wesenhaften Etwas, das in der kurzen Parabel durch das Gebäude des Hausvaters geistert. Odradek ist Gegenstand und Wesen in einem, eine nicht einzuordnende, abstrakte Figur, die in dem in Raum und Zeit, Ordnung und Sinn gefügten Gebäude des Hausvaters das Prinzip der Sinnlosigkeit, die offen gehaltene Frage der Bedeutung verkörpert. Renato Ranaldi holt sich dieses Paradoxon in das komplexe Gefüge seines Kunstwerkes, die Bedeutungsfrage und ihr Überleben (die Sorge des Hausvaters) in der Kunst schlechthin. Der Farbklumpen oder die abstrakte plastische Form ist die Metapher für Odradek im komplexen Gebäude der Kunst im Allgemeinen und des Werkes von Renato Ranaldi im Besonderen.

Wenn von Malerei jenseits der auf den Keilrahmen aufgespannten Leinwand die Rede ist, von dem Raum um das Bild herum, dann ist ein Bezug nahe liegend: Unter dem Begriff „Concetto spaziale“ eröffnete Lucio Fontana der Malerei wie der Skulptur ein sich frei entfaltendes, die Grenzen des Kunstwerks als Gegenstand sprengendes Raumkontinuum. In seinen ab 1958 entstehenden „Tagli“ öffnete er mit Schnitten die monochrome Leinwand und ermöglicht in der Fläche der Malerei eine plastische Tiefe, zuerst intuitiv direkt, dann systematisch und mit rasiermesserscharfer Präzision geschnitten. Während Lucio Fontana die Integrität der Leinwand als Bildträger und der ultima ratio des monochromen Bildes zerstörte, führt Renato Ranaldi die Leinwand des Bildes in ihren ursprünglichen Zustand der Grundierung vor der Malerei zurück, um durch die Anheftung der Farbe als plastischem, bedeutungslosem Knäuel an der Außenkante des Bildes, in einer zunächst ikonoklastisch erscheinenden Geste nun der Malerei zugleich eine bislang so nicht realisierte Räumlichkeit zu eröffnen, jenseits der imaginären Raumkonstruktion in der Fläche des Bildes. Außerhalb des Rahmens wird nun im Werk von Renato Ranaldi die Debatte um Malerei geführt.

Dann lohnt noch einmal der Blick auf die Serie. Renato Ranaldi bezeichnet „Fuoriquadro 16“ (2010) als „sehr impressionistisch“ – die Farbe transportiert auch noch außerhalb der Bildfläche ihre Kraft der Transformation von künstlerischer Wahrnehmung, ganz malerisch empfunden. So hat jedes Bild der Serie seine

eigene Physiognomie, seinen eigenen Charakter wie immer neue Variationen über ein Motiv. Was als konzeptuelle Geste sich in Szene setzt, ist zugleich möglich als vielgestaltiges, komplexes Erleben des gleichen, das nie nur Wiederholung desselben ist. Das ist das dynamische Geheimnis der Serie.

RENATO RANALDI: LA PITTURA IN BILICO MA SOVRANA Bruno Corà

Chi non ha sperimentato su di sé l’enorme potenza del niente e non ne ha subito la tentazione conosce ben poco la nostra epoca.

I. Da tempo, mentre il pittore medita la resa definitiva, lo scultore è pronto a iniziare il nuovo assedio dello spazio. In queste opere fuoriquadro di Renato Ranaldi entrambe le volontà confliggono nell’essere-non essere dell’artista tragico funambolico.

Dopo aver concepito e posto in essere la ‘pittura scolpita’, ovvero dato corpo all’ossimoro che esprimesse la maggiore contraddizione possibile, ma al contempo capace di ridare ossigeno a modalità formative giunte al capolinea delle prassi rappresentative e perfino presentative, Ranaldi approda alla più estrema delle latitudini da lui esplorate nel non-essere, dopo circa mezzo secolo di derive artistico-poetiche. Si ha l’immediata sensazione, davanti a questo nuovo ciclo di opere maturate negli ultimi due anni, di assistere a un’esperienza limite, a un esercizio radicale di inversione spaziale, tanto rischioso in quanto compiuto con l’esplicita intenzione di spingere la pittura, con l’inconfondibile attitudine a lui congenita del bilico e dell’instabilità, verso l’esterno della superficie base per ogni processo significativo, fuori dal piano di sicurezza – tela o altro supporto – dove fosse possibile a un’immagine, venire al mondo.

A un certo momento si arriva a un punto di non ritorno nella elaborazione ossessiva del pensiero visionario e figurativo di un artista – è avvenuto per Claude Monet nel ciclo delle “Ninfee”, per Cézanne nella serie delle “Saint-

Victoire”, per Morandi nelle “Nature morte” e per altri ancora –, secondo cui tutto ciò che ha costituito la malia della creazione di un’immagine sembra dissolversi in una domanda più essenziale, una reductio ad extremis che sgombra il campo della vista su un orizzonte oceanico senza profili di possibili terre. Un azzeramento del pensiero, ancor prima che della mira all’infinito, che richiede a se stessi di rinunciare a ogni confortevole appoggio. È

il grado della prestazione senza protezione, della rinuncia a ogni prudenza,della repulsione alla speranza trobadorica, del volteggio sul trapezio senza rete di protezione. Il previsto gesto finale si annuncia con un ultimatum che però non rinuncia a qualificarsi ulteriormente, nonostante sia definitivo: ma per definire cosa?

I.1 Nella loro strutturazione, i fuoriquadro si presentano con un aspetto dalla semplicità sconcertante; potrebbero far pensare agli atti residuali di una laboriosa giornata del pittore, nella quale sicuramente, in qualche angolo dello studio, egli ha lavorato sodo per fornire un’opera rispondente a tutti i crismi e le regole dell’arte. E come accade alla fine di ogni giornata operosa, si può immaginare che il pittore, deposta l’opera dal cavalletto, prima di liberarsi degli abiti da lavoro e di lavarsi le mani per uscire dallo studio, passato accanto a una tela vi lasci con gesti decisi e ultimativi ciò che del colore resta su pennelli, spatole o stecche, pulendo gli arnesi del mestiere. Un gesto che peraltro è condiviso da chiunque usi del materiale altamente viscoso con strumenti atti a spalmarlo e distribuirlo con palette, cucchiai, spatole o altro, come fanno i gelatai, i pasticceri, gli stuccatori e anche i pittori.

I.2 L’opera fuoriquadro che si offre allo sguardo una volta compiuta appare essenzialmente realizzata mediante un supporto di tela tesa su un telaio e semplicemente preparata in bianco, senza alcuna immagine o segno, dunque lasciata vuota eccetto che sui bordi laterali in quattro o cinque punti dove si osservano grumi di accumulazione di colore distribuito mediante spatolature successive. Dunque i fuoriquadro nascono da gesti elementari che restano semplici ma non privi di una perversa logica che li significa da un limbo semantico in cui il pittore osserva e studia con trepidazione tutta la storia dell’arte con cui li confronta e misura, non privo di ansia.

I.3 Nel fuoriquadro è visualizzata la volontà estremista di collocare la pittura fuo-

ri dall’icona, esternamente al períechon, avrebbe detto Villa, cioè fuori da quello che avvolge. Ciò che viene esaltato e messo in evidenza ma anche in discussione è il cuore del supporto di rappresentazione, a favore dell’entità perimetrale di esso. La pittura sembra non voler contare più sul piano dove per secoli si è esibita, ma fuori da esso. Tenuta all’esterno dell’edificio-quadro, fuori del quadrante mandalico, fuori nel modo in cui si collocano i mostri eiettati e proiettati oltre i muri nelle cattedrali gotiche, la pittura resta ancora ambiguamente vincolata al quadro in facies residuale.

Essa sembra alludere a una centralità ‘altrove’ situata, di cui attorno al quadro restano aggrappati alcuni frammenti, le ultime manifestazioni, oltretutto plastiche.

I.4 Se “La cornice separa l’immagine da tutto ciò che non è immagine” (Stoichita) nel fuoriquadro di Ranaldi (dove peraltro la cornice non è prevista) la pittura spatolata accuratamente su alcuni punti del bordo della tela occupa – e dunque è – ciò che si dovrebbe considerare ‘non-immagine’.

Nelle opere attuali di Ranaldi allora, sulla tela priva di segno e colore, l’immagine è la superficie lasciata vuota e la non-immagine è la pittura in forma di elemento plastico aggettante dal quadro verso l’ambiente. Ma in nome della pittura possiamo verosimilmente accontentarci di tali esiti ermeneutici?

I.5 Il fuoriquadro, in quanto concetto immaginifico-spaziale sporge dal quadro verso l’Aperto, mentre in verità vi si aggrappa come taluno che, sospeso su un abisso, non vi si lascia però cadere. Resta vincolato allo stabile. Il fuoriquadro perciò non è qualcosa di totalmente sospeso nell’Aperto. Adombra certamente un ennesimo stato di ‘bilico’ della pittura di Ranaldi, così spesso resa significativa da quel dispositivo che per suggerire la condizione di rischio, necessita di un – pur estremo – punto di appoggio.

II. I paradossi sono discorsi che vanno contro l’opinione corrente: “effettivamente essi sono volti a contraddire il senso comune”. Il paradosso come la condizione di ‘bilico’ sollecita l’interlocutore a una verifica dell’asserzione che manifesta.

‘de nihilo’ Quadro girato (circa 1675), conservato al Museo Nazionale di Copenhagen, ma così non è, se il fuoriquadro di Ranaldi, negando che la pittura si trovi sul davanti o sul retro della superficie del quadro ed evidenziando invece che essa è al di fuori di quella superficie che dà supporto alla macchina illusoria, invita a pensare come il processo d’illusorietà non avvenga che nella mente e cioè che la pittura sia altrove rispetto al quadro.

II.1 Con il fuoriquadro Ranaldi affronta un aspetto metalinguistico della (sua) pittura. Ordinariamente già incline ad evitare il modo dimostrativo del fare pittura, cioè l’atto con cui si evidenzia e si esalta la capacità e la ‘bravura’ dell’artista, per aderire invece all’esigenza ‘rappresentativa’, qui egli porta alle estreme possibilità l’atto pittorico nella modalità della ‘stesura’ del colore.

In particolar modo nel fuoriquadro si pone in evidenza l’accumulo del colore proprio mediante successive ‘spatolature’ al punto da produrre coaguli che muniscono le paste cromatiche di valenze plastiche. Già in passato Ranaldi aveva affrontato il rovello antinomico della pittura ‘scolpita’. E in realtà nel fuoriquadro si attua un avanzamento su quel sentiero già intrapreso. Ma stavolta il deposito pittorico ottenuto mediante spatolature non ha la centralità di opere come Arche-tipo-pittura scolpita, 1991, Sospeso, 1991, Pittura scolpita, 1991 o come quel Naufragio, 2000 in cui le spatolature di colore sono liberamente

La materia pittorica quindi è posta in un’emblematica lateralità. Al centro dell’opera non vi è che il vuoto.

II.2 Attitudine riscontrata costantemente in Ranaldi è l’osservazione di cose, oggetti, architetture e forme di ogni altro tipo, nonché particolari che alla vista comune di solito sfuggono.

Sovente egli, soffermandosi su quei dettagli da ognuno ritenuti trascurabili, ininfluenti o addirittura insignificanti, ne studia la morfologia fino a ricavarne il quid distintivo di cui spesso fa uso e che opportunamente elaborato introduce poi in taluni suoi modi formativi.

affiancate occupando pressoché totalmente il centro del supporto ligneo usato; nei fuoriquadro, al contrario, si concentra sui bordi dell’opera, ai limiti esterni del supporto della tela, su quei lati che definiscono la geometria del quadro.

II.3 I dettagli nei quadri di Brueghel vengono definiti da Karel Van Mander le “stranezze”.

“Strano” – dice José Jimenez – è la mescolanza, il porre dettagli fuori contesto, l’introduzione, ad esempio, di motivi, cornici (…) in quadri di tema religioso”.

Quella di Ranaldi è un’intuizione assai coerente con numerose altre già avute nel suo lungo percorso ‘deviante’, in senso critico, dall’omologazione di modi, per lui sempre insufficienti a soddisfare il desiderio di rovescio di senso e di libertà.

Il fuoriquadro è la proposizione della rinuncia sistematica al dato narrativo dell’immagine che spesso costituisce normativamente un dipinto.Ciò che in esso viene disatteso è l’esaudimento della funzione rappresentativa che viene posta in scacco ab initium.

Più che annettere una valenza propositiva in ordine alla costruzione di senso, i grumi di colore esito di spatolature sui bordi del telaio,

affermano il nonsense del racconto, sempre ennesimo e mai esauribile.

Se si ascrive – come sembra opportuno – l’esperienza dei fuoriquadro alla concezione oppositiva non conforme, carattere peraltro di parte considerevole dell’opera di Ranaldi, si deve pur tuttavia considerare questo suo nuovo (estremo) capitolo di creazione pittoricoplastica, una dichiarata preposizione di addizionalità spaziale.

II.4 Il ‘come’ e il ‘dove’ in Ranaldi sono valenze rivelatrici della concezione di maggiore o minore volontà di mantenere integra, incontaminata, la superficie della rappresentazione del quadro. In molti casi osservabili (e osservati), Ranaldi appone la firma in calce al quadro, sul bordo inferiore, al centro o in una delle due zone estreme. Anche nei disegni, la firma eseguita con un corsivo che descrive una tensione arcuata campeggia in fondo al foglio. Nel fuoriquadro, la necessità di rendere evidente il processo significativo di esteriorizzazione al quadro della valenza pittorica induce Ranaldi a non produrre sulla superficie della tela alcun segno e dunque nemmeno la firma.

II.5 Se nel genere del paesaggio – che convenzionalmente si situa ‘al di là’ del quadro – la condizione imprescindibile a cui dare corpo è il senso della distanza, nel fuoriquadro di Ranaldi tale imprescindibilità è che la pittura stessa sia al di fuori della superficie tradizionalmente preposta alla rappresentazione. E se nella pittura di paesaggio si rende possibile l’immaginificazione della natura, in virtù appunto di una convenzione che consente di osservare da un interno l’esterno en plein air, nei fuoriquadro l’autore intende dare per scontato che in un quadro la pittura non è ciò che si può osservare all’interno della tela, ma è invece quel quid che è altrove (perciò non scontatamente nel quadro).

Nel testo Fuoriquadro, scritto da Ranaldi in forma di pseudoallegoria per raccontare la teoria delle opere che recano tale titolo(una ventina di tele di varie dimensioni) egli afferma: “Ho prodotto e proiettato la vita simbolica di una visione: mi sono lasciato catturare da questa e, più mi sono fatto imprigionare, rinchiudere

all’interno della concretezza dell’opera, più ho anelato al fuori, cercando di capire quello che l’opera mi tace”. E inoltre: “L’opera è solo la denuncia dell’opera. (…) l’opera mi consegna dalla sua centralità alla centralità esterna del suo stesso segreto, verso l’esperienza di un vuoto dove, in assenza di segni, prolifero segni. La questione è delicata (…)”.1 Affermando che la pittura non è ciò che si trova sulla superficie del quadro, Ranaldi con i fuoriquadro sancisce una nuova concezione plastico-spaziale che segna una posizione inedita e assai significativa nella storia dell’arte. A questa dimensione semiologica è opportuno domandarsi come vi sia giunto.

Il processo lento e non sempre esplicito, ma sicuramente rabdomantico, in risposta a un’esigenza autentica e autonoma che gli è propria, prende le mosse dagli anni Settanta.

III. Il supporto della tela si avvia a divenire ‘teatro’ di differenti acrobazie elusive della

sua funzione e rivolte a destituirne la valenza canonica sin dall’inizio degli anni Settanta.

Da quando cioè Ranaldi, all’insegna del principio compendiario dell’archetipo secondo cui una cosa è anche un’altra cosa sdogana la propria logica pittorica dall’equivalenza dipinto=quadro e ‘costruisce’ i suoi lavori in piena libertà concettuale e morfologica.

Atti a formare un angolo mediante l’accostamento di due tele, Ranaldi elabora tra il 1971 e il ’74 una serie di lavori nei quali le superfici dei supporti restano essenzialmente marginali rispetto alle costruzioni di senso che tra esse, come tra le quinte di un palcoscenico, prendono forma. In Riposo, 1973, una piccola altalena è sospesa a un sottile asse proteso tra le sommità di due tele; in Passaggio cromatico, 1973, una passerella di legno e corda mette in comunicazione due tele trattate ciascuna cromaticamente in modo diverso. In entrambi questi casi, diversamente da altre creazioni ‘angolari’ di quegli anni, i supporti, pur necessari alla qualificazione topologica richiesta loro, subiscono una riduzione semiologica considerevole, poiché non recano alcuna rilevante traccia né iconografica né segnica, se si escludono le preparazioni cromatiche dei fondi.

Più tardi, nel corso degli anni Ottanta e Novanta, con un’assiduità che rivela un’esigenza basilare, Ranaldi lavora allo sviluppo di un concetto di ‘bilico’, intuizione pervasiva di tutta la sua opera, in quanto stato di rischio in cui porre le cose perché catturino la nostra attenzione. All’insegna dunque di tale

principio, opere come Il delicato equilibrio di un artista, 1973 e poi in seguito La discesa nel Maelström, 1982, Bilico, 1988 e Bilico d’arte, 1995 e altre rimarcano una stanzialità ai bordi, ai limiti, sugli orli, che si attesta all’origine della concezione spaziale dei fuoriquadro. In un certo modo, in quegli anni, la funzione accessoria dei supporti si evidenzia anche in opere come Alessandrina 1986, in cui la centralità dell’elemento significativo giace all’esterno del telaio, nel calco anatomico bronzeo che sostiene l’insieme plastico.

Ma, quanto Ranaldi abbia a lungo, nel corso degli anni, covato e alimentato in sé un’esigenza di svuotamento morfologico della superficie dei suoi lavori pittorico-plastici, nell’intuita realtà estetica che nei fuoriquadro si evidenzia, cioè che la pittura è fenomeno essenzialmente esterno al quadro, risulta obiettivamente verificabile da una notevole quantità di opere che, ciascuna in modo diverso, esplora e premonisce le possibilità raggiunte con le opere fuoriquadro.

In tale tensione prefigurante s’inscrivono, a mio parere, le opere Come circola il nero, 1992, grande cornice in cui il colore a olio

è elaborato come una ragnatela nel vuoto funambolico dell’opera, Cache noir, 1992, e soprattutto Ornato I, 1990 e Ornato II, 1990, Tre di quattro, 1994, Nascondere, 1995, Ricciolo e blu reale, 1997 in cui gli oggetti restano sempre esterni e sottostanti al supporto o lo mettono in scacco esibendolo nudamente e ribaltandone la funzione.

Nuove considerazioni si aggiungono a quanto sin qui indicato, se si prendono in esame i cicli

“pittura scolpita” egli infatti elabora considerevoli quantità di colore a olio, modellandolo in forme evocanti il suo archetipo degli esordi o altre concrezioni quali nidi, imbuti, fisionomie, macchine, nel corso di tutti gli anni Novanta.

Nel 2001, in occasione di una mostra, Ranaldi pubblica il Promemoria, 1996, nel quale si leggono alcuni concetti-chiave del suo lavoro, tra cui quelli relativi alla “pittura scolpita”. “si può dire di una scultura che è dipinta, non si dice di una pittura che è scolpita. L’invenzione artistica sta nel rovescio di questa norma. Il colore a olio (tradizione pittorica) usato come se fosse creta (tradizione plastica) quando plasmiamo una forma. Impiego di due tradizioni per negarle entrambe”.2 Le opere si rivelano appassionate ricognizioni del pigmento pittorico, delle sue manifestazioni di qualità materiologica, delle sue proprietà cromatiche, del grado di viscosità e di sontuosa apparenza; una meditazione fenomenologica sul pigmento cromatico che culmina col rito autocelebrativo della ‘stesura’ e dei modi con cui essa avviene per opera dell’artista, consapevole interprete.

In tale ambito sarebbero molti gli esempi da chiamare in causa, ma tra essi, ai fini della

d’opera improntati da Ranaldi alla metamorfosi della pittura in scultura. Con l’enunciato di

nostra riflessione, non si può ignorare certamente Conoscere impressionista, 1999 e altri lavori in cui Ranaldi principia a ‘codificare’ la spatolatura del pigmento come modalità residuale con cui liberare lo strumento usato distribuendo il colore sui bordi interni del telaio o del supporto, che nel caso evocato è una doppia struttura scatolare.

Su quei bordi del supporto ligneo, Ranaldi ha ‘spatolato’ ciò che resta di depositi cromatici in quantità moderata, producendo una ‘cornice’ policroma, apparentemente indeterminata.

Un passo successivo, direi rilevante, ha luogo in conseguenza della creazione di “sculture a carica”, (2003), esperienza in cui Ranaldi concepisce e realizza una serie di opere recanti parti di fusioni in bronzo comprese delle manovelle che inserisce su forme autonome o colloca sull’esterno dei telai da pittura. sioni e manovelle, saldamente fissate ai telai, sbilanciano sensibilmente il baricentro delle opere e fondamentalmente introducono uno spaesamento morfologico nell’opera, giacché essa diviene organismo complesso del tutto incoerente e ambiguamente percepibile sia come scultura che come pittura. Queste nuove opere, che recano i titoli NEOodradek (in tre differenti versioni tra il 2007 e il 2008, con esplicito omaggio alla nomenclatura inventata da Kafka in un suo racconto) e Axis, 2008 (in due diverse versioni), non diversamente dai quadri, ostentano sulle loro assialità verticali in legno dipinto di blu reale o in canna di bambù talune fusioni in bronzo vincolate ai supporti con filo metallico.

IV. L’Arte per Ranaldi incontra il Modo come hazard e destino che tuttavia saranno puntualmente traditi per una proiezione di modo a venire. Essa si affaccia reiteratamente ai bordi dell’abisso di senso rintanato in ogni cosa: la vertigine nasconde la consolazione di precipitare giù verso l’origine oscura della Forma, verso il desiderio di non essere quel profilo, la consapevolezza piena di essere non-forma.

‘Dentro’ l’opera di Ranaldi s’incrocia continuamente il desiderio del ‘fuori’.

IV.1 Nonostante aprano una dimensione enunciativa inedita sia dal punto di vista pittorico sia da quello spaziale e di senso, i fuoriquadro non sono nati come funghi, ovvero senza antefatti. Né poteva essere diversamente. A quanto già indicato, quali momenti morfologici che annunciavano l’interesse di periferizzare l’oggetto sul telaio o su altri supporti – si tenga presente Arredo 3, 2005, scala dipinta in blu reale con la scultura in bronzo di una manovella sul fianco (collocata alla Spezia e a Parigi entro il più vasto sistema plastico dell’installazione Biliho d’ì ciuho e la berva, 2003) – si devono affiancare opere come Ci troviamo in piazza, 2005-2006, in cui i colori acrilici e le tempere preannunciano le spatolature dei fuoriquadro, circondando di centinaia di depositi un vuoto d’immagine.

La radicale intuizione di Ranaldi si confronta con alcune illustri versioni affatto diverse ma

pur da richiamare in questa circostanza. Oltre al quadro De nihilo di Gijsbrecht già evocato, in cui si rappresenta un quadro visto dal retro, ciò che gli ha valso di essere annoverato tra gli artisti interessati alla ‘poetica del rovesciamento’, non si possono trascurare alcuni lavori di Paolini dei primi anni Sessanta, come il Senza titolo, 1961 (dal significato assai diverso) e successivamente di un recentissimo lavoro di Bertrand Lavier Bima, 2010.

IV.2 Ma non meno interessante può risultate la riflessione ripresa da Stoichita, ma già avviata da Jacques Derrida a proposito del concetto di parergon in relazione al genere della natura morta. Scrive Stoichita: “La nozione di parergon (para contro; ergon = opera) (…) è una nozione storicamente fondata: designava nella retorica antica, gli abbellimenti aggiunti a un quadro (addenda) (…) Para/ergon (praeter/opus) è dunque quel che all’opera si aggiunge e nello stesso tempo, quel che le si contrappone”3.

Dal canto suo, Derrida sottolinea che “Un parergon va contro, accanto, in aggiunta all’ergon, al lavoro compiuto, al fatto, all’opera,

ma non rimane in disparte, bensì entra in contatto e coopera da un certo al-di-fuori, con il di-dentro dell’operazione: Non semplicemente da fuori, né semplicemente da dentro. È come un accessorio che si è costretti ad accogliere sul bordo, a prendere a bordo”.4 Ciò che nei fuoriquadro è reso esplicito – la pittura è fenomeno essenzialmente esterno al quadro –, dopo aver occhieggiato in una gran parte dell’opera ranaldiana, a seguito di questo rischioso pronunciamento si rivela quale sintomo assai spesso emerso anche nella sua intensa attività disegnativa.

In Monadi in agguato sulla via delle tebaidi, 2006, disegno in inchiostro di china su carta, posto da Ranaldi in calce alla pubblicazione Quijotesca5 se ne ha un esempio di poco precedente i fuoriquadro. Nel tracciato visionario di una lunga mappa in cui, nella griglia che fa da sfondo, si snoda un tortuoso sentiero, si distinguono altresì delle planimetrie di luoghi, appunto le ‘tebaidi’ di cui si fa menzione nel titolo, ma anche oscure macchie – le monadi

– circoscritte da segni zigzaganti che si irradiano ‘attorno’ e verso il sentiero, ma sempre all’esterno di esso. È eloquente in quel disegno la collocazione spaziale delle ‘monadi’ che presenta vistose analogie di struttura distributiva delle forme con ciascuno dei fuori quadro.

V. Retrocedendo nel tempo, le morfologie degli “interni” degli “esterni”, dei “luoghi”, del-

le “Monadi fuori” e degli “Arredi” disegnate e già raccolte in Parusie evidenziano e mettono in chiaro che in quella stessa cosmogonia di segni la concezione della pittura di Ranaldi è tutt’altro che vincolata alla forma quadro, rivelandosi piuttosto essere una logica individuale, rispondente essenzialmente all’unico imperativo osservato da Ranaldi: contraddirsi liberamente.

El propio Renato Ranaldi ha descrito el proceso que lo ha llevado a su descubrimiento: il fuoriquadro. La visita a un museo, lugar de acumulación y de síntesis, de peligrosas emociones a primera vista ocultas, que pueden ocasionar en el ojo nervioso y sobreconcentrado del artista el más intenso grado de perturbación anímica. Síndrome de Stendhal1 ante un estado de nuestra cultura, tan densamente poblada de imágenes, citas y reverberaciones del sentido, que apenas deja espacio libre para la mirada virgen del creador.

“Ho prodotto e proiettato” – escribe Ranaldi – “la vita simbolica di una visione, mi sono lasciato catturare da questa e più mi sono fatto imprigionare, rinchiudere all’interno della concretezza dell’opera, più ho anelato al fuori cercando di capire quello che l’opera mi tace.” No deja de ser interesante que el artista que provoca esa visione simbplica sea precisamente Pieter Brueghel “el Viejo”, uno de los pintores que más intensamente acumula motivos y figuras en las abigarradas composiciones de sus cuadros, de modo especial en aquellos que tienen como motivo escenas de la vida cotidiana. Leyendo el relato de Ranaldi, enseguida vino a mi memoria un paso del excelente libro de Daniel Arasse El detalle2 que se refiere precisamente a Brueghel. Arasse señala cómo el gran artista, poeta y teórico holandés Karel Van Mander indica frecuentemente en su Libro de la pintura, publicado en Haarlem en 1604, que “son los detalles más secundarios los que suscitan a veces más placer”. E inmediatamente añade: “Brueghel es así llamado ‘Pedro el Raro’ no sólo porque hacía, a la manera de Hieronymus Bosch, ‘cuadros fantásticos o grotescos’, sino porque esas ‘rarezas’ se vuelven a encontrar bajo la forma de detalles en otros cuadros”. Lo que se considera “raro” es la mezcla, poner detalles fuera de contexto, introducir por ejemplo moti-

vos cómicos no ya en escenas de la vida cotidiana, sino en cuadros de temática religiosa.

Pero más allá de ello, lo que me interesa es lo que Arasse afirma después: “De la fascinación [por el detalle], el espectador puede pasar al deseo, finalmente, de recortar la obra.”3 Fascinación de apropiarnos de aquello que en un escenario complejo y abigarrado nos interpela, nos habla directamente a nosotros: deseo de recortarlo.

La visión de Ranaldi, fugaz, fugitiva, tiene sin embargo la persistencia de una obsesión. El detalle que le interpela y obsesiona es, no obstante, una ausencia, un vacío: el cuadro que había visto no está donde lo había visto.

Se trata, entonces, de la visión de un fantasma, de un cuadro irreal que, intensamente presente, desaparece repentinamente de la vista. Escribe Ranaldi: “quel quadro non è mai esistito, eppure il suo spettro è pure opera”. Tal vez el problema tenga que ver con los límites, con la delimitación de la pintura, que habitualmente se nos ofrece encuadrada y protegida por un marco. En un bello y breve ensayo, “Meditación del marco”, fechado en 1921, José Ortega y Gasset nos dice: “Viven los cuadros alojados en los marcos. Esa asociación de marco y cuadro no es accidental.

El uno necesita del otro. Un cuadro sin marco tiene el aire de un hombre expoliado y desnudo. Su contenido parece derramarse por los cuatro lados del lienzo y deshacerse en la atmósfera.”4 El marco serviría, entonces, para dar entrada “en la realidad” a esa dimensión irreal, imaginaria, que constituye la obra artística. Según Ortega y Gasset: “Es la obra de arte una isla imaginaria que flota rodeada de realidad por todas partes. Para que se produzca es, pues, necesario que el cuerpo estético quede aislado del contorno vital. De la tierra que pisamos a la tierra pintada no podemos transitar paso a paso.”5 Marco o

no, sin un elemento que la aísle y delimite la obra de arte se disiparía materialmente, seguramente podría seguir siendo obra pero con un carácter espectral, como nos dice Ranaldi.

Una experiencia concreta vino a darme una nueva perspectiva sobre la cuestión. Visitando en el Museo del Louvre de París una exposición sobre arte y cultura rusa llamada Sainte Russie, me sentí fascinado por un hermosísimo icono: San Jorge abatiendo al dragón, datado en el segundo cuarto del siglo XV, y que hoy se conserva en el Museo Ruso de San Petersburgo. Aparte de la belleza y equilibrio de la composición, con los estilizados cuerpos de San Jorge y su caballo blanco, lo que llamó mi atención fue un detalle muy concreto: en la parte superior la pintura desbordaba el límite del marco, utilizando éste también como soporte. El dinamismo en diagonal de la composición sitúa parte de la mano de San Jorge y de la lanza, así como un fragmento del aura del Santo, en el

propio marco, transmitiendo la sensación de que la pintura podría desplazarse más allá del cuadro. De nuevo, pensaba en Ortega y Gasset, quien explicando el predominio histórico del marco dorado en nuestra tradición de cultura, debido a que da una mayor cantidad de reflejos, escribe: “El reflejo no es del que refleja ni del que se refleja, sino más bien algo entre las cosas, espectro sin materia.”6 Es decir: el desbordamiento de los límites de la pintura, la utilización del marco mismo como soporte de la obra, llevaría a ésta a una condición espectral, la situaría en una especie de tierra de nadie, lo que podría ayudarnos a comprender mejor lo que Ranaldi cuenta en su relato y el proceso que le permitió concebir el fuoriquadro. Pensé, inmediatamente, en una especie de vaciamiento o, mejor, de despojamiento. Y realicé una sencilla operación con la reproducción del icono, intentando ver qué quedaba de la imagen si conservábamos tan sólo el detalle de la pintura sobre el marco:

El resultado me pareció de una nitidez asombrosa: los fragmentos de pintura seguían manteniendo una gran fuerza expresiva, signos de una escena que quedaba situada fuera del alcance de la vista. Resto, pero quizás resto constitutivo de sentido, tal y como Paul Celan define la poesía: residuo o resto cantable, singbarer Rest. Los fragmentos de óleo o acrílico que Ranaldi sitúa en los márgenes de los cuadros, de la blanca tela vacía y sin marco, hablan también ese mismo lenguaje. Negación de una pintura meramente ilusionista, registro radical de una visión en la que la obra se vacía para así dar forma al momento primigenio, a lo que queda, como resto o residuo de sentido, cuando se elimina todo lo accidental. Todo gravita sobre el detalle, emancipado del conjunto de manera no muy diferente a lo que encontramos en Brueghel. Sólo que aquí, en Ranaldi, el detalle toma la forma del fragmento, esa atomización de los universos de sentido y de la representación que, desde la gran revolución romántica, impulsa lo mejor del arte de nuestro tiempo. Un arte crítico, no conciliatorio, cuestionador de la realidad y de los diversos espacios de poder y dominio.

Ernst Bloch, el gran filósofo de la utopía, afirma en El Principio Esperanza: “sin esta potencia para el fragmento, la fantasía estética tendría, sí, suficiente intuición en el mundo, más que toda otra percepción humana, pero no tendría, en último término correlato”7, ya que sin esa dimensión de astillamiento, de ruptura, de las imágenes establecidas de lo real, el arte quedaría limitado a una función de mera reproducción de lo existente, a simple ornamento. El fragmento permite entrever algo que quizás todavía no es, o no lo es plenamente, pero que puede llegar a ser. Y ahí se inserta la función y la capacidad del arte para

cuestionar el estado de cosas existente, para situar nuestra mirada y nuestra comprensión de las cosas en el terreno de las preguntas, del cuestionamiento, y no en el de la mera aceptación pasiva. “Nunca concluso” – dice también Bloch – “y es por ello que le sienta muy bien a lo demasiado bello el que salte el barniz”8.

La misma posición estética que encontramos en los fuoriquadro actúa también en las piezas escultóricas de Ranaldi, en la serie llamada Axis, intervenciones mínimas, sutiles, aparentemente fuera de contexto, literalmente fuera del cuadro y sin marco. En ellas encontramos un signo alusivo de ese símbolo primordial presente en distintas culturas humanas, el axis mundi, que se concibe como eje cósmico, como punto de unión del cielo y la tierra. En una de sus colecciones de aforismos, llamada Granos de polen (1797-1798), Novalis afirma: “Nos encontramos en una misión: estamos llamados a la formación del orbe”9. Este conjunto de intensas obras de Renato Ranaldi, capaces de despertar el grado más alto de emoción, todas ellas gravitando en el eje del fuoriquadro, son fragmentos explosivos, cauces de sentido, pequeños destellos de un mundo que vendrá. Sólo así, únicamente a través de una estética del fragmento puede el arte abrir el camino a una estética formativa pero no conciliadora. En la singularidad irrepetible del fragmento resuena o reverbera lo universal de forma no totalizadora, abriéndose la posibilidad de formación de un orbe sobre la singularidad de una puesta en común no totalizante. Esos pequeños signos, fuoriquadro, son no sólo el resto cantable de una pintura no visible, sino mucho más, actúan como límite o reserva, moral y cognoscitiva, de la memoria de nuestra civilización.

FUORIQUADRO Renato Ranaldi

Molti anni fa, dopo la visita al Kunsthistorisches Museum di Vienna, si attivò in me una insolita, dettagliata memoria del grande quadro di Bruegel il Vecchio, mirabile summa allegorica alloggiata nella sala dedicata all’artista. Impressionato dal nitore delle immagini di quell’universo pittorico rievocato, conoscendomi più incline e sensibile al riverbero di senso che all’analisi dei particolari di un’opera, pensai valesse la pena registrare tutto quell’insieme sconcertante di dati. Come un fenomeno da baraccone stavo dimostrando una facoltà di ricordare prodigiosa, qualcosa simile a una malattia oracolare, ma mi chiedevo come mai dei quattordici dipinti di Bruegel ne stavo rimuginando uno solo.

Di notte in albergo mi misi al lavoro e, con veloci abbozzi e annotazioni, passai in rassegna i particolari di quella memoria.

Cominciai coi dettagli dell’abito della bambina stupefatta, bambola di bisquit cadaverica tristemente beata. Sembra affetta da sindrome timopatica, un essere neutrale che è inattaccabile dal male e dalla paura demoniaca, custode di un esorcismo potente e vivente.

Sta affacciata a un balconcino pericolante, aggettante da una parete dall’intonaco tutto cretti che lasciano intravedere mattoncini rossi ben allineati, e tiene alto un vessillo bordato di rosso illuminato dalla luce di un sole scialbo. Si mostra a una folla dall’aria incredula radunata nella piazza, teatro comune di allegorie e pantomime che condividono la stessa scena urbana. Un tipo tondo come una mongolfiera, paludato con una specie di pastrano di velluto con maniche tutte sbuffi e pieghe caratterizzate da un cangiantismo d’impronta manierista, tiene al guinzaglio un cagnetto.

La bestiola, con la zampa alzata, innaffia il cimiero di un cavaliere crociato sprofondato in un sonno beato con la bocca aperta come

pesce fuor d’acqua. Nella sua troppo ampia armatura, dentro il sogno che lo ospita, tenta il difficile metabolismo di un pasto e relativa bevuta pantagruelica: è sdraiato supino e a gambe aperte, con la spada in pugno nella mano destra, nella sinistra una coppa di vino color rubino che è stato versato sul selciato.

Più in là, verso il limitare destro del dipinto, un contadino ingobbito, intento ad ammassare sul carro cavolfiori, fa mercato nella piazza brulicante di gente. Tutti sembrano non avere nessuna fretta, si trovano lì a curiosare e vivere la conferma rassicurante che gli usi e costumi, quella mattina sotto quel sole smorto, sono gli stessi di sempre. Una vecchia che indossa una calzamaglia a strisce colorate coi piedi che sguazzano dentro zoccoli di legno grandi come barche, esce all’aperto da una porta sgangherata. La megera gesticolante, scarmigliata come una furia, è inseguita da una frotta di monelli scalzi vocianti e cenciosi: trascinano un maialino rosa soddisfatto che troneggia su un carrettino blu reale. La zona sinistra del dipinto accoglie l’immagine di un palazzetto sul cui tetto un uomo si accinge al sacrificio di una capra tenuta saldamente per le corna dalle sue robuste mani. Il braccio sollevato, armato di coltello, è disegnato sulla perpendicolare descritta dalla caduta in picchiata di un angelo dotato di ali cherubiche che, infagottato in una veste cremisi gonfia come una vela al vento, piomba giù a interrompere il sacrificio. È un magnete spirituale, brandisce come un’arma l’iperbole-crocifisso, il miglior paradosso escogitato dai cristiani, genialmente avvilente nella terroristica funzione. Certo è che con questi non c’è stata mai pace. Anche se ti tappassi gli occhi per non vedere tutto il sangue che gronda dai crocifissi, ci saranno ovunque mille icone, martìri d’ogni genere, a ricordarti che la santità coincide con la sanguinarietà.

La messa in scena delle allegorie avviene in una grande piazza ovale rischiarata da una ben studiata luce che, come una finta luna piena, accarezza e scivola via rivelando, quasi fosse un fenomeno sconosciuto, tracce sostanziali di deformità mitologiche, nella penombra indecifrabili. Una corda, tesa fra due pali piantati proprio nei due fuochi dell’ellisse, permette a un lanzichenecco con un pitale in bilico sulla testa di esibirsi come funambolo.

In un angolo dietro una colonna di onice sta mezzo nascosto un vecchio barbuto. Indossa un lungo pastrano, sul capo un turbante di seta dai vistosi colori con una piuma di pavone che svetta. Col braccio teso addita le evoluzioni di quel lanzichenecco, come a volere deviare sguardi indagatori dalla sua persona a qualcosa d’altro: è imbarazzato, il mago, si sente esaminato. Facile stornare l’attenzione: basta additare qualsiasi soggetto. In quel caos una cosa rimanda a un’altra cosa in una concatenazione di analogie e difformità dentro una prossemica senza fine. Lo sguardo inquieto non trova dove posarsi in tutto quel trambusto, vaga nella speranza di trovare una sorta di principio generatore di tutta quella calca di simboli: verrebbe la tentazione di sgomberare la piazza da tutte le personificazioni che non cessano di indicarne altre. Ma, fatto il deserto, ti avvedi che è stato inutile: la traccia di quel teatro è indelebile, come in autunno: non fai a tempo a spazzare un luogo che è già di nuovo tutto coperto di foglie morte. Cancellare è una pulizia apparente, è atto fertile che prolifera nostalgiche memorie, anche quelle indecenti. Per ogni forma c’è il proprio seguito, ogni forma contiene il proprio non essere quell’apparenza stessa. Questa è, ma non è ancora quello che riverbera: è la traccia del fantasma a venire. Non è ancora l’attuazione fantastica che sarà, ma lo sarà quando i segni di cui è costituita verranno interpretati.

In primo piano, proprio difronte al timido mago, un prelato diafano dalla vaga aria furtiva e omicida, il capo coperto con una cuffia da contadino e a piedi nudi, deposto il pastorale accanto alla falce che qualche morte secca ha dimenticato proprio lì, accarezza, il pornocrate, il pube grasso di una dama che

sembra cantare qualche canzonaccia mentre tiene sollevata la veste cobalto con le sue dita grassocce. Mostra due robuste cosce rosa spalancate e i piedi dentro pantofoline da cortigiana di lusso. Testimone della scena è Fataturca, una maliarda dal carnato perlaceo e dalla boccuccia vermiglia ben disegnata.

Fa le corna con la mano sinistra, l’incantatrice, e mostra un corpo rotondetto e lubrico ben piantato a terra con una decisa ponderatio che un velo trasparente finge di coprire.

Sembrano tutti come ammattiti dentro un carnevale gioioso, spossati dai fremiti di Psiche per aver domato qualche pandemia che sarebbe stata esiziale per quell’intero impero psichiatrico. Un mondo dove la goffaggine dei dissennati ha una funzione, si tratta di rovesciare il peso dell’angoscia d’esserci, aspettando di sparire dalla scena del mondo. In città quella masnada di buffoni alterati ha il compito sacrificale di farsi carico e impensierirsi per la morte dell’umano genere, si ingegnano di ridicolizzare il sonno eterno mettendo in scena granguignolesche pagliacciate, non tanto per loro stessi – che sono apostoli divulgatori del sacro criptico umorismo, quindi semidei – ma per l’umanità intera. Certi di suscitare stupore, esorcizzano con allegorie ad oltranza dentro la sfera sacra dell’ilarità, decisi a cavarti lo sconcerto di un sorriso a tutti i costi, sia pure facendoti il solletico sotto le ascelle. Hanno l’ardire di riflettersi nello specchio cavo della libertà del sogno che sovverte, dove reciti il tuo pianto e dove vedi apparire la smorfia estatica dell’idiozia inspiegabilmente fascinosa di chi è preda del cosmico e sacrale brio.

In basso a sinistra della tela uno straccione, pieno di cerimonioso timore, con faticosa cautela, solleva delicatamente un lembo del lenzuolo che cela il prodigio di un volto, come una brutale ferita si mostra col ghigno della feroce demenza il Lupus. Numerose allegorie, indispensabili le une alle altre come maglie della stessa catena, si autorizzano vicendevolmente a esistere vincolando nella funzione apotropaica la vita, affinchè la malattia e la morte, strabiliate dalla messa in scena di tanta idiozia in quella piazza e nei vicoli, trovino indecente visitare quel popolo di matti.

Tutto avviene in un paesaggio urbano dove vicoli, come numerosi fasci di nervi, s’incrociano tra di loro, si annodano, circola una linfa in un groviglio vivente di attitudini tra infinite maschere di realtà sovrapposte e di risposte smaniose a qualche superstizione o comandamento da contrastare con motti e gesti blasfemi.

Qui si ha orrore del peccato imperdonabile di morire di malattia in casa, nel proprio letto.

Qui s’innesta il principio di neccessità di vivere il dramma dei drammi: incrociare il senso ignoto della ritualità, agìta da una pletora eccitata di morituri condannati fin dal momento della loro apparizione a perdere tutto quello che hanno e quello che è stato promesso loro.

In questo Narrenschif1, conca di eccitazione febbrile, che solca in lungo e in largo il senso, tutto diventa possibile. Oltre la città il cielo è basso e pesante, una foschìa fa da velario al sole di un pallido mezzogiorno. L’aria è piena di fumi che non vengono dai comignoli delle case, né dalle stoppie bruciate nei campi ma da lontano, dalle foreste quasi morte e dalle colline innevate macchiate di corvi.

La città è area interdetta ma nessuno sorveglia, chiunque può entrare per le strade di accesso ma, una volta dentro, si è attanagliati dalla logica della divinazione e dal sostanziale irrapresentabile che, nel labirinto di astrazioni, cerca disperatamente l’uscita. Le tracce e gli indizi della genialità, celati dai segni più espliciti delle venerate idiozie sono ovunque, tutti intelligentemente dissimili dentro la stessa frode e tutti tristemente fedeli alle tracce perenni non ancora svuotate di trasmissione e di senso. Da dietro ogni angolo si sparge il fluido prodigioso della follia nel corpo sostanziale delle presenze già deformate dal male secreto dal corpo astrale, creatore di incubi.

L’angoscia si riversa nella sacralità della lepidezza sui generis che ristagna nei luoghi dell’essere coincidenti con la lebbra o l’amenità dei luoghi. Cibarie e barili sono sparsi un po’ ovunque: la popolazione teofagica sembra profondamente immersa dentro l’idea del nutrimento e del suo mistero metabolico.

L’opera mi aveva catturato dentro quella vicenda pitturale del tempo, aveva scavato nella mia inerzia per accendermi e quindi bruciare

l’indifferenza, ricordandomi il sacrosanto dovere del piacere nel contemplarla.

La mattina del giorno appresso, non avendo un catalogo ragionato per verificare l’esattezza della mia registrazione dei particolari del quadro e se avessi commesso qualche omissione, mi recai di corsa al museo e ne comprai uno. Lo sfogliai coscienziosamente e passai in rassegna tutti i dipinti che si trovavano nella sala di Bruegel. Con mia grande sorpresa constatai che la pittura così impressa nella mia memoria e da me analizzata nei particolari, non era riportata in quella guida del museo.

Eppure l’avevo osservato a lungo quel capolavoro marchiato dalla stigma inconfondibile della mano di quell’artista! Proprio di un Bruegel si trattava, ne ero certo; era quella l’opera che, di notte e a lungo, mi aveva impegnato in albergo.

Il catalogo che stavo consultando portava una data di stampa molto recente e la mia visita al museo risaliva al giorno precedente. Strano.

Tornai al museo. Nella sala di Bruegel non vidi il quadro che avevo ammirato a lungo il giorno prima. Feci scrupolosamente più volte l’intero percorso di tutti gli spazi alla ricerca del grande dipinto che, a questo punto, era diventato per me prezioso come una riserva mentale, un pensiero rivelatore di una qualche capacità, l’asso nella manica che tieni in serbo per i momenti difficili. Ad alcuni guardiani catatonici, cercando di descrivere alla meglio quella pittura e mostrando loro gli appunti della notte passata, chiesi dove fosse finito il dipinto. Erano stupiti ma contenti: avvertivano che qualcosa stava per accadere dentro il mortorio di quelle sale asfittiche dove regna afasia. Un po’ insospettiti dai miei balbettii in una lingua incomprensibile e dai miei gesti concitati che non facevano intendere niente, pensando di trovarsi alla presenza di uno squilibrato, scambiandosi occhiate significative, si stringevano nelle spalle. Volli parlare col direttore del museo, persona dall’aria gentile che parlava bene la mia lingua. Dopo avere ascoltato pazientemente la descrizione del capolavoro e data un’occhiata distratta ai disegni che avevo dispiegato sulla scrivania,

con un certo imbarazzo, mi consigliò di dimenticare quella complessità allegorica: sospettava sintomi di origine nervosa, forse un crollo. Mi congedò insinuando timidamente che avrei dovuto riposarmi in albergo. Ma non posso essere liquidato così, su due piedi.

Continuo a descrivere i particolari del dipinto fatidico al direttore che, allibito, non ha il coraggio di contrastarmi; mi scruta coll’idea di uno che dice ma guarda come s’è ridotto questo con l’arte, arrossisce e arriccia il naso come avesse sentito una puzza improvvisa. È incerto se chiamare un custode, vorrebbe un testimone di tanta ostinazione; teme che questa si risolva in qualche aggressività. Insisto, voglio indurlo a confessare, deve dirmi dove è finita quell’opera fondamentale, dove è stata rimpiattata e perché è stata rimossa così in fretta durante la notte. Ad un tratto, gentile ma deciso, mi accompagna alla porta, la apre e col braccio teso mi fa cenno con fermezza di uscire rinnovando, questa volta meno timidamente, la sua preghiera: non avrei più dovuto pensare a quelle allegorie di un quadro che non esiste e sarei dovuto andare in albergo a riposarmi. L’imbarazzo comincia ad avere la meglio su di me; frugando nelle tasche della giacca con l’aria preoccupata di chi cerca qualcosa indispensabile al momento, provo a darmi un contegno, ma non faccio che aggravare la situazione. Il direttore, sulla soglia della sua stanza mi guarda sconcertato, afferra la maniglia della porta sbarrandomi il passo: non si sa mai, se mi fosse saltato in mente di rientrare dentro per continuare quella solfa. Disinvolto, continuo a riordinare in fretta e furia i disegni affastellandoli come si fa con le carte da giuoco sotto gli sguardi dei custodi che, nel frattempo, avidi di novità, sono accorsi a passi lesti per godersi la scena mentre, con gli occhi tondi, lottano con la voglia di ridere.

Finalmente avrebbero avuto qualcosa da raccontare: coi transistors incollati all’orecchio e le parole crociate in tasca, là dentro, il tempo non passa mai. Giro i tacchi e me ne vado verso l’uscita per trovare la distanza da quella mia recita vergognosa. Intanto continuo a frugarmi nelle tasche per far credere a tutti una qualche urgenza. Di colpo mi volto con l’inten-

zione di dire mi avete frainteso. Ma le parole che escono dalle mie labbra non si adattano a trasmettere l’elementare concetto in mia difesa, anzi, sono rafforzative del pensiero per cui sto battendo in ritirata perché dico scusate sono un po’confuso. Una colorazione complementare per la fondamentale dell’accaduto.

Lascio alle mie spalle quelli a bocca aperta.

Mi allontano con la volontà di avanzare nella direzione opposta a quella gente esterrefatta ma temo, nonostante la voglia di fuggire, di fare dietro front e andare verso di loro. Stringo i denti e mi auguro che la volontà di svignarmela non remi contro, come per le parole che non sono riuscito a dire in mia difesa, e non abbia il sopravvento.

Fuori dal museo non so più cosa pensare di me e di quel dipinto così impresso nella mia mente. Seduto su una panchina comincio a raccontarmi pacatamente che potrei aver preso un granchio. Ci vado coi piedi di piombo per evitare lo shock di un’improvvisa rivelazione. Non senza sforzo, alla fine, mi impongo il concetto assente: quel quadro non è mai esistito, eppure il suo spettro è pure opera.

La Storia universale non mi è d’aiuto, l’intuizione mi buggera ma non m’abbandona.

Credo nell’esistenza dell’ottava meraviglia, anche se su questa circolano voci contraddittorie. Il mondo è pieno di meraviglie, altro che otto, come dicono. Il capolavoro che ho meditato nei particolari ormai esiste. Non ho sognato, è frutto di un’immaginario scaturito da un’immaginario, è la traccia di un divenire avvenuto nelle regioni contemplative profonde del Modo, dove percepiamo la rotondità della sfera celeste che ci contiene e imprigiona la nostra curiosità libertina di penetrarla per vivere quello che c’è oltre. Allora a un immaginario potrebbe seguirne un altro, così come dall’abisso muto della parola nasce un’altra parola, e un’altra ancora, all’infinito. Ho prodotto e proiettato la vita simbolica di una visione, mi sono lasciato catturare da questa e più mi sono fatto imprigionare, rinchiudere all’interno della concretezza dell’opera, più ho anelato al fuori cercando di carpire quello che l’opera mi tace. Così erro altrove, in cerca

della Sfinge senza segreto, aldilà della quale c’è il deserto arido del coraggio che non ho avuto e dei sogni che non mi sono regalato in faccia all’Arte.

Ho concepito un fuoriquadro. Sono certo che se fossi stato capace di cristallizzare quella mia fantasia confezionando un altro Bruegel che non esiste, creando un reale dipinto, poi mi sarei autorizzato a sognarne un altro, e poi un altro ancora…tutti scaturiti dal tracciato di immagini godute in precedenza, incise nella memoria, trasformate in altra futura indelebile memoria.

L’opera è solo la denuncia dell’opera. Ma nel labirinto cerebrale nel quale mi ha immesso, i criteri, inchiodati al divenire continuo delle forme, sono tutti protesi a trovare una via di fuga, la salvezza che porta dritta alla rottura di un livello sensoriale dentro la sostanza corporea dell’opera stessa. Esiliato nel punto infinitamente lontano dal suo cuore, l’opera mi consegna dalla sua centralità fisica alla centralità esterna, ideale, del suo stesso segreto, verso l’esperienza di un vuoto dove, in assenza di segni, prolifero segni. La questione è delicata. Dentro ogni divagazione negata, ogni rinuncia, s’annida il sospetto più che fondato che ogni divieto di sognare coincida coll’osservanza: conca vuota e pulita in cui si rovescia il flusso impuro dei segni che assicurano la continuità delle opinioni correnti. È lì che fermenta la certezza delle demenze volontarie dell’artista.

In arte una cosa è anche un’altra cosa. È descrizione di un rispecchiamento che la realtà ci nega perché questa non proietta rispecchiamenti, ce li dobbiamo immaginare. Non c’è soggetto che non si faccia tentare dal rischio seducente di addentrarsi dentro il labirinto le cui pareti sono specchi deformanti. In cerca della propria identità procede e torna sui propri passi finchè non ha più coscienza di sé, del proprio profilo, ma registra solo la propria deformazione che ha letto nell’aberrazione riflessa dalle pareti specchianti. Alla fine si crede la deformazione che vede. L’attraversamento di senso germina nella nuova attuazione di una forma che contiene in sé il

futuro della forma non attuata ancora. L’Arte incontra il Modo che sarà puntualmente tradito per una proiezione a venire. Si affaccia ai bordi dell’abisso di senso rintanato in ogni cosa: la vertigine nasconde la consolazione di precipitare giù verso l’origine oscura della Forma, verso il desiderio di non essere quel profilo, la consapevolezza piena di essere non-forma.

Dentro l’opera incrocio il desiderio del fuori, esteriorità radicale, come se il premio per la qualità della mia vibrazione consistesse nell’approdare al punto più arrischiato di quel desiderio, zona d’intimità, là dove continuare a procedere è impossibile, dove mi avverto lontano dai tracciati dimostrativi della stesura e dal genere che si crede di praticare. È là che voglio sostare, a qualche metro al di sopra del trambusto disperato degli asini quando penso che è tutto finito e tutto deve cominciare ancora, sia che ti trovi dentro un cataclisma escatologico o dentro un nirvana presocratico. Va pure bene una morte senza tomba, purchè finisca la pena di una vita senza la dignità anarchica della sprezzatura. Dubitare e tradire è sfuggire alla perversità della vocazione, è rinunciare a quel talento naturale che ti trascina verso la trappola del miraggio identitario di un profilo deciso, minaccia d’eternità. Fortunatamente ho una misera cognizione di me stesso. Ma forse la possibilità d’una osservazione del mondo interiore non c’è, come ne esiste una del mondo esterno che ci frastorna, ci distrae con le forme e gli eventi: fosfeni che continuano anche nel buio del sonno a dare spettacolo e a proiettare la mutazione figurale eterna.

L’eros sempre rinnovato nel contatto coi soggetti ingenera il turbamento del suo nulla dal cui sentimento nasce la creazione perpetuata. È la scommessa dell’alchimista, incarnazione rinnovata di una fede cieca, profonda connessione di furbizia e balordaggine che, nell’anelito di potenza e irriducibile delirio, storpia il senso comune e fa sì che una cosa, dall’esistenza apparentemente innocua, diventi, nel suo trasformismo, imprevedibile come un male di cui non si conosce l’origine. Aristotelica stèresis: tutto ciò che una cosa non è ancora ma

puo essere per sua natura. È l’oro alchemico celato dentro un coan visivo, tema marchiato dall’impraticabile dubbio senza il suo satori. È il fuoriquadro.

So di avere un progetto iniziale: credermi dentro una vita senza alcun progetto. Ma so anche che ho messo in bilico la mia esistenza dentro le quattro mura dello studio qualche volta nel respingerlo, altre volte nel soddisfarlo, quell’intento, lottando però sempre contro o per esso, un combattimento senza regole e a mani nude, ma pieno di vita. L’Arte Tiranna ha rinchiuso molti artisti inquieti nelle galere dai soffitti troppo bassi dove hanno dovuto piegare la testa per stare in piedi, sperando

in qualche commutazione della pena, per tornare alla libertà vigilata delle copie a vita dei soggetti-oggetti della modernità. Solo nei campi illegali della legge è possibile coltivare il frutto della mente nostalgica che vorrebbe riappropiarsi del potere magico emanato e ormai disperso dell’opera. Amen.

Il tono da predica di quanto detto è proprio dell’artista in età avanzata, è come un pugile sonato a riposo: ne ha buscate ma, se può raccontarlo, vuol dire che qualche Modo o qualcuno, ha provvidenzialmente gettato la spugna in extremis per salvargli la pelle.

Il Narrenschiff è un poema moralistico-satirico scritto dal teologo umanista Sebastian Brant.

La prima pubblicazione risale al 1494, in seguito l’opera fu tradotta in latino col titolo di Stultifera Navis. Il testo è un’accusa ai vizi e al malcostume di quel tempo. I folli che costituiscono l’equipaggio della nave sono personificazioni di varie dissolutezze; l’autore parla per voce loro e quindi condanna e critica severamente, con la disinvoltura propria della follia, la società e la politica di quel periodo storico.

NOTA BIOGRAFICA Renato Ranaldi nasce nel 1941 a Firenze, dove frequenta l’accademia di Belle Arti, diplomandosi in pittura nel 1962. È attraverso una pittura costituita da spesse masse di colore a olio che si caratterizza una prima forma di espressione artistica, mostrando immediatamente l’attenzione verso l’accostamento di differenti stilemi linguistici. Attraverso la molteplice sperimentazione di tecniche e materiali, la sua attenzione si rivolge con particolare interesse al disegno, dal quale scaturisce anche il suo lavoro plastico. Nel corso degli anni sessanta approfondisce l’interesse per la musica e per il disegno infantile; si lega con molti artisti che gravitano nella città di Firenze e condivide con Andrea Granchi e Sandro Chia l’esperienza del Teatro Musicale Integrale. Sono gli anni dei primi viaggi in Europa (Inghilterra, Francia) e America, ed è anche il momento della prima esperienza cinematografica con Senilix (1968) quando ha luogo la prima mostra personale alla galleria La Zattera di Firenze a cura di Claudio Popovich.

Seguendo una via personale, non influenzata dalle tendenze artistiche del momento (minimalismo, pop art, arte povera) entra negli anni Settanta con un repertorio di opere estranee agli schemi del linguaggio corrente, che trovano lontane referenze con pittura e scultura della grande tradizione e tracce delle sperimentazioni del Novecento. Sono gli anni in cui stringe amicizia con gli artisti Fernando Melani, Donatella Giuntoli, Luciano Fabro e il critico Bruno Corà.

Nel 1979 esegue la prima fusione in bronzo, l’Archetipo, forma delle forme, e dagli inizi degli anni Ottanta, con opere di grandi dimenzioni, espone in numerose mostre pubbliche e private (Modena: galleria Mazzoli; Bologna: galleria Fabibasaglia; Macerata: Pinacoteca e Musei comunali; Firenze: antologica nella Sala d’Arme di Palazzo Vecchio, Villa Romana, galleria Vivita; Malmo: mostra antologica alla Konsthall) e nel 1988 viene invitato alla XLIII alla Biennale di Venezia con una sala monografica.

Dagli anni Novanta, attraverso una ricchissima creazione di sculture (dove utilizza laminati di zinco, rame, ottone, realizzando spesso opere alle quali si affiancano masse di colore, a dare la suggestione di una pittura scolpita) cui si lega costantemente la necessità interiore del tracciare segni sulla carta, si afferma nel novero degli artisti italiani contemporanei di maggiore interesse, con esposizioni personali in gallerie private e musei in Italia (Ravenna: Pinacoteca comunale; Firenze: galleria Gentili; Perugia: Opera; Pistoia: palazzo Fabroni) e all’estero (Los Angeles:Convention Center; Parigi: Gran Palais, FIAC; Fresnes: Maison d’Art Contemporain Chaillioux; Vienna: galleria Christine Konig).

BIOGRAPHISCHE NOTIZ Renato Ranaldi wird 1941 in Florenz geboren, wo er die Akademie für Schöne Künste besucht und diese 1962 mit dem Diplom in Malen abschließt.

Seine erste künstlerische Ausdrucksform ist durch eine Maltechnik gekennzeichnet, die aus dicken Ölfarbenmassen besteht. Sie zeigt sofort sein Augenmerk auf die Kombination unterschiedlicher sprachlicher Stilelemente. Über vielfältiges Experimentieren mit Techniken und Materialien richtet sich seine Aufmerksamkeit mit besonderem Interesse auf die Zeichnung, der auch seine plastische Arbeit entspringt. Im Laufe der Sechziger Jahre vertieft er sein Interesse für Musik und Kinderzeichnung; er arbeitet mit vielen Künstlern zusammen, die nach Florenz streben und teilt mit Andrea Granchi und Sandro Chia die Erfahrung des Integralen Musiktheaters. Es sind die Jahre der ersten Reisen in Europa (England, Frankreich) und nach Amerika und es ist der Moment der ersten Kinoerfahrung mit Senilix (1968), in dem auch seine erste persönliche Ausstellung in der Galerie La Zattera in Florenz stattfindet, die von Claudio Popovich betreut wird.

Auf seinem ganz persönlichen Weg, ohne sich durch die künstlerischen Tendenzen des Moments (Minimalismus, Pop Art, Arte Povera) beeinflussen zu lassen, betritt er die Siebziger Jahre mit einem Repertoire an Werken, die außerhalb der Schemata der aktuellen Sprache der Kunst liegen und ferne Bezugspunkte in der Malerei und Bildhauerei der großen Tradition finden, sowie Spuren der Experimente aus dem Zwanzigsten Jahrhundert aufweisen. Es sind dies die Jahre, in denen er mit den Künstlern Fernando Melani, Donatella Giuntoli, Luciano Fabro und mit dem Kritiker Bruno Corà Freundschaft schließt.

1979 stellt er seinen ersten Bronzeguss fertig, den Archetyp, die Form der Formen, und ab Beginn der Achtziger Jahre stellt er großformatige Werke in zahlreichen öffentlichen und privaten Ausstellungen aus (Modena: Galerie Mazzoli; Bologna: Galerie Fabibasaglia; Macerata: Pinakothek und Gemeindemuseen; Florenz: anthologische Ausstellung in der Sala d’Arme des Palazzo Vecchio, Villa Romana, Galerie Vivita; Malmö: anthologische Ausstellung in der Konsthall); 1988 wird er zur XLIII. SHORT BIOGRAPHY Renato Ranaldi was born in 1941 in Florence, where he attended the Academy of Fine Arts, graduating in painting in 1962.

It was through painting consisting of thick masses of oil colour that he first expressed his form of art, immediately showing his attention towards combining different styles of language. While experimenting a range of techniques and materials, his attention turned with particular interest towards drawing, which also gave rise to his plastic work. During the 1960s, his interest in music and child-like drawing intensified; he became involved with many artists who gravitated around the city of Florence and shared the Teatro Musicale Integrale experience with Andrea Granchi and Sandro Chia. This was the period of his first trips to Europe (England and France) and America, and it was also the time of his first film experience with Senilix (1968) and his first solo exhibition, curated by Claudio Popovich and held at La Zattera gallery in Florence.

Following his own personal path, not influenced by the artistic trends of the time (minimalism, pop art and arte povera), he began the 1970s with a repertoire of works outside the mould of the artistic language of the time, instead making distant references to the great Italian tradition of painting and sculpture of with traces of twentieth-century experimentalism. It was during this period that he forged friendships with the artists Fernando Melani, Donatella Giuntoli, Luciano Fabro and the art critic Bruno Corà.

In 1979 he made his first bronze fusion, Archetipo, and made forms. From the beginning of the 1980s, he exhibited large-sized works in numerous public and private shows (Modena: Galleria Mazzoli; Bologna: Galleria Fabibasaglia; Macerata: Pinacoteca and the municipal museums; Florence: anthological exhibition in the Sala d’Arme in Palazzo Vecchio, Villa Romana, Galleria Vivita; Malmo: anthological exhibition at the Konsthall) and in 1988 he was invited to show a selection of his works at the XLIII Venice Biennale.

RENATO RANALDI - FUORIQUADRO Werner Meyer Tutta l’arte ruota intorno al proprio significato. Ispirati dai motivi del quadro interpretiamo le nostre percezioni e cerchiamo un senso possibile e sufficientemente chiaro. E se l’astrazione e l’intenzione del processo artistico conferiscono un senso più profondo alla forma e al colore, quindi al carattere materiale degli elementi dell’arte, allora si rispecchia nel quadro il pensiero artistico come scambio e come riflessione, come messa in discussione di tutto ciò che costituisce l’opera d’arte: il materiale, l’idea e il processo di metamorfosi. Nel caso in cui vorrà riformare e innovare, l’esperimento così effettuato spinge l’opera d’arte fuori dalle convenzioni accademiche e dai criteri che fino a quel momento erano a garanzia della buona arte. È così che per Renato Ranaldi, il quale parte dalla pittura su tavola, l’azione del quadro si sposta fuori dalla tela e oltre il margine inteso come orizzonte dei dipinti figurativi. Ciò conduce verso opere d’arte che indagano anche i propri fondamenti, in cui è fatto oggetto d’analisi il discorso stesso dell’arte, la tensione fra un’avanguardia che forza i confini e le prove critiche di dissoluzione – poiché ogni qualvolta si attraversa un confine c’è da attendersi il momento magico di un nuovo inizio, il senso proprio, inatteso, di ogni singola opera che debba continuare a vivere.

Nella serie dei Fuoriquadro Renato Ranaldi ha disposto il colore, e dunque il gesto della pittura, fuori dallo spazio della tela. Questa nuova serie, la più vasta dell’artista, è caratterizzata da una sorta di addensamento, di accumulo – se lo consideriamo dal punto di vista della storia della pittura – di colore raggrumato e imploso fuori dalla superficie, dove l’azione pittorica e in fondo plastica del soggetto rappresentato dal colore viene posta al margine del consueto campo d’operazioni della pittura su tela. Una volta di più l’atelier sarà il laboratorio alchemico in cui si riscrive la struttura, e al contempo il segreto e il mito della negazione. La pittura sembra reagire come Dafne: prima che Apollo, pazzo d’amore, la possieda come forma sulla tela – in virtù dell’eros dell’immaginazione –, la pittura, più concretamente il colore, si sottrae a questa presa e ritorna al suo stato originario. I grumi di materia cromatica, fuggiti dalla superficie e dagli imperativi dell’immaginazione bidimensionale in direzione della periferia, costretti – fuori dal tubetto o dalla tavolozza – sui margini della tela preparata e fissata sul telaio la lasciano intonsa.

Senza trascurare l’oggettualità e la manifesta esistenza dell’opera d’arte, occorrerà prendere sul serio questa idea: la tesi del nesso che unisce la tela vuota e i grumi di colore in quanto gesto riflessivo. La tela vergine, semplicemente preparata, è da intendersi come simbolo, superficie su cui si proietta la memoria, la storia della pittura. L’artista, con il suo pensiero e la sua prassi, la supera in senso hegeliano: ossia custodisce e al tempo stesso nega la pittura, mentre oltrepassa un confine, lasciandosela alle spalle. Renato Ranaldi traduce tutto ciò nel gesto di addensare il colore in grumi amorfi, facendoli aderire alla superficie senza stenderli, senza riempire la tela di spazio immaginario. Così egli conduce di nuovo la pittura in una situazione precaria, entro un’esistenza marginale originata dalla negazione di ogni presunto valore, di ogni presunta regola o classificazione dell’arte. L’identificarsi in tale gesto, il suo ossessivo ritorno nella serie di questi Fuoriquadro, va di pari passo con la crisi, con la catarsi che crea distanza, la cui necessaria premessa è quella di ripensare l’opera su tela. Nella produzione di Renato Ranaldi il telaio è un tema ricorrente e sempre variato. Esso rappresenta la delimitazione reale e materiale del campo d’azione dell’arte, è un concetto metaforico che sottintende il riparo, la sicurezza, l’integrità dell’immaginazione artistica, ed è in esso che si evidenzia il travalicamento di un confine. Allo stesso tempo, con questo gesto l’artista guadagna una forma di distanza da tutto quanto per lui è pittura all’interno del telaio. Si è veramente artisti quando si riflette su tutto ciò e, insieme, si forzano i confini dell’arte. Stare al contempo dentro e fuori dall’opera usando gli strumenti dell’arte: essere oltre la pittura con gli strumenti della pittura, è questo il fascino irresistibile dell’identità e della passione artistica così com’è intesa da Ranaldi nella tradizione dell’avanguardia.

«Sono scultore, ma mi vergogno tanto»1, è una frase dell’artista citata da Bruno Corà, e nell’apparente ironia si manifesta la spinta verso la tridimensionalità, la hybris del pittore che vuole superare i limiti stabiliti e trasformare la pittura in scultura. È attratto dagli equilibri precari, se a proposito dei Fuoriquadro dice: «Adopero il colore come fosse fango. Quando dipingo faccio scultura, e quando dò forma a una scultura, invece, ecco che dipingo».2 Già in opere quali Pittura scolpita (1991) Ranaldi ha steso mani così pesanti di colore da riuscire a modellarlo plasticamente quasi fosse materiale per una scultura. La storia dell’arte

prosegue anche con questi mezzi. Al centro del discorso, ancora una volta, è l’antagonismo tra pittura e scultura come forza generatrice di forma.

Alcuni lavori appartenenti alla serie dei Fuoriquadro o al loro contesto, mostrano come il colore possa essere sostituito da oggetti che hanno subìto una trasformazione. Con Odradek (2007) si presenta fin nel titolo un richiamo letterario alla parabola forse più nota e misteriosa di Franz Kafka: Il cruccio del padre di famiglia. La manovella fissata all’oggetto in bronzo offre un’evidente somiglianza con quell’entità difficile da descrivere, chiamata Odradek, che nella breve parabola si aggira per l’edificio della casa paterna.

Odradek è insieme un oggetto e una creatura, una figura astratta impossibile da classificare: entro l’edificio della casa paterna (innestato nello spazio e nel tempo, nell’ordine e nel senso) essa incarna il principio dell’assurdo, la domanda mantenuta aperta intorno al significato. Ranaldi include tale paradosso nella complessa struttura di un’opera d’arte, introduce quella richiesta di significato e la sua futura sopravvivenza (come in Il cruccio del padre di famiglia) nell’arte tout court. Il grumo di colore o la forma plastica astratta è la metafora che sta per Odradek nel complesso edificio dell’arte in generale e nell’opera di Renato Ranaldi in particolare.

Quando si parla di pittura oltre la tela fissata su una telaio, dunque di spazio oltre l’immagine, il pensiero corre subito a Lucio Fontana: con il suo Concetto spaziale, Fontana dotò la pittura e la scultura di un continuum spaziale che si sviluppava autonomamente e trascendeva i confini dell’opera d’arte come oggetto. Nei suoi Tagli – prodotti a partire dal 1958 – veniva aperta la tela monocroma attraverso degli squarci, schiudendo nella superficie della pittura una profondità plastica, dapprincipio in modo intuitivo, e in seguito sistematicamente e con la precisione di una lama di rasoio. Mentre Lucio Fontana distrugge l’integrità della tela come portatrice d’immagini, ultima ratio del quadro monocromo, Ranaldi riporta la tela alla sua condizione originaria – di superficie prima della pittura – con l’applicazione di colore ai margini esterni del quadro, quale ammasso plastico e significante. E ciò al fine di dare alla pittura – con un gesto che può inizialmente apparire iconoclasta – una spazialità realizzata in una modalità finora sconosciuta, oltre l’immaginaria costruzione spaziale sulla superficie del quadro. Così, nell’opera di Ranaldi, il discorso intorno alla pittura viene condotto all’esterno del telaio.

Varrà la pena dare un ultimo sguardo alla serie. Ranaldi definisce il Fuoriquadro 16 (2010) come «decisamente impressionista» – il colore trasporta oltre i limiti del quadro la sua forza di trasformazione sul piano percettivo, inteso in senso pienamente pittorico. Ciascun quadro della serie ha una propria fisionomia, un suo carattere, e offre sempre nuove variazioni su di un motivo. Quanto è messo in scena come gesto concettuale è al contempo aperto alla multiforme, complessa esperienza del simile, che non è mai solo la ripetizione dello stesso. È questo il segreto dinamico della serie.

RESTO CANTABILE José Jiménez Renato Ranaldi stesso ha descritto il percorso che lo ha condotto alla sua scoperta: il fuoriquadro. La visita a un museo, luogo di accumulazione e di sintesi, di pericolose emozioni, a prima vista occulte, può provocare nell’occhio nervoso e superconcentrato dell’artista il più intenso grado di perturbazione animica.

Sindrome di Stendhal1 dinanzi a uno stato della nostra cultura, tanto densamente popolata di immagini, citazioni e riverberi del senso, da lasciare appena spazio libero allo sguardo vergine del creatore.

“Ho prodotto e proiettato” – scrive Ranaldi – “la vita simbolica di una visione, mi sono lasciato catturare da questa e più mi sono fatto imprigionare, rinchiudere all’interno della concretezza dell’opera, più ho anelato al fuori cercando di capire quello che l’opera mi tace.” È interessante che l’artista che provoca tale visione simbolica sia proprio Pieter Bruegel “il Vecchio”, uno dei pittori che più intensamente accumula motivi e figure nelle eterogenee composizioni dei suoi quadri, particolarmente in quelli che hanno come motivo scene della vita quotidiana. Leggendo il racconto di Ranaldi, subito mi è venuto in mente un passo dell’ottimo libro di Daniel Arasse Il dettaglio2 che si riferisce proprio a Bruegel. Arasse segnala, come peraltro indica frequentemente nel suo Libro della pittura, pubblicato a Haarlem nel 1604 il grande artista, poeta e teorico olandese Karel Van Mander, che “sono i dettagli più secondari a suscitare talvolta maggior piacere”. E immediatamente aggiunge: “Bruegel è detto ‘Pietro il Buffo non solo perché faceva, alla maniera di Hieronymus Bosch, ‘quadri fantastici o grotteschi’, ma anche perché tali ‘stranezze’ si ritrovano sotto forma di dettagli in altri quadri”. Ciò che si considera “strano” è la mescolanza, il porre dei dettagli fuori contesto, l’introduzione, ad esempio, di motivi comici non in scene della vita quotidiana bensì in quadri di tema religioso. Ma aldilà di questo, ciò che mi interessa è quanto Arasse afferma poi: “dalla fascinazione [per il dettaglio], lo spettatore può alla fine passare al desiderio di ritagliare l’opera.”3 Fascinazione dell’appropriarci di ciò che in uno scenario complesso ed eterogeneo ci interpella, parla direttamente a noi: desiderio di ritagliarlo.

La visione di Ranaldi, fugace, fuggitiva, ha tuttavia la persistenza di un’ossessione. Il dettaglio che lo interpella e l’ossessiona è, comunque, un’assenza, un vuoto: il quadro che aveva visto non sta dove l’aveva visto. Si tratta, allora, della visione di un fantasma, di un quadro irreale che, intensamente presente, scompare repentinamente dalla vista. Scrive Ranaldi: “quel quadro non è mai esistito, eppure il suo spettro è pure opera”. Forse il problema ha a che vedere con i limiti, con la delimitazione della pittura, che abitualmente ci viene offerta inquadrata e protetta da una cornice. In un saggio breve ma bello, “Meditazione sulla cornice”, del 1921, José Ortega y Gasset ci dice: “I quadri vivono nelle cornici. Questa associazione di quadro e cornice non è accidentale. L’uno ha bisogno dell’altra. Un quadro senza cornice ha l’aria di un uomo svestito e nudo. Il suo contenuto sembra rovesciarsi fuori dei quattro lati della tela e disfarsi nell’atmosfera.”4 La cornice servirebbe, allora, per permettere l’ingresso “nella realtà” a quella dimensione irreale, immaginaria che costituisce l’opera artistica. Secondo Ortega y Gasset: “L’opera d’arte è un’isola immaginaria che fluttua, circondata dalla realtà da ogni parte. Perché si produca è, dunque, necessario che il corpo estetico resti isolato dall’ambiente vitale.

Dalla terra che calpestiamo alla terra dipinta non possiamo transitare poco a poco.”5 Cornice o no, senza un elemento che la isoli e la delimiti, l’opera d’arte si dissiperebbe materialmente, probabilmente potrebbe continuare ad essere opera ma con un carattere spettrale, come ci dice Ranaldi.

Un’esperienza concreta è venuta a offrirmi una nuova prospettiva sulla questione. Visitando al Museo del Louvre di Parigi una mostra sull’arte e la cultura russa dal titolo Sainte Russie, mi sono sentito affascinato da una bellissima icona: San Giorgio che abbatte il drago, del secondo quarto del XV secolo, e che oggi è conservata nel Museo Russo di San Pietroburgo. A parte la bellezza e l’equilibrio della composizione, con gli stilizzati corpi di San Giorgio e del suo cavallo bianco, a richiamare la mia attenzione è stato un dettaglio molto concreto: nella parte superiore, il dipinto travalicava il limite della cornice, utilizzandola anche come supporto. Il dinamismo in diagonale della composizione colloca una parte della mano di San Giorgio e della lancia, così come un frammento dell’aureola del Santo, nella cornice stessa, trasmettendo la sensazione che il dipinto potrebbe spostarsi al di là del quadro. Di nuovo, pensavo a Ortega y Gasset che, spiegando il predominio storico della cornice dorata nella nostra tradizione culturale per il fatto che dà una maggior quantità di riflessi, scrive: “Il riflesso non è di ciò che riflette né di ciò che si riflette, ma piuttosto un qualcosa fra le cose, spettro senza materia.”6

Ciò significa che il travalicamento dei limiti del dipinto, l’utilizzo della cornice stessa come supporto dell’opera, condurrebbe quest’ultima ad una condizione spettrale, la situerebbe in una sorta di terra di nessuno. Ciò potrebbe aiutarci a comprendere meglio quanto Ranaldi racconta nella sua narrazione e il processo che gli ha consentito di concepire il fuoriquadro. Ho pensato, immediatamente, ad una specie di svuotamento o, meglio, di spoliazione. Ed ho realizzato una semplice operazione con la riproduzione dell’icona, tentando di vedere cosa restava dell’immagine se conservavamo soltanto il dettaglio del dipinto sulla cornice: Il risultato mi è apparso di una nitidezza meravigliosa: i frammenti di pittura continuavano a mantenere una grande forza espressiva, segni di una scena che permaneva al di fuori della portata della vista. Resto, ma forse resto costitutivo di senso, esattamente come Paul Celan definisce la poesia: residuo o resto cantabile, singbarer Rest. I frammenti di olio o acrilico che Ranaldi colloca ai margini dei quadri, della bianca tela vuota e senza cornice, parlano anch’essi lo stesso linguaggio. Negazione di una pittura meramente illusionistica, registro radicale di una visione nella quale l’opera si svuota per dar forma al momento primigenio, a ciò che rimane, come resto o residuo di senso, quando si elimina tutto l’accidentale. Tutto gravita sul dettaglio, emancipato dall’insieme in un modo non molto diverso da quanto riscontriamo in Bruegel.

Solo che qui, in Ranaldi, il dettaglio assume la forma del frammento, quell’atomizzazione degli universi di senso e della rappresentazione che, dalla grande rivoluzione romantica, è di stimolo a quanto di migliore vi è nell’arte del nostro tempo. Un’arte critica, non conciliativa, che mette in discussione la realtà e i diversi spazi di potere e dominio.

Ernst Bloch, il grande filosofo dell’utopia, afferma ne Il Principio Speranza: “senza questa potenza per il frammento, la fantasia estetica avrebbe, certamente, sufficiente intuizione nel mondo, più di qualsiasi altra percezione umana, ma non avrebbe, in ultimo termine, correlato”7, giacché senza quella dimensione di frammentazione, di rottura delle immagini stabilite dal reale, l’arte risulterebbe limitata a una funzione di mera riproduzione dell’esistente, a semplice ornamento. Il frammento permette di intravedere un qualcosa che forse ancora non è, o non è pienamente, ma che può arrivare ad essere. E in ciò si inserisce la funzione e la capacità dell’arte di interrogare lo stato di cose esistente, di situare il nostro sguardo e la nostra comprensione delle cose sul terreno delle domande, della messa in discussione, e non su quello della mera accettazione passiva. “Mai concluso” – dice ancora Bloch – “e per questo è assai conveniente che la vernice del troppo bello salti”8.

La stessa posizione estetica che incontriamo nei fuoriquadro compare anche nei pezzi scultorei di Ranaldi, nella serie chiamata Axis, interventi minimi, sottili, apparentemente fuori contesto, letteralmente fuori dal quadro e senza cornice. In questi, troviamo un segno allusivo di quel simbolo primordiale presente in varie culture umane, l’axis mundi, che viene concepito come asse cosmico, come punto di unione del cielo e della terra. In una delle sue raccolte di aforismi, intitolata Grani di Polline (1797-1798), Novalis afferma: “Abbiamo una missione: siamo chiamati alla formazione dell’orbe”9. Questo gruppo di intense opere di Renato Ranaldi, capaci di risvegliare il più alto grado di emozione, tutte quante gravitanti nell’asse del fuoriquadro, costituiscono frammenti esplosivi, alvei di senso, piccoli bagliori di un mondo che verrà. Solo così, unicamente attraverso un’estetica del frammento, l’arte può aprire la strada ad un’estetica formativa ma non conciliativa. Nella singolarità irripetibile del frammento risuona o riverbera l’universale in modo non totalizzante, e si apre la possibilità della formazione di un orbe sulla singolarità di una condivisione non totalizzante. Questi piccoli segni, fuoriquadro, non sono soltanto il resto cantabile di una pittura non visibile, bensì molto di più, fungono da limite o riserva morale e conoscitiva della memoria della nostra civiltà.

In Wahrheit ist die Malerei eine Mentalität, die in und außerhalb der Bilder überlebt.

I. Seit einiger Zeit sind, während die Maler über die endgültige Kapitulation nachdenken, die Bildhauer bereit für eine neue Eroberung des Raums. In Renato Ranaldis Werkserie Fuoriquadro treffen diese beiden Tendenzen im Sein/Nichtsein des Künstlers als tragischer Seiltänzer aufeinander.

Nachdem er eine ‚skulpturale Malerei’ konzipiert und realisiert, also einem Oxymoron Gestalt verliehen hat, das den größtmöglichen Widerspruch darstellt und doch bildnerischen Formen, die das Ende ihrer repräsentativen und sogar präsentativen Möglichkeiten erreicht hatten, neues Leben einhauchen konnte, gelangt Ranaldi nach rund einem halben Jahrhundert künstlerisch-poetischer Erfahrung an den äußersten Punkt seiner Exploration im Land des Nicht-Seins. Vor diesem neuen, in den letzten beiden Jahren entstandenen Werkzyklus stellt sich unmittelbar das Gefühl ein, einer Grenzerfahrung beizuwohnen, einer radikalen Maßnahme der räumlichen Umkehr, die umso riskanter ist, als sie, mit der unverwechselbaren Neigung Ranaldis zum labilen Gleichgewicht und zur Instabilität, in der expliziten Absicht erfolgt, die Malerei an den äußersten Rand der Fläche zu drängen, die den Grund für jeden Bedeutungsprozess bildet, hinaus aus der Sicherheitszone – aus Leinwand oder einem anderen Trägermaterial –, wo ein Bild das Licht der Welt erblicken könnte.

Es gibt bei der obsessiven Umsetzung der gedanklichen und bildlichen Vision eines Künstlers einen Moment, von dem an es kein Zurück mehr gibt – so ging es Claude Monet mit seinem Seerosen-Zyklus, Cézanne mit der Serie zur Montagne Saint-Victoire, Morandi mit seinen Stilleben und vielen anderen –, in dem alles, was den Zauber der Erschaffung eines Bildes ausmacht, sich aufzulösen scheint zugunsten einer grundsätzlicheren Frage, einer reductio ad extremis, die das Gesichtsfeld leerfegt bis auf einen ozeanischen Horizont ohne jede Spur irgendeiner Küstenlinie. Eine Annullierung des Gedankens, mehr noch als des Blicks ins Unendliche, die den Verzicht auf jeden tröstlichen Halt erfordert. Das ist das Stadium der Arbeit ohne Sicherheit, des Verzichts auf jede Vorsicht, der Zurückweisung jeder troubadourischen Hoffnung, der Trapeznummer ohne Netz. Die vorgesehene finale Geste kündigt sich mit einem Ultimatum an, das nicht ohne weitere Präzisierungen bleibt, obwohl es definitiv ist: doch was wird es definieren?

I.1 Der Aufbau der Fuoriquadro ist von verblüffender Einfachheit; fast könnte man sie für die Überreste eines fleißigen Arbeitstags des Malers halten, an dem dieser sicher in irgendeiner Ecke seines Ateliers hart gearbeitet hat, um ein Werk zu erschaffen, das allen Regeln der Kunst und allen Erwartungen entspricht.

Und wie nach jedem arbeitsreichen Tag, könnte man sich vorstellen, hat der Maler, nachdem er das Werk von der Staffelei genommen hat, bevor er seine Arbeitskleider auszieht und sich die Hände wäscht, um nach Hause zu gehen, im Vorbeigehen mit entschiedenen und endgültigen Bewegungen an einer herumstehenden Leinwand abgestreift, was noch an Farbe an seinen Pinseln, Spachteln oder Stäben haftete, also sein Handwerkszeug gesäubert. Eine Geste, die im übrigen allen zueigen ist, die hochgradig zähes Material mit Werkzeugen bearbeiten, die sich zum Verstreichen und Verteilen eignen, wie Schaufeln, Löffel, Spachtel und anderes, also Eisverkäufern, Konditoren, Stukkateuren und eben auch Malern.

I.2 Ranaldis Werk Fuoriquadro, so wie es sich dem Blick darbietet, wenn es fertig ist, scheint im Prinzip aus einem Malgrund aus Leinwand zu bestehen, die auf einen Keilrahmen gespannt und einfach weiß grun-

diert ist, ohne irgendeine Darstellung oder Zeichnung, also ganz leer, bis auf vier oder fünf Stellen an den Seitenrändern, wo Klumpen von Farbe zu finden sind, die dann mit Spachtelbewegungen verteilt wurden.

Die Werkserie Fuoriquadro verdankt ihre Entstehung also einer elementaren Geste, die einfach bleibt, aber nicht einer perversen Logik entbehrt, die ihr aus einem semantischen Limbus Bedeutung zuweist, in dem der Maler die gesamte Kunstgeschichte betrachtet und studiert, an der er seine Gesten nicht ohne Unruhe schult und misst.

I.3 Fuoriquadro ist sichtbarer Ausdruck der extremistischen Absicht, die Malerei außerhalb der Ikone zu stellen, außerhalb des Periechon, hätte Villa gesagt, also außerhalb des Umschließenden. Was hervorgehoben und sichtbar gemacht, aber auch zur Diskussion gestellt wird, ist die Mitte der Bildfläche, zugunsten dessen, was diese umgibt. Die Malerei scheint nicht mehr auf der Fläche überzeugen zu wollen, auf der sie sich jahrhundertelang zeigte, sondern außerhalb davon. Angesiedelt außerhalb des Bildgebäudes, außerhalb des Mandala-Quadranten, außerhalb in der Art, wie sich die ausgeworfenen, ausgestoßenen Ungeheuer an die Mauern der gotischen Kathedralen klammern, bleibt die Malerei immer noch vieldeutig an das in facies geleerte Restbild gebunden. Sie scheint an eine anderswo positionierte Mitte anzuspielen, von der rund um das Bild einige Fragmente anzutreffen sind, die letzten Ausdrucksreste, zudem plastischer Art. I.4 Wenn „der Rahmen das Bild von allem trennt, was nicht Bild ist“ (Stoichita), so befindet sich in Ranaldis Fuoriquadro (für das zudem kein Rahmen vorgesehen ist) die sorgfältig an einigen Stellen des Leinwandrahmens aufgespachtelte Malerei im – und ist also – ‚Nicht-Bild’. In den aktuellen Werken Ranaldis, diesen Leinwänden ohne Zeichnung und Farbe, ist das Bild also die leergelassene Malfläche und das Nicht-Bild die Malerei in Form der plastischen Elemente, die vom Gemälde in den Raum vorspringen. Doch können wir uns im Namen der Malerei wahrhaftig mit diesen hermeneutischen Ergebnissen begnügen?

I.5 Das Fuoriquadro als räumliches Vorstellungskonzept ragt vom Bild in den freien Raum hinaus, während es sich in Wirklichkeit daran klammert wie einer, der über dem Abgrund hängt, aber nicht loslässt. Es bleibt an den festen Grund gebunden. Das Fuoriquadro ist daher nicht etwas vollkommen im Raum Schwebendes.

Es steht zweifellos für einen weiteren Zustand des ‚labilen Gleichgewichts’ in Ranaldis Malerei, die so oft ihre Bedeutung aus einer solchen Anordnung bezieht, die, um den Eindruck des Riskanten zu erzielen, einen – noch so extremen – Haltepunkt benötigt.

II. Paradoxe sind Überlegungen, die gegen die vorherrschende Meinung verstoßen; sie sind sogar dazu da, dem gesunden Menschenverstand zu widersprechen. Das Paradox fordert ebenso wie der Zustand des ‚labilen Gleichgewichts’ den Gesprächspartner zu einer Überprüfung seiner Meinung heraus.

Es schien, als sei mit der Malerei von Cornelius Norbertus Gijsbrechts und seinem Nicht-Werk Rückseite eines Gemäldes (um 1675), heute im Staatlichen Kunstmuseum Kopenhagen, bereits der Endpunkt der Metamalerei erreicht, doch so ist es nicht, wenn Ranaldis Fuoriquadro die Malerei auf Vorderseite und Rückseite der Bildfläche verweigert und stattdessen außerhalb der Oberfläche präsentiert, die sonst Träger der Illusionsmaschine ist, und so zu dem Gedanken einlädt, dass der Prozess der Illusion nur im Kopf stattfindet, die Malerei also stets anderswo als im Bild zu finden ist.

II.1 Mit Fuoriquadro setzt sich Ranaldi mit einem Meta-Aspekt der (seiner) Malerei auseinander. Neigt er schon im allgemeinen dazu, jede Art von demonstrativer Malerei, also die Betonung und Hervorhebung des Könnens, der ‚Bravour’ des Künstlers zu meiden, um sich stattdessen den Notwendigkeiten der Darstellung zu beugen, so führt er hier in der Art, wie er die Farbe ‚aufträgt’, den Malakt an die Grenzen seiner Möglichkeiten.

In Fuoriquadro wird offensichtlich, wie sich durch aufeinanderfolgende Spachtelungen Farbe ansammelt und sich Gerinnsel bilden, die den Farbpasten eine plastische Valenz verleihen. Schon in der Vergangenheit hatte sich Ranaldi mit dem antinomischen Problem der ‚skulpturalen Malerei’ beschäftigt. Seine Serie Fuoriquadro bedeutet in Wirklichkeit einen weiteren Schritt auf diesem bereits früher eingeschlagenen Weg. Doch diesmal steht die Farbablagerung durch Spachtelungen nicht im Mittelpunkt des Werkes wie in Arche-tipo-pittura scolpita, 1991, in Sospeso, 1991, Pittura scolpita, 1991, oder wie in Naufragio, 2000, wo die Farb-

spachtelungen frei nebeneinander angeordnet sind und fast vollständig die Mitte des verwendeten hölzernen Malgrunds bedecken; in Fuoriquadro konzentrieren sie sich im Gegensatz dazu an den Rändern des Werks, an der äußeren Begrenzung der Leinwand, den Seiten, die die Geometrie des Bildes bestimmen.

Die Materie des Malers ist also in eine emblematische Randposition gerückt. Im Zentrum des Werks steht nichts als Leere.

II.2 Eine immer bei Ranaldi anzutreffende Verhaltensweise ist die Beachtung von Dingen, Objekten, Konstruktionen und Formen jeglicher Art, ebenso wie von Details, die dem gewöhnlichen Blick meist entgehen.

Oft verweilt er bei diesen Einzelheiten, die jeder andere für vernachlässigbar hält, für nebensächlich oder sogar bedeutungslos, und studiert ihre Gestalt, bis er jene hervorstechende Eigenschaft findet, von der er oft Gebrauch macht, um sie, entsprechend weiterentwickelt, für manche seiner gestalterischen Einfälle zu verwenden.

II.3 Die Details auf Bruegels Bildern werden von Karel van Mander als „drollig“ bezeichnet. „Als seltsam angesehen“, schreibt José Jimenez, „wird die Vermischung, die Verwendung von Details außerhalb ihres Zusammenhangs, etwa von komischen Motiven (…) in Bildern mit religiösen Themen.“ Ranaldis neueste Intuition stellt sich konsequent in eine Reihe mit vielen anderen seiner langen ‚devianten’ Karriere, die kritisch jeder stilistischen Anpassung aus dem Weg ging, die ihm stets ungeeignet zur Befriedigung seines Bedürfnisse nach Sinnumkehrung und Freiheit erschien.

Fuoriquadro ist der Vorsatz eines systematischen Verzichts auf den narrativen Aspekt des Bildes, das viele Gemälde maßgeblich ausmacht. Die Serie enttäuscht die Erwartung einer darstellenden Funktion, die hier von Anfang an unter Schach steht.

Eher als konstruktiv zur Sinnstiftung beizutragen, behaupten die an die Ränder des Keilrahmens gespachtelten Farbgerinnsel den Nonsens der immer schon x-ten, nie erschöpfenden Narration.

Wenn man – wie es opportun erscheint – die Erfahrung der Serie Fuoriquadro einer oppositiven, nicht konformen Auffassung zuschreibt, die im Übrigen einen beachtlichen Teil von Ranaldis Werk kennzeichnet, so muss man doch dieses neue (extreme) Kapitel seiner plastisch-malerischen Arbeiten als erklärten Vorsatz betrachten, dem Raum zusätzlich Räumliches hinzuzufügen.

II.4 Wie und Wo sind bei Ranaldi bewusste Entscheidungen, die mehr oder weniger Absicht verraten, die Darstellungsfläche des Bildes rein und unberührt zu erhalten. In vielen Fällen ist zu bemerken (und wurde bemerkt), dass Ranaldi seine Signatur an den unteren Rand des Bildes setzt, in die Mitte oder in eine der beiden Ecken. Auch auf den Zeichnungen findet sich seine kursive, zu einem Bogen gespannte Signatur im unteren Teil des Blattes. Bei der Serie Fuoriquadro bewegte Ranaldi die Notwendigkeit, den Ausschluss des malerischen Elements aus dem Bild als Bedeutungsprozess sichtbar zu machen, dazu, keinerlei Zeichen, also auch nicht seine Signatur, auf die Oberfläche der Leinwand zu setzen.

II.5 Wenn im Genre der Landschaftsmalerei – deren Gegenstand sich per Definition ‚jenseits’ des Bildes befindet – die unerlässliche Bedingung, der Gestalt verliehen werden muss, das Gefühl der Entfernung ist, so ist diese unerlässliche Bedingung im Falle von Ranaldis Fuoriquadro, dass sich die Malerei selbst außerhalb jener Fläche befindet, die traditionell für die Darstellung bestimmt ist. Und wenn in der Landschaftsmalerei die Vorstellung von Natur möglich ist, dank einer Konvention, die uns erlaubt, aus einem Innenraum heraus einen Außenraum en plain air zu betrachten, so will der Autor von Fuoriquadro als selbstverständlich voraussetzen, dass bei einem Gemälde die Malerei nicht das ist, was auf der Leinwand betrachtet werden kann, sondern ein Etwas, das sich anderswo befindet (also nicht notwendigerweise im Bild).

In seinem Text Fuoriquadro, den Ranaldi in Form einer Pseudoallegorie verfasste, um seine Theorie zu den Bildern mit demselben Titel (rund zwanzig Leinwände in verschiedenen Formaten) zu verdeutlichen, schreibt er: „Ich habe eine Vision zu symbolischem Leben erweckt und vorgeführt, ich habe mich von ihr gefangen nehmen lassen, und je mehr ich mich einschließen ließ in die Konkretheit des Werks, umso mehr strebte ich nach seinem Außen, um zu verstehen, was das Werk mir verschwieg.” Und weiter: „Das Werk ist nur die Ankündigung des Werks. (…) verweist mich das Werk von seinem physischen Zentrum an die äußere, ideale Zentralität seines Geheimnisses, an die Erfahrung einer Leere, deren Abwesenheit von Zeichen mich vor Zeichen überquellen lässt. Die Sache ist heikel.”1

Indem er behauptet, die Malerei sei nicht das, was sich auf der Bildfläche befindet, steht Ranaldi mit Fuoriquadro für eine neue räumlich-plastische Auffassung, die eine ungewohnte und recht bedeutungsvolle Position in der Kunstgeschichte darstellt. Es erscheint also opportun, sich zu fragen, wie er in diese semiologische Dimension vorgestoßen ist.

Dieser langsame und nicht immer offensichtliche, doch gewiss rhabdomantische Prozess, der einem authentischen und autonomen, ureigenen Bedürfnis entspringt, nimmt seinen Anfang in den 1970er Jahren.

III. Mehr und mehr wird die Leinwand zum ‚Hintergrund’ für verschiedene Kunststücke, die ihre Funktion umgehen und darauf ausgerichtet sind, sie aus ihrer kanonischen Rolle zu entlassen. Dies seit Ranaldi, ab Anfang der Siebziger Jahre, nach dem kurzgefassten Prinzip des Archetyps, nach dem jedes Etwas auch ein Anderes ist, seine malerische Logik von der Gleichung Malerei=Bild befreit und seine Arbeiten in voller konzeptueller und gestalterischer Freiheit konstruiert.

Zwischen 1971 und 1974 produziert Ranaldi eine Reihe von Arbeiten, die jeweils durch Kombination von zwei Bildern eine Ecke formen; die Bildflächen spielen eine im Grunde nebensächliche Rolle neben den Bedeutungskonstruktionen, die zwischen ihnen wie zwischen den Kulissen einer Bühne Form annehmen. In Riposo, 1973, hängt eine kleine Schaukel an einer dünnen Stange, die die Oberkanten zweiter Bilder verbindet; in Passaggio cromatico, 1973, verbindet ein Brückchen aus Holz und Schnur zwei Bilder, die chromatisch unterschiedlich behandelt sind. In diesen beiden Fällen erfahren die Leinwände, obschon für die Schaffung der räumlichen Voraussetzungen notwendig, anders als in anderen ‚Eck-Konstruktionen’ jener Jahre eine erhebliche Bedeutungsreduktion, da sie keinerlei relevante Spur irgendeiner Darstellung oder irgendeines Zeichens tragen, wenn man von der farbigen Behandlung des Malgrunds absieht.

Später, in den 1980er und 1990er Jahren, arbeitete Ranaldi mit einer Ausdauer, wie sie einem Grundbedürfnis zukommt, an der Entwicklung eines Konzepts des ‚labilen Gleichgewichts’, einer Intuition, die sein ganzes Werk durchzieht als riskanter Zustand, in den die Dinge versetzt werden, um unsere Aufmerksamkeit zu erregen. Diesem Prinzip zufolge zeichnen sich Werke wie Il delicato equilibrio di un artista, 1973, und später La discesa nel Maelström, 1982, Bilico, 1988, Bilico d’arte, 1995, und andere durch eine Belebtheit ihrer Ränder, Begrenzungen und Kanten aus, die den Ursprung des räumlichen Konzepts des Fuoriquadro markiert. In gewisser Weise wird die nebensächliche Rolle der Bildflächen in jenen Jahren auch in Werken wie Alessandrina, 1986, deutlich, in denen das zentrale Bedeutungselement außerhalb der Leinwand liegt, in diesem Fall in einem anatomischen Abguss aus Bronze, der die gesamte Plastik trägt.

Doch wie lange schon Ranaldi im Laufe der Jahre das Bedürfnis nach der gestalterischen Entleerung der Bildflächen seiner malerisch-plastischen Arbeiten in sich gehegt und gepflegt hat, intuitiv nach der ästhetischen Realität suchte, die in seiner Serie Fuoriquadro sichtbar wird, nämlich dass sich die Malerei grundsätzlich außerhalb des Bildes befindet, lässt sich objektiv nachprüfen anhand einer bemerkenswerten Zahl von Werken, die, jedes auf seine Weise, die in Fuoriquadro verwirklichten Möglichkeiten erkunden und vorwegnehmen.

Zum Kreis dieser Werke gehören, meiner Ansicht nach, Come circola il nero, 1992, ein großer Rahmen, in dem die Ölfarbe wie ein Spinnennetz über dem leeren Abgrund des Bildes hängt, Cache noir, 1992, und vor allem Ornato I, 1990, und Ornato II, 1990, Tre di quattro, 1994, Nascondere, 1995, und Ricciolo e blu reale, 1997, in denen alle Objekte stets außerhalb und unterhalb der Bildfläche angeordnet sind oder diese nackt und funktionslos preisgeben.

Neue Erwägungen sind dem bisher Gesagten hinzuzufügen, wenn man die Werkzyklen betrachtet, die Ranaldi der Metamorphose der Malerei in Skulptur gewidmet hat. Unter dem Begriff der ‚skulpturalen Malerei’ verarbeitete er im Laufe der 1990er Jahre bemerkenswerte Mengen an Ölfarbe, modelliert in Formen, die den Archetyp seiner frühen Arbeiten oder andere Konkremente wie Nester, Trichter, Gesichter, Maschinen evozieren. 2001 veröffentlicht Ranaldi anlässlich einer Ausstellung sein Promemoria, 1996, in dem er einige Schlüsselbegriffe seiner Arbeit erläutert, darunter auch jenen der ‚skulpturalen Malerei’: „Eine Skulptur kann man bemalt nennen, ein Gemälde kann man nicht skulpiert nennen. Die künstlerische Erfindung steckt in der Umkehrung dieser Norm. Die Ölfarbe (aus der malerischen Tradition) wird wie Ton (aus der plastischen Tradition) verwendet zum Modellieren einer Form. Verwendung von zwei Traditionen, um sie beide zurückzuweisen.“.2

Die Werke erweisen sich als leidenschaftliche Erkundungen des Malerpigments, seiner materiellen Erscheinungsformen, seiner chromatischen Eigenschaften, des Grades seiner Zähigkeit und seiner üppigen äußeren Erscheinung; eine phänomenologische Meditation über das Farbpigment, deren Höhepunkt der selbstfeiernde Ritus des Farbauftrags bildet und die Art, in dem dieser durch den Künstler als bewussten Interpreten erfolgt.

In diesem Zusammenhang gäbe es viele Beispiele anzuführen; nicht ungenannt bleiben darf im Hinblick auf unsere Überlegungen Conoscere impressionista, 1999, ebenso wie andere Arbeiten, in denen Ranaldi beginnt, die Spachtelung der Farbe zu kodifizieren als verbliebene Geste, mit der das gebrauchte Werkzeug von restlicher Farbe befreit wird, indem er diese an den Innenrändern des Keilrahmens oder des Trägermaterials verteilt, in diesem Fall einer doppelten Schachtelkonstruktion.

Auf diesen Rändern des hölzernen Keilrahmens hat Ranaldi ‚verspachtelt’, was an Farbresten in kleineren Mengen übrig war, und damit einen polychromen, scheinbar unbestimmten ‚Rahmen’ geschaffen.

Ein nächster, ich würde sagen, entscheidender Schritt erfolgte mit der Konzeption und Realisierung der ‚Aufziehskulpturen’ (sculture a carica, 2003), einer Reihe von Werken, die Teile aus Bronzeguss enthalten, darunter Kurbeln, die Ranaldi an eigenständigen Formen oder an den Außenseiten der Leinwandrahmen anbringt. Gussteile und Kurbeln, die fest am Keilrahmen angebracht sind, verändern den Schwerpunkt der Werke erheblich und führen zu einer gestalterischen Unbehaglichkeit, die aus dem Werk einen vielschichtigen, völlig inkohärenten Organismus macht, der ebenso als Skulptur wie als Gemälde wahrgenommen werden kann. Diese neuen Werke mit den Titeln NE©dradek (in drei verschiedenen Versionen zwischen 2007 und 2008, als explizite Hommage an den von Kafka für eine seiner Kurzgeschichten erfundenen Namen) und Axis (2008, in zwei verschiedenen Versionen) tragen, nicht anders als die vorhergegangenen Gemälde, auf ihren vertikalen Achsen aus königsblau bemaltem Holz oder Bambusstangen verschiedene Bronzegussteile, die mit Draht am Hintergrund befestigt sind.

IV. Die Kunst begegnet bei Ranaldi dem Modus als Hazard und Schicksal, doch werden beide bald verraten für die Projektion eines zukünftigen Modus. Die Kunst neigt sich wiederholt über den Rand des Sinnabgrunds, der in jedem Ding schlummert: der Schwindel birgt den Trost, hinabzustürzen in den dunklen Ursprung der Form, in den Wunsch, nicht dieses Profil zu sein, das volle Bewusstsein, Nicht-Form zu sein. ‚In’ Ranaldis Werk stößt man andauernd auf die Sehnsucht nach dem ‚Außen’.

IV.1 Obschon sie eine neuartige Bedeutungsdimension in malerischer ebenso wie in räumlicher und in Hinsicht auf ihren Sinngehalt eröffnet, ist Ranaldis Serie Fuoriquadro nicht wie die Pilze über Nacht hochgeschossen, also ohne Vorgeschichte. Wie könnte es auch anders sein. Den bereits genannten Werken, die ein frühes Interesse verraten, das Objekt an die Peripherie, den Keilrahmen oder andere Untergründe zu rücken – da ist etwa Arredo 3, 2005, zu nennen, eine königsblau bemalte Leiter mit der seitlich angebrachten Bronzeplastik einer Kurbel (die in La Spezia und Paris als Teil eines größeren plastischen Ensembles, der Installation Biliho d’ì ciuho e la berva, 2003, zu sehen war), – sind Arbeiten wie Ci troviamo in piazza, 2005-2006, hinzuzufügen, in denen Acrylfarbe und Tempera mit Hunderten von Ablagerungen, die eine leere Bildfläche umgeben, die Spachtelungen von Fuoriquadro vorwegnehmen.

Ranaldis radikale Intuition kann mit den Werken einiger illustrer Kollegen verglichen werden, die gänzlich anders und doch in diesem Zusammenhang zu nennen sind. Außer der bereits genannten Rückseite eines Gemäldes von Cornelius Norbertus Gijsbrechts, die dazu führte, dass dieser zu den Künstlern einer ‚Poetik der Umkehrung’ gezählt wurde, dürfen einige Arbeiten von Giulio Paolini aus den frühen Sechziger Jahren, wie Senza titolo, 1961, (mit recht andersartiger Aussage) und schließlich eine rezente Arbeit von Bertrand Lavier, Bima, 2010, nicht fehlen.

IV.2 Nicht weniger interessant mag jedoch die von Stoichita übernommene, schon von Jacques Derrida angestellte Überlegung zu dem Begriff Parergon in Bezug auf das Genre des Stillebens sein. Stoichita schreibt: „Der Begriff Parergon (para = gegen, ergon = Werk) (…) ist ein historisch begründeter Begriff: er bezeichnete in der antiken Rhetorik das einem Bild hinzugefügte schmückende Beiwerk (addenda) (…)

Para/ergon (praeter/opus) ist also das, was einem Werk hinzugefügt wird, und zugleich, was ihm entgegensteht.“3 Derrida wiederum unterstreicht: „Ein Parergon tritt dem Ergon, der gemachten Arbeit, der Tatsache, dem

Werk entgegen, zur Seite und zu ihm hinzu, aber es fällt nicht beiseite, es berührt und wirkt, von einem bestimmten Außen her, im Innern des Verfahrens mit; weder einfach außen noch einfach innen; wie eine Nebensache, der man verpflichtet ist, sie am Rande, an Bord aufzunehmen.”4 Was in Fuoriquadro explizit wird – dass sich die Malerei grundsätzlich außerhalb des Bildes befindet –, nachdem es in einem großen Teil von Ranaldis Werk bereits durchschien, entpuppt sich nach dieser riskanten Aussage als oft zu beobachtendes Kennzeichen auch seiner regen zeichnerischen Tätigkeit.

Ein Beispiel, das kurz vor der Serie Fuoriquadro entstand, ist Monadi in agguato sulla via delle tebaidi, 2006, eine Tuschezeichnung auf Papier, die Ranaldi hinten in seinen Katalog Quijotesca5 einheften ließ.

Das Blatt erscheint als langgezogener, imaginärer Plan, über dessen Hintergrundraster sich ein gewundener Weg zieht; zu unterscheiden sind Grundrisse von Orten, eben die im Titel erwähnten ‚Thebaiden’, aber auch obskure Flecken – die Monaden –, die von Zickzacklinien umgeben sind, die vom und zum Weg hin ausstrahlen, aber stets außerhalb desselben bleiben. Vielsagend erscheint in dieser Zeichnung die räumliche Anordnung der ‚Monaden’, die auffallende Ähnlichkeit mit der Verteilung der Formen in den Bildern der Serie Fuoriquadro aufweist.

V. Wenn man weiter in der Zeit zurückgeht, so zeigen bereits die Formen der Interni und Esterni, der Luoghi, der Monadi fuori und der Arredi, Zeichnungen, die in Parusie versammelt und veröffentlicht wurden, dass in dieser Kosmogonie der Zeichen Ranaldis Auffassung der Malerei alles andere als an die Form des Bildes gebunden ist, eher einer individuellen Logik entspricht, die im Grunde nur dem einzigen Imperativ verpflichtet ist, den Ranaldi kennt: sich frei heraus zu widersprechen.

SINGBARER REST José Jiménez Renato Ranaldi hat den Weg, der ihn zu seiner Entdeckung Fuoriquadro geführt hat, selbst beschrieben.

Der Besuch in einem Museum, einem Ort der Anhäufung und Zusammenfassung, der gefährlichen, auf den ersten Blick verborgenen Emotionen, kann im nervösen und überkonzentrierten Auge des Künstlers höchstgradige seelische Verwirrung hervorrufen. Ein Stendhal-Syndrom1 also vor einem Ausschnitt unserer Kultur, die so dicht von Bildern, Zitaten und Sinnzusammenhängen bevölkert ist, dass kaum noch Platz für den jungfräulichen Blick des schöpferisch Tätigen bleibt. „Ich habe eine Vision zu symbolischem Leben erweckt und vorgeführt”, schreibt Ranaldi, „ich habe mich von ihr gefangen nehmen lassen, und je mehr ich mich einschließen ließ in die Konkretheit des Werks, umso mehr strebte ich nach seinem Außen, um zu verstehen, was das Werk mir verschwieg.” Es ist interessant, dass der Künstler, der diese symbolische Vision hervorruft, gerade Pieter Bruegel „der Ältere“ ist, ein Maler, der besonders lebhaft Motive und Figuren in den heterogenen Kompositionen seiner Bilder anhäuft, vor allem in jenen, die Szenen aus dem Alltagsleben darstellen. Als ich Ranaldis Erzählung las, erinnerte ich mich sogleich an eine Passage in dem wunderbaren Buch Le Détail2 von Daniel Arasse, in der sich dieser ebenfalls auf Bruegel bezieht. Arasse weist darauf hin, wie im Übrigen auch oft der große niederländische Künstler, Dichter und Theoretiker Karel van Mander in seinem 1604 in Haarlem veröffentlichten SchilderBoeck, dass es „die nebensächlichsten Details sind, die oft die größte Freude bereiten“. Und gleich fügt er hinzu: „Bruegel wird ‚der Drollige’ genannt, nicht nur, weil er in der Art von Hieronymus Bosch ‚phantastische oder groteske Bilder’ malte, sondern auch, weil diese ‚Seltsamkeiten’ in Form von Details in anderen Bildenr wieder auftauchen.“ Als „seltsam“ angesehen wird die Vermischung, die Verwendung von Details außerhalb ihres Zusammenhangs, etwa von komischen Motiven nicht in Alltagsszenen, sondern in Bildern mit religiösen Themen. Aber darüber hinaus interessiert mich das, was Arasse danach schreibt: „Von der Faszination [für das Detail] kann der Betrachter schließlich zum Wunsch gelangen, das Werk auszuschneiden.“3 Die Faszination, sich dessen zu bemächtigen, was uns in einem komplexen und heterogenen Szenarium beschäftigt, direkt zu uns spricht: der Wunsch, es auszuschneiden.

Ranaldis flüchtige, fliehende Vision hat die Beständigkeit einer Obsession. Das Detail, das ihn beschäftigt und quält, ist jedoch eine Absenz, eine Leere: Das Bild, das er gesehen hat, ist nicht dort, wo er es gesehen hat.

Es handelt sich also um die Vision eines Phantoms, eines irrealen Bildes, das überaus präsent ist, doch plötzlich aus dem Blick verschwindet. Ranaldi schreibt: „Dieses Bild hat nie existiert, und doch ist auch sein Phantom ein Werk.” Vielleicht hat das Problem mit den Grenzen, der Begrenztheit der Malerei zu tun, die uns üblicherweise in der Einfassung und dem Schutz eines Rahmens präsentiert wird. In einem kurzen, aber schönen Essay, „Meditation über den Rahmen“ von 1921, schreibt José Ortega y Gasset: „Bilder leben eingehegt von ihrem Rahmen. Die Verbindung von Rahmen und Bild ist nicht zufällig, eines bedarf des anderen. Ein Bild ohne Rahmen sieht aus wie ein nackter, geplünderter Mensch. Sein Inhalt scheint an den vier Seiten der Leinwand auszutreten und sich in der Atmosphäre aufzulösen.”4 Der Rahmen diene also dazu, jener irrealen, imaginären Dimension, die das Kunstwerk darstellt, Eingang „in die Wirklichkeit“ zu verschaffen. Laut Ortega y Gasset: „Das Kunstwerk ist eine imaginäre Insel, die rings von Wirklichkeit umbrandet ist. Damit es entstehen kann, ist es also notwendig, den ästhetischen Körper vom Lebensraum zu isolieren. Vom Land, das wir mit Füßen betreten, zum Land der Malerei können wir nicht schrittweise überwechseln.”5 Ob mit oder ohne Rahmen – ohne ein Element, das es hervorhebt und begrenzt, würde sich das Kunstwerk materiell zerstreuen; wahrscheinlich würde es weiterhin Werk sein, doch in der Art eines Phantoms, wie Ranaldi sagt.

Eine konkrete Erfahrung hat mir einen neuen Blickwinkel auf die Frage eröffnet. Als ich im Pariser Louvre eine Ausstellung zur russischen Kunst und Kultur mit dem Titel Sainte Russie besuchte, war ich fasziniert von einer wunderschönen Ikone: Sankt Georg tötet den Drachen, aus dem zweiten Viertel des 15. Jahrhunderts, heute im Russischen Museum in Sankt Petersburg. Abgesehen von der Schönheit und der Ausgewogenheit der Komposition mit den stilisierten Körpern von Sankt Georg und seinem weißen Pferd, ist es ein sehr konkretes Detail, das meine Aufmerksamkeit gefesselt hat: Am oberen Rand übertritt das Gemälde die Begrenzung des Rahmens, indem es diesen als Malgrund nutzt. Durch die diagonale Dynamik der Komposition ragt ein Teil der Hand des heiligen Georg und seiner Lanze, ebenso wie ein Fragment seines Heiligenscheins, auf den Rahmen hinaus und vermittelt dadurch das Gefühl, das Gemälde könnte über das Bild hinaus gehen.

Erneut musste ich an Ortega y Gasset denken, der die historische Vorherrschaft des Goldrahmens in unserer kulturellen Tradition mit der Menge von Lichtreflexen erklärt, die dieser zurückwirft, und schreibt: „Der Reflex ist nicht Teil des Reflektierenden und nicht Teil des Reflektierten, er ist eher etwas zwischen den Dingen, ein Spektrum ohne Materie.”6 Das bedeutet, dass die Überschreitung der Grenzen des Gemäldes, die Verwendung des Rahmens als Malgrund für das Werk, dieses in einen Phantomzustand, eine Art Niemandsland versetzt. Damit ließe sich besser verstehen, was Ranaldi in seiner Erzählung ausführt, und auch den Prozess, der ihn zur Konzeption von Fuoriquadro geführt hat. Ich habe sofort an eine Art Leerung oder, besser, Plünderung gedacht. Und mit der Reproduktion der Ikone eine einfache Operation durchgeführt, um zu sehen, was von dem Bild übrigbleibt, wenn man nur das Detail des Gemäldes auf dem Rahmen bewahrt: Das Resultat schien mir von wunderbarer Klarheit zu sein: Die Fragmente der Malerei behielten eine große Ausdruckskraft bei, als Zeichen einer Szene, die außerhalb des Sichtbaren vorhanden blieb. Ein Rest, aber vielleicht ein Rest, der Sinn ergibt, genau wie Paul Celan die Dichtung definiert, als Singbarer Rest.

Die Fragmente von Öl – und Acrylfarbe, die Ranaldi an den Rändern seiner Bilder, seiner leeren weißen Leinwände ohne Rahmen, anbringt, sprechen dieselbe Sprache. Sie sind die Negation einer bloß illusionistischen Malerei, das radikale Register einer Vision, in der das Werk sich leert und nur das ursprüngliche Moment Form annimmt, das, was bleibt, als sinnhafter Rest, wenn alles Nebensächliche entfernt wird. Alles kreist um das Detail, aus seinem Zusammenhang emanzipiert auf eine Weise, die nicht sehr viel anders ist als bei Bruegel. Nur dass hier, bei Ranaldi, das Detail die Form des Fragments annimmt, jener Zertrümmerung aller Sinn – und Darstellungswelten, die seit der großen romantischen Revolution als Stimulus für das Beste dient, was die Kunst unserer Zeit sein kann. Eine kritische, nicht versöhnliche Kunst, die die Wirklichkeit und die unterschiedlichen Macht – und Herrschaftsräume in Frage stellt.

Ernst Bloch, der große Philosoph der Utopie, sagt in Das Prinzip Hoffnung: „Ohne solche Potenz zum Fragment hätte die ästhetische Phantasie zwar Anschauung in der Welt genug, mehr als jede andere menschliche Apperzeption, aber sie hätte letzthin kein Korrelat.“7 Denn ohne diese Dimension der Fragmentierung, der Brechung der Bilder, die die Wirklichkeit bereithält, bliebe die Kunst auf eine Funktion bloßer Reproduktion des Existierenden beschränkt, auf reines Ornament. Das Fragment ermöglicht den Blick auf etwas, was vielleicht noch nicht ist, oder nicht ganz ist, aber werden kann. Hier setzt die Funktion und die Fähigkeit der Kunst an, den aktuellen Stand der Dinge zu hinterfragen, unseren Blick und unser Verständnis der Dinge auf die Ebene der Fragen, der Diskussion zu heben, und nicht auf der der passiven Akzeptanz zu verharren. „Nie geschlossen:“ sagt Bloch, „so schlägt es gerade dem allzu Schönen gut an, wenn der Lack springt.“8 Dieselbe ästhetische Position, die uns in Fuoriquadro begegnet, finden wir auch in den Skulpturen Ranaldis wieder, seiner Axis benannten Serie, minimalen, subtilen Arbeiten scheinbar ohne Zusammenhang, buchstäblich aus dem Bild (fuori dal quadro) und rahmenlos. Darin findet sich eine Anspielung auf jenes Ursymbol, das viele Kulturen kennen, die Weltachse oder axis mundi, die als kosmische Achse die Verbindung zwischen Himmel und Erde herstellt. In einer seiner Aphorismensammlungen mit dem Titel Blüthenstaub (1797-1798)9 schreibt Novalis: „Wir sind auf einer Mission: zur Bildung der Erde sind wir berufen.” Diese eindringlichen Werke von Renato Ranaldi, die in der Lage sind, höchstgradige Emotionen wachzurufen und alle um die Achse des Fuoriquadro kreisen, sind explosive Teilchen, Sinnzusammenhänge, erster Schimmer einer zukünftigen Welt. Nur so, einzig über eine Ästhetik des Fragments, kann die Kunst den Weg freimachen für eine bildende, aber nicht versöhnliche Ästhetik. In der unwiederholbaren Einzigartigkeit des Fragments klingt das Universelle an und nach, ohne allumfassend zu sein, und es eröffnet sich die Möglichkeit einer Bildung der Erde durch die Einzigartigkeit einer nicht allumfassenden Nachempfindung. Diese kleinen Zeichen fuoriquadro, außerhalb des Bilds, sind nicht nur der singbare Rest einer nicht sichtbaren Malerei, sondern viel mehr: sie fungieren als Grenze, als moralische und Wissensreserve des Gedächtnisses unserer Kultur.

FUORIQUADRO Renato Ranaldi Vor vielen Jahren überfiel mich nach einem Besuch im Kunsthistorischen Museum in Wien eine ungewohnt detailreiche Erinnerung an ein großes Bild von Bruegel dem Älteren, ein wunderbares Allegoriengemälde im Bruegelsaal des Museums. Sonst eher dem Nachhall des Sinngehalts als der Detailanalyse eines Werkes empfänglich und zuneigend, war ich beeindruckt von der Klarheit der Bilder in diesem erinnerten Universum und beschloss, es sei die Mühe wert, diese beunruhigende Fülle von Daten festzuhalten. Ich schien plötzlich über das phänomenale Gedächtnis einer Jahrmarktsattraktion zu verfügen, etwas Ähnliches wie eine Orakeltrance, und doch fragte ich mich, warum mich von den vierzehn Bildern Bruegels nur eines so beschäftigte.

In der Nacht machte ich mich in meinem Hotelzimmer an die Arbeit und hielt mit schnellen Skizzen und Notizen die Einzelheiten dieser Erinnerung fest.

Ich begann mit den Details am Kleid des verblüfften kleinen Mädchens, eines leichenblassen, traurig-seligen Porzellanpüppchens. Es scheint an einer thymopathischen Krankheit zu leiden, ein neutrales Wesen, unangreifbar durch das Böse und dämonische Angst, Hüterin eines mächtigen und lebendigen Exorzismus. Das Kind blickt von einem baufälligen kleinen Balkon herab, vor einer Hauswand mit vielfach gebrochenem Putz, durch dessen Risse Reihen roter Ziegel scheinen, und hält eine rotgesäumte, von einer blassen Sonne erhellte Fahne hoch. Es zeigt sich einer ungläubig blickenden Menge auf einem Platz, der die städtische Bühne für eine Szene voller Allegorien und Pantomimen bildet. Ein Mann, so rund wie ein Fesselballon und in einen schweren Samtmantel gehüllt, dessen gepuffte und gestreifte Ärmel einen manieristischen cangiantismo zitieren, hält ein Hündchen an der Leine, das mit erhobenem Bein den Helmbusch eines Kreuzritters begießt, der mit weit offenem Mund wie ein Fisch auf dem Trockenen in seligem Schlafe liegt. In seiner viel zu großen Rüstung, verloren in einem Traum, hat er die schwierige Verdauung einer pantagruelischen Fresserei und Sauferei zu bewältigen: Mit ausgestreckten Beinen liegt er auf dem Rücken, das Schwert in der rechten Hand, in der linken einen Kelch mit rubinrotem Wein, der auch auf dem Pflaster verschüttet ist.

Dem rechten Rand des Bildes zu ist ein buckliger Bauer dabei, auf einem Karren Blumenkohl aufzutürmen, um auf diesem vor Menschen wimmelnden Platz Geschäfte zu machen. Alle scheinen gar keine Eile zu haben, sie sind gekommen, um sich umzusehen und um die beruhigende Gewissheit zu genießen, dass die Bräuche und Sitten unter der blassen Sonne dieses Morgens dieselben wie immer sind. Eine Alte in Strumpfhosen mit bunten Streifen, die Füße schwimmen in Holzschuhen, groß wie Boote, tritt durch eine in den Angeln hängenden Tür ins Freie. Die gestikulierende, wie eine Furie zerzauste Megäre wird von einer Schar barfüßiger, schreiender, zerlumpter Straßenkinder verfolgt, die auf einem königsblauen Wägelchen ein zufrieden rosa leuchtendes Schweinchen hinter sich herziehen. Auf der linken Seite des Bildes steht ein Gebäude, auf dessen Dach ein Mann sich anschickt, eine Ziege zu opfern, die er mit festem Griff bei den Hörnern gepackt hält. Sein erhobener Arm, der das Messer hält, liegt auf derselben Senkrechten wie der Sturzflug eines Engels mit Cherubsflügeln, der, in ein scharlachrotes Gewand gehüllt, das sich wie ein Segel bläht, herbeieilt, um das Opfer zu verhindern. Dieser spirituelle Magnet schwenkt wie eine Waffe die Übertreibung eines Kruzifixes, das größte Paradox, das sich die Christen ausgedacht haben, genial entmutigend in seiner terroristischen Funktion. Dass es damit nie Frieden geben konnte, ist kein Wunder. Selbst wenn man sich die Augen zuhielte, um all das Blut nicht zu sehen, das von den Kruzifixen tropft, hingen noch überall tausend Ikonen von Martyrien aller Art, die daran erinnerten, dass Heiligkeit ohne Blutrünstigkeit nicht zu haben ist.

Die Inszenierung dieser Allegorien findet auf einem großen, ovalen Platz statt, der von einem wohlberechneten Licht erhellt wird, das wie ein falscher Vollmond streichelt und, als wäre es ein unbekanntes Phänomen, wesentliche Zeichen mythologischer Missbildungen enthüllt, unergründlich im Dämmerlicht. Zwischen zwei Masten, die an den Brennpunkten der Ellipse aufgerichtet sind, ist ein Seil gespannt, auf dem sich ein Landsknecht, einen Nachttopf auf dem Kopf balancierend, als Seiltänzer versucht. In einem Winkel hinter einer Säule aus Onyx steht halb versteckt ein bärtiger Alter. Er trägt einen langen Mantel und einen seidenen Turban in lebhaften Farben, auf dem eine Pfauenfeder wippt. Mit ausgestrecktem Arm weist er auf die Darbietungen des Landsknechts hin, so als wollte er prüfende Blicke von sich selbst ablenken: er ist verlegen,

dieser Zauberer, er fühlt sich beobachtet. Es ist leicht, die Aufmerksamkeit abzulenken, es reicht ein Fingerzeig, egal wohin. In diesem Chaos weist eines auf das andere hin, in einer Kettenreaktion von Analogien und Verschiedenheit, in einer proxemischen Reaktion ohne Ende. Der unruhige Blick findet keinen Halt in diesem Durcheinander, er irrt herum in der Hoffnung, eine Art Ursprungsprinzip dieser Fülle von Symbolen zu finden: es kommt das Bedürfnis auf, den Platz von allen Verkörperungen zu räumen, die nie aufhören, auf andere zu verweisen. Doch kaum macht sich Leere breit, merkt man, dass es sinnlos ist: Die Spuren dieses Theaters sind unauslöschlich, wie im Herbst, wenn nicht schnell genug gekehrt werden kann, dass nicht gleich wieder alles voller welker Blätter ist. Löschen ist nur scheinbar Reinigung, es ist ein fruchtbarer Akt, der nostalgische Erinnerungen heraufbeschwört, auch unanständige. Jede Form hat ihren Nachfolger, jede Form enthält in sich das Nicht-Sein ihrer eigenen Erscheinung. Sie ist, doch ist sie noch nicht ihr Widerhall: sie ist die Spur des Phantoms, das sein wird. Noch ist sie nicht die phantastische Umsetzung, die sie sein wird, wenn die Zeichen, aus der sie besteht, gelesen werden können.

Im Vordergrund, dem schüchternen Zauberer gerade gegenüber, hat ein durchscheinender Prälat mit der heimlichtuerischen Art eines Mörders, eine Bauernmütze auf dem Kopf und barfüßig, seinen Krummstab neben einer Sichel abgelegt, die irgendein elender Tod dort verloren hat, und streichelt, der Pornokrat, die fette Scham einer Dame, die ein liederliches Lied zu singen scheint, während sie mit dicken Fingern ihr kobaltblaues Kleid lüpft. Sie spreizt zwei kräftige rosa Schenkel und trägt die Pantöffelchen einer Luxuskurtisane an den Füßen. Zeugin der Szene ist Fataturca, eine Zauberfee mit Porzellanteint und Kirschmund.

Sie zeigt Hörner mit der linken Hand, die Hexe, und einen gut gerundeten, schlüpfrigen Körper, mit einer klassischen Ponderation auf die Erde gepflanzt, die ein transparenter Schleier zu bedecken vorgibt.

Sie alle wirken wie närrisch geworden in einem übermütigen Karneval, erschöpft von einem Freudentaumel der Psyche, irgendeiner Pest entkommen zu sein, die dieser ganzen psychiatrischen Gesellschaft den Garaus hätte machen können. Es ist eine Welt, in der die Plumpheit der Kopflosen eine Funktion hat: die Last der Daseinsangst umzukehren, bevor es Zeit ist, die Bühne zu verlassen. In der Stadt hat diese Horde verdrehter Clowns die aufopfernde Pflicht, sich den Tod des menschlichen Geschlechts aufzubürden und zu beweinen, sie überschlagen sich darin, den ewigen Schlaf lächerlich zu machen, indem sie grandguignoleske Hanswurstiaden aufführen, nicht so sehr für sich selbst – die eifrigen Apostel eines heiligen, kryptischen Humors, also Halbgötter – als für den Rest der Menschheit. Ihrer Wirkung gewiss, exorzieren sie mit einem Übermaß an Allegorien aus der heiligen Sphäre der Heiterkeit, entschlossen, um jeden Preis ein befremdetes Lächeln zu ernten, und sei es, indem sie einen unter den Achseln kitzeln. Sie haben die Kühnheit, sich im Hohlspiegel der Freiheit des umkehrenden Traums zu betrachten, in dem sich dein Weinen in die ekstatische Grimasse der unerklärlich faszinierenden Idiotie von Einem verwandelt, der einer kosmischen und heiligen Fröhlichkeit anheimgefallen ist. Links unten auf dem Bild hebt ein zerlumpter Mensch in feierlicher Furcht, mit mühevoller Vorsicht, den Zipfel eines Leintuchs an, das das Wunder eines Gesichts verbirgt, wie eine brutale Wunde zeigt sich mit dem wilden Grinsen des Schwachsinns der Lupus. Zahllose Allegorien, eine der anderen unentbehrlich wie die Glieder einer Kette, verschaffen sich gegenseitig ein Existenzrecht, indem sie das Leben auf die Abwendung von Unheil reduzieren, auf dass Krankheit und Tod, verblüfft von so viel inszenierter Idiotie auf diesem Platz und diesen Straßen, es unanständig finden mögen, dieses Volk von Narren heimzusuchen.

All das findet statt in einem städtischen Ambiente, wo sich Gassen wie zahllose Nervenbündel kreuzen und verknüpfen, wo Saft fließt in einem lebenden Gewirr von Instinkten, zwischen ungezählten Masken paralleler Wirklichkeiten und von erregten Reaktionen auf irgendwelche Aberglauben oder Gebote, die mit blasphemischen Worten und Gesten abgewehrt werden müssen. Hier herrscht Horror vor der unverzeihlichen Sünde, zu Hause im eigenen Bett an einer Krankheit zu sterben. Hier setzt das Prinzip der Notwendigkeit an, das Drama aller Dramen zu leben: dem unbekannten Sinn der Ritualität zu begegnen, ausgeführt von einer erregten Menge Todgeweihter, die seit dem Moment ihrer Erscheinung dazu verdammt sind, alles zu verlieren, was sie haben und was ihnen versprochen wurde. Alles wird möglich auf diesem Narrenschiff*, einem Kessel fiebriger Erregung, der jeden Sinn kreuz und quer befährt. Jenseits der Stadt drückt ein niedriger, schwerer Himmel, Dunst verhüllt wie ein Vorhang die Sonne eines blassen Mittags. Die Luft ist voller Rauch, der nicht aus den Schornsteinen der Häuser, noch den verbrannten Stoppeln der Felder kommt, sondern von weither, aus fast toten Wäldern und verschneiten, rabengefleckten Hügeln.

Die Stadt ist verbotene Zone, doch keiner wacht, jeder kann sie über ihre Zufahrtsstraßen betreten; doch kaum angekommen, wird man in die Zange genommen von der Logik der Wahrsagerei und dem grund-

sätzlich Nichtdarstellbaren, das im Labyrinth der Abstraktionen verzweifelt nach dem Ausgang sucht. Spuren und Indizien der Genialität, verborgen hinter den offensichtlicheren Zeichen der verehrten Schwachsinnigkeit, finden sich überall, alle intelligent unähnlich, doch vereint im selben Betrug und alle auf traurige Weise treu den ewigen Spuren, die immer noch Sinn enthalten und weitergeben. Aus jeder Ecke verteilt sich das wundersame Fluidum des Wahnsinns in der körperlichen Substanz der Anwesenden, die schon deformiert sind von dem Übel, das der Astralkörper absondert, der Schöpfer von Alpträumen. Die Panik ergießt sich in die Heiligkeit des Scharfsinns sui generis, der sich an den Orten des Seins staut, die mit der Lepra oder der Lieblichkeit der Landschaft zusammenfallen. So gut wie überall sind Esswaren und Fässer verteilt: die theophagische Bevölkerung scheint sich tief in das Thema Ernährung und das Mysterium des Stoffwechsels versenkt zu haben.

Das Werk hatte mich gefangengenommen in dieser gemalten Erzählung seiner Zeit, hatte meine Trägheit untergraben, mich entzündet, meine Gleichgültigkeit verbrannt; es hatte mich an die hochheilige Pflicht erinnert, Freude zu empfinden bei seiner Betrachtung.

Am Morgen des folgenden Tages lief ich, da ich keinen Werkkatalog besaß, um die von mir festgehaltenen Einzelheiten des Bildes auf ihre Genauigkeit und eventuelle Auslassungen zu überprüfen, eiligst ins Museum, um einen Katalog zu kaufen. Ich blätterte ihn gründlich durch und musterte alle Gemälde aus dem Bruegelsaal, doch zu meiner großen Überraschung stellte ich fest, dass das Bild, dass sich derart meiner Erinnerung eingeprägt und das ich in allen Einzelheiten analysiert hatte, in diesem Museumsführer nicht angeführt war.

Dabei hatte ich dieses Meisterwerk mit dem unverkennbaren Gepräge des Künstlers so lange betrachtet!

Es handelte sich eindeutig um einen Bruegel, da war ich mir sicher; es war dieses Werk, das mich nachts im Hotel beschäftigt hatte.

Der Katalog, den ich konsultierte, trug ein aktuelles Erscheinungsdatum, mein Besuch im Museum hatte am Tag vorher stattgefunden. Seltsam.

Ich kehrte ins Museum zurück. Im großen Bruegelsaal sah ich das Bild nicht, das ich am Tag zuvor so lange bewundert hatte. Mehrmals und sorgfältig machte ich die Runde aller Räume auf der Suche nach jenem großen Gemälde, das mir an diesem Punkt so wertvoll geworden war wie ein geheimer Vorbehalt, ein Gedanke, der irgendeine Fähigkeit enthüllt, ein As im Ärmel für schwierige Zeiten. Ich fragte einige katatone Wärter, wo das Gemälde geblieben sei, indem ich mich bemühte, es so gut wie möglich zu beschreiben, und ihnen meine Skizzen der letzten Nacht zeigte. Sie schienen verblüfft, doch erfreut: endlich passierte etwas in der Totenstille jener leblosen Säle, im Reich der Aphasie. Doch mein Stottern in einer unverständlichen Sprache, meine wirren Gesten, die nichts erklären konnten, ließen in ihnen den Verdacht aufkommen, sie könnten es mit einem Gestörten zu tun haben, so dass sie bloß vielsagende Blicke tauschten und mit den Schultern zuckten. Ich verlangte mit dem Museumsdirektor zu sprechen, einem freundlich wirkenden Menschen, der zudem meine Sprache sprach. Nachdem er sich geduldig die Beschreibung des Meisterwerks angehört und einen zerstreuten Blick auf die Skizzen geworfen hatte, die ich auf seinem Schreibtisch ausbreitete, riet er mir etwas verlegen, diese allegorische Vielschichtigkeit lieber zu vergessen; er tippte auf Symptome nervöser Art, vielleicht einen Nervenzusammenbruch. Er verabschiedete mich, indem er schüchtern andeutete, ich solle mich am besten im Hotel etwas ausruhen. Aber so einfach kann man mich nicht loswerden. Ich fahre fort, dem Direktor die Einzelheiten des Bilds zu beschreiben; dieser ist perplex und hat nicht den Mut, mir zu widersprechen, er mustert mich, als wolle er sagen, da sieht man, wie es einem gehen kann mit der Kunst, er errötet und rümpft die Nase, als rieche er plötzlichen Gestank. Er ist unsicher, ob er einen Wärter rufen soll, um einen Zeugen für diese Halsstarrigkeit zu haben; er fürchtet, sie könnte in Aggressivität umschlagen. Ich gebe nicht auf: ich will, dass er gesteht, er muss mir sagen, wo dieses grundlegende Werk geblieben ist, wo es versteckt ist und warum es über Nacht abgehängt wurde.

Plötzlich begleitet er mich, freundlich aber bestimmt, zur Tür, öffnet diese und weist mich mit ausgestrecktem Arm hinaus, während er, diesmal weniger schüchtern, seine Bitte wiederholt: Ich solle nicht länger an diese Allegorien eines Bildes, das es nicht gibt, denken und mich im Hotel ausruhen gehen. Nun überkommt mich Verlegenheit; ich wühle in den Taschen meiner Jacke mit der besorgten Miene dessen, der etwas im Moment Unverzichtbares sucht, ich bemühe mich um Haltung, doch ich kann die Situation nur noch verschlimmern.

Von der Schwelle seines Büros aus betrachtet mich der Direktor befremdet, greift nach dem Türgriff und vertritt mir den Weg hinein: Man kann nie wissen, es könnte mir ja einfallen zurückzukehren, um die ganze Leier noch einmal abzuspulen. Ungeniert bündle ich weiter meine Papiere, indem ich sie unordentlich wie

Spielkarten zusammenschiebe, unter den Blicken der Wärter, die, begierig, das Schauspiel zu genießen, inzwischen zusammengelaufen sind und mit großen Augen zusehen und gegen das Lachen ankämpfen.

Endlich würden sie etwas zu erzählen haben, ansonsten ging die Zeit in diesen Hallen, trotz Transistorradio am Ohr und Kreuzworträtsel in der Tasche, doch nie herum. Ich drehe mich um und gehe Richtung Ausgang, um Distanz zu meiner peinlichen Aufführung zu gewinnen. Dabei wühle ich weiterhin in meinen Taschen, um irgendeine Dringlichkeit vorzuschützen. Dann wende ich mich noch einmal um, um zu sagen Sie haben mich missverstanden. Aber die Worte, die über meine Lippen kommen, geben nicht diesen einfachen Satz zu meiner Verteidigung wieder, sondern verstärken den Gedanken, der mich zum Rückzug bewegt hat; ich sage Entschuldigen Sie, ich bin verwirrt. Ein Komplementärfarbton zur Grundfarbe des Vorfalls. Hinter mir bleiben die Museumsleute mit offenem Mund stehen. Ich entferne mich in der Absicht, die diesen Fassungslosen entgegengesetzte Richtung einzuschlagen, aber ich fürchte, trotz meiner Fluchtabsichten umzukehren und ihnen in die Arme zu laufen. Ich beiße die Zähne zusammen und hoffe, dass mein Wunsch zu verschwinden sich nicht gegen mich kehrt wie die Worte, die mir nicht zur Hilfe kommen wollten, und mich wie diese bloßstellt.

Vor dem Museum weiß ich nicht mehr, was ich von mir und diesem Gemälde halten soll, das sich mir so eingeprägt hat. Auf einer Parkbank sitzend versuche ich mir ruhig zu erzählen, dass ich einem Irrtum aufgesessen sein könnte. Ich gehe sehr vorsichtig vor, um den Schock einer plötzlichen Erkenntnis zu mildern.

Nicht ohne Mühe zwinge ich mir schließlich den Begriff der Abwesenheit auf: Dieses Bild hat nie existiert, und doch ist auch sein Phantom ein Werk. Die Weltgeschichte ist mir keine Hilfe, meine Intuition trügt mich, aber sie lässt mich nicht los. Ich glaube an ein achtes Weltwunder, auch wenn darüber widersprüchliche Meinungen herrschen. Die Welt ist voller Wunder, es sind nicht bloß acht, wie es heißt. Das Meisterwerk, über dessen Einzelheiten ich meditiert habe, existiert nun. Ich habe nicht geträumt, es ist die Frucht einer Phantasie, die einer anderen Phantasie entspringt, die Spur eines Werdens, das tief in den kontemplativen Regionen des Modus entstand, wo wir die Rundung der Himmelskugel wahrnehmen, die uns enthält und unsere libertine Neugier begrenzt, sie zu penetrieren, um zu erleben, was außerhalb ist. So könnte einer Phantasie eine andere folgen, so wie dem stummen Abgrund des Wortes ein weiteres Wort entspringt, und dann noch eines, und weiter in Ewigkeit. Ich habe eine Vision zu symbolischem Leben erweckt und vorgeführt, ich habe mich von ihr gefangen nehmen lassen, und je mehr ich mich einschließen ließ in die Konkretheit des Werks, umso mehr strebte ich nach seinem Außen, um zu verstehen, was das Werk mir verschwieg. So irre ich weiter, auf der Suche nach der Sphinx ohne Geheimnis, jenseits derer die dürre Wüste des Mutes liegt, den ich nicht gehabt, und der Träume, die ich mir nicht gegönnt habe in der Kunst.

Ich habe ein Außenbild erdacht, ein Fuoriquadro. Ich bin gewiss: wäre ich imstande gewesen, meine Phantasie zu kristallisieren und einen Bruegel, den es nicht gibt, also ein reales Gemälde, zu erschaffen, so hätte ich mich selbst ermächtigt, einen weiteren zu erträumen, und dann noch einen … alle entstanden aus den Spuren irgendwann betrachteter, ins Gedächtnis eingebrannter Bilder, nun verwandelt in weitere künftig unauslöschliche Erinnerung.

Das Werk ist nur die Ankündigung des Werks. Aber in dem mentalen Labyrinth, in das es mich gelockt hat, streben alle Kriterien, die an das ständige Werden der Formen geknüpft sind, nach einem Fluchtweg, der Rettung, die direkt zum Bruch einer Sinnesebene in der körperlichen Substanz des Werkes führt. Exiliert in unendlicher Ferne von seinem Herzen, verweist mich das Werk von seinem physischen Zentrum an die äußere, ideale Zentralität seines Geheimnisses, an die Erfahrung einer Leere, deren Abwesenheit von Zeichen mich vor Zeichen überquellen lässt. Die Sache ist heikel. Hinter jeder versagten Abschweifung, jedem Verzicht, lauert der mehr als begründete Verdacht, dass jedes Verbot zu träumen mit Gehorsam gleichzusetzen sei: einer leeren, sauberen Schale, in die sich der unreine Strom der Zeichen ergießt, die das Fortdauern der gängigen Meinungen sicherstellen. In dieser Schale reift die Gewissheit der freiwilligen Idiotien, die der Künstler begeht.

In der Kunst ist jedes Etwas auch ein Anderes. Sie ist die Beschreibung einer Spiegelung, die uns die Wirklichkeit verweigert, weil diese keine Spiegelungen projiziert, wir müssen uns diese selbst vorstellen. Es gibt kein Subjekt, das sich nicht von dem verführerischen Risiko versuchen ließe, sich in ein Labyrinth aus Zerrspiegeln vorzuwagen. Auf der Suche nach der eigenen Identität tappt es vorwärts und kehrt auf den eigenen Spuren zurück, bis es kein Bewusstsein mehr für sich selbst, sein eigenes Profil hat, und nur noch

die Deformation seiner selbst wahrnimmt, die die verzerrenden Spiegelwände zurückwerfen. Zuletzt hält es sich für die Witzfigur, der es sich gegenübersieht. Der Übertritt von Sinn keimt in der Neuerschaffung einer Form, die in sich die Zukunft der noch nicht erschaffenen Form enthält. Die Kunst begegnet dem Modus, der sogleich verraten wird für eine zukünftige Projektion. Sie neigt sich über den Rand des Sinnabgrunds, der in jedem Ding schlummert: der Schwindel birgt den Trost, hinabzustürzen in den dunklen Ursprung der Form, in den Wunsch, nicht dieses Profil zu sein, das volle Bewusstsein, Nicht-Form zu sein.

Im Werk begegne ich dem Wunsch nach dem Außen, dem radikal Äußeren, als ob der Preis für die Qualität meiner Schwingung darin bestünde, zum riskantesten Punkt dieses Wunsches vorzudringen, eine intime Zone, wo es nicht mehr weiter geht, wo ich mich weit weg fühle von den demonstrativen Skizzen und von dem Genre, dem ich mich zugehörig glaube. Dort will ich mich aufhalten, einige Meter oberhalb des verzweifelten Lärmens der Esel, wenn ich denke, dass alles fertig ist und alles erst beginnen muss, sei das nun eine endzeitliche Katastrophe oder ein vorsokratisches Nirwana. Selbst ein Tod ohne Grab ist besser als die Erbärmlichkeit eines Lebens ohne die anarchische Würde der Lässigkeit. Zweifel und Verrat sind Fluchten aus der Perversität der Berufung, Verzicht auf jenes natürliche Talent, das einen in die Falle der Identitätsillusion eines eigenen Profils lockt, mit Ewigkeit droht. Zum Glück habe ich eine miserable Selbstwahrnehmung.

Aber vielleicht gibt es keine Möglichkeit der Beobachtung der inneren Welt, so wie sie für die äußere Welt existiert, die uns verwirrt, uns zerstreut mit Formen und Ereignissen: Lichterscheinungen, die auch im Dunkel des Schlafs ihr Schauspiel fortführen und ewig sich ändernde Figuren erschaffen.

Eros, der sich in der Begegnung der Subjekte stets erneuert, erzeugt die Unruhe seines Nichts, aus der die fortgesetzte Schöpfung entsteht. Das ist das Ziel des Alchimisten, der neuen Verkörperung eines blinden Glaubens, der engen Verbindung von Schläue und Torheit, die in ihrer Gier nach Macht und unbelehrbarem Delirium die allgemeine Vernunft umkehrt und dafür sorgt, dass ein scheinbar harmloses Ding in seiner Verwandlungsfähigkeit unvorhersehbar wird wie eine Krankheit unbekannten Ursprungs. Aristotelische stéresis: alles, was ein Ding noch nicht ist, aber seiner Natur nach sein kann. Das Gold der Alchimisten, versteckt in einem visuellen Koan, ein Thema, gekennzeichnet durch unwegsame Zweifel ohne Satori. Das ist das Fuoriquadro.

Ich weiß, dass ich einen Ursprungsplan hatte: an ein Leben ohne jeden Plan zu glauben. Aber ich weiß auch, dass ich meine Existenz zwischen den vier Mauern meines Ateliers in einem labilen Gleichgewicht halte, indem ich diesen Plan mal zurückweise, mal ihm entspreche, und doch immer gegen ihn oder für ihn kämpfe, einen Kampf ohne Regeln und mit nackten Händen, aber voller Leben. Die Tyrannei der Kunst hat viele unruhige Künstler in Gefängnisse mit niedrigen Decken gezwungen, wo sie den Kopf unten halten müssen, um aufrecht stehen zu können, und auf eine Strafumwandlung hoffen, um irgendwann in die Freiheit auf Bewährung des lebenslangen Kopierens der Subjekte/Objekte der Modernität entlassen zu werden.

Nur auf den illegalen Feldern des Gesetzes kann die Frucht des nostalgischen Geistes gedeihen, der sich der längst verströmten Zauberkraft des Werkes wieder bemächtigen will. Amen.

Der Predigtton dieses Bekenntnisses ist typisch für den Künstler im fortgeschrittenen Alter, dem es geht wie dem Boxer im Ruhestand: er hat viel eingesteckt, aber wenn er noch davon erzählen kann, muss irgendein Modus oder sonst jemand in letzter Minute für ihn das Handtuch geworfen haben, um seine Haut zu retten.

RENATO RANALDI - OUT-OF-FRAME Werner Meyer All art revolves around its own meaning. Inspired by the motifs in the picture, we interpret our perceptions and seek a possible and sufficiently clear meaning. And while the abstraction and conception of the artistic process give a deeper meaning to the form and the colour, and therefore to the material nature of the artistic media, then the artistic thought is mirrored in the picture like an exchange and like a reflection, as if everything that makes up the work of art were called into question: the material, the idea and the process of metamorphosis.

In the event the aim of the experiment is to reform and to innovate, the work of art is taken to the edge of academic conventions and the criteria that until then had been the guarantee of good art. And hence for Renato Ranaldi, who starts off from tablet painting, the picture’s action shifts outside the canvas and beyond the frame, i.e. the horizon of a figurative painting. This leads to works of art that investigate their own foundations, that probe the very discourse of art, to tension between an avant-garde that opens up the limits, and to critical attempts at dissolution – since every time a boundary is crossed we can look forward to the magical moment of a new start, the particular, unexpected sense of every single work that should exist.

In the Fuoriquadro (Out-of-Frame) series, Renato Ranaldi has laid the colour and therefore the gesture of the painting, outside the area of the canvas. This new series, the artist’s biggest to date, features a sort of thickening, accumulation – if we consider it from the history of art viewpoint – of clotted colour which has imploded outside the surface, where the pictorial and in effect plastic action of the subject portrayed by the colour is placed on the edge of the usual field of operations of painting on canvas. Once more the atelier becomes the alchemist’s lab where the structure and at the same time the secret and myth of the denial is rewritten. The painting seems to react like Daphne: before the love-struck Apollo, through the eros of his imagination, possesses her as a form on the canvas, the painting, and in short the colour, escapes from this grasp and returns to its original state. Having fled from the surface and the imperatives of the twodimensional imagination towards the periphery, the clots of colour material, forced out of the tube or from the palette onto the edges of the prepared canvas fixed onto the frame, leave the canvas untouched.

Without ignoring the sensuousness and the evident existence of the work of art, the thesis of the nexus uniting the empty canvas and the clots of colour as a reflexive action needs to be taken seriously. The virgin, simply prepared canvas is to be considered a symbol, the surface onto which the painting’s memory, its history is projected. With his way of thinking and his action, the artist supersedes the painting in the Hegelian sense: that is, he protects and at the same time denies and leaves behind the painting, as it crosses the boundary.

Renato Ranaldi translates all this into the gesture of thickening the colour into amorphous clots, making them cling to the surface without spreading them out, without filling the canvas of imaginary space. So he again leads painting into a precarious situation, into an existence on the edge, in which his picture denies all presumed values, rules and classifications of art. His identification with this gesture, his obsessive insistence in the series of these Fuoriquadro works, goes hand in hand with the crisis, with the catharsis that creates distance, the premise to which has to be to rethink the work outside the canvas. In Renato Ranaldi’s works, the frame is a recurrent and always varied theme. It represents the real and material edge of the art’s field of action, it is a metaphoric concept that implies shelter, safety, the integrity of the artistic imagination, and it is here that the crossing of a boundary is highlighted. At the same time, with this gesture, the artist gains a form of distance from everything that for him is painting within the frame. To be an artist is to reflect on all this and at the same time stretch the boundaries of art. To be at the same time inside and outside the work using the tools of art: to be beyond the painting with the tools of painting, this is the irresistible charm of the artist’s identity and passion as conceived by Ranaldi in the avant-garde tradition.

‘I’m a sculptor, but I’m very embarrassed about it’1, is how Bruno Corà quotes the artist, and in the apparent irony we can see his drive towards three dimensions, the hubris of the painter who wants to surpass the set limits and transform painting into sculpture. He is attracted by precarious balances, and indeed on the subject of the Fuoriquadro he says: ‘I use colour as if it were mud. When I paint, I sculpt, and instead when I make a sculpture, that’s when I paint.’2 Already in works like Pittura scolpita (1991) Ranaldi laid such heavy coats of colour that he managed to model it plastically almost as if it were material for a sculpture. But this is how the story of art progresses. Once again, at the centre of discussion is the antagonism between painting and sculpture as the power that generates form.

Some works belonging to the Fuoriquadro series, or to the same context, show how colour can be replaced by objects that have undergone a transformation. With Odradek (2007) already in the title there is a literary reference to perhaps the most well-known and mysterious of Franz Kafka’s parables: The Cares of a Family Man. The handle fixed to the bronze object transmits evident similarities to that so difficult to describe something called Odradek which wanders around the family house in the short story. Odradek is both an object and a creature, an abstract figure that is impossible to classify: inside the building of the family home (grafted into space and time, into order and meaning) it embodies the principle of absurdity, the question left open as to the meaning. Ranaldi includes this paradox in the complex structure of a work of art, he introduces the question as to meaning and its future survival (like in The Cares of a Family Man) plainly into art. The clot of colour or the abstract plastic form is the metaphor that stands for Odradek in the complex building of art in general and in the work of Renato Ranaldi in particular.

When we speak of painting beyond the canvas fixed onto a frame, therefore the space beyond the image, straight away we think of Lucio Fontana: with his Concetto spaziale, Fontana gave painting and sculpture a spatial continuum that developed independently and went beyond the boundaries of the work of art as an object. In his Tagli – first produced in 1958 – the monochrome canvas was torn open, unclosing a plastic depth in the surface of the painting, at first in an intuitive manner, then systematically and with the precision of a razor blade. While Lucio Fontana destroyed the integrity of the canvas as the holder of the image, the last ratio of the monochrome picture, Ranaldi takes the canvas back to its original condition – of a surface prior to painting – by applying colour to the outside edges of the picture, in a plastic and meaningless mass.

And he does so in order to give the painting – with a gesture that at first may appear iconoclastic – a spatiality in a manner that had not been used before, beyond the imaginary spatial construction on the surface of the picture. So, in Ranaldi’s work, the debate around painting is conducted outside its frame.

Let us take one last look at the series. Ranaldi defines his Fuoriquadro 16 (2010) as ‘very impressionistic’ – the colour transports its force of transformation in terms of perception, meant in the fully pictorial sense, beyond the surface of the picture. Each picture in the series has its own physiognomy, its own character, and always offers new variations on the theme. What is staged as a conceptual gesture is at the same time open to the multiform, complex experience of what is like, which is never just a repetition of the same thing.

This is the dynamic secret of the series.

RENATO RANALDI: PAINTING ON THE EDGE BUT REIGNING SUPREME Bruno Corà He who has not felt the enormous power of nothingness and has not been tempted by it knows little of the age we live in.

I. For some time, while painters have been meditating over finally laying down their hats, sculptors have been ready to begin a new siege of space. In these out-of-frame works by Renato Ranaldi both desires compete in the ‘to be/not to be’ of the tragic artist walking the tightrope.

After conceiving and creating ‘sculpted painting’, that is, giving shape to an oxymoron expressing the biggest possible contradiction, but one that could also give a breath of fresh air to ways of creation that had already covered all praxes of representation and even presentation, and around half a century of artistic and poetic shifts, Ranaldi has arrived at the furthermost point in his explorations of non-being. When standing before this new cycle of works put together over the last two years, the immediate sensation one gets is of observing an experience that is at-the-limit, a radical exercise in spatial inversion. Its risk lies in Ranaldi’s explicit intention, with his unmistakeable, innate tendency towards the edge, instability, to push painting towards the outside of the surface at the basis of every meaningful process, outside the safe plane – canvas or other support – where an image could come into being.

At a certain moment, an artist gets to a point of no-going-back in their obsessive elaboration of their visionary and figurative thought – this is what happened to Claude Monet in his ‘Nympheas’ cycle, to Cézanne in his ‘Saint-Victoire’ series, to Morandi in his ‘Still Lifes’ and to others still. At this point everything that had formed the enchantment of creating an image seems to dissolve into a more essential question, a reductio ad extremis clearing out the field of vision over an oceanic horizon with no possibility to glimpse any land. Thought goes first, even before we take our sights off infinity; we are asked to forgo all comfortable support. We are at the point of performing without protection, turning out back on all prudence, repelling the troubadours’ hope, twirling on the trapeze with no net to catch us. The expected final gesture appears with an ultimatum which, however, goes on to explain itself further, despite being definitive: but to define what?

I.1 In their structure, the out-of-frames seem to have a disconcertingly simple appearance; they could make you think of the final acts after a painter’s hard day at work in a corner of his study striving to come up with a piece responding to all of art’s rules and regulations. And as happens at the end of every day, you can image the painter taking his work off the easel. Then, before he takes his work clothes off and washes his hands to leave the studio, he passes next to a canvas. Here, with firm and definitive gestures, he cleans his work tools, leaving behind what colour was left on his paintbrushes, spatulas and sticks. A gesture that is shared by anyone who uses very sticky materials and tools to spread and distribute them – palettes, spoons, spatulas or anything else – like ice-cream makers, confectioners, plasterers and also painters.

I.2 Once complete, the out-of-frame work that offers itself to our gaze appears essentially to consist of a canvas background stretched over a frame and simply made blank, with no images or signs. Therefore, what is left is a void, except for four or five points on the edges where you can see clots of accumulated colour distributed using spatula strokes. So the out-of-frames come about from elementary gestures that remain simple but do not lack a perverse logic giving them meaning from a semantic limbo in which, with trepidation and not without some anxiety, the painter observes and studies the whole history of the art that he is comparing and measuring himself against.

I.3 The out-of-frame depicts the extremist desire to place the painting outside the icon, external to the períechon, Villa would have said, that is, outside what embraces it. What is underlined and highlighted, but is also called into question, is the heart of the medium of representation, in favour of its perimetric entity. The painting no longer seems to want to rely on the plane where for centuries it had been exhibited, but on its outside instead. Kept outside the picture-building, outside the mandalic quadrant, outside in the same way as the monsters ejected and projected beyond the walls in Gothic cathedrals, the painting is still ambiguously bound to the picture remaining on the face of it.

It seems to allude to another central point situated ‘elsewhere’, some fragments of which remain clinging to the sides of the picture, its last, and above all, plastic expressions.

I.4 If ‘the frame separates the image from everything that is not an image’ (Stoichita), in Ranaldi’s out-offrame (where, among other things, there is no actual frame), the painting carefully stroked onto some points of the edge of the canvas occupies – and therefore is – what should be considered the ‘non-image’.

In Ranaldi’s current works, on the unmarked and colourless canvas, the image is the surface left empty and the non-image is the painting in the shape of a plastic element jutting out from the picture into the room. But in the name of painting, can we really be satisfied by these hermeneutical results?

I.5 As an imaginative-spatial concept, the out-of-frame projects from the picture towards the Open Space, and, while in truth it clings on like someone hanging over a great abyss, it is not allowed to fall. It is kept bound to the stable element. Hence, the out-of-frame is not something totally suspended in open space. It certainly suggests yet another stage in Ranaldi’s ‘on the edge’ painting, whose significance is so often rendered by the device which, to imply a condition of risk, needs a point of support, however extreme.

II. Paradoxes are discourses that go against current opinion: ‘indeed they aim to contradict common sense’. The paradox as the condition of being ‘on the edge’ prompts the interlocutor to check the assertion that has been made.

It seemed that the epilogue of metapictorial thought had been achieved by the painting of Cornelius Norbertus Gijsbrechts with his ‘de nihilo’ work Reverse Side of a Painting (c. 1675), housed in the National Museum in Copenhagen. But this is not the case if Ranaldi’s out-of-frame denies that the painting is found either on the front or the back of the surface of the picture and instead highlights that it is outside the surface that provides support for the illusory machine. He invites us to think that the illusionary process takes place in the mind alone, that is, that the painting occupies another place to the picture.

II.1 With his out-of-frame Ranaldi deals with a metalinguistic aspect of (his) painting. Usually already of the inclination to avoid a demonstrative mode of painting, that is, the act of highlighting and underlining the artist’s skills and ‘talent’, he instead adopts the need ‘to represent’. Here he takes the act of painting to its extreme possibilities in his manner of ‘laying’ the colour.

In particular in the out-of-frame the accumulation of colour is highlighted by those very same successive ‘spatula strokes’, which go so far as to produce clots that arm the colour pastes with a plastic value. Ranaldi had already dealt with the vexed antinomy of ‘sculpted’ painting in the past. And in reality in his out-of-frame he continues along that same path. But this time the pictorial deposit obtained by the spatula strokes does not occupy the same central position as in works like Arche-tipo-pittura scolpita, 1991, Sospeso, 1991, Pittura scolpita, 1991 or his Naufragio from 2000, in which the strokes of colour are placed freely side by side to occupy nearly all of the centre of the wooden medium used; on the contrary, in his out-of-frames he concentrates on the edges of the work, the external limits of the canvas support, the sides that form the geometry of the picture.

Therefore, the pictorial material is placed in an emblematically side-line position. In the centre of the work there is nothing but emptiness.

II.2 An attitude found constantly in Ranaldi’s work is his observation of things, objects, architectures and forms of any other type, as well as details that usually escape the common eye.

Often, while dwelling on those details that everyone deems unimportant, uninfluential or even insignificant, he studies their morphology until he obtains that distinctive something that he often uses and that, expediently elaborated, he then inserts in some of his creative modes.

II.3 Karel Van Mander describes the details in Bruegel’s pictures as ‘oddities’. ‘What is odd,’ José Jimenez says, ‘is the mixture, the placing of details out of context, the insertion for example of motifs, cornices (…) in religious pictures.’

Ranaldi’s intuition is quite in line with numerous others that he had already had along his long path ‘straying’, in the critical sense, from the standardised modes, which he has always deemed insufficient to satisfy his desire to upset sense and freedom.

His out-of-frame proposes that we systematically turn our back on the narrative of the image that often normatively constitutes a painting. What he does not do in his out-of-frame is to fulfil the function of representation, which is stalled from the start.

More than attributing a pro-active meaning to the construction of sense, the lumps of colour from the spatula strokes on the edges of the mount point out the nonsense of the narration, told for the umpteenth, and never the last time.

If we ascribe – as seems opportune – the out-of-frame experience to the opposing conception to compliance, which, moreover, is how we could describe a considerable part of Ranaldi’s work, we must nevertheless consider this new (extreme) chapter in his pictorial-plastic creations as his declaration of an additional spatiality to space.

II.4 In Ranaldi, the ‘how’ and ‘where’ are what reveal his greater or lesser desire to keep the representative surface of the picture integral and uncontaminated. In many observable (and observed) cases, Ranaldi places his signature at the bottom of the picture, on the lower edge, in the centre or in one of the two far areas. Also in his drawings, his flowing signature, giving off a arched tension, dominates the bottom of the paper. In his out-of-frame, his need to underline the significance of the process of placing the pictorial value outside the picture leads Ranaldi not to produce any marks on the canvas, not even a signature.

II.5 If in the landscape genre – which is conventionally situated ‘beyond’ the picture – the condition that must inescapably be embodied is the sense of distance, in Ranaldi’s out-of-frame the inescapable element is that the painting itself lies outside the surface traditionally set aside for the representation. And if when painting a landscape it is possible to create an imaginative version of nature thanks to a convention that means we can observe the outside en plein air from an interior, in the out-of-frames the author intends to take it for granted that in a picture the painting is not what we can observe inside the canvas, but instead it is that something that is elsewhere (hence not necessarily in the picture).

In the text Out of Frame, written by Ranaldi in a pseudo-allegorical form to recount the theory behind the works bearing this title (around twenty canvases of various sizes), he states: ‘I have produced and projected the symbolic life of a vision, I let myself be taken in by it and the more I allowed myself to become trapped, enclosed inside the actual work itself, the more I yearned for the outside, and tried to grasp what the work was keeping from me.’ And then: ‘A work of art lies its declaration alone. (…) the work takes me from its physical centrality to the ideal, external centrality of its own secret. It takes me towards an emptiness where, in the absence of signs, signs proliferate. It is a delicate issue.’1 By stating that the painting is not what is found on the surface of the picture, with his out-of-frames Ranaldi sanctions a new plastic-spatial conception that marks out an unprecedented and quite significant position in the history of art. It is expedient to wonder how he arrived at this semiological dimension.

The slow and not always explicit process, definitely involving some guesswork, in response to an authentic, independent need of his own, got underway in the 1970s.

III. The canvas support started to become the ‘stage’ for different acrobatics, eluding its function and aimed at ridding it from its canonical meaning, at the beginning of the 1970s. That is, from when Ranaldi, following the concise archetypal principle according to which a thing is also another thing, unleashed his pictorial logic from the painting=picture equation and ‘built’ his works in total conceptual and morphological freedom.

Forming an angle by placing two canvases side by side, between 1971 and 1974 Ranaldi created a series of works in which the surfaces of the supports take on an essentially marginal value with regard to the sense constructed and taking shape between them, like between the wings on a stage. In Riposo, 1973, a small swing hangs from a thin plank lying across the tops of two canvases; in Passaggio cromatico, 1973, a wood and rope bridge joins two canvases each painted in different colours. In both these cases, unlike other ‘angular’ creations from those years, the supports, though necessary in terms of the topological serv-

ice required of them, are subject to a considerable reduction in semiotics since they do not bear any great traces of iconography or signs, if we are to exclude the colour used to prepare the backgrounds.

Later on, during the 1980s and 90s, with a diligence revealing a fundamental need, Ranaldi works on developing a concept of ‘on the edge’ (bilico), an intuition running through all his works, since putting things in this state of risk captures the attention. Therefore, following this principle, works like Il delicato equilibrio di un artista, 1973 and later La discesa nel Maelström, 1982, Bilico, 1988 and Bilico d’arte, 1995 and others point to a position on the edges, at the limits, on the borders, giving rise to the spatial conception of his out-of-frames. In a certain way, in this period, the accessorial function of the supports is also highlighted in works like Alessandrina 1986, in which the centrality of the significant element lies outside the frame, in the bronze anatomical cast that supports the plastic ensemble.

But, the length of time that Ranaldi has nursed and fed the need to morphologically empty out the surface of his pictorial and plastic works, highlighted in the sensed aesthetic reality of his out-of-frames, since painting is a phenomenon that essentially lies outside the picture, can objectively be verified by a remarkable quantity of works which, each in a different way, explore and forewarn of the possibilities achieved in his out-of-frames.

In my opinion, belonging to this prior stage are works like Come circola il nero, 1992, a large frame in which the oil colour is made into a spiders’ web in the work’s acrobatic emptiness, Cache noir, 1992, and above all Ornato I, 1990 and Ornato II, 1990, Tre di quattro, 1994, Nascondere, 1995 and Ricciolo e blu reale, 1997 in which the objects always remain on the outside and beneath the support or subjugate it by showing it naked and overturning its function.

New considerations go to add to what I have pointed out so far, if we are to take into consideration the cycles of works that Ranaldi moulds around the metamorphosis of painting into sculpture. With the term ‘sculpted painting’ he elaborates considerable quantities of oil colours, modelling them into shapes conjuring up the archetype of the outset of his career or other concrete forms such as nests, funnels, physiognomies and machines, throughout the 1990s. In 2001, on occasion of an exhibition, Ranaldi published his Promemoria, 1996, where we can read some key concepts of his work, amongst which those relating to his ‘sculpted painting’. ‘One might say that a sculpture is painted, but not that a painting is sculpted. Artistic invention lies in upsetting this rule. Oil colours (pictorial tradition) used as if they were clay (plastic tradition) when we mould a shape. Using two traditions to negate both of them.’2 The works turn out to be impassioned acknowledgements of pictorial pigment, its manifestations as a material, colour properties, degree of viscosity and sumptuous appearance; meditation over the phenomenon of colour pigment that culminates in the self-celebratory rite of ‘colouring’ and the ways in which this is done by the artist, the conscious interpreter.

In this sphere, we could mention many examples, but, among them, for the purpose of our reflection, we certainly cannot ignore Conoscere impressionista, 1999 and other works in which Ranaldi begins to ‘encode’ the strokes of the pigment as an end way of freeing the tool used by distributing the colour over the internal edges of the frame or the support, which in this case is a double box structure.

On those edges of the wooden background, Ranaldi has used his spatula on what remains of a moderate amount of colour deposits, to produce a multi-coloured, apparently undetermined ‘frame’.

A successive and I would say important step happened consequently to the creation of his ‘winding sculptures‘, (2003), an experience in which Ranaldi conceived and made a series of works featuring parts of bronze fusions, including some handles that he inserted on autonomous shapes or placed outside the painting frames. Fusions and handles, firmly fixed to the frames, greatly overbalance the barycentre of the works and fundamentally introduce to the work a feeling of being morphologically lost, since it becomes a totally incoherent, complex organism that can be ambiguously perceived as both a sculpture and a painting.

These new works, which bear the titles NEOodradek (in three different versions between 2007 and 2008, with an explicit homage to the nomenclature invented by Kafka in one of his tales) and Axis, 2008 (in two different versions), not unlike pictures, flaunt some bronze fusions on their vertical axes of wood painted royal blue or of bamboo canes tied to the supports with wire.

IV. For Ranaldi Art encounters Mode like a hazard and destiny which is nevertheless immediately set to be betrayed in favour of a projection to come. It repeatedly looks over the edges of the abyss of sense hiding in everything: the vertigo hides the consolation of falling towards the obscure origin of Form, towards the desire not to be that profile, the full awareness of being a non-form. ‘Inside’ Ranaldi’s work we constantly come across the desire for the ‘outside’.

IV.1 Even though they open up an unprecedented enunciative dimension both from a pictorial point of view and in terms of space and sense, the out-of-frames did not just spring up out of nothing. Nor could it be in any other way. In addition to what has already been pointed out as morphological moments that announced his interest in sidelining the object on the frame or on other backgrounds – bear in mind Arredo 3, 2005, a ladder painted royal blue with the bronze sculpture of a handle on its side (housed in La Spezia and Paris as part of the vaster plastic installation Biliho d’ì ciuho e la berva, 2003) – we also have to point out works such as Ci troviamo in piazza, 2005-2006, in which the acrylic colours and temperas foretell of the spatula strokes in the out-of-frames, surrounding an empty image with hundreds of deposits.

Ranaldi’s radical intuitions stand up for comparison with some illustrious works, which, while totally different, need to be recalled in this instance all the same. As well as the De nihilo picture by Gijsbrecht already mentioned, portraying a picture seen from behind, which meant he could be named among the artists interested in the ‘poetics of reversal’, we cannot ignore some works by Paolini from the early 1960s, such as Senza titolo, 1961 (with quite a different meaning) and after that a very recent work by Bertrand Lavier, Bima, 2010.

IV.2 But what may result as no less interesting is the reflection repeated by Stoichita, but already stated

by Jacques Derrida, regarding the concept of parergon in relation to the still life genre. Stoichita writes: ‘The notion of parergon (para against; ergon = work) (…) is a notion based in history: in ancient rhetoric it referred to the embellishments added to a picture (addenda) (…) Para/ergon (praeter/opus) is therefore what is added to the work and at the same time what is contrasted with it.”3 On his part, Derrida underlines that, ‘A parergon goes against, alongside, in addition to the ergon, the completed work, the deed, the piece. But it does not stay on the sidelines, it enters in contact from a certain out-side and cooperates with the in-side of the operation: neither simply from outside nor simply from inside.

It is like an accessory that we are forced to accept on the border, to take on board.’4 What is made explicit in the out-of-frames – painting is a phenomenon that essentially lies outside the picture –, after having looked at a large part of Ranaldi’s works, following this hazardous pronouncement, turns out to be a symptom that also emerges quite often in his intense drawing activity.

In Monadi in agguato sulla via delle tebaidi, 2006, an Indian ink drawing on paper, which Ranaldi places at the end of his publication Quijotesca5, we have an example dating from just before the out-of-frames. In the long visionary map with a winding path traced in the background grid, not only can we make out plans of places, that is, the ‘Thebaids’ mentioned in the title, but also dark stains – the monads – encircled by zigzags that radiate out ‘around’ and towards the path, but always outside it. In this drawing, the location in space of the ‘monads’ is eloquent, in that it shows obvious analogies in the distributive structure of the shapes with each of the out-of-frames.

V. Going back in time, the morphologies of the ‘interiors’, the ‘exteriors’, the ‘places’, the ‘monads outside’ and the ‘furnishings’ drawn and already collected in Parusie highlight and clarify that in that same cosmogony of signs Ranaldi’s conception of painting is anything but bound to the square shape. Instead, it appears as an individual logic, essentially responding to the only imperative observed by Ranaldi: to freely contradict ourselves.

SINGABLE REMAINDER José Jiménez Renato Ranaldi himself has described the path that led him to his discovery: out of frame. In the artist’s tense and highly concentrated eye, visiting a museum, a place of accumulation and summary, of dangerous emotions at first sight concealed, can cause the most intense degree of disquiet in the soul. The Stendhal Syndrome1 before a state of our culture, so densely populated with images, quotes and reverberations of sense that hardly any free space is left for the creator’s virgin gaze.

‘I produced and projected,’ Ranaldi writes, ‘the symbolic life of a vision, I let myself be captured by this and the more I let myself be imprisoned, enclosed inside the concreteness of the work, the more I yearned for the outside, and tried to understand what the work was keeping from me.’ It is interesting that the artist who caused this symbolic vision was none other than Pieter Bruegel ‘the Elder’, one of the painters who most intensely accumulated themes and figures in the varied compositions of his pictures, particularly in those depicting scenes from everyday life. On reading Ranaldi’s story, what immediately sprang to mind was a passage from the excellent book by Daniel Arasse The Detail2 referring precisely to Bruegel. Arasse points out, as moreover the great Dutch artist, poet and theorist Karel Van Mander frequently indicates in his Book on Painting, published in Haarlem in 1604, that ‘at times it is the more secondary details that arouse the most pleasure’. And immediately he adds: ‘Bruegel is known as “Pieter the Droll” not just because he made “fantastical or grotesque pictures” à la Hieronymus Bosch, but also because these “oddities” can be found in the form of details in other pictures.’ What is considered ‘odd’ is the mixing, the placing of details out of context, the introduction, for example, of comic themes not in scenes of everyday life but in pictures of a religious nature. But beyond this, what interests me is what Arasse then states: ‘from his fascination [with the detail], the observer may end up wishing to cut [it] out [from] the work’.3 The fascination with taking possession of what calls out to us from a complex and varied scene and speaks to us directly: the desire to cut it out.

Although fleeting and fugitive, Ranaldi’s vision nevertheless has the persistence of an obsession. The detail that calls out to and obsesses him is, however, an absence, a void: the picture that he had seen is not where he had seen it. Hence, it is the vision of a ghost, an unreal picture that, while intensely present, rapidly disappears from view. Ranaldi writes: ‘that picture never existed, and yet its spectre is a work all the same’.

Perhaps the problem has something to do with the limits, the outline of the painting, usually offered up to us within, protected by a frame. In a short but beautiful essay, ‘Meditations on the Frame’ from 1921, José Ortega y Gasset tells us: ‘Pictures live in frames. This association of picture and frame is not incidental. They each need the other. A picture without a frame is like a man stripped of his clothes, naked. Its contents seem to pour out of the four sides of the canvas and dissipate in the atmosphere.’4 Thus the purpose of the frame is to allow the unreal, imaginary dimension that is the work of art to enter ‘reality’. According to Ortega y Gasset: ‘The work of art is an imaginary island that fluctuates, surrounded on all sides by reality. Therefore, in order to be produced, the aesthetic body needs to remain isolated from the living environment. We cannot ease, little by little, from the earth that we tread to the earth that is painted.’5 Frame or no frame, without something isolating and outlining it, the work of art would dissipate materially, it could probably continue to be a work, but it would be spectral in kind, as Ranaldi tells us.

I was offered a concrete experience to gain a new perspective on the matter. While visiting an exhibition on Russian art and culture entitled Sainte Russie at the Louvre in Paris I felt drawn in by a beautiful icon: Saint George and the Dragon, from the second quarter of the XV century, today housed in the Russian Museum in Saint Petersburg. Apart from the beauty and the balance of the composition, with the stylised bodies of Saint George and his white horse, what captured my attention was a very concrete detail: in the top part, the painting overstepped the limit of the frame, using this as a medium too. The diagonal thrust of the composition results in part of Saint George’s hand and his spear, as well as a fragment of the saint’s halo, being placed in the frame itself, giving the sensation that the painting could move beyond the frame.

Again, I thought of Ortega y Gasset who, on explaining the historical prevalence of golden frames in our cultural tradition since they give off more reflections, writes: ‘The reflection is not of what it reflects nor what is reflected, but instead something among the things, a spectre lacking in matter.’6 This means that crossing over the painting’s limits, using the frame itself as the medium of the work, leads the

latter to assume a spectral condition, placing it in a sort of no-man’s land. This could help us to get a better understanding of what Ranaldi is saying in his account and the process that allowed him to conceive of his out of frame. What came to my mind straight away was a sort of emptying, or rather, stripping. So I carried out a simple operation, and reproduced the icon to try to see what would remain of the image if we only kept the detail of the painting on the frame: The result appeared to me to possess a marvellous clarity: the fragments of painting continued to hold a great strength of expression, signs of a scene that carried on outside the realm of our vision. A remainder, but perhaps a remainder constituting sense, exactly like Paul Celan defines poetry: a singable remainder, singbarer Rest. The fragments of oil or acrylic that Ranaldi places at the edges of his pictures, the empty and unframed white canvas, also speak the same language. The negation of merely illusionistic painting, the radical register of a vision in which the work empties itself in order to give shape to the primordial moment, to what remains as the remainder or residual of sense when all that is incidental is eliminated. Everything gravitates around the detail, freed from the whole in a way not very different from what we see in Bruegel.

Only that here, in Ranaldi, the detail takes on the shape of a fragment, in the atomisation of the universes of sense and representation that, since the great Romantic revolution, has provided a stimulus for the best of the art of our times. A critical, not conciliatory art, which brings reality and the different spaces of power and dominion into question.

Ernst Bloch, the great utopian philosopher, states in his Principle of Hope: ‘without this power of the fragment, of course in the world there would be sufficient intuition for the aesthetic fantasy, more than any other human perception, but, ultimately, it would have lacked correlation’,7 since without this dimension of fragmentation, breaking the images established by reality, art would be limited to a function of merely reproducing what exists, as a simple ornament. The fragment allows something to be glimpsed that may not be yet, or may not be fully, but that may end up being. And fitting into this is art’s function and capacity to interrogate the state of existent things, to locate our gaze and our understanding of things on the terrain of questions, challenging, not just mere passive acceptance. ‘Never concluded,’ Bloch again says, ‘and hence it is quite good for the paint of what is too beautiful to chip.’8 The same aesthetic position that we come across in the out of frames also appears in Ranaldi’s sculpted pieces, in the series entitled Axis, minimal, subtle works, apparently out of context, literally out of and without a frame. In these we find a sign alluding to that primordial symbol present in various human cultures, the axis mundi, conceived of as a cosmic axis, as a point of connection between the sky and the earth. In one of his collections of aphorisms, entitled Pollen (1797-1798), Novalis states: ‘We have a mission: we are called upon to form the orb.’9 This group of intense works by Renato Ranaldi, able to awaken the highest degree of emotion, all gravitating around the out of frame axis, are explosive fragments, channels of sense, little lights upon the world to come. Only in this way, through an aesthetics of the fragment alone, can art open the way to a formative but not conciliatory aesthetics. The universal resounds or reverberates in the unrepeatable singularity of the fragment in a non-totalising way. It becomes possible to form an orb around the singularity of a non-totalising sharing. These small signs, out of the frame, are not just the singable remainder of a non-visible painting, but much more, they act as a limit or a moral and cognitive reserve of the memory of our civilisation.

OUT OF FRAME Renato Ranaldi After visiting the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, an unusual, detailed memory got to work on me of the large picture by Bruegel the Elder, an admirable allegorical compendium that sat enthroned on the wall of the room devoted to the artist. Impressed by the clarity of the images of the universe commemorated in the picture, and knowing that I was more inclined and sensitive towards the meaning given off rather than analysing the details of a work, I thought it would be worth recording the whole of that disconcerting mass of information. Like a freak, my talent for memorising was proving prodigious, something like an oracular disease, but I was wondering why on earth I was dwelling on just one of Bruegel’s fourteen paintings.

That evening in the hotel I set to work and, with quick sketches and notes, I summed up the minutiae of that memory.

I started with the details of the dress of a stunned little girl, a sadly blissful, corpse-like porcelain doll. She seems to be suffering from a thymus syndrome. She is a neutral being that cannot be affected by evil or diabolical fear, the guardian of a powerful and living exorcism. Looking out from a rickety balcony jutting from a wall, its plaster totally cracked, showing the neatly lined-up red bricks underneath, she is holding up a red-rimmed vessel lit by the light of a pale sun. She appears before an incredulous-looking crowd, gathered in the square, the common stage for allegories and pantomimes with the same urban backdrop. A gentleman as round as a balloon, clothed in a kind of velvet topcoat with sleeves overflowing with puffs and pleats of a Mannerist-like iridescence, is holding a little dog on a lead. The animal, its leg cocked, is watering the helmet of a knight splayed out on the ground, deep in sleep, his mouth open like a fish gaping for water. In his oversized armour, inside the dream encapsulating him, he is attempting, with difficulty, to metabolise a meal and the accompanying river of drink: he is lying on his back, legs wide open, his sword grasped in his right hand and in his left a goblet of ruby red wine that has spilled onto the pavement. Further over, towards the right edge of the painting, a hunchbacked peasant is piling cauliflowers up on his cart and selling his wares in the square swarming with people. No one seems to be in a hurry, they are all there, having a good look and living out the reassuring confirmation that life goes on as ever under that pale morning sun. An old woman wearing brightly coloured striped tights with her feet drowning in wooden clogs as big as barges, is coming out of a door barely on its hinges. The old hag, waving her arms, as dishevelled as a fury, is followed by a crowd of barefoot, shouting ragamuffins in rags: they are pulling a pink pig behind them seated, satisfied, like a king on a royal blue handcart. The left-hand area of the painting hosts the image of a small building where on the roof a man is about to sacrifice a goat, his thickset hands holding it firmly by the horns. His uplifted arm, brandishing a knife, is drawn along the same perpendicular line as the swooping fall of an angel with cherubic wings that, bundled up in a crimson dress puffed up like a sail in the wind, is plummeting down to interrupt the sacrifice. It is a spiritual magnet, brandishing crucifixion hyperbole like a weapon, the best paradox thought up by Christianity, ingeniously discouraging in its terror-inducing function. What is sure is that these people have never been at peace. Even if you covered up your eyes not to see the blood streaming off the crucifixes, everywhere there would be thousands of icons, martyrs of all types, reminding you that saintliness equals bloodiness.

The allegories are staged in a large oval square, lit up by a well-studied light which, like a fake full moon, caresses and slips away to reveal, almost as if it were something unfamiliar, ample traces of mythological deformities, undecipherable in the half-light. A rope stretched between two poles, planted in the two very focus points of the eclipse, permits a lansquenet with a chamber pot balancing precariously on his head to perform like a tightrope walker. A bearded old man is half hidden in a corner behind an onyx pillar. He is wearing a long topcoat, and on his head a brightly coloured silk turban with a peacock feather on top.

With his arm outstretched, he is pointing at what the lansquenet is doing, as if he wanted to divert curious gazes from himself to something else: the magician is embarrassed, he feels under scrutiny. It is easy to divert their attention: he could point at anyone. In all this chaos, one thing follows on close after the other in an endless chain of analogies and deformities. The restless eye cannot find a place to lay in all that commotion, it wanders in the hope of finding a sort of beginning that has generated the great mass of symbols: the temptation would be to empty the square of all the personifications that do not cease to indicate others.

But, having created a desert, you realise it was all pointless: the traces of these theatrics are indelible, like

in autumn: as soon as you have swept up a place, it is already covered in dead leaves again. To erase is to cleanse in appearance only, it is a fruitful action that gives rise to nostalgic memories, including the indecent ones. Every shape has its own wake, every shape is also not what it appears. This is, but is not yet what will be given off: it is the trace of the ghost to come. It is not yet the fantastical realisation of what will be, but it will be when the signs forming it are interpreted.

In the foreground, right in front of the shy magician, is a pale prelate with a vaguely furtive and homicidal air about him, his head covered with a peasant’s cap and nothing on his feet. Having laid down his staff alongside the sickle that some old devil has left right there, the pornocrat caresses the fleshy pubes of a dame who seems to be singing some dirty song as she lifts her cobalt dress up with her chubby fingers. She is showing off two chunky splayed thighs, her feet in luxurious courtesan’s slippers. Witnessing the scene is Fataturca1, a sorceress with pearly skin and perfectly painted pursed vermillion lips. The enchantress is making the cuckold sign with her left hand, her somewhat rounded, shameless body planted firmly on the ground in a firm contrapposto stance that a transparent veil feigns to cover.

They all look as if they have gone mad in some festive carnival, exhausted by Psyche’s shivers after having tamed some pandemic that would have been disastrous for that whole psychiatric universe. A world where the madmen’s ungainliness has a function, which is to pour off the weight of the anguish of being there, while waiting to disappear from the world stage. In the town that bunch of tainted fools has the task of sacrificing themselves by taking on the anxiety for the death of human kind. They devise tricks to deceive eternal sleep by staging gruesome antics, not so much for themselves – who are apostles spreading the sacred cryptic humour, and therefore half-gods – but for the whole of humanity. Knowing they will cause great surprise, with allegory after allegory they perform exorcisms within the sacred sphere of hilarity, resolute that they will get a bewildered smile out of you at all costs, even by tickling you under the arms. They dare to be reflected in the concave mirror of the freedom of distorting dreams, where you act out your tears and instead see the ecstatic expression of the inexplicably fascinating idiocy of those prey to the cosmic and sacral gaiety. In the bottom left of the canvas a tramp, full of ceremonious fear, with laborious caution delicately lifts the edge of a sheet concealing the miracle of a face. But, like a brutal gash, it appears affected by a lupus disease, with a sneer of roaring insanity. Numerous allegories, each indispensable to the other like links in the same chain, authorise each other to exist by binding life to its ability to ward off evil.

And so, stunned by the enactment of so much idiocy in the square and alleyways, illness and death find it improper to visit that people of madmen.

It all takes place in a town setting where alleyways knot together and cross over each other like bands of nerves. Energy circulates in a living tangle of poses, among endless masks covering overlapping circumstances and frantic answers to some superstition or commandment opposed by mottos and blasphemous gestures. In one place we have the horror of the unforgivable sin of dying of an illness at home, in one’s bed. In another the need to experience the highest drama of them all: encountering the unknown meaning of rituals, acted out by an excited plethora of dying men condemned from the moment they appeared to lose everything they have and have been promised. In this Narrenschiff1, cradle of febrile excitement, which sails through the length and breadth of sense, everything becomes possible. Beyond the town, the sky is low and heavy, a mist veils a pale midday sun. The air is full of smoke that does not come from the chimney pots, or from the stubble burnt in the fields, but from far off, from the moribund forests and the snowy hills dotted with crows.

The town is off limits, but no-one takes watch, anyone can enter from the roads leading in, but, once they are in, they are seized by the logic of soothsaying and the unportrayable substance that, in the labyrinth of abstractions, is desperately seeking the way out. The traces and cues of genius, hidden by the more explicit signs of the worshipped idiocies, are everywhere, all intelligently dissimilar in the same deceit and all sadly loyal to the same old signs not yet rid of transmission or sense. From around every corner the vast flow of madness spreads into the great mass of presences already deformed by the evil given off by the astral body, the creator of nightmares. The anguish pours into the sanctity of the general facetiousness that stagnates in the places of existence in line with the leprosy or amenity found there. Provisions and barrels are scattered all over the place: the theophagic population seems to be profoundly immersed in the idea of nutrition and its metabolic mystery.

The painting had taken me to its own time, it had dug deep down and set to work on my inertia. It had set me alight, to burn my indifference and remind me of my sacrosanct duty to take pleasure in contemplating it.

The morning after, since I did not have an annotated catalogue to check whether the details of the picture I had written down were right or if I had left something out, I ran to the museum and bought one. I leafed through it carefully and looked through all the paintings that were housed in the Bruegel room. To my great surprise, I realised that the painting I had so impressed on my mind and analysed down to the smallest details was not included in the museum guide. And yet I had observed that masterpiece branded by the unmistakeable stigma of the artist’s hand at length! I was sure that it was a Bruegel; that was the work that had kept me busy for so long the night before in the hotel.

The catalogue I was consulting had been printed very recently and I had visited the museum just the day before. Odd. I went back to the museum. In the room devoted to Bruegel I did not see the picture that I had admired at length the day before. I painstakingly went through the whole museum several times looking for the large painting which at this point had become as precious as a mental reserve for me, a thought revealing some talent, the hidden ace kept up my sleeve for those moments of difficulty. I asked some catatonic attendants where the painting had gone, trying to give my best description of the work and showing them my notes from the night before. They were amazed but happy: they felt that something was about to happen in the morgue-like, airless rooms where aphasia reigned. Their suspicions raised by my burbling in an incomprehensible language and my excited gestures which did not mean anything, they thought they were in the presence of a nutcase. Exchanging meaningful glances, they shrugged their shoulders. I wanted to talk to the museum director, a person with a kind appearance who spoke my language well. After patiently listening to the description of the masterpiece and casting a distracted eye at the drawings that I had unfolded on the desk, with a certain degree of embarrassment, he advised that I forget that complex allegory: he suspected mental problems, perhaps a nervous breakdown. He bade me farewell while shyly suggesting that I went to rest in the hotel. But I cannot be got rid of like that, at the drop of a hat. I carried on describing the details of the fateful painting to the director. Dumbfounded, he did not dare contradict me; he looked at me thinking, well look what art has done to this poor fellow, he blushed and screwed up his nose as if he had suddenly smelt a bad smell. He did not know whether to call a guard, he would have liked someone to witness so much stubbornness; he feared that it would end up with an act of aggression. I kept on insisting, I wanted to make him confess, he had to tell me what had happened to that fundamental work, where it had been moved to and why it had been removed so hurriedly during the night. All of a sudden, kindly but firmly, he accompanied me to the door, opened it and, his arm outstretched, firmly gestured for me to leave, repeating, this time less shyly, his suggestion: that I should not think about those allegories from a non-existent picture and that I should go to the hotel to rest. I started to get embarrassed; rooting in my jacket pockets with the worried appearance of someone looking for something suddenly indispensable, I tried to affect composure, but all I did was make the situation worse. The director, at his door, looked at me in bewilderment. He grabbed the door handle, blocking the way: you never know, I might have gone back in to start ranting again. Casually, I continued to hurriedly tidy up my drawings, stacking them together like a pack of cards under the gaze of the attendants who, in the meantime, eager for something to happen, had swiftly stepped up to enjoy the scene, while, eyes wide, they fought off the desire to laugh. At last they would have something to talk about: with their transistors glued to their ear and crosswords in their pockets, in that place, time never goes by. I span on my heels and went towards the exit to distance myself from my shameful exhibition. Meanwhile I carried on ferreting in my pockets to make it look like I had some sense of urgency. At once I turned round intending to say you’ve misunderstood. But the words that came out from my lips were not the right ones to get across that basic concept in my defence; quite the opposite, they were bolstered by the thought that I was on the withdrawal because I said I’m sorry, I’m a bit confused. Adding a bit more colour to the reason for what had happened. I left them behind me open-mouthed. I headed off, wanting to go in the opposite direction to those aghast people, but, though I wanted to escape, I was afraid of turning around and going towards them. I gritted my teeth and hoped that a desire to sneak off would not work against me, like the words that I did not manage to say in my defence, and would not get the better of me.

Once outside the museum, I no longer knew what to think of myself and that painting so impressed upon my mind. Sitting on a bench, I started to calmly tell myself that I might have made a mistake. I proceeded with great caution to avoid the shock of a sudden revelation. In the end, not without an effort, I made myself

accept the concept of absence: that picture never existed, and yet its spectre is a work of art all the same.

The history of the universe is no help to me, intuition cons me but does not abandon me. I believe the eighth wonder exists, even though there are clashing opinions about this. The world is full of wonders, never mind eight as they say. The masterpiece whose details I meditated over now exists. I did not dream it up, it is the fruit of one store of images prompted by another, it is the trace of a future that took place in the deep contemplative regions of the Mode, where we perceive the roundness of the celestial sphere that contains us and imprisons our libertine curiosity to penetrate it so as to experience what lies beyond. So one cache of images could follow another, in the same way as from the silent abyss of a word comes another word, and another, without end. I have produced and projected the symbolic life of a vision, I let myself be taken in by it and the more I allowed myself to become trapped, enclosed inside the actual work itself, the more I yearned for the outside, and tried to grasp what the work was keeping from me. And so I wandered elsewhere, in search of the Sphinx, beyond which is the arid desert of the courage I did not have and the dreams that I did not let myself dream in the face of Art. I conceived an out of frame. I am sure that if I had been able to crystallise my imagination by making another Bruegel that does not exist, creating a real painting, then I would have let myself dream up another one, and then another‌ all prompted by the outline of images enjoyed earlier, etched into my memory, transformed into another indelible future memory.

A work of art lies its declaration alone. But, stuck on continually changing shapes, the criteria are all trying to find a way out of the labyrinth of the brain I have got myself into. They are looking for a salvation that leads straight to being able to break the sensorial level within the bodily substance of the work itself. Exiled in the spot infinitely distant from its heart, the work takes me from its physical centrality to the ideal, external centrality of its own secret. It takes me towards an emptiness where, in the absence of signs, signs proliferate. It is a delicate issue. Inside every denied digression, every relinquishment, hides the very well-grounded suspicion that every ban on dreaming is like compliance: an empty and clean basin into which the impure flow of signs pour to ensure that current opinions will carry on. A basin brewing the certainty that the artist’s dementia may well be voluntary.

In art one thing is also another. It describes the reflection that reality does not give us because it does not give off reflections, we have to imagine them. There is no person who is not tempted by the seductive risk of going into the labyrinth with walls of deforming mirrors. In search of his own identity, he goes on and turns back the way he came, until he is no longer aware of himself, of his own profile, but only registers the deformation that he saw in the aberration reflected by the mirrored walls. In the end he believes he is the deformation that he sees. Sense begins to come through as a form is newly generated containing the future of the form yet to come. Art encounters Mode, which will rigorously be betrayed for a projection to come.

It looks over the edge of the abyss of sense concealed in everything: the vertigo hides the consolation of falling towards the obscure origin of Form, towards the desire not to be that profile, the full awareness of being a non-form.

Inside the work I encounter the desire for the outside, radical externality, as if the reward for the intensity of my vibration consisted of approaching the riskiest point of that desire, the area of intimacy, where it is impossible to carry on going, where I realise I am distant from the demonstrative outlines of the colouring and the genre we think we are following. That is where I want to stay, a few metres above the desperate hubbub of the ignoramuses where I think it is all over and everything has to start again, whether you are inside an eschatological cataclysm or a pre-Socratic nirvana. A tombless death may even be alright so long as the life sentence without the anarchical dignity of disregard ends. To doubt and betray is to flee from the perversity of the vocation, it is to renounce that natural talent that drags you towards the trap of the mirage of an identity with a definite profile, the threat of eternity. As luck would have it, I have a poor cognition of myself. But perhaps it is not possible to observe the interior world, in the same way observation of the outside world dazes us, distracts us with forms and events: phosphenes that carry on their performance and project the eternal mutation of figures even in the darkness of sleep.

The Eros continually aroused from contact with the subjects disturbs its nothingness, this sentiment giving rise to perpetual creation. It is the alchemist’s wager, the new incarnation of a blind faith, the deep connection of cunning and stupidity which, in the longing for power and endless delirium, distorts common sense and makes it so that, as it transforms, something apparently innocuous becomes unpredictable, like an evil with

an unknown origin. Aristotelian steresis: everything that is not yet a thing but can be due to its nature. It is the alchemist’s gold concealed inside a visual kˉoan, a question branded by impracticable doubt without its satori. It is the out-of-frame.

I know I have the start of a scheme: believing I am in a life without any schemes. But I also know that, at times by rejecting this intention, and at others by going along with it, I have put my existence within the four walls of study on the line. However, I have always fought against or for it, a fight without rules, and bare fisted, but full of life. Tyrannical Art has enclosed many restless artists in prisons whose ceilings are too low, where they had to bend their neck to stand up, hoping for their sentence to be changed, to go back to the probation of a lifetime of copies of the subjects-objects of modernity. Only in the illegal spheres of the law is it possible to cultivate the fruit of the nostalgic mind that would like to retrieve the magical power given off by the work, at this point lost. Amen.

The sermon-like tone of what has been said belongs to an artist getting on in years. He is like a beaten boxer at rest: he has been through the mill, but if he can tell you about it, it means that some Mode or someone has providentially thrown in the towel at the last minute to save his skin.

The Narrenschiff is a moralist-satirical poem written by the German Humanist theologian Sebastian Brant.

It was first published in 1494, and thereafter the work was translated into Latin under the title of Stultifera Navis. The text is a charge against the vice and immorality of that time. The madmen making up the ship’s crew are the personifications of various depravities; the author speaks using their voice and hence lays down heavy condemnation and criticism against the society and politics of that period in history with the casualness of madness itself.
