This year’s guide explores the many dimensions of time in Gallatin—from the seasons of growth for new businesses to cherished moments of tradition, from the legacy of our community’s past to the promising future that lies ahead. Just as the scripture in Ecclesiastes reminds us, “To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven,” so is Gallatin - a place where every purpose finds its time and place.'

Gallatin is thriving, and now is the time to seize opportunities for growth and innovation. For those with entrepreneurial dreams, it’s the perfect time to start a business and invest in a city that values and supports its local economy. Our community’s energy has transformed Gallatin into a hub where ideas and industries flourish, offering fertile ground for anyone ready to plant roots and see their vision come to life.

As we continue to grow, there’s also time to pause and appreciate the beauty around us. Gallatin’s timeless landscape, historic charm, and close-knit community remind us that some things are worth preserving, even as we embrace change. In this year’s guide, you’ll find stories of people and places that capture the essence of Gallatin’s past, present, and future—a testament to how our city honors every chapter of its journey.

Fairvue Mansion, located in Gallatin, Tennessee, is a significant landmark with a rich and layered history. Built in 1832 by Isaac Franklin, a prominent plantation owner and slave trader, the mansion stands on what was once a 2,000-acre plantation. Designed by Franklin himself, the home blends several architectural styles, including Georgian Colonial, Jeffersonian Classical, Adamesque, and Greek Revival. Franklin relied on the labor of enslaved people to construct the mansion under the supervision

of white craftsmen, and the grounds once included numerous outbuildings, such as stables, a blacksmith shop, and nearly twenty slave houses. While the mansion's grandeur reflects the wealth of its era, the lives of the enslaved individuals who built and worked on the estate are a crucial part of its history. Fairvue also became known for its legacy in horse racing, as Franklin and later owners bred some of the finest thoroughbreds in the country, contributing to Tennessee's early reputation as a center for racing excellence. William H. Wemyss (a cofounder of Jarman Shoe Company) bought Fairvue in 1934. Five years later, he married “Miss Ellen” and she began restoring the house and grounds. She was a lifelong preservationist and leader in restoration of historical homes in Tennessee and had Fairvue designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1977.

Today, the mansion stands as a reminder of both the beauty and complexities of Southern history, with ongoing efforts to preserve and share the fuller narrative of the estate, honoring not only its architectural and sporting achievements but also the lives of those who labored in its shadow.

LUXURY POOLS

TIME FOR BRUNCH

We all have times we like to get a little extra shuteye before conquering the day, and that mid-morning moment makes breakfast and lunch collide into a great opportunity for a local brunch. Gallatin has a few hot spots in town where you can grab a combination of savory and sweet breakfast items with a splash of lunch and spirits to boot. We’re pretty sure you’ll make brunch a weekly meal once you’ve tried what our city has to offer.

O’CHARLEY’S RESTAURANT + BAR

O'Charley’s brought back brunch in 2024, and we couldn’t be happier. Everything from honey-drizzled fried chicken biscuits to bacon, egg, and cheese quesadillas means you can have some morning and some afternoon all in one bite. Need something sassy to spice up your

day? Snag a Bloody Mary, MimO’sa, or MargO’rita to pair with your french toast and scrambled eggs, and we know you’ll walk out satisfied. O’Charley’s offers Sunday brunch only, so be sure to mark the calendar for your next visit.

AWEDADDY’S BAR AND GRILL

Sunday brunch just got a glow up at Awedaddy’s Bar and Grill where between 10am-1pm every Sunday you can make your own Bloody Mary, order pre-made delights from the menu, or choose your own fixins for an omelet prepared while you wait. If you like something a little sweeter, check out the Strawberry Stuffed French Toast; need a savory slap to get your day going and you should go dockside with a huge bowl of Shrimp & Grits. Toast those taste buds with a Belgian Sweetie & Hot Chicken, and you’ll have the best of breakfast

and lunch on one plate. Any way you go, we’re sure their brunch menu will have something that floats your boat.

KEKE’S BREAKFAST CAFE

Keke’s rolled into town with brunch as a business model, and boy are we glad they chose Gallatin as a landing spot. Open 7:00am-2:30pm daily (except for Thanksgiving and Christmas), Keke’s has everything from waffles and pancakes, to salads, sandwiches, burgers, bowls, and fancy french toast. We don’t know about you, but sitting down in a cozy atmosphere to indulge in some Banana Caramel Pancakes sounds like a great way to start any day of the week. The exciting part about Keke’s brunch is if you can’t decide what to get, you can create a combo, allowing you an opportunity to sample several of their menu items at once.

Keke's Breakfast Cafe

ALBERTO’S RESTAURANT AND BAKERY

Alberto’s Restaurant and Bakery adds a bit of Brazilian and European panache to our Gallatin food scene. Located in an old farmhouse just off the main drag in town, Alberto’s is a unique spot to stop for dinner, Tuesday-Friday – but hold up! Alberto’s is bringing the weekend flare by offering two days of brunch to satisfy your need for something a little fancier than your typical breakfast or lunch. Stop in for a Quiche Lorraine or Paris or grab a traditional pastry to complement your coffee. If you need something a bit more filling, grab a Ouro Branco chicken curry wrap or a BLT on a French baguette. Whatever your brunch desire, Alberto’s will provide an upscale dining experience you won’t soon forget.

CAFE 393

Cafe 393 claims to be “your hometown marketplace cafe,” and we concur. Offering breakfast, brunch, and lunch options, you won’t come up short looking for yummy morning foods to brighten your day. If you’re feeling coastal, shrimp and grits will set sail to your taste buds; for something a little more traditional, check out eggs benedict, create-your-own-omelette, or biscuits with sausage gravy to get you going. Something sweet to finish off your meal is no problem, as they bake daily fresh cakes, muffins, cookies, and pies. Cinnamon rolls or a root beer float may satisfy your sweet tooth, or maybe you’ll opt for peach soda, fruit tea, or a latte with whipped cream on top. If you’re feeling extra sassy, you can find prosecco on tap, meaning the mimosas can keep on coming! Anyway you fry your eggs, Cafe 393 will help you get your brunch on like a pro. Visit them in Hendersonville or Gallatin starting at 7am six days a week.

DOUBLE DOGS - GALLATIN

This spot is typically the best place to catch a game, sit on the patio with the pups, and imbibe, but now it can be your place to toss back an iced coffee and enjoy french toast, eggs, bacon, and all things breakfast-y. Offering brunch starting at 10:30am on the weekends, Double Dogs has solidified their spot in our restaurant scene by providing

Brunch is one of those meals that feels special, exciting, and just a bit extravagant, but we love every second of it and certainly offer some fun and diverse experiences at these local joints.

everything we could possibly want to munch on, no matter the time of day. With impressive indoor and outdoor seating, this bar, restaurant, and now brunch spot is a great place to meet up with friends for the big game or a weekend recap over mimosas and chicken and waffles.

M.L.ROSE

CRAFT BEER AND BURGERS is new to Gallatin but not to the Nashville area. In the Fall of 2024, they opened their doors to our community, and we added another brunch spot to the weekend roster. Offering a wide variety of entrees, shareables, and cocktails, this burger joint and bar has more than enough food to round out your midday meal. Skillet Monkey Bread and Papi’s Breakfast Burrito are just two of the unique dishes you can snag. If you like a good taco, you can get a Brunchwrap Supreme, or ditch the savory and indulge in some Lemon Blueberry French Toast. Pair your choice with a Casa-Rita, Tropical Tennessee Tea, or a traditional juice or coffee, and you’ll be full as a tick until dinner.

THE

GUILTY GRIND, BLACK ELM COFFEE SHOP, GRAHAM’S COFFEE CO., MARY’S PLACE

If you don’t have time for a full brunch, check out one of our local coffee shops or cafes to grab a local bite. The Guilty Grind, Black Elm Coffee #2 and #3 have Italian pastries, smoothie bowls, muffins, and cookies for onthe-go noms. Graham’s is your local

coffee stop for drive-thru lattes, fun seasonal coffee concoctions, and one of the best Americanos in Sumner County. If you’re looking for a quick sit-down meal that feels like eating right in grandma’s Southern kitchen, head over to Mary’s Place. You’ll find a more traditional breakfast offering, including all the eggs, bacon, grits, and biscuits you can handle.

Brunch is one of those meals that feels special, exciting, and just a bit extravagant, but we love every second of it and certainly offer some fun and diverse experiences at these local joints. From the marina to the farmhouse, brunch is more than just a meal in Gallatin – it’s a whole vibe. §

Induldge TIME TO

Gallatin has no shortage of delicious places to visit –each with its own spin on dessert. We can’t wait to meet you in one of our favorite spots enjoying the many sweet offerings encouraging you to take Time to Indulge .

Everyone needs a little time to indulge and what better way than to find the most unique treats Gallatin has to offer. Snag some noms from one of these local delights , and you’ll leave with a full tummy and a smile.

The Guilty Grind

The Guilty Grind lives right on the corner of Gallatin’s public square, bringing a saucy, Italian flare to our dessert scene. Gelato, macarons, savory and sweet pastries, bread service, homemade cakes, espresso, specialty coffees – there’s not much Laura Braga and her team can’t serve up. The word ‘guilty’ may be in the name, but the satisfied feeling you’ll have after your visit will have you running around Gallatin to share your new find. No guilt here – just delicious food, drinks, and company to satiate your need for a little Italy in Tennessee. The Guilty Grind is host to many networking groups, so grab an espresso and make some new connections while you’re here – it’s sure to be the “chef’s kiss” of your visit to our city.

Serving Italian, Brazilian, and French cuisine, Alberto's cozy restaurant is masterful with unique desserts. Be prepared to make hard decisions!

Mini Donut Daze

If you’re in the mood to indulge but want to keep it modest, check out Mini Donut Daze food truck. Mini donuts, mini corndogs, lemonade, and coffee are freshly made each day, meaning you can pass that all-too-familiar “HOT” sign and head over to the food truck for some pretty special treats. The donuts are for sure the star of the show, prepared in flavors like birthday cake, caramel turtle, and strawberry shortcake. If you want a more traditional flavoring, check out cinnamon sugar, vanilla glazed, or powdered minis. Into something more exotic? Build your own mini creation with a number of glazes and toppings for every sweet tooth. Grab a coffee to wash down your yums, and remember: Mini Donut Daze is where “The HOT sign is always on!”

to make hard decisions, as each dessert typically comes in a variety of flavors, making it increasingly hard to choose exactly what might hit your sweet tooth just right. If you’re wanting a less traditional option, choose the Sweet Pastel – a hot-pocket style offering with your choice of indulgent ingredients. Build your own with fruit jams, chocolate, and powdered sugar stuffed into a fried wheat dough pocket big enough that it hangs completely off both sides of the plate! We love all of the food at Alberto’s, but the desserts are especially good and make for a fun treat for birthdays, anniversaries, or just days that end in ‘Y’!

Bruster’s Real Ice Cream

Ice cream has never tasted so good, and we hope you’re ready for a REAL treat at Bruster’s Real Ice Cream – made fresh daily in each store. Just down the road in Hendersonville, TN, Bruster’s touts everything from homemade waffle cones to non-dairy, fatfree, and unique flavor options. Making “the world a sweeter place, one scoop at a time” is Bruster’s mission, and they’re doing just that with yummy Italian ices, sherbets, and even vegan oat-milk options. From traditional chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry, to Cotton Candy Explosion, Southern Banana Puddin’, and New York Cheesecake, we’re sure you’ll be happy you made the trip. Can’t make it to the store? Be on the lookout for the Bruster’s Real Ice Cream truck at events around town and let them serve up a little happiness to top off your day.

Andy’s Frozen Custard

Make a trip to Andy’s Frozen Custard and you can grab any sweet treat imaginable. Concretes blend your favorite custard flavor with nuts, fruit, and other mix-ins of your choice, and if your sweet tooth is really turned on, you can turn that into a Jackhammer, filling the center of the creation with cookies, syrups, nuts, or hot fudge. Satisfy your thirst with old-fashioned sodas, fresh-brewed tea,

floats, malts, and shakes, or chow down on an Andy’s Turtle Split, Stolen Brownie Sundae, or Zarlengo’s Italian Ice. When that custard craving strikes, never fear, Andy’s is open until at least 11pm every night – one of the only cold desserts in town you can snag for a late-night nom. Save yourself the trouble of making just one flavor choice and take home a Pick 6 or Andy’s Frozen Custard in pints and quarts.

Publix

Publix offers more than groceries and great customer service: they have one of the best bakeries in town, and with an impressive variety of desserts, they can accommodate everything from your personal cravings to company get togethers, birthday parties, and even weddings. Cannolis, petit fours, donuts, pastries, cakes, cookies, chocolate hummus, pies, dipped berries – the choices are abundant and at affordable prices. Publix also has specialty coffee drinks, muffins, tarts, and fresh-baked bread all made in store daily. The best part about having a bakery right in the store is that you can get everything you need to fill the pantry and put a smile on your face for that special occasion, and you don’t have to make extra stops. Snag a premade item or put in an order that allows you to customize your flavors and design to reflect the personality of the event, and remember that we have Publix stores on three sides of Gallatin (soon to be a fourth!), making your bakery visit that much more convenient.

Andy's Frozen Custard

Katherine’s cupcakes are a crowd favorite, not just among us common folks, but well-known names like Reese Withersoon, Miranda Lambert, Craig Morgan and country queen herself Dolly Parton have put in custom orders for their own special events.

Blooming Kupcakes is a local delight that will have you stunned beyond belief when you peep how realistic icing can appear. Born out of the 2020 pandemic, Blooming Kupcakes is Katherine Halbeck’s imagination gone “viral,” as her fascination with online icing decorating techniques inspired her to hone her skills and share her love of cupcakes and flowers with friends. Formerly in the legal and medical realms, Katherine was spending her days in the 8-5 world then coming home to bake and decorate until the wee hours of the morning. When the pandemic struck and work was scarce, she had a talk with her husband and they decided that Blooming Kupcakes deserved full-time attention. It wasn’t until Katherine received a call from a fellow female entrepreneur that she realized God had her exactly on the path where she belonged. She had previously reached out to Mignon Francois, a baker and owner of The Cupcake Collection, for guidance and business tips. After a month of hoping for a response, Katherine received the phone call that would change the trajectory of her business. Mignon shared with Katherine in her morning Bible reading of Matthew 26, she felt called to reach out. Unbeknownst to Mignon, Matthew 19:26 was pivotal for Katherine as she grieved the loss of her son, Matthew, many years before. She’d received mail containing references to Matthew 19:26, a verse that reads, “With God, all things are possible.” You see, Matthew was born on May 26th and passed away on July 19th, and the significance of the mail and eventually Mignon’s phone call sealed the deal for Blooming Kupcakes. Katherine’s cup was overflowing after an hour of scripture reading and encouragement from Mignon, and with confidence and a strength in her

faith, Katherine moved forward with baking and decorating full time.

Katherine’s cupcakes are a crowd favorite, not just among us common folks, but well-known names like Reese Withersoon, Miranda Lambert, Craig Morgan and country queen herself Dolly Parton have put in custom orders for their own special events.

After just a few years, Katherine has found herself baking and decorating cupcakes for weddings, baby showers, corporate events, and other parties; to date, she touts over 60 floral designs and has won decorating contests all over the world – a silver medal in England at the 2023 world’s largest cake competition and a gold medal in 2024 at the nation’s largest cake expo. The rose was a favorite to pipe when Blooming Kupcakes first hit the dessert scene, but after years of experimenting with different designs, Katherine gets extra excited about orders including peonies, now her favorite flower to create. If you love her designs enough, you can even take a chance at your own decorating at one of her many workshops held throughout the year. People come from down the road or across state lines to spend time baking and decorating with Blooming Kupcakes because Katherine seeks to “[make] the world a better place one cupcake at a time.” No gatekeeping here! Katherine loves sharing her love of all things cupcakes with Gallatin and the world!

Gallatin has no shortage of delicious places to visit – each with its own spin on dessert. We can’t wait to meet you in one of our favorite spots enjoying the many sweet offerings encouraging you to take Time to Indulge. §

Tennessee College of Applied Technology boasts several campuses around the state, but a couple in particular serve Gallatin and surrounding areas more intimately than others. TCAT Hartsville and TCAT Nashville (satellite campus in Portland) provide programs in cosmetology, machining, welding, healthcare, and heavy equipment repair among others. If you’re looking for reputable hands-on education to get you credentialed on a fast track to your desired career, TCAT is a great place to consider your options. Sumner County Schools leads Tennessee with the most career and technical education (CTE) pathways and is currently working to add mechatronics and audio/visual production among other programs in the near future.

While our middle and high schools contain the typical clubs, sports teams, and organizations seen across the country and the world, they also give students opportunities to earn qualifications and certifications in professional fields not requiring four-year degrees. CTE improves graduation rates in local high schools and colleges, and the technical knowledge students gain from industry-leading professionals turned classroom instructors means gaining a rigorous academic foundation and real-world experience in their desired areas of study. TIME FLIES

How does time fly?

On wing or rocket it travels by

Hard to believe passing of years

Yesterday celebrating birthing tears.

Once being young running free

Doing this or that which would it be?

Climbing high in a tree feeling alive

Water below taking a dive.

During those seconds no longer earth bound

Screams of joy the only sound.

Many times through life taking a plunge

Absorbing joy like a sponge.

Screams of fear and pleasure at the same time

Living through twists and turns with no rhyme.

Ending differently had you been bolder?

Achieving the goal of getting older

Learning life is simple and true

Best time of living is sitting with you.

Holding hands and kissing your lips

Sharing memories of our worldly trips.

Travelling and looking for more

Now the next life is opening the door.

Fearing what the unknown is bringing

Perhaps soon waking to angels singing.

Will it be like we have been told?

If not just stay with me and be old.

Apple and Dove Flower Co. and Farm is a unique floral shop located right in the heart of the Historic Downtown Gallatin Square. Apple and Dove Farm was established by Mike and Sarah in 2019, and not long after, their brick-andmortar shop hit the scene, inviting all of Middle Tennessee to check out their unique approach to flowers and gifts. Two California natives with a shared dream of growing and sharing their own flowers, these two have exploded into a special boutique floral duo serving the needs of individuals and businesses alike. From weddings to “just because,” Apple and Dove can take care of you, all with a farm fresh and shabby chic vibe.

This husband and wife team has a passion for getting involved with the community, and that’s evident in their array of class offerings both in store and on the farm. From simple bouquet assembly to a pressed flower art series, Mike and Sarah offer beginners and master growers opportunities to learn, love, and appreciate more about the true art of floral care and design. Beginning Summer 2024, Apple Dove partnered with Nashville Cut Flower Collective to offer floral markets every Sunday afternoon during the warmer months. This event is just one of many they host or attend throughout the year, making them quite a presence in Gallatin and beyond. Supporting Apple and Dove is more than just buying flowers – you can browse their branded apparel online or gift a flower subscription to someone needing something bright and aromatic without all the work. If you own a business or just want to spruce up your professional space, for a monthly fee, Apple and Dove will provide weekly bouquets delivered right to your office door. And if you’re really into making sure your arrangements suit exactly what you want, keep an eye out for chances to visit the farm for a picking event or class. Any way you arrange it, Apple and Dove Flower Co. and Farm is a budding company making quite the splash here in Gallatin.

ERICA TWIDLE

Erica Twidle is no stranger to Gallatin. Born and raised in town and reared in a large family, she is accustomed to knowing just about everyone she encounters. Her over 30 cousins, most of whom still reside in and around Gallatin, are a testament to the tightly woven family bonds that make the Herron family city staples.

Most people know Erica as that flower girl…the one who bought Black Tie Floral Design and Events from another local and is now round-theclock assembling bouquets, gifts, and planning large event decor. These same people might not know that Erica wasn’t always our resident florist: she comes from a unique business background with some bumps and curves that led her to where she is today, and man is her story an interesting one.

As a teenager, Erica found a job in Hendersonville as a server at the Black Eyed Pea restaurant smack in the middle of town. Before she was a wife, mom, and business owner, Erica was a Sumner County girl with a love of live music, painting, hanging out with friends, and long weekend trips. Painting and creative

projects dominated her free time, but as we all know, sometimes those creative ventures don’t pay the bills. Erica started her early adult career in technology sales, a far cry from the floral business she owns today. Working for big tech like DELL and various startups selling software to stay afloat, Erica met her fair share of CEOs, sales teams, and board rooms full of people bogged down by the latest and ever changing technologies her team had to offer.

Erica had quite a run in technology, and then she experienced a devastating layoff that had her questioning herself and her worth in the business world. After a heart-toheart with local photographer and beloved Gallatin guy, Richard Suter, her perspective shifted from feeling like life was happening to her to a more positive outlook on the “why” behind her situation. Out of her layoff tragedy, Erica created Reed Rose Co., a company named after her children and designed out of necessity for a supplemental income.

She eventually got back into technology sales, but after experiencing several failed startups and a birthday that ended with her

being laid off, Erica knew something else had to be on the horizon for her professionally. The birthday layoff was a wakeup call, one that sparked some of Erica’s painting and floral passions, although she wasn’t convinced yet her whole life’s work might hinge on them. After throwing her hands up on the technology world, Erica decided pharmaceutical sales might be her niche. Six weeks later, she was laid off again, and it was a random Facebook message that changed everything. Now the owner of Black Tie Floral Design and Events, Erica is a household go-to for occasion arrangements and gifts, but she’s a lot more than that.

Erica is an artist, hired to attend notable events like the Cragfont Gala and the Farm to Table dinner engaging in live paintings of historic sites and surroundings for auction. She’s a sports fanatic (defending fantasy league champion to be exact!), a camper, a concert-goer, DIYer, and Target enthusiast. On a special note, Erica’s spare time is spent with her Girl Scout troop, teaching and empowering girls about camping, survival skills, and entrepreneurship. Along with her troop co-leader, Kim Baker, Erica is a strong woman raising a strong girl to become just like her. Mom to Della and Reed, Erica finds her passion not just in her business, but mostly in being a mom teaching her kids to fight for what they want in life and to see adversity as a means to success.

Downtime means kids running and playing, music blaring, t-shirt, jeans, and her favorite kicks. Ask Erica what she loves most about Gallatin, and she’ll probably tell you how much she loves the support and connection. In the perspective of her friend, Richard, Erica spends her time letting life happen for her, finding the good in everything she can as she moves through each day. Gallatin is home, and no matter the situation, Positivity is Greater than Negativity, and you’re most likely to come out on top.

EVAN JONES

A unique Gallatin native isn’t really hard to find, but Evan Jones is pretty special, especially if you know him outside of his Randy Jones Construction persona. Aside from being an early riser with an affinity for a peaceful Bible study at the local coffee shop, Evan is a numbers guy who believes the Good Lord has blessed him in more ways than one.

Evan was born and raised in Gallatin and is a self-proclaimed “Green Wave to the core.” An only child, baseball player, and calculated personality, it’s no surprise Evan played sports all through school and pursued a Finance and Accounting degree at UT Chattanooga straight out of high school. The issue with all of this is this is not the Evan that people in Gallatin really know. The Evan of Randy Jones Construction, the one helping Gallatin to grow residential offerings off Highway 109, is just a glimpse of the true personality you might know and love if you sat for a coffee in one of those favorite cafes Evan frequents.

When Evan returned to Gallatin from college in Chattanooga, he did everything in his power to prove you don’t have to go into the family business to be successful. After working with the Tennessee Valley Authority, he decided the boiler room wasn’t for him, so he hopped right into the construction business and never looked back. The fun part of that career leap is Evan met the girl that would forever change his world and make August 25th a date to remember. More than just #25 on the baseball uniform, this significant date, unbeknownst to Evan at first, seals his fate as a date, a fiance, and a husband.

Every conversation with Evan begins with him professing his undying devotion to God. He strives to care genuinely about the folks around him and feels his purpose in life is to help people know more about God than they know about him. A man not too keen on the single life in the sense that he loves being around others, Evan is dog dad to a mini goldendoodle named Nala and youth pastor to a gaggle of

young people at the Gallatin Church of God of Prophecy. One week a year, you’ll find Evan at Camp Hickory Hills, another week in Nicaragua spreading the gospel far and wide, and one a night a week hosting a local Bible study in a pavilion of the neighborhood where he lives. And when he’s not doing all of these things, according to Evan, “If I’m not working or churchin', I'd like to be golfin’”! When he’s not working, churching, or golfing, Evan is probably at a Chamber Board meeting, helping plan Habitat for Humanity projects, or sharing his positive experience with Leadership Gallatin and other local organizations working to better our community. He might even be at lunch with Dada Tom and Nana or watching the Georgia Bulldogs tame the football field during game season.

Whatever Evan is up to, it’s most likely not dreaming of building new houses or selling the next lot for a big project. He loves his work, but the most important things to him are at church and at home. Hollie, Evan’s now wife, was a happy accident – one that Evan stumbled across when her family was having a yard sale in the neighborhood where they both resided at the time. The story is too cute to pass up, but we encourage you to ask Evan, as his rendition is surely to give you chills

and a little giggle. Something fun about Evan is he’s always encouraging others to be the best versions of themselves, and that means sharing a few little insights he’s learned along the way. “Embrace the awkward” is a common phrase Evan shares with his church youth but also in general with people he meets. If you can’t handle chicken with your waffles, consider embracing the uncomfortable and sharing Evan’s favorite meal as you listen to his ideas on why you should “Get involved or get left behind.” His grandmother planted seeds of faith and community in his heart early in life, and he’s sowing those seeds all around Gallatin every single day.

Evan’s chance meeting with Hollie, engagement the following year, and marriage on the 25th of August, three years in a row, is no coincidence if you ask him. Forget construction, college degrees, and his professional persona, and Evan will help you see that once you start calculating life, all the numbers align. You’re most likely where you need to be and all in the right time, and you never know when someone walking her dog might connect you with your future.

LARRY MAYNARD

If you’re looking for insurance brokers in Gallatin, TN, you don’t have to go far to find one; however, for over two decades, one agent in particular has occupied a space on the North side of town, and you might be surprised to find out that insurance isn’t his only expertise.

Larry Maynard hasn’t always called Gallatin home, but since 2003, he and his wife Ann have embedded themselves in the community in more ways than one. When Larry isn’t focused on protecting your assets, he’s on a golf course, attending board meetings, or vacationing off 30A in Florida. For over four decades, Larry has enjoyed owning horses, boating, swimming, and even giving some good scritches to his barn cat, George. One of the friendliest people we know, he spends a good bit of time volunteering and advocating for various organizations and causes in our community, including playing in the occasional charity golf tournament to name one.

Larry has served as Gallatin Quarterback Club President and has been a QB Club board member for more than 20 years – a big deal in a city where Friday night lights are a beacon to the locals. Something interesting Larry wants people to know about the Quarterback Club in Gallatin is that the funding acquired through the organization provides money for all sports at the high school, not just football. Speaking of being involved, when Larry moved to Gallatin, local Robert Pate encouraged him to get involved in Sertoma Club, and almost two decades later, Larry has a blast with Christmas for Kids and raising funds to aid speech and hearing impaired individuals. Making time for all things important, especially serving the community, Larry sits on the board for the Gallatin Volunteer Fire Department helping to appropriate funds toward needed equipment and facilities. This is extremely important to

Larry, as he, like many locals, lives just outside the city limits in the areas where volunteer firefighters are the lifeline for county emergencies.

If you walk into the Allstate office just off Hwy 31, you’ll likely find Larry in a white button down and slacks – his go-to easy outfit for business and travel. As he says, “[he] owns everything but the sign on the building,” and he’ll be happy to put his 38 years of insurance knowledge to work, but he’d be even happier to talk about his trip to Shanghai, cruise to Japan, his son, wife, or that one time he was in the airport in Charlotte and saw Lyle Lovett out in the wild.

If you have the pleasure of a conversation with Larry, make sure to ask him how he’s doing. His answer, no matter the day, is always, “UNBELIEVABLE!” And make sure you get some words of wisdom before you leave, as Larry is less worried about selling you insurance and more motivated to leave you feeling better about yourself and your situation than when he found you. Knowing people like Larry Maynard is a treat…kind of like a people insurance policy that you can cash in on when you need it most.

HEIDI SUMMERS

Call Vol State dispatch or peep some balloon decor and a photobooth around town, and you’re likely to have a run in with Heidi Summers of Small Town Pop Co. She’s all over town and even mistaken for her twin sister, Heather, on occasion, but we can assure you Heidi is her own unique personality with more than public safety and balloons on her mind.

Heidi is a local Gallatin girl with a pulse on the smalltown atmosphere, and when she’s not serving through her own business or work, she is giving back to the community at the local high school. Little known to many, Heidi is a softball coach and Gallatin Girls Cotillion Service Project Coordinator for Gallatin High School. As an adult, she reminisced about her time in cotillion and ball and reached out to find opportunities that would allow her to create experiences for girls today like she had years ago. Looking on while she teaches style, grace, and athleticism to Gallatin’s young women, daughter Oakleigh is the epitome of a “mini me” – smart, sassy, athletic, and cute as a button. She goes with mom just about everywhere, all the while learning how to grow up with a servant’s heart and a saucy demeanor.

Heidi had her heart delightfully full as a mom to one, but she and husband Raymond added another to the roster in September, and they couldn’t be happier. There are some big personalities in the Summers household, but Heidi is for sure sassiest. That sass gets her places, not only as a mom, but also as a business owner, coach, and twin sister to an equally spirited sibling. A love for all things celebratory is exactly what inspired Heidi to delve into the balloon business, and over the last five years, she hasn’t looked back except to celebrate how far she’s come on

the journey. With a new baby in the house and a spicy seven year old to boot, Heidi and her husband are hard workers but also know how to take time for themselves.

For all her bluntness and ability to say “NO!,” Heidi has an adventurous side that shows her kids it’s ok to let your hair down and do the things you love. If she’s not assembling balloon arches for big events or teaching etiquette for cotillion, you’ll probably catch her making the drive to Dollywood several times during the season. If she’s not riding roller coasters and keeping a lookout for Dolly, she’s likely slurping a peach sweet tea from Sonic or shopping for her next favorite t-shirt, jeans, and handbag combo.

When Heidi really wants to tap into her “other” self, she ventures outside of Gallatin in big ways. With family in tow, she ditches dry land and hops cruise ships or satiates her need for volunteering with mission trips in places like South Africa or Kenya. She’s passionate about helping to make Gallatin and its people better, but most importantly, she loves bettering herself. Sometimes this is hard – being identified as a twin can steal a little of the special qualities that make her who she is – but she continually finds ways to make her personalized mark in our community, and we’re so happy about it, we could POP!

If you see Heidi around town, be sure to say hello. Don’t invite her onto a full elevator or suggest she swap out the curved shower rod for the straight one (those are big NOPES! for her), but do ask about her favorite theme park rides, share your thoughts on the latest mountain escape, or pass along a nerd rope for her to snack on. You just might make a new friend and learn a little about how to be proper, bold, and 100 percent Gallatin. §

Bobby Dee Howell

Mr. Bobby Dee Howell is not a household name here in Gallatin; however, his legacy is a strong one, especially if you find yourself darkening the halls of Gallatin Department of Electricity. Army veteran and respected GDE lineman, Mr. Howell is a reminder that safety should be at the forefront of everything we do.

From a young age, Bobby Howell had a sense of duty and commitment to his family, his country, and his community. Serving in the United States Air Force from 1952-1954, Mr. Howell was proud to represent Gallatin, Tennessee and to fight alongside others to preserve our freedoms. He returned home, and in 1961 became a Gallatin Department of Electricity Lineman. Mr. Howell maintained electric facilities during his tenure at GDE, and for 20 years, he was a great coworker, mentor, and friend.

On June 25, 1981, Bobby Howell was at the GDE city substation when his normal task of closing a bucket truck door turned deadly. Standing on the ground next to the truck, he failed to notice the boom of the truck being close enough to make contact with the live electrical line. As the truck door shut, the boom and line collided, causing electricity to surge through the boom, ultimately finding ground in Mr. Howell. Sadly, he did not survive the incident, and his story became one that has fueled over four decades of improved safety precautions, procedures, and education for all Gallatin Department of Electricity team members and the linemen community.

Bobby Howell was known for saying, “If you can't do anything about it, then don’t worry about it,” reminding us that worry gets you little more than unnecessary anxiety. His tragic accident in June of 1981 shows us that what is in our control is the safety of ourselves and those around us. Today, GDE can say that Mr. Howell is the first and last lineman who showed up for work and never made it home. In a time where safety didn’t take precedence, he showed up ready to conquer each day without fear it would be his last. Now, safety is the first thing addressed with every team member or visitor who walks through the doors, and continual improvement and ongoing education trump getting the job done on a timeline. In a 2024 GDE tribute to Mr. Howell, his wife and children were grateful to have their husband and father memorialized and applauded for his short but robust life and service.

GDE keeps our city well lit, warm, and buzzing with literal electricity and the current of Gallatin and all it has to offer. Mr. Bobby Dee Howell is an important reminder that life is short, and living with passion, a servant’s heart, and intense purpose is the legacy we should all strive to leave behind. §

TIME TO lead

Gallatin, Tennessee, has established itself as a leader in economic and industrial development because of its strategic location, strong infrastructure, pro-business policies, education partners, and community initiatives focused on workforce development and quality of place. Beyond that, the city has landed community-minded business partners, creative entrepreneurs, and innovative manufacturers. These ingredients combined have put Gallatin on an international map for business attraction.

“We have been consistently robust in securing new business and industry, especially those that bring national and international attention,” said Rosemary Bates, executive director of the Gallatin Economic Development Agency which is a department of city government. “We have what was the largest construction project in the U.S. when it broke ground investing more than $1 billion in our city. We have one of the fastest growing companies in the U.S. which ranked #23 at one point. We have a tech component company

based in Belgium that chose Gallatin as its U.S. manufacturing headquarters. And, we have new businesses that launched here and have grown so quickly they need more space.”

Meta recently opened a hyperscale data center in Gallatin, bringing highpaying technology jobs and donating more than $1 million so far to our local schools and nonprofits. Gap Inc.’s southeast distribution center continues to expand in Gallatin, adding hundreds of jobs. Beretta USA moved its manufacturing facility, along with elements of research and development, to our city. ServPro chose Gallatin many years ago for its corporate headquarters and franchisee training facility. Most recently, the Belgium company 23 opened its first U.S. facility in Gallatin. They make parts for large-scale LED displays used in conferences and concerts, including the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Ed Sheren.

Location is certainly an advantage for Gallatin and its proximity to Nashville along with its geographic

location in the U.S. with access to major highways and interstates, as well as Nashville International Airport and Music City Executive Airport in Gallatin. Location speaks to greater access and lower costs for distribution and logistics industries. Additionally, Governor Bill Lee has tasked the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development to be a leader in logistics.

Gallatin proactively expands infrastructure capacity. The city owns gas, water, and sewer utilities as well as having a partnership with Gallatin Department of Electricity. Most utilities operate under capacity. Beyond that, our utilities plan for the future with imminent construction of additional capacity. Gas, water, sewer, and electric have among the lowest rates in the region.

The city is also a leader in its probusiness environment. It offers resources and incentives tailored to each industry. It successfully pursues grants for roads, due diligence, and site readiness. It makes every effort

to streamline permitting processes. New businesses and developers consistently praise the city for ease of process.

Gallatin is the workforce hub of the northern middle Tennessee community. The economic development agency collaborates closely with educational institutions and organizations to ensure a skilled workforce. Sumner County Schools, which serve Gallatin, lead the state in STEAM schools and in career and technical education and certifications. These partnerships with local schools, colleges, technical schools, and training centers help equip residents with the skills needed by high-demand industries. The Tennessee College of Applied Technology (TCAT) and Volunteer State Community College contribute to the area's strong talent pipeline. Recent collaborations with VSCC led to a new state-of-the-art mechatronics lab. Also, VSCC is #1 in the nation for online tech degrees as well as having certification from the National Security Agency for its cybersecurity program.

While Gallatin is a 25-mile drive to downtown Nashville, it is a stand-alone city approaching its 225th birthday. The city has succeeded in attracting a range of industries, from automotive and manufacturing to healthcare and

technology. This diversity helps Gallatin maintain stability, even during economic downturns, and attracts a wider variety of talent and investment. A testament to Gallatin’s fiscal strength and responsible budgeting is that the city has not raised the property tax rate in 20 years. It has been reduced consistently during that time.

Today’s industries rank quality of place higher than ever before when looking at locations to start a business or relocate one. Gallatin continuously enhances quality of place, which is essential for attracting talent and supporting long-term growth. The city offers recreational spaces, cultural events, and housing options, making it attractive to both businesses and residents looking for a balanced lifestyle outside of a major urban center.

Gallatin’s leadership in economic and industrial development is largely due to this multifaceted approach, ensuring it remains a competitive choice for business investment in the Southeast. Gallatin strives for innovation, a proactive approach to growth, and recruiting companies who will be good, involved community partners. Gallatin Economic Development: True Success. A Boutique Experience

TIME TO Grow

As the clock ticks forward, Gallatin finds itself at an intersection of history and opportunity. With its rich past, vibrant present, and promising future, this growing city is a beacon for business, community, and innovation. The Gallatin Area Chamber of Commerce, established in 1921, has been a steadfast partner in this journey, supporting and shaping the growth of Gallatin for over a century.

A Journey Through Time

The Chamber's roots are as intertwined with Gallatin’s story as the historic bricks of our downtown square. In its early years, the Chamber championed initiatives that brought resources to rural areas and promoted infrastructure development. By the 1950s, it played a key role in attracting industries that would diversify the local economy and provide jobs for a growing population.

Fast forward to today, and the Chamber is still hard at work. Now housed in The Station, a 10,000-square-foot space that combines modern amenities with a welcoming, community-focused atmosphere, the Chamber serves as a hub for innovation and connection. It’s not just a space; it’s a testament to how far we’ve come—and a symbol of where we’re going.

A Thriving Present

Gallatin is booming, and the numbers speak for themselves. With a population of over 50,000 and a growth rate of 3% annually, Gallatin is one of Tennessee’s fastest-growing cities. The median household income has risen by 24% over the past decade, reflecting the economic vitality of the area.

The Chamber has been instrumental in fostering this growth. In 2024 alone, the Chamber hosted more than 120 events, including ribbon cuttings, networking opportunities, and large community events, bringing business and community closer together. Programs like the Youth Job Fairs, HireUp Gallatin, Industry Roundtables, and Good Morning Gallatin demonstrate the Chamber’s commitment to cultivating talent and promoting local businesses.

Beyond business, the Chamber focuses on strengthening civic pride and the quality of place.. Events like the annual Tinsel and Treasures holiday open house, the Gallatin Christmas

AS WE REFLECT ON OVER A CENTURY OF SERVICE, WE CELEBRATE THE MILESTONES THAT BROUGHT US HERE AND THE GOALS THAT DRIVE US FORWARD.

Parade, and the Snowball daddy-daughter dance create cherished community traditions, drawing thousands of attendees and boosting the local economy.

Why Now?

So why is now the perfect time to be in Gallatin? The answer lies in our unique balance of growth and character. While we embrace the opportunities that come with expansion—new businesses, new residents, and new ideas—we remain grounded in what makes Gallatin special: our sense of community.

For business owners, Gallatin offers unparalleled support through the Chamber. Members benefit from advocacy efforts, marketing opportunities, and access to resources that help them thrive in an increasingly competitive landscape. For families, Gallatin provides excellent schools, abundant green spaces, and a vibrant cultural scene. And for everyone, the sense of belonging here is unmatched.

Looking Ahead

As we reflect on over a century of service, we celebrate the milestones that brought us here and the goals that drive us forward. The future is bright, but we’re not just waiting for it—we’re building it. From infrastructure projects to community initiatives, the Gallatin Chamber is committed to making this city a place where everyone can grow, both personally and professionally.

Gallatin is not just a city; it’s a story—one that grows richer with every passing year. And right now? It’s our time.

“GALLATIN IS NOT JUST A CITY; IT’S A STORY—ONE THAT GROWS RICHER WITH EVERY PASSING YEAR. AND RIGHT NOW? IT’S OUR TIME .

This year, three milestones collide—the centennial anniversary of Sumner County's pioneering string band, Dr. Humphrey Bate and His Possum Hunters, the 50th anniversary of the Sumner County Museum, and the 100th anniversary of the Grand Ole Opry. The Possum Hunters were the first band to perform on the Grand Ole Opry. To honor these historic anniversaries, the museum, in partnership with Volunteer State Community College, is embarking on a project that will bring the Possum Hunters’ music back into the spotlight.

This year, a momentous occasion in country and bluegrass history will unfold. Many folks in Sumner County and beyond will celebrate the centennial anniversary of Dr. Humphrey Bate and His Possum Hunters, the pioneering string band that not only helped shape the future of country music but was also the first band to perform on the Grand Ole Opry. The Opry’s 100th anniversary coincides with another milestone— the 50th anniversary of the Sumner County Museum, a local institution that preserves the rich history of Sumner County. To honor these historic anniversaries, the museum, in partnership with Volunteer State Community College, is embarking on a project that will bring the Possum Hunters’ music back into the spotlight.

Dr. Humphrey Bate, a bandleader and accomplished harmonicist, formed Dr. Humphrey Bate’s Augmented String Orchestra, in Castalian Springs, Sumner County, in the early 1920s. Their performances were groundbreaking, as they were the first musicians to play on Nashville radio, beginning in 1925. Their appearances on WSM, the station

that would later become the home of the Grand Ole Opry, were instrumental in introducing the band’s unique sound to a wider audience. The bands’ blend of fiddles, banjos, guitars, and other string instruments set the stage for future country and bluegrass bands, leaving an indelible mark on the music world. When WSM first went on air in October 1925, Dr Bate and his orchestra were there, becoming the first band to perform on the now iconic radio station. Ten days later, Dr. Bate and his orchestra were to begin playing on a regular weekly basis, on a program referred to as the Barn Dance. Radio announcer George “Judge” Hay was there in the studio waiting for a NBC network program to end. There were a lot of people in the place, both performer and audience. Judge Hay heard Dr. Walter Damrosch explain a song played by his New York Symphony Orchestra. Following that program, the barn dance came on, and Judge Hay said, 'You've been up in the clouds with Grand Opera; now get down to earth with us in a four-hour shindig of Grand Old Opry!’ After Judge Hay named the Grand Ole Opry, he also suggested to Dr. Bate that his band be called "Dr. Humphrey Bate and his

Possum Hunters." He also named other bands - "The Gully Jumpers", "The Fruit Jar Drinkers." He suggested to the players that they dress in a way that would complement their new names. One point worth noting here is that all of the early references to the "Opry" use the word "Old" rather than "Ole." This change was effected after 1940, again by Judge Hay.

As a testament to their enduring legacy, Bob Dylan, among others, was a noted fan of the Possum Hunters, and the band’s influence was recognized in Ken Burns' acclaimed documentary Country Music. The band’s distinctive style has continued to inspire artists across generations, and in 1984, they were even commemorated in R. Crumb’s limited edition trading card series, which featured influential pioneers of country music.

Now, in 2025, a new chapter in the Possum Hunters’ story will be written. The Sumner County Museum and Volunteer State Community College will record an album of original Possum Hunters songs and standards. The album will be brought to life by the Luggnutts, a local bluegrass band that includes direct descendants of the original Possum Hunters. This project, aimed at raising funds for historic preservation efforts in Sumner County, will feature thirteen to fourteen songs originally performed by the Possum Hunters on WSM radio and at the Opry during the 1920s and 1930s.

The project has garnered support from various local organizations. Volunteer State Community College’s state-of-the-art recording studio, along with the expertise of its students, will serve as the foundation for the album’s production. The Tennessee Arts Commission has awarded the project a grant of $3,000, acknowledging the

Dr. Humphrey Bate and His Possum Hunters

historical and artistic significance of the Possum Hunters’ contribution to American music. Additionally, Dot Records, the legendary record label that once called Gallatin, Tennessee, home, will host the album. World renowned artist, David Wright, who’s historically accurate artwork is displayed in institutions across the country, including the Smithsonian Museum, will design the album cover including its artwork and a poster.

As we approach the 100th anniversary of Dr. Bate and His Possum Hunters, it’s clear that their influence is as powerful today as it was in the 1920s. Their music laid the groundwork for the country and bluegrass genres, and this album is a fitting tribute to their legacy.

The Luggnutts rendition of the Possum Hunters’ music will ensure that this timeless sound continues to resonate with listeners, further cementing the band’s place in the pantheon of American music history and highlighting the significant role Sumner County played in shaping the sound of country and bluegrass music. The Possum Hunters’ legacy is not just a regional treasure but a cornerstone of American music, and this venture will help preserve and celebrate that vital contribution for generations to come.

The album is scheduled for release in August 2025, following a series of promotional activities, including a presale campaign that will kick off at the museum’s 50th Anniversary celebration – Barn Dance, where the Luggnutts will perform in April. With the support of the community, this promises to preserve their music for future generations while helping to maintain the historical treasures of Sumner County. For updates on this event check the museum website - sumnercountymuseum. org. §

Me

TIME

The most precious form of time that many fail to indulge in is a little ME TIME every now and again. I’ve recently decided that enough’s enough! Me Time is absolutely necessary, and the best part is that my recent experience kept me right here in Gallatin, Tennessee, supporting local businesses in this place I love calling home.

Before embarking on my day, I needed a plan. I have to pat myself on the back for the hours I mapped out all for ME. Coffee and breakfast is a must for this girl, so I put on my comfy clothes and headed to grab a local brew at Black Elm #2 on the square in downtown Gallatin. Walking up to this coffee shop is quite the treat – the city does a great job keeping flowers and other greenery abundant throughout the year, and that makes for pleasant views along the sidewalks.

As I turned the corner into 106 Public Square, I saw a friend or two and stopped for a chat, but I didn’t linger because my stomach was already growling and the need for caffeine took priority. Sashaying, as I do, up to the counter, I immediately ordered an Americano with a splash of half-and-half. I was feeling fancy on this particular day, so a pump of sugar-free caramel followed, and my espresso-fueled day had officially commenced. Coffee without food is a no-no in my world, so I scanned the menu for something to eat. After considering avocado toast, a muffin, and homemade cookies, I decided on the Early Bird, a smoked turkey, avocado, and egg bagel with whole grain mustard. Upon eating my sandwich and drinking enough espresso to light up a room, I plugged in to enjoy

the free wifi to catch up on socials and then headed out to the nail salon across town.

I hear Unique Nails Bar III has a quiet room I can reserve with friends, wine, and low lighting. Now, that’s a treat! The rave reviews in Hip Gallatin along with the chamber recommendation sold me, so I zoomed over to get my relaxation on and check out the space before planning my next girls’ night out with the book club. The amount of services offered in this place is incredible – enough to have all of your me time in one place – but on this day, it was a Volcano Spa Pedicure with collagen, gel polish and a full set with dip for my nails. Picking a color could have been endless, but knowing I’m a glittery girl, I made sure to scope out something pink, sparkly, and fun in advance. The cushy chairs and sleek white walls give this nail spa a clean and inviting atmosphere, and the blinged out chandeliers have a fancy feel that screams luxury and quality. As I snuggled into the pedicure chair and submerged both feet into the basin of bubbling water, I shut my eyes to enjoy a tiny catnap before the manicure. Each nail artist has a unique style, so I got a little wild and let mine choose one nail to give a little flair. Can’t wait for my next mani/pedi! A couple hours of relaxing and being pampered really hit the spot and

Black Elm #2

reminded me that I was running a tad low on some of my favorite beauty products. A quick message to Elizabeth Doyle, my Mary Kay Cosmetics consultant, and I was on my way to restocking the makeup bag.

Mary Kay is #1 in the beauty business, and in my mind, Elizabeth Doyle (Liz to some) is the best woman to call for all beauty and skincare needs. She walked me through the most recent catalog, sharing monthly specials and new products, and then invited me for a little pampering sesh so that I could try a few things before making the final order. Before I arrived, I knew I needed a couple of items that stay in my beauty bag. Supreme Hydrating Lipstick in Mauve Crush is a go-to lip color all year long, and Satin Hands scrub and lotion is in my purse at all times. If the lips and the hands are hydrated, then I feel like a million bucks, and Elizabeth knows how to keep me in business! Being a bit of a perfume freak, I decided a new scent might be in order. Belara was a favorite years ago, and the scent still made me smile, so I ordered a full sized bottle and tacked on the limited edition lotion to round out my purchase. Good conversation and some much needed skincare advice from Elizabeth, and my stomach was starting to talk. Refreshed and ready to continue this

NEXT TIME YOU NEED TO SLOW DOWN AND ENJOY THE THINGS YOU LOVE, I HOPE YOU’LL FOLLOW MY FOOTSTEPS AND TREAT YOURSELF WITH GOOD FOOD, MUCH NEEDED PAMPERING.

personal retreat, I hopped in my Prius and pulled right up to one of my favorite fresh restaurants.

I don’t know about you, but the thought of steaming noodles floating in a bowl of aromatic broth, vegetables, mint, cilantro, crushed peanuts, pickled daikon, and fried shallots, drizzled in scallion oil and chili lime dressing is enough to have me zooming to the far end of town for a yummy Vietnamese meal I can’t find anywhere else in Sumner County. Vui’s Kitchen is a local, fresh Vietnamese restaurant with more food options than you can shake a chopstick at. From the moment I hit the door, I had my mind on a Vui’s Bowl – noodles, double chicken, and a little chili oil for a kick, and I had everything I needed for a filling and healthy lunch. I’m a creature of habit and tend to get the same meal every time I go, but I’ve tried a few other things

Vui's Kitchen

that have me convinced I should branch out and put a little adventure into my next visit. The spicy beef tacos are a fun handheld option for anyone who loves tortillas packed to the gills with fresh ingredients including cabbage and jalapenos, and the traditional pork Bao Buns are a great starter to share before you indulge in a main course of Pho, ribs, or Bahn Mi. On a bit of a veggie kick for this “me day’ I ordered some summer rolls for that extra crunch and bit of shrimp, and I also made sure to tack on a to-go order of coconut pudding, a delicious and unique dessert including tapioca, black sesame, and crushed peanuts. I grabbed my favorite all-natural soda from the self-serve machine, and on the way to my seat said my hellos to a couple local friends before finding a cozy two-top by the window where I could enjoy the sunshine while waiting on my meal. After slurping my way to the bottom of the bowl, I got to thinking it would be fun to head back toward home for a couple treats before calling it a successful day.

The Gallatin Public Library has been in its current building for a number of years, but every time I walk in, I’m amazed at how beautiful and new it looks. Before heading into the main room, I perused the shelves for a little Mo Willems and the perky pigeon he writes about for littles. My nieces and nephews love those books, so I’m always on the lookout for fun children’s reads to send along to my brother and sister who avidly use the Libby app to download books from the local library. After a good laugh and listening to story time, I walked across the hall and straight to the G section to find a book I’ve been dying…pun intended…to read. Kip Gayden’s Miscarriage of Justice: A Novel is a murder mystery set right here in Gallatin, Tennessee in the early 1900s. Anna Dotson, a modern woman married to a local doctor and wildly unhappy with her life and society’s antiquated expectations for women, is the main female character in the novel, largely inspired by true events. The only copy available was tucked tightly onto the shelf,

The Gallatin Public Library

and I grabbed it and quickly walked to the circulation desk to renew my library card and check out the book. Gabby, Tiffany, and Sarah waved and stopped for a chat, and I was on my way out the front door to find a spot in the sun to read. On my way into the middle of the downtown square and its plethora of benches, I decided a little afternoon pick-me-up might be in order. I tucked the hardback scandal into my bag and took off past the boutiques and eateries on a mission to the perfect place.

Just at the bottom of the hill, right next to the main road and close to the greenway, Nutrition Nook had their neon open sign blaring while Mykah and the team hustled around inside fulfilling orders for healthy protein shakes and loaded teas. There’s not much that will keep me from a Cinnamon Toast Crunch shake, but on this particular afternoon, it was a Mega tea on my mind. When in doubt, order the Southern Belle, and I promise you won’t regret the choice. Jam packed with

strawberry lemon collagen, peach tea, B6, B12, and mango aloe, this giant slurp of goodness was the perfect amount of happy to balance out the crime novel waiting in my purse. Before I left to stick my nose in a book, Mykah mixed up a few to-go containers so that I could make Beauty and the Beast, Protein Iced Coffee, and The Kitchen Sink at home. I had her mix in a little extra energy and some probiotics, and I was out the door to the nearest empty bench.

A little me time is certainly hard to come by in this day and age, but if you schedule it just right, you can find all the personal fun your heart desires within the Gallatin city limits. Next time you need to slow down and enjoy the things you love, I hope you’ll follow my footsteps and treat yo-self with good food, much needed pampering, and maybe a little hometown history with a twist. §

The Magic Dog Bus was merely a dream in 2018, but in 2023, it became a reality for Amy Williams, owner and operator of this puppy transport business. Self proclaimed the “can-I-pet-that-dog” girl, Amy has worked with pups in clinics, daycares, and kennels and thought it would be a fun idea to create a business that could provide transportation for dogs just like the school bus picks up students each day. Each staff member is CPR/First Aid/AED certified and works tirelessly to ensure your pup has a fun and safe trip. All rides are by appointment and can be booked through their exclusive app that lists days, times, and included facilities around town. Pet parents can schedule grooming, boarding, or daycare appointments and book to have The Magic Dog Bus get furbabies there and back without hassle. Pups can even paw-ticipate in occasional field trips, and just like people in the car, they get to jam out to songs like “Puppy Dog (Bouncin’ in the Box) by RxckStxr.

Hounds Town USA was founded in 2000 by a former NYPD canine handler and offers an affordable approach to pet care. Adamant about transparent pricing, Hounds Town doesn’t believe in hidden fees and charges for add-on services. You can schedule boarding or spa days for your cats and dogs, and you can rest assured the team will treat your pup or kitty like one of their own. They’re confident your fur-iends will enjoy their stay and may even come home with the “Hounds Town Hangover” from playing and socializing with other animals. Know that each franchised Hounds Town location is helping to rehabilitate people through animals. If you’d like to donate to the non-profit side of this business, visit their Hounds Town Charities website to find all the ways you can give back, benefitting four-legged and two-legged creatures alike.

TIME TO HONOR

Veterans are an important population in the United States of America, and here in Gallatin and Sumner County, they are treasured residents. Chartered in 1919 and still welcoming veterans of all military branches today, The American Legion Post 17 is proud to exist just off South Water Avenue near the heart of downtown. They pride themselves on serving God, country, and community and sponsor a number of events and organizations around Sumner County.

Our American Legion is named after the first county resident who died in WWI, John T. Alexander. He served as a private in the U.S. Army, and his legacy lives on in the good work the legion engages in each and every day. Dedicated to veterans and their families, the legion has a mission to uphold and defend the Constitution while promoting patriotism, charitable support, community

service, and all activities associated with educating and helping others. Many organizations and activities run by the legion are designed to teach leadership and responsibility, especially to young boys.

American Legion Post 17 baseball is extremely notable in Gallatin, TN.

The American Legion has hosted youth baseball programs since 1925 with an overall goal of helping players learn to work together, hold their tempers, pull their weight, and realize their importance in group settings. Less about the sport and more about good sportsmanship, American Legion baseball is widely known for helping players develop healthy social skills and physical habits while also allowing them to have fun doing something they love.

A program focusing on leadership, Boys State is the most respected and selective educational program

of government instruction available for high school students. Becoming a part of local, county, and state government operations, young men are exposed to rights, privileges, duties and responsibilities of franchised citizens. High school juniors are selected by the legion, and in most cases, expenses associated with attending are handled by a sponsoring American Legion post, local business, or other community organization.

Each year, the American Legion Post 17 hosts the Veterans Day Parade, marching pride and a grateful spirit through downtown Gallatin in honor of our veterans. Gathering on a Saturday close to November 11th, the entire city comes together to honor the men and women brave enough to preserve our freedoms and our safety. Similarly, once a month, the legion hosts a Saturday morning breakfast and a Tuesday evening dinner for the

Girl Scouts from Troop 1882 at the Veterans Day Parade

cost of an $8.00 donation. Kids under 11 eat free, and lots of conversation and connecting ensue while breaking bread together.

Important to protecting our veterans and honoring their mental health, the legion is open to all veterans and active duty personnel and supports the confidentiality of everyone seeking help, whether through the veterans crisis or national suicide prevention hotlines. If you’d like to support our veterans and also the programs and activities hosted by American Legion Post 17, donation and sponsorship opportunities are a great way to give back and get involved.

The Sumner County Tennessee Veterans Service Office honors and assists veterans and their families, helping them to apply for benefits with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). They understand that the VA can be a confusing place, and their office exists to help people navigate the necessary paperwork to get the process moving toward the benefits people deserve. You can visit online to find out more information and can

even call to schedule an in-home visit to discuss your VA needs. Offices are county funded and offer services free of cost; they also offer outreach the first week of every month in Hendersonville, Westmoreland, and Portland.

The Gallatin VA Clinic provides outpatient primary care, tele-mental health, health coaching, lab and social work services for veterans here in Sumner County. They also have transportation services, getting individuals and groups to various appointments, pharmacies, and facilities. Services must be scheduled by appointment and have average wait times of 26 days for new patients and two days for existing patients. Even families of veterans can receive social work services, guiding them to the proper resources to help care for their loved one medically or legally. Help with home health and community living situations can be handled as well, making the VA a great place to provide veterans and their families the tools they need to prevent and treat illnesses as they surface.

Veterans looking for jobs can venture to The American Job Center off Green Lea Blvd. on the South side of Gallatin and visit the local veteran employment representative for help finding employment in the area. The American Job Center can help with resumes, online applications, interview preparation, and even professional clothing. They hold monthly job fairs where many local employers take resumes and interview on the spot to fill immediate roles, and the veteran employment representative can be found attending public events around town to learn more about what businesses want and need in employees so that veterans looking for roles have the best information to get them the job. The AJC also has a mobile job center among other services, making it a great place for veterans and other citizens to gather resources to improve their professional endeavors.

Chapter 240 Vietnam Veterans of America of Sumner County, Tennessee is a non-profit, veteran service organization located in the heart of Hendersonville and serving a

wide surrounding community. VVA was founded in 1978 and is the only national Vietnam veterans organization congressionally chartered and dedicated to Vietnam veterans and their families. Relying on private contributions for revenue, the VVA does not receive local, state or federal monies. They hold a monthly dinner and meeting at the VFW Post 9851 of Shackle Island Road, and membership is open to veterans, family and friends of veterans and the general public.

VFW Post 9851 serves honorably discharged veterans and their families, providing services and support beyond active duty. The Veterans of Foreign Wars organization is dedicated to the wellbeing of veterans, ensuring they can reintegrate into civilian life with the resources they need to be successful. Understanding the many sacrifices made by military personnel, the VFW has a top priority to advocate on behalf of all veterans to ensure their care and respect in our society.

Every Saturday, post 9851 has a food pantry from 9am-11am, open to those who can verify veteran or dependent status. They provide resources for the general public to donate time, goods, and dollars through their

Spearhead Relief Fund, and they have a survivors toolkit for those needing more information on how to apply for benefits after the loss of a loved one. Giving back to the community is paramount, and several scholarship and recognition programs for students and teachers exist to celebrate achievements of great citizens and to challenge young people to learn more about patriotism and to express their views appropriately.

The Patriot Pen Essay is a nationwide youth essay competition giving students the opportunity to express their views on a patriotic theme. More than 120,000 students participated in 2023 with first place winning $5,000 and an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C. with a parent or guardian. Another essay contest with higher stakes is the Voice of Democracy Audio-Essay contest. Nearly 40,000 high school students participate each year and scholarships range from $1,000$16,000. Winners from each state are awarded a minimum of $1,000 and a trip to Washington, D.C. As a nod to the great educators teaching our students, the VFW recognizes three each year, one

from elementary, middle, and high school for outstanding commitment to teaching Americanism and patriotism in the classroom.

On their website, the VFW has a plethora of resources, from crisis hotlines to events, media, and financial assistance websites and initiatives. Post 9851 hosts a Veterans Day parade each year in Hendersonville and has a weekly Scuttlebutt Coffee & Chat event designed to be an all-veteran social to start Saturday morning right.

Here at the chamber, we know and respect a number of veterans serving our community as business owners, government officials, or just good people donating their time and efforts to the community. We do our best to have ready resources available to anyone calling for assistance or information, and we support all efforts to honor and respect our large veteran population here in Sumner County. The red poppy has long been a symbol of veteran remembrance, symbolizing those who have fallen as a sacrifice for our country and people. We hope you’ll consider donating to the “Buddy” Poppy program, reading John McCrae’s “In Flanders Fields,” and shaking the hand of the next veteran you meet. §
